Ramstein loadmasters raise the bar

Throughout 2021 Aviation Detachment Rotation, several 37th Airlift Squadron loadmasters took on a notable increase in responsibility during day-to-day operations at the 33rd Air Base near Powidz, Poland, Oct. 30. By no accident, these select loadmasters became even more capable in their ability to lead and teach a cohesive aircrew since graduating from the 29th Weapon Squadron Advanced Instructor course at Nellis Air Force Base, Nevada. The training provides a more cerebral approach to being a loadmaster with planning and contingency response being key points of emphasis. “The loadmasters’ understanding of tactics, techniques and procedures and how they apply that to a combat environment to best deliver the appropriate effect is an incredibly important benefit gained from the AIC training,” said Maj. David Mackintosh, 86th Operations Support Squadron chief of weapons and tactics. “It’s important they have similar on-par training with their pilot counterparts.” See LOADMASTERS, Page 2

Rated Preparatory Program now accepting applications for FY21 spring class Secretary of the Air Force Public Affairs Active duty Department of the Air Force officers and enlisted Airmen and Space Professionals interested in becoming a rated officer have until Dec. 31, to apply for the Spring 2021 Rated Preparatory Program. This will be the third year that the Air Force has partnered with the Civil Air Patrol for this

training. The 2021 class will take place at the Denton Enterprise Airport in Denton, Texas. “The Rated Preparatory Program provides Department of the Air Force officers and for the first time enlisted applicants, who are interested in cross-training to a rated career field the opportunity to gain and strengthen their basic aviation skills,” said Col. Scott

Linck, Aircrew Task Force deputy director. “This program will allow them to enhance their knowledge through developmental modules and acquire valuable flight time in order to increase their competitiveness as candidates for future undergraduate flying training boards.” Applicants selected for the RPP will first complete an online self-paced ground

course followed by a one-week in-resident course to introduce them to aviation fundamentals. Program participants will garner approximately seven to nine flight hours, ground instruction and additional training time in a flight simulator. Officers who complete the program are required to apply to the next available Undergraduate Flying Training selection board.

Enlisted participants who complete the program are required to apply to at least one of three Air Force commissioning sources: U.S. Air Force Academy, Reserve Officer Training Corps or Officer Training School. Airmen who can meet the following requirements are encouraged to apply: See RPP, Page 3

COMMENTARY: I’m with you by Senior Master Sgt. Virginia Torpey 86th Aircraft Maintenance Squadron Many of you have heard or experienced that the higher you are in the chain of command the lonelier it becomes. First Sergeants turn to other First Sergeants, Chiefs to other Chiefs, Commanders to other Commanders, the unit triad to each other. One thing I have learned as a First Sergeant is that everyone eventually needs someone. We all have breaking points. As much as we’d like to think we’re superheroes, we aren’t. There will never be enough hours in the day and there will always be more work. On top of the usual stressors, this year has impacted everyone in ways they probably never imagined. We’re in the middle of a global pandemic. We’ve learned LOADMASTERS from Page 1 The three-month program effectively raises the bar for loadmasters across the board. The knowledge gained during training allows them to form a more cohesive, less rigid unit within an aircrew. Staff Sgt. Dominique Benward, 37th Airlift Squadron loadmaster and recent AIC graduate, is already applying that training in the field. Benward became an expert in the employment of C-130J Super Hercules aircraft and also in the process of coordinating with ground parties and other force assets. In forward training deployments like ADR, Benward began briefing aircrews on on-call airdrops as a result of his graduation from the training program. “Within these briefings I define for the aircrews what an on-call airdrop is and how we’ll be preparing for it in the subsequent training mission that follows the briefing,” Benward said. “On top of that, within the AIC training I learned how to be an effective crewmember and

are drawn to. Some of you may even be one of those people. I’ve known my fair share of them, one of whom committed suicide when no one even knew anything was wrong. He was always asking everyone else how they were but no one ever asked him and wanted the real response. No one knew the pain and depression he was dealing with because they only saw the smile he always had on his face and the happiness he brought others. Losing him sent shockwaves through our organization and put things into perspective for me. We have to take the time to genuinely ask someone how they’re doing and be ready and willing to listen to whatever the response may be. Not just the folks you know are dealing with things either, but everyone, especially those who seem to be the strongest. You never know

what someone is dealing with in their lives. Have you ever genuinely asked your Commander how they are doing? What about your Chief or your Shirt? The Chaplain? These key positions (and many others) are expected to take care of everyone else, but are they taking care of themselves? Are you? Take the time to go home early, put the phone down, and spend time with family and friends. Take up that hobby you have been neglecting because you’re “too busy.” Find someone to talk to before things get to the breaking point. Make the time in your day to ask someone how they are doing and actually listen to what they say. Take care of yourself because if you are falling apart, how are you supposed to help anyone else? And let people know you are ‘with’ them. Because without Airmen, there is no Air Force.

the difference between social distancing and physical distancing. Face coverings have become a part of every outfit. We’ve seen unprecedented changes, conversations, lockdowns, and protests. We’ve seen suicides by chaplains and other leaders. We’ve seen our youngest Airmen inspire and advocate not only among their peers but up the chain. The problems people had on Jan. 1 likely aren’t the same problems they have today. In the environment in which we find ourselves this year, it is even more crucial to take care of each other and find a solid work-life balance. One of the ways I find balance is by playing rugby. On the rugby pitch, one of the most common phrases you’ll hear is “with you!” That is how a player lets their teammate know they can keep running, including into contact, because they

have support right behind them. That support can help you push through contact or take/defend the ball when you get tackled. In today’s “more with less” military we are going into contact every day. Someone or something is always trying to tackle us, and we sometimes forget to let people know we are with them. We get so bogged down with our own jobs that taking care of each other, and ourselves, is often on the backburner. It can be easy to ask people how they are without actually listening for the response. So why is really listening for a response important? Most of the time when you ask someone (or yourself) how they are doing you already know they’re fine, right? Not right. We’ve all known those people who are constantly happy, regardless of what is going on in their lives. The people that others

not just a loadmaster. For me personally, the training was an incredibly valuable opportunity and I’m grateful I was given that chance.” Mackintosh agrees with the value of this training, stating how necessary it is to keep the ball moving forward. “This AIC training is absolutely the future for loadmasters,” Mackintosh said. “With loadmasters increasingly becoming a more comprehensive member of the crew, familiarizing them with a high strategic and tactical understanding of the mission is a win for everybody involved.” Benward said he looks forward to applying what he learned and seeing how others apply their knowledge from the course, as well. “I’m super excited to see where it’s going to go the next few years so I can see how smart these guys and girls graduating from the course are going to be in this field.” One thing is clear: the return on investment from this training for loadmasters, like Benward, couldn’t be better for the U.S. Air Force and its mission.

Air Force updates travel screening process for EFMP families

by Traci Howells The Air Force’s Personnel Center The Department of the Air Force has implemented an automated travel screening process to simplify required medical screening before a permanent change of station. Members selected for an assignment will automatically receive an email with the link to MyVector to begin the screening process. Medical clearance is required for all Exceptional RPP from Page 1 1. Any active duty officer who meets UFT board requirements. 2. Any active duty enlisted Airman or Space Professional who meets UFT board requirements and qualifies for a commission through one of the three commissioning sources (Reference PSDM 20-96 for further information). 3. Be a U.S. Citizen. 4. Be of high moral character and personal qualifications (members currently having open law violations or criminal investigations, previously convicted by court-martial or having received an Article 15 are ineligible to apply). 5. Have the unit commander’s approval and endorsement.

Family Member Program families preparing to PCS, and for those members selected for an overseas assignment. “A PCS can be challenging enough without the additional steps required for medical screening,” said Tamera Nelson, transformation leader for Headquarters Air Force Manpower and Personnel Services. “This is especially the case with our EFMP families, who may have had to get clearance from multiple doctors in the past.”

The new initial travel screening questionnaire is electronic and automated, and will give members immediate feedback for clearance or additional necessary actions. One of the most important actions is to ensure the phone number on file is updated in the event a follow up is required. EFMP members and those traveling overseas with dependents will be directed to Q-base, the DAF Special Needs Screening website, and instructed to provide information and upload the

required documentation for medical and educational clearance. Nelson explained this automation streamlines a lengthy process into a faster initial screening and, in most cases, may result in an easier clearance. The process allows the member to answer each question and be properly directed to the next applicable item, only answering questions that apply to their situation. Another feature of the new process was updated based on feedback from members that

found it very difficult to leave EFMP if there was a change in medical or administrative status for a family member. The system now allows for the application for disenrollment from the program as part of the travel screening process. “The intent of the new system is to move things faster, and it also gives us better tracking,” Nelson said. “Everything we are doing in EFMP is about trying to make it easier for families; that’s our focus.”

6. Have a current passing Physical Fitness Test score. 7. Have a Pilot Candidate Selection Method score prior to the RPP class start date. 8. Have less than five hours of total civilian flight time (applicants with greater than five hours of civilian flight time may apply, but will only be considered on a space available basis). 9. Officers: Obtain a U.S. Air Force Initial Flying Class I, 1A, Ground Based Controller or III flight physical prior to entry into the RPP. 10. Enlisted: Obtain an FAA Class III physical prior to entry into the RPP (Reference PSDM 20-96; consult a local Aviation Medical Examiner). 11. Complete an online self-

paced ground course that will be provided prior to the class start date. 12. Be prepared to retake the Air Force Officer Qualifying Test and Test of Basic Aviation Skills at the first available opportunity upon completion of RPP, preferably within two to four weeks.

“When comparing applicant scores pre- and post-RPP, results show, on average, a 20% improvement in student AFOQT scores and a 35-point increase in PCSM scores,” said Maj. Sean Stumpf, Aircrew Task Force talent management branch chief. “Approximately 90% of officers who went through the program

in 2019 and applied for UFT were selected. We are hoping for the same results from the most recent class that went through the program this summer.”

The Air Force’s newest officers march during their graduation parade and ceremony at the Cramton Bowl football field Sept. 27, 2019, Montgomery, Alabama. Officer Training School’s class 19-07, also known as “Godzilla Class,” spent eight weeks taking part in a series of field training and classroom leadership exercises preparing them to become Air Force officers. Call for Innovation Rodeo ideas nears Dec. 1 deadline by Shannon Carabajal Air Force Installation and Mission Support Center Public Affairs With less than a month to go in their annual call-for-topics campaign, the Air Force Installation and Mission Support Center is still looking for innovative ideas with potential to change the Air Force. “If you have an idea that will help the Air Force deliver installation and mission support capabilities, improve our installations, or support our families in a better, faster or smarter way, we want to hear from you,” said Col. Lance Clark, director of AFIMSC Expeditionary Support and Innovation Directorate. The campaign, open through Dec. 1, gives military and civilian members of mission support groups around the world a chance to compete for part of at least $1 million in funding and resources to pursue their ideas. Airmen with the top ideas will learn from leading innovators and pitch their ideas to a panel of Air Force leaders during the AFIMSC Innovation Rodeo competition on Feb. 5. The theme of this year’s Innovation Rodeo is Base of the

Future, a broad topic with endless mission support-centric possibilities. Through the competition, Airmen can help shape how installations can look and function in the future. AFIMSC can be a powerful ally for anyone with an idea that can improve installation and mission support operations, said Dustin Dickens, an innovation program analyst with the center. “Since standing up an innovation office two years ago, we’ve landed more than $65 million in Air Force and venture capital funding for I&MS initiatives,” he said. “We’ve been very successful at connecting brilliant Airmen with Air Force and industry partners to bring their ideas to life.” The competition calls for Airmen to submit their ideas though the online Ideascale platform at https://usaf.ideascalegov.com/a/ campaign-home/181.

Past Innovation Rodeo winners include: • Mobile apps to make life easier for Airmen and their families, including one to centralize and streamline the subletting

Maj. Jacque Vasta presents her idea for a child care app to senior leaders during the 2020 Air Force Installation and Mission Support Center Innovation Rodeo, Feb. 7, in San Antonio. of short-term slots at military child development centers; one for base announcements and community events; and one to share feedback about customer experiences. • An idea to replace the current manual mapping of underground cabling and wiring with the use of augmented reality. • A project to leverage Geospatial Information Systems and aerial

imagery for facility roof inspections. • A proposal to use autonomous robotic lawn mowers to cut the grass in and around airfields at night to reduce aircraft birdstrike hazards. AFIMSC’s innovation team partnered with rapid acquisition leaders to convert Airmen’s innovative ideas into reality at a record pace.

As such, winning projects are now in various stages of development, including an idea from the inaugural event in 2019 – an app now called the Wing Feedback App – that is currently in beta testing at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, Texas. This week in Operation Warp Speed Below is a compilation of initiatives, actions and accomplishments across Operation Warp Speed’s primary efforts in the past week. To learn more about OWS, visit the Department of Health and Human Services website and Department of Defense website.

Vaccine development: Video interviews and an article discussing participation in vaccine clinical trials with Operation Warp Speed vaccine development lead Dr. Matt Hepburn are available for download, editing, broadcast and publication. Dr. Hepburn discusses the clinical trials process and the need for volunteers to participate in the trials in locations throughout the country. Therapeutics development: Humanigen entered into a cooperative research and development agreement with the government, supporting the company’s development of lenzilumab, focused on preventing and treating an immune hyper-response called cytokine storm. The agreement provides access to a full-scale, integrated team of manufacturing and regulatory subject matter experts and statistical support in anticipation of applying for

emergency use authorization as a potential treatment for COVID-19. Manufacturing, distribution and administration: Centers for Disease Control and Prevention released the executive summaries from the vaccine plans submitted by each jurisdiction, a crucial step in the overall U.S. government effort to develop, distribute, and administer COVID-19 vaccines. The summaries provide an overview of each location’s thought process and planning for different COVID-19 vaccine availability scenarios. Additionally, CDC and OWS are prioritizing efforts with jurisdictions to increase provider recruitment and enrollment, which is the cornerstone of all three phases of vaccine rollout. Another IT focus area is ensuring jurisdictions have the endto-end technical means and proper data formats to transmit accurate vaccine uptake

information once vaccine administrations begin. Operation Warp Speed highlights the military experts who are partnering with regional coordinators at CDC headquarters in Atlanta and their efforts to provide decision support for vaccine prioritization and delivery plans across the country. From high-tech tools to contingency planning, the team is working to ease the burden of public health officials. Transparency: In a continued display of transparency, additional contracts were added to the Operation Warp Speed electronic reading room. Key engagements/outreach: Operation Warp Speed chief science advisor Dr. Moncef Slaoui and chief operating officer Gen. Gus perna visited CVS headquarters in Woonsocket, Rhode Island, this week to discuss and solidify the

company’s important role in vaccine administration. The COVID-19 prevention network launched eight educational videos for clinical research sites that will also air on its youtube and social media channels. The videos range from short public service announcements addressing the need for clinical trials participants, to indepth panel discussions about health inequities in Black communities. These videos will be available in English, Spanish and Portuguese, with and without subtitles. ICYMI: Secretary Azar wrote that Operation Warp Speed is a unique made-inAmerica story: with OWS’s historic public-private partnerships between the government, military, and private sector, American industry is delivering again. Senior leader quotes: “The country’s existing

public health infrastructure is well tested — we see evidence every fall when Americans receive the flu vaccine in large numbers. But these are not normal times. Leveraging our military planning and logistics capability and combining that with proven methods will allow existing systems to scale quickly to get COVID-19 vaccines to the american people.” — Gen. Gus Perna, Operation Warp Speed chief operating officer Operation Warp Speed is a partnership among components of the Department of Health and Human Services and the Department of Defense, engaging with private firms and other federal agencies, and coordinating among existing HHS-wide efforts to accelerate the development, manufacturing and distribution of COVID-19 vaccines, therapeutics and diagnostics.

INTRODUCING: Taxi, Yellow Cab Ram stein Airport Shuttle, Patient Transportation

N

eed to get from A to B? No matter where you are or where you need to go, the team at Yellow Cab Ramstein is ready to be your chauffeur. Offering taxi rides, shuttle service and patient transportation, this is surely a company you should add to your contacts. Yellow Cab Ramstein was founded in 2014. They first started off with two vehicles, now they have six. The team of eight drivers, including the owner himself, know the local area well and always find the fastest way through traffic to drive you where you need to go without wasting valuable time and money. Your satisfaction is most important to them and you can count on them to be reliable, punctual, friendly and flexible. They take pride in their mission to pick you up and bring you to your destination in a timely and safe manner. Can you believe, they are available 24 / 7, 365 days a year!? Who can advertise that

Ramstein for door-to-door service. Then they handle the billing directly with your insurance provider, even with TriCare.

kind of service nowadays?? Not only is the availability great, but the cleanliness, too. Even before COVID-19 they went the extra mile to clean and sanitize their vehicles. Now they’ve also added a divider to separate the driver and front passenger seats from the back seat for extra protection.

from there to bring you back home. This can be a one-off booking or even on a regular basis. Your typical airport shuttle is another option. With large vehicles that can sit up to eight persons, you have room for your whole family and luggage. Transporting a dog crate is also not a problem.

When you hear taxi, you tend to think local. The Yellow Cab Ramstein however, not only does trips within the region, but also all over Europe. So when we all are able to plan trips again, keep them in mind to take you all over Germany or even to Brussels, Paris, Metz and more, and / or pick you up

What most people don’t know is that they are licensed to offer patient transportation. So if you’re injured and can’t drive to work or if your child is injured (has crutches or a wheelchair) and can’t take the bus to school, you can get a referral from your doctor that allows you to book the Yellow Cab

The Yellow Cab Ramstein makes it easy for you to make a booking. Either give them a call, go to their Facebook page and send them a message or click “book now”. You can also text them in WhatsApp or even directly on Google. All they ask is that you give them a 15-minute notice during the day and if you require pickup at night, factor in reserving your time slot during the day, because they have less cars running during the night. The drivers all have base access which makes it very convenient for the passengers that live on base to still take advantage of their door-todoor service. Here’s a fun fact about the cab industry in Germany: The prices are regulated by the German government, so all of the companies you see offering taxi services will charge you the

same price. It is currently at approx. € 1.80 per kilometer, no matter the type of vehicle needed or the amount of passengers in the car. However, it is possible to receive a discounted rate if you needed to use their service for a certain drop-off or pick-up on a regular basis, starting at a minimum of 50 km. Since we’re not in New York, you can’t just stand on the side of the road, whistle and have a cab immediately pull up, but you most certainly will have someone answer the phone right away when you call the Yellow Cab Ramstein. They promise to be at your location within 15 minutes. I think that’s well worth the wait knowing the prime customer service you will be getting. If it just so happens that they don’t pick up, that means their lines are busy, but someone will call you back immediately, so make sure your number is not hidden. Airlifter of the Week: The definition of ‘multitasker’

U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Kelli Alvarez Cordoba, 86th Materiel Maintenance Squadron unit deployment manager, holds two coins at Ramstein Air Base, Oct. 29. As a UDM for the MMS, Alvarez oversees the deployment of more cargo than Airmen.

U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Kelli Alvarez Cordoba, 86th Materiel Maintenance Squadron unit deployment manager, speaks with Brig. Gen. Josh Olson, 86th Airlift Wing commander, and 86th AW Command Chief Master Sgt. Hope Skibitsky, at Ramstein Air Base, Oct. 29. Alvarez was chosen as Airlifter of the Week for her pivotal role as a UDM in pushing several missions, standardizing asset reporting procedures and supporting 17 other fields in generating three exercises, five temporary duties and an international quality assurance evaluation during worldwide COVID-19 responses.

Story and photos by Airman 1st Class Jennifer Gonzales 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Staff Sgt. Kelli Alvarez Cordoba, 86th Materiel Maintenance Squadron unit deployment manager, was recognized as Airlifter of the Week for her incredible work as her unit’s ‘Swiss army knife’ at Ramstein Air Base, Oct. 30. It takes hard work and dedication from all squadrons to keep the mission going at the Gateway to the World. Airmen may be tasked

with duties outside their scope of work, especially when it comes to deployments. Alvarez was recognized as Airlifter of the Week for her pivotal role as a unit deployment manager in pushing several missions, standardizing critical asset reporting procedures and supporting 17 other fields in generating three exercises, five temporary duties and an international quality assurance evaluation during worldwide COVID-19 responses. “When it comes to being a

UDM, a lot of others see it as you deploying people,” Alvarez said. “Granted, that is a regular UDM, but this is [the] MMS. We don’t deploy a lot of people because we deploy assets and cargo.” This isn’t just a ‘once in a while’ job. Most of Alvarez’s time is spent gathering data for unit type codes from the subject matter experts (SMEs) of various squadrons. “We spend a lot of hours in a secure room, where we’re consistently trying to give the most up-to-date (information) through our program,” Alvarez explained. “We work along with our SMEs for civil engineering, fuels, vehicle management and now aerospace ground equipment, which takes a lot of time considering there are [thousands of assets] we have to update regularly.”

U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Kelli Alvarez Cordoba, 86th Materiel Maintenance Squadron unit deployment manager, provides a close up of two coins she received at Ramstein Air Base, Oct. 29. Alvarez was recognized as Airlifter of the Week for multiple contributions to several missions, including an equipment exodus.

With their squadron being as small as it is, one can see the difficulties of being able to keep up with mission demands. Despite the heavy workload, Alvarez wants to make it clear that teamwork is what drives their mission to success. “Our squadron is only 40 people, so it’s not just them sitting here doing one job,” Alvarez said. “They also have to go on temporary duty to where they have their assets. They’re trying to juggle life, TDYs, being here to do their job, and still

trying to give us updates on top of that. Endurance is just a really big factor in our job. It’s a squadron that has all the squadron functions, just with 40 people.” Along with that, Alvarez and her team maintain everyone’s Individual Medical Readiness status, the emergency management program and their squadron’s training schedules. Ramstein’s mission can be a lot to handle, so Alvarez reminds everyone to look after their mental health. She keeps her own resilience strong by keeping in touch with close friends, staying fit and being aware of her mental health. “I genuinely just want everybody to be aware of their mental health,” Alvarez said. “The mission’s the mission, it’ll always be here. [However,] your life, your family and your time? You get one chance and it’s gone.” If you or someone you know is experiencing depression, anxiety or any mental health issue, please reach out. App for military resources available to service members, families center and website that provides free comprehensive information, support and resources on every aspect of military life.

by David Vergun Department of Defense News The “My Military OneSource” mobile app is now available for service members and their families for free by downloading it on Google Play or Apple’s App Store. The purpose of Military OneSource is to put as many resources as possible in one place, so people have an easier time finding what they need, said Erika Slaton, the associate director for Military Community Support Programs. The app makes it more convenient when users are away from their computers and are only carrying a smartphone. Each year, Military OneSource connects hundreds of thousands of service members and their families to resources to help improve their quality of life, Slaton said.

About Military Community and Family Policy Military Community and Family Policy is directly responsible for establishing quality-of-life policies and programs that help our guardians of country, their families and survivors be well and missionready. Military OneSource is the gateway to programs and services that support the everyday needs of the 5.2 million service members and immediate family members of the military community. These DOD services can be accessed 24/7/365 around the world.

Users can trust the My Military OneSource app, website and call center because it guarantees their confidentiality with a few mandatory exceptions, Slaton said. Military OneSource must disclose illegal activities and situations to prevent harm to self or others. Those eligible for Military OneSource are Defense Department service members, including National Guard and Reserve, irrespective of activation

The user-friendly design of the new My Military OneSource app is based on comprehensive data analysis and user input, including in-depth interviews with more than 300 service members, spouses and service providers; analysis of user satisfaction data input from military leadership and program managers; and a thorough review of best practices, Slaton said. “To ensure the My Military OneSource mobile app continues to meet the needs of the military community, we will evaluate user feedback to help inform ongoing updates and enhancements, as well as new features,” said Slaton, who added that feedback

by Col (Dr.) Ryan Mihata 86th Medical Group Commander Germany continues to experience about 10-15 thousand COVID-19 case counts per day. In Kaiserslautern, we had approximately 100 active cases a month ago, and we increased to more than 600 active cases this week. The Robert Koch Institute, which is similar to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, uses 50 new cases per 100 thousand population (in a 7 day period) as the “risk” mark. Kaiserslautern

is currently 135 per 100 thousand (city) and 173 per 100 thousand (county). You can find the RKI websites with current statistics at our COVID website here: https:// www.ramstein.af.mil/COVID-19/. As we are entering into influenza season, it is important to remember that the protective measures to prevent COVID will also prevent influenza. So far we have not had any significant numbers of influenza in our area. Influenza season in Europe tends to be one or two months behind the United States. As many symptoms of

COVID are similar to symptoms of flu, it is likely that your medical team will need to test you for both should you get sick. Both COVID and the flu can range from no symptoms to severe symptoms. If you want to learn more, visit the CDC website: https://www.cdc.gov/ flu/symptoms/flu-vs-covid19.htm On a different topic, some TRICARE Overseas Program

(TOP) Select enrollees, specifically “Group A retirees” (those sponsors starting their enlistment or appointment before January 1, 2018), need to set up their monthly enrollment fees in order to keep TRICARE Select coverage. This does not apply to any other TRICARE plan (TRICARE Prime, For Life, or other premium based plan). If this does apply to your

LRMC COVID-19 testing exceeds 50K Story courtesy of Landstuhl Regional Medical Center Landstuhl Regional Medical Center recently exceeded 50,000 COVID-19 tests in its effort to slow the spread of the virus overseas. Starting in February, LRMC’s Infectious Diseases Laboratory began testing for COVID-19 utilizing the Real-Time Reverse Transcriptase Diagnostic Panel, becoming the only U.S. military medical treatment facility in Europe with diagnostic testing capabilities. As the threat of COVID-19 increased, so has demand for testing, resulting in the addition of rapid multiplex polymerase chain reaction, and a high-throughput testing system which provides rapid, high-volume testing of COVID-19 test samples.

Various efforts initiated across Europe, Africa and the Middle East, have led to increased testing for surveillance, screening and symptomatic testing since the start of the pandemic. “Although this is a large number of samples, it doesn’t fully capture the extent of the broader and more comprehensive laboratory team approach,” said U.S. Army Lt. Col. David Peterson, chief of LRMC’s Department of Pathology. “Over the last several months the LRMC lab directors and their outlying clinic laboratories have set up COVID-19 testing capabilities at more than 10 military health clinic sites bringing valuable testing closer to the patients and operational units.” U.S. Army Spc. Donald Lockhart, laboratory technician, Department of Pathology and Laboratory Services, Landstuhl Regional Medical Center, prepares a COVID-19 sample for testing at LRMC, Nov. 3. Personnel, ranging from PhDlevel scientists to supply technicians, support the laboratory, allowing the section to continue daily mission requirements of providing non-COVID-19 analysis while continuing to support the hospital’s ongoing and increasing COVID-19 mission. Across Europe, the U.S. Army has performed PCR testing on more than 150,000 COVID-19 samples in collaboration with various Army Health Clinics, to include clinics across Germany, Belgium and Italy, and Public Health Command Europe.

According to Peterson, the testing not only helps with tracking and slowing the spread of COVID19, but in conjunction with other testing, helps identify other causes of respiratory illness, such as influenza and other viruses. “Some of our testing helps symptomatic individuals differentiate between COVID-19 infection and non-COVID infections, which can aid in treatment and disposition decisions,” said Peterson. “In the event of an illness affecting schools and the work environment, testing is essential to identify close contacts and

others that may have been exposed so measures can be taken to protect those that were not exposed.” Additionally, Peterson mentions surveillance testing capabilities in austere environments can help identify asymptomatic individuals before the virus spreads within a unit, increasing combat readiness for Joint Warfighters across the combatant commands. The testing also allows U.S. service members to continue multinational training exercises overseas while ensuring host-nation communities remain safe from the virus. “In total, we have received samples from over 40 different locations within Europe, Africa and the Middle East. These are from a combination of Army, Air Force, Navy and Marine Corps sites, as well as forward-deployed units and some U.S. Department of State affiliated locations,” said Peterson. “The aim of much of our testing is to identify symptomatic and asymptomatic infection as early as possible so that action can be taken to reduce, hopefully prevent additional spread and ultimately protect individuals and communities and conserve military readiness.”

Baumholder CYS sports program hits bullseye amid pandemic by Rebecca Schwab USAG Rheinland-Pfalz Public Affairs Functioning well in this COVID19 environment is no small task, but Baumholder Child and Youth Services Sports Program staff and coaches have proven they can go above and beyond to keep their sports programs running safely. The Baumholder CYS Sports Program recently received the prestigious designation of a Better Sports for Kids Quality Program Provider from the National Alliance for Youth Sports. According to the NAYS website, the designation is “a seal of commitment to quality and safety based on nationally accepted standards.” Ingrid Osewalt, deputy director of USAG Rheinland-Pfalz Family and Morale, Welfare, and Recreation, said the designation doesn’t come easily. The tough application process required detailed explanations of how NAYS quality standards are being implemented. “The standards include written policies and procedures, volunteer screening, coach training, parent education, and accountability,” Osewalt said. Baumholder CYS Youth Sports & Fitness Director Marcel Fisher said the designation means a great deal to their staff and coaches, especially considering the COVID19 pandemic. “It validates our hard work and motivates us to keep pushing for excellence for our Baumholder Military Community,” he said. “During these challenging times, it is of utmost importance to provide a place where kids can continue to be kids and stay active in the safest and healthiest way possible, and our program achieves that.” The Baumholder CYS Sports Program normally provides team sports, individual sports, and fitness and health programs for children

washing before entering a practice space, and social distancing. Even with the restrictions, what they’ve been able to achieve has also impressed parents, like Marina Rodriguez, whose children started taking archery and have now expressed interest in trying other sports as well. “Because CYS worked hard to find activities that would be approved when many other activities were cancelled, my children were able to have some sense of normalcy during the summer and fall,” Rodriguez said. “It gave them something to look forward to, and as parents, it was rewarding to see [them] stay active and healthy, while still following the safety guidelines.” Volunteer cross country coach Arlene Coronel, whose daughters participate in many of the sports

ages 3-15, but Fisher said things changed dramatically this past year. “Traditional sports seasons were not an option due to the limitations and safety concerns for our players,” he said. Core sports like soccer, basketball and baseball were all affected, as well as rotational offers like tackle football, volleyball, and cheerleading. “The biggest change is that no games/scrimmages or normal practices are allowed at this time,” Fisher said. “This is what most of our youth look forward to, but with our communication and guidance, they are able to understand why it has to be this way until we return back to normal.” Baumholder CYS Youth Sports & Fitness Assistant Director Whitney Clemmons said adapting to a COVID19 environment meant creating new

individual sports activities in lieu of team sports. “We implemented a COVID-19 modified archery, golf, foot golf, disc golf, cross country, and soccer skill camp into our summer and fall season, under the guidance and approval of our Army Public Health Nursing Division and garrison leadership,” Clemmons said. One of those programs had an enormous response. “There has been an unimaginable demand for archery in our community, which was offered for the first time this past summer,” she said. “Our team members are now working on ways to expand and improve our archery program to offer more and exciting sessions.” All participants must adhere to strict COVID-19 mitigation measures, to include cleaning and disinfecting sports equipment, hand

programs, assisted with the modified programs this summer. “Without these programs, my kids wouldn't be able to be as active,” she said. “We do miss having games and longer seasons for them to play. The clinics have been great for them to keep their motivation, but I do know they highly miss having more of it.” Clemmons said that, with the upticks in corona cases in Germany, they are patiently waiting to see what will happen and what their leadership will decide for the future. But for now, she said they are focusing on the successes, from overwhelming positive feedback to increased communication with their patrons during the course of the pandemic. “We are very appreciative and proud of our community. Our current fall season has become one of our most successful sports seasons in the past few years,” she said. “Depending on how things continue to develop under COVID19, Baumholder Youth Sports & Fitness is always willing to accept any challenges and can ensure their patrons that we will continue to support our overall mission no matter what.”

Environmental exclusive: Radiators Story and graphic by Tech. Sgt. Jennifer Smith 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Autumn is here, which means service members, civilians and families stationed in the Kaiserslautern Military Community need to know how to operate a radiator. Radiators are standard throughout Germany and can be found in homes with central hot water heating systems. While it is common to open windows to recycle the air to prevent mold, ventilating with the heat on can be wasteful. Last year, Ramstein Air Base’s daily heating costs were approximately $45,000 during the colder months. To ensure proper energy efficiency, radiators need to be deaerated periodically. Deaerating is the process of removing the air from a radiator. “If the radiators are warm from end to end and there is no rumbling noise, there is typically no air in the radiator, said Maria Meyers, 86th Civil Engineer Squadron mechanical engineer. “If the end opposite of the radiator valve is cold and there is a rumbling or bubbling noise inside

the radiator, the air is in the system and the radiator should get deaerated. One can use a square socket key to open the deaerator valve, while holding a cup underneath. After the air is released, the heating system water will get dispensed. After deaerating, close the valve. The heating system water is typically dirty; therefore, make sure you have a cup handy to catch the dirty water. If a room is unoccupied, place the radiator on the universal star setting, which is 45 degrees Fahrenheit. This allows warm water to get in, so it will not freeze. “It is not good to run the heat while the windows are open, as it will waste energy during the heating season, Meyers said. “Opening the windows for ventilation for about five to ten minutes, two to four times per day, is a must in German homes without a central ventilation system. During the heating season, you should close the radiator valve before opening the windows for ventilation. After ventilation, you should open the radiator valve again. For more information, call the 86th CES at 480-3723.

WWII vet still breaking the mold at 102 by Katie Lange Department of Defense News As a Black girl growing up in the early 1920’s, Vivian Corbett never thought the world was her oyster. “As a little girl in Oklahoma, I never imagined I would be able to do anything of any real significance,” she said. Now, a century later, former Army 1st Lt. Vivian “Millie” Bailey will tell you there’s very little that hasn’t been significant. She commanded a segregated all-female unit during World War II and has been helping service members ever since. At 102, she continues to live life to the fullest. In fact, she just went skydiving for the first time last month near her home in Columbia, Maryland! “When the senior [President] George Bush did it, that made me realize that people who were not young could do it,” Bailey said during a phone interview. “It was just something I always thought I would like to do.” That can-do attitude has taken her far in life. Bailey joined the Women’s Army Auxiliary Corps (later dubbed the Women’s Army Corps) in the early days of World War II. She was commissioned as a first lieutenant and served as the commander of an all-female detachment before being selected to attend the Adjutant General School Officers’ Administration Course. As one of only two Black women in the class, she graduated with outstanding marks and went on to serve for the first time with an unsegregated unit. Bailey was discharged after the war ended, but in a way, she

never stopped serving. During the Vietnam War, she and a group of friends put together care packages for deployed service members. She did it again for troops during Desert Storm. Since 2004, she’s been packing boxes, soliciting funds and calling elected officials for contributions as part of an effort that has sent hundreds of care packages overseas. The service members who receive the boxes are pretty vocal about what they want to see in them, she said. “We used to send quite a few personal hygiene things, but it became quite clear that the main things that the soldiers wanted [were] snacks,” Bailey said. A lot has changed since her time in service, so she said she wouldn’t know what advice to give current female service members. But she did offer a tip that might be the key to her longevity: Don’t sweat the small stuff. “I religiously try not to worry about anything I can’t do anything

about,” she said. “If I can’t do anything about it, why fret over it?” Bailey has earned several accolades in her lifetime, including from President Donald J. Trump and other lawmakers. Recently, Maryland’s Howard County dedicated a park to her. She joined officials for the unveiling of the new Vivian C. Millie Bailey Neighborhood Square. “It made me feel very, very honored,” she said. “I’ve received a number of honors, but I never expected to have anything quite that prestigious.” Bailey said there are very few things left that she’d like to do, but there is one item left on her bucket list. “Meet Michelle Obama,” she said, referring to the former First Lady. “President Obama received me at the White House in 2015, but Mrs. Obama was not there.” Bailey said she’s received two letters from Mrs. Obama over the years, so hopefully, that dream can be checked off the list, too!

It’s tummy time, baby! Walking is over-rated. Sitting up is for suckers. Tummy time is all the rage and if you get your baby on this bandwagon, everything else will fall in to place! It is sooooo important to a baby’s development. By simply placing your baby on his/ her tummy to play, you are setting the stage for natural motor skill development. Reaching, rolling, creeping, crawling, everything that is critical begins with the tummy! Tummy time — do it! So, why is tummy time “all that?” • Building the muscles of the trunk, shoulders, arms and the arches in the hands • Preventing flattening of the head (plagiocephaly) • Building a good balance of flexor and extensor muscles • Supporting the development of rotation patterns that your baby needs for eventual sitting to play, crawling and walking Do this: • Place your baby on a firm surface, like a carpeted floor or by draping a blanket on the floor

• Make sure your baby is alert and awake for tummy time • Even when you bring your newborn home from the hospital, you can do a version of tummy time by having him lie on your chest during waking times • During floor time/ tummy time play, you can also include some time on your baby’s side to encourage using both hands together at midline. Put a “boppy” pillow behind her or lean her back against the soft edge of the sofa base. • Put a mirror and/or some fun toys on the floor for your baby to look at or reach for. You can also hold a toy at eye level, so that your baby can practice reaching and grabbing. • Incorporate Tummy Time into natural routines by placing your baby on her tummy on your lap after a bath, when applying lotion or when burping your baby • Have a sibling sit in front of your baby to encourage and entertain her while she’s on her tummy

Photo by George Rudy / Shutterstock.com

Don’t do this: • Exersaucers, standers and other baby positional equipment is not great. In fact, use of this gear can result in your baby developing a muscle imbalance or abnormal motor patterns. Minimize time when your baby is “in” something and maximize allowing him to use his own body. Give him the freedom

to explore on the floor. Like Braveheart — Freedom!!! • No tummy time at bedtime or nap time. The American Academy of Pediatrics still recommends “Back to Sleep.” Place your baby in a supine position (wholly on the back) for sleep time until he reaches one year of age. • Don’t force it. If your baby is

distressed or seems to have “hit her limit” with tummy time, give her a break and try again later. Build up slowly — maybe 3-5 minutes, 2-3 times per day for young babies, building up to 3-5 times a day totaling 45-60 minutes for older babies. Now, start building up that baby of yours! Tummy time is where it’s at!

ent. It is a place where you can get back to basics. Travelers can stroll past gorgeous buildings, wander sprawling vineyards, and emerge from a forested park to see the power of a mighty river. It is also a place of stone and bones. Why Oppenheim? Oppenheim offers more than enough to satisfy day trippers. Aside from its beautiful location, centuries-old city ramparts, fascinating wine museum (open April through October) and a handful of outstanding churches, here are four more reasons to visit. Water. Oppenheim does the Rhine River right. Watersports and a riverside beach are popular during the summer. In all other seasons, visitors can wind through

the Oppenheimer Waldchen, a small forest on the water’s edge, and feel as if they have the river all to themselves. Bones. Oppenheim has an ossuary, in which bones and skulls are stacked like firewood behind St. Katharine’s Church. Though this may seem macabre, the idea is to reinforce the joy that comes with being mortal. Carpe diem, indeed. Wandering. Old Town Oppenheim is lovely and accessible no matter the season or weather. Plus, it offers multiple opportunities to wander into vineyards and then back again. During ordinary times, shops and restaurants are yours for the visiting. Labyrinth. Put this one on your post-lockdown list.

The one thing you have to see: Landskron Castle Hike up to Burg Landskron and explore the ruins of a medieval/late renaissance castle overlooking the city. Here, you can get broad views of the town and valley, a fair amount of exercise, and the chance to envision what this castle might have looked like during it’s glory days. Getting There By car, Oppenheim is an hour from Kaiserslautern, 30 minutes from Wiesbaden and just over two hours north of Stuttgart. Visit the Deutsche Bahn website for train information. For U.S. government employees, including service members, remember to always follow command regulations, which may be different than host nation policies when it comes to travel.

Oppenheim has a winding cellar labyrinth that stretches beneath the city. It’s super cool (in both senses of the word) and offers guided tours.
