Jones, recently sat down to reflect on his first 100 days as commander and shared his vision for the future for Ramstein AB as the global gateway. Q: What would you like the members of Team Ramstein to know about you and your overall vision as the recently appointed commander of the 86th Airlift Wing?

Ramstein-Miesenbach hosts National Day of Mourning ceremony

U.S. Air Force Col. Matthew Bartlett, 435th Air Expeditionary Wing vice commander, attended on behalf of RAB along with other leadership teams from the Kaiserslautern Military Community, German first responders, and members from the local community. “It is important we come together as nations to honor and remember those who have fallen from war and tragedies in the past,” Bartlett said. “We honor them now as partners from many countries who are seeking peace and trying to prevent conflicts such as the ones the world has already witnessed.” The National Day of Mourning, also known as Volkstrauertag, is a silent tribune to commemorate service members and civilians from all nations who have lost their lives in war and victims of violent oppression. This ceremony,
which is one of many held across Germany, has occurred every year since 1952 two Sundays before the first Sunday of Advent. “This commemoration is a critically important sign of friend-
ship and reconciliation,” said Ralf Hechler, Union Community of Ramstein-Miesenbach mayor. “The common remembrance and the common mourning is the foundation for a peaceful future.”

November 25, 2022 100 DAYS from page 1 I want to thank our family members as well for the sacrifices they are making. Our family members did not raise their right hand to serve, but I believe they are serving simply because they chose to love an Airman. It’s not easy to move to Europe and be so far away from family and worry about jobs, housing, school, and community. The mission here is no-fail and family members support their servicemembers during a consistently high ops tempo. But there is one reason we were sent here, and that’s to execute a mission. Together, we are going to concentrate on executing our mission today and preparing for future operations, while continuing to take care of our Airmen and their families. Strong relationships with our host nation partners are also essential to our mission. I plan to improve on our already fantastic relationships with our allies and partners to ensure we are good partners and will continue to strengthen those relationships. I also want to strengthen our internal culture. My vision is that each of us is a human being that deserves to be treated with dignity and respect – that is the foundation of the culture I want to ensure. That doesn’t mean we will always get along and agree about everything, but whatever we go through, we are going to treat each other with dignity and respect. Finally, I believe we should always strive to leave a place, job, or base better than when we arrived – and I know together we will achieve that challenging goal during our time here. Q: What are your goals as the 86th AW commander? A: We have an absolutely nofail mission at this base. My goal is
to continue to execute what we are tasked with doing today and ensure our country has every confidence we will get it done. Part of that is to ensure we are prepared for any future fight. I’m not talking five to 10 years from now, but potentially 20 years down the road. I think the atmosphere will be complex and dynamic, and we have to maintain our readiness to ensure we have the resources and a strategic mindset moving forward. The world has changed, and we must concentrate on the things we will need to do with our allies and partners in the future. It’s all about the readiness of our Airmen, Guardians, civilians, and families. My goal is to ensure we are prepared — and I have no doubt in the abilities of our Airmen and Guardians to execute the mission. Q: With that in mind, what are your expectations for members of Team Ramstein? (military members, civilians, family members) A: I expect us all to uphold our core values of integrity, excellence, and selfless service – that’s what we’re all about. We have the most talented force in the history of our nation, and I trust them. I’m going to ask them to step out and take risks. We might make mistakes, and mistakes are ok, but as long as we have a positive attitude, pride, and passion about what we are doing, I think we’ll be fine. We won’t live by any mistake. We’ll get up together, dust ourselves off and move forward. I also expect to have critical thinkers. No longer can we afford to have people who just take orders and execute. We have to be able to assess a scenario and understand complex and diverse solutions and be able to apply these. We talk in terms of multi-capable Airmen and different
things, but we really need people to have confidence in their abilities and execute. Q: When you first assumed command, you called for continued building of adaptive Airmen and Guardians. Why is that so important? A: The future is uncertain. Gen. Charles Q. Brown, Jr., the Chief of Staff of the Air Force, gave us a mandate that said, ‘accelerate change or lose.’ One thing we do not do is lose. That’s not acceptable. I think we need to be prepared, and that means being adaptive. You’ve heard of agile combat employment, and you’ve heard of multi-capable Airmen – these mean we need to be adaptable to any given scenario and prepared to both defend the base and project combat power across the globe. I believe we have the most professional enlisted force the world has ever seen, and we have a topnotch officer corps. Together, we have innovative and creative units who execute the mission with excellence, whether it’s in this theater of operations or across the globe. Q: After your immersion with members and mission partners of the 86th AW, what stood out? A: That’s easy. They were very proud of what they did in Operation Allies Refuge, and they should be. I could see the pride and passion of each member for what they put forward. They can also see the impact they had in operations across the theater, whether it was in Afghanistan or supporting our allies and partners in this region right now. They really understand the value they add with their inputs. I want to continue that. From the smallest task to the largest task, up to actually flying the
Page 3 operational mission or deploying on a front line somewhere, everyone needs to understand their importance to the fight. That pride in what they do is there, I want them to continue to understand how valuable they are to this installation. Q: In your first 100 days, what have you seen that has worked and what do you see that needs improvement? A: I have seen an amazing team that works, and I trust in our Airmen and have every confidence that they are executing the mission and getting it done well. I also think we can always work on things and get better. One of the things we can work on is communication across our units, communication from our senior leaders down to our youngest Airmen and communication from our wing to the numbered Air Force to the major command. Communication can always be better. I think as communication gets better; we reduce the risk of not being able to complete our mission across the theater. I want my team to know that nothing is more important than their safety to me. I don’t want to see DUIs. I’ve seen those numbers go up and I am disappointed. To me, one is too many. We need to uphold standards and discipline. We also need to be aware of things when we go out and have a plan, or if the plan changes, we have a good backup plan. We need to be good wingmen and trust our brothers and sisters enough to make a call to say, ‘hey my plans fell through, help me out.’ This is something we are focusing on to find solutions. We are going to combat that together. Additionally, I want to focus on resiliency. We are entering the winter months, a time where we get together to celebrate different holidays, but we’re also a long
way from home. We have an operations tempo that is higher than many other places. We are asking our teammates to do a lot, and that means there is a lot of stress. I want us to connect with each other as teammates, brothers, sisters, and wingmen. I don’t want to lose anyone to suicide. When I hear about suicides, I always wonder what more could have been done. I won’t accept the fact that we’ve done all we can. We’re going to continue to look for ways to reach people and bring them in or meet them where they are. Q: Ramstein Airmen consistently maintain some of the highest operations tempo across the Department of Defense, especially in the last several years. What can we do moving forward to prioritize and take care of the mental health of our subordinates, peers and ourselves? A: We have programs like Life Talk, where we don’t wear the rank. It’s closed-door and what goes on will stay in there and you can just talk. There are people who want to utilize the chaplain, and there are people who don’t want to utilize the chaplain and the same with mental health. We are charged with taking care of our wingmen, and we have first sergeants and supervisors to help, but the best resources are those around you. There are a plethora of options available, and hopefully our Airmen feel comfortable talking when times are tough. We are here to support you. Life Talk occurs the 1st and 3rd Monday at 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. at the Military and Family Readiness Center on Ramstein Air Base. All ranks are welcome, and no uniforms are required. Advent, advent — A cheerful holiday season
Advent is a very special time full of century-old traditions and modern customs in Germany. The noun “advent” refers to ‘a coming into place, view or being; arrival.’ More commonly the term is used to describe the season and the four weeks leading up to Christmas.
Advent w reath
One of the older customs is that of the “Adventskranz,” a wreath bound out of fir branches and decorated with four candles. The first candle is lit on the fourth Sunday prior to Christmas, this year it takes place on Nov. 27. The second candle is lit on the following Sunday and so forth until Christmas. A children’s song goes
like this: “Advent, Advent, ein Lichtlein brennt. Erst eins, dann zwei, dann drei, dann vier. Dann steht das Christkind an der Tür!” (Advent, Advent, a light is burning. First one, then two, then three, then four. Then the Christ Child is at the door!) In the Pfalz region the Christ Child also bakes cookies. There is a saying that if the sky turns red or pink in the morning or evening during the Advent season, then the Christ Child is busy baking Christmas cookies. Guten Appetit!

Advent calendar
Wish list for the Christ Child (or Santa)
Another fun-filled tradition, especially loved by younger (and maybe even older) children is the Advent calendar. The calendar can be store bought filled with chocolate, sweets or other small surprises or just as well be homemade using small jute sacks, colorful boxes, cloth pockets sewn onto textile backgrounds or in any other creative style. The individual days are marked with numbers from one to 24 and starting on Dec. 1,
St. Nicholas
Dec. 6 marks the arrival of St. Nicholas who visits children and fills their freshly shined shoes with small presents such as chocolate, fruits, nuts or small toys. The tradition dates to the fourth century when Bishop Nicholas of Myra (now in Turkey) brought fruits, nuts and tangerines to poor families.
Children that would like to send their holiday wishes to a “designated representative,” such as the Christ Child in Germany or possibly to Santa Claus, can do so using the Wish List on page 12.
Christmas Markets
The Weihnachtsmarkt or Christkindlsmarkt are not to
be forgotten, which take place in towns and cities around the country. One of the most famous markets is the Weihnachtsmarkt in Trier, Rheinland-Pfalz, but other venues, such as medieval markets taking place in castles have become popular in recent years. The Christmas market in Kaiserslautern near Stiftskirche and Schillerplatz will be held from Nov. 21 to Dec. 23. The annual Cultural Market, located within the Fruchthalle is taking place from Nov. 25 to Dec. 18. Cheerfully decorated wooden booths offer handcrafted gifts, decorations, toys, candles and ornaments. Delicious Lebkuchen (gingerbread), Rostbratwurst, crepes and sweets will let your mouth water and drinks such as spicy Glühwein (mulled wine), punch and hot chocolate will keep visitors warm on cold winter evenings, while the aroma of cinnamon, cloves and oranges, and scented candles will lift you into the holiday spirit.
Cheerfully decorated cities Shops, streets and private houses are brightly decorated with lights, decorated indoor and outdoor trees and colorful ornaments as in many other countries around the world. Glamorously decorated stores are packed with presents to be bought, gifts to be wrapped and special seasonal dishes are on offer.
Heiligabend / Christmas Eve Finally, on Christmas Eve, families traditionally meet for a light dinner and wait for the gentle tingling of a bell. This marks the arrival of the Christkind (Christ child) or the Weihnachtsmann (similar to Santa Claus) who brings children gifts. Some families sing Christmas carols together, others might visit a church service, while it has become popular for the younger folks to head out to Christmas parties after exchanging gifts.

I have every confidence that we are executing our mission every day.” Over the past year, Sanem provided 26 fuels support equipment items, 52 vehicles for DLA/DS disposal, and 170 vehicles for different missions. During last year’s Operation Allies Refuge, they provided the Air Force with 301 Basic Expeditionary Airfield Resources increments and 37 vehicles. “We came out to get a better perspective of the assets we currently have,” Fischer said. “When we connect with the team down here, everyone understands the mission better. From the Airmen to the civilians and the local national team, they get a better understanding of what they bring to the mission at Ramstein.”

SANEM, Luxembourg — U.S. Air Force Brig. Gen. Otis C. Jones, 86th Airlift Wing commander, Renae Fischer, 86th AW vice director, and other Airmen assigned to the 86th AW visited the U.S. Air Forces in Europe’s Central Region Storage Facility in Sanem, Luxembourg, Nov. 9. The intent of the visit was to showcase the CRSF and to highlight the strong relationship between the Warehouses Service Agency site management team and Ramstein’s 86th Materiel Maintenance Squadron, an Air Force unit responsible for managing 98 percent of USAFE’s War Reserve Materiel. The Sanem warehouse stores pre-positioned vehicles and equip-
ment, to include Aerospace Ground Equipment, Basic Expeditionary Airfield Resources, fuels support equipment, and Rapid Airfield Damage Repair equipment. It is strategically located and has an infrastructure of warehouses, repair, maintenance and services shops. The Warehouses Service Agency works with both the United States Air Force and Luxembourg’s Ministry of Defense to provide warehousing, logistical support and maintenance services for military equipment and other various goods and merchandise. “It is important as a leadership team that we not only understand the capacity that comes with this location, but to see the layout and meet the team that is running this,” Jones said. “We have a great team of total-force Airmen and

Garrison logistics earns near perfect score during inspection by Nicole Alberico U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz lived up to its website motto of “The Army’s #1 Garrison in Europe” when a recent biennial inspection into its logistics program earned nearly perfect scores in three categories. “U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz scored commendable across all three sections and Army Sustainment Command G4 stated this was the best inspection they have seen in two years across 63 installations,” said Garrison Commander Col. Reid E. Furman. “The inspection team stated they rarely see an S4 Operations section score 100.” In addition to S4’s 100 percent score, the garrison’s property books also earned a 100 percent and the Command Maintenance Discipline Program earned a commendable 99 percent. In an act of congratulations and a job well done, Furman presented commander coins to members of the 405th Army Field Support Brigade’s garrison Logistics Readiness Center on Nov. 8. “Credit here goes to LRC Director Mr. Greg Terry and his team for the outstanding support and seamless logistics integration that they provide from across the garrison,” said Furman. “The inspection team specifically highlighted the strong relationship between the LRC and the garrison.” Terry agreed. amazing LRC team that was ever assembled, we have the greatest working relationship that a LRC could have with their garrison which means we both support each other,” said Terry. According to Terry, overseas especially, garrison’s often rely on a memorandum of understanding for logistics readiness. He said that even though the LRC team isn’t a direct garrison asset, he said they never felt as just a tenant unit. “We’re treated like full family members,” he added. Terry said they did “fairly well” in 2019, and his team took the results from the last inspection and concentrated on not only improving, but also ensuring to maintain what was working. According to Furman, the inspectors were particularly impressed with the LRC’s “Command Supply Discipline Program’s Boot Camp Training Slides.” Inspectors were so impressed, the deck and training method will soon become standard training for 63 installations across the Army, according to Terry. Wade Orr, the supply and services chief who created the boot camp slides, has been either working command supply programs or assessing the programs for more than 15 years. In regard to his boot camp deck, Orr said he didn’t do anything special. “All I did was extract the data and put it in a training document to where people could see how we go about doing business.” Orr said the training simply ties together Army regulations. “I’m a regulation nerd. I actually read the regulations to see what’s entailed. And sometimes one regulation will lead to another one and to another one. And at some point, you just draw out the information and come up with a way to put it together.” The training may look familiar to the more than 100 garrison employees who, including this writer, signs a hand receipt as Orr’s boot camp is required training.

RAB post office delivers, you can too Story and photo by Senior Airman Andrew Bertain 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs As the 2022 holiday season arrives, the Ramstein Air Base Post Offices prepare for war. During the holidays, the post office team experiences a massive influx of packages shipped in and out of Ramstein AB. “Typically, throughout the year, our daily incoming shipments contain between 200 to 400 packages,” explained Airman 1st Class Hunter Shoup, 786th Force Support Squadron military postal clerk. “However, during the holidays, this number increases to around 600 to 1,000 packages every day of the week.” Some postal workers even recall experiencing as much as 1,300 daily package shipments in prior years. The workload multiplies but the post office manning does not multiply with it. So the post offices open their doors for volunteers to help process this massive influx in shipments.
“Volunteers are instrumental to the mission year-round, but especially during this time of year,” said Master Sgt. John Grijaldo, 786th FSS postmaster. “Throughout the year, we will have three to five volunteers on rotation, but for the holiday season we hope to have around 35 to 50 volunteers on rotation.” The post offices do incentivize any DOD identification card holders to volunteer year-round. This offers anyone the chance to help the base with an essential mission and rewards those who help with “fast passes,” which are tickets to the front of the lines at the post office so you don’t have to worry about long holiday wait times. Even if you are not a volunteer, there are still many things you can do to help the post office help you. One thing you can do to help yourself and the postal clerks is to make sure you ship your packages out in time. The post office has posted “mailout date” charts, which recommend when you should mail
your package to arrive before Dec. 25th based on what mailing class you are using. • • • •

Starting Nov. 14, patrons that are wanting to ship mail out will be required to fill out their customs forms online, using usps.com, before bringing their package in to be shipped. This new requirement saves time for the postal clerks, customers and eases long wait times. Finally, the last thing you can do to cut down wait times is to show up to collect your packages only after you receive the “AMPS” notification sent to your email. Sometimes your shipment tracker will alert you on the delivery of your package, however, that does not mean the base post office has been able to process and bring it to the location for you to pick up. As this holiday season kicks off, the postmaster wanted to thank everyone involved with completing this mission, and thank Team Ramstein for their patience as the post office fights the good fight. “Our team works hard all year long, but this time of year is our superbowl,” said Grijaldo. “We are doing everything we can to make
sure the packages get to where they’re going as fast as we can so everyone can have better holidays. 435 CTS facilitates runway rubber, paint removal, re-striping
A local national assigned to the 435th Construction and Training Squadron re-stripes the runway at Bezmer Air Base, Bulgaria, Oct. 25. This project aims to significantly reduce foreign object debris hazards to aircraft and provide clearer air traffic visual aids aligning with European Union Aviation Safety Agency standards.
The request for the 6-week project was received after Bezmer AB was identified as an ideal candidate for upgrades that could also serve as a feasible location for fighter aircraft to partake in combined training missions and operations. “The hardest part of this was the logistics of getting all of our equipment to this area,” said Ruediger Streissel, 435th CTS chief operations. “The group had to convoy through three countries for over 25 hours.” Local nationals assigned to the

435th CTS traveled with 11 vehicles to Bezmer AB to remove and repaint the existing markings on the runway, hammer heads, taxiways and ramps. The previous airfield markings were made using a non-standard product that separated from the pavement surface and posed a significant FOD hazard to U.S. Air Force fighter aircraft. “This project was challenging because of the amount of work done in a relatively tight time frame of just 6 weeks,” Streissel said. “Going into this we had little
to no experience working with the material of the existing markings, air traffic was not allowed to be disrupted, and weather conditions had to be taken into account.” During the project, 140 tons of old stripping material was removed and replaced with 50 pounds of retroreflective glass beads and 2,287 gallons of paint. This project not only further develops relationships with NATO Allies, but it enables future operations from a strategic location while helping the Bulgarian air force transition to F-16 aircraft.
“Taking part in this project improves the capabilities of our partners,” said Lt. Col. Grant Harwell, 435th Construction and Training Squadron commander. “The Bulgarian air force will be transitioning to F-16s from legacy fighter aircraft at this location, so while their current aircraft are not susceptible to FOD concerns this project eliminates those future hazards.” The 435th CTS engineers and construction teams regularly deploy support to NATO Allies and partners in similar missions.

RAB partners with FAA, opens new maintenance facility

The facility is the first of its kind outside of the U.S. and will allow eligible service members an opportunity to train and test for their A&P certificate from the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration. The training facility, which has been in the works for about three years, was inspected and certified today by the FAA to begin offering trainings to assist service members in their pursuit of professional development. “This facility will help these individuals in the maintenance community by opening a world of possibilities with this certificate,” said Mark Sawyer, FAA principal inspector. “This helps people translate their experience beyond their
military career and into the private sector.” Selected participants will have the opportunity to obtain handson training on systems such as inspections, airframe repair and servicing, and engine operation. Once training course is complete, participants will then be able to test for their A&P certificate. “This is the most sought-after certificate in the maintenance community,” said U.S. Air Force Master Sgt. Jaime Febus, 86th Maintenance Group Airframe and Powerplant program manager. “My purpose throughout this process has been to find a way to help members achieve their goals and set them up for success now and their post military career.” The facility is scheduled to start training classes within the first quarter of 2023. Recycling for the future

by Eulalie Ruelle U.S. Army Garrison Benelux Environmental Division Reduce, Reuse, Recycle: You may have heard these words since childhood, or at least over the last few years as public awareness of environmental issues has increased. But have you ever stopped to think about the ways we can incor-
porate the principle of the “Three Rs” into our daily lives? Over the last few years, the negative impacts our present way of life has on the planet have been well documented through awareness campaigns and in the media. The extraction and processing of the materials, fuels and food needed for our day-to-day life is currently responsible for half of the
total global greenhouse gas emissions. Moreover, the gas emissions from the production of plastics are expected to double in a few decades if nothing changes. It has been estimated that if consumption continues at its current rate, given rising population levels, by 2050 three planets would be needed to sustainably support the needs of the Earth’s population.
Page 17 One way to help tackle these issues is through recycling and the implementation of a circular economy. A circular economy is a model of production and consumption involving reusing, repairing, sharing, leasing, refurbishing and recycling existing products and materials for as long as possible. The recycling rate has risen to 34 percent in the U.S. and 46 percent in the European Union, but it needs to continue to grow and improve. For the U.S. Army, an executive order has set recycling targets at 50 percent for fiscal year 25 and 75 percent for fiscal year 30. Here at U.S. Army Garrison Benelux, we are already exceeding those expectations. The garrison recycled 81.6 percent of its waste in fiscal year 22, and we intend to continue improving on this achievement in the future. As individuals, there are a lot of simple things we can do every day to reduce our consumption of goods and generation of trash. Reduce • The best place to start is to buy less stuff. Before purchasing something, ask yourself whether you really need the item, or if it will end up being used once or twice before sitting abandoned in a cupboard or thrown in the trash. • Buy local and organic food to reduce consumption of fuel and pesticides. • Buy in bulk to reduce overall packaging waste. One large bottle uses less plastic than two smaller ones. Some products, such as fruit and vegetables, can be purchased with no packaging at all. • Another source of trash is our takeaway or on-the-go food.
To avoid generating waste, try bringing your own reusable coffee cup, grocery bags, water bottle and metal or wooden cutlery rather than using disposable ones. Reuse • There are a lot of steps you can try before throwing away an item. Put your imagination to good use-try to upcycle by repainting, altering, or repurposing old items. • If you have a broken item, perhaps you could have it repaired or even fix it yourself. If you can reuse it and do not need to buy a new one, it will be better for the planet but also for your wallet. • Where possible, shop at secondhand stores. This prevents items from ending up in the landfill and can also save you money. There is almost certainly a secondhand store on your installation or nearby where you can buy or donate items. Recycle • If no other option is suitable, recycle your item. • Make sure you sort your recyclables into the appropriate bins. Some materials or larger items may need to be taken to the recycling center. • Throwing items in the trash should only be done as a last resort. Recycling is not a one-day eventit’s important every day! But over the next two weeks, particularly on America Recycles Day on Nov. 15 and during the European Week for Waste Reduction from Nov. 19 to 27, be aware of your waste and try to improve one small thing every day.

Multiply that by the number of U.S. service members on Ramstein Air Base, along with Ramstein’s geographically separated units, that’s more than 320,000 teeth that the 86th Dental Squadron Airmen are responsible for. With the large population, the 86th DS is constantly working to keep service members healthy and maintain military standards. Poor dental health can increase the risk for serious conditions, potentially affecting a person’s ability to deploy, travel, or conduct their day-to-day job. “Military members who are flagged as a dental Class 3 means they are unqualified for worldwide travel,” said Senior Airman Bailey Soeder, 86th DS dental assistant. “Our goal is to keep that classification as low as possible and get patients in and taken care of to make them qualified again.” To help keep Ramstein mission-ready the clinic can see two to three thousand patients and complete 8,000-10,000 procedures, on average, in one month. “During these appointments we conduct health screenings, take x-rays and, of course, clean teeth,” said Soeder. “The screenings allow us to catch and prevent any acute and painful dental problems that would require immediate treatment.” Schroder stressed that regular at-home dental care and check-

Bryan Caine, 86th DS general dentist. “It is critical that our service members receive regular dental care.” The clinic is made up of dentists, dental specialists, dental hygienists, dental technicians, and dental lab techs, which are all a huge part of the team that provides Ramstein’s service members quality dental care. “It is entirely a team approach at the dental clinic and this broad range of specialties allows us to offer a full-scope of emergency and routine services to members,” Caine said. “These services are similar to a civilian dental practice, with the exception of elective procedures.”

While the 86th DS primarily supports the active duty population, they also have two pediatric dentists who provide dental care to dependent children up to seven years old, said Caine. “As a military dentist, I am very fortunate to be able to focus entirely on providing dental services that are in the best interest of my patients.” The 86th DS works hard to ensure the KMC and Team Ramstein maintain optimal oral health, keeping the mission as the global gateway functioning to the fullest. “Oral hygiene affects your whole body,” said Soeder. “Meeting the Airmen that make up this base and being able to make a difference in someone’s oral hygiene is what I enjoy most about my position. We all work together to put the bite in the fight.”

And defense health officials are working to dispel the negative concept of aging. “There is a common misperception that it is normal in the aging process to have poor health, heart disease, obesity, type 2 diabetes, dementia, and other chronic diseases. This couldn’t be further from the truth,” said U.S. Air Force Col. (Dr.) Mary Anne Kiel, who chairs the Defense Health Agency Primary Care Clinical Community. “When lifestyle changes are adopted by our patients using an evidence-based approach, chronic disease can be prevented or delayed by 10-15 years compared to the average. This leads to extra health and years that our patients can enjoy,” Kiel said. Lifestyle adjustments can prolong your life Kiel also serves as chair of Air Force Lifestyle & Performance Medicine and emphasizes how lifestyle choices impact health well into advanced years. “Patients can make a personal choice at any age to optimize their health and extend their longevity by changing their nutrition to a predominantly plant-based diet, minimizing processed foods, doing physical activity daily, pursuing restorative sleep, avoiding risky substances, managing stress, and cultivating positive social connections,” Kiel advised. In addition to avoiding risky behaviors, such as smoking and too much alcohol, lowering your stress levels and good sleep hygiene are crucial to staying healthy as you age. “Improved sleep can produce almost instantaneous results for improved mental health, pain levels, and risk for infectious disease, in addition to reducing the risk of dementia and overall rates of death,” Kiel said. Similarly, “a revolutionized diet and physical activity regimen can produce rapid changes to the body’s risk for cardiovascular events, cancer, and diabetes,” she noted. “One of the constant sayings I heard while going through physical therapy training school was ’Motion is lotion,’” Werner said. “Basically, the more you move, the more you can move. This is true in resolving pain in younger patients, as well as helping to ensure healthy aging and independence in aging populations,” she added. One of the biggest changes Werner said she has seen in treating the senior population is “the emphasis on strengthening and functional activities.” “Once the thought was that elderly patients are fragile, but we have seen in recent research that elderly individuals respond well to weight
training and can increase their bone density resulting in decreased risk of fracture,” Werner said. Fall prevention is also important for older adults. “Falls are the leading cause of fatal accidents in older adults and the leading cause of trauma-related hospitalizations in older adults” Roberts said. One of the best ways to improve balance is to start a walking program, she suggested, or work your balance through such evidence-based community-based exercise programs. This could include: • Tai Chi, a series of gentle physical exercises and stretches that each flow into the next, ensuring constant motion. • Otago, a series of 17 strength and balance exercises delivered by a physical therapist in the home that reduces falls between 35 and 40 percent. • Stay Active, a series for endurance, strength, balance, and stretching. • Independent for Life, a series that includes warm-up, aerobics, balance, strength training, and stretching exercises that can be done in a seated or standing position. Fitness checks track general mobility, arm strength and leg strength. “Studies have shown that no matter what our age, making nutrition and other lifestyle changes can have dramatic impacts by extending our lifespans and improving our quality of life,” Kiel said, adding: “You’re never too old to make a change.”

HAHN from Page 1 and even at intersections in the middle of the woods. It seems that Hahn is both everywhere and nowhere at once. There is good reason for the confusion. Hahn Airport (HHN) — formally named Frankfurt Hahn Airport — is tucked away in the woods and farmlands of central Rhineland-Pfalz. It is roughly an hour and a half drive west of the city of Frankfurt, and a two hour bus ride from Frankfurt airport. Hahn became a public airport in the 1990s, but “Frankfurt” was added to the beginning of the name in 2001 when Ryanair began using the facility for its famous low-cost flights. A year later, Lufthansa sued Ryanair for false advertising since “Frankfurt” is really 120km away. But the case was settled under the Inside Frankfurt Hahn Airport Terminal
requirement that Ryanair blatantly state the distance to Frankfurt. Hahn has struggled financially, with numerous airlines and cargo carriers choosing to move operations away to more convenient airports. As recently as 2020 even Ryanair – Hahn’s biggest proponent – moved operations to Frankfurt. After filing for bankruptcy last year, the airport was bought by an investment firm and appears to be on a track toward revival. With both Wizz Air and Ryan Air, who moved back to Hahn, operating low-cost flights it can be a great airport to find good deals. It is a small place, with few conveniences, but the long term parking is cheap. That is the key; you are looking at flights from Hahn for cost-savings not amenities. options, and is virtually inaccessible via public transportation. Hahn is roughly an hour and fifteen-minute drive from most of the KMC — and the airport is small which can save walking time. But the roads to Hahn are small, windy, and can get treacherous in the winter. There is a historical reason for the inconvenient location. Hahn was first built as a military base in 1951 with American forces taking over the following year. The 50th Fighter Bomber Wing was located at Hahn for 35 years during the heart of the Cold War. Both F-4s and F-15s were stationed there, along with a tactical missile unit. When the U.S. Air Force returned the airport to the German government in 1993, it was reimagined as a new commercial airport. In 1996 the old base housing and support areas were refurbished for the Rhineland-Pfalz Polizei training center and university.
Currently, Wizz Air is offering flights from Hahn a couple days a week to various locations in the Balkans. Ryan Air offers more variety of locations; destinations include Morocco, the UK, Italy, Spain, Portugal, and Croatia. There are also more seasonal routes in the summer. Wizz Air and Ryan Air can be good deals when booked well in advance, and when consideration is taken for packing. Remember, you will be paying extra for overhead luggage, checked bags, and even food. Rates on discount airlines can end up comparable to a standard carrier. But if you can pack light and don’t need all the bells and whistles of a major airport, then Hahn airport can be a great option. So, next time you randomly see an unexpected sign for Hahn – hours away in the middle of nowhere – think of how it could be the gateway to your next cheap getaway.
