CHIEVRES from Page 1 “We are a small and diverse squadron with a unique opportunity to work and learn from our joint and NATO partners,” said Coughlin. “Every ABS has their own unique construct, but what makes us different is having 17 Air Force Specialty Careers that make up our squadron that would traditionally fall into various groups throughout a wing.” The 424th ABS is a geographically separated unit of the 86th Airlift Wing at Ramstein Air Base, and it is located at U.S. Army Garrison-Benelux, Belgium. Their primary mission is to operate a NATO airfield in support of Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe and other distinguished visitors from any of the 30 NATO nations. “While they deal with a steep learning curve, the Airmen of the 424th ABS truly embody the Air Force Core Values of ‘service before self’ and ‘excellence in all we do,’ taking ownership and responsibility of the different programs and proving the best service and products as possible,” expressed Master Sgt. Stephen Spader, 424th ABS senior enlisted leader and Security Forces section chief. In celebration of 10 years of hard work and partnership with the local community, the 424th ABS hosted a farmer’s breakfast with a static display of a C-130J Super Hercules aircraft and squadron overview, which included an in-person survival evasion resistance and escape training with Airmen from the 86th Operations Support Squadron from Ramstein Air Base. The events also included a spouse’s day and an anniversary barbecue with closing remarks from Coughlin. “The Red Devils are a team of humble professionals that are experts at their job,” Coughlin said. “As their commander, I never worry about their ability to safely and effectively accomplish the mission.” As well as supporting DV airlift, Airmen from the 424th ABS operate a tactical landing zone and three drop zones in support of tactical flying training for both USAFE-AFAFRICA and NATO. “Bottom line, I’m proud of all the work the squadron has done to build relationships to strengthen joint, host nation, and NATO partnerships that improve our overall interoperability,” Coughlin expressed. “Building meaningful relationships takes professionalism and humility.”

The 424th Air Base Squadron welcomes local farmers to their Red Devils room at SHAPE Airfield-Chièvres Air Base, Belgium, Oct. 11. The event offered the 424th ABS and local farmers an opportunity to have open discussions about the 424th ABS mission, responsibilities and appreciation for allowing our flight line to pass through the farmland.

THE HOUSING HYPE Photo courtesy of the Housing Office

Energy conservation and climate change has become a constant discussion over the past few years. So, why should you be passionate about conserving energy in your home? Well, this boils down to two fundamental reasons: to save money and to reduce the amount of damage caused to the environment. Whether you live on-base or in our local communities, here are some easy ways to save energy costs while living in your home: KMC Housing energy conservation tips • Use sunlight whenever available, switch off lights when not required and adjust heating thermostat to lower temperature when you’re not home. • Draw your curtains at dusk to retain heat in your home, and make sure the curtains, or any furniture, are not blocking your radiators. • Dress for the weather. When you are at home, dress in warm clothing in the winter and cooler clothing in the summer to stay comfortable. • Turn off the lights when they are not in use. • Set your refrigerator temperature to the manufacturer's recommendation to avoid excessive cooling and wasting energy. • Turn water off when shaving, washing hands, brushing teeth. • Unplug unused electronics

• Conserve energy by not leaving electrical items on standby, prevent further wastage by not keeping laptops and mobile phones charging unnecessarily. • Take a 3-minute shower rather than a bath — showers use a lot less hot water. • Defrost frozen food in the fridge overnight, as this will reduce the cooking time. Keep internal doors closed to reduce draughts. • Dripping taps, if you live on-base, call the Housing Maintenance (Comm: 06371-463-9510) for a fix! If you are off-base, talk with your Landlord. • Winter Tip for base Town House Families… when temperatures are below freezing; ensure the outside technical room is always closed. As a reminder, the maintenance responsibility for technical rooms belongs to the Housing Maintenance Contractor, Vectrus. For repairs, call Comm Phone: 06371-463-9510. • During the winter months, cover your outside water facets to prevent burst water pipes. To help with all of your housing needs, visit the KMC Housing Office on Vogelweh, Building 1001, or call 0631-536-6672/ DSN 489-6672 for assistance. ENERGY TIP OF THE WEEK With the heating season fast approaching, and newcomers joining the KMC, we would like to highlight key facts for their new heating system: »» The heating costs increase with the room temperature setting. Heating costs rise by around 6% for each additional °Celsius/°Fahrenheit. Every degree less helps save energy and costs. »» It has been proposed that 18-20 °C (64-68 °F) can be a comfortable indoor temperature for general population. »» As a tip: Set room thermostat/radiator valve dial to 18 °C (64 F) as a starting point, and then increase by 1 degree each day until you find a temperature your family is comfortable with, taking into consideration infants and/or elderly family members.

to the customer at the post office for items sent using either of these services.

The 2022 recommended holiday season mailing dates for Air Force customers assigned to the European theater are:

Cushioning Place cushioning around your items. Close and gently shake the box to see whether there is enough padding. Place an extra address label with the delivery and return addresses inside the package to ensure it can be delivered in case the outside label becomes damaged or falls off.

• USPS Retail Ground – Nov. 23 • First Class Mail and Priority Mail – Dec. 9 • Priority Mail Express Military Service – Dec. 16 These dates are for mail originating in Europe and destined to locations in the United States. Customers in the United States who mail to European APO/FPO/DPO addresses normally use similar recommended mailing dates. U.S. Air Forces Europe - Air Forces Africa postal patrons should plan ahead and mail early to ensure letters, cards, and packages arrive to intended U.S. destinations in time for the holidays. Customers can avoid long lines at the post office when they mail early and can take advantage of using the cheaper, although slower, USPS Retail Ground mail service military post offices offer in Europe. USPS Retail Ground mail service takes longer to arrive at the end destination and moves via ground once it arrives in the states. Customers who want faster service should consider using priority mail or PMEMS if available. This costs more but these classes of mail get preferred and/or expedited service. Most mail accepted at military post offices in Europe is flown to the United States on commercial aircraft. Once mail arrives stateside, it’s transported based on the service selected and paid for. Customers should keep in mind, packages transiting through the mail stream are handled numerous times, and therefore proper packaging is very important. The following USPS mailing tips are provided to help ensure packages arrive safely and undamaged: The box Choose a box with enough room for cushioning material around the contents. Sturdy paperboard or corrugated fiberboard boxes are best for weights up to 10 pounds. If reusing a box, cover up or mark-out any old labels and markings. USPS provided boxes Priority Mail Express and Priority Mailboxes are available at no cost

Sealing Tape the box shut and reinforce the seams with 2-inch-wide tape. Use clear or brown packaging tape, reinforced packing tape, or paper tape. Liquids (some host country restrictions apply, check with your post office personnel) Nonflammable, nonhazardous liquids are acceptable to mail, if sealed inside a waterproof container. The outer container with the address label should also be strong and securely sealed. Mailers must mark the outer container of a mail piece containing liquid to indicate the nature of the contents and annotate “this side up” on the package. Packages containing liquids need to be carefully packed to withstand the grueling transportation journey. Size The weight of each package cannot exceed 70 pounds. For customers planning to use Priority Mail Express or Priority Mail services for faster delivery, length plus girth (girth is the distance around the thickest part of the package) cannot exceed 108 inches. For USPS Retail Ground, the total girth cannot exceed 130 inches. Packages are also subject to minimum dimensions. No package may be smaller than 5 inches long, 3-1/2 inches high and be at least 0.007 inches thick. Correct address Using a complete and correct address is critical for timely delivery. To find the correct spelling of a city name and state abbreviation or to find a ZIP-Code, visit www.usps.com. Print or type the delivery address parallel to the longest side of the package. Type or print clearly with a pen or permanent marker so that the address is legible from an arm’s length away. Return address Print or type the address in the upper left corner on the same side of the package as the delivery address.

USPS extra services Extra services can provide additional protection and peace of mind. • Adult Signature - Requires the signature of someone 21 years of age or older at the recipient’s address. • Certificate of Mailing Provides evidence of mailing. • Certified Mail - Provides proof of mailing at time of mailing and the date and time of delivery or attempted delivery. • Insured Mail - Provides coverage against loss or damage up to $5,000. Fee based on value of item. »» USPS Priority Mail service includes up to $100 of insurance with most shipments (restrictions apply) »» USPS Priority Mail Express service includes up to $100 of insurance with most shipments (restriction apply) • Registered Mail (service not available at all locations) Provides maximum security. Includes proof of mailing at time of mailing and the date and time of delivery or attempted delivery. Insurance can be added up to $50,000. Fee based on value of item. • USPS Tracking - Provides the date and time of delivery or attempted delivery. Free with select services. • Signature Confirmation Provides the date and time of delivery or attempted delivery and the name of the person who signed for the item. Customers can request a printed copy of the signature. • Return Receipt - Provides a postcard or electronic notification with the date of delivery and recipient signature. • Restricted Delivery - Confirms that only a specified person, or authorized agent, will receive a piece of mail. Customs declaration form All mail originating outside of the United States is subject to customs examination. Mailers are responsible for accurately completing USPS customs forms when mailing packages containing dutiable goods to the United States. Mailers are also required to certify the information provided is correct and the items do not contain any dangerous article, or articles prohibited by legislation or by postal or customs regulations. The sender’s failure to complete the form prop-

erly could delay delivery of the item. In August 2020, the USPS phased out the green and white customs declaration forms that most patrons were accustomed to when mailing. This change of policy derived from the Global Trade Compliance requirements instituted back in 2015 that resulted in changes to processing and dispatching of all DOD military mail services overseas. To alleviate GTC holds and your package being Return to Sender, customers need to be very descriptive when listing items on the customs form. Below are the typical “vague descriptions” and prohibited non-mailable items identified by U.S. Postal Inspection Service that will trigger GTC holds or RTS action. This list is not all-inclusive: Vague descriptions: • Electronics • Gifts • Household Goods • Medicine • Merchandise • Sporting Goods/Camping Equipment • Toys • Sample(s) Prohibited, non-mailable Items: • Cigarettes; including loose – selfrolling tobacco • Hand Sanitizer • Alcoholic Beverages • Vape Products: All Items • Chewing Tobacco Other: • Perfume and Cologne are mailable only with Zero alcohol content (must indicate on Customs Form). Items containing alcohol are non-mailable. • Packages or parcels containing pre-owned electronic devices with lithium batteries are mailable. Restricted to USPS Retail ground only and this service is not available at all Military Postal Offices, contact your local installation post office for additional information. Customers can avoid waiting in line longer at post office finance

windows if they complete an online customs declaration form using the USPS website prior to presenting packages for mailing at the APO. In addition, some post offices will make available or offer a separate, expedited mail acceptance window as an incentive for customers who arrive at the post office with online, pre-printed USPS electronic customs declarations forms. Customers have several options available to them when completing required electronic customs declarations using the USPS.com website: Option 1: Customers can choose the USPS Click-N-Ship feature to establish an account, complete their customs declaration and pay for their mailing using one of several USPS approved credit cards. Option 2: Customers can print a customs declaration at home on the USPS website without establishing an account and then pay at the postal finance window when presenting their parcels and packages for mailing. Option 3: Postal patrons who do not present articles for mailing with an online declaration can still mail their packages using the hard copy PS Form 2976-R, USPS Customs Declaration and Dispatch Note declaration form. However, the accepting finance mail clerk must enter the information from the PS Form 2976R into the Customs Border Protection Manifest system via the USPS Point of Sale retail terminal with the customer present, as clarifying questions may be required to ensure that PS Form 2976-R contains accurate and complete data to complete the mailing transaction. This will result in longer customer waiting times and longer lines at the post office finance windows. Contact the local installation postmaster for additional information on customs form requirements and for advice on the best service to use based on your mailing needs.

TALK OF THE TOWN: Union Community Bruchmühlbach-Miesau by Gina Hutchins-Inman 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Many members of the Kaiserslautern Military Community have found temporary or even permanent homes in one of the many villages and towns surrounding Kaiserslautern or in the heart of the Palatinate Forest. Talk of the Town is a series highlighting the union communities within the County of Kaiserslautern, the City of Kaiserslautern and the Union Community of Winnweiler in neighboring Donnersberg County. The series aims to inform American service members and their families about the communities they’re joining during their time in the KMC. A Union Community is an administrative territorial community composed of a group of individual towns or villages. Each month we will feature a different community and provide facts about its history, heritage, and the local experiences it offers. Our next stop will lead us to the Union Community of Bruchmühllbach-Miesau, which lies on the western end of Kaiserslautern County and along the banks of the Glan River. We invite you to discover interesting and maybe not-so-well-known facts about your home away from home. The Union Community of Bruchmühlbach-Miesau consists of the individual towns and villages of Bruchmühlbach-Miesau, Gerhardsbrunn, Lambsborn,

Bruchmühlbach train station

Langwieden and Martinshöhe. Vogelbach and Elschbach are considered to be sections of the administrative seat in Bruchmühlbach-Miesau. The total union community has about 10,400 inhabitants with about 100 Kaiserslautern Military Community families who also call it their home. Mayor Erik Emich has been in office since 2016 and would like to extend a warm welcome (see Page 7). Bruchmühlbach-Miesau is the home of the Miesau Army Depot, which was founded in May 1949. At that time it served as a point to transport and store construction materials for military facilities nearby to the Glantal train station in neighboring Bahnhof Schönenberg-Kübelberg. Today it is used to store a multitude of military supplies and equipment. Celts, Romans and a huge swamp An old military and trading route existed in the area during prehistoric times. Celtic and Roman tribes settled on the edge of the “Bruch,” a swamp area, and the Westricher Hochfläche (Westrich highlands). Remnants of these early settlements can be found as grave mounds, coins, tools and also the menhir called “Römerstein” (Roman stone). Administrative areas, referred to as a “Gau” were established during the Franconian Empire starting in the 4th century. During this period the Nahegau, Bliesgau and Wormsgau were within today’s boundaries of the union commu-

nity. The individual “Gaus” came under the jurisdiction of the bishops of Mainz, Metz and Worms. At about the beginning of the 12th century, the Kurpfalz region, the Pfalz-Zweibrücken region and Sickingen County all ran together at Bruchmühlbach-Miesau. Due to swampy geological terrain at that time, there were hundreds of ponds and lakes and many families made a living out of breeding fish or handcrafting angler’s equipment. Others in dryer areas were farmers or craftsmen. From an emperor’s road to a customs hub Many changes occurred at the beginning of the 19th century when Emperor Napoleon I (Bonaparte) conquered the area and constructed a permanent road, commonly known as Kaiserstrasse (emperor’s road), today’s L395. The road served as a strategic military road. Along the road businesses selling horse wagons boomed and guest houses and inns flourished. The “Alte Posthalterei” (old postal office) developed into a busy mail hub with a lodging facility where Napoleon stayed overnight on numerous occasions. The times after World War I and II Twice in its history, in 1919 after the separation of the Saar area based on the Versailles Peace Treaty, and again in 1948 in the scope of a new separation of the Saar area from the German economic area, BruchmühlbachMiesau developed into a customs

train station with high significance well beyond the region. Fun, sun and cool wet! A very popular summer spot is a pool called the “Warmfreibad,” which is located idyllically in the middle of green. You can enjoy the sun, just relax in the large sunbathing area under the shade of the trees and take a break from your daily routine. There are a number of options for young guests, such as a wide wavy slide and a current canal as well as splashing pools for the younger ones. And the water temperature is at least 24 C (75 F). In addition, there are a number of clubs and associations, such as soccer, tennis, horseback riding and bow and arrow shooting. Join in and meet some German neighbors and friends. Clean until you open a museum! You can really clean up at the Staubsauger Museum in Miesau. This vacuum cleaner museum features a wide selection of vacuum models throughout the decades. Since 1990 Alois Steffgen has been a specialist for cleaning and vacuuming technology and during his career he was inspired to open a museum. For example, in 1993 he received an inquiry from an 83-year-old carpenter who had a model Nilfisk S 59 vacuum cleaner that ran on 210 watts. He had bought the machine from his boss in the 1930s. As he couldn’t take it with him when fleeing during World War II, he buried it in the

Belzmühltal

garden for a year. Vacuum cleaners were a luxury in the early 1900s and especially after World War II. Upon his return he dug it out, and although it was somewhat rusty, it still worked, and he used it until 1993. Admission is free, but a booking is requested at alois.steffgen@haste-innovation.de. Biking, hiking and leisure activities There are several exciting biking and mountain biking trails that start in BruchmühlbachMiesau. The Fritz-Claus-Hütte Burg Nanstein Loop, the Panarama View Mirador-Ziegelberg Loop and the Höcherturm – Ohmbachsee Loop are a few examples. In addition, hiking enthusiasts have several picturesque trails to choose from. The Natural Habitat Elendsklamm is a certified and recommended German route. The 5,7-km-long circular hiking trail will lead you through an impressing “jungle” with rare animals and plants within a unique habitat. The trail leads over the Sickinger Höhe at the beginning and is wellequipped and secured with bridges, railings, and steps. When hiking in late autumn or winter weatherproof attire is advised. In summer, the trail offers a cool refreshment on hot days. Hikers are advised to take a GPS system or a map and refreshments with them. Saddle up When the Riding and Driving Club in Miesau held its first tournament on a makeshift dirt track within today’s Miesau Army Depot premises on Pentecost Monday in 1922, little could it know that the races would develop and become well-known throughout Germany. Three years later, a spectators’ grandstand was completed, and races took place every Pentecost weekend up to the war. The track was destroyed during the war and therefore the club concentrated on dressage and show jumping tournaments afterwards. In 1974 races commenced again and have drawn riders and crowds from near and far. Tournaments take place every year on the Pentecostal weekend in May or June and you can bet that the event has developed into one of the leading equestrian festivities in Germany. How it used to be — Heimatmuseum “Wie’s frieher wor” and Happy is the Miller The small museum on the former hayloft in Lambsborn displays several historic agricultural tools and objects traditionally used on a farm for centuries. At the vintage farmhouse you can enjoy handson experiences of the life and times of a farmer and get a glimpse of potatoes, schnapps distilling and its history. Or you might want to visit a traditional mill. The Tausend Mühle in Bruchmühlbach is one

of the last grain mills in the region and looks upon a 400-year ever changing history. The mill built in 1598 had a total of 26 owners, some of them rather obscure and whimsical people, who carried out their tasks as millers in a “hit or miss” way. Up to a few years ago the mill was operated by the Frank family and delivered products to many bakeries in the region. Today the mill complex houses a small mill store where you can buy flour and regional culinary specialties. The mill is also located along the “Sagenhafter Waldpfad,” which means you can combine a visit with a leisure hike. https://www. tourismus-vgbm.de/kultur-tradition/muehlen/ The town offers a number of scenic historical farmhouses and you definitely won’t go hungry in any of the restaurants, cafes and beer gardens. You can also enjoy shopping in one of the quaint stores. For a longer stay, there are several cozy log cabin huts that offer accommodation and regional specialties. https://www.tourismus-vgbm.de/bleiben-geniessen/ huettenzauber/ The residents of Bruchmühlbach-Miesau greatly enjoy festivities and events. The Wikingerfest in Elschbach in mid-September is a highlight. It invites you to step back into the wild days of the Vikings and experience games where ferocious men and women in traditional attire hurl stones and compete in tug-of-war or

carry around the Viking chief. Other events include a traditional “Kerwe,” a village fest in every individual town or village as well as in Miesau at the end of October. The Nikolausmarkt on the first Sunday in December in Bruchmühlbach and the Christmas Market on the second Advent weekend in Miesau, as well as smaller markets in the individual villages, get you into the holiday spirit. Did you know that… • In 1997 the population in the area was 11,190, which is higher than it is today with its 10,400 residents? • Beavers are back in town? In the year 2000 there were only three beavers left in Rheinland-Pfalz. A “castle” built by a beaver family was discovered close to Autobahn A6 near Bruchmühlbach in June 2022. About 300 of the rodents call the area home today. • The name of the River Glan is of Celtic origin and means “light, clear, shining, flowing” and is derived from the Celtic goddess Glanis? • In 1890 the Glantalbahn (Glan valley railroad) was constructed along the banks to deploy German troops to France? Nowadays, partial sections in neighboring Kusel County are open for Draisine tours (trolley rides). https://landkreis-kusel. de/tourismus/draisine.html

Approximately 800 equipment items arrived aboard the commercial cargo vessel Liberty Promise and will stage at the port in preparation for onward movement to locations in the European theater. The operation is the single largest deployment of U.S. Army equipment conducted at the port and is the culmination of months of planning and coordination. “We’ve been working closely with our Slovenian allies and the 101st to ensure the reception, staging and onward movement of

the 101st DSB’s equipment would be executed rapidly and safely,” said Lt. Col. Carey Way, 839th Transportation Battalion commander. “As soon as we received the Liberty Promise at the port, we were able to immediately begin downloading equipment and the cooperation between SDDC, the 21st Theater Sustainment Command, 16th Sustainment Brigade, our Slovenian partners and the port has been tremendous.” Efficiently moving the 101st DSB’s equipment from the port to follow-on locations in Poland and Romania via commercial rail and trucking is the responsibility of the 21st TSC, who execute the complex coordination required to deliver the 101st DSB’s equipment. “It has been a great experience working with the different entities here to conduct the

Christian Enriquez, company commander, 386th Transportation Detachment, 39th Transportation Battalion. “This port is extremely beneficial and of strategic importance to be able to conduct onward movement and show we can do this from multiple ports. The relationship that we are building with the Slovenians has been rewarding. It’s all about partnerships and relationships. It’s important to know that it’s not just us here. It’s the Slovenian Army, the Slovenian employees at the port, the 101st and V Corps. It’s a team of teams making this mission happen.” Successful reception, staging and onward movement operations require extensive planning with host-nation allies. Mr. William Dees, Director, Western

Being good neighbors through energy conservation by Erik J. Lagerquist and Arlene Soto-Maldonado 86th Civil Engineer Squadron

provide heat. Please do not use unapproved devices to provide heat; do not use your oven to heat your house. Please, Please, Please, no open flames. A wood burning stove, with a door and proper connection to a chimney is great; one or two candles are fine for light, but absolutely no fire pits inside. If you have radiators in your house, do not block with covers and/or furniture. This blocks heat from traveling freely and decreases radiator efficiency. Do not increase thermostat temperature or turn up valve dial setting, and then open window to let the excess heat out for long periods of time. This will increase energy waste, as temperature (heat) travels from hot to cold. In addition, all surfaces will lose heat that was stored inside them.

Winter is coming. In case you haven’t noticed cooler temperatures both in the mornings and evenings, changing colors of leaves on trees, or recent availability of pumpkin spice flavored coffees at the KMCC, winter is coming, soon. The good news: there is no zombie apocalypse of white walkers coming to Germany. The bad news: utility costs are rising very rapidly. Every October, the Department of the Air Force pushes information, advice, and other tools to help motivate Airmen and civilians to move toward energy conversation measures. This includes energy saving in your home, office space, and even, ground transportation. We encourage all personnel to be good neighbors to our Host Nation by practicing energy conservation measures. Doing so will combat possible utility bill increases, help comply with Host Nation energy reduction plans, and possibly prevent fuel shortages. Simple, repetitive, daily actions have a big impact long-term, in terms of energy. What is the definition of energy conservation? In simple terms, energy conservation is a decision and an action, that you as a person, make to use less energy in your everyday life. First, this can help you save your money. Second, this can help extend fuel resources like heating oil and natural gas. Finally, and most importantly, help preserve our environment. Most energy consumed today is still produced by burning fossil fuel; 40 percent of the fuel used by Germany to produce heat comes from natural gas. Burning these fuels create emissions, like smoke, that enter the environment and create a greenhouse effect and traps heat, which makes Earth temperatures unstable and contribute to climate change. What can we do to conserve energy? First and foremost, lower your thermostats in your home, which leads to consuming less energy, albeit with a slightly cooler home. The World Health Organization (WHO) proposed 18 degrees centigrade (C) (64 Fahrenheit) as a safe and well-balanced indoor

Graphic by Staff Sgt. Leah Ritchie

temperature to protect the health of general populations during cold seasons. Ideally, start with thermostats at 18 C (64 F), and then increase by one degree each day until you find a temperature your family is comfortable with, taking into consideration infants and elderly family members. If you do not have a thermostat, and merely a dial on a radiator, start below the mid-point and adjust accordingly. The Air Force estimates 30 percent of energy is wasted in commercial buildings, on average. To help reduce energy consumption and waste at your office follow at least one of these practices: • Turn off lights when not in use or when natural daylight is sufficient. • During winter season, modify temperature in offices based on business hours. • Make sure all radiators or A/C vents are free and clear of large office furniture. • Turn off monitors at the end of workday. Enable power management function on office computers, which automatically puts monitors to sleep when not in use. • Turn off office equipment when it is not needed at night or on

weekends. Activate sleep settings on all printers, copiers, fax machines, scanners, and multifunction devices so that they automatically enter a low-powered sleep mode when inactive. Our Airmen living in dormitories or Lodging, and our families living on base in Military Family Housing also play a big role in helping to reduce our installation energy bill. To help reduce energy at your dorm, lodging room, or your home, follow at least one of these practices: • Turn off power to computers, TVs, exercise equipment, lights, and all electronic devices when not in use to avoid wasting standby power. • Plug multiple devices into a power strip with a surge protector so you can turn them all off with the flip of one switch, while also protecting them from damage. • Use water wisely. Turn it off when not in use, such as while brushing teeth and shaving. • Turn up or down your thermostat by two degrees. Each degree that you lower a thermostat can reduce your heating costs by as much as 3 percent.

• Dress for the season. Wear sweaters, long pants, and or extra blankets when it’s cold. What should we not do? One issue that comes with trying to conserve energy by keeping your home slightly cooler than normal, is some people to try innovative, alternative ways to

Bottom Line: Whatever temp you do settle on, remember, consistency is key! Radical swings in temperature demands, like turning thermostat up and then down, like a roller coaster is worse than simply keeping a lower setting, all the time. Lastly, be safe, be smart, hope for another mild winter and spring will be here before we know it. OPSEC: Loose lips might destroy airstrips

by Senior Airman Thomas Karol 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs

Graphic by Senior Airman Thomas Karol

The saying “loose lips sink ships,” was introduced during World War II and can still have a similar significance today. Operational Security is something every Airman and civilian in the U.S. Air Force should know about and it is critical in protecting the mission and people all over the world. According to Air Force Instruction 10-701, which covers Operational Security, if critical information and indicators are disclosed, it could allow adversaries, or potential adversaries, to identify and exploit vulnerabilities leading to increased risk to mission failure or the loss of life. “OPSEC is an informationrelated capability, which preserves friendly essential secrecy by using a process to identify, control and protect critical information,” said U.S. Air Force Master Sgt. Cesar Velasco, 86th Airlift Wing OPSEC manager. “In other words, it is the way we protect individual pieces of information that adversaries can use to paint a bigger picture.” Small pieces of information can be used to cause harm to the Air Force and its members. Without the practice of OPSEC, the mission could come to a standstill and adversaries may gain the upper hand in a conflict.

“Essential secrecy is achieved by denying critical information and indicators to our adversaries,” Velasco said. “It can hinder or prevent friendly forces from achieving their mission if our adversaries possess this information. Every essential secret piece of information is crucial for effective operations.” There are plenty of ways potential adversaries can gather information about you or your office, however there are practices in place to prevent infractions. “Always be aware of your surroundings and who is around you,” said Maj. Sergio Dominguez, 693rd Intel Surveillance Reconnaissance Group data strategy lead. “Protect your personal data such as passwords, your Social Security Number, and bank information. There are also always people around your unit who can help point you in the right direction if you need help with anything OPSEC related.” OPSEC is a tested and trusted practice used throughout the military because of its thorough and detailed procedures, but it is only as strong as its weakest link. “OPSEC is all about protecting vulnerabilities,” Dominguez said. “The enemy is most likely not going to target our strong points, but our weaknesses. At the end of the duty day it is important we lock everything up. We cannot be around all the time to see what is

going on, however, we can do the best we can to protect ourselves and our sensitive materials.” Information and indicators protected by OPSEC are used to support planning, preparation, execution and post operation phases of missions and tasks across the full spectrum of military operations. OPSEC should be kept in mind at all times, and this extends to our family members as well. “Adversaries see family members as soft targets and an easy way to get ahold of information,” Velasco said. “Whether or not family members know it, they have access to a lot of sensitive information. Family members who know and realize what to protect, how to protect it, and why to protect can help safeguard critical military information.” Social media is also a vulnerability. If it is on social media, chances are adversaries can see it and use it against you or the military, Velascio explained. “OPSEC plays a huge role in our social media presence,” Velasco said. “It is so easy to divulge sensitive information on the internet and not realize how detrimental it can be to the Air Force. Once it is on the internet, it can be there forever and for all to see.” Loose lips outside of work could also expose a vulnerability, Velasco explained. A small detail can be the last thing the enemy needs to complete a plan or attack. “Now that we can go off base in uniform for lunch or a quick shopping trip, it is easy to talk shop,” Velasco said. “Just be mindful who is listening and if it is not on the critical information and indicators list. Avoid talking about the who, what, when, where and why.” Education is the best way for members to familiarize themselves with OPSEC. The 86th AW and the Air Force have multiple resources service members can use to familiarize themselves with the ins-andouts of OPSEC. Contact 86AW.XP.OPSEC@us.af.mil or DSN 480-4107 for more information about base OPSEC procedures.

The Department of the Air Force released its Climate Action Plan Oct. 4, which defines how it will preserve operational capability, increase resiliency, and do its part to help mitigate future climate impacts through specific and measurable objectives and key results. It lays out its enterprise-wide approach to ensuring policies, technology innovation, and evolving operations remain relevant in a changing climate. “Make no mistake — the department’s mission remains to fly, fight, and win, anytime and anywhere. We are focused on modernization and improving our operational posture relative to our pacing challenge: China. We remain ready to respond and achieve air and space dominance when and where the nation needs us,”

said Secretary of the Air Force Frank Kendall. “Our mission remains unchanged, but we recognize that the world is facing ongoing and accelerating climate change and we must be prepared to respond, fight, and win in this constantly changing world.” The plan outlines three major priorities that ensure the Department of the Air Force maintains the ability to operate under a changing climate, preserves operational capability, protects its systems, and contributes toward enhancing climate change mitigation. 1. Maintain air and space dominance in the face of climate risks: Invest in climate-ready and resilient infrastructure and facilities so our installations are better able to project air and space combat power. 2. Make climate informed decisions: Develop a cli-

mate-informed workforce, integrate security implications of climate change into Department strategy, planning, training, and operations, and incorporate climate considerations into Department requirements, acquisition, logistics, supply chain processes, and wargaming. 3. Optimize energy use and pursue alternative energy sources: Expand operational capability and power projection to support operations globally while simultaneously reducing greenhouse gas emissions and adopting cost-competitive alternative energy sources. The department will provide updates as necessary to address new policies, technology innovation and evolving missions that answer emerging climate concerns.

Army Ten-Miler at ROB

Participants in the 38th Annual U.S. Army Ten-Miler prepare to start the race at Rhine Ordnance Barracks, Oct. 6.

by Jeff Jurgensen 598th Transportation Brigade Public Affairs U.S. Army Soldiers assigned to the 838th Transportation Battalion hosted and ran the 38th Annual Army Ten-Miler on Rhine Ordnance Barracks, Oct. 6. The worldwide event consists of a primary run with thousands of participants in Washington D.C., along with synchronized ten-mile runs at Army installations and commands throughout the globe. This is the second year the 838th organized the run for the Kaiserslautern Military Community. “It’s truly an honor and privilege to be able to do this here in Germany,” said Lt. Col. Jermon Tillman, 838th Trans. Bn. commander. “Last year was the first time our battalion ran this event here and the reception was just phenomenal. This year we had over 200

participants from all over Europe and we could not have been more excited to get out there and run with our teammates this morning.” While the 838th Trans. Bn. is headquartered at Kleber Kaserne, the run was held at Rhine Ordnance Barracks and included support from both the U.S. Army Garrison, Rheinland-Pfalz team and the local USO. This year’s ten-mile run involved both military and civilian participants, on a route through streets and wooded trails. Road guards, medics and other support members ensured the run was conducted safely and the 839th provided water at several stations throughout the course. The top finishers in the year’s run were CPT Lemar Baliwag, 21st Theater Sustainment Command, who finished in 1 hour and 2 minutes and Ms. Dani Springfels, who completed the ten miles in 1 hour 3 minutes.

2022-2023 Flu Vaccination Campaign kickoff Story and photos by Centers for Disease Control and Prevention

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the National Foundation for Infectious Diseases kicked off the 2022-2023 flu vaccination season during a press conference held in person at the National Press Club for the first time since before the COVID-19 pandemic, Oct. 4. Leading infectious disease experts, including CDC Director Dr. Rochelle P.

Walensky, emphasized the importance of flu vaccination and getting up to date on other routine immunizations, including pneumococcal vaccination.

Dr. Walensky presented an overview of last flu season, reviewed the most recent flu vaccination coverage data, and discussed the upcoming flu season, including a notable change to the flu vaccine recommendations for this season; the preferential recommendation BOARD CERTIFIED PLASTIC SURGEON

for specific vaccines for people 65 years and older.

Overall, during the 2021-2022 flu season, about 51 percent of the U.S. population 6 months and older received a flu vaccine, which has changed little compared to the previous two flu seasons and even prior to the pandemic. However, there were some concerning findings in flu vaccination coverage estimates, including: • decreases in coverage among children and pregnant people that have occurred since the COVID-19 pandemic, • the fact that only about 43 percent of adults 18-49 years with a chronic health condition got a flu vaccine last season, and • persistent racial and ethnic disparities. During most seasons people 65 years and older bear the greatest burden of severe flu disease, accounting for the majority of flurelated hospitalizations and deaths. For the 2022-2023 flu season, there are three flu vaccines that are preferentially recommended for people 65 years and older. These are Fluzone High-Dose Quadrivalent vaccine, Flublok Quadrivalent recombinant flu vaccine and Fluad Quadrivalent adjuvanted flu vaccine. This preferential recommendation was based on a review of available studies which suggested that, in this age group, these vaccines are potentially more effective than standard dose unadjuvanted flu vaccines. People 65 years and older should try to get one of these three preferentially recommended vaccines. If none of these three vaccines is available at the time of administration, people in this age

group should get any other ageappropriate flu vaccine instead. While COVID-19 vaccines have been rightfully the focus of much attention during the COVID-19 pandemic, experts at the press conference urged the public to remember the ongoing importance of flu and pneumococcal vaccination. Dr. Walensky noted that CDC is preparing for the return of flu this season and reminded attendees that flu vaccines and COVID-19 vaccines can be given in the same visit if the timing coincides. Both vaccines have been shown to reduce illnesses, hospitalizations and deaths. Flu continues to pose a serious potential public health threat, and annual flu vaccination remains a critical tool to prevent flu and its potentially serious outcomes. CDC and its many partners work to improve flu vaccine uptake each year. CDC has launched a digital campaign called “Help Them Fight Flu” to encourage parents of young children to get them vaccinated against flu. CDC’s “Help Them Fight Flu” communication activation is available for everyone to participate in. (Upload your own flu vaccination photos in one of the customizable frames and share

with your family, friends and followers.) CDC recommends everyone 6 months and older get a flu vaccine, ideally by the end of October. CDC also is continuing its collaboration with the AMA and the Ad Council to raise awareness among general population about the importance of flu vaccination, with a focus on Black and Hispanic audiences. This is one of the ways CDC is addressing persistent racial and ethnic disparities. CDC will release updated vaccine coverage and hospitalization data by race and ethnicity as well as more information on how CDC is working to address barriers to vaccination on October 18 in a Vital Signs MMWR report. CDC is already tracking flu vaccine distribution and coverage for the 2022-2023 flu season. As of Sep. 24, approximately 91 million doses of flu vaccine had been distributed while as of Sep. 10, 3.7 million doses had been administered to adults in pharmacies and physician offices. Over the course of the 20222023 flu season, CDC will share some preliminary, within-season, weekly flu vaccination data and coverage estimates using existing and new data sources through the Weekly National Flu Vaccination Dashboard. The dashboard will be updated regularly throughout the flu season as new data become available. CDC recommends everyone 6 months and older get vaccinated against flu each year. Flu vaccination reduces the burden of flu illness, hospitalization, and death and getting vaccinated could also help protect those who are more vulnerable to serious flu illness, like babies and young children, older people, and people with certain chronic health conditions. If you have questions about which flu vaccine is right for you or getting your flu vaccine at the same time as another vaccine, talk to your doctor, pharmacist, or health care provider.

21 TSC cultivates bonds with first annual Golftoberfest

Lt. Col. Gregory Fassett, chief of future operations, 21st Theater Sustainment Command, takes a golf swing during the Golftoberfest Golf Scramble at Woodlawn Golf Course on Ramstein Air Force Base, Sep. 30.

by Maj. Vonnie Wright 21st Theater Sustainment Command On a foggy and cool fall morning 77 Soldiers, Airmen and Civilians began warming up their golf swing to kick off their first Annual Golftoberfest Golf Scramble hosted by the 21st Theater Sustainment Command at Woodlawn Golf Course, Sep. 30. The myriad of golfers associated with “Team 21” received a rare opportunity to get to know some of their co-workers and Air

Force partners outside of business and work responsibilities. From the back-to-back operations that the sustainment force is providing from Operation Allies Welcome, to setting the theater across Europe, this was a welcome event to bond and build the team. According to Maj. Gen. James Smith, commanding general, 21st TSC, that’s exactly what he wanted to gain out of this event as he thanked every leader for sacrificing time away from their busy positions to enjoy the team building affair.

“I thank each and every one of you all for taking the time to fellowship,” said Smith. “We’re all busy. Take some time to introduce yourself to someone you don’t know. Please reach out, shake their hand, and introduce yourselves. This is what it’s about. Building strong teams and building Team 21.” However, connecting people through golf and strengthening collaboration wasn’t the sole purpose of the event. Golftoberfest was the rare opportunity to get to know colleagues outside of the office. KAISERSLAUTERN

Maj. Brian Welsh, commander, 167th Medical Augmentation Detachment, 512th Field Hospital felt this aspect and networking with others was necessary for his team’s work life balance. “I think this is a well-deserved day for the team,” said Welsh. “We’ve had a difficult time with being stationed here with the optempo [operational tempo]. So, sometimes it’s nice to kind of pause and get together with other units and get to know other people and network.” Team 21 has had team building events before, but none like this specifically for its key leaders. This was one of the many assignments Morgan Ridgway, future operations planner, 21st TSC, planned as a key civilian volunteering to come to the 21st TSC as part of the Expeditionary Civilian Workforce. Morgan came to the Millrinders June 1st fulfilling a request to augment the force during the Russian and Ukraine conflict. As a volun-

teer, she jumped at the opportunity to help any way she could in Germany. As a program manager working for the Army Fellows Program Logistics Career Field, she is amidst like-minded individuals working for the only TSC in the theater. When the opportunity arose to fulfill one of Smith’s initiatives for his staff, and give the key leaders a much-deserved time to enhance their camaraderie, she quickly volunteered. “I volunteered to do this because this is something new and it sounded like a fun challenge,” said Ridgway. Ridgway didn’t know anything about golf, but she received a lot of help in coordinating the event from her G35 FUOPS team and the golf team at Woodlawn Golf Course. Due to her efforts, this will now be an annual tradition and Team 21 looks forward to attracting more participants across the RheinlandPfalz community next year.

ULM from Page 1

servings are plentiful. Swabian food is delicious and includes specialities such as Spittle, Maultaschen and Schupfnudeln — best leave the diet at home. Highly recommended is Kornhäusle, a comfortable yet small crepe restaurant — delicious French savory pancakes. For great salads get down to Tagblatt, usually open until very late as you try out the beer-gardens towards the Danube River. Ulm also has some excellent kebab booths if you are looking for fast food.

also has the tallest church steeple across the world at an incredible 161,53 meters (almost 530 feet)! While standard German is spoken and understood in Ulm, Swabian is the local dialect here, and it may be somewhat difficult to understand for most tourists! A huge area of the city is on Danube’s left bank, including Ulm’s old town. On the right bank are the Unterweiler, Donaustetten, Gogglingen and Wiblingen districts. Across the River Danube on the opposite side is the city of New Ulm (Neu-Ulm) in Bavaria. The city stands at an elevation of 478 meters. Ulm is also known for a very eerie dense fog that appears several times a year, mainly during early spring and late autumn, where in most cases visibility is only 90 to 150 feet. The history of Ulm The first settlement in the city goes back to 5,000 BC with ancient settlements located around Lehr and Eggingen villages. Nonetheless, the earliest mention of the city in written media dates back to July 22, 854 AD, as King Louis signed some kind of a document in the “Hulma” palace of the King within the Duchy of Swabia. Ulm is also famous as the city where the genius Albert Einstein was born. What to see in Ulm There are lots of things to

Ulm Münster (cathedral).

see in Ulm. You can start your Ulm adventure at the Ulmer Münster, a cathedral built in the 14th century, with the current version entirely completed about 1890. Within the Münster are fascinating choir stalls created in the 15th century by Jörg Syrlin. To reach the steeple, the highest in the world, you need to climb 768 steps for one of the most amazing views of the region. During clear days the Alps are visible and the long climb is worth it. Since Ulm is the city where Albert Einstein was born, there is a very strange-looking fountain of the iconic physicist and Nobel Laureate you might want to view. It’s an excellent memorial for the genius, and great for unusual selfies! The Fischerviertel or Fishermen’s Quarter is one of

the scenic old parts of Ulm. It’s made up of half timbered houses located around the Blau River where a very crooked looking hotel known as the SchiefesHaus (constructed in the 16th century) still stands. There are cobblestone streets that harken back to another era when tanners and fishermen used to live around the area. Along the Fortress Way or the FestungsWeg is a chance to walk and see some of the Federal fortifications built from 1842 to 1859 as you follow the signs in German along the way. The FestungsWeg has over 800 rooms within its four main wings and used to be the largest German fortress at one time. Museum der Brotkultur, or the world’s largest bread museum, is also in Ulm with English guided tours. In the museum

there are more than 17,000 artifacts of bread with most in special storage. The informative artifacts cover more than bread’s 6,000 year history with art categories showing works of art made from bread by such artists as Salvatore Dali. You can also visit the Farmer’s Market on Saturday and Wednesday which is usually held just in front of the Munster. To buy something to remember Ulm by, you can take the main shopping streets that begin from the train station and follow them directly towards the Ulmer Munster Cathedral. Ulm eats Around Ulm are so many places to sample a meal in quiet and nice areas such as the Fischerviertel, where genuine beer and food in unique German Photo by saiko3p/Shutterstock.com

Drinking in Ulm Try a couple of drinking dens by visiting the Barfüßer restaurant and brewery to enjoy their own house brewed beer or check out what is on offer at the Barfüßer beer garden towards the Danube river. For some Irish hospitality, try Murphy’s Law or one of the coolest beer gardens in Ulm, the Schlössle, 15 kilometers away from the city center where all kinds of beers, including their own special brew, awaits you. Getting to Ulm There are many ways to arrive in Ulm, such as through the train from Stuttgart, which is just an hour away. Driving from Kaiserslautern or Wiesbaden takes around 3 hours. From Stuttgart it takes just over an hour. Once you are in the city center, you can walk about with ease as much as there are so many buses you can use, including sightseeing boats along the Donau or Danube River.

Due to regulations to prevent the spread of COVID-19, bookings and trips may be cancelled or postponed, and travel to neighboring countries may not be allowed.
