Revitalizing squadrons: Deliberately develop superintendents Story and photos by Airman D. Blake Browning 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Chief Master Sgt. Phillip L. Easton, U.S. Air Forces in Europe and U.S. Air Forces Africa command chief master sergeant, hosted a five-day USAFEAFAFRICA Squadron Superintendent and Spouse course, Sept. 24 to 27 at the USAFE Conference Center on Ramstein Air Base. “Superintendents have always existed in our organization, but now we’re focusing on the Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. David L. Goldfein’s priority of revitalizing squadrons,” said Senior Master Sgt. Robert Ybay, 1st Air Communications Operations Squadron superintendent. “In order to build that bench of leadership within the unit, commanders go through their squadron commander’s course and first sergeants go through their first sergeant academy, but there really wasn’t a See REVITALIZING SQUADRONS, Page 2

Easton, U.S. Air Forces in Europe and U.S. Air Forces Africa command chief master sergeant, presents a briefing on the role of a squadron superintendent at the USAFE-AFAFRICA Squadron Superintendent and Spouse course at the USAFE conference center on Ramstein Air Base, Sept. 25. During the course, superintendents were able to panel current squadron superintendents, meet with senior mentors, and also network among one another.

Flu vaccine community events scheduled for KMC by Stacy M. Sanning Regional Health Command Europe Fall is officially here and the colder temperatures usher in the annual flu season. The flu vaccine is expected to arrive soon so the Army and Air Force medical teams have scheduled numerous vaccination events throughout the Kaiserslautern Military Community. Due to delays caused by Hurricane Florence, scheduled event dates could change depending on when the vaccine arrives in Germany. Changes to the scheduled events will be shared

on official social media for Landstuhl Regional Medical Center, Kleber Health Clinic, Baumholder Health Clinic and Ramstein 86th Medical Group. Everyone who can, should, especially if pregnant Army and Air Force health professionals recommend the flu vaccine for everyone ages six months and older to prevent getting the flu or reducing the severity and duration of symptoms. According to the Center for Disease Control, vaccination is especially

important for pregnant women, who have a higher risk of severe symptoms and hospitalization. Mothers’ immunity also helps protect their babies, who cannot be vaccinated until they reach six months. “Getting vaccinated is the first and most important step in protecting against the flu,” said Chief of Army Public Health Nursing for Landstuhl Regional Medical Center Lt. Col. Timothy Whoolery. “The flu is the most dangerous for infants, the elderly, pregnant women and people with health complications. Everyone who

can be vaccinated, really needs to get vaccinated, for themselves and to prevent the flu from spreading to those in the community at the most risk.” Vaccines for patients five years and older are expected to arrive first, with pediatric vaccines for children between six months and four years old expected later in October. To build community immunity, the flu vaccine will be offered to military, Department of Defense civilians, retirees and families. In addition, See FLU VACCINE, Page 3

Page 2 REVITALIZING SQUADRONS from Page 1 deliberate development or training for squadron superintendents.” Recognizing the need for training, the superintendent and spouse course was created. “The squadron is the heartbeat of our United States Air Force,” said Easton. “It’s where everything begins and ends; so as we’re going through revitalizing our squadrons, it’s important to make sure that they have the tools to be successful.” Forty-five superintendents and nine spouses, to include two members from joint services, as well as a coalition partner, attended the course geared toward superintendents who have been in the position less than a year and those who have been vectored toward the job. “The spouse side of the course was meant to guide, educate, and mentor spouses of selected superintendents,” said Senior Master Sgt. Cornelia Crawford, 86th Operations Support Squadron superintendent. “They were given briefs to educate them on some of the information they might not have been privy to, prior to being in this type of position.” Conversely, the superintendent side

of the course educated attendees on what to expect once they’re in the position along with providing some tools one might need as a squadron superintendent. Some of the tools the superintendents were briefed on included resource management, manpower, the key spouse program, and leadership perspective. “How do you revitalize a squadron?,” asked Ybay. “You do it by revitalizing the leaders within that squadron and make sure that they have the tools they need to lead the Airmen.” During the course, superintendents were able to panel current squadron superintendents, meet with senior mentors, and also network among one another. “The networking within the course, I find is one of the key pieces,” said Crawford. “The same way you have superintendents who’ve already been in the seat for up to a year, there are some spouses who’ve been key spouses or spouse mentors. So having a course like this allows the opportunity for networking and mentorship.” Beside the superintendents, the spouses were also able to tour the base dining facility, deployment transition

center, Landstuhl Regional Medical Center, United Service Organizations, the Fisher House, and also some of the Airmen’s living quarters. Crawford added, prior to the tours a lot of the spouses were unaware of the services that were available throughout the KMC. The tours also stand as a way to expose the spouses to our Airmen’s way of life. As a squadron superintendent team, especially from a key spouse side, it is very important to see what Airmen go through daily. Although the USAFE-AFAFRICA

Squadron Superintendent and Spouse course had two separate objectives, the constant theme of the course circled around the aspect of team. “It’s really one course,” said Ybay. “It’s not solely geared towards superintendents or spouses. It’s about the effort of that superintendent team. There will be late nights, a lot of overtime, and a lot of things that a spouse needs to understand and this course provides that because it’s a team effort going forward as a squadron superintendent.”

DoD civilians and their families should not have any out of pocket costs, however their health insurance companies will be billed directly so they should bring a copy of a current health insurance card. For many people, annual vaccination is a requirement and not a recommendation. This includes military service members, healthcare workers, school-age children, as well as childcare facility employees and attendees. Air Force begins transition of hospitals, clinics to Defense Health Agency by Air Force Surgeon General Public Affairs The Defense Health Agency officially assumed administrative and management responsibilities of a handful of hospitals and clinics as part of the Military Health System reforms mandated by Congress. The transition of the facilities is part of a phased implementation plan developed by DHA and Services medical departments that started Oct. 1. Congress enacted these changes to create a more integrated, efficient, and effective system of readiness and healthcare that best supports patients and the Department of Defense. Air Force hospital and clinics transitioning under the DHA’s direct management during the first phase include: the 43rd Medical Squadron at Pope Field, North Carolina; the 81st Medical Group at Keesler Air Force Base, Mississippi;

Retiree Appreciation Day by Airman 1st Class Kaylea Berry 86 Airlift Wing Public Affairs The 86th Airlift Wing Retiree Activities Office invites members of the Kaiserslautern Militar y Community to celebrate Retiree Appreciation Day at the Ramstein Officer’s Club on Ramstein Air Base, Oct. 18, starting at 9:30 a.m. All military retirees, dependents, and family members are invited to attend. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. and a light breakfast will be served. Maj. Kristin L. Ka’auamo, U.S. Air Forces Europe and Air Forces Af rica standardization and evaluation chief, said the purpose of Retiree Appreciation Day is to show appreciation for and take care of our retirees and veterans, as well as to get information out. “It’s a good platform for

information sharing about TRICARE changes that have come down over the year, including vision and dental.” Ka’auamo said. “We also do f ree dental care which I think is one of the things people look forward to the most since they can’t come on base regularly. There are a couple WWII veterans that will be there this year. It’s a great opportunity even for the younger volunteers to be able to give a personal thank you to people.” The event will consist of guest speakers, information tables, raffles, a C-130J Super Hercules aircraft tour and more. To RSVP you can email the 86th Airlift Wing Retiree Activities Office at 86aw.rao@us.af.mil. For any questions, contact the Retiree Activities Office at 480-5486, commercially at 06371-475486 or by email.

2021. “From a patient perspective, most of these changes should go unnoticed,” said Navy Vice-Adm. Raquel C. “Rocky” Bono, DHA director. “Patients can expect the same high-quality, trust-

ed care they have come to know at our military treatment facilities. Providers can expect to focus on practicing medicine and maintaining their preparedness in the event of crisis.” DHA will be responsible

for budgetary matters, information technology, healthcare administration and management, administrative policy and procedure, and military medical infrastructure at all MTFs. The Services will retain responsibility for operational mission support and recruiting, organizing, training and equipping medical Airmen. “Readiness will stay job number one,” said Lt. Gen. Dorothy Hogg, Air Force Surgeon General. “Increased integration with the DHA and the Services will strengthen our readiness, narrow our focus on operational medicine, and enhance our support to the warfighter.” The next phase of integration will be comprised of hospitals and clinics in the Eastern United States and should be complete by Oct. 1, 2019. Subsequent phases include hospitals and clinics in the Western United States followed by overseas medical facilities.

Meet the 86 AW’s new command chief Story and photo by Staff Sgt. Nesha Humes Stanton 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Chief Master Sergeant Ernesto J. Rendon, Jr. serves as the Command Chief Master Sergeant for the 86th Airlift Wing at Ramstein Air Base. As the senior enlisted leader, Rendon provides counsel to the commander and senior leadership on military readiness, mission effectiveness, professional development, morale, welfare, training, and good order and discipline of the wing’s 8,000 personnel. Prior to assuming his current position, he served as the Command Chief for the 48th Fighter Wing at RAF Lakenheath, England. The 86th AW Public Affairs office sat down with Chief Rendon and discussed his leadership style, how his mentors shaped his career, and the importance of being present in our professional and personal lives. Q: What are your priorities as you assume this leadership role here at Ramstein? A: First, I’d say it’s important our priorities are always focused on our Airmen. Right now, by the nature of where we’re operating in this theatre, we must be mission ready. Readiness means we’re prepared to defend the base, be mission ready and be able to operate under any environment. Every Airman, from the person who just arrived out of basic training, to our oldest Airmen must be ready to execute his or her role. So, that’s why Brig. Gen. August and I are focused on making sure that our Airmen are equipped, trained and ready to execute our mission and to fight our nation’s wars. Q: What are your goals during your time at the 86th Airlift Wing? A: I think the ultimate goal is to stay ready to contribute to the execution of our COCOMs responsibility by providing airlift as the premier airlift wing in the world while still making sure we’re taking care of one another. Q: Looking at your Bio, we see you have served all over from Texas to Japan, Qatar, Washington, Turkey, England and this will be your fourth tour in Germany. How have those assignments prepared you for your new position? A: I’m a big believer in development. Ultimately, we all gain experiences every day, and all of those

assignments brought different challenges and different opportunities that I think helped prepare me for this role. I learned from experience, how important it is to slow down and live in the moment so you’re best prepared for the next challenge. I began my career as a Port Dawg operating on the flightline in Germany at Rhein Main Air Base. I continued to do some development special duty jobs in tech training and also as a first sergeant. The funny thing I learned later that I didn’t understand at the time, was how those assignments and units gave me a perspective that I benefited from professionally and personally. I got a perspective that I don’t know I would have received, had I not had the career path that I did. Ultimately, I think all those opportunities came because, 1)I was willing to say ‘Yes,’ when someone tapped me on the shoulder and said “Hey Ernie, I think this is a good opportunity for you.” And, 2) I stepped out of my comfort zone in many of those assignments. I was rewarded with the opportunity to grow, learn, and develop in ways I would have never imagined. Now I have the opportunity to give some of that back to those Airmen coming after me. Q: What thoughts went through your mind when you found out you were coming back to Ramstein to serve as the Command Chief for the 86th Airlift Wing? A: I was excited. It was bittersweet. To have the opportunity to come back to Ramstein as the Command Chief is special. It will be the highlight of my career; my family and I are pretty excited. Melissa [my wife] and I are

ready to make a positive impact here. Q: What would you like the men and women of the 86th Airlift Wing to know about your leadership style? A: I am a pretty collaborative guy. When I was coming through the ranks, I valued having folks explain the ‘why’ to me. Early on, I struggled some, I questioned things often— really often. If something didn’t make sense to me I’d always want to ask ‘Why are we doing this?,’ ‘Why does it matter?’ I thought I knew a better way to do it and I wanted people to listen to me. That’s shaped how I’ve always been and how I operate today. I work really hard to collaborate with group chiefs to come up with what makes the most sense as an organization and for the Airmen who are counting on us. I think the best way to come up with a solution is to collaborate with a team and receive all those inputs, then work to find the solution. Then, communicating that down to the lowest level is the next important thing. We need to be able to communicate to folks why they’re doing things and why those things matter. Q: Who were your most influential mentors and what did they teach you? A: My mom was the first real mentor I’ve had, she’s the real reason I’m here today. We weren’t wealthy, in fact we got by mostly when I was very young. She always taught me the value of working hard and being dedicated to the people you care about the most, the value of faith, and she kept me in line when I was starting to stray. My wife and I joined the Air Force together in October 1992, she has been by my side throughout my entire

career. I owe who I’ve become to her, she’s kept me very grounded. Later in my career, as a young first sergeant at Yokota Air Base, my Command Chief, Chief Master Sergeant Linus Jordan was a perfect model of what being a senior enlisted leader is all about. He made time for everybody. When you were in his presence you were the only thing that mattered, he knew exactly how to make you feel important, and he would go out of his way to make sure he was looking out for everyone. There are a lot of other people throughout my life and my career who have been influential, but those are some key personnel who’ve shaped me at moments when it mattered most. Q: What are some of your hobbies? A: I like spending time with my wife, since my kids are adults living on their own, and I play golf on a fairly regular basis. We also enjoy reading and traveling. In this job, you do a lot of talking with people. So, spending quiet moments with friends and family are what help me recharge my batteries. Q: You’ve stated “Self-care is the most critical piece of resiliency.” What kind of self-care do you feel is important or practice yourself? A: Unfortunately, as humans we don’t have sight-gauges so it can be difficult to see when someone’s resilience has been depleted. It’s so important to understand how you decompress and what gives you peace of mind. I’ve spent my Air Force career doing what makes me happy, and I make sure to enjoy time with family and friends. I recommend everyone figures out how to unplug, know what causes undue stress and what gives you joy. Q: What would you do differently if given the opportunity? A: I would do all the same things, except I’d focus a little more on relationships with people. One of the things I’ve taken away from the retirement ceremonies I’ve been to is what really matters in the end is the people you’ve had these experiences with. I really get that now and I wish I would have figured that out as a younger Staff Sergeant. I spent too many of my early years focused on what’s next, because as I look back I see I’ve had the chance to do some really cool stuff. I think back to operations we contributed to as young guys and I wish I would have taken more time to enjoy with the folks around me.

Ramstein celebrates Diversity Day

Kaiserslautern Military Community members speak with U.S. Air Force Brig. Gen. Mark R. August, 86th Airlift Wing commander at the 86th AW’s Diversity Day on Ramstein Air Base, Sept. 28. The event aimed to enhance cross-cultural and cross-gender awareness while promoting harmony among all military members, their families, and the Department of Defense civilian workforce.

Story and photos by Staff Sgt. Nesha Humes Stanton 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Equal opportunity offices from the U.S. Army 7th Mission Support Command, the 86th Airlift Wing, Defense Logistics Agency, and the Diversity Council from the University of Maryland University College collaborated together to host the 86th AW’s Diversity Day, Sept. 28. U.S. Air Force Brig. Gen. Mark R. August, 86th AW commander, opened the event stating diversity is a strength for our community. “By our very nature, we are unique, we are diverse,” August said. “We bring a perspective to this organization, to our base, to our community that no one else has. Our backgrounds, our experience and our training is what makes us who we are — diverse by nature. As I look out in this crowd of our amazing Airmen in the 86th AW and across the KMC, I see something a little bit different as well,” August continued. “Courage does not have a gender, leadership is not bound by race, honor and our dedication to country is certainly not bounded at all by our ethnicity.” The event, themed “Share our Similarities, Celebrate our Differences,” showcased a Frederick Douglass monologue, two spoken-word poets, a native hula dance, and a traditional praise dance performed by community members throughout the four-hour event. U.S. Air Force Tech. Sgt. Carl Zahn, 86th Dental Squadron dental laboratory

technician, and a Diversity Day volunteer said everybody has something that they can provide that’s unique to the mission, unit, or an interesting experience from their lives. “It’s good to leverage those things at the end of the day,” Zahn said. “It’s really important, we can’t just view the world through our own microscope. We need to be able to broaden our views to see how other people view the world and see their experiences.” In order to give attendees a world view, Diversity Day offered an array of cultural cuisines for attendees to eat and educational observance stands of trivia games and freebies. The event recognized 10 special observances to include: African American/ Black History; Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender Pride Month; National American Indian Heritage Month, Hispanic Heritage Month, Women’s History Month; Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month; National Disability Employment Awareness Month; Holocaust Remembrance Day; Martin Luther King Jr. Birthday; and Women’s Equality Day. Some of the ways the Air Force identifies diversity are personal life experiences, race, culture, spiritual perspectives, socioeconomic status, cognitive, behavioral and occupational skills. The event’s goal was to enhance cross-cultural and cross-gender awareness while promoting harmony among military members, their families, and the Department of Defense civilian workforce.

700th Contracting Squadron: Virtually no corner left untouched by 2nd Lt. Elizabeth Park 700th Contracting Squadron For a few Ramstein Airmen, the last few days of September proved to be filled with long working hours, late nights and energy drinks. Why is that? Well, the fiscal year ended on Sept. 30 and represented closeout of the Department of Defense’s 2018 budget. For the 700th Contracting Squadron, 86th Comptroller Squadron, unit resource advisors and government purchase card holders, it was the last big push to award contracts and use the GPC to fulfill requirements before the stroke of midnight on Sept. 30. You can liken it to the “Superbowl.” It was a true team effort to complete a game-winning drive and score a successful fiscal year 2018 closeout! So, you may ask, how do organizations on Ramstein use their funds and how do they support the 86th Airlift Wing’s mission? I’m glad you asked! In FY18, 700th CONS executed $92 million on contracts for commodities, services, and construction requirements. Here are a few examples of how we supported missions of the 86th AW and other Kaiserslautern Military Community mission partners: Our commodities flight teamed with U.S. Air Forces in Europe’s Warrior Preparation Center’s Air Ground Operations School to purchase a multimillion dollar Joint Terminal Attack Controller-Tactical Air Control Party Specialist/Operational Simulation Suite ( J-T/OSS). This state of the art simulator will enable close air support operations training for 120 U.S. and NATO JTACs, increasing their readiness and lethality. Not only does the commodi-

ties team support our warfighters with contracts such as J-T/OSS, they are responsible for purchasing equipment such as the computers and office furniture your units use every day. Also, they awarded 225 contracts valued at $28 million in FY18. The services flight also has huge impact. As the largest services acquisition flight in USAFE, they manage over 50 contracts valued at $125 million. In FY18, the services flight established contracts supporting chaplain services, wing safety, and medical care such as nurses, physicians, and TRICARE operations. In July, the services flight awarded a custodial services contract that provides cleaning support for buildings in the KMC area, Spangdahlem Air Base, and units on NATO Air Base Geilenkirchen. Through this strategic sourcing initiative to combine services for three locations under one contract, they saved USAFE $500K. Their efforts were recognized by the Air Force Installation Contracting Agency with the Enterprise Sourcing Excellence award! You may have noticed the new P.F. Chang’s restaurant in the Ramstein

Enlisted Club. In coordination with the 86th Force Support Squadron and 86th Civil Engineering Squadron, the construction flight finalized contract details and delivered the DoD’s first P.F. Chang’s that will feed 350K patrons per year! The construction flight also partnered with 86th CES to establish projects for repairing and maintaining military family housing, dorms, fitness centers, sports fields and playgrounds. Executing a $44 million civil engineering budget made for a busy FY18 in the construction flight. 700th CONS Plans and Programs flight (a.k.a. “P-Flight”) manages the largest GPC program in U.S. Air Forces Europe and Air Forces Africa. Our GPC team supports the 86th AW, and other organizations to include the 435th Air Ground Operations Wing and 435th Air Expeditionary Wing, 521st Air Mobility Operations Wing, Third Air Force, and the USAFE-AFAFRICA staff. More than 27,000 card swipes valued at $36 million streamlined purchasing operations across the globe. P-Flight is also responsible for diligent management of our contract writing system and

56 contracting officer representatives (i.e., quality assurance inspectors). As you can see, there is virtually no corner on Ramstein Air Base and the KMC that 700th CONS has not touched. We extend a huge thank you to you, our customer, for a successful fiscal year closeout. Your willingness to become educated on acquisition processes through “Contracting 101,” our customer education initiative, paid big dividends in FY18. Your responsiveness to our processes and timelines resulted in a 20 percent reduction in returned purchase request and more efficient spending in the third and fourth quarters. Going into Sept. 1, 2018, we were $12 million ahead of our execution on Sept. 1, 2017. Let’s keep this momentum going! 700th CONS will continue to accommodate your Contracting 101 needs in FY19. Contact us at 489-8408 to schedule training at a time and location that works best for you. With your help, we’ll continue building better business strategies and stronger relationships to support the “World’s Best Wing” and our mission partners. Happy New Fiscal Year!

Cost of Living Allowance living pattern survey by U. S. Department of Defense The Cost of Living Allowance Living Pattern Survey for Germany will be available online from Oct. 1 through Oct. 31. Below is the URL to access the survey: https://www.defensetravel.dod.mil/ site/colaSurvey.cfm?ID=Germany What is it? This is a COLA Survey that asks Service Members and their families which local economy outlets they use when they shop for food items, clothing and many other goods and services, such as restaurant meals, hair care, and auto repair. It also asks them how much of their shopping is done

on the local economy, and how much is done at the Commissary, Exchange or on the internet.

the prices in Germany to those in the U.S., a Cost of Living Index is computed to reflect the difference.

Why is this survey important? The data reported in this survey will be used to adjust the COLA for Germany and your participation can influence the COLA rate! The Living Pattern Survey is one of the “Building Blocks” of COLA. It is conducted every 3 years to determine the local economy outlets where Service Members shop. Then, during the annual Retail Price Schedule (Market Basket Survey), the prices of 120 goods and services are collected from these outlets. After the Defense Management Travel Office compares

When is it? The LPS will be conducted between Oct. 1 through 31 with the annual follow-on Retail Price Schedule conducted between Nov. 1 and 30. Who can take it? All Service Members assigned to Germany as their Permanent Duty Station for at least 3 months should take the survey. How to take the survey: Just go to the link above and

follow the instructions. Service Members are encouraged to take the survey at home with their families as this does not require Common Access Card. It takes about 30 minutes to complete. How you can help the process: Get the word out to all assigned military personnel to ensure COLA provides the purchasing power equivalent to that of the United States. The key to success is maximum participation and good data. For additional information or questions please contact: Mrs. Shelley P. Ohlendorf, 537 1072, or email at shelley.p.ohlendorf.civ@mail.mil

Former U.S. Army site now thrives as conservation habitat by Thomas Clements United States Army Installation Management Command From 1963 to 1995, a U.S. Army compound on the edge of Germany’s Hassloch Forest served as a NATO air defense missile site, then later as a storage area for military vehicles. More than 20 years after the site’s closure, representatives from the U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz joined members of Germany’s Upper Nature Protection Board, Lower Nature Protection Board and the Federal Agency for Real Estate Tasks, or BImA, at the former entrance gate Aug. 23 to dedicate an informational sign commemorating the successful joint U.S.-German project to environmentally restore the area. “I closely monitored this project over the last seven years and intensively worked together with BImA Federal Forest partners, so there was always technical support from our side to include surveys and concept development,” said Johannes Haid, geographer and safety engineer with the garrison’s Directorate of Public Works Environmental Management Division at Germersheim Army Depot. Today, the species-rich open landscape left by the military offers a home to many protected animals. The buildings have been demolished and the landscape

is now permanently preserved — thanks to foresight, partnerships and funding. After the withdrawal of the missiles in 1983, the area served as a military vehicle storage site for 12 years and large parts of the previously unsealed area were filled with gravel. No longer required operationally, in 1995 the 16-hectare area reverted back to Germany’s federal property administration as its owner. The establishment of the preserve at the former Army site is compensation for the expansion of the nearby U.S. Army Depot at Germersheim, explained Haid. The Army upgraded the former Geinsheim site in 2010, extending the

existing rare habitats and maintaining them in long-term care. To achieve this, a concept was developed in partnership with German ecological experts, and in cooperation with the BImA and nature conservation authorities. All measures, such as the dismantling of buildings, construction of further biotopes and the 30-year maintenance of the area, are financed by the U.S. Army from funds for the expansion of the U.S. Depot Germersheim, securing long-term preservation of the unique landscape. “As a caretaker partner, nature protection association Pollichia came on board in 2014, to ensure open grazing for zebu

cattle and to determine if the use of these animals was sufficient to maintain open space or if the surfaces must be mechanically maintained,” said Haid. “The BImA is also responsible for additional compensation measures, to include the installation of nesting boxes or the construction of aquatic environments for the promotion of amphibians and dragonflies.” An animal and plant world now inhabits the former Army site, which is known for sandy grasslands, dwarf shrub heaths and whistling grass meadows. This biodiversity developed through years of human involvement, explained Haid, but the forest eventually returned to the open land. A pioneer forest of birch and nonnative, invasive tree species such as lateflowering bird cherry and vinegar trees are growing, which is home to a far less abundant flora and fauna than the open land area. Today, the Geinsheim site is within the European Union’s Bird Sanctuary, and is home to protected species such as red-backed shrikes, wrynecks and grayheaded woodpeckers. Other rare species such as crested newt, praying mantis and green beach insect also find this a suitable habitat. Free access to the area is not permitted due to grazing, but it is possible to visit the former Geinsheim site by arrangement with BImA.

German-American Friendship Concert celebrates longstanding partnership by Stefan Alford United States Army Installation Management Command U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz and the city of Kaiserslautern sponsored a German-American Friendship Concert to celebrate their harmonious partnership at the Fruchthalle, Oct. 3. The U.S. Army Europe Band and Chorus played for a sold-out auditorium of nearly 600 guests for the event’s fifth year in a row, delighting the audi-

ence with a wide range of music from classical, contemporary and show tunes that had listeners dancing in their seats. “This concert helps to build bridges between our communities as it is a symbol of friendship and partnership,” said USAG RP Commander Col. Jason T. Edwards in his opening remarks. “It celebrates the long-standing relationships we’ve developed throughout the years and gives us an opportunity to interact as friends and neighbors. This is our opportunity to say thank you to this great city which provides a home away from home to our Soldiers, civilians and families and selfless, generous hospitality for the many Americans in the greater Kaiserslautern region.” Edwards also highlighted the concert date as falling on the German federal holiday of Reunification Day as a symbol of coming together and serving as a positive example for close relations. To commemorate the event, the commander presented gifts of an engraved music sheet on a music stand to both the band and to the Kaiserslautern Lord Mayor Dr. Klaus Weichel. “What a great show, as always,” Dr.

Weichel said, addressing the crowd. “We are very thankful that we are able to put on this event in partnership with our American friends. It gets better every year.” In the 70 years that the armed forces have been in the Kaiserslautern area, many friendships have formed, he said and Germany and the United States have grown together in a very special way here in the region, which has made it a unique place to work and live. One of the guests, military historian from Mannheim, Dr. Christian Führer,

remarked, “The USAREUR Band and Chorus was, as always, a veritable blast, and people visibly enjoyed themselves. What I personally admire the most about this ensemble is its unique ability to cover a wide range of very different musical styles and assemble everything under the umbrella of one performance. The passion of both instrumentalists and vocalists was tangible throughout the concert. These wonderful people really enjoy what they’re doing and succeed in spreading tons of good mood and joy.”

Serving those who serve: 693rd ISRG’s work of ART by Senior Airman Joshua Magbanua 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Sometimes even the strongest people need a shoulder to lean on. This is why the 693rd Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance Group’s Airmen Resiliency Team takes their mission very seriously. The ART serves as a critical lifeline for the well-being of 693rd ISRG Airmen. The team consists of a psychologist, mental health technician, medical doctor, two medical technicians, chaplain, and a religious affairs specialist. “We are embedded in the 693rd to help optimize performance and promote resilience. We do this through education, consultation, and prevention services,” said Tech. Sgt. Matthew Madore, 693rd ISRG mental health technician. “Being a part of the ART is basically a special duty for my Air Force Specialty Code. It has given me a whole new view of the operational side of the Air Force. “ Chaplain (Capt.) Portmann Werner, 693rd ISRG Group Chaplain, shed light on challenges Airmen of the 693d face every day. Although the Airmen are far from the combat zone, the nature of their jobs brings the reality of war close to home. “These men and women are not in the desert, but what they do every day takes them close to the action,” said Werner. “When they go home from work, they often feel like they cannot discuss any-

thing with anyone. They go from combat to cul-de-sac.” Werner said the 480 ISRW saw a need and created airmen resiliency teams at six Air Force distributed common ground systems sites. “Back in 2013 before there was an ART, the intelligence Airmen across the Air Force were reeling from the stress they were experiencing on the job,” Werner said. “The mission was taking a toll on their lives. That’s when the previous wing commander established the ART. We’ve seen remarkable improvement in resilience since then.” “What can I say — the ART works,” Werner added. Airmen within the 693rd ISRG use ART services to work out personal issues, work performance enhancement, environmental and operational stressors, remote combat stress, physical and spiritual health, or they may simply be having a rough week and need somebody to talk to. The ART also conducts sick call, sustained deliberate unit engagement, and resiliency events. The ART also participates in the group’s monthly status of airmen resiliency (SOAR) meeting. This meeting is chaired by the 693rd group commander and includes squadron commanders, squadron superintendents, first sergeants, and the ART. The meeting helps leadership identify challenges Airmen face when working in high-stress environments and inte-

grates support for the 693d’s people. “The meeting is all about improving the mental, spiritual, and physical health of the Airmen of the 693rd. We consult with the command staff to assure every Airmen is cared for,” said Madore. While serving in the ART presents unique challenges, Madore said he takes pride in his job a n d learns new

things each day. “I feel especially privileged to serve with this community of people,” he said. “It has allowed me to grow in such a personal level—it’s pretty amazing. I also have a newfound knowledge and respect for (the) impact this commu-

nity has on the Air Force’s mission. There is honestly no other place I would rather be. My team is full of amazing people who are truly passionate about serving the 693rd ISRG.”

Stories and photos by Thomas Warner contributing writer Volleyball activity this season in Europe has centered around both Ramstein and Stuttgart. The teams met last year in the DODEA Europeans tournament semifinals and they won’t see each other again, perhaps, until the postseason. Ramstein (6-0) won separate matches against Lakenheath and Vilseck last week to stay undefeated on the season. The Ahmarie Young, RHS Lady Royals got strong play from Masaya Archbold, Ahmarie Young, plus both Izzy and Lydia Coddington. Lydia Coddington had 11 digs in the win over Vilseck. Izzy Coddington combined with Sydney Gabriel for 27 assists in that same match. Archbold had eight kills to bolster the offense. Against Lakenheath, Archbold had nine kills a hitting percentage of .750 to guide Ramstein to the win. The talented

RHS freshman Young had three service aces and five kills, while hitting at a .625 rate. Vilseck posted a 25-22 win but the Lady Royals beat them in three other games and won all the rest in the threeteam round-robin format. Ramstein also won both of its junior varsity games and will host a three-team match event this weekend in the KMC with both SHAPE and Spangdahlem slated to be participate. Baumholder falls to SHAPE Playing on its home court, Baumholder put up a fight before falling to a talented SHAPE squad. The Lady Buccaneers took the second game 25-22 but lost three others to drop the match. The last game actually went to 26-24 but SHAPE secured the win. In junior varsity play, Baumholder swept two games from SHAPE to win the match. The Lady Bucs meet Black Forest this weekend. Kaiserslautern splits with Stuttgart, Brussels A morning match over the weekend at Kaiserslautern’s new gym had lots of big hits but the Lady Raiders (2-4) were unable to find a win versus visiting Stuttgart. The KHS team rotated multiple players through the lineup and plays this weekend on the road against Stuttgart and Vilseck. Also two weekends ago, Kaiserslautern swept three straight games to win a match against Brussels.

European Championships this week Ramstein came to the European Golf

Championships this week with high hopes of a possible sweep as the yearending DODEA tournament was set to be staged Wednesday and Thursday at Wiesbaden. Results from the Euros matches did not make the KA sports deadline but look for a full report in next week’s edition. Ramstein had good play throughout the season from Ben Todman on the boys’ side. Girls’ play was productive with Phoebe Shin and Lauren Sutherland giving Ramstein a shot at winning both individual and team honors. All the top Europeans finishers from Ramstein, Kaiserslautern and the rest of Europe’s military base schools will be spotlighted in next week’s KA sports section.

CROSS COUNTRY Martin, Rogers win at Seewoog Meet Chloe Martin of Kaiserslautern won the girls overall race but Ramstein placed eight runners in the top 15 to take the team championship in a cross country meet staged at Seewoog Park in Ramstein-Miesenbach. Baumholder had Madison Brech and Regan Ridling as its top finishers. Dash Rogers of Ramstein bested Joseph Purvis of Kaiserslautern for the boys’ top prize and those two schools had 14 runners to finish in the top 20 on that recent sunny weekend morning. Baumholder had Jesse Espinoza Chloe Martin, KHS

and Hiromi Maranga as its top runners. Ramstein won the boys’ team title and area cross country teams will gather again for a meet in less than two weeks back here in the KMC. Area top finishers: Girls Chloe Martin, KHS (19:25.61) Jordanne Hill, RHS (20:41.05) Annika Zimmerer, KHS (21:07.14) Piper Parsells, KHS (22:03.23) Sophia Pak, RHS (22:12.96) Alexis Pierre-Lewis, RHS (22:13.65) Elonie Ward, KHS (22:14.19) Boys Dash Rogers, RHS (16:23.42) Joseph Purvis, KHS (16:37.10) Denver Dalpais, RHS (16:44.87) Conner Mackie, RHS (16:55.76) Orlando Rojas, KHS (16:59.02) Griffen Parsells, RHS (17:04.27) Yadiel Rojas, KHS (17:32.44) Enrius Collazo, RHS (17:50.92) Ethan Cooper, KHS (17:58.99) Benjamin Brewster, RHS (18:03.38)

TENNIS Ramstein and Kaiserslautern set to square off This weekend marks the biggest area match of the regular season as Ramstein squares off against Kaiserslautern. The showdown will take place Saturday on the brand new Kaiserslautern courts, starting at 10 a.m. and the public is invited to the KHS Vogelweh campus to take in the action. Both squads have had success this season, especially on the girls’ side for

undefeated KHS and on the boys’ side for undefeated Ramstein. The KHS and Ramstein boys and girls have combined to post a 17-3 overall wonloss record, making the match this weekend all the more interesting. The rival schools each have solid players throughout their tennis lineups. RHS topples Spangdahlem Prior to the Columbus Day break, Ramstein’s girls and boys each had big showings, taking dual 9-0 tennis wins against Spangdahlem. Ashlyn O’Connor was pushed to a third set but won at the No. 1 girls’ position. Kate Sankey, Alex Pinkham, Maddi Svan, Isabela Guzaldo, and Mercedez Shelton also won singles points. Doubles points were won by duos featuring Pinkham/ Shelton, Sankey/ O’Conner, and Guzaldo/Svan. The Royals got a 6-0, 6-0 sweep from Conner Ashlyn O’Connor, RHS Markus at No. 1, then saw Collin Kent, Conner Sankey, Collin Ritter, Trey Boehne, and Aidan Pinkham breeze through their matches with only one game lost among all five players combined. In doubles play, Markus/Kent, Sankey/Ritter, and Boehne/Pinkham each took wins. KHS splits with Stuttgart Aiva Schmitz and Vicky Thais Lopez scored wide-margin wins over their opponents and Shatavia McBride lassoed a key singles point with an 8-2 win in the No. 6 spot to help lift Kaiserslautern’s girls to a big victory over Stuttgart.

Leadership from Kaiserslautern seniors has positioned the team for a possible DODEA Division I playoff berth. (From left) Andrew Wells, Byron Thomsen, Xavier Chambers, Edward Tiscornia, Esteban Saldaña, Austin Higby, Solo Turgeon, Corey Coombs, Cedric Ellis, Maruh Massaquoi.

The Lady Raiders won all three doubles points behind the teams of McBride/Gabriela Ramirez, Lopez/ Taylor Larned, and Schmitz/Giulia Sanchez to finalize the 6-3 team win. In boys’ play, Stuttgart won 6-3 after taking four of the six singles points. Darren Moon and Micah San Pedro both had singles wins for K-Town and Olaitan Powdar teamed with Mark Butler to get a doubles triumph for the Raiders.

FOOTBALL Kaiserlsautern set for huge game on the road at Stuttgart It wasn’t that long ago that Kaiserslautern last made the football playoffs. The Raiders went to the postseason in both 2013 and 2014 but still, none of the current rostered players were part of that success. After making a coaching change and installing a new plan, the Kaiserslautern program is a win or two away from securing another playoff berth. Currently in second place for Division I, the Raiders can all but secure a spot if they beat Stuttgart this weekend and might win Division I outright by also winning their last game against Ramstein. First things first, with the road game at Stuttgart set to kick off Saturday. “We can’t look further than the next game and our seniors are giving everyone the direction to do just that,” said first-year head coach Duke Allen. “We rely on the older guys who’ve been around through some tough times, several of them, to set the tone. We want to make the playoffs and we want to beat Stuttgart. This momentum has really built for us.” Corey Coombs is the leading Raider rusher, carrying usually over 30 times a game. Two weeks ago he had

over 40 carries and gained over 350 yards to fuel a 26-20 win over Vilseck. A previous road win at Wiesbaden was also pivotal in helping position the Raiders for this weekend’s game against the defending DODEA champion Panthers. “Some of us have been out here four years with the program and we know what it’s like to lose games … it kinda hurts and this year we are trying to give something extra. We’ve got a good team this year,” said senior Cedric Ellis. New coach Allen said he counts on quarterback Esteban Saldana and new transfer Solo Turgeon to display confidence on either side of the ball and settle the team after mistakes, adding that without trust in each other, the team will struggle. “These kids have grown so much in the short time since we started practices and did our preseason work,” Allen said. “They’ve come together, they lean on each other, they pick each other up. They are setting a foundation for the program’s future but they also want to win right now.” Ramstein travels to Wiesbaden Ramstein has back-to-back road games to close the regular season but sits in a familiar spot – first place – as October arrives. The Royals have never lost more than one regular season game during this decade and have another dynamite squad this year. Having beaten Vilseck 27-17 and Lakenheath 40-0 during the past three weeks, Ramstein looks all the part of a team that’s headed to the postseason as the top seed. Dominique Arizpe, Bailey Holland, J.J. Little, Oliver Seelig, and Jalon Lewis are all capable ballcarriers when quarterback Jakob Steinbeck isn’t throwing the ball to tall wideouts Jason Jones Jr. and Naser Eaves.

Holland and Little each scored a touchdown, while Arizpe had three TD runs against Lakenheath. The Royals are tough to penetrate with defenders Bailey Holland, Gabe Davis, Kyle Lloyd, Cole Strom, Logan Ridenbaugh, Katroy Wright, Cameron Chester and a host of other stoppers. Little has five interceptions this fall to anchor a proven defensive secondary and Ramstein has not been compromised aside from the Vilseck game. The road clash with Wiesbaden is Friday night. The final regular season game at K-Town is next, then the DODEA Division I semifinals take place here in the KMC the weekend of Oct. 28 at Vogelweh. Baumholder searching for first win After making the shift to 6-man football, Baumholder came close last week to getting its first win. A tight 28-24 loss to Hohenfels came a week after the Buccaneers fell by a larger margin in their opener to Brussels. “In our second game and we were vastly improved on both sides of the ball,” BHS coach Phil Loyd. “We had two touchdowns by Kyle Emmons on punt return for TD and a kickoff return for another score. Quentin Murphy and Jeremiah Christopher each scored as well. We will go at it this week and try to keep improving and showing the same effort.” Now comes a road game against AFNORTH and the BHS team must seize the opportunity with still a shot at making noise in Quentin Murphy, BHS Division III.

All about 220 volt power in Europe By Find-It-Guide.com If you are new to Germany, you may have noticed a difference in the plug size and shape for your electric appliances and utilities. The plugs are big, round, have thick prongs and fit into the outlets in the wall incredibly tight. That is all by design as the power coming through the wall is powerful. Welcome to 220 volt power! Too many people have made the mistake of using an adapter to charge their American plug appliances (like an electric toothbrush) before checking what power rating they can take, only to find an extremely hot (and sometimes melted mess) waiting for them. Or if their appliance has a rechargeable battery, they will likely get a super charged (soon to be burned out) output when it is turned on. Way back in the day when electricity was first introduced, appliances used all sorts of power variants to run their functions with regard to voltage and frequency. Eventually, producers bought each other up, governments made regulations that brought standards in line, and the open market created pressure for a more consistent product.

What doesn’t work in Europe If you look at the appliance and it has a reading where the cord comes out (or on the power bank) like “110v” or “110-120v,” then this is not useable directly with a power outlet in Europe (we will talk about converters in a moment). If you attempt to use this type of appliance, it will result in burnout of the appliance and possible power breaker tripping as well as a possible fire.

What works in Europe If you look on the appliance where the cord comes out or if it has a power bank attached to the cord (like computers do), there will be a power rating. If it shows

something like this: “110-220v” or even “110-240v,” then you are ok to use it in both America and Europe. You will just need to pick up an adapter so the plug end fits correctly into European outlets.

I have all 110 volt appliances. What should I do? If you brought over a ton of appliances from the states that are 110 volt, you can do a couple things: Sell all of your items with 110 volt ratings and buy european 220 volt appliances so you can plug them directly into the wall. Yes, it may cost a bit, but they will be fully useable without any issue. Just sell all the old stuff on FindItGuide.com or your favorite site! Get a power converter that allows you to convert 220 volt power down to 110 volt. Read more on last page of Property Section

How to find the watts on your appliance and select the proper voltage converter To determine the correct model of voltage converter or heavy duty transformer you need, you’ll first have to identify the wattage of the electronic devices or appliances that you plan to use. You can find this information listed on the manufacturer’s label which is located on the back or bottom of the device or appliance, or in the specifications section of the appliance owner’s manual.

Watts may be abbreviated as W on your appliance. However if you can’t find watts or W on the label of your appliance, then you may be able to find Amps, also known as amperage or A. This can be converted to watts in order to select the correct converter. If only the amperage rating is shown, multiply the input voltage by the amperage rating to find the wattage rating. Use the following example as a guide: Volts x Amps = Watts or 110V x 1.5 A = 165W Voltage converter ratings are generally within a voltage range. Appliances rated

for 110 volts or 120 volts can usually operate from anywhere between 100 volts and 127 volts. Likewise, 220 volt or 230 volt appliances can usually operate from anywhere between 220 volts and 240 volts. Th erefore, any quality step-down voltage converter will allow any 110 volt appliance to operate in 220 volt, 230 volt or even 240 volt countries. Will running my 220 to 110 voltage converter cost more on my electric bill? The short answer is yes. In fact, any appliance you have plugged in that has a mini converter as part of it’s

function will cost money if it is plugged in and you are not using it. Your converter that allows you to use 110 volt appliances from the states is constantly converting electricity whenever it is plugged in and turned on. Over time, this can end up

costing you a pretty penny. Converters are really a short term solution, so you may want to think about trading those 110 volt appliances in. As always, check with a professional whenever purchasing electrical appliances and converters.
