ERPSF helps injured service members soar home Story and photos by Airman 1st Class Milton Hamilton Jr. 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs The En-route Patient Staging Flight bussed injured service members for a routine patient transfer Oct. 26 from Landstuhl Regional Medical Center to Ramstein Air Base. “The ERPSF is part of the patient movement system responsible for transporting patients from point of injury to definitive treatment,” said Tech. Sgt. Maya Baker, 86th Aerospace Medical Squadron ERPSF flight chief. The ERPSF manages missions arriving from Europe, Africa, Central Asia and the United States. It is the focal point in transporting wounded warriors, dependents, NATO forces and civilians between the aircraft and military or civilian medical facilities, An En-route Patient Staging volunteer helps guide a medical bus on the flightline Oct. 26 on Ramstein Air Base. Patients remain on the bus until accommodations on the plane are ideal for travel.

We become better by developing Airman whom become proficient and knowledgeable leaders.” The ERPS works with volunteers to prepare patients for transport to the U.S. twice a week. College professor shares entrepreneurship insight with service members Story and photo by Senior Airman Devin Boyer 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs The Airman and Family Readiness Center hosted a class called Boots to Business Nov. 6 to 7 for service members who plan to open businesses upon separating from the military. Dr. Todd Moss, Syracuse University entrepreneurship professor, instructed the course to give students a broad overview of entrepreneurship so they can make smart decisions in the first steps of their future endeavors. “Ideally, they will come to class having an idea for a business they want to start so that as we go through the material, they can think of how that material applies to their business concept,” Moss said. Staff Sgt. Stephen Ellis, 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs broadcast journalist craftsman, is one of many active-duty military members strongly considering closing out his military career. He said he has been seeking information about multiple options military members have when transitioning to civilian life. He thought his idea to open a guacamole stand could only exist in his imagination. “This class reinvigorated an idea that I had honestly lost the drive for,” Ellis said. “Before I had access to so much info and a really knowledgeable professor, I had no idea where to begin with my idea. He sat with me and seriously worked through it to a point where I’m confident that it can get off the ground.” The two-day seminar covered everything from who your business will sell to, how to legally structure your business, the degree of risk you are willing to take to completing the framework of a business plan for a small business or proprietorship. “This is a very engaged class,” Moss said. “This is not the kind of class where you just sit there and don’t say anything. We have small

group activities where you learn from each other.” Moss familiarized students with the information in each module, but students would absorb the information and brainstorm with each other to fully understand and try out the concepts. “I think my favorite part of the class was listening to other students’ ideas and working on them in my head,” Ellis said. “We had parts of the class where we would give feedback to each other and suggest what we think will make our ideas work better, and I got a lot of good info for my idea and hopefully gave good info for other ideas.” Ellis said he feels the class will have a significant impact on his life. The class runs once a quarter. Military members can sign up for the course on a first-come, first-served basis through the Airman and Family Readiness Center by dialing 480-5100.

Service Dogs: A different kind of medication Story and photos by Airman 1st Class Devin M. Rumbaugh 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs

He said going out in public gave him a feeling of unease. He would leave his home to return back to it in a state of panic. This occurred for nearly five years, until Richard met Abby. She was different; she could read him like a book. If he started panicking, she could calm him in down in a matter of moments. But Abby isn’t a human; Abby is a service dog, and for people with service dogs, the age-old saying, “man’s best friend,” has never been more true. After a deployment in the Middle East, two U.S. Army veterans returned with post-traumatic stress disorder. After attempting to combat the effects of PTSD with traditional medication, the vets found a curious medicinal cure in the form of a furry partner. “I didn’t care about people,” said Richard Rice, U.S. Army veteran with PTSD and partner of service dog Abby. “I was really closed off to the world. I was seeing a lot of doctors, taking a lot of medication, and nothing was helping. “ Rice explained that he was consciously paralyzed after he was injured by an improvised explosive device while on his deployment. He said the doctor, who was also a fellow Soldier, made a mistake but didn’t apologize for his actions. “I lost trust and empathy with people,” Rice said. “I wasn’t good at showing emotions.” Rice’s wife decided to move back to Germany, and he followed her. Shortly after, Rice and his wife decided he needed help and got involved with the service dog organization. Rice said

one of the most important things to understand about service dogs is that they are not robots. “It took me about a year working with Abby before I came to the realization that a service dog can help me,” Rice said. “For a long time, I was very hypervigilant. I was always lost in my head, and I was always panicking and always fearful. But there was this one time I was working with Abby, and I was just completely lost in the moment, and I was so excited. I made eye contact with her, and she sat and looked up at me. I had this release in my head where I felt free, and I became addicted to that release. So I kept coming back for more and more. When I got paired with Abby, I found out that I didn’t need to take medication anymore.”

Rice said that when he doesn’t have a good feeling, he can concentrate and lose himself in Abby’s eyes instead of having to take anti-anxiety medication. He said it completely calms him down, and he can do it as many times as he needs to with no negative side effects. “It’s a positive thing,” Rice said. “It’s positive for myself, the people around me, and it really brings me down. That just one thing she does for me that is really special.” A few years later, word of Rice’s success story made it to a fellow U.S. Army veteran with PTSD. After an exchange of emails, the two gentlemen discovered they had a lot more in common than they initially thought. Chris Holland, a U.S. Army veteran with PTSD, served with Rice at the

same deployed location at the same time, but they never met until then. The two instantly knew how the other felt, and Holland was entered into the program to receive a service dog. Holland worked with the program for months before he was paired with service dog Pepper. “The dog has to grow with you and grow as a team,” Holland said. “He’s a dog like every other dog, and all dogs react differently, like we react differently.” He said his favorite thing about dogs is that they never lie to the person. He explained that Pepper often looks like he’s just being lazy, but in reality, he’s doing his job. He said that if Pepper is relaxed, it means there isn’t anything to worry about. “PTSD dogs are more intellectually sound with their team members,” Holland said. “They help more than what people see. It’s hard to explain what my dog does for me. They give you security; they let you know they’re there. It also builds you as a character to where you want to be. You may never go back to your original self or maybe you don’t want to, but they’ll put you in a better place than you were before.” Holland says he thinks he is headed to a better place and will always be making progress. He believes others will also be able to find a way forward if they find the right tools like he has found in his service dog. Editor’s note: This is a two-part series. In the first part, read about the process for a dog to be selected and trained as a service dog at http:// www.ramstein.af.mil/News/ArticleDisplay/Article/1355601/servicedogs-not-your-average-household-pet.

He said pilots can’t fly a plane if it’s not fixed, and crew chiefs don’t need to fix the plane if the pilots don’t fly it. He said that without maintenance, nothing would get done. “Crew chiefs are always mindful of mission timelines and trying to get stuff done so we can press on with our timeline,” Bitner said. “If there are delays, it’s for good reason, and they’re trying to help us out.” Bitner said it gives him a good feeling that the crew chiefs care as much about the missions and plane status and the pilots even though they work on the ground. “Even after we’re done flying, they’re still working,” Bitner said.

pilot’s input, and cleaning and preparing the aircraft for the next mission. Bitner said that before flights and missions, the crew chiefs will notify the aircrew if a flight issue has occurred before and inform them of the previous issues listed in the aircraft’s documents. As the crew chiefs work in shifts and aircrew cycle between aircraft, both sides rely solely on the paperwork and checklists annotated by the previous shift’s crew chiefs. During flight, if the aircrew encounters issues, they follow checklists to try to resolve the issue. If the issues cannot be resolved midflight, the issue will be resolved upon landing. “We’re generally the first ones to talk to the pilots when they land,” said Staff Sgt. AFRICOM discusses past, present, future by Airman 1st Class Milton Hamilton Jr. 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Hundreds of U.S. service members and other personnel from U.S. Africa Command attended a weeklong annual Regional Synchronization Working Group on Oct. 30. The event was hosted by security leaders from the Department of Defense, the Department of State, the U.S. Agency for International Development and other defense personnel. Lt. Gen. James Vechery, U.S. Africa Command deputy chief to the commander for military operations, addressed the assembly to reflect on goals that were met and provide a vision for the future for AFRICOM to harness the command’s efforts of the past 10 years. “Our goal is to employ the military instrument of power

to support U.S. diplomatic and development efforts,” Vechery said. The RSWG is designed to

port diplomacy, and develop and promote regional stability. Vechery charged the

group with redefining the idea of long-term organizational goals and encouraged leaders to consider solutions to localized problems that begin with local factors for implementation. “By working together, we can develop sound approaches to overcome challenges and realize potential in Africa,” Vechery told the audience. AFRICOM has had a hand in helping develop security institutions in Somalia and supporting the United Nations’ roadmap for elections in Libya. The goals for the U.S. and their partners are achieved through a cooperative relationship, Vechery said. “Continued success will produce capable partners, increase stability in Africa and reduce the demand for American troops,” Vechery said.

ALS instructor reflects on positive leadership by Senior Airman Elizabeth Baker 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs The Air Force expects every Airman to be a leader, and every Airman who steps up to lead has the potential to impact the Air Force for better or worse. One 86th Force Support Squadron Airman Leadership School instructor reflected on an element of leadership that leaves a positive impact: understanding people as individuals. Annually, an average of 595 students complete ALS on Kapaun Air Station. The students hold the rank of senior airman and are preparing to be staff sergeants. The Air Force prepares them to take on bigger responsibilities in the mission to defend their nation. Among other responsibilities, that means leading junior Airmen. “My goal is to help foster an environment where Airmen feel comfortable treating people with respect, while still upholding the Air Force core values and standards,” said Staff Sgt. Ashely Peterson.

“One of the main things we’re doing is basically reminding them how to treat people. The golden rule is to treat people the way you would want to be treated, but the platinum rule is treat them the way they would want to be treated.” As an instructor, Peterson comes in contact with Airmen from across the Air Force and is often reminded of the diversity in its ranks. Yet, challenges accompany the rewards that come from diversity. “There’s so many different personalities in my classes,” Peterson said. “My goal is to make sure that everyone is understanding the information, and I’ve gotten pretty good feedback on it.” To reach her students effectively, Peterson uses the same leadership principles she teaches her students. She said she looks at them as individuals and tries to apply every ALS concept to them specifically. “Everyone is going to use the information differently,” Peterson said. “I can put it into perspective for individuals, whether they’re maintenance,

medical or otherwise, so that they see why it’s important. I can help them value it. I can show them why they have to sweep the streets or dig the ditch or fix the airplane and explain to them how this effects the big Air Force picture.” Another leadership element Peterson displays is adjusting her teaching style to suit a diverse audience. “Some people are introverted; some are extroverted,” Peterson said. “People interpret things differently.” Peterson said that because some students are quiet in the classroom, she learned to read their nonverbal cues to make sure they were keeping up with the information and staying involved in the class. That can be a challenge. “Sometimes understanding quieter people is hard for me because I’m a pretty vibrant person,” Peterson said. “That can turn some people off, so I have to remember to tone myself down a little while not letting those more similar to my personality lose interest. I’ve learned to find a happy medium.”

Peterson feels the challenges she overcomes with Airmen are well worth the effort. “Our Airmen are really important,” Peterson said. “They’re going to be leading the Air Force in the future. They’re the glue that holds so much together.” One of the leaders Peterson trained is Senior Airman Antigany Temple, 435th Contingency Response Group Current Operations unit security manager. “I learned quite a bit in the few weeks I had with Staff Sgt. Peterson in ALS,” Temple said. “I went in thinking there was one approach to leadership, and I left knowing there are multiple ways to approach a situation as a leader. Every individual learns differently and reacts to situations differently, and as a leader, one has to be attuned to those differences. The lessons I learned from Staff Sgt. Peterson in ALS will absolutely be beneficial as I move into a noncommissioned officer role.” Peterson feels that sending newly empowered staff sergeants into the Air Force is a

big responsibility. Sometimes turning Airmen into leaders means giving them a new perspective. Airmen come to ALS from across the Air Force and from a variety of viewpoints. As an example of changing perspectives, Peterson talked about developing students’ concept of discipline. Understanding discipline as a concept is part of understanding how to handle corrective measures, such as nonjudicial punishment. “Students can have a tendency to think of discipline as a negative action rather than a quality people have,” Peterson said. “For example, an athlete has discipline.” Peterson said that not everyone shows some kind of change by the end of the course, but many do. “For the most part, there’s at least a little lightbulb that goes off in them,” Peterson said. “When I see them around base and ask them how’s it going and how they’re doing as supervisors, their responses really make this job worthwhile.”

USAG RP recognizes civilian employees for length of service Story and photo by Erinn Burgess U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz Public Affairs Fifty-five years of government service — That’s what Robert Bigelow was recognized for at the U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz Length of Service Ceremony Nov. 3 at Armstrong’s Club. Garrison leaders presented civilian employees with length-of-service awards for milestones beginning at five years. Bigelow, Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation Community Recreation Division chief, retired from the Air Force in 1989 with almost 29 years of service. Leaving behind his career as a special agent with the Air Force Office of Special Investigations, Bigelow joined the sports and fitness field where he has stayed ever since. Bigelow’s Army career has taken him from Baumholder to Fort Drum, New York, back to Hohenfels, Germany, and finally Kaiserslautern, where he has worked for more than 17 years. Bigelow said he never planned on reaching this 55-year milestone. “It’s one of those things. If you enjoy what you’re doing, time just doesn’t matter,” Bigelow explained. “I’m still a Soldier. I serve the Soldiers. That’s what we do; it’s our mission.” Also among the award recipients was Tawny Jimeno, Kazabra Club manager and five-year government employee. Jimeno’s Army career began at the Landstuhl Java Cafe upon relocating to Germany with her husband, retired Army and current contractor. Since then, she has assumed the roles of operations assistant and assistant manager at Armstrong’s Club, manager of the Rhine Ordnance Barracks Java Cafe and finally her current role at the Kazabra Club. Jimeno recounted her experience as a new employee at the Family and MWR Team Member Orientation several years ago, where former Family and MWR Director

U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz Commander Col. Keith Igyarto presents an award to Robert Bigelow for 55 years of government service at the Length of Service Ceremony Nov. 3 at Armstrong’s Club. The garrison holds a quarterly ceremony to formally acknowledge employees for milestones beginning at five years.

Steve Pelletier inspired her with his success story of a program assistant at the Child Development Center who worked his way up to become director of the entire organization. The story motivated Jimeno to seek out opportunities for upward mobility and different areas of experience with the organization. “I would love to continue working for the Army. When my husband and I go back to the States, this is specifically what I am looking to do — to continue with Family and MWR,” said Jimeno, who hopes to become a Family and MWR division chief one day. The garrison conducts quarterly length-of-service ceremonies in Kaiserslautern and Baumholder communities. Kenneth Armstrong, directorate of human resources and event organizer, explained the ceremonies allow the garrison to formally acknowledge its employees, both civil service and local national. There are a countless number of employees who assist Soldiers with day-to-day missions who may not receive the gratitude they deserve, Armstrong said. “By recognizing the employee’s length of service, it allows the employee the opportunity to feel appreciated and valued amongst their family, friends and peers. It also lets the employee know that their hard work and efforts have not gone unnoticed.” As Garrison Commander Col. Keith Igyarto finished presenting the awards Friday, he took a moment to let the awardees know how much he

appreciated his workforce of Army professionals. “I love being your garrison

New CSM brings commitment, attitude and trust to USAG RP Story and photos by Mary Davis U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz Public Affairs Office Commitment, attitude and trust are three areas Command Sgt. Maj. Brian N. Hauke emphasizes when mentoring Soldiers, and building a great U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz team with those elements is what he aims to do. Hauke recently assumed responsibility as the garrison’s highest enlisted noncommissioned officer in September and is tackling issues and building his garrison team from the bottom up. “Commitment, attitude and trust are essential to building a team. Everyone needs to be committed to their job. You made a commitment when you joined the Army as a Soldier or civilian,” said Hauke, an Orlando, Florida, native. “When you make a commitment, you promise to fulfill an obligation every day to the best of your ability, whether it’s for three years or 30. I’d ask that you fulfill that commitment wherever you find yourself serving, to honor that commitment to the organization, the Army and the nation.” About his second point — attitude — Hauke said that every day is not an easy day in the Army or wherever you work. People must possess a great attitude every day to make it through the tough days, and many military forces and families have lived through those hard days with deployments and daily

New U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz Command Sgt. Maj. Brian N. Hauke salutes garrison commander Col. Keith E. Igyarto Sept. 26 at Hauke’s assumption-of-responsibility ceremony. Hauke brings 27 years of military experience to his new position.

challenges. So, coming to work with a positive attitude makes all the difference, he said. “Lastly, there’s trust. You must have implicit trust for your Soldiers and junior leaders in your organization,” Hauke said. “They have to be able to trust who you are, and that’s done through a number of ways: leading by personal example, leading from the

front, deeds not words and ensuring you are building an organization that trusts at all levels in their leaders and in the subordinates so we are able to accomplish our missions.” Hauke knows firsthand how to work on and build Army teams during his years of experience in several duties, to include UH-60 crew chief, battalion and company aviation life support equipment NCO in charge, Army recruiter, platoon sergeant, first sergeant and command sergeant major. He had strong leaders to learn from. His grandfather served in the Army Air Corps flying B-29s in the Pacific during WWII, and his father was a Navy Seabee who served two tours during the Vietnam War. Even though the military wasn’t pushed on him, Hauke and his family carried on that military tradition. He, his wife, son and daughter-in-law all served as Army aviation operations specialists. The command sergeant major has had several mentors throughout his 27 years in the Army, but one positively influenced him during a pivotal time in his career. “Sergeant 1st Class Tite Mahone was my platoon sergeant here in Germany from 1992 to 1995. He really personified leading by personal example and ‘what right should look like’ as a noncommissioned officer,” Hauke recalled. “As a maintainer of UH-60s, he took me under his wing and showed me what great NCOs in our Army do and how to become a better NCO.”

Although Mahone has been retired for a number of years in Dutton, North Carolina, he and Hauke still keep in touch. “We still talk to this day, and I had him come out in 2009 to promote me to sergeant major at the Sergeant Major Academy, so I absolutely value his opinion, friendship and mentorship,” he said. “I’m the NCO that I am today, because of the NCO he was then.” With all the experience and mentoring he’s received over the years, here is what the garrison can expect from the leader Hauke is today. “I live by the Army Core Values and enforce the Army standards,” said the Florida Gators fan. “I’m very upfront and honest — in some cases, probably brutally honest. But I think we owe our subordinates or Soldiers that, but also praise them for what they are doing well.” With boots on the ground for only a few weeks in Rheinland-Pfalz, the command sergeant major summed up his impression of the garrison in one word: professional. “From our Soldiers to our Department of the Army civilian employees to our local-national employees, I’m thoroughly impressed with our entire force,” he said. “What we do at USAG RP is not a small task, and it takes each and every one of us to make the mission happen. So far, everyone is getting it all done and done well in supporting our garrison families.”

Christmas markets offer holiday shopping, entertainment Germany will ring in the holiday season with Christmas markets starting next week. Outdoor Christmas markets are special events taking place during the pre-Christmas season. They consist of little wooden booths and houses decorated with fir tree garlands and light bulbs. Vendors sell traditional Christmas items such as ornaments, candles, angels, Advent wreaths and nutcrackers. Shoppers

also find ideas for Christmas gifts such as wooden toys, puppets, handmade pottery, handcrafted leather items, glass products, jewelry and more. The history of Christmas markets dates back to the 14th century. After farmers had sold their crop, they paid their workers. After attending worship services during Advent, those workers spent their money right away at little markets set up around the church. Most common items offered were sweets and toys.

There were also craftsmen selling baskets, pottery, spices, clothes and Christmas tree ornaments. Christmas markets also feature daily activities, musical entertainments, merry-gorounds, and appearances by Santa Claus. Generally, most Christmas markets in bigger towns open at 10 or 11 a.m. and close between 7 and 10 p.m. depending on the day of week. The markets in little villages usually don’t start until the early afternoon.

Just like last year, the Abbey Church will be illuminated from 6 to 10 p.m. Saturday during “Otterberg Illuminated.”

Visitors pass several illuminated buildings such as “Blaues Haus,” which houses a restaurant, from 6 to 10 p.m. Saturday.

Visitors of “Otterberg Illuminated” get to see Abbey Church and other important buildings from above the village.

Local restaurants and caterers will serve a variety of food specialties such as pumpkin-, chestnut- and potato soup, homemade burgers and spicy bratwurst. “Visitors will be able to experience a lot of local history and enjoy a special atmosphere in Otterberg’s historical part of town when walking through the narrow streets,” said Ibrom.

The former Lutheran house is one of many framework buildings illuminated in colors Saturday in Otterberg during “Otterberg Illuminated.”

Otterberg presents illuminated buildings by Petra Lessoing 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs For the second time, the city of Otterberg will present “Otterberg illuminated,” from 6 to 10 p.m. Saturday. “We are happy to continue this successful event from last year. This time, even more historical buildings will get illuminated,” said Carola Ibrom from the Otterberg Tourist Information office. “Twenty prominent framework and sandstone houses, parts of the abbey facility and important buildings of today will be part of this illumination, which has been planned in detail.” Guided tours, in German and English, will take visitors through the chapter house from 1173, the old pharmacy from 1608 and the town hall from 1753. Light cones will show them the way. Interested participants of the guided tours should meet at the information desk at the bus stop. The event will begin with an organ concert at 5 p.m. in the Abbey Church. Admission is free, donations are welcome.

BONN, BEETHOVEN’S BIRTHPLACE

Bonn is one of Germany’s oldest cities and the former capital of West Germany. There is a lot to do and plenty to see in this northwestern German city, famously touted as the birthplace of Beethoven. Beethoven Walking Tour Bonn offers a unique opportunity to see Beethoven’s origins, and they’ve preserved just about everything the man touched. For tourists, the city offers a self-guided walking tour, “Beethoven Walk” which features 16 points of interest all related to the musician. Some stops on the tour are more noteworthy than others; nonetheless, the

walk is a good way to get a lay of the city. You can pick up a pamphlet with a map of the walk from the Bonn Information office (Windeckstrasse 1). Some highlights along the route include Beethoven Haus (the house where Beethoven was born and lived) which is now a museum complete with instruments. Follow the journey through the musician’s life with a stop at St. Remigius Parish Church (Pfarrkirche St. Remigius in German) where a 10-year-old Beethoven played the organ during Sunday service (the organ itself is at the Beethoven Haus). The grave of Beethoven’s mother is also featured on the tour and is an interesting and humanizing historical marker. Also popular is the “Beton” concrete sculpture featuring a bust of Beethoven done by artist Klaus Kammerichs in 1986.

Market Square and Altes Rathaus I’m a sucker for a daily market and Bonn’s market in the center of town is a great one with vendors filling the square outside of the Altes Rathaus. In the evening, when the market clears, you can get a better view of the beautiful Altes Rathaus without the crowds.
