Holiday crafts for the whole family to enjoy by Azure Hall Contributing writer

Picture Frame Wreath These wreaths will look great hanging on a front door or standing on a mantle. Create them for your own home or to give as a gift. » 8-by-10-inch picture frame » Paint brushes » White priming paint » Red or green craft paint » Wired ribbon » Hot glue gun and hot glue » Thin white ribbon » 3 miniature Christmas tree ball ornaments Paint frame with white primer and allow to dry. Paint with craft paint and allow to dry. Tie wired ribbon into a bow and hot glue to the top front of the picture frame. Cut white ribbon into three separate 8-inch strips, fold in half, loop and tie through balls. Hot glue the knots of the white ribbons to the top back of the frame, allowing clubs to hang over the top front of the frame. Hang and enjoy. Craft submitted by Azure Hall

Arts and crafts are a great way for families to bond over wholesome fun. There is no better

time to create together than the holiday season. Children get the chance to make gifts to give to

loved ones, parents get pieces of art that symbolize lasting memories and the whole family gets

quality time together. Use these craft ideas to bring your family together this winter.

Hand-Painted Holiday Village Rather than purchase a premade holiday village, create one with your family. Children choose their favorite white porcelain houses and buildings, usually for about a dollar apiece, and paint their own tabletop town. Add new trinkets, such as a mirror lake, each year. » Newspaper » White porcelain buildings » Craft paint, multiple colors » Paintbrushes » Cotton balls Cover tabletop in newspaper. Paint buildings with craft paint and set out to dry. While paint is drying, pull apart the cotton balls until they are wisps. Once the buildings are dry, arrange in desired order on top of the cotton wisps to create a wintery display.

Mason Jar Memory Globe This photo globe makes a great seasonal gift for family members and can be used for years to come. » Cotton balls » Mason jar » Silver glitter » Photos » Clear tape » Festive ribbon » Glue Pull apart cotton balls until they are wisps. Place cotton into the bottom of the mason jar and sprinkle in glitter. Adhere the back of the photo with tape to the inside back of the jar, so the photo faces into the jar. Glue ribbon to the circumference of the top of the jar.

Candy Cane Reindeer These edible reindeer can be used to decorate your Christmas tree, to give to friends and family, or for children to hand out to classmates and teachers. » Brown pipe cleaners » Candy canes » Craft glue » Googley eyes » Red buttons Cut pipe cleaners into 6-inch strips. Wrap strips around the base of the candy cane in a spiral, then remove. Glue googley eyes to the front of the curve of the candy cane, like eyes on a face. Glue button below eyes to look like a nose. Wrap pipe cleaner around the top of the curve of the candy cane as antlers. Enjoy yourself and share with friends.

Gumdrop Snowflakes This simple craft is the perfect treat for your child to take into class. It is simple and sweet, and uses two important ingredients for crafts with kids. » Colored toothpicks » Craft glue » Sugared gumdrop candies » String Glue two toothpicks together in the shape of a cross. Glue two more toothpicks together in the shape of an X. Glue all four toothpicks together in then shape of a star. Allow all glue to dry. Line the toothpicks with gumdrops. Tie string around the center in a loop to be able to display snowflakes before enjoying as a snack.

n i e Glühw by Leonie Milde Contributing writer Glühwein, which literally translates to “glow wine,” is a staple at every outdoor event throughout the winter months. This holiday season will be a little different due to the Covid19 situation. There probably won’t be any Christmas markets due to social distancing regulations. But don’t fret, you can still enjoy a cup of German Christmas Joy. Here are six ways to make it at home: all you need to do is heat the wine, making sure it never boils or the alcohol will boil away. Either add all ingredients straight to the wine or put them in a tea filter and let it sit for at least half an hour before reheating. Pour through a strainer or take out bag of spices. Serve hot.

Red Classic You can never go wrong with a classic red wine and cinnamon! • 1 bottle of dry red wine of choice • 1 orange, sliced • 2 sticks of cinnamon • 3 cloves • 2 - 3 tablespoons honey, agave syrup or sugar

Photo by Oksana Shufrych / Shutterstock.com

Red Cranberry If you like sweet and fruity drinks, this variation was made for you. • 1 bottle of dry red wine of choice • 17 ounces cranberry juice • 2-3 ounces orange liquor (Cointreau or Grand Marnier) • 2 cinnamon sticks • 1 apple, sliced • optional: dried cranberries (add before serving)

Apple wine Being a Hessian staple, this could not be missing on my list. Apple wine is far less sweet than one would presume and generally diluted with either lemonade or water so don’t leave that step out or it may taste too bitter. • 1 bottle of apple wine of choice • 3-4 ounces water • 3 tablespoon sugar • 3 cloves • 2 lemons, sliced

White vanilla Try a white take on the classic mulled wine. • 1 bottle of dry, white wine of choice • 1 cup orange juice • 1 teaspoon cloves • 2 star anise pods • 1 teaspoon cinnamon • 1 tablespoon “gingerbread spice” (look for ‘Lebkuchengewürz’ at any German supermarket) • 1 vanilla bean • 3-4 tablespoons sugar, honey or agave nectar

Make the most of winter squash season by Ashley Dobson Contributing writer

It’s winter squash season in Germany. Known as Kürbis, the same German word used for pumpkin, you can find several varieties filling the baskets at any local grocery store or commissary and lining the stands at the famers’ markets around town. Winter squashes are distinguished from summer squashes not because of the time of year they are grown and sold but because of when they are best to eat. Right now they have matured fully and their skins have developed a tough rind. This rind protects them and allows them to be stored throughout the winter, thus “winter squash.” While there are some winter squashes common in America that can’t be found in Germany, we are particularly lucky because two of the most delicious squashes are the most prevalent over here — hokkaido squash and butternut squash. Butternut squash is sweet and nutty with a firm texture similar to that of a potato. Hokkaido squash, also known as Red Kuri, looks like a mini pumpkin and is sweet, moist and dense. The skin is edible and does not need to be peeled. Both of these squashes are versatile and can be used in a variety of recipes to enjoy all winter long. Spiced hokkaido squash soup You can’t spend a holiday season in Germany without having at least one bowl of hokkaido squash soup. This is a bit labor intensive, but every spoonful will be worth it. Start to finish: 60 minutes Servings: 6

• 1 medium onion, chopped • 3 tablespoons olive oil • 1 hokkaido squash, de-seeded and cut into pieces • 2 small potatoes, peeled and cut into pieces • 2 cloves garlic, chopped • 2 teaspoons curry powder • 1 teaspoon ground coriander • 1/2 teaspoon ground ginger • 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon • 6 cups chicken stock • Salt and pepper, to taste Over medium heat, gently saute chopped onions with olive oil in a large saucepan until soft. Add the chopped hokkaido squash, potatoes, garlic and the four spices to the pan. Cook for about 10 minutes. Pour in the chicken stock. Begin by just covering the top of the hokkaido pieces with the stock. If you feel it is too thick, you can add in more later. Cover and simmer until the squash and potatoes are tender and soft. This should take about 10 to 12 minutes. Using a hand blender in the pan, puree the squash and potatoes until smooth and creamy. Add in more chicken stock to achieve desired soup texture. Add salt and pepper to taste. Ladle the soup into bowls. You can garnish with creme fraiche and croutons if you so choose. Recipe from www.LePetitOgre.com

Southwestern stuffed hokkaido squash Now you can mix the taste of home with this German specialty squash. This recipe is also easily converted to a vegetarian dish just by taking out the ground turkey. Start to finish: 90 minutes Servings: 4

• • • •

2 hokkaido squashes 1 pound ground turkey 1 small onion, chopped 1/2 medium red bell pepper, chopped • 1 clove garlic, minced • 1 tablespoon chili powder • 1 teaspoon ground cumin • 2 cups cherry tomatoes, chopped • 15-ounce can black beans • 1/2 teaspoon salt • Hot red pepper sauce, to taste • 1 cup shredded Swiss cheese Preheat oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit or 190 degrees Celsius. Lightly coat a large baking sheet with cooking spray. Cut the hokkaido squashes in half horizontally. Scoop out and discard seeds. Place the squash cut side down on the prepared baking sheet. Bake until tender, between 30 and 45 minutes. While the squash is cooking, lightly coat a large skillet with cooking spray and heat over medium. Add the ground turkey and cook until lightly browned. Add onion and bell pepper to the skillet, stirring often, and cooking until softened. Stir in garlic, chili powder and cumin for about 30 seconds. Stir in tomatoes, beans, salt and several dashes of hot sauce. Cover, reduce heat and simmer until the tomatoes are broken down. This should take between 10 and 12 minutes. When the squashes are tender, take them out of the oven. Fill the squash halves with the turkey mixture and top with cheese. Place them back in the oven until the filling is heated through and the cheese is melted, about 5 to 8 minutes. Recipe adapted from www.EatingWell.com

Curry beef stuffed hokkaido squash This incredibly filling squash makes for an excellent weeknight meal. The flavors seem counterintuitive, but they blend together nicely in this dish. Start to finish: 45 minutes Servings: 2 • 1 hokkaido squash • 2 tablespoons olive oil • 1/2 onion, chopped • 2 cloves garlic, minced • 2 cups mushrooms, chopped • 1/2 pound ground beef • 2 teaspoons curry powder • Salt, to taste • Ground black pepper, to taste • 2 cups fresh spinach, chopped Preheat oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit or 190 degrees Celsius. Lightly coat a large baking sheet with cooking spray. Cut the hokkaido squash in half horizontally. Scoop out and discard seeds. Place the squash cut side down on the prepared baking sheet. Bake until tender, between 30 and 45 minutes. Meanwhile, heat two tablespoons of olive oil in a skillet over medium heat and add the onion, garlic, mushrooms, beef, curry powder, salt and pepper. Cook, stirring often, until vegetables are cooked and beef is browned. Add the spinach and cook until it’s just wilted. Once the squash is tender, remove it from the oven. Scoop the filling into the squash halves and serve. Recipe adapted from www.CookItUpPaleo.com

Twice-baked butternut squash This creamy delight will make your tastebuds and your stomach incredibly happy. Every bite feels decadent despite the dish’s health factor — the perfect treat. Start to finish: 80 minutes Servings: 2 • 2 butternut squashes • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter • 1 yellow onion, chopped

• 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt • 8 large sage leaves, finely chopped • 1/2 cup whole-milk ricotta cheese • 1/2 cup plain Greek yogurt • 1/2 cup parmesan cheese, grated • 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper Preheat oven to 425 degrees Fahrenheit or 220 degrees Celsius. Prepare a baking sheet by lining it with parchment paper. Slice the stems off the butternut squashes and cut each squash in half lengthwise. Scoop out and discard the seeds. Place the squash halves cut side down on the lined baking sheet. Roast until the cut side of the squash is tender when pierced with a fork. This should take about 35 to 45 minutes. While the squashes are roasting, melt the butter in a nonstick pan over low heat. Add the onion and salt and sauté until browned at the edges. Stir in the chopped sage and sauté another 30 seconds. Remove from

the heat and set aside. When the squashes are tender, remove them from the oven and turn the cut sides up. Set aside until cool enough to handle. Keep the oven on. Once the squash is cool enough to handle, the insides need to be scooped into a large bowl. With this recipe, we are only refilling two squash halves. On these two, leave a 1/2-inch border so they retain their shape. The other two halves can be completely scooped out and their skins discarded. With a potato masher, mash the roasted squash. Add in the cooked onions and sage, ricotta cheese, Greek yogurt, parmesan cheese and pepper and thoroughly combine. Scoop the mixture into the two remaining squash halves and return to the oven until the tops begin to brown. This should take about 20 minutes. Serve immediately. Recipe from www.CoffeeandQuinoa.com

Well, unfortunately for many of us, that definition just about hits the nail on the head. The beauty of autumn has passed. All of the beautiful leaves have fallen from the trees and have been raked, bagged and tossed away. The air is colder and the days are darker. We leave for work and school when it’s dark and return home to darkness all over again. For some, winter is a festive time of year marked by holiday gatherings and the excitement of snow. For others, the chilly season triggers anxiety and

depression. Here are the top five tips for how to shed a little sunlight on your seasonal sadness. Get outside. Bundle up and spend as much time as you can outside now and through the duration of the winter season. This will help you store any sun exposure you currently have. Additionally, sunlight is the most important weapon against seasonal depression, so use it to your advantage. If you can afford it, buy a light box. As the winter months allow less sun exposure, these nifty little devices can give you a boost when natural sunlight cannot.

Look forward. Be a proactive and forward thinker. Get your holiday shopping done early. Start making plans and preparing for upcoming events, vacations, projects or whatever interests you. Keeping your mind and calendar busy will make all the difference. Know your limits. Although it is extremely important to stay engaged with family, friends and communities, know when to say “no.” Do not be afraid to say “no,” rather than overwhelming yourself with further anxiety. And if you do find yourself in a pickle, do not be afraid to ask for help! Exercise. Whether it is a leisurely bike ride, a brisk walk or squats at your desk, be sure to get the blood moving every single day. Elevate your heart rate. Make time for this and put it on the daily calendar. Exercise is mental therapy. As we inch our way closer to the “thick of it” in terms of the winter season, keep these tips in mind and take control of your mental health.

CUT THE SCREEN TIME,

For preschoolers

PLAY A GAME

by Dr. Krystal White Contributing writer The holiday break looms ahead. On one hand, we’re thankful for the break from work and school, and on the other we quickly tire of the hustle, bustle, and commercialism of the season. Growing up in the ’80s, a deck of cards or a board game could compete with the lure of video games, which were limited to geometric shapes moving jerkily across the screen and oversized joysticks. These days, our highly stimulating and brain addicting screens impede our willingness to abandon the gadgets and interact with each other. Research indicates that most families, 86 percent, consider watching movies and TV their favorite family time activity. Almost half of people polled named playing video games. Out of the top five activities, three involved “screens.” The definition

and practice of family has significantly shifted in the past 20 years. But families that adopt weekly or monthly rituals of game nights during the dark winter season reap numerous rewards. Some parents try to get closer to their children through screens, friending them on Facebook or playing games: but for every hour you spend on these activities is one not spent with your child in the present, physical moment. Those face to face moments are when children bond the best. Consider how limited dating would be if most interactions involved only going to the movies or sending texts; a relationship built on these activities is likely to be shallow. Despite the fact that interacting without screens is not very popular, research shows that families that play games together often have less conflicts. Play also plays a vital role in development. Naomi Younggren, Ph.D., works as the MEDCOM EDIS CSPD

Photo by Olesia Bilkei / Shutterstock.com

coordinator and specializes in early development education. Younggren encourages families to understand how powerful play can be. “Think of play in the broader sense of playful interactions, and not just play with toys,” she said. Younggren encourages parents to look at interactions with parents and peers as the foundations for learning. She lists reading, matching laundry, brushing teeth and going to the park as excellent “play” learning opportunities. Sure, most children are going

to fight at first, and parents may feel they have to beg or bribe their children to play with them. Most children, however, quickly warm to the ritual or secretly relish it; at the very least, they will remember it for years to come as a special season during the year. When you find yourself desperate for something to do that doesn’t involve money or electronics, or to build a ritual that protects your family from the wintertime squabbles, turn to these game night ideas.

reducing conflict during the holidays by Dr. Krystal White Contributing writer It is just as easy to be irritable and mean during the holidays as it is to be generous and sweet. Many families find themselves blissfully swimming in a sea of wrapping paper with gratitude one hour and the next screaming over who is hoarding the game system, causing a mess and not helping out enough.

The holidays intensify our sense of connection to those we love. Yet they often are accompanied with temper tantrums, snarky comments and irritated arguments. Feelings of glad tidings and merriment can easily be overshadowed by recurring resentments or negative assumptions. Often, we react with frustration and anger rather than peace and joy. When the big day is finally here, research shows many families begin

to argue around 10 a.m. A study of over 4,000 households found that arguing was one of the most experienced rituals of our holiday celebrations. The key triggers of conflict were: stressful pressure to cook the perfect holiday meal, arguments over what to watch on TV, and children creating chaos or messes. In addition, during larger family gatherings we are likely to encounter other people that regularly irritate us. Psychologist Leonard Felder reports in his research that threequarters of society has at least one family member who annoys them. University of Louisville psychologist Michael Cunningham identified that “social allergens” run high during the holiday season. Social allergens are habits others have that get down to your last nerve. For example, relatives who always need to “one up you,” kids playing electronics at the dinner table, or a partner who forgot to buy a present as promised. When we consider the stress of the season, it’s no wonder that arguments come naturally. Add high expectations and physical fatigue together with overconsumption of stimulation, food and drinks, and you have a perfect recipe for family drama. Very few of us are at our best during the holidays, and no one wants to be a “Grinch” during this time of year either.

Page 9 Here are the top five things you can do to prevent the Grinch from stealing your holiday joy: • Clearly define three things that are most important to you and why. For example, perhaps setting up the tree is in your top three because the tree lights have a joyful, calming effect on the children and remind you of being a kid again. Write down these top three experiences in advance and share them with your family. • Give yourself permission to say “no.” If a task, event or experience is not part of you or your family members’ “top three things,” consider not doing it at all. The goal is to simplify and avoid overstimulation and exhaustion. This can help you feel more grateful for the amount of quality time together and to take less time for granted. • Come up with clear expectations of who is responsible for certain chores on the big days of celebration. Specify when chores should be completed and reinforce a “team spirit.” For example, perhaps you have a 15-minute “family cleanup time” at 11 a.m. to reduce aggravation over one person doing it all. One idea is to have a Christmas-helper jar: Each family member draws two to three chores for the day with a time frame for completion (e.g., set the

table by 2 p.m., help dad or mom in the kitchen between noon and 1 p.m., separate recyclables from 11 a.m. to noon, clear dishes and load the dishwasher after dinner and before evening electronics time). • Write love notes or words of appreciation throughout the season. Jot down kind words on a sticky note for one other person at least once a day and make them feel special. This habit will train your brain to notice the wonderful things about the season rather than what is annoying. Give up a sense of perfection and worrying over details. No one will remember what side dishes you served or what present they received five years from now. But they will remember how it felt to spend quality time with you. Remind yourself that other people matter more than trying to make the perfect meal or buy the perfect present. Dr. White is a pediatric psychologist at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center and the developmental health consultant for Europe Regional Medical Command. She specializes in healthy habits across the lifespan and evaluating developmental disorders.

celebrated around the world

The month of December is a time for random traditions around the world. Whether your family plays board games or sings karaoke, most households in America share the common tree-food-gift combo in one form or another. Though the Christmas Hollywood portrays might seem like a universally accepted norm, what you see in the movies isn’t what you’re going to find in Australia on Christmas Day. Santa gives his reindeer a rest when he heads down under and uses “six white boomers” — also known as kangaroos — instead. In the hot summer sunshine, Christmas dinner routinely consists of shrimp on the barbecue and fresh seafood. And what do roller skates have to do with Christmas? If you happen to be in Caracas, Venezuela, on Christmas morning, they’re considered the most efficient way to get to mass. Many neighborhoods close their streets to cars until 8 a.m., and loyal worshippers strap on their wheels and ride to church. Before bedtime the night before, children will tie a piece of string to their toe and dangle the long end out the window. The next morning, passing skaters give the string a tug so the children won’t miss the derby. In some parts of former Yugoslavia, families have developed a great way to show brotherly love. As Christmas

November 20, 2020

approaches, parents tie their children up until they promise to be good. The following Sunday, the children break that promise and tie up their mothers until she gives them treats and toys. Finally, it’s Dad’s turn, and he is bound until he relinquishes yet another set of gifts — usually the family Christmas presents (this is the only country that openly admits to tying up their young during the holidays.) It’s best not to mention the figurine of the pooping peasant that you can find hidden somewhere in most Spanish homes during the holidays. Don’t give him away as a gift, but if you come across him in someone’s house, you’re considered lucky. And in America, it’s all about entertainment. In 2012, Fandango broke a box office record with best-ever, single-day ticket sales on Christmas Day. Holiday entertainment is important to Americans. From TBS’s “A Christmas Story” marathon to the holiday prime time classics with Frosty and Rudolph, it’s no surprise that much of American tradition is wrapped up in entertainment. And watch out or you just might find yourself on Dec. 24 parked in front of a television in a last minute gift-wrapping frenzy, reliving the classic tale of George Bailey and Clarence in “It’s A Wonderful Life.” Not a bad way to wind down at the end of crazy holiday season. The joys of St. Nicholas Day in Germany

If you wake up the morning of Dec. 6 to find a full bag of candy or presents waiting for you, it’s likely you received a visit from St. Nicholas. In parts of Germany, “Sankt Nikolaus,” or as we call him in English, St. Nicholas, brings gifts for children on “Nikolaustag,” St. Nicholas Day. Houses are thoroughly cleaned, and children clean their shoes or boots, preferably the biggest pair possible, in preparation for the big man to visit. The evening before St. Nicholas Day, children place letters and carrots or other food near their shiny shoes for the bishop with the flowing beard and staff and his white horse or donkey. These items are sometimes left outside, under a bed or near a window for St. Nicholas to come fill them with goodies. St. Nicholas then goes from house to house with a book where all of the children’s deeds for the year are carefully noted. In theory, if the children have been good, he fills their shoes or a plate with fruits, nuts and candies. If the children have been bad, their shoes are filled with potatoes, coal and twigs. Also on this day, many children recite poems or sing songs for the bishop. Some even make a small gift for him. Other tradi-

tions include lighting candles on the Advent wreath and the Christmas pyramid with a nativity scene; and then some families read stories and sing songs as everyone waits for his arrival. When there is a knock on the door, the jolly saint comes in with his book and sack of goodies. Then, one of the children holds his staff for him as he asks them, “Have you behaved yourself?” If the answer is “yes,” he gives out gifts and goodies for everyone to share. The children share their surprises with St. Nicholas as well. Different areas of Germany have different customs. For example, in Stuttgart children dress up as the jolly saint and go door to door for sweets. In the Moselle region, St. Nicholas is known as the patron saint who protects the people from danger. During the time of the Celts and Romans, ships were towed up the river using manpower and later animals, a dangerous procedure. Therefore shrines and chapels dedicated to the saint were built along the Moselle River in exchange for his protection.

Neunkirchen Zoo

— An experience for the whole family

Courtesy of Neunkirchen Zoo No more than 30 minutes away from the KMC, snow leopards bound over rocks, Asian elephants lazily congregate in groups and giraffes enjoy snacks picked from tall trees. Neunkirchen Zoo offers visitors the full experience, featuring animals from the savannas of Africa, plains of Australia, Europe and beyond.

The zoo features almost 500 species of animals on 16 hectares of land. Among those animals are elephants, leopards, bears, baboons, giraffes, zebras, kangaroos, orangutans, reptiles, meerkats, minks, raccoons, seals and wild dogs, among other endangered and rare domestic animals and other indigenous and exotic animals. At the zoo’s falconry, witness eagles (including the bald

eagle), falcons and owls soar through the air during flight demonstrations, which are held twice a day. Near the zoo’s kiosk, children can visit a large playground and petting zoo that features rabbits, pot-bellied pigs and pygmy goats. When visitors get hungry, they can settle down for a picnic at various spots around the zoo. The falconry tavern provides

refreshments to visitors, and a barbecue area may be rented. Neunkirchen Zoo is open from March to October, 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. and November to February 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The last entrance isallowed until one hour before closing time. Bird flight shows take place at 11 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. daily. How to get to Neunkirchen Take autobahn A8 and exit

at Neunkirchen, Oberstadt or Wellesweiler and follow the signs to “Zoo.” Parking is available. For more information about the zoo, other feeding times and demonstrations, or entrance prices, visit www. zoo-neunkirchen.de. Click “Information in English” at the top of the page.

Continued from front page of Properties section Emergency Kit Necessities First aid kit: These are required in Germany, so make sure you have yours all year round. You can purchase a prepackaged first aid kit at gas stations, ADAC, supermarkets and car supply stores.

Safety triangle: We are including this in the list even though you are supposed to have it all year. Double check to make sure you have this in your trunk (and avoid a ticket next time you get pulled over). Fire extinguisher: Although you may think this is overkill, keep in mind this is an emergency kit. You should hope to never use any of these supplies, yet everyday, people find themselves in situations they thought they wouldn’t. Make sure you purchase a small one that can be kept in your emergency kit.

Reflective vests: The law says you must have one vest for every passenger in the car. You need to have these in the car all year anyway, so pick some up next time you are at the gas station. Flares: Some spare tire tools come

with these so check before your purchase any. Jumper cables: Either include traditional jumper cables that require another car, or a battery operated jumper cable pack handy for remote areas. It would be terrible to be stuck with a dead battery. Ponchos and/or a tarp: In case you’re stuck in the rain or need to walk to the nearest shelter, ponchos or a tarp can protect you from precipitation. Flashlight and extra batteries: Large or small flashlight, make sure you stash extra batteries in your emergency kit.

Water and non-perishable snacks: Blanket: Keep a spare in your car for Keep bottles of water and non- cold weather emergencies. perishable snacks like granola bars, crackers, dried fruit or energy bars Emergency Kit Extras for emergency snacks. Cat litter: Keep this one in your trunk Duct tape: It’s known for being the during the winter months. It’s great solution to everything. Keep a roll of it for creating traction between your tire in your emergency kit. and slick snow or ice. Utility tool: This could be as simple as a pocket knife. Tow rope: If you get stuck, being prepared with a two rope means any vehicle with enough towing power can get you out.

Cell phone charger: It’s best to try and charge your phone before leaving for a trip, but keep a spare phone charger in your car for times when your phone dies. A car battery should be able to get you enough to place a call for help.

If you have spent any time in Germany, you probably have already figured out that driving is serious business. If you compared the cost for someone just to have the privilege to drive in Germany versus somewhere like the U.S.A., you will see right away people who drive in Germany value it for a reason. Before someone can drive on their own, they go through driving school, examinations, drivers license fees, high insurance costs and then they finally get behind the wheel. It can cost upwards of two to three times more to finally drive on your own in Germany as opposed to what it costs in America. It is no wonder, everything related to driving is taken very seriously.

As you drive around Germany, start to notice the little things that make driving a pleasure. Take the painted curbs around some curves for example. That is usually something reserved for professional racecar drivers, but it is commonplace in most dorfs (towns or villages). Notice on country roads that there are perfect markers with reflectors every 25 meters to guide you along the way at night. Although everyone likes to complain about all the construction (and there is lots of it!), the roads are extremely well maintained, especially the beloved Autobahn. As the days get shorter and darker, the cold and wintry weather creeps closer and closer. It is easy to think that you would never get stranded, but seeing someone standing

behind the guard rails (as required by law!) on the side of the road is a fairly normal occurance. Having a winter emergency kit is standard practice in Germany and could save you from a cold and miserable extended period outside if your car breaks down or slides off the road due to snow and ice. We have listed a number of items below that can help you stay safe. Once you’ve gathered all your items, pack them in an easy to grab container like a backpack, plastic container or crate and store it in your trunk. Make sure you organize your emergency kit so you know where each item is when you need it. Remember to replace expired or used items so your kit is ready to go with every trip.

SELECT A

by Katie F. Boltuch Contributing writer The holiday season is upon us, which means it’s time to start thinking about what to get your spouse or loved ones. If you’re like me, you have that one family member who is simply impossible to buy for. Does “I don’t need anything this year, just you” sound familiar? One thing I’ve always been good at, if I may brag a bit, is selecting gifts for friends and family — even for people like my father who seem to have everything. If you haven’t purchased any holiday gifts or are totally at a loss as to what to get for your significant other or loved ones, I’d like to share some personal tips as well as ideas from others on how to select that perfect and meaningful present.

Know your audience.

More often than not, we select a gift for others based on what we would want rather than what they would want. Take a step back and really think about the person. Have they already mentioned something they would want? If not, the next thing to do is to think about that person — what are their interests, hobbies, etc.

What are their interests? What do they enjoy?

Although it seems logical, we don’t always consider the hobbies of our loved ones. Does your spouse like to fix things? Maybe there’s a tool they’ve wanted for a while or they need a new tool chest. Have they mentioned U.S. & GERMAN ATTORNEYS U.S. & GERMAN DIVORCES • SUPPORT ISSUES • EEO WILLS & PROBATE • EMPLOYMENT • PERSONAL INJURY MSPB • CONTRACTOR ISSUES • TAX ADVISORS

something they might be interested in starting, such as fishing or scrapbooking? A subscription to magazines or even a beginner book on the subject could help. For example, when my sister was learning how to knit, I bought her a how-to book as well as a few different kinds of yarn. This gave her an opportunity to learn more about the various styles of knitting, the fabric and how to design new items.

Give them an experience.

The actual gift doesn’t always have to be tangible. “If they have tons of stuff then try to do an experience — a pass to the zoo, a sports game, etc.,” suggested Katie Reynolds from Miesenbach. Do they like music? Maybe their favorite musician or band has a concert or event coming up they might enjoy. Do they like art or history? Buy them tickets to a museum they’ve always wanted to visit but haven’t had a chance. Do they love watching sports? Instead of getting them a jersey or another element of sports paraphernalia, maybe think about a subscription to a magazine or sport network, such as NFL Ticket. You could also consider sending them on a scavenger hunt for their gift. The search for the gift can add to the adventure and make the experience memorable.

Sometimes simple is the best option.

Thanks to websites like Pinterest and Etsy, you are all but sure to find simple answers to your dilemma. Do your in-laws have a favorite vacation destination or location they love to visit?

Think about framing a picture or drawing of some of these places. What about a formal family picture? No need to break the bank on this one either. Ask a friend to help with pictures, upload the picture to a user-friendly website like Shutterfly to edit photos, make canvas prints or create a picture album. It’s a heartfelt gift that never goes out of style.

Do it yourself.

The holidays can get a bit busy so this may not be a great option, but if you have the time and resources, sometimes the most meaningful gifts are the ones we make ourselves. Referring back to Pinterest, there are boards for everything and anything you can think of with regards to DIY gifts. From creating a family scrapbook, mounting pictures in a frame or even creating a cookbook of all your family recipes as a keepsake, help is there for you! Additionally, you can also find some great ideas if you can’t think of any yourself.

Home is where the military sends us.

Sounds familiar, doesn’t it? One of the things my husband and I do is send trinkets from each new location we live. Karlie Gaspard from Birkenfeld agreed, explaining that since she’s been living in Germany, her and her husband have been sending German-themed gifts to family and friends. Of course, if you’ve been in Germany for more than a year you may have already thought of this, but you should also consider gifts from the places you visit while you’re living overseas. If you’re planning a

vacation soon or are about to go on one, think about things that your family or loved ones might enjoy that you can only get in those destinations.

Consider gift cards.

I shudder at the thought of this because I’ve always thought of gift cards as impersonal, but sometimes they can be very thoughtful. “Last year we got my parents a Home Depot gift card because they needed to get work done on the house,” explained Brooke Sands from Bann. Does that special someone really need a break? A gift card or certificate for a massage or spa day would be appropriate. What if you know a store the person likes to shop at but you aren’t quite sure what to get them? This is when a gift card would be appropriate.

Use the internet.

There are a variety of great websites that can help with selecting a gift. One of my go-to sites is www.uncommongoods. com. This site not only has awesome gift suggestions, but you are also likely to find some of the most unique presents you’ve ever seen. Another site is www.gifts. com/finder. When you visit this site, you’ll be prompted to answer a few questions based on the personality of the person you’re shopping for. Do the short quiz and peruse their suggestions. If all else fails, check to see if they’ve made an Amazon Wish List. Simply go to www.amazon. com and search for their name or email under the Wish List section.

Can’t-miss German day trips A-Z: Pforzheim

by MilitaryinGermany.com Pforzheim embodies so much that is good about Germany. With more than 100,000 people, it’s large enough to offer something for every traveler, and small enough that navigating it doesn’t feel overwhelming. There is an excellent blend of culture, commerce and nature — all of which are super accessible under ordinary (i.e. non-COVID) conditions. And, crucially, Pforzheim offers wonderful access to one of Germany’s most famous areas: the Black Forest. A day in Pforzheim: Four ideas 1. Get up and get downtown. “City center” doesn’t have to

equal crowds in Pforzheim. The gorgeous (and sprawling) Stadtgarten, or city park, is only a five-minute walk from the pedestrian zone. This means that if you reach your shopping limit, or need to burn off caffeine, or need to run your children/dogs, then it’s totally possible to do so. 2. Let rivers guide you. There are three rivers that flow through Pforzheim – the Nagold, the Enz and the Würm. Depending on how you’re feeling, you can pick a different river along which to stroll. The Enz will take you right through the commercial area. The Nagold is flanked by the beautiful Stadtgarten. And

green space abounds next to the Würm, which worms its way south toward what seems like neverending forest. 3. Take a culture trip. The city is loaded with history and culture. First, there’s the incredible Gasometer, which provides a rotating set of 360-degree art exhibits. You can find watchmaking and jewelry museums that nod to the city’s craftsman past. An excellent archaeology museum connects its Roman roots to the present. The city also has an art museum. When the doors are open, Pforzheim has much to offer. 4. Go wild. Pforzheim has an excellent animal park that is

home to hundreds of rare species from all over the world. With an emphasis on education, the Pforzheim Wildpark is especially engaging for children. Online tickets are available, but be sure to check the website for COVID-related closure information. The one thing you have to see: The Black Forest Pforzheim is located on the northern edge of Germany’s worldfamous Black Forest. As such, it provides a wonderful jumping-off point for those who wish to dip their toes (or plunge) into the heart of the forest. Great hikes can be had just south of Pforzheim, and a thirty-

minute drive will put you smack dab in the middle of the Black Forest. The winding roads are brilliant (and occasionally thrill-inducing) every month of the year. Getting There By car, Pforzheim is just over 90 minutes southeast of Kaiserslautern, 1 hour and 40 minutes south of Wiesbaden and 40 minutes northwest of Stuttgart. Visit the Deutsche Bahn website for train information. For U.S. government employees, including service members, remember to always follow command regulations, which may be different than host nation policies when it comes to travel.

WINTER

IS COMING by MilitaryinGermany.com No matter what side of the wall you live on, there is no disputing that the glory days of autumn will soon enough be replaced by snow and ice. Now that you live in the country of efficiency, you might as well go native and start planning your winter preparations now. Look4Tyre.com in Kaiserslautern have given us some top tips on getting your car ready for the forthcoming cold spell… Winter tires Your tires are the first thing you need to check — it’s the law! German regulations state that you must have winter tires on your car when winter conditions, including ice, black ice, frost, snow and slush are prevalent. Winter tires are defined as having the markings M + S (mud and snow) on the side of the tire. Some all-season tires carry this marking and are therefore legally valid. The German automobile association ADAC recommends tires bearing the snowflake logo — sometimes also called the “three-mountain” logo — because those tires meet the highest standards for winter driving. The consequences for not having the correct tires can be severe. High-performance “summer” tires have little or no grip in snow. Not only are you risking the safety of you and your passengers, but other road users too. The fine for being caught without the correct tires, is currently €40. In case of an accident this jumps to €80. Additionally, insurance companies have the right to

refuse part of your claim if you were not using the correct tires. Because winter conditions can’t really be predicted or pinned down to a definitive date, most Germans use the rule of thumb O-to-O (Oktober to Ostern/Easter) and therefore will be making appointments to change their tires. Order your tires now and make the appointment with your local tire mounting service to have them changed. Many companies, such as look4tyre.com in Kaiserslautern, specialize in best price tires and fittings for Americans, including the use of VAT forms. A factor that is often overlooked is the importance of maintaining correct pressure in your tires. The main external factor governing tire pressure is temperature change. For every 10-degree change in temperature, a tire can lose approximately one pound per square inch (PSI). So, while your tires were properly inflated all summer, they now will require additional air to maintain the proper pressure as temperatures begin to fall. Getting a tune up Safety should be your first priority: so make sure to get a seasonal tune-up and winterize your car appropriately for the weather conditions. Tuning your car helps to maintain it so that the necessary repairs are done on time and your car is in good condition to avoid any mishaps while you are on road. If your car battery is more than three years old make sure to test it. The average life of a car battery is less than five years. Checking

your battery life will help you avoid the possibility of battery failures in cold winter conditions while you are on the road. Visibility is one very important thing for safe driving. Choose good quality wiper blades that are designed to resist ice or snow build-up. They are not expensive: if necessary go wild and replace them both. Make sure that your engine coolant levels are correct and that your fluid is ready for winter. Check or change the bulbs in your lights. Stocking up your trunk It is a legal requirement to carry a first aid kit, warning triangle and high visibility vest in your car in Germany — this is applicable all year, not just in winter. If you live in a hilly or mountainous area, consider keeping snow chains in your vehicle to assist with treacherous road conditions. If you are a skiing family, you will need these to drive to many ski resorts anyway, especially in Austria. Mucky windows are a curse and severe safety hazard during winter. Consider carrying an extra bottle of windshield fluid in your vehicle. Make sure you have a good spare tire, wheel wrench and proper jack for your vehicle. Keep a couple of blankets and a few items of warm clothing in your car. Don’t forget your warm gloves — essential! By preparing your vehicle for the forthcoming winter now, you are going to be safer and will be in a much better position to enjoy the snowy season in Germany.
