Military police officer saves local man’s life For Sgt. Harry Nixon, a recent evening patrol near Miesau Army Depot led to the South Jersey native helping save a German man’s life. Nixon, 38, a military police officer at U.S. Army Garrison RheinlandPfalz, was driving his patrol car behind the depot on a routine security check. It was just before dusk when he passed a man with a bicycle. “I was driving along the backside of Miesau, doing a perimeter check. A lot of local nationals ride their bikes in the forest back there,” Nixon said. “This older gentleman didn’t look

too healthy. I thought, ‘Well, he’s out there trying to ride his bicycle; that’s hard core.’” Still, something didn’t seem right. Nixon turned around, just to check. A few minutes later, as he returned through the area, Nixon saw the bicycle on the side of the road. The man was gone. Nixon got out of his vehicle and began to search.

“I wondered where he went that fast. He had a bright orange wind jacket,” Nixon said, adding that he found the man in a ditch not far from the forest road. “He had attempted to ride and had fallen over. At first I thought he was going into cardiac arrest. ‘Please don’t die on me,’ I was thinking that.” Nixon checked for vital signs and assessed that the man was in shock. He tried the radio in his patrol car but couldn’t reach the provost marshal’s office. He then tried his mobile phone, but had no reception. He got in the car and drove down the road a bit, where reception was better, and called his desk sergeant.

German police and an ambulance arrived on the scene and determined the man was suffering from low blood sugar and was in insulin shock. They took him to the hospital for further care. Taking a stand: Help win fight against sexual assault COMMENTARY

by Gen. Larry O. Spencer Air Force vice chief of staff WASHINGTON — Just as Airmen broke the sound barrier and pioneered new paths to space, Airmen will pioneer new ways to prevent sexual assault in the Air Force. Preventing this crime is not easy; if it were, you, America’s Airmen, would already have eliminated it from our force. As we begin this new fiscal year, I ask for your help in pioneering new ways to prevent sexual assault in the force. To be clear, preventing sexual assault focuses on the individual that commits the crime and how to intervene before a crime takes place. Whether the campaign is called “Inherent Resolve,” “Airmen Powered by Innovation” or “Every Airman Counts,” your ideas are

at the forefront of solving every challenge the Air Force faces, and eliminating sexual assault is no different. In the past several years, we have made great improvements in our sexual assault response programs. We added more sexual assault response coordinators and funded full-time victim advocates at each installation. We stood up a special victims’ capability comprising specially trained investigators, prosecutors and legal support personnel to appropriately prosecute these sex crimes. We also significantly increased our victim advocacy capability with special victim counselors that are available to all sexual assault victims and whose sole purpose is to represent the victim in any legal proceedings or assist in any other legal and policy matters a victim may need.

We have also spent a great deal of time training and educating every Airman about sexual assault prevention and response. This education starts from the day an Airman walks into a recruiting office and continues throughout their career. However, our job is far from done. While we’ve made progress in victim advocacy and appropriately holding offenders accountable, there is still significant work to do in preventing sexual assault before it happens. Together, we all need to get better at recognizing the characteristics of the perpetrator and the subtle situations in which we can stop harassment, assault and violence before it happens. This is where I need your help. From Jan. 12 to 16, we are conducting a sexual assault prevention summit at Andrews Air Force

Base, Maryland, and will bring in Airmen from across the force to participate. While only some of you will be given the opportunity to attend in person, I want all of your ideas on how we can better prevent sexual assault. Visit the Air Force’s “Every Airman Counts” blog at http:// afsapr.dodlive.mil/ and submit your ideas and any other thoughts you have about creating an Air Force free from sexual assault. It’s going to take all of us working together and exploring innovative ideas to come up with a practical toolkit that we can all use to effectively prevent this horrible crime from taking place in the Air Force. I appreciate you taking the time to make the difference and to bring us to the next level in the fight against sexual assault.

Airmen learn cultural diversity from NATO Story and photos by Senior Airman Timothy Moore 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs The KMC Top 3 Council presented the annual Cross-Cultural Awareness Professional Development Seminar Nov. 5 in the U.S. Air Forces in Europe and Air Forces Africa Kisling NCO Academy auditorium. During the four-hour seminar, NATO leaders gave their perspective on cross-cultural awareness and engagement to KMC Airmen of all tiers and career fields. “The purpose of this seminar is to showcase to our KMC military personnel what NATO is, how we fit into that picture and to give them the knowledge they need to operate in this environment,” said Senior Master Sgt. Travis Robbins, USAFE-AFAFRICA senior enlisted international engagement manager.

Chief Warrant Officer Johannes Linnenbank, NATO School NCO Professional Department director, speaks about cultural diversity Nov. 5 at the U.S. Air Forces in Europe and Air Forces Africa Kisling NCO Academy auditorium. Linnenbank and other NATO leaders spoke during the fourth annual Cross-Cultural Awareness Professional Development Seminar.

The seminar included briefs on cultural diversity, ethics, NATO’s mission and structure, and what it means to be an Alliance member. Chief Warrant Officer Johannes Linnenbank, NATO School NCO Professional

helped save a local German man’s life,” said Lt. Col. George B. Brown III, the garrison’s director of emergency services. In the past, Army and Air Force conducted joint patrols. Since September, Soldiers have carried out security patrols supporting Army law enforcement efforts on Army installations. This also meant a shift toward a stronger com-

munity policing presence, Brown said. Nixon, who is married to a German woman and watches local German news, said he was just glad he was there to help and didn’t have to later hear about some man dying in the forest. “You have to be out there and be proactive as MPs,” Nixon said. “The more we are out there, driving around and doings things, the more we can help.”

Department director, gave the briefs on cultural diversity and ethics. “We all think we are open (minded), but in a lot of situations we are not as open as we think,” Linnenbank said. “I hope with these lectures we open minds.” Linnenbank spoke of being culturally sensitive to differences on thoughts such as timeliness, food and alcohol, male and female roles, and sexuality. Robbins, who travels around talking to different NCO corps, said the seminar is a great way to show Airmen the importance of what the U.S. is doing overseas as a member of NATO. “I think it’s important for people serving, especially in this theater, to understand where they fit into that picture of NATO,” Robbins said. “We are not just the U.S. Air

Force occupying a base over here and acting as a transient center. We are here to integrate with these partners and work with them every day to make them better and make us better at the same time.” Master Aircrew Duncan Hide, Headquarters Allied Air Command senior NCO, echoed the sentiment during his brief on the NATO mission. “The more we know about each other and the more we understand each other, the better we work together and the more interoperable we are,” Hide said. Robbins said he hopes the Airmen that attended the seminar will take what they learned back to their work centers and discuss it. “Hopefully, it helps people have a better understanding of why we are here, what NATO is and what we are moving toward,” he said.

Though the seminar focused on cultural diversity in an international setting, it was also noted the same considerations could be applied to a local setting. “We want to get people to think about, ‘That could happen to me in an international setting, but that could also happen to me in my own headquarters,’” Linnenbank said. “How will you react? How can you react differently or better?” Regardless of the location or organizations involved, the hope is the seminar helps increase the interoperability of all working together. “We want to share and build in those relationships and partnerships,” Robbins said. “As we move forward in whatever endeavor NATO, USAFE, the Army or whoever is charged with, we can operate together and understand each other better.”

Short-, long-term parking available on Ramstein by Senior Airman Jonathan Stefanko 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Tis the season to see family and friends, but before traveling to the United States for some home cooked meals, know where to park your vehicles on base, otherwise they may be towed. Short-term parking is available outside the 721st Aerial Port Squadron at Bldg. 3333.

Short-term parking is limited to four hours, and a blue parking disc must be displayed on the vehicle’s front windshield. The parking disc can be purchased at the base exchange or in most German stores for a minimal fee. Failure to display a parking disc or parking longer than the allotted time will result in the vehicle being ticketed. Any vehicles parked for longer than 24 hours or parked in bus parking will immediately be ticketed and towed.

When four hours is not enough, long-term parking is available for free. Parking is located in the parking garage on the corner of Fairchild and Lincoln avenues and is on the fourth floor or higher. Security forces regularly patrols the parking garage, and when cars are discovered parked illegally or abandoned they are subject to removal and impounded at the owner’s expense. There may also be possible punitive action under the Uniformed

Code of Military Justice. Long-term parking is restricted to the fourth through sixth floor of the parking garage only during winter months due to snow and ice accumulation on the top two uncovered floors. These are the only locations to leave your vehicles without risking a fine or towing and are available to all with access to Ramstein Air Base. For more information, visit www. ramstein.af.mil/library/factsheets/ factsheet.asp?id=7969.

AF releases criteria for new service medal WASHINGTON — Air Force officials released nomination criteria for the new Nuclear Deterrence Operations Service Medal, following Secretary of the Air Force Deborah Lee James’ May 27 authorization. The medal will be awarded to individuals for their direct support of nuclear deterrence operations. “This service medal provides a clearly visible way to recognize the dedication and professionalism of our Airmen who are the guardians of our nation’s nuclear deterrence. Because of our success, oftentimes nuclear deterrence operations can be overlooked as a critical function,” said Col. Zannis Pappas, missile operations career field manager. “The medal acknowledges the special challenges faced by those Airmen charged with supporting the nuclear enterprise and will be a point of pride by all who wear it.” Service members may be awarded the nuclear deterrence medal if they were assigned, deployed or mobilized to a wing, center or below in support of the nuclear enterprise for 120 consecutive days or

179 nonconsecutive days. Subsequent awards will only be authorized when a permanent change of station to a qualifying unit has occurred. “The Air Force continues to demonstrate its support to the most vital part of the nuclear enterprise – the Airmen,” said Maj. Gen. Garrett Harencak, Air Force assistant chief of staff for strategic deterrence and nuclear integration. “This medal exists as a tangible way to acknowledge the importance of this mission and the dedication and pride that the men and women in the nuclear community show to their country. Having secretary of the Air Force-level interest testifies to the importance of this decoration and impact on nuclear operations.” The medal will be worn with an “N” device for those who dispatched to a missile complex for 179 nonconsecutive days in direct support of intercontinental ballistic missile operations or are in direct support of nuclear laden aircraft. Only one “N” device will be worn, regardless of the number of qualifying assignments. An oak leaf cluster will be worn for subsequent awards, which will only be

authorized when a PCS has occurred. Eligibility for the medal is retroactive to Dec. 27, 1991. Nominations for currently serving Airmen will be processed through their respective chain of command. A member’s current group commander is considered the awarding authority for the medal. Retired or separated Airmen can submit a request submitted to the Air Force Personnel Center recognition section for validation. The award can be presented posthumously as well, so family members of deceased Airmen can also contact AFPC for information. The medal is currently under development with a projected date of availability through the Defense Supply System of March 2015. For more information and full eligibility criteria, visit myPers. Guard, Reserve, retired and separated Airmen and their family members may contact the Air Reserve Personnel Center at 800-525-0102 for assistance. The secret of once-a-year PT tests Story and photo by Airman Larissa Greatwood 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs

The 786th Force Support Squadron offers an hour-long PT Boot Camp class at 11:30 a.m. Mondays through Fridays at the Ramstein Northside Fitness Center. The class is designed for those who need a better score on their physical fitness test or to keep up their fitness levels. The class is open to both military members and civilians. Though the name may sound intimidating, the class is at the individual’s pace and consists of many exercises completed in a rotation. “Some people hear ‘PT Boot Camp’ and think they can’t do it, because it sounds hard,” said Loriann Tierney, PT Boot Camp attendee. “I encourage people to come and even just watch. Some people working out at the gym see it and realize they would be able to do it because it’s self-paced, but it’s also great because, if there’s an exercise someone can’t do because they have a bad knee, for example, they can modify it in a way that they can do it.” Tierney, also a former PT Boot Camp instructor, encourages people to attend the class to observe or try it out. “A lot of the people who give it one shot continue to show up to the class, so I say to anyone looking to better their

Capt. Spanky visits RAF Lakenheath Hello, Ramstein! I just got back from my latest adventure, which was something a little different from my usual European excursions. Last week my human and I took a trip to one of our U.S. Air Forces in Europe brother bases — Royal Air Force Lakenheath, England. England has been a longtime “must see” on my to-do list, so when we decided to go, we couldn’t pass up the opportunity to take a look at how our fellow Airmen live. RAF Lakenheath made the perfect destination for us to get out and travel Great Britain, but also gave us a fantastic place to relax and mingle with our fellow Airmen. While we were there, I was able to reunite with one of my old friends, British Billy. With his help, we took a tour of the base, traveled the local area, took the tube to London, and really immersed ourselves in the culture. We even took part in the Bonfire Night celebration, which Billy explained to us was commemo-

rating the survival of King James I after the foiling of a plot to blow up the Houses of Parliament in 1605. It was great having a tour guide, and fortunately, Billy has been providing excellent information about British culture for everyone to use for years. I would recommend a visit to RAF Lakenheath, and before you go, take a look at Billy’s information online here: www.lakenheath.af.mil/news/ britishbillyarchive2/index.asp.

DIRECTIONS: • Heat oven to 180 degrees Celsius/350 degrees Fahrenheit. • Using the kneading attachment of your mixer, on low speed, mix the butter, sugar and Vanillin Zucker (vanilla sugar) together until creamy. Add the egg. Slowly add the sifted

flour, using the low speed on your mixer. • Coat your hands with flour and roll the dough into small balls. • Using the end of a wooden spoon dipped in flour, make an indentation in the center of each ball. Be careful not to poke the wooden spoon all the way through the ball. • Fill each indentation with jelly. A whipping cream press works great for this. • Slightly beat the second egg. Brush the beaten egg around the top of the cookie, being careful not to get any egg on the jelly. The egg wash will give the cookies a shiny or glazed look. • Lay each cookie on a cookie sheet lined with baking paper. Bake for about 12 to 15 minutes or until cookies are light brown.

Diabetes Awareness Month

T

hey say knowledge is power. No statement holds more truth than when speaking about diabetes mellitus, typically referred to as diabetes. In the month of November, the 86th Medical Group would like to increase your awareness about diabetes. According to the 2014 National Diabetes Statistics Report (released in June), diabetes remains the seventh leading cause of death in the United States. It was reported that 29.1 million people had diabetes in 2012. This is an alarming rise from 25.8 million reported in 2010. New cases include people from varied races, ethnicities and ages. People 20 years old and older diagnosed with prediabetes totaled 86 million. There are several misconceptions about diabetes. Below are common misunderstandings about the disease. Diabetes is not caused by eating too much sugar. TRUE — Diabetes mellitus is a disease characterized by high blood sugar levels resulting from the body’s inability to use blood glucose for energy. In Type 1 diabetes, the pancreas no longer makes insulin. In Type 2 diabetes, either the pancreas does not make enough insulin or the body is unable to use insulin correctly. Type 1 diabetes is caused by genetics and unknown factors that trigger its onset. Type 2 diabetes is caused by genetics and lifestyle factors. Risk factors for Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes that cannot be changed include age, race or ethnicity, gender and family history (genetics). Risk factors that can be altered to decrease the risk of developing Type 2 diabetes are being overweight, inactivity, high blood pressure and high cholesterol. To determine your risk level, take the American Diabetes Risk Factor Test at www.diabetes.org/ are-you-at-risk/diabetes-risktest/. Diabetes is not a serious disease. FALSE — Diabetes is a serious disease that can be managed with positive outcomes for one’s lifestyle. For some individuals with pre-diabetes, early and effective treatment can actually return blood glucose levels to the normal range. If diagnosed with diabetes and managed properly, individuals can prevent or delay diabetes complications. Complications of diabetes can affect your eyes, teeth and gums, heart, kidneys, sex organs, blood vessels, nerves or feet. The diabetes health care team will assist patients with self-management of a diabetes regime. This team includes, but is not limited to, a primary care manager, a disease manager, diabetic educator, an endocrinologist and psychologist. Individuals with diabetes should meet with their primary care manager at least once a year. You can have “a touch of the sugars” or “a little” diabetes.

Diabetes remains the seventh leading cause of death in the United States. There are many misconceptions about diabetes, including that it’s caused by eating too much sugar, that it’s not a serious disease and that people who get diabetes must follow a strict diet.

FALSE — People are diagnosed as pre-diabetic or diabetic Type 1. Your primary care manager may order blood tests to make a diagnosis for prediabetes or diabetes. A common test is the A1c test that measures the average blood glucose over the past three months. According to the American Diabetes Association, diabetes is diagnosed at an A1c of greater than or equal to 6.5 percent, and prediabetes is diagnosed at an A1c of 5.7 to 6.4 percent. This test can be accomplished at your local medical facility. Your primary care manager will discuss the results with you and plan your medical care as needed. People who get diabetes need to follow a special diet. FALSE — People with diabetes benefit from the same healthy diet that is good for everyone else. A diet that is low fat, moderate in salt and sugar, contains lean proteins, non-starchy vegetables, whole grains, healthy fats and fruit is a good combination for healthy eating. In addition to healthy eating, one should maintain a regular physical activity program. It can help lower blood glucose, blood pressure and cholesterol and the risk for heart disease and stroke. Additionally, exercise burns calories to manage weight, strengthens muscles and bones, increases energy for daily activities, and reduces stress. Symptoms of diabetes can go unnoticed. TRUE — Some individuals with pre-diabetes or Type 2 diabetes may not notice mild symptoms that could be indicators of diabetes. Common symptoms of diabetes include:

• Feeling thirsty and hungry • Frequent urination • Extreme fatigue • Blurry vision • Slow healing from cuts or bruises • Weight loss even though meals have increased • Tingling, pain or numbness in the hands or feet If you notice any of these symptoms, contact your primary care manager for further evaluation. Small changes in your lifestyle can decrease your risk of developing diabetes. TRUE — There are several ways to lower the risk of developing diabetes. Your diabetes medical professionals at the 86th MDG can assist you with the following: • Losing weight • Incorporating a healthy eating plan into your lifestyle • Managing high blood pressure • Maintaining an exercise plan to stay physically active • Managing high blood glucose with a goal set by your primary care manager • Smoking cessation Now that you have increased your knowledge, use this power and fight diabetes. Make plans to attend the Diabetes Discussion from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday at the Ramstein Clinic. This event is open to anyone enrolled at the Ramstein Clinic. For more information or to sign up for the event, contact the disease managers at 479-2689 or 06371-46-2689, or your primary care manager through MiCare or the appointment line at 4792273 or 06371-46-CARE. Outdoor Rec creates fun for everyone Story and photo by Airman 1st Class Michael Stuart 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs With the everyday workload of military life, destressing is an important part of a service member’s career. The 86th Force Support Squadron Outdoor Recreation, located inside the Kaiserslautern Military Community Center on Ramstein, makes it easy for military members to enjoy their off-duty time in a fun, adventurous way. Outdoor recreation provides members of the KMC with the opportunity to travel around Europe, revel in fitness-related activities and rent equipment for their own personal endeavors. “We strive to promote physical fitness and healthy lifestyles by providing the highest quality gear, facilities and customer-driven programs,” said Sarah Mueller, 86th FSS Outdoor Recreation director. Outdoor recreation consists of three facilities: the retail store (along with a climbing wall) located in the KMCC, the Aquatics Center located on Ramstein, and the Rod and Gun Club located on Vogelweh. “I think it’s good for service members to keep fit and active,” said Cory Mathisen, 86th FSS Outdoor Recreation assistant. “Something like this on any military installation is positive and helps with the

Some classes offered are rock-climbing, paddle-boarding, canoeing and kayaking, among others. “We have a variety of classes, and we really try to spark someone’s interest and encourage them to try

something new,” Mueller said. Outdoor Rec also offers a ski and bike shop for customers who are trying to be active any season, as well as equipment suited for year-round activities. For more information on ODR, call 480-5705 or 06371-47-5705. Outdoor Rec is open between 10 a.m. and 8 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays and 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. Sundays.

Air Force flies high, beats Army by John Van Winkle U.S. Air Force Academy Public Affairs U.S. AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. — A risky play action pass on fourth-and-goal sealed a 23-6 Air Force victory over Army at the U.S. Military Academy Nov.1, securing the commander in chief’s trophy and a possible bowl bid. The Air Force’s game-winning drive started early in the fourth quarter, with the Falcons ahead 16-6. The Falcon defense held the Black Knights’ explosive offense in check to that point, but Air Force coaches were not comfortable sitting on a 10-point lead, so the team came out gunning for another score. “We knew it was a rivalry game and you’re always going to get Army’s best shot,” said Falcons head coach Troy Calhoun. “Hats off to them. They played hard. We knew we were going to get their best game, so we prepared to get their best game, and we handled it well.” The Air Force’s drive began at its own 21 yard line, featuring a heavy dose of rushing and a crucial pass to wide receiver Jalen Robinette to keep the sticks moving. The Army bent but didn’t break, and the drive boiled down to a first-and-goal situation for the Air Force at the Army’s 3-yard line. The Falcons rushed into the teeth of the Black Knights’ defense three times, gaining only 1 yard. Faced with a fourth-and-two and 7:05 still on the clock, the Falcons’ offensive brain trust decided to go for it. Looking at 16-6 on the scoreboard, an Air Force field goal would leave the Army still two touchdowns away from a win, but

an Air Force touchdown would leave the Army needing three scores to win. Falcons quarterback Kale Pearson took the snap, faked a handoff and rolled right on the play action pass. He found tight end Garrett Griffin running in the flat and hit him for an easy touchdown. “It was really good, old fashioned football with two play action passes in there,” Calhoun said. “The other play action pass was to Robinette, who made a sensational dynamite catch, and then Pearson was able to finish it on fourth down to Griffin.” With Will Conant’s extra point, the Air Force pushed ahead, 23-6. The Army came back to sustain a long drive, until Falcons cornerback Justin Decoud forced a fumble. Strong safety Weston Steelhammer recovered at the Air Force’s 43-yard line with 4:45 left on the clock, and the Falcons stuck to grind out yards and time. With a 16-yard run by tailback Jacobi Owens and a 19-yard dash to daylight by fullback Shayne Davern, the Falcons punched ahead to the Army’s 17-yard line and threatened to score again. But, having forced the Army to burn through its timeouts and killing the clock, there was no need to go for another score. The Falcons knelt twice to respectfully end the hard-fought game. The Air Force’s win over the Army combines with a previous Air Force win over the Navy to give the team a clean sweep to earn the commander in chief’s trophy. “It’s huge for the seniors, how hard they worked in the offseason and how hard the team worked in the offseason,” Calhoun said. “Looking at this time last

Air Force Falcons wide receiver Garrett Brown tries to elude the Army’s defense on the field Nov. 1 at the Falcons vs. Black Knights game at the U.S. Military Academy in New York. The Air Force won, 23-6, securing the trophy for the 19th time. Brown, an academy junior, ran two catches for 54 yards and had four rushes for a total of nine yards.

year we were kind of down in the dumps, and we told ourselves in the offseason that we’re going to work hard all offseason and it’s going to pay off. It’s pretty awesome to see that we put the formula in place and it’s starting to pay off.” The trophy was created by service academy alumni in 1972, going to the winning academy with the best record in round-robin competition. The Air Force has won the trophy 19 times — the most of any service academy. “It means a lot,” said Air Force linebacker Jordan Pierce. “This is one of our goals every season is to win this, and for the first time in a couple years, we finally did it. But, we’re not focused on that right now. We’re going to enjoy this for the next 24 hours, but we have a game next week. So we’ll brush it out of our memories real quick and we can wait until April to celebrate again.” The win over the Army increases the Air Force’s record to 6-2, and the Falcons are now one of five bowl eligi-

How this bowl picture shakes out will be determined over the rest of the season and the Falcons could face a rough road ahead with its final four games. The Air Force’s next opponents were all-conference foes Nov. 8 at an away game at UNLV (2-7). The Falcons return home Saturday to face Nevada (6-3), hit the road to battle San Diego State (4-4) and close out at home against perennial rival Colorado State University (8-1). Kickoff against UNLV is at 2 p.m. MT. Falcon football fans can watch the action on the Mountain West Network or follow the play-by-play action on KVOR 740 AM and online at www.goairforcefalcons.com.

PETS

All ads and pics on class-world.com

There have been reports of pets being sold from breeding facilities that are not managed at the highest professional standards. Please choose your pet carefully. Make sure you check the credentials of the people selling the pet, and get proper paperwork showing shots and/ or other proof of healthy condition. For further advice, consult your Veterinarian.

Professional Services are offered by registered businesses as well as private people. To ensure a satisfactory service experience, please always ask for credentials and deny payments up front. For cleaning services, arrange for payments after a final walk-through and inspection of the clean house.
