Professional Airlift: A team sport by Lt. Col. Jeremy Ponn Commander, 76th Airlift Squadron Just before 1 a.m. (7 p.m. EDT) on Saturday, Oct. 13, a Ramsteinassigned C-37 delivered Andrew Brunson to his first stop on a return trip to the United States. Brunson, a U.S. pastor who lived and ministered in Turkey, had been held by the Turkish judiciary for two years following the attempted coup in 2016. The White House-directed mission, executed on short notice just hours after initial notification, flawlessly demonstrated the 86th Airlift Wing’s ability to provide professional airlift to any country, any time, from the pavement up. Most importantly, it showcased that our airlift mission is truly a team sport. All too often, we collectively get lost in the daily grind of our day-today mission, and as the adage goes, See PROFESSIONAL AIRLIFT, Page 2

PROFESSIONAL AIRLIFT from Page 1 it is hard to see the forest for the trees. While I’m sure this summary may omit an outstanding contributor to the incredibly talented team that made this mission happen, allow me to highlight a few ways in which Ramstein Airmen touched our ability to repatriate Pastor Brunson. The notification began at 1:01 a.m. via telephones and networks maintained by 86th Communications Squadron personnel. Initially, details were sparse and required transfer of original tasking discussions to secure internet protocol network traffic — another 86th CS touchpoint. As details unfolded, members of a 76th Airlift Squadron crew who were scheduled to complete a local training sortie were reassigned to support the mission. As initial details of the pickup location were passed to the 86th Operations Group, 86th Logistics Readiness Squadron fuels personnel were alerted to increase the fuel load on the aircraft to allow the crew to fly to and from Turkey without the need to refuel on the ground, expediting Pastor Brunson’s return. Members of the 86th Aeromedical Evacuation Squadron and the 86th Medical Group prepared to provide Pastor Brunson with medical care, to include the last-minute addition of a flight surgeon and nurse to the growing crew from the 76th AS. The 86th Operations Support Squadron provided time-sensitive intelligence and facilitated arming of aircrew members that were flying into an unknown political situation. 76th AS flight attendants quickly rushed to the DECA Commissary to shop and prep Pastor Brunson’s first meal on American “soil” — the C-37 aircraft. Commissary personnel opened dedicated lanes to allow the crew to quickly check out and move on to preparing meals for Pastor Brunson and his wife. The crew was supported by a host of entities in the 86th OG, who professionally worked diplomatic clear-

ance issues with 86th OSS and 603rd Air Mobility Division personnel. The crew stepped to the jet and prepared to launch off airfield surfaces maintained by 86th Civil Engineer Group personnel. Simultaneously, another crew was placed in crew rest to transfer Pastor Brunson back to the U.S. after a planned short refueling stop (86th LRS again) and crew change, facilitated by transient alert contract personnel. As is often the case with short notice missions, things changed. Plans were adjusted for a possible stay of a few days at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center, supported by 86th MDG personnel and a joint force of caregivers just up the hill. Ultimately, the decision was made to execute a short overnight stay, enabled by Force Support Squadron personnel and the 86th AW Protocol office. 86th Security Forces defenders secured the

ramp and provided escort for U.S. State Department personnel who arrived from all over Germany to welcome Pastor Brunson. 86th OSS personnel safely and efficiently guided the aircraft to an approach at Ramstein in the dead of night with fog rolling into the airfield — to instrument landing systems maintained by their personnel and powered by the 86th CEG. Again the 86th LRS touched the mission, providing transportation for Pastor Brunson and his wife from the flight line to the hotel, in a bus professionally maintained by 86th Vehicle Readiness Squadron personnel. Overnight, while Pastor Brunson slept, members of the 86th Maintenance Group completed inspections on the jet, preparing it for the alert crew the next morning. That crew, unable to prepare the 76th AS’ standard of exemplary service while in alert status, were helped by a host

of additional 76th AS personnel who prepped food for the next day’s mission. At 5:45 a.m. the next morning, the crew was alerted while Pastor Brunson was provided with medical care by the 86th MDG. The jet departed at 9:11 a.m. arriving exactly on time at 12 p.m. EDT at Andrews Air Force Base, Md., where Pastor Brunson was greeted by members of the State Department and rushed to a meeting with President Donald Trump just two hours later. So if you ever wonder how YOU contribute to the 86th Airlift Wing’s mission of Professional Airlift, remember this story. It takes a team, and the members of the 76th AS and I salute your support and dedication to our mission. Each one of you plays a part every day; remember that next time you’re looking at that task you do each day — they all matter. This team makes Professional Airlift happen.

Berlin hosts NATO-Industry Forum The NATO-Industry Forum is the primary venue for strategic dialogue with the defence and security industry on NATO capability planning and development. Sponsored by NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, the Forum is co-organised by Supreme Allied C om m a n d e r Transformation, General André Lanata, and NATO Assistant Secretary General for Defence Investment, Mr. Camille Grand. This year the Forum builds upon the Brussels Summit in which NATO Heads of State and

Government highlighted that “We will further develop our partnership with industry and academia from all Allies to keep pace with technological advances through innovation.” and bridges to the 2019 series of events celebrating NATO’s 70th anniversary. The Forum is organised with four breakout sessions in the afternoon of Nov. 12 and three plenary sessions on Nov. 13. The breakout sessions will address options to meet NATO capability priorities and to improve NATO logistics and sustainment, to enhance military decision making, and to leverage the

novel and disruptive technologies in the development of modern capabilities, with a specific focus on autonomous systems. The plenary sessions will elevate the discussion on innovation and disruptive technologies at senior level, further building upon the trans-Atlantic cooperation in the development of policies and strategies that would allow NATO and Allies to embrace novel technologies, and will conclude with actionable recommendations that will allow NATO, in partnership with industry, to be ready for the challenges of the next decades.

The NATO-Industry Forum will include contributions f rom NATO Ambassadors and Military Representatives, senior representatives of Germany as host nation, NATO and European institutions, Chief Executive Officers and Senior Executives from the defence and security industry, think-tankers and other opinion formers. The event will take place on Nov. 12 to 13 in Berlin, at the Sheraton Grand Hotel Esplanade. For additional information, please refer to http://www.act.nato.int/ industryforum

Ramstein Airmen assist French forces with Super Hercules transition by Staff Sgt. Jonathan Bass 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs In today’s coalition environment, developing strong ties between partner nations is of utmost importance. Team Ramstein Airmen worked with French airmen to pass along valuable information and tactics in regards to the French air force’s newest C-130J Super Hercules aircraft. U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Matthew Fry, 37th Airlift Squadron evaluator loadmaster, met with a loadmaster assigned to the French Comete, the air force’s new C-130J squadron, at the Berlin Air Show. They discussed the upgrades the ‘J’ model offers that the legacy models do not. “We have been operating the C-130J since it was first produced in the 1990s and have thousands of hours of experience in the aircraft,” Fry said. “A lot of the questions the French forces have we are able to answer or we know who to contact for them.” passport outreach from Page 1 passports and reports of birthabroad on their web sites to aid in filling out applications prior to the event. Two of the biggest differences between the older ‘E’ and ‘H’ models and the ‘J’ model is the additional 15 feet of length in the fuselage and increasing from four to six blade propellers. This allows the ‘J’ model to climb

higher and farther more quickly while taking off and landing with a shorter runway. “Given the importance of this aircraft to the French mission, the future FrenchGerman blended unit, and

On-site passport photo support will not be available this time; please obtain photos prior to the event. The MOMS Photo Lab at Ramstein is offering early opening hours (7 a.m.) on Oct. 23 and 24 to provide passport photo support for the event. the significance of the effort required to get the C-130J delivered on time, I think we can consider this a huge ‘win’ on the U.S. Air Force international affairs front,” said U.S. Air Force Lt. Gen. Richard M. Clark, former 3rd Air

Force-17th Expeditionary Air Force commander, who attended the inaugural French C-130J ceremony. “We have been acting in a supportive role in their transition,” Fry said. “The French are currently writing their operating instruction and are adding things to the technical orders provided by Lockheed Martin.” Fry continued to say that on an operational level this partnership is vitally important because of how often the 37th AS works with NATO allies. “This will be the second NATO country who operates the same aircraft with the same capabilities as our own,” he said. “The United Kingdom also flies the ‘J’ model.” The 37th AS is planning a training event with the French military in Orleans, France. Partnering with NATO allies is of strategic importance and is part of the 86th Airlift Wing’s priorities to be “The World’s Best Wing.”

Stay vigilant for African Swine Fever Story and photos by Staff Sgt. Jonathan Bass 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Scientists recently found wild boar in Belgium, roughly 37 miles from the German border, which tested positive for a deadly illness, African Swine Fever. The virus, which is only transmitted between pigs and their wild relatives, poses no risk to humans, but is 100 percent fatal to swine. Seeing as Germany is the European Union’s leading supplier and exporter of pork and pork products, this virus poses an economic threat. According to a U.S. European Command directive issued in May of this year, the virus can be carried on contaminated equipment, vehicles, animal products, clothing, gear, or other materials. The virus, which can survive on carcasses for several weeks, has the potential to cause damage to the German economy. In fact, the last outbreak in Eastern Europe caused several billion euros in losses. “ASFV is a big problem for pig farmers,” said Major Nathan Waters, 603 Air Operations Center cyberspace warfare operations chief. “So much so that the Kaiserslautern Forestry Department has loosened the regulations regarding the taking of boar.” Waters, an avid hunter, said the department has a plan to handle the virus should it invade German soil. “Right now we can take almost any pig,” said Waters. “We’re also allowed to use green spot lights during dark hours of hunting. But within an hour of the kill we have to take it to the testing office so they can send samples

off to see if it has ASFV.” Culling the infected population is the most effective way to handle an outbreak of ASFV. Romanians culled thousands of pigs during the 2014 outbreak. US Army Europe: Modernizing at the tip of the spear by Spc. Kelsey VanFleet U.S. Army Europe The European theater is an everchanging landscape requiring constant adaptation to defend U.S. allies and deter potential aggression. To stay ready, U.S. Army Europe is focused on modernizing by exploring new technology, fielding upgraded equipment and adding additional capabilities. The fielding of next generation combat vehicles is one of the U.S. Army’s six modernization priorities. In December, the 2nd Cavalry Regiment received the U.S. Army’s first Stryker Infantry Carrier Vehicle — Dragoon, or ICVD. The upgraded vehicle was named after the Soldiers who serve in the 2nd Cavalry Regiment known as the “Dragoons.” The Stryker’s two .50 caliber machine guns were replaced with an unmanned turret and remotely-operated 30 mm autocannon. The ICVD also featured a fully-integrated commander’s station, upgraded suspension and larger tires. Furthermore, the 2nd Cavalry Regiment fielded the addition of Common Remotely Operated Weapons Station — Javelin to their Strykers, known as an Infantry Carrier Vehicle — Javelin. These modernization measures mean Soldiers no longer have to leave their vehicle, which previously put them at risk of fire. Throughout 2018, U.S. Army Europe put the new Strykers to the test — from winter live ammunition test fires in Germany and a road march through Eastern Europe to a summer exercise with 19 ally and partner nations and joint, combined arms live fire exercises in Poland. “The ICVD provides an all-weather, limited visibility, long range target acquisition with long range fires capability that is challenging and changing the way we fight,” said Capt. Brandon Shorter, 2nd Cavalry Regiment.

Vehicles aren’t the only systems being upgraded in Europe. Another priority of Army modernization is computer networks. As the U.S. Army’s only forwarddeployed Airborne brigade, the 173rd Airborne Brigade is uniquely positioned to test emerging electronic warfare and signal technology. In 2018, units from the 173rd Airborne Brigade replaced radio communication with the Integrated Tactical Networks. ITN fuses an intuitive interface, a secure but unclassified network, and a portable mission command platform into one system. The platform allows leaders to track positions, send text messages, use voice communication and share pictures. The 1st Battalion, 503rd Infantry Regiment received the new equipment two days prior to their combined-arms live-fire exercise. The ITN uses equipment Soldiers are already familiar with. This enabled them to get the radio telephone operators and platoon leaders familiar enough to use the system in time for the exercise. “When the platform is fully implemented, paratroopers will have an additional quality radio and access to the same common operating picture as their

leadership,” said Capt. Michael Belina, the signals officer for 1st Battalion, 503rd Infantry Regiment. “The common Soldier will have a better idea of what’s going on around him, and it will basically cut out some of the talk that is required to build that picture. It will be more immediate.” The 173rd Airborne Brigade was also the first to receive new electronic warfare, or EW, prototype systems. The new package of EW systems allows Soldiers to electronically protect their formations, detect enemy activity and electronically disrupt adversaries. In February, the 173rd Infantry Brigade Combat Team (Airborne) EW and signal intelligence Soldiers became a Combat Electronic Warfare Intelligence platoon within its Military Intelligence Company. The CEWI teams participated in several exercises throughout the year and went on to field new systems including the Versatile Radio Observation & Direction, VROD Modular Adaptive Transmit, Sabre Fury, and Raven Claw. “These Soldiers are the Army’s first users of dedicated electronic warfare capabilities for brigade and below, and among the most advanced in Army; we are already seeing them build impressive

tactics, techniques and procedures from the ground up as well as task organize to best achieve their commander’s desired end state,” said Col. Marty Hagenston, project manager for EW & Cyber, part of the Program Executive Office for Intelligence, Electronic Warfare and Sensors. The Army’s modernization focus also recognizes the growing importance of air and missile defense. In 2018, U.S. Army Europe announced the activation of a new field artillery brigade headquarters; two Multiple Launch Rocket System battalions; a short-range air defense battalion; and several supporting units. These new units will bring at least 1,500 more Soldiers and their families to Europe by 2020. U.S. Army Europe is uniquely positioned in its 51-country area of responsibility to advance American strategic interests in Europe and Eurasia. The relationships we build during more than 1,000 theater security cooperation events in more than 40 countries each year lead directly to support for multinational contingency operations around the world, strengthen regional partnerships and enhance global security.

First 100 days: New garrison CSM takes care of Soldiers and families by Mary Ann Davis U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz Public Affairs Office From the day he assumed his duties as the top enlisted leader of U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz, Command Sergeant Maj. Brett Waterhouse has been cultivating relationships with units and local communities, while looking for ways to enhance efficiency and take care of the Garrison’s customers — the Soldiers and family members of the Kaiserslautern and Baumholder military communities. Now, more than 100 days later and with a new commander by his side, Waterhouse is busy visiting the Garrison’s 29 sites geographically dispersed across the state of Rheinland-Pfalz (to include Coleman Work Site in Mannheim, Baden Württemberg), learning what needs to be done. The command sergeant major spent a considerable amount of time during his first six weeks meeting and listening to his tenant organization peers to determine their needs and provide them support. “One of my biggest tasks was establishing relationships with local government, community and tenant units’ senior enlisted leaders,” many of whom also arrived in Germany this summer, the sergeant major said. “Our job at the USAG Rheinland-Pfalz is to provide services to the warfighter, and if we can’t provide something, let them know what we can provide. I don’t want the Soldiers and families we support to be separate entities, but a single entity. We are getting there.” Waterhouse knows a lot about warfighter needs, because he served as an M1A1 tank loader with the 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment in Saudi Arabia and Iraq during Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm in the early 90s and as an M1A1 tank platoon, platoon sergeant with the 3rd Infantry Division during Operation Iraqi Freedom I in 2003. Years later, the CSM used what he learned about teamwork there and applied it to the garrison here — listening, observing, correcting and praising the work force when warranted. “Just like many units in the Army, the Garrison is shorthanded. We have a lot of folks doing a lot of work — not just holding down the fort — but doing great things and providing great service to our Soldiers and families,” the CSM said. “In every organization, you’ve got some people who just come to work and some who go above and beyond what is required of them. That’s one thing I like about this garrison, we’ve got a lot of

people who care. They are leading their part of the organization for the benefit of all. They don’t have to do it — they want to do it, because they want to make sure our Army families are well taken care of.” Leading comes naturally to Waterhouse who learned a lot about leadership, teamwork and discipline years before the Army while playing baseball from an early age through high school and leading the percussion section and drumline of the Gainesville High School Marching Band. The latter, earned him a scholarship to Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, where he pursued an architecture degree. But after taking time off from college and working various jobs back home, Waterhouse would march to a different drum — that of the U.S. Army. “Growing up playing baseball and sports where people are relying on you — if you don’t do your job, we all fail. Playing sports and in bands are group efforts, and individuals can either screw it up or make it better for the group as a whole,” the CSM reflected. “So I grew up in that teamwork type of environment. When I did decide to join the Army, I had no idea I would like it that much.” He liked it enough to spend the next 28 years serving in a variety of duty positions to include tank loader, tank gunner, tank commander and platoon sergeant; Recruiter; First Sergeant; Military Science Instructor; Operations Sergeant Major; Stryker Squadron Command Sergeant Major; Cadet Command Brigade Command Sergeant Major; and NCO Oral History Program lead at the U.S. Army Heritage and Education Center — giving 110 percent to every job he’s taken. “When you do a job, do it to the best of your abilities. It’s that simple. It really comes down to everybody doing what they are supposed to do and doing those tasks well, it’s about the team,” Waterhouse explained. “Some people

think if they make a certain rank or position that it’s all about them, but it’s the opposite — as you move up, it’s all about those who will replace you one day.” His passion for individual responsibility, discipline and teamwork came from mentors who took care of him along the way, from his high school band director, the late Martha Starke, “who was a regimented stickler for detail,” to his tank commander, Staff Sergeant Mark Bare in Schweinfurt, Germany, from 19931995, who “was inspiring and had total confidence in me — even when I didn’t have confidence in myself. He motivated his troops to become better tankers by instilling the spirit of competition in us,” the CSM said. Part of being a leader is inspiring your folks to do more than they thought they could, Waterhouse said. But how do you do that? You need to get to know them — their personalities, strengths, weaknesses — what motivates them, what makes them tick. “It’s also about connecting with people,” the CSM advised. “Communication is key to getting to know people and accomplishing missions efficiently and effectively. For leaders, it’s not necessarily what you say, but how you say it. This is especially important when what you have to say is something people don’t want to hear.” He spoke from experience. During the weeks and days leading up to what would become Operation Iraqi Freedom I in 2003, then Sergeant First Class Waterhouse had to motivate his fellow tankers to prepare for his unit’s inevitable border crossing from Kuwait to Iraq. Many members of Waterhouse’s tank platoon were in a state of denial about the impending war in Iraq. His unit had been deployed to Kuwait in September 2002 for a six-month training mission called Operation Desert Spring. Many of the NCOs in the platoon were focused on going home in March 2003 instead

of crossing the Kuwait border and fighting the enemy. This prospect of war and the NCOs’ focus on going home, in turn, affected their Soldiers’ morale and confidence. “I told the NCOs, I need you to be ready. The Army didn’t bring other brigades to Kuwait the last couple of months ( January-March 2003) for the fun of it, to include the other brigades in the 3rd Infantry Division who had already completed their six-month rotation in Kuwait. I told them, we are going to war, and I need your heads in the game. I had to give them a dose of reality and motivate them to be ready to fight.” Waterhouse went on to say, “I talked to the junior Soldiers in the platoon separately, and explained that I knew how they felt, having been in a similar situation in Saudi Arabia in 1990 and on the border of Iraq in 1991. I said to them, ‘You guys have been here in Kuwait for six months, and no one is better trained and ready to kick the enemy’s ass than we are right now. This is why we train. This is our job, and when the bullets start flying, you will all know what to do.’” Days later, Waterhouse’s unit did exactly that and fought their way to Baghdad, taking control of the country’s capital and began settling the area. Several tank commanders showed courage enough to earn several accolades and one received the Silver Star. “They just needed to get their heads in the game — people’s lives were at stake,” he said. “The tough part about being a leader is letting people know the reality of the situation, but also showing them the importance their role plays in the mission.” That dedication to the people and mission is what the CSM brings to the garrison. There was a lot to learn during his first 100 days, but he’s doing it all plus keeping his head on a swivel for unexpected events and relying on experts, tenants and garrison partners to assist when needed. “The first day Colonel Edwards took command, we had an [Unexploded Ordnance] found at Smith Barracks, Baumholder. That was something no one could have predicted, but you handle it when things like that happen,” he said. It also helped to have assistance from outside the gate as well. “The Baumholder mayor offered to house the Soldiers and families in Lager Aulenbach Training Range until the UXO was removed. They offered because of the long-standing relationship that was formed long before I got here. We are a family with these communities — that’s a huge advantage of our partnership that I hope we can continue to build on.”

French military hosts 7th MSC for WWI commemorations by Sgt. 1st Class John Freese 7th Mission Support Command Army Reserve Soldiers from the 7th Mission Support Command got a taste of what a different generation of Soldiers faced 100 years ago, helping mark the centennial of the American Expeditionary Force’s campaigns in France during World War I. The 7th MSC operated a logistics command post for Operation Victory over there near Verdun, France, working with the French military at Base d’Etain. Victory Over There was a series of commemorative events running from Sept. 20-24 conducted jointly by the American Battle Monuments Commission and the U.S. Army Center of Military History. “Our Soldiers visited historic battlefields, learned about their lineage and heard stories of hardship and gallantry in battle,” said Brig. Gen. Fred Maiocco, the 7th MSC commanding general. “Most importantly, they were able to participate in some of the ceremonies honoring the men and women who sacrificed themselves in the cause of liberty and freedom during the Great War.” Responsibilities for the 7th included getting distinguished visitors, ceremony participants, and support personnel into France, as well as coordinating lodging, transportation and force protection during the various events, according to Maj. J.D. Etienne, an operations planner for the 7th. “This was a multi [Army] component, multi-services mission,” he said, of the international effort. The French military played an important part in the success of the command’s mission. “We were honored by many allied and partner nations which participated in these events,” Maiocco said. “In particular, the French were incredibly gracious and supportive. The French Government and its army hosted our Task Force at their regional base near the city of Etain, the site of a former U.S. military base. Task force members and memorial participants were able to gather at the base for onward movement and support for the many events scheduled in the five days of WWI Centennial Commemoration.” The Meuse-Argonne and St. Mihiel offenses in late September of 1918 were a combined U.S. and French effort, and precipitated the end of the war that led to the death of nearly 18 million Soldiers and civilians from all countries involved. The campaigns were meant to put a final end to such international

Brig. Gen. Frederick R. Maiocco Jr., commander of the U.S. Army Reserve’s 7th Mission Support Command, joined his Soldiers, reenactors and dignitaries from France and the U.S. in honoring the U.S. Army’s 16th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division’s historical crossing of the bridge at the village of Nonsard, France, during the WWI Centennial Celebration, Sept. 2.

aggressions, and prior to World War II, the war held the moniker of “The War to End All Wars.” American Battle Monuments Commission and CMH commemorative events supported by the 7th MSC included ceremonies at the St. Mihiel and Meuse-Argonne American military cemeteries and a symbolic walk that approximated American force movements from the famous Hill 304 to the towering monument at Montfaucon. There also were a series of educational tours hosted by military historians from CMH that focused on key events of the AEF’s mission in France. These included the Sergeant York Trail, a tour of the Lost Battalion battle site and tours that traced the historical axes of advance and significant events of leading U.S. Army units in the war, I Corps, III Corps and V Corps, all under the command of General John J. Pershing. On the symbolic walk, the weather echoed the conditions likely seen by Soldiers of the campaigns and so common to September in that part of France. But the strong winds and rain barely slowed the hundreds of military and civilian marchers, both American and French. The people of the French countryside and towns emerged in the weather to greet and provide refreshments to the marchers and gather at their side at one of the walk’s periodic stops. Historians on the walk provided accounts of key moments in the U.S. offensive into German-held terrain and drew attention to dilapidated machine gun nests, hilltop firing points, artillery dimpled fields and

marshy bogs through which advancing American and French Soldiers prevailed against German mortar and machine gun fire. At the U.S. Military Cemetery at St. Mihiel, on Sept. 22, distinguished military visitors, French and American descendants of WWI Soldiers, as well as hundreds of interested French civilians flocked to this beautifully maintained countryside cemetery to memorialize the more than 4000 American “Doughboys” laid to rest, and to pay tribute to the long-lived alliance between America and its oldest ally. Supreme Allied Commander Europe, Gen. Curtis M. Scaparrotti spoke to the historic partnership between France and the United States, stretching back to the days of the American Colonies. Nearly 140 years later, America rushed troops to the European theater for its first-ever large overseas campaign. “The French and British provided arms, ammunition and aircraft for the Americans to train and fight with,” he said in his speech. “During these days the bonds and friendships forged between our nations over a century prior grew even stronger.” At Meuse-Argonne cemetery on Sept. 23, hundreds of interested spectators, French and American Soldiers in formations, as well as civilian and military volunteers braved more strong winds and rain to place and light candles at each of more than 14,000 graves. Because of the weather, they had to replace and relight hundreds knocked to the ground by the wind. The U.S. Navy band was forced under the shelter of the chapel’s atrium wing.

There, mixed tightly with members of the public and French and American news media, the band played on as the main portions of the ceremony were pushed into the cemetery’s tiny chapel. The ceremony caused the only pause in the day-long procession of eager French and American volunteers who, from the chapel’s doorway, faced the descending columns and rows of immaculately trimmed graves and read the names of each of the fallen 14.000 American Soldiers there. Centered between immense, high resolution television screens that displayed an hours-long rotation of hundreds of photographs cataloging the war, the name readings continued until dusk. For Soldiers of the Army Reserve’s 7th MSC, the historic events paid tribute to the many U.S. Army Reserve units that continue today upon the legacy of the more than 80,000 reserve Soldiers, then called the National Army, who were called to serve in 1917. They further represented 26 percent of all American casualties during the final offenses. “Over 13,000 killed in action, over 52,000 wounded,” Etienne said. During those final months of the war, reserve Soldiers helped tip the balance of the war in favor of the allies, he said. The impact from participation in these events for 7th Soldiers was personal. “It was an amazing experience, having the opportunity to work side by side with the French military, local police and the French people,” said, Sgt. 1st Class Jose Serrano, a senior logistics non-commissioned officer at the 7th. “They truly embraced us, and greatly helped our logistical efforts there,” he said. When the candles had fallen to the ground at the Meuse-Argonne cemetery, Serrano was one of the volunteers who promptly commenced to replace them. “Just like that, in the blink of an eye, all of those burning candles were out,” he said. Amidst the graves of so many U.S. Soldiers it was difficult to restrain an emotional reflection on war. “Someone can be here one moment and gone in the next,” he said. At the placement and lighting of each candle at Meuse-Argonne, the many volunteers, from where ever they came, read the name, rank and unit marked on every one of the 14,000 graves.

Stories and photos by Thomas Warner contributing writer Phoebe Shin completed the fall golf season by winning the DODEA Europeans golf tournament last week at Wiesbaden’s Rheinblick course. Shin’s top performance with 90 Points was followed by other Ramsteiners in second and third places to give the Lady Royals the team title, as well. Shin, Lauren Sutherland, and Harley Parks made up a strong Lady Royals contingent and Shin, a senior who hopes to pursue a medical career, was the leader after the first day of the tourney. It was the 10th time in e org Ge S's the past 12 seasons that KH ve Kennedy, (from left) Coach Ste ed h lud ca inc Mi ros n, Eu yto 18 Ramstein has won the Pa , Chandler Golfers at the 20 S's Christian Angeles RH ve n, rri Ste Pe h ac ias Co th , girls’ links Europeans. y Parks Stephan and Ma n Sutherland, Harle , Eli Rothas, Laure Ramstein Royals the “I’m not sure any team by d tte mi sub Webb, Ben Todman oto Shin. than we did at this year’s Euros,” said Ramstein coach Steve Kennedy. “We had so many to qualify and the girls performed well, as did our boys.” Shin said having played the course in previous seasons gave her an edge when it came time for 2018 Euros but she benefitted even more from playing against a solid teammate like Sutherland. “We’ve played together three seasons now and it’s a blessing,” said Shin. “Lauren really competes and we’ve gone back and forth winning and scoring ahead of each other. We want Harley to stay with it and maybe some new players because it’s a sport where more girls need to come out.” Ben Todman was the top Ramstein male golf-

er, taking third place overall behind winner Bryan Cortese of Wiesbaden and runner-up George Stephan of Kaiserslautern. Cortese totaled 90 points with the Stableford scoring system used at Euros while Stephan had 63 and Todman had 60. Just like the girls, Ramstein’s boys’ program is a mighty force on the DODEA circuit. This year’s title marks the 10th Royals boys’ title in the past 14 seasons. “This is a happy time for (assistant) coach Steve Brewster and for me, too, but it’s all about the kids because they paid their dues by being at the practices,” Kennedy said. “James Stewart is another new person who helped us coach the kids and they responded with a great tournament.”

Kaiserslautern, Ramstein split tennis wins Tendencies held true when rivals Kaiserslautern and Ramstein met on the tennis courts last week. The KHS girls kept their hot streak going by dispatching Ramstein, but the Royal boys kept their big season alive by topping the Raiders. All four squads are in the midst of highlight-filled 2018 campaigns and there were big performances across both genders on a day where sportsmanship and friendships were held on high pedestals. “Lots of these kids know each other, play together, enjoy each other’s company,” said Kaiserslautern cocoach David Quinn. “It doesn’t cause a problem when it’s Ramstein against Kaiserslautern. You get to see some great competition.” The most competitive matches came in doubles, and both were won by Kaiserslautern. Aiva Schmitz and Giulia Sanchez needed a tiebreak to outlast the Ramstein pair of Ashlyn O’Connor and Isabella Guzaldo 9-8 (7-3). Ramstein had stormed back from being down by four games in that pro set match. On the far end of the new KHS courts, the Raider pairing of Olaitan Powdar and William Alsing secured

a victory over Conner Markus and Collin Kent 6-4, 4-6, 10-7. The last tiebreak set was back and forth, drawing much of the on-hand crowd down to watch through the fencing. “These two schools are really wellrepresented in tennis this year and some of these players will see each other again at Europeans next week,” said RHS co-coach Katina Campbell. Kaiserslautern’s girls won thanks to singles wins by Schmitz, Victoria Lopez, Taylor Larned, and Shatavia McBride. Ramstein’s singles wins came from Delany Terry and Gabriela Ramirez. In doubles, KHS had a win by Larned/Lopez and Ramstein had Ramirez/McBride taking a point. On the boys’ side, Ramstein got doubles wins from Jordan Liebig/Aiden Pinkham and Conner Sankey/Collin Ritter. Mark Butler won at the No. 1 singles spot for KHS but Ramstein took everything else. Markus, Kent, Sankey, Ritter, and Pinkham each recorded singles wins over their Raider foes. Ramstein joins Alconberry this weekend in a three-team event at Lakenheath. Kaiserslautern will travel to meet Wiesbaden. The Europeans tourney is set for Oct. 25-27, also at Wiesbaden.

CROSS COUNTRY Kaiserslautern boys win Stuttgart meet Placing four runners among the top eight finishers gave Kaiserslautern the push it needed to win last week’s cross country meet at Stuttgart. The Raiders had the low total with 29 points, outdoing Stuttgart, Black Forest Academy, and Hohenfels. Stuttgart won the girls’ team title with 23 points, followed by Black Forest, Kaiserslautern, and Hohenfels. Stuttgart had six of its runners to wind up in the top 10 standings to carry the day. TOP AREA FINISHERS Boys 1. Mac Roberts, BFA (17:43) 2. Joseph Purvis, KHS (17:48) 3. Orlando Rojas, KHS (17:52) 5. Yadiel Rojas, KHS (18:12) 8. Ethan Cooper, KHS (18:29) 11. Ramstein boys first, girls second At another meet last weekend, Ramstein’s boys took first place with the low total of 17 points to easily outdistance second-place Baumholder, Wiesbaden, Brussels, and SHAPE. The Ramstein girls’ runners were just edged out

Ramstein got another score on a short blast by quarterback Jakob Steinbeck. Hollenbeck also praised the defensive play of defensive back Jason Jones Jr, the 10-tackle night by Holland, the fierce hitting by Kyle Lloyd. Ramstein travels to Vogelweh on Saturday to meet rival Kaiserslautern. The Royals seem to have the top seed locked up for the upcoming postseason playoffs, but the other three semifinalists are not yet ordered.

Ramstein and Wiesbaden played in front of a big Friday night crowd.

by Wiesbaden, with SHAPE third, Brussels fourth, and Baumholder fifth. Ramstein will take its girls’ and boys’ squads to a meet this weekend at Baumholder while Kaiserslautern will be running at a meet in Wiesbaden. All DODEA schools get together at Europeans meet Oct. 26 on the Rolling Hills course at Baumholder.

VOLLEYBALL Ramstein posts wins over SHAPE, Spangdahlem Paige Nielson and Izzy Coddington combined for 18 service aces to spur Ramstein to a pair of recent volleyball wins. The Lady Royals are now 8-0 on the season and can wrap up at least a share of the Division I DODEA regular season crown this weekend. Nielson contributed three kills in a 25-9, 25-8, 25-13 triumph over Spangdahlem. Masaya Archbold had five kills and two solo blocks in that

same match, to go with six kills and two more solo blocks against SHAPE. Ramstein will be joined by Kaiserslautern (2-6) in matches both this weekend and next. The Lady Royals and Lady Raiders will be at SHAPE this weekend for a three-team rotating event and they will do the same next week with RHS and Black Forest coming to Kaiserslautern. Baumholder, KHS both fall twice Baumholder was unable to score any game wins against Black Forest recently. The BFA team won match one by a 25-19, 25-11, 25-21 count. Black Forest won match two by scores of 25-19, 25-13, 25-17. The Lady Buccaneers and Brussels will both travel to Spangdahlem this weekend for a three-team event. Kaiserslautern also fell twice in matches with Stuttgart and Vilseck. The loss to the Lady Panthers unfolded with scores

of 25-13, 25-14, 25-18. That match was somewhat similar to KHS’s loss to Vilseck, which ended up 25-12, 25-15, 25-15.

FOOTBALL Ramstein finds its way past Wiesbaden Ramstein (5-0) played in front a large Friday Night Lights crowd at Wiesbaden and had its mettle tested before leaving with a 28-14 win. Bailey Holland and Dominique Arizpe both rushed for over 100 yards and had three of the team’s touchdowns in a game that was locked 7-7 at halftime. “Wiesbaden had a great gameplan and came out strong,” said RHS coach Carter Hollenbeck. “A key sequence for us was when we kicked off to open the second half, then held them to a punt. After that, we drove the ball and both Dom and Bailey were able to run it well.” Naser Eaves had a big kick return to set up a score and

Stuttgart 35, Kaiserslautern 18 Kaiserslautern (2-3) missed a golden opportunity to nail down a DODEA playoff berth after leading 18-0 but losing the advantage. A postseason berth is still possible regardless of whether the Raiders win or lose Saturday against Ramstein. Just like earlier, when KHS opened a big lead against Lakenheath, it was a late firsthalf drive by Stuttgart that stole the momentum. Alec Kenfield threw three touchdown passes to Sabriel Ashley and the defending DODEA champs made sure they would have something to play for this weekend. All-Europe designate Corey Coombs ran to daylight again for Kaiserslautern, with 36 totes for over 200 ground yards. He and the rest of the Raider charges were pressed by coaches this week to put the Stuttgart game behind them and plan for Ramstein’s visit. Vilseck and Wiesbaden are all but eliminated from the postseason race and the outcome of the rivalry game Saturday might affect the final seeding process.

One of the organizations that does an amazing job at welcoming new members to the community is the United Service Organizations. The USO is the result of a joint services agency that was started in 1941 from the YMCA, YWCA, Salvation Army, Jewish Welfare Board, Catholic Community Charities, and Travelers Aid Society in response to President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s call to provide morale and recreational services to troops who were on the verge of war. As part of their mission, the USO has “Discover” programs that help you get integrated into the community. We have listed some information below that can help you feel more comfortable in your new duty station.
