Revamped Heart Link links spouses Story and photos by Airman 1st Class Milton Hamilton Jr. 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs

Juli Robertson, Airmen Family Readiness Center community readiness specialist, and Ruthy Srun, AFRC community readiness consultant, look over the itinerary for Heart Link on Ramstein Air Base Sept. 28. Robertson and Srun have worked for the AFRC for many years and have helped to assimilate many military spouses.

The Airman and Family Readiness Center held Heart Link, a free event for military spouses, at the Ramstein Officer’s Club Sept. 28. “The AFRC is here to provide a multitude of services to families, whether it’s financial advice, relocation assistance, or personal and family services, like the Heart Link program,” said Juli Robertson, AFRC community readiness specialist. The event, newly revamped to include increased networking and to accommodate today’s needs, allowed spouses an opportunity to build connections. “Heart Link has traditionally been Air Force 101 for spouses,” said Ruthy Srun, AFRC community readiness consultant. “Our target audience are those who have been married five years or less. We want them to build relationships with one another, with base leadSee HEART, Page 2

can assist with financial issues. “As a full-time retiree, I think it’s a great idea,” said Lou de Andrade, 86th Airlift Wing Retiree Activities Office director. “It’s an opportunity for retirees to see the design of the program: to thank them for their service. It’s a chance for them to see that the military still supports them, whether in uniform or not.” More than 4,000 retirees within the KMC will have the opportunity to see just how much their service is appreciated. In addition to Retiree Appreciation Day, all four Army Dental Clinics in

the KMC will be open to see military retirees from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Oct. 17, and retirees will be able to tour a C-130J Super Hercules on Ramstein’s flight line Oct. 19. This year, the Retiree Activities Office is asking those who wish to attend to RSVP by email and to be signed-in and seated at the KMC Retiree Appreciation Day event before breakfast begins at 9 a.m. To RSVP email the retiree’s office at 86aw.rao@us.af.mil or for any questions, please contact the 86th AW Retiree Activities Office at 480-5486, 06371-47-5486 or by email.

76th AS flight attendant leads innovation across USAFE Story and photo by Airman 1st Class Devin M. Rumbaugh 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Flying into a foreign country has its challenges. On top of the task of preparing meals for distinguished visitors and crew members, U.S. Air Force flight attendants were also responsible for carrying American currency. Because of one flight attendant’s efforts, a new system was developed and implemented to help save flight attendants from a pricey burden. The 86th Force Support Squadron Continuous Process Improvement and Innovation Program recognized Staff Sgt. Jodi Danielson, 76th Airlift Squadron C-40B instructor flight attendant, for developing a new system using a special government travel card, eliminating the need for all flight attendants across United States Air Forces in Europe to carry cash on missions. Danielson said the flight attendants would have to carry enough cash to purchase groceries to prepare meals for customers while traveling. “If we were on the road and we were in a foreign country, we would have to go to the concierges to convert the money,” Danielson said.

U.S. Air Force Air Mobility Command, based at Scott Air Force Base, Illinois, had been looking for squadron liaisons to help develop a new system to eliminate the use of

cash. The 76th AS had been selected to lead the development for all bases in USAFE. “The new card system is similar to a government travel card. It can be

used off base in foreign countries,” Danielson said. “When crew members come back, they submit their receipts and are billed, and pay back what is owed.” Although the card system was created by AMC, the development and implementation of the program was done by Danielson. The 76th AS started the development around July 2016 and the first implementation of the system occurred with the 76th AS around Dec. 2016. By March 2017, all squadrons across USAFE had transitioned to the new program. Danielson said the program is up and running and she thinks it’s moving very smoothly. “I feel like it is very beneficial and it is helpful for all of our flight attendants,” Danielson said. The new innovation has become a standard Air Force wide. The 86th FSS Continuous Improvement Office and Innovation Program is always looking for innovative ways to streamline processes and increase cost saving for the Air Force. Anyone interested in submitting an innovative idea can contact Rebecca Porinsky at the 86th FSS Manpower Office at 480-4032 or 06371-47-4032. Advertisement

KMC spouse strengthens community ties; honored for German-American contributions Story and photo by Tech. Sgt. J. Smith 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs A Kaiserslautern Military Community spouse was honored for her contributions to local German and American communities by the Atlantic Academy, Sept. 30, during German-American Day 2017 in Ramstein-Miesenbach. Sugin Musgrave, Ramstein Military Spouse of the Year in 2014 and 2016, contributes her time and knowledge to support U.S. families who are adjusting to living in Germany. She provides education and information through blogs, videos, classes, field trips and Facebook pages, as well as her own personal website to help individuals prosper as members of their German communities. “A lot of volunteering is done behind the scenes,” said Musgrave. “When I see a need or problem I can help with, I help. I have assisted in making a guide for German landlords to give to Americans explaining everything I could think of that I did not know beforehand. Some examples of that are how to use and clean the dishwasher, heating, keeping my house cool, and using ovens and more.”

Sugin Musgrave, Kaiserslautern Military Community spouse, receives a certificate of appreciation from John Constance, left, Atlantic Academy project manager, and David Sirakov, right, director of Atlantische Akademie, in Ramstein-Miesenbach, Sept. 30. Musgrave contributed her time and knowledge to support U.S. families who were adjusting to living in Germany.

Musgrave uses her knowledge to help strengthen German-American community ties. “Musgrave is a very active member of the military community who is supporting fellow American families to get settled in the area quickly by providing a lot of information about various areas of life,”

said John Constance, Atlantic Academy project manager. “Her long-lasting and dedicated volunteer work is a textbook example of the impact everybody in the German and American community can have with his or her efforts to strengthen our GermanAmerican relationship and give back to the community.” Musgrave, a native of Detroit, volunteers to give back to the local communities while gaining self-fulfillment by simply helping others through their transition to Germany. “When I started, this was a hobby,” said Musgrave. “It was a way to help others not feel so scared and overwhelmed when they arrived here. I have learned how much the information I provided is needed by the communities. What has been given back to me are some amazing friendships. Meeting people who have been helped by my videos and blogs is awesome; it is really nice to know that I am helping so many.” When Musgrave and her husband, Master Sgt. James Musgrave, U.S. Air Forces in Europe command mishap reporting and traffic outreach manager, arrived in Germany, they were inundated with many unknowns about the

German way of life. “When our family first got to Germany I felt overwhelmed,” said Musgrave. “There was a spouse I met at the bus stop who helped me. She took me shopping off base and I learned a lot. She inspired me to help others with that and more,” Musgrave said. “There is so much to learn. It is hard to find the information in English or sometimes there is no information at all. If I can help one person not feel alone and overwhelmed, then it is all worth it.” There have been two occasions that stick out in Musgrave’s mind when she reflects on the times she has helped others. “On my KMC lost-andfound pets page, I helped reunite a lost cat with its owners who had moved back to the U.S.,” she said. “When the cat was recovered a few months later, it was flown home. “The other occasion was when a spouse stayed after one of my classes and thanked me for saving her marriage,” Musgrave said. “She explained in one of my videos I said, ‘if I can do it, you can do it.’ This gave her strength to work through their marital issues revolving around their recent PCS.” One of Musgrave’s key

pieces of advice to newcomers is to always ask questions. “Moving here is stressful, and not understanding all the new things in Germany adds to that stress, but don’t be afraid to ask for help,” she said. “There are many wonderful people to help both on and off base.” When Musgrave discovered she was being honored for her efforts, she was caught off guard. “My family is very proud and loves that I am being recognized for all of the hard work I have done,” she said. “Personally, I hope that being honored helps encourage other American spouses to reach out to German communities, helping to bridge the gap of sharing information that has major impacts on our daily life.” Musgrave has a big impact on local communities and she is appreciated by many. “I’m thankful to have met such a dedicated person committing a large portion of her free time to keep fellow American families not just informed but also safe during their stay in Germany,” said Constance. “She supports so many service members and their families and her far reaching, longstanding efforts are impressive.”

The show must go on

Staff Sgt. Joshua Montambeault, 86th Aerospace Medicine Squadron food safety non-commissioned officer in charge, dedicates hours of his time on stage as a local actor in the Kaiserslautern Military Community. Montambeault started acting at 15 years old when he was first stationed in Germany as an Army dependent. Since then, he has been awarded the 2015 Best Military Performance in a Play for his performance in “12 Angry Men,” as part of the Topper awards.

Story and photo by Senior Airman Devin Boyer 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Butterflies begin to invade their stomachs as they step foot on the battered floor. The smell of painted wood fills their nose and the heat of the spotlight touches their skin like a tanning bed. A geyser of adrenaline shoots through their body increasing their heart rate to an all-time high. The show is about to start and the actors and actresses can’t help but feel nervous, except for one individual among them. For Staff Sgt. Joshua Montambeault, stepping in front of a crowd is a soothing experience. By day he works in food safety for the 86th Aerospace Medicine Squadron, but by night he takes center stage. “I’m really not somebody that likes being in crowds of people, but up on stage is my safe spot,” said Montambeault. “So when I go up there, it’s a sense of calm, it’s a sense of relaxation. Where other people will go get a massage or sit in a hot tub, for me that’s what going up on stage is like.” Montambeault was a 15-year-old Army brat stationed in Germany when he discovered his love for the art. As a jock in high school with no control over his class

schedule, he was placed in a drama class. “I fell in love with it,” he said. “I fell in love with the kind of people in theater and I fell in love with the way the theater director brought the best out of people.” After the events of 9/11 Montambeault decided to join the Air Force, but his love for the stage never dissipated. He now invests hundreds of hours into theater. At one point, he was involved in four shows at once. Whether he’s prepping, starring in, or auditioning for a show, the actor stays busy. “I realized theater was not only fun, it was a lot of work – it was a challenge,” he said. “That work appealed to me.” For Montambeault, shedding blood, sweat, and tears provides him with great reward. “That moment when you get up on stage, you get into the character, the audience is loving it and you get that initial laughter, it’s better than any drug,” he said. “For whatever amount of time I’ve got them, they’re not worried about whatever it was they were worried about when they came in. They are feeling what we want them to feel. It’s an escape.” Not only does theater allow the people watching to escape their everyday stressors, but

Montambeault benefits from it too. “People who are stressed out get sick more, they get injured more and they’re much more likely to make mistakes,” he said. “Theater de-stresses me. While there is stress that goes with it, it is the kind of stress that makes you stronger. It makes you more passionate, it makes you more focused, and it allows me to give back to the community.” Although the stage may not seem like a dangerous place, incidents can happen. During one of his shows, the actor suffered a serious injury. “While I was coming out on stage, it was very dark and there was a lot of smoke from the smoke machine. While not paying attention to where I was going and being more concerned with getting out on stage, I slammed my head into a post. Then I went on and performed for the rest of the show.” This wasn’t the first time Montambeault took a hit to the head. In his last job on the flightline, he suffered from many head-on collisions. “The human body can only take so many concussions before it gets injured,” said Montambeault. “The brain plasticity, which is something they talk about at the traumatic brain injury clinic, is defi-

nitely helped by performing. By learning lines, by learning new things that you’ve never done before, you are working your mind and that makes your brain better. Working the

brain is like any other muscle and it makes it sharper, faster, more accurate.” After the head injury when people would ask him questions, Montambeault had to take a few minutes to answer them. Doing what he loves most has allowed him to rejuvenate. “Acting is getting me back into being able to react quickly and thoughtfully,” he said. After four years at Ramstein, Montambeault is getting ready to depart. “I just hope that the interest in the program stays up. I hope that new people coming in find the program and get involved in the community. You make some of the best friends you can ever have in your life because you go through a lot with them.” Montambeault’s next show will be “The Bremen Town Musicians: A Holiday Panto” at the Razzmatazz Theatre in the Ramstein Community Center on Ramstein Air Base, Germany. Shows will be Dec 1, 2, 8, 9 at 7 p.m., and Dec. 3 and 10 at 1 p.m. Tickets are $5 for children 5-12, and $7 for ages 13 and over.

7th MSC Soldiers join international partners in NATO exercise Story and photos by Capt. Jeku Arce 221st Public Affairs Detachment TUZLA, Bosnia and Herzegovina — U.S. Army Reserve Soldiers from 7th Mission Support Command participated in “Bosna I Hercegovina 2017” consequence management exercise led by NATO’s EuroAtlantic Disaster Response Coordination Centre, Sept. 24 to 29. Soldiers from 773rd Civil Support Team, 361st Civil Affairs Brigade, and Medical Support Unit-Europe represented U.S. forces from Europe with around 1,200 participants from 34 NATO and partnered countries in the exercise. 773rd CST provided chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear capabilities, a newly acquired top-of-the-line communications vehicle, and a TALON-tracked military robot used for CBRN operations. MSU-E provided three four-person medical teams that deployed throughout the exercise providing field triage and first aid.

“[‘Bosna I Hercegovina 2017’] is an excellent opportunity for our soldiers to get out and work with partnering nations and see more of the world. It opens their eyes,” said Col. Daniel Bohmer, 7th MSC Task Force Commander at EADRCC, who works as a civilian nuclear pharmacist in Moorhead, Minnesota. The intent of the exercise is to strengthen the host nation’s capacity to effectively coordinate international disaster response operations. Bosnia and Herzegovina was devastated with floods and landslides in 2014. A NATO civilian team recommended training activities and civil-military international exercises to help the host nation deal with future geological and environmental challenges. Participants worked together during a two-day, real-time field training exercise here and in the vicinity. Scenarios included water search and rescue, casualties trapped in a collapsed building, chemical spills, landmine incidents, industrial fires, and flash floods. Capt. Dino De La Hoya, 773rd CST operations officer in charge, believes the civil-

military relationship requires continuous involvement. “[Joint] training helps relationship building so you understand each others’ abilities,” said De La Hoya, “When you’re getting to that handshake/first-name level, you know you’re doing good things,” referring to seeing familiar faces at “Bosna I Hercegovina 2017” from participating in EADRCC’s “Crna Gora 2016” in Montenegro. “Trust and how you relate with others are factors in our readiness to position ourselves in an event of an actual disaster,” he added. Sgt. Pattisue Graham, practical nurse specialist with MSU-E who works at Kleber Health Clinic in Kaiserslautern as a civilian, realized through joint medical training at “Bosna I Hercegovina 2017” that medical practices are similar across the partnered countries. “I assumed there would be more differences among the medical practices but after talking with [partnered nation’s medical teams] and going over scenarios there’s less differences than I first thought.”

Wetzel teens earn highest Keystone Club level by Mary Ann Davis U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz Public Affairs WETZEL KASERNE, Germany — Wetzel Keystone Club members demonstrated outstanding leadership and character during several communityenhancing events throughout the year, earning them the Legacy Keystone Charter, which is the top level in Boys & Girls Clubs of America. Keystone Clubs are BGCA programs that are found all over the world, focusing on teen academic success, career preparation and community service, said Ryan Flynn, Wetzel Teen Program assistant director and Keystone Club adviser for the Baumholder Military Community. “Keystone is a premier leadership club for youth 14 to 18,” Flynn explained. “At Wetzel Teen Center, we have about 280 teens enrolled, and we get anywhere between 90 and 120 stopping by the center per day. Between sports and after school activities, kids today are pulled in so many directions. So, I’m happy to get as many members as we can to participate.” The Keystone Club program, founded in 1964, was designed to produce and sustain high standards of character and citizenship in youth to help them develop and become responsible, productive adults in today’s world. With the support and guidance of club staff, they are provided opportunities to make leadership decisions, be involved in intellectual and career experiences, while serving others. “From my perspective, to be a leader is to effect positive change,” Flynn said. “What I try to do with this club is get teens out there doing positive things within our community, whether it’s small acts like cleaning up areas

of the installation or helping raise donations for wounded warriors, it gives them ways to become leaders by providing assistance within our community.” To get to the top level, Wetzel Keystone Club members completed a series of charters throughout the years — silver, gold and finally the Legacy Keystone Charter, Flynn said. “To achieve the legacy level, your club has to achieve the gold level two years in a row,” he said. “So they really had to put in some time and effort to make it all happen. It was a labor of love for us to get through two years of gold to get to the legacy level, and I’m very proud of what they’ve accomplished.” Club advisors also take members to local colleges and universities for College Night and assist them with college applications and scholarships, Flynn said. All the community service and volunteer work performed throughout the year is helpful when applying for higher education entrance as well. For Timur K., being the Keystone Club president is both challenging and rewarding. “Planning and organizing events can be difficult, since you are required to meet certain charters,” the 16-year-old said. “But there are usually more than enough people who volunteer to help out, so it makes the events go smoothly. We did a small community service event Monday, where we cleaned the skate park. We had several Keystone members and other volunteers helping to make sure it is a safe and clean environment for people to enjoy.” Future volunteer events include working with Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation for a Halloween event and sponsoring

a barbecue for the military police, Timur said. “It’s a great opportunity. Not only does it help with getting necessary volunteer hours for high school and college, it also helps build character,” he said. “It’s a nice feeling to be out there in the community and be a part of things that are bigger than yourself and your group of friends. It helps with your leadership skills, which is something colleges look for, but most of all — it’s fun.” Tiara M., a Keystone Club member for more than a year, is following her brother’s footsteps. “My brother was the president last year,” said the 17-year-old. “He would tell me all about Keystone and the events they were doing, so I wanted to try it.” Her brother Hunter, a freshman at the University of Dubuque, became a stronger, more social person because of the club, and it has helped her as well, Tiara said. “I’m not a very social person, but when I joined, I met a lot of great people. So, if you want to get out and make new friends, this is definitely the place,” she said. “There’s no judgement here. We all get to voice our opinions and not get criticized. I enjoy this club, and it makes me feel great to be a part of it.” Fellow Keystone member, Zeth J. was “interested in helping the community and getting volunteer hours toward college,” he said. “I had a friend that wanted me to join, so he told me all about it and the activities. The program helped me to become more vocal and participate in community events.” Out of all the club projects he’s worked on over the past two years,

Zeth said he liked barbecuing food and playing a few games of basketball with 50-60 military police officers. “I thought that was a great idea because of everything that was happening with the police in the States,” the 16-year-old said. “We got to build positive relationships with the military police by grilling and playing basketball together. It was a really great time.” To find out more about the Wetzel Teen Center and its programs, call 485-6810 or 6323 or at 06783-6-6810 or 6323.

Burning the midnight oil to make every dollar count by 2nd Lt. Alicia Binggeli 700th Contracting Squadron For many Airmen, the end of the fiscal year doesn’t mean much. For the 700th Contracting Squadron, and our close partners in the financial community, it’s game seven of the World Series. We’ve put in the ground work all year, had some smaller victories here and there, maybe a few setbacks, but this is when we step up to the plate and into overdrive. It’s the time of year when we make it all count. During the fiscal year, the 86th Airlift Wing and its tenant units receive funding to operate and complete their critical mission sets. The Air Force is not entirely organic nor self-sufficient so we must make purchases and establish contracts for products and services to help us get the job done. Based on our government’s fiscal law and cycle, the money that’s distributed for these purposes must be spent by the stroke of

midnight on 30 September. This is when 700 CONS performs its magic! In fiscal year 2017, 700 CONS was able to put $90 million worth of supplies, services, and construction on contract. Through sound business practices and planning with customers, we executed $32 million in September alone. Each dollar the base gets certainly goes to support the mission and operation of the installation, but it does so in ways that benefit nearly all personnel across the greater Kaiserslautern Military Community as well. What does that mean for the greater Team Ramstein? Well, let us give you a few examples: The base command post is a central point for Ramstein’s operations, providing everything from weather updates to base warnings, and so much more. The ability to communicate effectively with other team members in time of peace or emergency is a critical necessity for them. Our Commodities Flight was able to

secure a much needed upgrade for communications equipment ensuring that the command post can do their part to keep the rest of us safe and secure. The commodities flight was also responsible for the purchase of USAFE’s first combat aircraft fire rescue trainer which will be used by multiple units to sharpen their life-saving skills. 700 CONS put their business skills to good use and was able to secure the trainer for $250 thousand less than initially anticipated. Our Construction Flight spent nearly $6 million on upgrading aging fire alarm systems in housing units, hangars, visitor quarters, the library, and many more facilities across RAB to keep all our team members and families safe. They’re also responsible for contracting the renovation taking place in a section of the Enlisted Club. All that effort is going to provide the perfect spot for the very first P.F. Chang’s on an Air Force Installation. So, get your taste buds ready for an opening in the near future!

The Government Purchase Card program provides charge cards to nearly every unit. This program is entirely aimed at making it easier for units to buy smaller dollar value items that help them with their everyday jobs. Our Programs and Policy Flight is the home of USAFE’s #1 GPC program which, in FY17, was able to complete 27,791 actions valued at $29.9 million! While the timeliness of spending is very important at this time of year, the main concentration of effort is to meet critical mission needs, promote beneficial long-term community impacts, and enhance the future of airpower. What 700 CONS accomplished this year was the result of a team effort made possible by our partners at the 86th Comptroller Squadron, our Resource Advisors, and a multitude of our KMC customers. We extend a big thank you to everyone who played a role in making FY17 and End of Year closeout a success. We’re confident we will make FY18 even better!

‘Show some love’ to charities by donating to CFC by Mary Davis U.S. Army Garrison RheinlandPfalz Public Affairs The Combined Federal Campaign celebrates its 56th year of federal workplace charitable giving, and every year, federal employees dig deep in their pockets to give to those in need all over the world. This year’s campaign, “Show Some Love,” continues that commitment to giving by providing people an opportunity to make positive changes through donations from Oct. 16 – Dec. 15. The CFC-Overseas season kicks off in Rheinland-Pfalz with its fourth annual Army vs. Air Force CFC-O Bubble Soccer Match, at 1:30 p.m., Oct. 16, at Vogelweh Fitness Center Soccer Field. People can show some love for CFC and root for their favorite team. “CFC allows you to donate to multiple charities at once, and if you want to remain anonymous, donating through the CFC is the easiest way to do that,” said Melissa Malakos, U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz Kaiserslautern CFC-O Community Area Project officer. “Supporting those causes that are important to you is a great way to voice your opinion and support change.” Her involvement in CFC began in 1999, when Malakos began federal service. Eighteen years later, she has become more involved in the program and witnessed CFC evolve and grow.

“Several changes were made to this year’s campaign. The most exciting change for me is the ability to pledge volunteer hours as well as funds. If a charity indicated they would like to receive volunteer support, donors can pledge the hours they plan to volunteer for the upcoming year. Here overseas, there are charities that welcome volunteers,” said Malakos, a native of Dilltown, Pennsylvania. “Also, if you know you will be heading back to the States next year, it’s a chance to let your chosen charity know that you will be available to support them.” Volunteering at local charities can provide useful work experience, helps people network and can instill pride, loyalty and engagement with these organizations, she added. The total number of volunteer hours and its monetary value can be shared with these agencies at the conclusion of the campaign, although they aren’t counted toward agency goals. Charities accepting volunteers will be marked with an identifying symbol. Another change is a centralized Giving Portal where people can securely make their pledges online in November. The one-stop, userfriendly donation system includes state-of-the-art security standards to safeguard personal information,

making contributions only a click away next month. Jim Gillis, Baumholder CFC-O Community Area Project officer, has been involved with CFC for more than 20 years, and said people can contribute by “volunteering time or money to a favorite locally-listed, stateside or international charity from around the globe.” According to cfcoverseas.org, federal employees have the opportunity to give to any participating CFC charity, not just the local charities in their CFC zone. This option to support thousands of organizations allows donors to give to causes like health care, medical research, disaster relief, housing, youth development and more, regardless of geographic location. “This program is an opportunity to link our Baumholder community with some great charities, and in the process, educate the next generation of CFC leaders,” Gillis said. Malakos agreed with Gillis and said, “Aside from the charities that receive the support provided, I think it helps to spread good will through the community. There is a good feeling that comes with donating and that gets passed on as well.” This year, CFC no longer accepts cash donations and units can no longer hold CFC fundraisers like bake sales or car washes, but that

won’t hamper people’s spirit of giving, Gillis said. “People will choose organizations they can relate to and give from the heart,” said Gillis from South Bend, Indiana. Gillis grew up on a dairy farm and spent his youth milking and caring for cows as a part of his daily chores. In school, he was also involved in the 4-H Club, where he raised heifers for showing. “When I gave to CFC for the first time, I studied the charities list and found one that I connected with that provided calves to communities in third-world countries,” he said. “ I thought this would be the best charity for me because I know how hard farming is firsthand. I know these communities can raise the animals to help farm the land and provide milk. I donate to this charity every year because it means a lot to me.” He shares his CFC story with people as an icebreaker to get people thinking and talking about charitable organizations they can connect with. “CFC has thousands of charities to choose from. What charity means something to you? What is your CFC story going to be?” he asked. For more information, call Malakos (Kaiserslautern) at 5414702 or at 0611-143-541-4702 or Gillis (Baumholder) at 531-3008 or at 06111-43531-3008. Motorists must watch out for dangers on streets in fall

In fall, motorists must be very careful while driving in fog and on wet leaves.

by Petra Lessoing 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Motorists must be extremely careful now during fall and be aware of additional dangers on the streets. There is fog, black ice, wet leaves.and deer passing. Automobile club and Polizei officials give recommendations on how to get safely through the third season. Whenever there is dense fog, a general rule is to slow down, drive even more care-

fully, and always have the lights turned on. • Adjust speed to range of sight. If visibility is only 50 meters ahead, don’t drive faster than 50 kilometers per hour. If it is 100 meters, don’t drive faster than 80 kph, and if visibility is 150 meters, don’t drive faster than 100 kph. • Focus on the safety poles, not the center stripes. The poles on the right side always have rectangular reflectors, and those on the left have two round reflectors. The den-

sity of fog can be estimated by the distance of those safety poles. On regular roads, the distance between two poles is 25 meters and on the autobahn it’s 50 meters. A reduced speed during bad visibility or while driving through forests is also needed for another reason: with less daylight wild animals get active later in the morning and earlier at night. If animals suddenly appear, motorists should brake immediately, turn down the lights

and blow the horn. They should not swerve and lose control. On streets with deer crossing traffic signs, drivers should drive in a cautious and anticipating way. If a collision with animals happens, warning lights must be turned on and the vehicle has to be secured. Injured persons should be taken care of and the police have to be called. The animal should not be touched. Foxes can be infected with rabies and deer, appearing unconscious, can be dangerous. It’s considered poaching if someone takes the deer and puts it in the trunk. This results in the confiscation of the vehicle and a fine. In bad cases, a prison sentence of up to five years is possible. Car owners need a written confirmation by the police or the game lessee so the comprehensive insurance will pay for the damage. The game lessee is based on ani-

mal protection laws obliged to find an animal that got hit and hurt, and put it out of its misery. Autumn usually brings the first black ice, which calls for special attention. The same applies to wet leaves; roads get slippery. Also, after harvest agricultural vehicles make the roads dirty with clay and clods of earth, dangerous situations might happen, especially for motorcyclists. Mud and clumps in combination with moistness can result in slippery street surfaces. Heavy winds or storms can cause another danger. Drivers should adjust their speed, be careful when passing trucks or busses, and watch for signs on bridges and in forest aisles. Officials also recommend not to park under trees when it’s very windy or stormy. branches might fall onto cars and damage them badly.

Yorktown Day Celebration takes place in Homburg Courtesy of Saarpfalz County information office The German American Institute Saarland and the Saarpfalz County will sponsor the Battle of Yorktown Day celebration at 7 p.m. Oct. 20 in the Homburg town hall, Am Forum 1. The event will include a talk and a reception.

Yorktown is the place of the final battle of the soldiers of the colonies on the American continent against the British mother country. On Oct. 19, 1781, independence was won with significant support from soldiers from the border region of Saarland and Palatinate serving in the “Régiment Royal Deux-Ponts.” Stationed

in and around Homburg and Zweibruecken, the regiment was sent to the American continent via various stations in order to support the colonies in their struggle for independence against the British. During the night of Oct. 14, “Redoute No. 9,” a central position of defence of the British, was overrun by

the regiment commanded by Christian von Zweybruecken, the Count of Forbach. Thus, the regiment, together with the French army, forced the British General Cornwallis to surrender. Organizers would like to honor the historical connection between the USA and the border region of Saarland and Palatinate and the town of Forbach, a town just across the border in France, with a day of commemoration. Dr. Theophil Gallo, Saarpfalz County commissioner, will welcome the guests, and James W. Herman, U.S. Consul General in Frankfurt, will provide an opening speech. Klaus Friedrich will then talk about, “Off to America! — The glorious adventures of the GermanFrench infantry regiment Royal Deux-Ponts during the War of Independence. Musical entertainment

by the Palatina Washboard Jassband and a social gathering with drinks and snacks will follow. Guests of this GermanAmerican event will have the opportunity to talk to people, make new friends, and enjoy the friendship. The exhibition, “Remembering the past … Building bridges to the future,” with historical images of the “War of Independence” and “Battle of Yorktown” will support the celebration program. Information booths will be available to provide material on cultural and touristic activities in Saarland and Zweibruecken.

Long before he sat on the United States Supreme Court or claimed victory in Brown v. Board of Education, Thurgood Marshall was a young rabble-rousing attorney for the NAACP. The new motion picture, "Marshall," is the true story of his greatest challenge in those early days — a fight he fought alongside attorney Sam Friedman, a young lawyer with no experience in criminal law: the case of black chauffeur Joseph Spell, accused by his white employer, Eleanor Strubing, of sexual assault and attempted murder.
