US, NATO firefighters forge through flames Story and photos by Senior Airman Devin M. Rumbaugh 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs U.S. Air Forces in Europe Fire Academy members assigned to the 435th Construction and Training Squadron hosted a burn training during a USAFE North Atlantic Treaty Organization Firefighter Partnership course on Ramstein Air Base, Oct. 5. “The participants did extremely well,” said U.S. Air Force 1st Lt. Justin Domingo, 435th Contingency Response Support Squadron air advisor. “Most participants are already experienced firefighters, so they generally have no issues.” This training enhances interoperability with Latvian and Lithuanian air forces firefighters and ensures all forces are qualified, trained, and knowledgeable rescue personnel. “This is the third firefighting training course this year that we’ve hosted,” See FIREFIGHTERS, Page 2

Story and photos by Senior Airman Joshua Magbanua Airman 1st Class Ariel Leighty 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Airmen from the 424th Air Base Squadron at Chièvres Air Base, Belgium, welcomed some visitors who ‘dropped in’ from Ramstein Air Base, in a way not seen in over a half century, Oct. 4. “It’s the first time in 51 years that we are conducting airdrop exercises at Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe Airfield,” said U.S. Air Force Maj. Tim O’Rourke, 424th ABS

Director of Operations. “In addition to the airdrop, crews will be using the newly certified assault landing zone to conduct engine running on-loads and offloads.” Parajumpers from Ramstein’s 435th Air Ground Operations Wing participated in the jump, conducted from C-130J Super Hercules aircraft assigned to the 37th Airlift Squadron. FIREFIGHTERS from Page 1 Domingo said. “We look forward to continuing these events in order to maintain the relationships we’ve built while developing our goal of NATO interoperability.” More than 20 NATO ally firefighters participated in the five-day course focused on crash and fire procedure familiarization, enabling partner nations to work together in any situation. “The NATO allies are always ready for a challenge and bring a lot of motivation and energy to every situation whether it’s just a classroom discussion or hands-on training,” said U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Germane White, 435th CTS fire rescue and contingency training instructor. Students learned firefighting tactics such as nozzle operations, hose advancement, forcible entry, search and rescue operations, and confined space rescue. “I feel honored to be an instructor for our NATO allies,” White said. “They bring so much to the table, and it’s monumental being able to instruct and help them with certain tactics they may not be familiar with.” U.S. aircraft are present throughout Europe and at any given time an emergency can arise. By conducting this training, the instructors are prepping NATO allies for contingency operations and humanitarian missions.

DROP IN from Page 1 Supreme Allied Commander Europe and the NATO. The newly implemented drop zone provides NATO nations a training arena to practice and hone skills vital for combat readiness. “The objective of the exercise was to demonstrate the new capability of the airfield,” said O’Rourke. “In doing so, we were able to contribute to the readiness and training for tactical airlift crews and airborne units. All of our Airmen were essential to today’s mission. Without their contributions, and the support from the local community, SHAPE, U.S. Army Garrison Benelux, the 86th Operations Group, and the 435th Contingency Response Group, none of this would have been possible.” Leaders at the 424th ABS have been identifying ways to expand their airfield’s ability to support various Army and Air Force missions and training opportunities. When it became known that SHAPE airfield had infrastructure to support landing and drop zone operations, research was conducted to determine whether or not it was viable to establish such operations at Chièvres. A series of site surveys and risk assessments showed the capability was possible, and the landing and drop zones were soon certified for use. The recent airdrop of 435th AGOW Airmen served as a proof of concept that Chièvres can accommodate tactical airlift training, O’Rourke added. “If we were to use the proverbial ‘crawl, walk, run,’ I would say we are in the walking stage,” O’Rourke said. “We are getting closer and closer to becoming fully operational in terms of our in-house capabilities to support expanded operations.” Lt. Col. Craig Lindstrom, 424th

ABS commander, described the expansion of Chièvres’ capabilities as a collaborative effort that required ingenuity on the part of all of the squadron’s mission partners. At Chièvres, the U.S. Army operates the installation, while local farmers own portions of the property within the perimeter of the base, including on the airfield. Lindstrom said the location of SHAPE airfield is ideal for the use of C-130s from Ramstein because of the relatively short flight time and the available maneuvering airspace to conduct airdrops. The squadron’s intent is to look at the airfield not merely as a transit hub but a training arena for NATO aircrews and airborne forces to get realistic, easy-to-schedule training opportunities in the heart of Western Europe. “We are excited to see this vision become a reality and are hopeful it will make positive contributions to NATO training and readiness,” Lindstrom said.

Amazing Base provides healthy competition by Airman 1st Class Kristof J. Rixmann 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Fifteen teams of four participated in the annual Amazing Base competition, which showcased obstacles strewn across base that encouraged teamwork, problem solving and exercise on Ramstein Air Base, Oct. 10. Throughout the morning and afternoon, teams raced to multiple “road blocks,” which required them to complete a task before receiving a clue to the next station. Notable obstacles found at the road blocks included a bean-bag toss, Frisbeegolf, a scavenger hunt at the base library, trivia at the base Community Bank and PAX Terminal, and an activity known by U.S. Air Force firefighters as the Keiser sled physical exertion test, which is used by service members as a test of physical stamina. Kyle Pedigo, an Amazing Base participant, enjoyed the teamwork and exercise involved in each obstacle. “It was just a lot of fun,” said Pedigo. “There was good competition, but everyone was still helping each other out. It was a good workout; I think my team and I ran about five miles throughout the event. My wife was on my team along with one of our

best friends, and our teamwork made me really proud of us as a team for finishing and working together.” Pedigo later laughed as he said the Amazing Base definitely brought out his competitive side. “We’re a very competitive family anyways, but there were no hard feelings or any type of malice” he said. “It was really just a lot of fun.” Cris August, Amazing Base planning committee member, believed the event to not only be a fun reason to exercise but also served as an opportune time for U.S. Airmen who have just moved here to socialize and network with others. “I think it’s a fantastic opportunity for newcomers to the base, and certainly their family members, to really see all Ramstein has to offer,” said August. “Being overseas is a fabulous opportunity and having the chance to see the resources the base has to offer, both for the professional side and for the family members, I think was our main goal.” The mode of transportation throughout the competition varied based on team preference. Competitors were seen running, biking and driving to each road block. No matter how participants went from

cessful without the various teams working together to adapt to changing requirements, complete processes and meet train schedules. “As SDDC was only responsible for managing port operations the 21st TSC, 39th MCB and their subordinate mission command elements made all onward movement operations smooth by ensuring all theater sustainment was synched with our operations,” Theard added. “Teamwork and communication was key.” Hiatt expressed his appreciation for the French support and enthusiasm as well.

“The Gendarmerie were great and wanted to exchange patches with us,”Hiatt said. “The SNCF (French Commercial Rail Company) actually sent about 10 of their employees and management from Paris to the port for two days to witness this historic operation. Overall, they were very eager and willing to accommodate our requirements to ensure the success of the (ammunition shipment).” The complete ammunition shipment, consisting of more than 570 containers, will be brought through various ports throughout the region.

The Amazing Base is held annually. For more information, individuals interested in the competition can find out more information on the Ramstein website www. Ramstein.af.mil.

21st TSC returns to France for first military port operations in 50 years by Sgt. 1st Class Jacob McDonald 21st Theater Sustainment Command RADICATEL, France – The U.S. Army ended a 50-year hiatus when it used a French port to bring equipment into Europe for the first time since Charles de Gaulle removed France from the NATO Military Committee. The 21st Theater Sustainment Command and Military Surface Deployment and Distribution Command, brought 177 20-foot containers of ammunition through the port at Radicatel, France, Oct. 10-13, for movement to Germany, marking a new beginning half a century in the making. “In the past several decades we’ve relied heavily, and often exclusively, on agreements and access in Germany to conduct a large portion of reception, staging, and onward movement of cargo into the theater,” said Maj. Aaron Hiatt, operations officer, 838th Transportation Battalion, 598th Transportation Brigade, SDDC. “Operations like this serve as a proof of concept for operating at any number of various ports in France if required to conduct a large-scale deployment in to the (European) theater.” The Army recognized the need to exer-

cise more port options to quickly deploy and assemble units in Europe if the need arises. “Providing strategic support to largescale combat operations all begins with sufficient placement and access, that’s exactly what operations like our mission at the port of Radicatel accomplish,” Hiatt said. “In addition to executing a proof of concept, we’ve also fortified our relationships with a critical ally on the continent.” Planning for the operation began several years ago with site surveys to assess the port, and continued with coordination between the two countries to work through the legal and logistical obstacles. The mission required cooperation and support from the French National Police or Gendarmerie, Theater Logistics Support Command-Europe, 39th Movement Control Battalion, Military Sealift Command, French Customs authorities and the French commercial railway, among others. “Once on ground and after meeting the French Teams involved, everyone was motivated and supportive to make this mission a success,” said Sidney Theard, detachment director, Benelux Detachment, 838th Trans. Battalion. He said the effort wouldn’t have been suc-

435th CRG demonstrates strike package support concept by Staff Sgt. Jimmie D. Pike 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs At any moment, in the modern dynamic warfighting environment, anything can happen; and the U.S. Air Force knows flexibility is the key to airpower. This flexibility is forged by Airmen through constant innovation and training. Airmen assigned to the 435th Contingency Response Group conducted a proof-of-concept exercise at Ramstein Air Base, Oct. 4, to showcase this ability. “The 435th Contingency Response Squadron was exercising the ability to generate strike package support utilizing the bare minimum equipment and personnel required,” said Tech. Sgt. Jayson Lyons, 435th CRS Operations, Readiness, and Training Flight chief. “We were also proving the ‘hybrid Airman’ concept that Chief Master Sgt. of the Air Force (Kaleth O.) Wright briefed, to conduct arming and dearming, refueling, and cargo movement in a simulated combat environment.” On the ground, one of the focus points of the exercise was completing a hot refuel of two F-16 Fighting Falcon aircraft.

“A ‘hot refuel’ is when you refuel an aircraft with one or more engines of the aircraft operating,” said Lyons. “It provides the least amount of personnel and equipment needs and can reduce aircraft regeneration time up to 70 percent.” Hot refuels are especially important when there may be an imminent threat in the area, explained Lyons. Along with the 435th CRG, 15 agencies participated in the exercise to demonstrate Airmen’s ability to support strike packages at a moment’s notice in austere locations. Among the 15 agencies were the 86th Airlift Wing providing the airfield and support, the 52 Fighter Wing providing the fighter aircraft, and the 435th Air Ground Operations Wing providing manpower and oversight. “At the 435th CRG we believe that in order to ensure the peace we need to be prepared for war,” said Col. Jason Terry, 435th CRG commander. “This exercise is about demonstrating our ability to jump into a field, secure the field, assess it, bring the aircraft in and do what we do. It’s all part of the bigger overall mission of the 435th Air Ground Operations Wing to deliver bombs, com(munication)s, and airfields on demand.”

hygienists do and helps raise awareness on the importance of good oral health. “This year, the clinic is focusing on four routines that can help people maintain healthy smiles, such as brushing, flossing, rinsing, and chewing,” said Master Sgt. Kara Shores, 86th Dental Squadron Chief of Preventive Dentistry. Dental hygiene refers to the practice of keeping the mouth, teeth, and gums clean to prevent disease. A common mistake people make is using the wrong toothbrush, which can cause gums to shrink away and recede faster than usual, said Shores. “Skipping flossing or only flossing before a dentist appointment puts you at a higher risk of periodontal disease and early tooth loss,” said Shores. Other ways of ensuring good oral health include eating regular nutritious meals, avoiding frequent between-meal snacking, and protecting your teeth with fluoride by using fluoride toothpaste and drinking fluorinated water, said Shores. “Rinsing your teeth can also help

eliminate biofilm and bacteria that brushing and flossing cannot,” said Shores. “The chance of dental decay and infection is reduced by rinsing often and chewing sugarless gum for 20 minutes following meals.” Sometimes people don’t know when to go to the dentist or how often to go. “On-base services provide examinations and cleanings once per year for active-duty military, unless a

patient has other periodontal needs. If service members prefer cleanings twice per year, many commercial dental insurance policies cover two cleanings per year,” said Shores. Dental Hygiene Month is important because it spreads awareness and educates patients about the concerns regarding their oral health, said Shores. Dentists and dental hygienists just want their patients to be happy and healthy.

October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month by Master Sgt. Mary Grace Martin U.S. Air Forces in Europe - Air Forces Africa Kisling NCO Academy National Disability Employment Awareness Month is celebrated each October to educate communities about disability employment issues and embrace the many and varied contributions of America’s workers with disabilities. NDEAM is a reminder a diverse workforce includes

individuals with sensory, physical, and mental conditions. This year’s theme is “America’s Workforce: Empowering All.” Michael Pompeo, U.S. Secretary of State said, “U.S. workers are the engine of our economy. Our country is stronger and more prosperous because employers utilize the immense talents of individuals with disabilities, including disabled veterans.”

Provided below are a few facts of the fight for equality among people with disabilities: a. In 1945, President Harry S. Truman approved a Congressional resolution declaring the first week in October “National Employ the Physically Handicapped Week”. b. The word “physically” was removed in 1962 to include individuals with all types of disabilities.

c. In the 1950s, veterans with disabilities and other people with disabilities began the barrierfree movement. The combined efforts of the U.S. Veterans Administration, the President’s Committee on Employment of the Handicapped and the National Easter Seals Society, among others, result in the development of national standards for “barrier-free” buildings.

d. In 1988, Congress expanded the week to a month and changed the name to “National Disability Employment Awareness Month.” We all play an important part in fostering a more inclusive workforce, one where every person is recognized for his or her abilities — every day of every month. Staying safe online in workplace by 86th Communications Squadron Wing Cybersecurity Office When you are on the job – whether it’s at a corporate office, local restaurant, healthcare provider, academic institution, or government agency ‒ your organization’s online safety and security are a responsibility we all share, and as the lines between our work and daily lives become increasingly blurred, it is more important than ever to be certain that smart cybersecurity carries over between the two. Social Media is a great tool to stay in contact with family and friends. However, you must practice not only good privacy for your own good but also from an opera-

tional security perspective. In January , the San Francisco-based company Strava updated its global heat map of user activity as recorded by various wearable devices, leading to the disclosure of previously non-public information. While you’re on-the-job, here are some additional tips for protecting yourself and your organization: 1. Protect your Common Access Card (CAC) – Not only is this your ID Card for accessing base resources, this is required for you to access the Air Force Network. 2. Do not connect removable devices to your work computer – This is a violation of Air Force policy and will result in your loss of access to the net-

work while the circumstances are investigated. 3. Report any cybersecurity incident – Report all computer or network issues to your unit cybersecurity liaison. 4. Avoid oversharing online While it may be very exciting to share what you do at work with others, remember your organization’s security standards and be careful what you say, especially in public settings. You never know who may be overhearing your conversations. Also, put away your work identification or badge when out in public and when using public transportation. 5. When in doubt, contact your unit CSL or the 86th Communications Squadron Wing Cybersecurity Office at 480-3438 or 06371-47-3438.

Largest Army Bazaar in Europe opens Nov. 2 By Katharina Wons U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz Public Affairs Office volunteer The upcoming U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation Holiday Bazaar will be the largest Army Bazaar in Europe with 125 vendors and sponsors from all over the world, Nov. 2 – 4. European bazaars were first introduced to the community as fundraisers in the 1960s. At that time, there were three different bazaars managed by military spouses – Kaiserslautern, Landstuhl and Ramstein. However, in 1997, there were no leading Army spouse groups who could devote their time to run the bazaars, and as a result, Army bazaars ceased to exist. In 1999, Gudrun Schuler-Heilman, former Family and MWR chief of financial management, decided to take on the challenge of reestablishing garrison bazaars. The first Family and MWR bazaar took place at the Kaiserslautern Community Activity Center on Daenner Kaserne in 1999. In 2001, the bazaar was moved to the Rhine Ordnance Barracks Special Events Center. Since then, the event has grown every year and has become one of the most popular events for the military community. Today, there are a total of five bazaars throughout the year organized by Family and MWR – Holiday Bazaar (ROB), Last Minute Mini Bazaar (Heaton Auditorium, Landstuhl Regional Medical Center), Spring Bazaar (ROB), Mother’s Day Bazaar (Heaton Auditorium) and Summer Bazaar (ROB). This will be the largest bazaar since its reestablishment in 1997 and takes place Nov. 2 and 3 from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Nov. 4 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. in Bldgs. 237 and 229, on Rhine Ordnance Barracks. “From the beginning, the main goal behind offering these major events was and still is to continue to ensure that monetary support is available to reinvest Soldier dollars back into the community,” Janna Henderson, chief of NonAppropriated Funds Support (Family and MWR) explained. “This, in turn, provides resources for employment, childcare, recreation, entertainment and facility improvements by creating a home away from home atmosphere for our Soldiers and their families.” In fiscal 2018, USAG RP Family and MWR generated over $385,000 in sales. Proceeds benefitted many youth and community programs. Among other things, Family and MWR was able to finance the renovation of Baumholder’s Rheinlander Convention Center ball-

The event takes place Nov. 2 and 3 from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Nov. 4 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. in Bldgs. 237 and 229, on Rhine Ordnance Barracks. Photo by Mary A. Davis

room to include new furnishings for community events, as well as purchasing family-oriented outdoor recreation equipment, such as mountain bikes, pop-up canopies, skis, boots and fest tables. Furthermore, automotive skills centers were able to purchase additional equipment for self-service sections and add a new annex to provide more customer-mentoring capabilities. Java Cafés received new blenders and espresso machines to meet increased customer demand, and on Pulaski Barracks, Kazabra Club replaced its ballroom furnishings and installed a new wood floor to support community-wide events. This year, Family and MWR will open a second warehouse to bring an additional 30 new vendors, Henderson said. Vendors from around the globe will bring a variety of merchandise to include pottery, ceramics, jewelry, country-specific delicacies, alcoholic beverages, furniture, Christmas decorations and much more. Along with an exclusive selection of European merchandise, the bazaar also offers a broad variety of meal options, including food from all over the world. Holiday Bazaar vendors will also contribute to the excitement of the event by dressing up in traditional clothing representing their countries. “We purchased over 100 flags to hang over each stand, so our customers can easily identify the origin of the items offered for purchase,” Henderson added. Also, there will be various attractions at the bazaar to make it a special experience for the whole family and add to the

holiday spirit. The event offers a Santa’s Booth, allowing visitors to dress up and take pictures with Santa or the Grinch free of charge. In addition, there will be giveaways offering t-shirts, chocolates and a variety of items from sponsors to include round-trip airfare to the U.S. and overnight accommodations for two at Edelweiss Lodge and Resort in Garmisch-Partenkirchen. Besides that, Family and MWR is working with the Directorate of Human Resources to set up a box packing booth next to the self-service gift wrapping station, so customers can pack items in flat-rate shipping boxes to mail at their own convenience. In addition, Henderson explained that almost all of the furniture vendors deliver their bigger items right after the bazaar. In cases where no delivery option is available, customers can request delivery at the main cashier stand. In order to make this three-day multinational extravaganza happen, Family and MWR is in need of volunteers. “Since the organization does not have designated positions to run the bazaar, all employees that work in support of the event are doing so in addition to their normal duties,” Henderson explained. “If you want to become a volunteer, contact Heather Miles, Army Community Service, at heather.m.miles4.civ@mail. mil and request a volunteer form,” she added. Volunteers will receive a t-shirt, a $15 Family and MWR gift card for each day of service or a $50 gift card for three consecutive days of service. Besides the great reward program

Family and MWR offers, volunteering for an event like this provides the opportunity to meet new friends, be part of the community and get to know the Family and MWR organization for future career opportunities. Another way to participate is to become a sponsor. For further information on the process, interested individuals or companies can contact Jackie Colindres, Family and MWR Sponsorship and Advertising Sales manager at jacqueline.colindres.naf@mail.mil. In addition to volunteer assistance, Family and MWR is always looking for new vendors to enhance the range of products offered at the bazaars. In order to become a vendor, interested sellers can send a request to usarmy.rheinland-pfalz. id-europe.mbx.dfmwr-bazaar@mail.mil. Family and MWR will ask for a valid business license, business liability, a price listing in U.S. dollars and their Data Universal Numbering System designator. After reviewing the information, a five-year contract will be issued that can be used for all Army bazaars in Europe. The upcoming Family and MWR Holiday Bazaar is a great event for everyone looking for unique presents for their loved ones or wanting to experience different cultures within an extraordinary setting. In line with the holiday spirit, it provides the opportunity to give back to the community. No matter if you are participating as a volunteer or just enjoying the day with your family, USAG RP Family and MWR is looking forward to seeing you at the Holiday Bazaar!

Germans observe religious holiday, Thursday 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Editor’s Note: This article was published in a previous edition of the Kaiserslautern American and the information has been updated to reflect this year’s event. Nov. 1 is known as “Allerheiligen,” or “All Saints Day.” German Catholics visit

cemeteries to light candles and to decorate the gravesites of deceased family members and friends with flowers or wreaths made of fir tree branches, pine cones and dried flowers. Nov. 1 is observed as a legal holiday in the German states with mainly Catholic population such as Rheinland-Pfalz, Saarland, Baden-Wuerrtemberg and

Kaiserslautern Evangelical

Lutheran Church

Nordrhein-Westfalen. In the other states the religious holiday is a regular workday. The origin of All Saints Day dates back to May 13, 610, when Pope Boniface IV dedicated a special day to all saints who never received their own memorial day. Old calendars show that almost every day is dedicated to a saint. In the Pantheon in Rome, Pope Boniface honored all saints who lived with Christian ideals

in all countries of the world. In 1835, Pope Gregor IV moved All Saints Day to Nov. 1. November is known as the month of remembrance, contemplation and mourning. Protestants remember the dead on “Totensonntag,” Nov. 25. It always falls on the last Sunday before the first Advent Sunday. In 1816, this memorial day was introduced for the first time in Prussia, from where it spread

throughout the years to all Protestant regions. The National Day of Mourning will be observed Nov. 18. It is dedicated to the memory of the dead of World War I and II and the victims of Nazi terror. Wreathlaying ceremonies will take place in Ramstein-Miesenbach and Kaiserslautern. Another religious, but not legal, holiday is the Day of Prayer and Repentance Nov. 21.

Ramstein tops Kaiserslautern to set up replay by Thomas Warner contributing writer Ramstein beat Kaiserslautern 33-14 to close out an undefeated 2018 regular season but the two schools will play again this weekend in the DODEA football playoff semifinals. Kaiserslautern will make its first postseason appearance since 2014 while Ramstein is looking to win again for a ticket back to the title game where it’s season ended last year. Saturday’s game at KHS stadium on Vogelweh featured a heavy dose of Royals runners Dominque Arizpe, J.J. Little, and Bailey Holland, who combined for 357 ground yards and four touchdowns. Ramstein established a 17-0 halftime lead and saw much of its success throughout the game come from third down conversions to extend drives. The same held true in the season opener, when Ramstein also beat Kaiserslautern. “That’s been big for us all season and to do it you have to be focused and maintain your composure, so it’s good to see your players do that,” said third-year Royals coach Carter Hollenbeck. Kaiserslautern tried to ignite its own vaunted running game but had less success against what statistically ranks as the top defensive unit in DODEA Division I. The Royals turned the ball over near their own goal line twice to KHS in the first half but both times the Ramstein defense stiffened and held on fourth down. “We don’t have a lot of players and the depth we do have is a lot of ninth graders, mostly,” said firstyear Kaiserslautern coach Duke Allen. “I am proud of the way our team responded to a big-game situation against Ramstein and know we are continuing to improve. Our team is playing hard and you can see it.” Arizpe had 233 yards on 17 carries and a touchdown for Ramstein while Holland ran 13 times for 63 yards, with two scores. Little scored once with 11 carries for 61 yards. Arizpe had three runs of over 20 yards including a 49-yard scamper early in the game that set up a short Holland score. “Dom had a great game and I was happy overall with our running attack,” said Hollenbeck. “Another key part of the game was Austin Grimes and his kicking. He made both of his field goal tries and both extra-point kicks, but his kickoffs really got better and better as the game went on. Special teams is something you have

to be able to be able to depend on.” Corey Coombs ran 22 times for 82 yards and a touchdown, on a left-side sweep late in the second half. Raider quarterback Esteban Saldana threw to Nick Henry for a fourth quarter touchdown then threw to Dorian Cotton on the conversion to set the final score. There were numerous positive takeaways for a KHS program that has shown more improvement this season than in the previous five combined. Most notably, Coombs was the season rushing leader for Division I with 186 carries for 1,204 yards. Coombs scored eight touchdowns on the year and will need more high production this week for the Raiders to keep pace with Ramstein. His running mate, Cedric Ellis, will also look to get loose offensively while also continuing to make stops in the defensive secondary. Xavier Chambers had a fumble recovery and an interception for Kaiserslautern and Kaylon Williams had nine stops in the secondary. Andrew Wells added 11 tackles and defensive end Gabe West had three sacks and seven total tackles. Now comes the playoff matchup between the KMC rivals, this time on the RHS campus Saturday. Another chance at the Royals is something most Raider players highly anticipate, even if both coaches said

they would rather be playing someone else. “We look forward to playing them again ... we need to stop the outside run game better so we’ll work on that this week,” said Williams, one of several freshmen seeing time for KHS, including Davyn Hill and others, this year. Chambers agreed, while also pointing out how tough of an assignment it will be. “They are an excellent team and to have made it as far as they did last year you know they have a strong program. But we came out and did some good things so we feel good about how we played, too.” Ramstein’s answer to third-andlong was throws by quarterback Carl Norman to Jason Jones Jr. and Naser

Eaves. The tall duo accounted for seven catches and nearly 100 yards with a screen pass touchdown catch for Jones. “I thought Carl played excellent in his first start and when teams double on those receivers we’ve been able to throw to Drew Hodges in the slot,” Hollenbeck said. “We had Bryce Thomas in the slot, too, before he was injured and it’s an option we’ve had success with.” Miquel Smith and Cameron Chester each made key end zone deflections to keep Kaiserslautern off the scoreboard early and the Raiders were unable to make key plays in between the 20-yard lines that could extend their possessions. Chester had

four tackles and an interception to go with other Ramstein top tacklers Kyle Lloyd with 10, David Faust with nine, Holland with eight, and Jalon Lewis with nine. “Chester is underestimated at five-foot-eight and he draws bigger assignments where he really holds his own,” Hollenbeck said. “He is fast and feisty … we’d been trying to get him a pickoff and he finally got it.” R amstein hosts Kaiserslautern in one of Saturday’s DODEA semifinals while Lakenheath hosts defending champ Stuttgart in the other pairing. The

Division III, II, and I title games take place successively the following week here at the stadium on Vogelweh.

VOLLEYBALL Ramstein tops SHAPE, Kaiserslautern Sophomore Sydney Gabriel had five aces and her senior sister Morgan had three more, plus nine digs to lead Ramstein to a threegame sweep of SHAPE last weekend. Senior striker Masaya Archbold had seven kills as Ramstein (8-0) also swept three straight from Kaiserslautern, winning by

scores of 25-13, 25-15, and 25-8. Lydia Coddington had eight digs in the win over the Raiders and Isabella Coddington had 10 aces plus 15 assists. Freshman Ahmarie Young played big, too, with six kills and seven aces. Ramstein and Black Forest will be hosted by Kaiserslautern for a roundrobin event this weekend to end the regular season, then Europeans begin November 1 in Wiesbaden. Baumholder falls twice The Lady Buccaneers were looking for their first win but couldn’t find it in losses to Spangdahlem and Brussels.

Against Spangdahlem, they fell 25-10, 25-12, and 25-15. The match with Brussels saw BHS make it’s biggest push in the second game before losing by a 25-20 score. Baumholder will host Spangdahlem again this weekend.

TENNIS Ramstein bests Lakenheath, Alconbury Ramstein had a positive end to its regular season, sweeping 34 of 36 matches in wins over Lakenheath and Alconbury. The Ramstein girls had Kate Sankey in the top spot, winning 6-0, 6-0 against her Alconbury foe and 6-0, 2-6, 10-1 against competition from Lakenheath. Ashlyn O’Connor, Alexis Pinkham, Isabella Guzaldo, Maddi Svan, and Mercedez Shelton all recorded 8-0 pro set wins against Lakenheath foes. In girls’ doubles vs. Alconbury, wins came from Pinkham/Shelton, O’Connor/ Guzaldo, and Sankey/Svan. The same pairings were successful against Lakenheath

in this tune-up for Euros, which happen this week at Wiesbaden. Ramstein’s boys got singles wins against Alconbury from No. 1 Jordan Liebig, Connor Markus, Collin Kent, Connor Sankey, and Danny O’Brien. All of those players won as well versus Lakenheath, along with Collin Ritter. Markus and Kent teamed to win in doubles play along with two wins on the day from the tandems of Sankey/Ritter and Liebig/Pinkham. Kaiserslautern topped by Wiesbaden Wiesbaden’s boys won a match with a 6-3 score over Kaiserslautern and the Warriors also won 5-4 against Kaiserslautern’s girls, handing the KHS girls their first loss of the season. The Europeans championships are taking place this week after beginning in Wiesbaden on Wednesday.

CROSS COUNTRY Ramstein boys, girls best at Wiesbaden Ramstein dominated the boys’ competition at a meet in Wiesbaden last weekend. The Royals’ low point total of 15 was far ahead of second place Brussels with 75. SHAPE, Baumholder, Spangdahlem, and AFNORTH also competed at the meet. The Ramstein girls came away with top prize, too, after edging SHAPE 24-31. The cross country European championships will be staged Saturday on the Rolling Hills course at Baumholder.

Winterize your house By Find-It-Guide.com

Get your fireplace wood delivered You may start seeing signs on the side of the road reading “Brennholz.” This is

the German word for firewood. Prices will vary, but there is a limited supply of dry wood (that has been sitting for a year or two) in some areas, which may make it a bit harder to get wood when it is cold. Fresh wood is more difficult to burn in open fireplaces, so act early to get dry wood. Ask if they will deliver to your house or if that is extra. Run your ceiling fans in reverse Once the temps dip down enough where your heat kicks on, you will want to switch your ceiling fans so they rotate in the clockRead more on last page of Property Section Photo by Svetlana Lukienko / Shutterstock.com

Although there can be more warm days ahead of us, the cool nights are a good reminder winter is just around the corner. You likely do not own the house you live in while stationed abroad, but that doesn’t mean you get out of all those “honey to-do” list items you would like to forget. If you are new to your new home, there are some things to think about before the days get short and cold that will help you get ready for the eventual European winter. We have accumulated a list to help you get ready!

Fill your oil now Don’t wait to fill your tanks in the winter when prices are at their highest. If you have a house with big oil tanks for your heating and hot water (as many older houses will have), you will need to schedule an oil delivery. Appointments may take some time to schedule depending on how busy the oil company is, so make the call now to avoid the mad rush. “Heizöl” or “Heizoel” means “heating oil” in English. Also make sure to tell them you would like to use a VAT form!

In German, tree cutting service is “Baumpfleger” or for small jobs, garden service is “Gartenpfleger.” Check your chimney Generally, the “Schornsteinfeger” or chimney sweep comes around for regular visits every year to each area. He or she usually checks your chimney, even when you don’t call for an appointment. If you are unsure if your chimney has been

checked or swept, you may want to call your local “Schornsteinfeger” to see if he can give your place a look. Mind your mold In northern Europe, mold can grow very easily. You will want to take car of any spots in your house that are already springing up before the winter comes, when it is more difficult to get rid of because windows are not opened as frequently. “Schimmel,” mold in German, can be easily combated with a cleaning spray from the hardware store or “Baumarkt.” Look for “Schimmelspray.” The store employees can help you understand how to use it (and they often speak English!).
