Creek Defender cadre from the 435th Air Ground Operations Wing, operating out of Baumholder, began to ready 98 security forces members at the U.S. Air Forces in Europe and Air Forces Africa’s only Ground Combat Readiness Training Center, before deploying throughout the world. Cadres are tasked with ensuring all security forces members are capable of performing 24 core security forces tasks, ranging from nighttime operations, ﬁre control measures and urban operations. Fisher House aids DOD in paying death benefits by Jim Garamone American Forces Press Service WASHINGTON — The Fisher House Foundation has stepped in to aid the Defense Department so families of fallen service members can receive the full set of benefits they have been promised, Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel said here today. The Fisher House Foundation and DOD entered an agreement that includes the $100,000 death gratuity payment. “I am offended, outraged and embarrassed that the government shutdown had prevented the Department of Defense from fulfilling this most sacred responsibility in a timely manner,” Hagel said in a written statement. In the weeks before the shutdown, defense officials had warned Congress that the ability to pay death benefits to grieving families would run out when the appropriations lapsed. “The Department of Defense informed Congress that the department would be legally unable to pay death benefits were there to be a lapse in DOD appropriations,” White House press secretary Jay Carney said during his daily briefing today. The issue was not explicitly addressed as part of the Pay Our Military Act. “The president was very disturbed to learn of this problem, and he directed the Department of Defense to work with the Office of Management and Budget and his lawyers to develop a possible solution and he expects this ... to be fixed today,” Carney said. Since the shutdown began Oct. 1, DOD budget officials looked at options to continue these benefits, Hagel said. “Even under the Pay Our Military Act, we found that we lacked the necessary authority to make payments to the families directly,” the secretary said. The Fisher House Foundation offered to make payments to these families from its own funds, and OMB officials determined DOD can enter into a contract with the Fisher House Foundation to provide these benefits. “The Fisher House Foundation will provide the families of the fallen with the benefits they so richly deserve,” Hagel said. “After the shutdown ends, DOD will reimburse the Fisher House for the costs it has incurred.” The Fisher House Foundation is best known for the houses built on the grounds of major military and VA medical centers nationwide and in Europe. Families of wounded or hospitalized service members stay at the houses as their loved ones undergo hospitalization for a combat injury, illness or disease. A total of 26 service members have died since Oct. 1, including five killed in combat in Afghanistan. The $100,000 death gratuity comes from appropriated funds, and DOD could not obligate funds once the fiscal year 2013 appropriation ran out. The department also cannot pay the benefit that provides 12 months of basic allowance for housing, as that money also comes via appropriated funds. “The department has no higher priority than taking care of our service members and their families,” Hagel said. “Congress has responsibilities as well, and it has abdicated them. “Along with the rest of the department’s leaders,” he continued, “I will continue to work every day to address the very real impact that the government shutdown is having on our people, and I once again call on Congress to fulfill its basic responsibilities and restore funding for the federal government.”

Family Advocacy observes Domestic Violence Awareness Month by Carmen Schott Family Advocacy outreach manager October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, and the Air Force and Army Family Advocacy programs are sponsoring a variety of events to help educate the community about intimate partner violence. There will be a variety of information tables available with free resources, self-defense seminars, AFN radio spots and outreach initiatives during October. Family Advocacy’s goal is to prevent domestic violence within the military and create healthier relationships in the KMC. There are a variety of resources available to military members, dependents and civilians. Ramstein Family Advocacy offers a consultation service, which is a onetime educational session to help offer resources and support as well as referrals to appropriate agencies on base. The consultation service is a great resource for individuals and couples because it provides immediate support

and resources. It is a great way for victims of domestic violence to seek help and find support. Many victims of domestic violence might be afraid to come forward for fear of hurting their career or the career of their intimate partner. The Air Force has restricted reporting available to service members and it is available for individuals to seek help from an unhealthy, violent relationship. There is no command involvement and family advocacy will offer counseling and support as long as the client feels it is needed. The information given to family advocacy is kept confidential, which enables clients to feel safe when discussing relationship concerns. Domestic violence is not always visible and obvious. Sometimes the abusive behavior manifests as controlling behaviors such as restraining, blocking a partner from leaving the house, limiting access to finances and threatening to take children away. It is important to reach out and get help if your relationship or mar-

FDA warns against dietary supplement by Larine Barr Air Force Surgeon General Public Affairs FALLS CHURCH, Va. — The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is advising consumers to stop using OxyElite Pro, a dietary supplement, because of suspected links to acute hepatitis. The FDA, along with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Hawaii Department of Health are investigating reports of acute non-viral hepatitis in Hawaii where 29 cases are linked to a dietary supplement. The FDA urges consumers to stop using the product while the investigation continues. Distributed by USPlabs LLC in Dallas, Texas, the product is sold nationwide in retail stores and on the Internet. “We are urging Airmen to stop using the product until the investigation concludes and results are confirmed,” said Col. John Oh, the chief of Health Promotion, Air Force Medical Support Agency, Air Force Surgeon General. There have been a total of 29 cases of acute non-viral hepatitis with an unknown

cause reported in Hawaii. Eleven of the 29 patients have been hospitalized with acute hepatitis, two have received liver transplants and one person has died. The CDC is also investigating other cases of liver injury nation-wide that could be related. Symptoms of hepatitis include fever, fatigue, loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, dark urine, clay or gray-colored bowel movements, joint pain, yellow eyes, and jaundice. “Airmen who are experi-

Translating everyday issues, c’est la vie by Airman 1st Class Jordan Castelan 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs To alleviate language barriers while deployed, the Air Force relies on translators. These barriers quickly become obvious while supporting and acting in conjunction with allied partners and civilians one might encounter in a foreign country. Translators play an important role in getting through language barriers while supporting allied operations. Senior Airman Julie Bersinger, 86th Medical Operations Squadron medical technician, was presented with an opportunity many don’t encounter: the opportunity to work outside her normal job and be a translator in Africa. “I fell into a lucky situation,” Bersinger said. “I have an opportunity

to use my skills in French to enable people from the base to fully and successfully communicate with the local

community on my upcoming deployment.” Bersinger is tasked with supporting U.S. Air Forces in Europe and Air Forces Africa’s mission with the use of her talent: speaking another language. In her role, Bersinger needs to be fully available at a moment’s notice to help and assist in anyway possible. “I’m here to alleviate language barriers on and off base, but I’m still a trained medical technician,” Bersinger said. “My priority is of course to accomplish my mission of translating, helping build foreign relations and reinforcing international bonds, however, if a situation arises where my medical training can contribute to the mission, then there shouldn’t be a reason for me not to.” Ramstein’s pediatrics office expects her to perform to her fullest as a trans-

lator. However they will miss having her spark in the office while she is deployed. “The pediatrics office will definitely miss having her around,” said Tech. Sgt. Mariah Pike, 86th Airlift Wing self-aid and buddy care adviser and Bersinger's supervisor. “We are fully confident in what we believe she will accomplish while gone, and we are sure she will represent not only the 86th MDOS but Ramstein fantastically while deployed.” There are quite a few standards Bersinger’s leaders expect her to meet, but she is ready to accept the challenge ahead, Pike said. “I am looking forward to working as a translator and using my skills as a medical technician in another location to further the Air Force’s global impact and foster foreign and allied relations,” Bersinger said.

Congress passes bill reopening federal government by Jim Garamone American Forces Press Service WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama signed legislation late Wednesday bringing federal employees back to work after Congress finally resolved the budget logjam that led to a 16-day shutdown. Senate leaders championed bipartisan legislation to reopen the government and remove the threat of government default on its debts. All federal government employees — including some 4,000 Defense Department employees — will report to work Friday. The legislation is a continuing resolution that will provide federal government spending at fiscal year

2013 levels. This keeps the sequester-level budget in effect. The act will keep the government open through Jan. 15 and raises the debt limit through Feb. 7. The act contains a provision for a joint Senate-House committee to work on a budget recommendation for fiscal year 2014. Those recommendations are due Dec. 13. The legislation includes the provision to pay all furloughed employees for the period of the lapse in appropriations. The act calls for those employees to be paid “as soon as practicable.” Even before the House of Representatives voted, Obama signaled his intent to sign the bill. “We’ll begin reopening our government immedi-

ately,” he said in a White House appearance. “And we can begin to lift this cloud of uncertainty and unease from our businesses and from the American people.” Obama asked that all political officials take the lesson of the gridlock to heart and work together to solve the nation’s problems. “My hope and expectation is,” Obama said, “everybody has learned that there is no reason why we can’t work on the issues at hand, why we can’t disagree between the parties while still being agreeable, and make sure that we’re not inflicting harm on the American people when we do have disagreements.” For more information, go to the OPM Web page at www.opm.gov.

Q: What is your overall job as a loadmaster? A: Generally speaking, as a loadmaster, we are in charge of anything and everything in the back of a cargo aircraft, whether it is patients, passengers, supplies or vehicles. We inspect the cargo pallets before and after a flight. Another big responsibility is air delivery, basically anything you can fit in a plane, we can deliver it. Q: What are your day-today operations at Ramstein Air Base? A: Everything varies, unlike when I was stationed somewhere else where their main focus was training. Here, we are constantly conducting operational missions. One day I could be required to be in Poland and the next

A: No, actually I feel like I am at a huge advantage because I get to actually see first-hand the end result of what I do and the importance of it. For example, when the earthquake hit Turkey a few years ago, the United States sent blankets and food and I was able to deliver it. When we arrived, a Turkish guy came in with a forklift to receive the supplies, and when he finished he got out and gave me a hug. If I was somewhere else, I might have loaded a plane that would eventually get there, but that’s a little different from actually being there. Nothing can compare to the experience here. I see the full spectrum of my job. Q: What would you say to a new loadmaster who hasn’t had the opportunity to fully experience the impact of their work? A: Just wait and see. Right now, you are training for what you will be able to experience later. Take your time, learn your job and once your time comes, you won’t regret it.

Q: Did you originally want to be a loadmaster? A: Before joining the Air Force I knew I wanted to fly, so I did my research on anything related to flying. I

would have taken any flying position but I felt being a loadmaster was the right job for me because I get to actually go to the places and see the impact of the work I am doing. Q: Flying as much as you do, where all have you been? A: In approximately two years as a loadmaster, I have been to around 34 countries, and that’s pretty standard in my career field. Basically, our area of responsibility is Europe, all of Africa and parts of western Asia, and I have buddies who have traveled a lot more than I have. Q: What is the most challenging part of your job? A: The most challenging part of being a loadmaster, and I think everyone has felt this way at least once, is we are expected from Day One to be able to operate on an individ-

ual basis without supervision in just about any environment. You arrive to your first base after a year of schooling and you get a few training flights in, but once you complete maybe three or four flights, you are able to be put on a jet alone. For example, if you were sent to Bulgaria where you deal with people who don’t speak English, things could get complicated. Q: Is there anything else you would like to add? A: Every time I have the opportunity to speak with someone who is not in my career field (but) who has shown interest to be, whether already in the Air Force or not, I always tell them to go for it whenever they get the chance. Nothing can compare to the experience one can receive as a loadmaster. Depending on the plane you are assigned, you can fly around the entire world in just one trip. It’s just so amazing.

KMC flu vaccinations • The 86th Medical Group will offer seasonal influenza vaccines to active duty, dependents (ages 5 and up) and eligible civilians from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday at the Kaiserslautern Military Community Center. ERDC improves readiness, wellness

he Europe Regional Dental Command is raising the bar for U.S. Army Europe Soldier wellness and readiness by providing prevention-focused dental care designed to achieve the highest dental readiness rating while using fewer appointments. U.S. Army Dental Command and the ERDC are introducing the Go First Class program for USAREUR Soldiers in the KMC. The Go First Class initiative shifts the focus to the highest level of oral wellness — Category 1 — and does so more efficiently by bringing routine oral care procedures including exams, cleanings, tooth varnishing, and simple fillings into a single appointment. “Go First Class is centered on dental wellness, directly supporting the (Army) surgeon general’s goal of transforming from a healthcare system to a system for health,” said Col. Michael Doran, ERDC commander. By addressing issues such as prevention, wellness, and readiness, Go First Class aligns direct-

ly with the Army Medicine 2020 campaign. Soldiers will need fewer dental visits which will translate into more time with their units in the KMC. Bundled appointment services combined with scheduled appointments, enable dental teams to treat more patients and increase overall satisfaction for every patient that visits dental facilities in the KMC. Dental facilities within the Landstuhl Dental Activity footprint are Baumholder, Kleber, Pulaski, Landstuhl, and Wiesbaden dental clinics. Other dental facilities participating in the program are Livorno, Vicenza, NATO, SHAPE and Stuttgart’s Patch Barracks dental clinics. “The Go First Class initiative along with new information systems we have implemented put clinics in the Europe Regional Dental Command on the cutting edge of the latest dental technologies, promoting a robust Military Health System focused on the wellness of our Soldiers,” Doran said. The fiveday course teaches security forces Airmen a variety of skills including verbal judo, airfield surveying, cross-culture awareness and combative techniques. The trainees were also taught weapons retention and take away, where they learned how to properly disarm someone who has a knife, baton, pistol or AK-47 assault rifle. Airmen from throughout U.S. Air Forces in Europe and Air Forces Africa come to Pulaski Barracks to prepare themselves for hostile situations no matter where they go.

Frikadellen (German pan-fried meat patties) INGREDIENTS: 1 cup chopped onion 1 teaspoon oil 1 bread roll softened in hot milk or water and squeezed dry (or you may use bread crumbs) 1 pound ground meat (can be half beef/ half pork) 1 egg 1 teaspoon salt ¼ teaspoon fresh ground pepper 3 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley OR 1 tablespoon dried parsley 1 tablespoon butter 1 tablespoon olive oil DIRECTIONS: • Pre-heat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit (176 degrees Celsius) • Place chopped onion in a small bowl, drizzle with 1 teaspoon oil, cover with plastic wrap and microwave on high 2-3 minutes, or until translucent. Cool slightly. • Break softened roll (or bread crumbs)

into little pieces in a bowl, add meat, the rest of the ingredients and the cooked onion; mix well. Shape into 4 equal size meat patties. • Heat butter and olive oil together in a frying pan, place patties in pan over medium high heat until browned on both sides. Children were able to take tours of the Vogelweh Fire Station and different fire trucks and see what firefighters do daily. AGE charged with ground equipment upkeep Story and photo by Senior Airman Aaron-Forrest Wainwright 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs The 86th Maintenance Squadron Aerospace Ground Equipment flight maintains all equipment on the flightline. If it deals with generators powering idle aircraft or heaters and air conditioners, chances are these Airmen are behind it. “Without the AGE flight, you can’t run a flightline,” said Airman 1st Class Joshua Bringold, 86th Maintenance Squadron AGE technician. “We support any aircraft that comes through here by performing maintenance so they can continue their mission.” The AGE flight Airmen prepare any and all ground equipment on the flightline. Members of the AGE flight ensure the support of contingency operations in Europe and Africa. “It’s amazing how well these Airmen here get the job done,” said Master Sgt. Coelette Roe, 86th Maintenance Squadron AGE assistant chief. “We are almost always involved in all maintenance going on around the flightline.” The AGE flight is able to support a variety of equipment used by maintainers to assist the combat mission around the world at a moment’s notice. “We work on generators, diesel engines, jet engines, electrical equipment, hydraulic systems and air-conditioning systems,” Bringold said. “In extreme cases, we perform maintenance in different facilities around base.”

wounded warriors returning from combat, by maintaining all equipment on the ﬂightline and ensuring it’s the best available,” Roe said. “Being able to see the Airmen here happy and excited about getting the mission done is rewarding in and of itself.”

New deicing facility to improve base mission capabilities Story and photo by Airman 1st Class Jordan Castelan 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Ramstein aircraft deicing operators will soon have enhanced capabilities when servicing aircraft this winter with the installation of a more efficiently designed deicing chemical refueling facility. The new facility, set to be operating next month, will increase fluid storage capacity, operator safety and the ability for deicing vehicles to turn around. It will also lower vehicle congestion and reduce the risk of environmental damage. “This facility alleviates load time and no longer requires Airmen climbing on top of a deicer to refuel during hazardous winter conditions,” said Master Sgt. Michael Bagley, 721st Aircraft Maintenance Squadron aircraft support flight supervisor. Airmen safety was a priority dur-

ing the design of the new facility. Procedures to produce the correct mixtures of chemicals as well as environmental concerns caused by spills and overfill will be improved by the facility. “New pumps feature an automated mixture system to ensure the correct amount of chemicals are combined and pumped into the vehicles,” Bagley said. “The pumps also have features that prevent major spills and overflows when refilling a deicing vehicle’s tank.” Adapters required to previously fill vehicles are now eliminated. In addition, turnaround times of vehicles will be enhanced with the newly designed drive-thru system for operators. “With the removal of the old system that required a fire hydrant and adapters to refuel a tank, operators can more effectively and safely complete their mission,” said Master Sgt. How heat works in the KMC How does heat work on base? District heat produces hot water and distributes it to base buildings to provide heat through radiators. During the summer months, so little heat is needed that most of the system is deactivated. Once the temperatures drop to 55 degrees Fahrenheit for ﬁve consecutive days and forecasts indicate the average temperature for the next ﬁve days will stabilize below 55 F, the heat is reactivated. This is based on a review of the weather data for the past seven years. Within the KMC, the heating season is typically October through May.

What do I do if the heat is not currently activated? Conserve the heat you have already. Close the windows and window coverings at night to reduce heat loss. Keep

the doors to seldom used rooms closed to keep heat in the rooms you use most. Take advantage of natural heating. Open drapes and rollladens during the day so the sun can warm the inside of the room. If it is warmer outside than inside, open the windows to allow the warm outside air into the room. Close the windows in the evening when the outside temperatures begin to drop. Once the heat is activated, how do I set the temperature? Your radiator control will look similar to the one pictured below. These controls are very different from the thermostats we see in the states. This radiator control is both the thermostat and the valve that controls the amount of hot water ﬂowing through the radiator. For the control to work properly, it must be surrounded by free circulat-

ing air. Do not cover it with clothes, curtains or furniture. Remember, radiators do not provide instant heat. Hot water must pass through the radiator and the heat from the radiator is transferred to the room. Set the thermostat and allow time for the temperature of the room to come up before making any more adjustments. Radiators are usually located below windows, which is normally the coldest part of the room. A setting of “2” or “3” should provide comfortable heat for the entire room. Often, radiators are being constantly adjusted and then windows are opened when it gets too hot. This is a huge waste of energy and money. Last year, the KMC’s heating bill alone was nearly $30 million. By following these simple steps, you will ensure the comfort of your home and workplace,

while saving energy and helping to lower the bill. What if your radiator isn’t working right? The thermostat and radiator combination is a simple and reliable system with few moving parts to malfunction. However, if the control valve malfunctions there will be either no heat or too much heat. Occasionally, air is trapped inside the radiator and needs to be removed. Indications that air is trapped inside are knocking or gurgling noises or the radiator only feels hot to the touch on one half. Ramstein readies for Pride Day, cleanup by 2nd Lts. Michael Peterson and Timothy Lorson 786th Civil Engineer Squadron Greetings, Team Ramstein! It’s that time again. The weather is starting to cool down and the leaves are beginning to fall. Accordingly, the base and housing clean-ups are scheduled for Monday and Tuesday. Monday will be “clean where you work” with the implementation of the 86th Airlift Wing Base Pride Program, and Tuesday will be an opportunity for housing residents to take some time to focus on cleaning around base housing. The following details provide instructions on how folks can come out and participate. It will be a great opportunity to improve the areas where we live, work and play.

Base Pride Day/Monday

In order to help designate specific areas of responsibilities, each group and tenant unit of the 86 AW has been provided an AOR map and Base Pride checklist. These maps have been distributed to unit leadership and will help guide everyone’s efforts Monday when folks gather to “clean where you work.”

Housing Clean-up/Tuesday

Beginning at 9 a.m. Tuesday, all housing residents will meet at one of the locations below (depending on where you live). Each location will have a Facilities Excellence Team member present who will provide work assignments, equipment, and offer assistance. Residents are asked to bring work gloves, rakes, brooms and tools for removing grass and weeds from sidewalk cracks. Family member participation is encouraged. This is an excellent opportunity to get to know your neighbors and give a helping hand in improving your housing and living areas.

• Parents are highly encouraged to ensure their children wear appropriate reflective clothing as they partake in the evening’s festivities. AF civilian retiree ID card to be replaced by Debbie Gildea Air Force Personnel Center Public Affairs JOINT BASE SAN ANTONIO-RANDOLPH, Texas — Retired Air Force civilians who use the Air Force Form 354, “Civilian Identification Card,” to access USAF installations have until early 2014 — when the AF354 will be rescinded — to get a Department of Defense Civilian Retiree ID Card or other access credentials, Air Force Personnel Center officials said. The AF354 was a card-stock product that allowed civilian retirees and their eligible dependents to enter an Air Force installation, with installation commander approval, but only for access to limited Morale, Welfare and Recreation facilities (access which also applies to current Air Force employees and their dependents). The card was not issued from the Defense Enrollment Eligibility Reporting System/Real-time

Automated Personnel Identification System, and is not recognized by the Department of Defense under the Personnel Identity Protection Program for DEERS or by other services for installation access, said Ed Yoder, Air Force DEERS/RAPIDS project office. “The card doesn’t meet the stringent security requirements established by the Department of Homeland Security,” Yoder said. “Installation access requires a secure card with identity vetting and online capabilities, such as bar code scanning.” Although retired civilians can get a DOD identification card, there isn’t an equivalent for eligible dependents. “On installations where the commander has approved civilian retiree and dependent access, they can contact the civilian personnel office as a starting point for determining eligibility and for getting a secure access card for their family

members,” Yoder said. Many bases use Defense Biometric Identification System cards for all installation access. With a commander approval letter from the force support squadron and a DBIDS card, retired Air Force civilian employees and their dependents will be able to access an installation. “Like the 354, the DBIDS card and letter will only be good for the one installation — you won’t be able to use it to get on other Air Force or DOD installations,” Yoder said. Once the AF354 is officially rescinded — tentatively slated for January — installation security will confiscate AF354 cards presented for access, so civilians should not wait to replace their access cards, he said. The event is sponsored by both the Army and Air Force communities and held annually for all military retirees and their families. “Retiree Appreciation Day is designed to give them a little thank you,” said Luis de Andrade, president of the KMC Retiree Counsel. “It’s also a way to provide retirees with the most current information on issues that are near to their heart, such as TRICARE and Veterans Affairs. Those are big ones. We’re all here to reach out to them and ensure they are aware of the latest updates and benefits available.” De Andrade retired from the Air Force in 1997 and now works as a Department of the Army civilian. He recommends retirees also bring their spouses with them to ensure they are able to properly handle all of their personal affairs after their death. Representatives from legal,

TRICARE, pharmacy, IAC and identification card offices, customs, mortuary affairs, casualty assistance and the U.S. Army Europe retiree council are scheduled to provide briefings. Information tables will be set up from the U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz retirement services affairs office, Air Force retiree affairs office, 86th Medical Group, Army Community Service, Army Substance Abuse Program, VA, Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Red Cross, Defense Commissary Agency, USO, Service Credit Union, education center and the KMC Retiree Council. by Terri Moon Cronk American Forces Press Service WASHINGTON — It’s never too soon to start saving for retirement, Barbara Thompson, the director of the Defense Department’s office of family policy/children and youth advised service members today. Enlistees as young as 18 might not be thinking about saving for retirement or the importance of their Thrift Savings Plan, but that’s when they should, because retirement creeps up quickly, Thompson said. “The vast majority of service members don’t go the full 20 years for military retirement, so they need to, from the very beginning, think about their futures,” she said. “When (service members) get out of the military, they will have something to show in a retirement plan they’ve had all along while serving.” Sometimes “you have to start small, because that’s what you can afford, but the goal is to build up, so you’re saving more

and more every year,” Thompson said. The Thrift Savings Plan, Thompson said, offers two types of approaches: one that is tax-deferred until age 59-and-a-half when taxes on that money will be paid; and the Roth Thrift Savings Plan, in which taxes are paid up front. “It’s an individual decision based on (service members’) circumstances, and I would highly suggest they utilize the financial resources that DOD provides,” Thompson said. Saving for retirement is not only about financial readiness, it’s also critical for service members’ financial well-being, she said. And DOD offers numerous resources to help with retirement account guidance, Thompson said. Military OneSource has financial counselors who are available by phone, online or in person, she said. Its online calculations also show service members how their savings will develop over time. Military installations offer personal financial

managers at base family centers, Thompson added. The counselors are certified in financial counseling and can help families decide which of the two plans best meet their needs. Banks and credit unions also offer financial education, and the Thrift Savings Plan website offers a wealth of information as well, Thompson said. Regardless of the Thrift Savings Plan service members and families choose, they should periodically revisit their retirement accounts and stay informed by researching financial matters, Thompson said. “It’s not now, it’s the future you need to be thinking of,” she said. Zintkala Eiring, daughter of Chief Master Sgt. Chadwick Eiring, U.S. Air Forces in Europe and Air Forces Africa public affairs functional manager, was among the winners. I wrote about how my dad inspires me and my Sioux heritage,” Zintkala said. “He has always been my hero, and the struggles my people have had to endure for the past hundreds of years have always inspired me.” A total of 156 entries Air Force-wide were submitted to the Air Force Personnel Center. Applicants wrote a 500-word essay on what inspired them to be successful and why. “I’m incredibly proud of Zintkala, and to have her write about me as an inspiration came as a surprise,” Eiring said. “Really, I truly feel honored to be mentioned in her essay. We are very excited and thankful to Air Force Services for helping fund her college education.” Each winner received a $1,000 scholarship, a laptop and a portable printer to assist in education costs. Donations were used to purchase model seismographs, density scales and cylinders. The new equipment allows teachers to provide hands-on, practical experience in science, technology, engineering and math programs within the school. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Scales are essential in getting the kids to understand the concept of density,â&#x20AC;? said Kimberly Coard, Ramstein Middle School eighth grade science teacher. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Density is a hard concept to teach. Density is the basis for at least half the eighth grade course. Before, we had to find random objects and say this one is more dense and this one is less dense.â&#x20AC;? The equipment demonstrates density in a completely new way, providing measurable, tangible results instead of relying on visual representations. These tangible results were not limited to measuring density. The new

October carnival starts today by Petra Lessoing 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs

he Messeplatz fairgrounds in Kaiserslautern will turn into a big amusement park today to Oct. 28, when the city sponsors its traditional “Oktoberkerwe,” or October carnival. The carnival will feature rides for adults and children, a wide range of merchandise, and food and candy specialties. The history of carnivals in Kaiserslautern dates back to March

1571, when Emperor Maximilian II granted the town of Kaiserslautern the right to hold two cattle markets each year. For this event, travelers came to town, and the traditional “Kerwe,” or carnival, which nowadays is held in May and October, started to develop. Since World War II, the “Lautrer Kerwe” has had the reputation of being the biggest folks fest in the Westpfalz. Today, the carnival has

between 200,000 and 250,000 visitors. Oktoberkerwe will open at 5 p.m. today. The tapping of the first keg of beer is scheduled for 7 p.m. in the festival tent. When it’s dark, around 9 p.m., a fireworks display will light up the sky. The amusement park will feature a variety of rides, such as a roller coaster, the “Hot Shot,” the “King” and the “Crazy Mouse.” “Fantasy Drive” is a new haunted house that guarantees a good scare. The “Europa-Rad” is a giant Ferris wheel that provides views from 165 feet up. Children can have fun with skills games and take rides in miniscooters, merry-go-rounds and on ponies. Beer gardens, the chicken tent, and the bistro and wine tent will lure hungry and thirsty visitors. Palatinate and international culinary specialties such as crispy chicken, ham hocks, crepes, pizza and fish will also be available at the food booths. The “shopping street” will take visitors on a shopping trip. Until late at night, visitors can buy a variety of merchandise, including clothes, curtains, household items, leather goods, jewelry, spices, and arts and crafts items. The ride owners and vendors will say goodbye to their customers with a fireworks display at around 9 p.m. Oct. 28.

The Karate Tech class is offered to KMC members of all ages to learn selfdefense. The instructor trains students not only to compete in martial arts competitions, but to strengthen the body and soul. Using techniques created more than 1,400 years ago, students learn to improve selfdiscipline and to defend themselves if needed. Class instructors provide instructions on using a variety of techniques from several martial art disciplines. Classes are held at the Vogelweh and Ramstein community centers for students with all levels of karate experience.

Family fun ruck Approximately 75 members of the 435th Contingency Response Group conduct a 5-kilometer weighted-ruck march Oct. 11 on Ramstein. The squadron rucks every Friday morning, yearround, but this was the first time family members accompanied the Airmen. Family members were able to experience what the 435th CRG endures to ensure readiness. JOB OPPORTUNITY:

Wounded Warrior Project is seeking qualified applicants for a full-time, salaried Warrior Outreach Coordinator (WOC) position to support WWP Alumni and outreach programs in the LRMC and Ramstein area. The WOC is responsible for regularly communicating, networking, mentoring, and conducting outreach to Wounded Warriors located in the major military facilities/installations. The successful candidate will also coordinate with family members and the DOD/VBA/VHA offices to ensure that warriorsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; needs and medical care are met. This position also assists with the planning of WWP Alumni events (recreational activities, Project Odyssey, etc.) and also serves as a WWP representative at events benefitting the organization (i.e., media opportunities, fundraising events, etc.).
