RAB Enlisted Summit: Walking in your why

More than 500 members from the Kaiserslautern Military Community and geographically separated units gather, both in person and virtually, for the Ramstein Enlisted Summit at the Hercules Theater at Ramstein Air Base, Oct. 13. Immediately following last Spring’s summit, we began planning for the Fall. We aimed toward the end goal of changing lives. It was important for us to capture what it was that we wanted to achieve by the end of the one-day event. The planning led us to the theme of “Walking in Your Why.” It is not lost on us how much we owe

to our teammates, because they give so much of themselves every single day.

While we had multiple 7-minute Mic-Drops, giving leaders from around the base seven minutes to make the most impactful and life changing speeches, we had a few keynotes that need to be highlighted.

We were fortunate to have Warrant Officer Sara Catterall, NATO Senior Enlisted Leader, kick off the summit and underline how we and our allied partners merge to make one powerful force. Lt. Col. Michael Maynard,

24th Intelligence Squadron commander, conducted one of the most relatable operations briefs. It was truly magnificent to listen and watch him tie the ‘what’ to the ‘why’ of our reason for serving in U.S Air Forces Europe-Air Forces Africa.

When orchestrating the sequence of events, we were very purposeful. One of the most impactful segments from the summit was from Kristen Christy, who lost her spouse by way of suicide. Her story of personal resilience as a spouse left very few dry eyes in the audito-

rium. But of course, we had to wrap up the day with Anthony Brinkley, who delivered the most powerful speech on maximizing the ‘why,’ leaving us with our hearts opened and ready to take on anything.

We couldn’t bring these incredible speakers here without sharing them with other members of Team Ramstein. Our Military and Family Readiness Center partnered with our Enlisted Summit Team to spread the wealth. Our speakers conducted sessions with our spouses, Community Action Team and our Military and

Family Readiness Staff.

There are many ways to say thank you and we’re always looking for creative ways to do so.

We understand that we have to be intentional about the deliberate investment and development of our teammates and their families.

We would like to send a special thank you to Senior Master Sgt. Codi Bowman, Master Sgt. Adam Ybarra and their team for putting this Fall’s summit together for over 600 attendees in over five countries, including the United States.

Ramstein hosts Retiree Appreciation Day

An audience of retirees and service members listen to a speaker at the Retiree Appreciation Day event at Ramstein Air Base, Oct. 13. The RAD was a way for the Kaiserslautern Military Community to show their appreciation for retirees and what they have done for the U.S. military.

This event was used as an opportunity for retirees in the Kaiserslautern Military Community to voice their thoughts on retiree activities and receive important information from U.S. Air Force Col. Denny Davies, 86th Airlift Wing vice commander and other speakers.

“Retiree Appreciation Day is all about getting retirees out into the community,” said U.S. Air Force ret. Chief Master Sgt. Jim Barrante, stand-in director of the KMC RAO. “A lot of retirees prefer face-to-face interactions with agencies and it is important for us to assist them in every way we can.”

The event provided an opportunity to show retirees that they are

valued members of the community.

“There are a ton of representatives from agencies around the KMC here,” Barrante said. “They are here to help the retirees with everything from pay, Social Security benefits, German taxes and healthcare matters. The 86th Medical Group is giving out Flu shots and covid booster shots as well as Glaucoma, blood pressure and skin cancer checks.

They are here for us, so I urge all retirees to come out and take advantage of the opportunity.”

Leadership teams from the U.S. Army and U.S. Air Force in the KMC came out to answer questions, provide valuable information and properly thank retirees for their service.

“It is an absolute honor to be with you all here,” Davies said. “This is one of the best attended events in the KMC and it is appropriate it is so well attended so we can honor each and every one of you. Thank you especially to our retiree organizations

that keep so many people informed and U.S. Army and U.S. Air Force leadership here informed as well.”

There may be many retirees who don’t know where to turn to with questions, or are less involved and informed than active duty service members and need a way to keep in touch. Events like this are a way to bridge the gap.

“It is so important we stay connected over here,” Barrante said. “In the U.S. it is sometimes easier to get information, but over here we are pretty much it. Events like these do not just provide a service to retirees, but show them there are people here who will listen to their concerns and lend a helping hand. It is so important we stay involved with our retirees so they can live the life they deserve.”

US Army’s newest air defense brigade headquarters activates in Germany

The 52nd Air Defense Artillery Brigade headquarters activated today in Sembach.

“I’m very excited to be taking command of the Army’s newest air defense brigade,” said Col. Bruce A. Bredlow, the 52nd ADA’s first commander. “Our mission here in Europe is uniquely rewarding thanks to our ability to work closely with NATO on a regular basis.

We’re looking forward to building new connective tissue at the tactical level with our Allies and partners and expanding our combined capacity through interoperability.”

The headquarters will provide command and control for all

U.S. Army air and missile defense forces within the U.S. European Command area of responsibility, and will report directly to the 10th Army Air and Missile Defense Command.

The 52nd ADA will assume responsibility for the 5th Battalion, 4th Air Defense Artillery Regiment and the future 1st Battalion, 57th Air Defense Artillery Regiment, which will be based in Ansbach, Germany; the 5th Battalion, 7th Air Defense Artillery Regiment based in Baumholder, the 11th Missile Defense Battery based in Turkey; and the 13th Missile Defense Battery based in Israel.

The expansion of U.S. Army air defense capacity in Europe has been long in planning. Since the 10th AAMDC was upgraded to a

one-star command in 2019, the role of brigade headquarters over the air defense battalions has been filled on a rotational basis, by Army National Guard air defense brigades from three states.

Adding the active-duty brigade headquarters along with the new 1-57 short-range air defense regiment to theater adds significant capacity to the U.S. contribution to the Alliance’s ground-based air defense in EUCOM. U.S. President Joe Biden announced this new air defense artillery brigade at the NATO summit in Madrid, Spain, in June.

During the morning portion of the visit, U.S. Air Force Lt. Col. Kevin D. Coughlin, 424th Air Base Squadron commander, expressed his gratitude for the local farming community and his desire to continue to build on their partnership.

U.S. Air Force Airmen from the 424th Air Base Squadron fire station give a demonstration to local farmers at Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe Airfield-Chièvres Air Base, Belgium, Oct. 11. The farmers were given an opportunity to use the department’s specialty tools, ride in fire trucks and participate in a fire extinguishing simulation as part of the 424th ABS appreciation for their support.

This was a special event that was put together by the 424 ABS in honor of their 10-year anniversary — to boost morale the squadron allowed their Airmen to wear mix-matched uniforms and 10-year anniversary morale patches at the event.

This training was part of the 10-year anniversary celebration. Airmen were permitted to wear mixmatched uniforms and morale patches as part of the celebration.

21st TSC Chaplains keep coffee, conversation flowing with Holy Joe’s

by Eleanor Prohaska 21st Theater Sustainment Command The 21st Theater Sustainment Command Chaplain, Col. Stanton Trotter, knows how to get Soldiers’ attention. He tries to always have candy at his desk, donuts at special events, and hot coffee wherever chaplains are near.

“Many times a Soldier will come for a cup a coffee to a coffee ministry sponsored by a chaplain and pour a fresh cup of coffee, linger over the joy of the libation, and then turn to the chaplain and say, ‘Chaplain, as long as I am here, I would like talk with you about something. Do you have a minute?’” said Trotter.

The 21st TSC chaplains got a boost to their coffee supply last month, from the nonprofit organization Holy Joe’s, which donated 16 pallets of coffee for distribution throughout Germany and forward operating sites in Poland.

Trotter and Holy Joe’s have a decade-long track record, going

back to when Trotter was deployed to Afghanistan in 2012, and Holy Joe’s supplied coffee for the Spiritual Resiliency Center at Bagram Air Base.

Thousands of free cups of Holy Joe’s coffee are served to U.S. troops in 70 countries throughout the world each day. Holy Joe’s founder and executive director Thomas Jastermsky estimates they have supplied more than two billion cups of coffee to Soldiers, Airmen, Sailors, Marines, Special Forces and the Coast Guard since their modest beginnings in 2006.

“We are happy to be of service through the chaplains,” said Jastermsky. “It’s more than just a cup of coffee. People can connect with the chaplains if they are going through something heavy, and know that it will be confidential. It also lets Service Members know that people back home are thinking of them.”

Prevent spread of influenza, COVID-19 viruses within your community

by Michelle Thum Health.mil As families return from summer vacation and students return to school, the influenza (flu) season is approaching while the COVID19 pandemic is still on-going.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, every year in the United States, millions of children get sick with flu like illnesses and thousands of them are hospitalized due to complications from influenza viruses. Also, the risk of complications from the flu virus increases for those 65 years and older.

According to the World Health Organi­ zation, there are about 3 to 5 million cases of severe illness annually due to influenza viruses and about 290,000 to 650,000 deaths.

While influenza and COVID-19 are both typically considered winter viruses, they can occur at any time.

“In other words, there is an increased risk of infection rate during the winter season compared to any other period in the year,” said U.S. Army Public Health nurse regional consultant Lt. Col. Simeon Smith. “During this winter season, we have to be vigilant to protect our families, friends, communities and ourselves from the spread of both influenza viruses and COVID-19.”

According to health experts, influenza viruses and COVID-19 are both contagious respiratory illnesses and can affect the upper airway and sometimes the lungs.

Before flu season is fully underway and COVID cases rise again, boost your immunity with flu and COVID-19 bivalent boosters. Health officials say vaccination is the best means to protect yourself, families, friends, and communities from the spread of both influenza viruses and COVID-19. Military Health System beneficiaries can get both vaccines at no cost at military, local community health clinics, and participating TRICARE network pharmacies.

“Without being protected by the influenza and COVID vaccines, no one is immune from these viruses,” added Smith.

Health officials warn that being infected with one, or both, of these viruses can cause mild to severe illnesses and could lead to death.

According to Smith, both of these viruses have similar symptoms, and it can be difficult to tell the difference just by looking at or experiencing the symptoms. Smith recommends to consult with a healthcare provider and get tested when you feel sick or display symptoms.

“As we enter into the winter season, it is increasingly important to take the necessary precautions to protect ourselves against

influenza viruses and COVID-19,” said Smith.

The Food and Drug Administration recently approved COVID-19 vaccine for those who are six months old and above. Studies show that since the development and implementation of the COVID-19 vaccine, there has been a sharp decline in the death rate and hospitalization in the United States and Europe.

According to Smith, the influenza vaccine is an approved seasonal vaccine that is administered every year. TRICARE beneficiaries can contact their military hospital or clinic in order to receive the vaccines.

“There are things we all can do in protecting our family, friends, our communities

and ourselves,” said Smith.

Smith offered the following recommended preventive measures to protect families, friends and ourselves: • Get vaccinated. Vaccines save lives.

• Stay home when you are not feeling well; do not send your child to school or daycare when he or she is feeling sick, consult with your healthcare provider.

• Wash your hands regularly with soap and water; if water is not available, use alcohol based hand sanitizer.

• Clean and disinfect surfaces and objects that may be contaminated with these viruses.

• Cover your nose and mouth with tissue or the inside of your elbow when you cough or sneeze.

• Limit your contact with others when you are sick and avoid close contact with people who are sick.

• When possible, have more outdoor activities instead of indoor activities.

“We all have a role to play in protecting ourselves and love ones and limiting the spread of viruses within our schools, work environments and communities,” added Smith.

CDC’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices recommends that individuals should get vaccinated because it is the best protection against the influenza and COVID-19 viruses.

Individuals are encouraged to contact their local military hospital or clinic and arrange to get their flu and COVID-19 vaccines.

U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz co-hosts annual Kaiserslautern Military Community’s Retiree Appreciation Day

Story & photo by Nicole Alberico U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz About 650 people affiliated with the military retirement community across the garrison footprint attended the annual Retiree Appreciation Day co-hosted by U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz and the 86th Airlift Wing Oct. 13 at Ramstein Air Base Officers’ Club.

The event kicked off with an official ceremony where retirees heard from the big three Kaiserslautern Military Community commanders and representatives from federal benefits agencies. Garrison Commander Col. Reid E. Furman was the first commander to welcome the crowd.

“This day is dedicated to all of you,” said Furman during his remarks. “I salute your service and all that you continue to bring

to forefront our community. I look forward to the day that my family and I will join the ranks of the military retired.”

After the remarks, a question and answer session and a few special recognitions, the ceremony closed with a RAD favorite - the youngest and oldest retirees joining the commanders to cut the ceremonial cake.

The end of the ceremony did not mark the end of day — not by a longshot. Just outside the O-club’s main ballroom was a crowd of people waiting for the information fair and vaccine clinic to begin.

An event of this size couldn’t have been done without the help of volunteers and private donations — all coordinated by a small planning committee consisting of fulltime Army and Air Force employees, service members and, of course, military retirees residing in the area. According to the head

of that committee, Erik Thomsen — whose full-time duty is the garrison’s casualty manager and post-retirement service officer, said a RAD of this size wouldn’t have been possible without the committee and assistance from Landstuhl Regional Medical Center and the 86th Airlift Wing.

“I can’t say enough good things about the committee that came together,” said Thomsen. “It truly was a team effort and I couldn’t be more proud of this…it far exceeds what we had in mind this year.”

According o Thomsen, attendance nearly doubled that of last year’s RAD. He said this event is such a popular one because it gives attendees who may be having a problem with their federal benefits, Social Security or Veteran Affairs for example, the opportunity to meet representatives in person. They also can receive flu and COVID-19 vaccines and

be put in touch with the Army medical community.

Retired Sgt. Major Roy Ogborn, who retired from the Army in 1988 and now resides in Heidelberg, said it’s tricky being a military retiree in Germany and that this event gives him a chance to network and meet the people who can help him out.

“Everybody’s pitched in and doing their thing. If you need help, ‘here’s my number.’

If you need a service, ‘come and see us.’ It’s there,” he said.

Thomsen said aside from the important information gathering aspect of the RAD, it’s simply a good time to get everyone together.

“They can see their battle buddies… they can rekindle old friendships and they can talk with other folks that have the same mindset.”

Next year’s RAD is scheduled for Oct. 18.

Northern Challenge is an EOD exercise hosted by the Icelandic Coast Guard to train NATO Allies on current improvised explosive device threats and maintain proficiency by sharing experiences and knowledge to prepare teams to defeat devices on international missions on land and in maritime environments.

Iceland, a member of NATO since 1949, provides generous support for participants and is the ideal location for the EOD exercise. The Nordic country fosters a challenging climate, offers accessible diving locations and the abil-

ity to have live explosives. The latter is a critical factor for these types of exercises.

In addition to the U.S., participating nations were Austria, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, France, Germany, Iceland, Lithuania, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Poland and the United Kingdom. The exercise cultivated many opportunities to practice interoperability, with over 400 participants and 375 land and maritime tasks. Throughout the twoweek exercise tasks grew more difficult and harsh weather conditions persisted.

Land and maritime teams were briefed each morning about how to defeat the device with background information such as adversary TTPs and were provided an international directing staff and exercise control teams.

DECT set up the task, provided feedback on the team’s solution and reported how the team operated, leading to the understanding of how nations can operate alongside one another.

Disposal Company, 15th Engineer Battalion, 18th Military Police Brigade, 21st TSC, was proud of his team’s performance. This was Doherty’s first EOD exercise, and he liked the multi-national involvement, levels of experience and feedback.

“We will never know everything,” said Doherty. Working with different countries was the highlight of Doherty’s experience and he appreciated their input after tasks.

“It is always good to ask more questions than you think you will need because, then, it could give you more insight into the devices or the problems,” said Doherty.

This year was the 21st Northern Challenge exercise and a new intelligence aspect was introduced into the EOD scope. The intelligence section received reports from operators, DECTs, forensics, and engineers to analyze, assess and inform the commander on how to defeat the device.

“We have a complete intelligence cycle going on in this exercise,” said Denmark Army

Master Sgt. Rikke Rietveld, lead of the intelligence cell for Northern Challenge 22 and head of the EOD section at NATO Multinational Corps Northeast in Poland.

“It is very important for us to train our EOD operators to the newest trends and the newest threats that they might encounter,” said Rietveld.

Operators were taught the importance of preserving forensics and the process of gathering evidence safely and quickly. According to Rietveld, forensic awareness is an important task and function to teach operators. The evidence gathered is potentially used for court or prosecution and to build a network.

Rietveld said learning from one another was the purpose of the joint exercise. Understanding how teams operate builds interoperability by learning how nations can operate together.

Iceland’s central presence allows NATO Allies the opportunity to strengthen relationships and share experiences to contribute to future missions.

information. Doherty describes the job as both fun and hard because he comes across new devices and navigating around those devices can be difficult.

A native of Rochester, New York, Doherty enlisted in the Army at 18 years old and has served for 10 years. Doherty’s career choice keeps him engaged by always challenging him to learn about new devices and ways to defeat them.

Doherty led a team of explosive ordnance disposal specialists in the Northern Challenge 22 exercise in Keflavik, Iceland, Sept. 25 to Oct. 7. The sole EOD exercise encompassed 14

nations and executed 285 land tasks.

During one task, Doherty and two team members worked together to defeat a vehicleborne improvised explosive device. Doherty was highly knowledgeable on the execution, confident, and communicative with his team.

The team’s cohesion was vital to the success and safety of the mission. Once they exhausted semi-remote resources, Doherty put on the bomb suit to approach the VBIED. “Working as a team [and] having different ideas is a helpful tool keeping me alive whenever I go down there and deal with it,” said Doherty. Inside the bomb suit there is

a radio, so ideas and options can be shared and assessed.

Northern Challenge was Doherty’s first EOD exercise and he appreciated the vast levels of experience and feedback from the multi-national participants, not to mention the extreme Arctic weather conditions.

“It’s a good learning opportunity,” said Doherty. Even with the subpar climate, Doherty said he would “100 percent” participate in another EOD event.

In the future, Doherty plans to apply for the Green to Gold Program to become an EOD officer.

Honoring the Cruz family’s Hispanic heritage Story & photo collages by Sgt. Katelyn Myers 21st Theater Sustainment Command National Hispanic Heritage Month is a time to highlight the contributions Hispanic Americans have made for the United States of America. Sept. 15, the anniversary of Latin American independence, and continuing until Oct. 15, the United States honors and recognizes Hispanic influence on America.

Soldiers with ancestry from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, Central and South America, diversify our Military. Understanding the challenges that Hispanic Americans have faced, as well as their historical role, allows us to appreciate and celebrate this annual observance.

“My Hispanic heritage has always been the proud cornerstone of who I am, a Puerto Rican,” said Albert Cruz-Bianchi, civilian deputy for support operations of the 21st Theater Sustainment Command. “My parents spoke only the Spanish language and culture within our home while traveling from base to base, living the amazing life of an ‘Army BRAT’.”

Cruz’s connection to the military began with his father, Ernesto Cruz-Ortiz, in 1951.

Ernesto was from a family of 12 and joining the United States Army was a way he felt he could have independence. His first assignment was serving with the 65th Infantry Regiment, nicknamed “The Borinqueneers”

Ernesto joined the United States Army in 1951 when he enlisted in the Salinas Training Area, Puerto Rico. Ernesto served for 30 years to include three of those years with his son with the 2nd Battalion 33rd Armored Regiment, 3rd Armored Division, on “The Rock” at Kirch Goens, Federal Republic of Germany. and learn the art of leadership.

He also felt fortunate to learn and serve under battle-tested Korean and Vietnam senior combat arms non-commissioned officers and officers. Serving as an NCO provided him the leadership foundation and rite of passage to wear the “Green Leadership Tab” worn by both officers and NCOs in leadership positions. He commissioned as a 2nd lieutenant through the Army Ordnance Reserve Officers’ Training Corps Program at the University of Kentucky and served in various leadership positions for over 20 years.

“I joined the military in 1975 upon my graduation from Fort Knox High School so I could serve as an armor crewman on the M60A1 Tank with one of the greatest NCOs in the U.S. Army, my dad,” said Cruz. “He was and will always be my role model for his distinguished career of 30 years.”

The Ramstein Chapel is accepting bids for the Ramstein Catholic Holy Family Community Pastoral Life Coordinator from October 10 to 24, 2022. The contractor shall provide all personnel, labor, materials, and transportation to provide non-personal service in support of the Ramstein Catholic Faith Community as located in the KMC. The contractor will assist the priests in planning, development, and execution of the full-spectrum Catholic program on Ramstein Air Base as related to by the Statement of Work (SOW).

Cruz had the distinct honor to serve in the same unit as his father from 1976 till 1979 with the 2nd Battalion 33rd Armored Regiment, 3rd Armored Division, on “The Rock” at Kirch Goens, Federal Republic of Germany. Cruz served as an M60A1, armor crewman, for three years as a sergeant in charlie company and his father as a first sergeant of bravo company. After serving three years as an enlisted Soldier, Cruz spent two years as an armor crewman officer, then spent nearly 20 years as an ordnance corps officer. His brother, Nelson Cruz-Bianchi, served in the

U.S. Army from 1995 to 2022 and his other brother, Ernesto Cruz Jr., served in the U.S. Navy from 1973 to 1977. The Cruz family have felt a strong sense of patriotism for defending their nation.

“I have lived and served through many significant events during my 47 years of federal service,” said Cruz. “From watching the Vietnam conflict being televised every night, to protecting the Fulda Gap as an M60A1 tanker in the Federal Republic of Germany, to Desert Shield/Storm, and the terrorist acts of 9/11.”

These historical events are the

foundation of Cruz’s selfless service and have fueled his continuation as a Department of Army Civilian for 20 years.

“It’s important that Soldiers be proud of their culture and always educate others,” said Cruz. “I’m extremely humbled to have been asked to share my Hispanic Heritage story, for life is too short…’Yo soy un Borincano!’

Douro River Valley One of Portugal’s most beloved scenic landscapes, the Douro River Valley is the center of Portuguese wine country. Late summer and early autumn is the best time to visit if you want to see the terraced vineyards overflowing with produce. Be sure to check out the Douro ‘vinhateiro’ region, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and home to the best vineyards Portugal has to offer.
