Airmen assigned to the 1st Combat Communications Squadron held a combat readiness course to validate their ability to defend themselves and their equipment in hostile environments. The squadron tested capabilities to include site defense, tactical driving, nighttime operations and local relations. These competencies enable the 1st CBCS to successfully support U.S. and allied warfighters in any environment. “The 1st CBCS is the only tactical communications unit in the European and African theaters,” said Master Sgt. Learning new languages can broaden one’s horizons, but for some languages even mastering the alphabet is a challenge. The Language Enabled Airman Program is here to help active duty Air Forceofficers and enlisted personnel through that. LEAP, a program managed by the Air Force Culture and Language Center, teaches Airmen new languages and assigns them missions
in support of the Air Force. The program is instrumental to the development of many Airmen and builds relationships with partner nations across the world. 86th Airlift Wing Command Chief Master Sgt. Hope Skibitsky is a long-time champion of the LEAP program. “Our 2018 national defense strategy talks about how strategically we are supposed to get out and deter in this incredibly complex and ever-changing world we live in,” said Skibitsky. “We do that by cultivating skills that Airmen
already have in regards to both language and culture.” Tech. Sgt. Sung Min Son, 86th Operational Medical Readiness Squadron flight medicine technician, has been involved with the LEAP program since 2014, and his life has not been the same since. “Without having these LEAP experiences, I would not have been able to make it this far (in my career),” Son said. “I really appreciate their support.” See LEAP, Page 3

COMMENTARY: LEADERSHIP THOUGHTS
by Lt. Col. Dennis Widner 86th Logistics Readiness Squadron One of my favorite things about the military is our focus on people, which drives us to spend a lot of time developing others. I’ve picked up a lesson or two over the years and I try to pass on tidbits to my team to help them find their way through their careers. As a prior Airman Leadership School Instructor, I employ techniques I once taught with the mindset of developing the next set of leaders to replace me. To accomplish this, I look to attain mutual respect,
leverage that respect into an influential leadership style and maintain a conflict management posture to keep my teams strong and on track. The first step to attaining mutual respect is to consider the personnel with whom you’re dealing as people. Often times, we lose sight of who the people surrounding us really are. We often see gender, race, sexual preference, etc., but is that really what you should be focusing on? Don’t get me wrong, I think we should celebrate our diversity as it’s one of the many things that makes us so great. However, we must mutually respect one another to celebrate that diversity and we have to see each other simply as people. Moreover, people who’ve made the choice to serve and stand shoulder to shoulder with us. I urge you to consider this when you look around your work centers. We’re all sons and daughters, brothers and sisters, moms and dads or aunts and uncles. Some of us are grandparents who have answered the call to serve. Once you use this lens to see your teammates
and give them that respect you set the stage for mutual respect. This will allow relationship building to set you up as an influential leader. I think we’ve all experienced a boss that would “drive” teams instead of lead them. You may have learned a lot from that individual, but is that someone you looked up to? Considering mutual respect, I imagine you have probably looked more favorably upon others who have truly been able to motivate you to accomplish tasks and leave you energized at the end of the day. An example of this is the Applied Persuasion Theory from Stewart Tubbs’ A Systems Approach to Small Group Interaction. This theory ties relationships between supervisor and subordinate, supervisor and task and subordinate and task. If the supervisor and the subordinate have a positive relationship and the supervisor has a positive attitude towards the task at hand, then the subordinate will likely exhibit a positive attitude toward the task as well. Note, this discusses having positive relation-
ships, not unprofessional. Once you become an influential leader you can move to the next level and manage conflict instead of letting it tear us apart. I consider it imperative to manage conflict and resist the urge to solve all of our teams’ problems. Many years ago I heard a story, from an unknown author, about the struggle of an Emperor Moth. A collector had purchased a cocoon and was impatiently awaiting the emergence of this beautiful creature. However, weeks passed and still no moth. Eventually he cut the cocoon in an effort to help his new pet. When the moth emerged, it wasn’t the beautiful creature with large colorful wings he expected, but a short pudgy small winged creature. Feeling as though he’d been swindled, he attempted to return the moth to the retailer for restitution. When he arrived to plead his case, the store manager took one look at the moth and asked if he had cut the cocoon. The collector responded, “Yes, it wasn’t able to break free, so I had to.” The manager then
relayed that the struggle to escape the cocoon is critical for the transition into a beautiful moth, as the blood is squeezed from its body and into the wings, giving the moth its unique appearance. Therefore, by providing undue assistance to the moth, the collector inadvertently “clipped” its wings. I ask you to take this story to heart and consider how you manage conflict within your teams. It’s hard to watch them struggle, but sometimes it’s best to manage the process and let your team grow and surprise you. These are just some of my thoughts and things I strive to do each day. I’d ask you to consider my personal philosophy and attain mutual respect by seeing those around you as who they truly are. Take time to leverage that respect into an influential leadership style and learn how to manage conflict instead of trying to push your lessons learned on others to foster growth. Don’t “clip their wings.” I ask you to add these thoughts to your toolbox in case they come in handy one day.

students learned a lot about protecting their site, how to interact with the local population, setting up a live communications system in a simulated deployment and how to work as a team to accomplish their objectives,” Zamzow said. The 1st CBCS’ team mentality allows them to accomplish a lot
within limited parameters. “We are one of the rare units that can provide small and large communication support from a bare base and austere locations,” Velazquez said. “We utilize our own services when needed to support hundreds of customers.” Airmen will continue to face new challenges in their respective

With these new challenges, the Air Force will develop new training plans to adapt and overcome them, and the 1st CBCS is no exception. “It is through this type of training and these types of exercises that our personnel learn how to prepare for the next generation of adversaries,” Zamzow said. “We never know when
the next conflict or war will happen, but the 1st CBCS will be ready to answer the call and provide forward operating communications in hostile environments due to the hard work of instructors and students coming together to change culture and develop the next wave of warfighters.”

LEAP from Page 1 For example, in 2019 Son was assigned a temporary duty assignment to South Korea where he acted as an interpreter between Korean and U.S. Marines. Son was able to observe how the Marines performed their work while strengthening the bonds between South Korean and U.S. Forces. “It was such an honorable moment to be a part of their mission,” Son said. “I hope other LEAP applicants can be part of that mission as well.” First Lt. Brian Clark, 603rd Operations Center non-kinetic duty officer, agrees. Clark learned Russian in the LEAP program and was able to participate in a study abroad program in Latvia where he appreciated how different the Latvian and Russian cultures are. “As a NATO country, it’s good to learn about their culture and be able to work with them,” Clark said. Clark recognizes the importance of his duties, as it is his responsibility to help further partnerships with other nations and honor their cultures. “When you’re learning about a culture and then you go to where it’s actually practiced it can seem less foreign to you,” Clark said. “It helps you adjust to a new country and you’re able to appreciate their culture more.” LEAP participants develop an ability called cross-cultural competency, Clark adds. Crosscultural competency measures one’s ability to work with members of a foreign country while learning their language and culture. Honing this skill is invaluable for Ramstein Airmen who
frequently find themselves working with allies and partners across Europe and Africa. Many languages are available in the program, from Spanish to Russian, Arabic or even German. Knowing multiple languages prior is not a requirement for admittance into the program but applicants must demonstrate language proficiency for acceptance. After acceptance to the program, the member chooses a language to learn from the Air Force Strategic Language List and they proceed through the program in two sections. The first section is a set of virtual classes where an instructor teaches the language. The next section consists of temporary duty assignments where the student visits a country where the language is widely

The DOs and DON’Ts DON’T wait before the deep chill of winter sets in. Winterize your home now! DON’T use exterior decorations that can impede walking paths. Keep your stairs clear and don’t cover railings with decorations in such a way that people can’t grab on if they need to steady themselves. DON’T forget to check all lights and extension cords for frayed wires, damaged sockets, and gaps in the insulation. If they are damaged, toss them! DON’T link more than 3 strands of lights together. DON’T plug different types of light sets together; including one of your old incandescent light strings into a new LED set. DON’T mount lights in any way that could damage the electrical cord’s insulation using nails, tacks or staples. Safe and healthy Thanksgiving
by Col. (Dr.) Ryan Mihata 86th Medical Group Commander Happy Thanksgiving! As we prepare for the fast-approaching holiday season, please remember to be safe. Even as we celebrate with small groups, be mindful of your physical distance and potential for exposure. Be safe, not just from COVID, but in all that you do, especially when it is outside of your normal day-to-day routines. A teammate recently reminded me about the dangers of some of the ways people cook turkey, such as deep frying, which has the potential for sparking fires and causing burn injuries. Also, remember Germany’s laws for impaired driving and the lower blood alcohol content limits here. Don’t get behind the wheel after drinking. On the COVID front, we are three weeks into the new local restrictions. The good news is we are slightly lower on the new case trend across Rheinland-Pfalz (129 cases per 100 thousand). The bad news is that Germany will likely hit the 1 million case mark sometime this week. Sadly, Kaiserslautern is
still on an upward trend and has experienced an increase in deaths attributed to COVID over the last several weeks. On Ramstein, we continue to see cases where people have gone to work or school with minor symptoms and end up having COVID. Remember that COVID can be a spectrum from no symptoms to full pneumonia, shortness of breath and chest pain. If you have any symptoms, stay home and contact your medical care team or go to the emergency room for severe symptoms. As always, keep wearing the face covering, maintaining physical distance and washing your hands. Again this week, influenza levels remain low across the
United States. The CDC is calling it “unusually low.” Europe tends to see its influenza cases about one or two months after the United States. The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control did not have any reported cases Nov. 9-15 in their monitoring sites. We continue to see very low levels in our area, and we still have no update on our shipment of influenza vaccine. We plan to hold mass shot lines in Hangar 3 once we receive the shipment, and we will keep you informed of dates and times. by Airman 1st Class Taylor Slater 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs For some, readiness isn’t just a word: it’s a mantra they live by every day. “My biggest motto is, ‘Stay ready so we don’t have to get ready,’” said Staff Sgt. Rashad Speller, noncommissioned officer in charge of readiness at the 86th Airlift Wing Chapel. “If you’re always ready, then you won’t have to scramble to get ready at the last minute.” Speller, winner of Airlifter of the Week, lives and breathes readiness both on and off the job. While Speller’s Air Force career began as a member of the 569th Security Forces Squadron in 2011, his interest in readi-
ness originated from a passion for logistics in his job prior to joining. “I used to work at an industrial plant,” Speller said. “I’ve seen how they had to have all their parts there at a certain time and how they had to try to figure out the costs. ‘What’s the best cost for this part?’ ‘Is it better than the other part we ordered years ago?’ Things like that really intrigued me.” Speller cross-trained into religious affairs in 2017, where Speller’s supervisors were able to connect his industrial interest with personnel preparation. Readiness transcends to Speller’s home life, where he works hard to make sure his family is ready for anything at any time.
“I’m a proactive guy,” Speller said. “So when it comes to being at home it’s the simple things: Making sure things are taken care of before leaving the house, making sure everything is set up for the wife and the family [on deployments] so that way she doesn’t have to worry about things when I’m gone. It’s just being prepared.” As NCOIC of readiness, Speller manages the second-largest chapel team in the Air Force on military readiness requirements, becoming a key part of the chapel team’s success during Operation Varsity 20-04. “I made sure everyone was

knowledgeable and made sure everybody was doing the right thing,” Speller said. “I let everyone know what each person’s job consists of and also let them know what [their colleague’s] job was just in case their wingman went down. I made sure everyone knew what was going on not just in our area, but around the base.” On Nov. 5, Speller earned Airlifter of the Week, an award recognizing outstanding Airmen across the wing. Speller’s dedication ensured that 63 critical deployment items met Air Force and Department of Defense requirements. Speller also organized the Emergency Management
function, ensuring effective responses and survivability in support of all Kaiserslautern Military Community personnel. Speller’s skillset guides the eight-member Chapel Control Center team which formulated 100% mission compliance during Operation Varsity 20-04. However, Speller is quick to admit this achievement would not have been possible without the help of his team. “I have a great team and we do this all collectively,” Speller said. “I want to continue to be the best I can be to make sure that we’re all mission-capable, mission-ready and mission-focused.”

Imagine locating potentially dozens of people who came into contact with one COVID-19 patient over the past 14 days of their life. Then another person close to them tests positive, and now their contacts over the past 14 days have to be notified. Now imagine doing that every day. That is a day in the life of the 86th Medical Group Public Health flight, a key part of the group’s COVID-19 task force that contact traces positive cases on the base. “Tracing is probably one of the hardest things (for us) because we rely so much on the individual to remember who they’ve been in contact with and where they’ve been,” said Senior Master Sgt. Camille Horton, 86th MDG senior enlisted leader for COVID-19 operations. Since March the 86th MDG has worked hard to keep the Kaiserslautern Military Community healthy. The COVID-19 task force is made up of 23 Airmen, with the combined efforts of multiple departments and squadrons in the 86th MDG. Other units on Ramstein help
to facilitate COVID-19 testing, such as the 86th Security Forces Squadron, 86th Vehicle Readiness Squadron and 721st Aerial Port Squadron. “We try to share the wealth so that one individual squadron isn’t bearing the brunt of it,” said Lt. Col. Jaime Rojas, 86th Airlift Wing public health emergency officer. “It helps our COVID-19 operations.” One of the frequent challenges for Horton and Rojas as task force leaders is adapting to rapidly changing guidance, whether from the Department of Defense, Air Force or German laws. “We always try to be as flexible as possible, but when we’re dealing with COVID-19, quarantine and isolations, those dates aren’t flexible, unfortunately,” Rojas said. Another challenge the task force has to combat is fluctuations in numbers. One week may have low numbers, but the next week could have the task force combating a sudden spike in cases. “Each time we have a case, that person is going to be identified and notified by their physician,” Rojas said. “Then Public Health is going to identify that individual’s close contacts, and those close contacts are going to be called and instructed to

quarantine for 14 days. So you can imagine if someone wasn’t following the rules, it has significant impacts on missions on base.” Rojas emphasizes that ignoring health guidelines has a human cost on the lives of the task force. Multiple positive COVID-19 tests puts massive pressure on the team, making it harder for them to perform their jobs. “Our public health professionals work seven days a week, and our providers work six days a week,” Rojas said. “And they’ve been doing these operations since March. One person’s laxity on the rules can put significant stress on our people.” Despite these challenges, what keeps Rojas passionate about his position is watching his teammates learn. “One of the things I look forward to now is seeing my subject matter
experts truly become subject matter experts,” Rojas said. “I look around and see how much these guys have grown, and the ability and autonomy that we’ve given them to go ahead and make these decisions even when we’re at a high ops tempo base.” The resiliency of the COVID-19 task force was essential on a difficult day in early November when a fresh team was tasked with facilitating testing for an influx of personnel who required testing, leaving the COVID-19 drive-thru completely full. “We had brand new people on the team who didn’t have the opportunity to get comfortable or know what the process was,” Horton said. “It was a group of people that picked up on everything we briefly went over that morning and they were able to knock it out of the park
with (minimal) training.” Another satisfying aspect of the senior enlisted position for COVID-19 operations is seeing additional perspectives from Airmen augmentees outside the medical group, Horton said. “Most people come into the medical group as a patient,” Horton said. “But this time they’re actually an employee of the medical group, and they can see the opposite side of things and what we deal with on a day-to-day basis. They understand now, ‘Okay, the medical group is really doing some awesome things over here.’” Overall, 86th MDG Airmen emphasized face coverings, following German guidelines and keeping the amount of close contacts to a minimum. “We understand that we’re social in nature, but for us to get from point A to point B, we’re going to have to make some difficult choices so that we can get to where we all want to be,” Rojas said. Innovations help drive Ramstein postal operations Story and photos by Senior Airman Noah Coger 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Every unit in the Air Force faces its own set of unique challenges. Those challenges inevitably lead to solutions through innovation. For the Northside Post Office on Ramstein, innovations are always driven by one idea: how to better serve the customer. Some of these innovations and initiatives have already been implemented while others are still in the works. One such addition rolled out at the Northside Post Office in 2019. Named after the company that developed it, SC Logic is an automated postal scanning system that sends push notifications to customers, letting them know when their package has arrived. “All Kaiserslautern Military Community post offices are transitioning to paperless notification for package services in November of 2020,” said Tech. Sgt. Darren Hinds-Webster, 786th Force Support Squadron official mail manager. “This will return roughly 3,000 man-hours annually to the post office.” In addition to returning manhours, the initiative will also save the government $87,000 in printing materials, aligning the post office’s processes with the Paperwork Reduction Act. The next evolution to the SC Logic initiative due to roll out early next year, is the addition of kiosks. Customers will input their box number into the kiosk, which will then notify the postal clerks in the back to gather their packages. Once gathered, a notification will

be displayed to the waiting customer via a television monitor outside the parcel pickup window. This system will allow postal clerks to gather multiple packages at a time for customers, which will streamline pickup times. “The goal is to decrease the customer’s wait time and increase our productivity,” said Senior Airman Melissa Lewis, 786th FSS postal clerk. While these initiatives directly affect the customer and can be more readily observed, others will be more indirect and not seen from the outside of the service window. Currently, postal clerks in the postal service center section dedicate eight hours per day sorting through roughly 30 trays of first class mail. This hefty task takes
Airmen away from other duties that could improve customer service experiences. It was apparent this process needed overhauling and change is on the way. “With the help of the 700th Contracting Squadron, the 86th Comptroller Squadron, and the United States Air Forces in Europe Strategic Plans and Programs, we have secured a fully operational first class mail sorter,” HindsWebster said. “It should be in place by mid-November, this year.” The mail sorter far exceeds the capabilities of sorting by hand and is able to sort 14,000 pieces of first class mail in one hour, returning tons of man-hours to the squadron. In addition to streamlining processes, other considerations like

physical space are also being examined. Recognizing the need for more space, the postal flight worked with civilian industry leaders to design high density shelving units. “Over the past 13 years, postal operations have grown by 110 percent, yet the storage capacity has remained the same,” HindsWebster said. “These shelves will return over 5,800 square feet to the post office and prepare our facilities for the constantly growing mission.” Not all of these innovations were derived from local needs; some are directed straight from the United States Postal Service. In order to alleviate missent packages and streamline mail system flow, the USPS recently mandated that all customs forms will be
filled out online, prior to shipping. “There are several ways to do this,” said Senior Airman Patric Bushee, 786th FSS postal clerk. “There is still the old way of filling everything out by hand here at the post office, but now there are online options as well. Customers can choose the ‘click-and-ship’ option which allows them to fill out the form and process payment all online. That way when they come in they can just drop it off and be on their way. Or they can fill out just the customs form online; it will generate a barcode which we can then scan, pull up the information, and then process payment at the time of drop-off.” Of course, all these innovations and initiatives would not be possible without the people behind them driving them forward. And the postal clerks of the Northside Post Office don’t always go it alone. During the holidays they invite people to take tours of the Post Office and encourage volunteerism. “We always appreciate the efforts of our volunteers,” said Staff Sgt. Garrison named gold medal finalist second year in a row The U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz community not only gets to enjoy being part of the recent Best Garrison in Europe award, but they also have access to some of the best services an installation can offer. Earlier this year, the garrison’s Directorate of Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation was named a finalist for the 2020 National Gold Medal Awards for Excellence in Park and Recreation Management. The National Gold Medal Award Program, managed and governed by the American Academy for Park and Recreation Administration, honors civilian communities in the United States and military installations around the world for excellence in parks and recreation through long-range planning, resource management, volunteerism, environmental stewardship, program development, professional development, and agency recognition. There are only 24 finalists selected among thousands of park and recreation agencies worldwide. DFMWR at every military installation oversees Army Community Service; Child Youth and School Services; Better Opportunities for Single Soldiers; and automotive skill centers, arts and crafts, theaters, libraries, and fitness centers. Deputy Director of DFMWR Ingrid Osewalt said that what sets the garrison apart from the rest is about going the extra mile for the community. “[We] provide relevant, reliable and predictable services and support to Soldiers and their families,” she said. “We strive to be the first choice for our customers and we want them to use our services because we are their first choice, and not because we are the only game in town.” Backing up that community

preference was last month’s release of the annual Stars and Stripes Best of Germany reader’s poll that recognized DFMWR’s Pulaski Auto Shop as the best auto repair shop in Kaiserslautern. The contracted eatery Shawingz at the Kazabra Club on Vogelweh was also named a first-place winner by community members. Osewalt said a big part of their focus involves securing government funding for major renovations, minor constructions, and capital purchases — a highly competitive process. In 2019, 66 Capital Purchase Minor Construction projects totaling $1.35M were completed, helping enhance services and upgrade facilities throughout the Rheinland-Pfalz footprint.
DFMWR also obtained almost $4.9 million in capital investment to renovate the aquatic center at Smith Barracks, Baumholder, the Army’s only indoor pool in Germany. “We now offer not only water survival training for military personnel in Germany, but also a place for recreation year-round,” Osewalt said. She said enhancing programs for kids is also a major focus. In 2019, Child and Youth Services took ownership of an abandoned, unsafe skate park rarely used for its intended purpose, and DFMWR lobbied for funding to re-purpose the park as a covered turf youth sports field. Today, the field is used by Army youth enrolled in CYS yearround sports and fitness programs.
Post libraries also teamed with CYS to hold several large family events, such as Dinovember, Fancy Tea Party, and Polar Express, with over 300 people attending each. “These events were in addition to 800+ literacy-based programs organized by library staff in 2019,” Osewalt said. Another important distinction, she said, is the robust volunteer network that helps keep USAG RP thriving. More than 7,500 Soldiers, civilians, retirees, spouses, and youth volunteer throughout the garrison footprint for schools, hospitals, sports fields, entertainment events, community theater, and recreational activities. In 2019, volunteers put in almost 145,000 hours of work, for about $3.8 million in labor savings. In particular, volunteers at the KMC Onstage, the garrison’s community theater located on Kleber Kaserne, donated over 55,000 hours of their time to produce 37 musicals, comedies, and dramas over the last three years. Beth Dougherty is one of them. She started volunteering for behind-the-scenes work at KMC Onstage when her children took part in Seussical the Musical in 2017. “I will never forget seeing one of the first props I made onstage,” she said. “It got a laugh every time the actor used it, and I was hooked. Ever since then I have been volunteering every Wednesday and Friday during the season to work on the sets.” She estimates that she’s worked on about 20 productions, to include painting sets, making props, running the sound booth, managing the stage, and even acting once. What started out as a way to get out of the house and meet people turned into a vital creative outlet. “When people come together to use their talents and passion to create a show, something magical happens,” she said. “There

It’s a win-win for the volunteers and customers of FMWR.” Osewalt said 2020 brought many new challenges to most DFMWR services and projects due to the COVID-19 pandemic. “We had to shut down most of our front door services for several months, and at the same time, find ways to remain relevant after reopening,” she said. “We also had to figure out how to provide support and maintain relationships with our customers while we were closed.” To stay compliant with regulations, DFMWR offered outdoor fitness classes and lots of virtual programming. “Looking back, I think we did an awesome job during the first wave and I am confident that we will also get through this second wave and associated temporary facility closures,” Osewalt said. The future, she said, could bring with it financial challenges that make it harder to make major facility improvements or purchase new equipment and furniture, but she remains optimistic. “These hurdles will only make us work harder and stronger as a team,” she said. “And, speaking of the FMWR team, we have one of the finest and most professional FMWR teams I have ever been associated with in my career. Vincent Wilson 10thArmyAirandMissileDefenseCommand Soldiers from the 10th Army Air and Missile Defense Command, U.S. Air Force personnel, and NATO allies participated in the annual NATO Missile Firing Installation live fire exercise, Nov. 18. The NAMFI live fire is designed to enhance interoperability among NATO allies and partners to increase readiness through the integration of land component air and missile defense capabilities. NAMFI is a German-led, Greece hosted exercise and is supported by The Netherlands. The NAMFI live fire takes place on the Greek Island of Crete and is conducted by more than 600 personnel from the U.S., Greece, Germany and the Netherlands. This year's live fire marks the return of U.S. personnel to the exercise after a three-year hiatus. On Monday, U.S. Patriot operators will fire four missiles from German Patriot missile platforms. The mission is for ground forces to establish a fully integrated and partnered surface-based air defense operations cell and then conduct a live fire exercise, explained Netherlands Air Force Lt. Col. Rudi Snel, assigned to NATO Air Command Headquarters. Snel, who is also the Team Chief of the exercises evaluation team, said this will all be accomplished while being graded by a team of 51 evaluators. “U.S. involvement in this exercise is in part to increase

USAG celebrates employee service longevity Story and photos by Melissa McLaughlin USAG Rheinland-Pfalz Public Affairs As with many other events impacted by current gathering restrictions, the U.S. Army Garrison RheinlandPfalz Length of Service Ceremony also took place in a different setting than usual recently. Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic mitigation measures, almost 200 U.S. and local national civilian employees were thanked and honored virtually for their long-tenured service to the U.S. Army by Deputy Garrison Commander Dr. Kevin L. Griess and Command Sgt. Maj. Brett D. Waterhouse. A video recognizing the Length of Service achievements of garrison employees was posted Nov. 6 at https:// www.dvidshub.net/video/771849/ length-service-ceremony Dr. Griess highlighted the importance of the annual recognition ceremony as a time to get together and put focus on the employees and their contributions to the success of the organization — as evidenced by USAG Rheinland-Pfalz recently being named the best garrison in Europe and third best in the Army for 2019. . “It’s a small token of appreciation,” he said. “Especially now in times of COVID-19, we want to recognize our people.” Aside from recognizing the U.S. civilians, throughout the years, LN’s
have been a consistent and dedicated workforce to provide much-needed backbone and continuity in an environment that routinely sees U.S. counterparts rotating out every 3 – 5 years. “The Length of Service ceremony is a thank you from the commander for the hard work put in every day,” said Daniel Nagel, Chairman of the USAG RP Works Council in Kaiserslautern. “Over the past year, we have all experienced many changes together that shows whether we are local nationals, government service employees or active duty military, we are one big family.” “Thank you all for your longstanding loyalty,” Nagel added. “Unfortunately we can’t conduct the ceremony as usual this year, but will make up for it as soon as it is possible. In the meantime, we must keep everyone healthy.” With approximately 70% of the garrison civilian workforce being local nationals, the deputy garrison commander explained just how important they are to the garrison mission. “They’re the heart — and how important is the heart?” Dr. Griess emphasized. “I don’t want to portray us as just being glad the local nationals are here. We’re here because of them. This is their country and this garrison wouldn’t be able to operate without local nationals at work.” During his career, Dr. Griess has served at three different garrisons
in Germany. The constant he sees over the years of working with local nationals as part of the team is their strong dedication to quality and continuity. “Because our local nationals get to stay here and the Iris Eifler Americans usually rotate, they have the ability to know this type of system and usually have worked with it for 10 to 15 years,” he said. “They watch commanders come and go. So, they have a breadth of experience that you just don’t normally find when people move around a lot.” Among the many long-tenured civilian employees with the garrison is Carmen Siebenlist. Siebenlist recounted the local U.S. job market being much easier to enter when she first started her Army career as a secretary at an Installation Coordination Office. Since then, she has worked as a DOD foreign coordinator, secretary at 21st Theater Sustainment Command, recreation specialist, language assistant and finally worked her way up to her current job as a supervisory police liaison specialist with the garrison’s Directorate of Emergency Services, where she has remained for the past 10 years. Having started in February 1979, Siebenlist has now served the U.S. Army for a total of 41 years. For her, one of the biggest advantages working as an LN are the many training opportunities the military provides to all of its employees. The challenge, she said, is adapting to the frequent rotation of colleagues and leaders: “With every new leader, philosophies change, readjustments have to be made and there are always new ways of doing things.” Overall, Carmen credits her time working for the U.S. forces as having a thoroughly positive impact on her life, describing her work center as a very family-like environment Throughout the years she has made several close friends and even met her husband,
with whom she shares a daughter. Work-related travel has also given her the opportunity to visit places she may not have otherwise seen. Having worked for the U.S. Army for 35 years, Iris Eifler is also part of the long-tenured workforce with the garrison, serving as the command group’s administrative assistant at Baumholder’s Smith Barracks. “Baumholder is my hometown and I grew up with American citizens. I had American friends in kindergarten, and later in school,” she recalled. Because the Baumholder installation was an open post at the time, she often came there to enjoy some of the many things it provided: “Back then I went for ice cream, pizza and hamburgers and was always interested in the American culture.“ In 1985 she applied and was hired at the transportation motor pool where she began her work for the U.S. Army. She considers the working conditions, working hours and clientele all being positive factors working as a local national. “The best thing about working for the U.S. Army is the outstanding relationships I have built with the Soldiers and my work colleagues over the years. People come and go. I am still in contact with many friends and work colleagues who have departed this community recently —and even up to 25 years ago.” Silvia Timmer-Moersdorf also works at Baumholder, as a project administrator at the engineering branch of the Directorate of Public Works. She started her LN career with the U.S. Army in April 1982. Timmer-Moersdorf has had her LN job affect her life in many ways: “I

met my husband right in the beginning of my job here at the DPW. We got married and our sons were born in 1988 and 1992. My sister made the acquaintance of her future husband here in Baumholder and moved to the U.S. in 1984. She has lived and worked overseas since then. Of course we have a lot of friends in the United States now.” “Many of (our LNs) have been working here for longer than I am old,” added Works Council Chairman Nagel. “A simple word of gratitude can mean so much. (We thank you) as a sign of respect and appreciation.” For Dr. Griess, working as a local national with the U.S. Army means making a difference in people’s lives and continuing to build strong relationships. “It can be exciting. When working with Americans you get to see who we are as people and we get to see who you are as well. “When we’re at work we want to know: How’s your family today? How are you doing today? I think that brings more of a team kind of environment.” Creating international bonds through friendships that may remain a whole lifetime and being able to foster cross-cultural relations are some of the opportunities the garrison provides for its employees, said Dr. Griess. “I get up every single day proud of what every person does here,” Dr. Griess added. “And the fact that we can be in the same buildings, the same cars, the same rooms to work on really important things together – that’s testament to our long-standing partnership.”

So many worldfamous cultures, countries, cities, and landmarks are so reachable. And even when travel is confined to Germany, life is still good. This is a big country. It has mountains, lakes, wilderness, rivers, seas, cities and an endless supply of cute villages. The potential for long vacations and great day trips (naturally) is nearly limitless. In the COVID era, however, sometimes even the smallest travel windows become closed. When that happens, we’re left at home wondering what, exactly, we can do to feel like our old explorer selves. Fear not! As wise people the world over have said since time immemorial: this, too, shall pass. In the meantime, consider a Quarantine day trip (or Q-trip). What’s that mean? Let’s find out! Q-Trips: day trips like no other A quick caveat: the word “Quarantine” here connotes, “I am perfectly healthy, but can’t really travel anywhere too far away because restrictions won’t allow it.” If you are

Brush up your German language skills. Even a very limited knowledge of German will make your time here so much better. Download a free language app. Practice phrases. Learn nouns. Pull in family members or friends to join you. Do it every day, for 10 minutes a day. You’ll be amazed at how much you learn in a short time. And, when you
can travel again, you’ll be delighted at how joyful it feels to have a grammatically questionable conversation with a local. Seriously.

German neighborhood A-Z scavenger hunt. This is another way to learn and have fun at the same time. Grab a dictionary (or a translation app) and a notebook. Go outside, start observing, and start writing down German nouns. For example, “A” is for Apfel (apple), B is for “Baum” (tree), and so on. First one to find 24 out of 26 letters wins! Why 24? Because finding anything that starts with an “X” or a “Y” in German

Make a gratitude list for every place you’ve ever traveled. After you’ve come inside and refreshed yourself with a nice bottle of Quellwasser (feel free to use that one for your scavenger hunt), gather with your loved ones for a quick trip down memory lane. It’s astonishing how frequently we forget all the cool places to which we’ve traveled. So create a gratitude list, in which you write down your favorite places – large and small – and at least one thing you loved about those places. Put the list somewhere prominent. Look at it often. In so doing, you will be reminded that you have an explorer’s heart, no matter what the current circumstances might dictate. Soon enough, you’ll be out there again.
