F-22 Raptor aircraft from the 1st Fighter Wing at Joint Base Langley-Eustis, Virginia, have deployed to Europe for a Flight Training Deployment to conduct air training with other U.S. Europe-based aircraft and NATO Allies. Six aircraft and approximately 150 Airmen, who are returning to the United States from the U.S. Central Command Area of Responsibility, arrived to Royal Air Force Lakenheath, U.K., on Oct. 8. While in the European theater, the Airmen and aircraft will participate See RAPTOR, Page 2

Col. Clifton Reed, 6th Maintenance Group commander, visited Ramstein Air Base Oct. 2, to personally thank the Airmen who helped repair a KC-135 from MacDill Air Force Base, Fla., for their hard work and diligence. “The last 60 days were a testament to the teamwork and pride the 86th MXG has in mission generation

and customer support,” said Capt. Brandon Ray, 86th Maintenance Squadron operations officer. “It’s an honor that Col. Reed traveled from Florida to thank us for the support we provided on the KC-135 because we take great pride in embodying a ‘One Team, One Fight’ mentality.” The KC-135 Stratotanker landed at Ramstein because the plane experienced a fuel leak during a routine mission en route to Al Udeid Air Base, Qatar.

In addition to participation in the RAF exercise, Airmen and F-22 aircraft have forward deployed from the U.K. to Germany and Poland to demonstrate their ability to quickly respond and reassure allies and partners that the U.S. Air Force is here, in Europe, forward and ready. “The deployment of fifth-generation combat aircraft to the European AOR is a concrete example of how the U.S. is engaged, postured and ready with a credible force to assure, deter and defend in an increasingly complex security environment,” said Gen. to airfield infrastructure and prepositioning of air operations equipment and enablers in NATO-ally countries. The deployment of the fifth generation F-22 fighter marks the third time Raptors have deployed to Europe. The first deployment was to Spangdahlem Air Base, Germany, together with vis-

its to Estonia and Poland in August 2015. The second was to RAF Lakenheath, U.K., along with forward locations in Lithuania and Romania in April 2016. The F-22 Raptor is the world’s premiere operational fifth-generation fighter. Fifth-generation capability combines the attributes of maneuverability, advanced and fused avionics, multi-role capability and stealth technology. Last month, when Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. David L. Goldfein hosted President Donald Trump at the Joint Base Andrews Air and Space Expo, Goldfein said air superiority is and will continue to be paramount to the success of the U.S. military and that when it comes to air superiority, the fifth generation raises the game of the fourth generation. “The most important thing the Air Force provides the joint force is air superiority,” said Goldfein. “These developments allow the Air Force to overcome advanced enemy defenses that inhibit fourth generation aircraft.” For more information about the F-22 Raptor visit http://www.af.mil/ About-Us/Fact-Sheets/Display/ Article/104506/f-22-raptor/.

Blended Retirement System at a glance Story and photo by Airman 1st Class Savannah L. Waters 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs

Retirement is something every service member will think about, whether it be tomorrow or 20 years from now. But, do Airmen within the Kaiserslautern Military Community know what their retirement options are? The Thrift Savings Plan is a Federal Government-sponsored retirement savings and investment plan. The TSP offers the same type of investment savings and tax benefits that many private corporations offer their employees under 401(K) plans. The retirement income service members receive from their TSP account will depend on how much they have contributed to their account during working years and the earnings on those contributions, according to the Department of Defense. Beginning in 2018, service members can get automatic and matching Thrift Savings Plan contributions and midcareer compensation incentives in addition to a monthly

Airman 1st Class Daniela Pastor, 86th Airlift Wing Judge Advocate paralegal, throws money into the air April 7 on Ramstein Air Base. Beginning in 2018, service members have the opportunity to opt into a new Blended Retirement System, and can get automatic and matching Thrift Savings Plan contributions as well as mid-career compensation incentives in addition to a monthly annuity for life.

annuity for life. Members entering service after Jan. 1, 2018, will be automatically enrolled into the new Blended Retirement System, while those who joined after Dec. 31, 2005, but before Jan. 1, 2018, may opt into the new BRS if they choose. “The blended retirement

system is a new system developed for everyone instead of a certain group of people,” said Megan Lefevre, Airman & Family Readiness Center financial counselor. “The old retirement system was meant for people who are staying in a long time, whereas the new system addresses the fact some people

are joining the service for a short time. So if you joined the military to fund your education and then get out, the old retirement system really didn’t affect you at all.” In this new system, there is something a service member can gain, no matter how long their service. At least one percent of a member’s base pay will automatically be deposited to the TSP, however, members may elect to contribute up to five percent which will be matched by the government. “It comes down to how you can optimize the amount of money you get,” Lefevre said. “For people staying in 19 years and 364 days, the new system is better because you’d leave with nothing in the old system.” At 20 years, it becomes unclear as to what is better for the service member. Under the old system, when the member dies, their pension stops. With TSP, even if a member dies and they haven’t used all the funds, those funds can be given to whomever inherits their estate. “The new Blended Retirement System gives members, who don’t know if they

want to stay in for 20 years a chance to receive the benefit of compensation for time served,” said Airman 1st Class Vincent Conley, 86th Medical Operations Squadron mental health technician. “This new system also sways members to set up their TSP, which is also, in my opinion, beneficial as military members.” There are endless scenarios that could apply, but it is important members understand every individual’s situation is different, and it’s highly recommended they make an appointment with an A&FRC financial counselor to ensure they are making the right choice for their future. Financial counselors from the A&FRC also teach a class every other week on the BRS, which is very similar to the online training members are required to take before they are able to opt in. Once members officially choose to opt in, the action is irrevocable. For more information on BRS and how to opt in or to make an appointment with an A&FRC financial counselor, contact the A&FRC at 4805100 or 480-7185, or at 06371-

86th MDS offers drug disposal Story and photo by Airman 1st Class Joshua Magbanua 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Often when people are prescribed medications they end up with more than they need. Rather than letting them expire patients should dispose of them. But some people feel uneasy about using the FDA accepted methods of throwing medication in the garbage or pouring it down the drain, especially in an environmentally conscious country like Germany. The 86th Medical Squadron pharmacy offers patients an option to properly dispose of unused prescription medicine on Ramstein Air Base. According to the Military Health System and Defense Health Agency, medical treatment facilities overseas operate under their host nation’s medical disposal guidelines, according to the agency’s website health.mil. When the maintenance recovery team arrived from MacDill, the 86th MXS team assigned to repair the KC-135 discovered the leak was because of a ruptured fuel bladder on the aircraft’s left wing. A new fuel bladder arrived Aug. 24 and during the pressurization and leak checks the team found another fuel leak on the same wing. Troubleshooting to identify the cause of the fuel leak, the team found a 5-inch crack under the cabin floor causing pressurization issues resulting in the ruptured fuel bladders. “There was a crack in what we call the pressure web,” said Tech. Sgt. Zachary Sidlovsky, 86th MXS aircraft structural maintenance craftsman. “It’s not just a metal tank where it holds all this pressurization, but a thick synthetic rubber cell. It’s like a sardine can, it would get tight and all that pressurization would leak down into the fuel cell through the crack, eventually exploding the cell.” The 86th MXS fabricated, milled, trimmed, and primed pieces for installation, then installed and sealed them. Together the teams executed a 96-hour structural repair and a 30-hour repair for the fuel bladder installation, the leaks and the pressurization checks.

Base has a return bin where individuals may place their expired or unwanted medication. The bin is located in the lobby and is available for use during the pharmacy’s operating hours. “It has been available for some time,” said Master Sgt. Jonathan Strom, 86th MDS Pharmacy Flight Chief. “Our bin is secured at all times and picked up by a local contractor who disposes of the collection in accordance with German laws and regulations. We also coordinate drug take back events with the Landstuhl Regional Medical Center pharmacy on occasion.” The MHS and DHA also pointed out that the availability of unwanted, unused and expired prescription drugs are a major contributor to drug abuse. According to health.mil, safe and proper disposal of unneeded drugs can benefit patients.

“We saw two different bases get together, we all made a game plan, and stuck to it,” Sidlovsky said. “It was one of the rare occasions where everything just meshed really well.” As this team worked, the 86th MXG also worked on other high profile, high impact projects, supporting crews from the California National

“We pride ourselves on never letting our team mates down, and we have a ready and resilient team prepared to answer the call at a moment’s notice,” Ray said. “As a leader, it’s remarkable to look back at everything we’ve accomplished. But, then again, for us this is just standard ops!”

Sesame Street teaches KMC children resiliency

Sesame Street characters sing a song to the audience at the USO’s Sesame Street Tour Oct. 5 on Ramstein Air Base. The show consisted of a medley of songs and dances, teaching military children how to adjust to frequent changes in their lives.

Story and photos by Airman 1st Class Milton Hamilton Jr. 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs The United Service Organi zations’ Sesame Street Tour was a free event held for mili tary members and their families on Ramstein Oct. 5 to 6 on Ramstein Air Base. “The tour was created to help military children under stand changes in their lives,” said Tracy Thede, USO, enter tainment tour producer. The production began on military bases in Italy and is currently touring in Germany before finishing up in Spain. The show focused on a mili tary child who moved away from Sesame Street to live on a military base for a few years. Overall, there are a lot of positive effects children experience when having to move many times, said Sarah Dorosky, 86th Mission Support Group school liaison officer. “Children become more resilient and learn to adapt to change after having to move around alot,” said Dorosky. “It’s easier for some children over others, but eventually

they adjust.” Military children are fan tastic at making friends and become very sociable adults, said Dorosky. They learn skills that will last a lifetime. Despite the pros, there are challenges for children adjust ing to military life. Children who are shy or more routine oriented some times find it harder to adjust to their new surroundings, said Dorosky. “A program called student to student that has been adopt ed by KMC high schools, essentially mirrors the mili tary’s sponsor program,” said Dorosky. “For a newly arrived child, their sponsor is their first friend and a person who can help them to get involved.” Schools in this area are meant to help military children adjust to new environments, said Dorosky. That’s the great thing about the KMC area. There are a lot of programs spe cifically created to help children settle into a new place. The USO and SLO are organizations created to help ease the burdens for service members and their families. Even though the KMC chil

dren had fun and enjoyed the USO’s Sesame Street Show, they didn’t know they would also be learning a lesson in resiliency.

Cybersecurity Awareness Month kicks off year-long Army campaign

Graphic by U.S. Army

This month, U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz recognizes National Cybersecurity Awareness Month and empowers community members to be safer and more secure online.

by Erinn Burgess U.S. Army Garrison RheinlandPfalz Installation Management Command Directorate The internet is part of everyday life. Whether you are sending an email, ordering something from a website, communicating with friends via social media or looking up the directions to your next destination, you are accessing a world-spanning digital media highway where information is stored, processed and distributed. It doesn’t take much for that information to end up in the wrong hands. This month, U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz, and Army garrisons around the globe, recognize National Cybersecurity Awareness Month and empower community members to be safer and more secure online. USAG RP Information Systems Security Manager Tracy McManus said the internet has profoundly shaped how we work and live. “Increasingly, we depend on the internet as a means to execute the business of our personal and pro-

fessional lives,” McManus said. “Unfortunately, we are often forced to expose information about ourselves in order to interact online, and this exposure increases the risk that cybercriminals can steal and misuse our data.” Cybercriminals pose a threat not only to our personal data, but to the operational execution of Army missions. Lt. Gen. Paul Nakasone, commanding general of U.S. Army Cyber Command, explained people are witnessing a fundamental change and transformation in the character of war — a transformation being driven by technology. “We should anticipate cyberattacks, not only cyberattacks in an area of conflict but against the homeland, certainly against our critical infrastructure and key resources,” he predicted. McManus encouraged community members to familiarize themselves with online threats and review tips and practices to employ when using the web to keep themselves and the mission safe. The Department of Homeland Security outlines five

everyday steps towards online safety: • Enable stronger authentication: Stronger authentication, such as a multi-factor authentication that issues a one-time code to a mobile phone, helps verify that a user has authorized access to an online account. • Make your passwords long and strong: Use complex passwords with a combination of numbers, symbols and letters. Use unique passwords for different accounts. • Keep a clean machine: Update the security software, operating system and web browser on all of your internet-connected devices. • When in doubt, throw it out: Links in email and online posts are often the way cybercriminals compromise your computer. If it looks suspicious, delete it. • Share with care: Limit the amount of personal information you share online and use privacy settings to avoid sharing information widely. This month, cybersecurity expert Bruce Grantham visits Army garrisons throughout Europe to deliver training on social networking and

internet self-defense. The training encompasses spearfishing, ransomware, viruses, cyberbullying, the dark net, web cookies, virtual private networks and more. The effort to bring awareness to cyber threats doesn’t end after October. This month marks the beginning of a year-long Army Cybersecurity Awareness Campaign, building a culture for improving cybersecurity and Army mission readiness. Army Chief Information Officer/Communications Lt. Gen. Bruce Crawford explained the campaign will promote opportunities for training, increase awareness of cybersecurity responsibilities and highlight policies to keep the Army safe and secure. “Cybersecurity is a readiness priority to enable operational commanders the ability to effectively execute our mission and protect our Soldiers,” he said. This month and in the months to follow, McManus reminds Soldiers, families and civilians that securing the internet is a shared responsibility that is imperative to our people and mission.

New deputy to the commander brings region experience to garrison

Kevin L. Griess, Ph.D. (Left), the new U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz deputy to the garrison commander, speaks to Penelope A. Miller-Smith, Kaiserslautern Elementary School principal, at the KES ground breaking ceremony Sept. 29 at Vogelweh.

by Mary Ann Davis U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz Installation Management Command Directorate When Kevin L. Griess, Ph.D., arrived at U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz last month, he hit the ground running — no fanfare, no fuss — just hard work and drive to get things done. But that’s how the USAG RP’s new deputy to the garrison commander works — drawing upon his 36 years of civil service, relying on his training and throwing in some good old-fashioned farm values and common sense. Griess came to the garrison from Installation Management Command Headquarters where he served as the IMCOM-Europe liaison officer. He’s also familiar with his current garrison duties since he served as the deputy garrison commander at USAG Schweinfurt (2011-2013) and USAG Ansbach (20132015), so relocating back to Germany was like coming home, he said. “My family was originally immigrated from Edenkoben, Germany, right here in the Rheinland-Pfalz,” he said. “I’m back from where my family initially came from. I am a Rheinland-Pfälzer.” Being a seventh generation GermanAmerican, he still subscribes to very traditional German values of family first, hard work, good laughter and pride in your community. Although he was raised in Sutton, Nebraska — over 4,000 miles away from the Rheinland-Pfalz area — much of his upbringing mirrored the traditional farm values of Germany, he said.

“I grew up in a farm community. Your hard work on a farm is valued. Your character as a person is valued. It’s not your title or what you do, it’s how you do it,” explained Griess, a Nebraska Cornhuskers fan. “Traditional values include taking care of your family. Your job as the head of the household is making sure your children are raised right and learn the same values through hard work. Airman 1st Class Kevin Griess, an Air Force law-enforcement patrolman and K-9 handler, poses with his military working dog, Rex, in 1981. He later retired as a senior noncommissioned officer in 2002 after 21 years of service. Griess became the U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz deputy to the garrison commander last month.

From farm boots to military boots, Griess joined the Air Force at 17 as a law-enforcement patrolman and K-9 handler in 1981, and more than two decades later, he retired as a senior non-commissioned officer in 2002. “When you join the military, you are a part of something larger than yourself. You subscribe to being able to sacrifice your life and limit your own freedoms in order to serve,” he said. “I was both law enforcement and military police — both are core service.” From his years of being a K-9 handler, Griess said his best leadership lesson came from his partner — a military working dog named Zeus. “I learned a lot about trust from him. When you work with a police dog, you go into some high-risk situations — gunfire, attacks — and you have to trust your dog. So what that experience taught me about leadership is I have to trust my employees, my teammates and my Army professionals,” he said. “They work for me and I work for and with them — not through a leash using the Uniform Code of Military Justice or laws, but through trust. Believe it or not, a dog taught me a lot about letting go of my own natural desire to control. So when I became a leader, I learned to trust my subordinates and my leaders.” Griess had a deep-seated desire to continue serving after 21 years of military service, so he began as a Department of the Army civilian employee working in the antiterrorism office at Camp Humphreys, Korea. “I didn’t want to stop serving because

of a simple piece of [retirement] paper. I still believed in the greater thing, which is our national security. I felt like I could still serve,” he said. “I feel the DGC position is the epitome of service, because my whole job is taking care of our Soldiers so they will be able to fight and so their families can have good quality of life. My job is to do that with the least expenditure of Army funds with maximum benefit and through the trust and respect of our civilian employees who are in federal service. I consider myself to be a professional civil servant.” To improve himself as a professional civil servant, Griess hit the books and earned several degrees over the years, culminating in a doctorate in organizational leadership from Capella University in 2014. He draws upon his experience, education and training in his role as the USAG RP deputy to the garrison commander, where he said people can expect an “obsessive, dedication to service and community above all else.” That’s what he cares about. “The last thing warfighters have to worry about are their families while they are away. So spouses, children or whomever remains within my area of responsibility will know I have their back,” he said. “Am I always going to be able to provide service the way they want it? Not always. I’m constrained by the Army budget and many different things. What the community should know is that within these constraints and with all my years of experience and training, that I will do the very best that I can for them every day.”

Ramstein celebrates Fire Prevention Week by Airman 1st Class Devin M. Rumbaugh, 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs

Members of the Kaiserslautern Military Community watch a live training demonstration during the Fire Prevention Week open house Oct. 7 on Ramstein Air Base. The demonstration involved fire fighters putting out a simulated aircraft fire. Fire Departments from Ramstein-Miesenbach, Landstuhl, Carlsberg, and Technical Relief Foundation (THW) Kaiserslautern, participated in the parade and open house. This year’s theme, “Every second counts, plan two ways out!” encourages families to have more than one exit plan in case of an emergency.

Ingredients

(for 4 people) 1 pound potatoes 1 pound red onions 1 red pepper 1 tsp fennel seeds 4 chicken breasts with skin Salt and pepper to taste 4 tablespoons olive oil 1 tablespoon honey 4-5 cups chicken broth 1 cup cherry tomatoes 1 stalk rosemary Peel potatoes. Slice very thin, between 1-2 millimeters. Peel and cut onions. Slice into 1 centimeter slices. Prepare red pepper pod. Cut in half. Remove seeds and cut in thin rings. Put fennel

seed in mortar and grind coarsely. Season chicken breast with salt and pepper. Heat oil in cast iron soup pot, if you have one. Put the chicken in the pot. Roast chicken breast on all sides, with skin on. Remove when they are nicely brown on all sides. Add onions and fennel seeds and let simmer for 2 minutes. Add honey and potatoes. Stir and let all simmer for another 3 to 4 minutes. Add 3 - 4 cups chicken broth. Let simmer for 3-4 minutes. Place chicken breast on top with the skin side up. Add rosemary. Put in preheated oven on 220 Celsius. Put on lowest possible level and let bake for 15 minutes. Check while stew is in oven to see if it needs more liquid. If so, add the final cup of broth at this time. Cut cherry tomatoes in half. Two minutes before stew is done, add the cherry tomatoes. To plate, use a deep dish plate, place chicken on one side and vegetables on the other and cover in broth. Serve with garlic butter baguette and a Bardolino Chiaretto or another rose wine.

Klaus learned from an early age that he had an interest in food and cooking when he started helping in his parent’s restaurant at the age of ten. He enjoyed the environment so much, that he started an apprenticeship at the Augsburger Hotel Riegele at the age of 16. Klaus has been working in hotels and restaurants ever since, including the famous Ecke Stuben in Augsburg and the Post Hotel in Garmisch-Partenkirchen. Throughout his career he has been cooking traditional German and international dishes and found his love for crossover cuisine. Many of the recipes Klaus presents are his own crossover creations, which he is happy to share with you. Klaus has been offering private cooking classes for around three years now for groups up to eight people, either in your own home or in Klaus’ kitchen in the KMC, for slow food enjoyment with family and friends.

Transportation experts deliver morale to Airmen Story and photos by Senior Airman Tryphena Mayhugh 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs For many service members, especially those stationed overseas, mail can be a lifeline to family, friends, and feeling connected to home. For those stationed within U.S. Air Forces in Europe and Air Forces Africa, there is a team of Airmen dedicated to providing timely, cost effective, and efficient mail services. The USAFE-AFAFRICA Air Postal Squadron represents the major commands as the single point of contact for Air Force postal matters. The squadron provides policy, procedures, and guidance for all USAFE-AFAFRICA postal operating locations and exercises command of aerial mail terminals assigned to the USAFE-AFAFRICA AIRPS. In a nutshell, the squadron ensures all mail travelling to and from the major command is transported by the fastest and most reliable means possible, while also ensuring the right mail goes to the right place. “Our mission is essentially to get your mail to you,” said Staff Sgt. Dereth Worrell, USAFE-AFAFRICA AIRPS noncommissioned officer in charge of command postal transportation. “What my flight does, as we like to put it, if the post offices in the states and Army Post Offices here are A and Z, we cover everything from B to Y. We set up things like how your mail moves, what it takes to move, or should a new APO open. The AIRPS Postal Transportation

Staff Sgt. Patrick Murphy, U.S. Air Forces in Europe and Air Forces Africa Air Postal Squadron mail control postal specialist, inspects mail loaded onto a truck to ensure it is going to the right location Oct. 5 in Frankfurt. The USAFE AFAFRICA AIRPS has detachments in Frankfurt, Germany; London and Istanbul to oversee the offloading, inspecting, sorting, and loading onto trucks the mail undergoes.

flight validated a total volume of approximately 40 million pounds of inbound and outbound mail moved from Sept. 1, 2016, to Sept. 1, 2017. The journey a package undergoes to reach its final destination is a long process that requires many moving parts. Once a package is dropped off at a local post office in the states, it is shipped to a U.S. Postal Service sorting facility in Chicago, within the O’Hare International Airport that is two football fields long. This facility processes Priority Mail and Priority Mail Express Military Service going overseas, whether it’s civilian, military, or Department of State. Joint Military Postal Activity military personnel are assigned as liaisons to the USPS at the Chicago mail sorting facility. At the sorting plant, mail is sorted and loaded onto commercial aircraft flying to one of the three main hubs for military mail in Frankfurt, Germany; London and Istanbul. However, for military post offices in Germany, Belgium, and the Netherlands, mail can also be shipped to a USPS sorting facility in Jersey City, New Jersey, to a facility that processes retail ground and space available mail destined for APOs in those three countries. Additionally, JMPA personnel are also assigned as liaisons to the USPS at the New Jersey mail sorting facility. “No one really thinks about the transportation aspect,” Worrell said. “They think, ‘Oh, I ordered this or my friends or family sent me this, and two weeks later it shows up in my box.’ It takes a lot of work. You’re dealing with so many entities and factors that can change everything, such as weather or civil disturbances. Waiting two and half weeks to get something isn’t that bad considering everything that box has to go through in order to get to you.” The squadron has detachments at the hubs, for which the air postal

squadron provides the tools, resources, policy, and oversight while adhering to postal policies outlined by USPS, the Air Force, Military Postal Service Agency, and the Air Force and Army major commands in Europe. They also manage mail movement to include the monitoring of Department of Defense official and personal mail in military and commercial transportation channels. While most of the handling of the mail is done by contractors, the Airmen in the detachments oversee the offloading, inspecting, sorting, and loading onto trucks the mail undergoes. “My favorite part was when I was working at the air mail terminal in Turkey and actually seeing everything move, getting to load up the trucks, make sure everything was there and sending it off,” Worrell said. “It was very physical, and yes you were pretty much doing the same thing every day – I pick up box, I move box – but it was eye opening.” The U.S. Air Force works hand in hand with the U.S. Army to deliver mail throughout Europe. The Air Force is in charge of air transportation, but once all the packages and letters have been loaded into their respective trucks, the Army takes over the ground transportation. Receiving mail can seem like such a small thing, but it can have a positive effect on Airmen. “Mail is a very significant component of morale and greater morale has proven to be a major contributor to Airmen productivity,” said Master Sgt. Gregory Sartain, USAFEAFAFRICA functional area manager. “Happy folks are better working folks. We are directly contributing to the delivery of Grandma’s cookies to the Airman who’s never been overseas.” USAFE-AFAFRICA not only handles the transportation of personal mail, they are also responsible for the transportation of official mail

throughout the theater. “Not only do we have a big piece of the personal mail side for every Airman, civilian, and Department of Defense contractor, but we also directly contribute to the mission by ensuring the units have the parts, equipment, and supplies needed to execute their missions,” Sartain said. “We’re talking about aircraft parts, communications pieces, things that are very important.” The air postal squadron Airmen not only provide mail services to those stationed overseas, when they are deployed they provide the same services to the military members in deployed locations. “Mail is appreciated in garrison, however, when you’re in a deployed environment, it’s different,” Sartain said. “When the Airman, Soldier, Marine, or Sailor gets that letter from home that smells like their girlfriend’s perfume or they get cookies from mom while in a hostile and austere condition, it means more. There’s nothing more gratifying then handing a package to a service member and see their face light up. I really enjoy the deployments, being able to provide that morale support, which at times is crucial in a wartime situation.” The squadron conducts annual inspections and audits of USAFEAFAFRICA postal operating locations’ postal effects, verifies accountability and serviceability of postal equipment, and coordinates with many entities on contingency and exercise postal support in response to USAFE-AFAFRICA, USEUCOM, USAFRICOM, Department of Defense, Joint Chiefs of Staff, U.S. Army Europe, and U.S. Navy Europe requirements. The staff Airmen stationed at Ramstein work with air carriers, USPS, and other entities to ensure the best service possible is used in transporting service members’ mail. This can be coming to agreements with contractors to provide timely deliveries, finding new ways to deliver mail more often to a certain area, or making sure companies adhere to the agreed upon standards. “The most rewarding thing working on staff is when we set up a new lane,” Worrell said. “It’s knowing we made someone’s day get just a little bit brighter because we were able to get their mail to them a little bit faster.” The USAFE-AFAFRICA AIRPS Airmen use their skills to bridge the distance between service members stationed in Europe away from home and their loved ones.

The leaves start turning orange and yellow, coffee shops start smelling like pumpkin spice, and Halloween costumes line the shelves in every store. But for some, Halloween planning started months ago. Members of the 435th Construction and Training Squadron, 1st Combat Communications Squadron, 1st Air and Space Communications Operations Squadron and 435th Contingency Response Squadron have been constructing a haunted house for Ramstein Air Base. “This is my first year hosting a haunted house on Ramstein,” said McDermott. “I hosted three haunted houses at my last base, so I have some experience with putting them together.” McDermott said he started planning the haunted house when he discovered the building. Once he tracked down the building custodian, he started on the paperwork to get the ball rolling. “Obtaining clearances with the Safety Offices and Fire Protection took the longest,” said McDermott. “I’ve had the

keys to the building for almost a month and a half, but I’ve only been working here for about two weeks.” McDermott said all of the supplies being used for the haunted house were either donated, recycled, or purchased to get the facility to the level of fright he desired. The haunted house is being put together by volunteers and the amount of volunteers has grown since the start of the project. “The most people we have had on the build crew was

Only the Brave (R)

All men are created equal... then, a few become firefighters. Only the Brave, based on the true story of the Granite Mountain Hotshots, is the heroic story of one unit of local firefighters that through hope, determination, sacrifice, and the drive to protect families, communities, and our country become one of the most elite firefighting teams in the country. As most of us run from danger, they run toward it — they watch over our lives, our homes, everything we hold dear, as they forge a unique brotherhood that comes into focus with one fateful fire. THE AWAKENING – HALLOWEEN AT FRANKENSTEIN CASTLE

When you think about the ultimate in Halloween experiences, obviously Frankenstein’s Castle is right up there near the top! We decided to do the tour during the day, mostly, because I am a big baby. I also hate the feeling of someone lurking in the dark with the intent to terrify me, especially if I am paying for it.

As a female over the age of puberty, I recommend that you be prepared for some inappropriate behavior. I can only imagine what the nighttime adult experience must have been! Photo by Cheryl Koller

What to Expect The days are family friendly and the nights are more adult-oriented. A Bit of History Frankenstein Castle (or in German: Burg Frankenstein) is a hilltop castle overlooking the city of Darmstadt. This castle may have been an inspiration for Mary Shelley’s 1818 Gothic Novel Frankenstein. There is no definite proof that this is true… only that she traveled to the area prior to writing the novel. In 1978, American Airmen from the 435th Transportation Squadron started an

annual Halloween festival at the castle, which became one of the biggest Halloween festivals in Europe. While it was not “scary” per se, it was definitely a little bit on the “creepy” side. I am convinced that the local talent (men dressed as various types of monsters) view this particular event as an opportunity to, let’s just say, exercise various degrees of public displays of affection. My teen daughters and I became a source of amusement when we screamed and ran from these “monsters” as they (for lack of better words) groped us. Fortunately, my husband was with us and served as a bodyguard. I think he had reached his husband/father limit by the time we left. Overall, it was good fun and we enjoyed the experience. As I said, we went during family friendly hours and there were many smaller
