1st CBCS: Sharpening skills, creating solutions Story and photos by Airman 1st Class Joshua Magbanua 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Airmen assigned to the 1st Combat Communications Squadron conducted a readiness exercise Oct. 26 on Rhine Ordnance Barracks. The exercise, is expected to continue for approximately two weeks and is designed to test the mission capabilities of 1st CBCS Airmen. The combat communications Airmen also partnered with the 1st Air and Space Communications Operations Squadron and U.S. Army for this training event. Training activities include building and expanding networks, setting up satellite communications and integrating with counterparts from other branches of service. U.S. Air Force Capt. Alexander Roosma, 1st Combat Communications Squadron mission planning and operations flight commander, said the exercise will test his Airmen’s capability to cooperate with sister branches and prepare them for real-world operations. “The purpose of this exercise is to validate that our team is fully trained, our equipment is prepared and that we are ready to provide the communica-

backups for us and the Army.” U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Jesse Sargent, 1st CBCS tactical network operator, stressed the importance of taking exercises seriously, saying train-

ing events prepare Airmen for higher-level exercises and eventually real operations. See CBCS, Page 2

Sargent said that such readiness exercises are the reason for the 1st CBCS’s success. “It’s crucial that we imitate the real

world as much as possible because that’s what prepares us for game day,” he said. “We practice so much that when it comes to real-world contingency operations, we are able to effectively do what we do best from all facets.”

Sargent expressed pride in his squadron and in his career field, adding that training events give him an opportunity to improve his understanding about the communications career field and also sharpen his skills in his job.

November 10, 2017 “I love my job, and I love the chance to get out here,” he said. “It gives me a chance to hone my skills and learn about what I am doing and why I am doing and be a better technician overall.”

Light boxes are an option to treat seasonal affective disorder.

by Staff Sgt. Nesha Humes Stanton 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Moving away from home and settling into various locations all over the globe is common for the military lifestyle. The various time zones, cultural shifts and environmental changes affect service members and their families differently. Germany’s dark winter, in particular, can introduce its own set of challenges, such as seasonal affective disorder, a treatable form of depression dependent upon varying exposure to the sun. SAD comes and goes with the seasons, typically kicking off in the late fall and departing in the spring, according to the National Institute of Mental Health. With the hours of daylight decreasing, U.S. Air Force Maj. Ryan Buhite, 86th Medical Operations Squadron mental health element chief and psychologist, emphasizes the importance of seeking professional help before SAD impacts your work and lifestyle.

“If there’s a two-week period where you’re feeling down or depressed most of the days of the week, see your doctor,” Buhite stated. Buhite said seasonal affective disorder shares the same symptoms as depression: feelings of guilt, hopelessness and worthlessness. However, some of the symptoms more specific to SAD are carbohydrate cravings, social withdrawal and feeling like you want to hibernate. Prevention is key. Buhite advises to continue exercising in the morning to stimulate activity in addition to consulting with your primary care manager to take vitamin D supplements this winter. “It’s also really important to get out and socialize with your friends and family,” Buhite said. “And then, routines are important. You don’t want to get out of your daily routine in the winter. Yes, it’s more challenging when it’s cold to bundle up, but it’s really important to get outside.” The 86th MDOS mental health clinic offers cognitive behavioral therapy, and

the 86th MDOS family health clinic offers a behavioral health optimization program where a psychologist works with your PCM on mental health issues as well as physical health issues. In order to combat SAD, the 86th MDOS mental health clinic says medication is effective and also recommends speaking with your primary care manager or mental health specialists about a medication prescription, CBT or light therapy. “Cognitive behavioral therapy works on thinking about winter and the darkness in less negative ways,” Buhite said. “It also focuses on how to keep healthy routines that are helpful in countering the lack of light, such as work out in the morning, socialize with others, get outside, eat healthy, develop winter time interests and take vitamin D.” Another treatment option is purchasing a light box and sitting next to it for 20 to 60 minutes in the morning. “It helps the body awaken by decreasing the hormone melatonin that helps us stay

asleep at night” Buhite said. “If someone wants to do light therapy, the recommendations are for 10,000 lux of coolwhite fluorescent lights, which are about 20 times greater than ordinary indoor lighting. The light box helps to try to reset your biological clock and circadian rhythm.” Buhite also stated that individuals who pursue light therapy should do so under the supervision of a health professional since light therapy is not regulated by the Food and Drug Administration. “Though light therapy is very effective,” Buhite continued, “Research shows that

those that do light therapy are more likely to have their symptoms return in subsequent years if they do not use the light therapy in the future versus those who use cognitive behavioral therapy, who are less likely to have symptoms return the following year.” Active-duty members may call the 86th MDOS mental health clinic directly to schedule an appointment for CBT at 479-2390 and the appointment line at 479-2273 to schedule a BHOP appointment. All Department of Defense cardholders are encouraged to contact their PCM for SAD treatment options.

GERMAN POLIZEI CORNER

When to use winter tires in Germany Since Dec. 3, 2010, a German federal law has been in effect that specifically mandates the use of winter tires when conditions are icy. Winter tires have two kinds of markings: a snowflake, indicating it’s a snow tire; or M+S, indicating the tire is designed to work in “Matsch und Schnee,” meaning “mud and snow.” All-season or all-weather tires may also have the M+S marking, and they are also acceptable for winter driving. This law also applies to motorbikes, trucks and buses, regardless of whether the driver is

Green Dot training

Have you taken your annual Green Dot training? If not, it is not too late to sign up. This annual training increases awareness and prevention of interpersonal violence, to include sexual assault, domestic and interpersonal violence, and suicide. We are providing additional training opportunities in order to spread the Green Dot creed and culture to the entire community. This year, you have two choices for your training. If you completed the Green Dot train-

the owner or is renting the vehicle. Most German motorists know the old rule of thumb for putting snow tires on the vehicle: “von O bis O,” which means “from O to O.” It is short for “von Oktober bis Ostern,” meaning “from October to Easter.” It is recommended that motorists make the change from regular tires to snow tires in October and leave them on until Easter. Only snow tires without spikes or studs are allowed in Germany. Tires designed for snow function better than multipurpose tires. All tires should have at least 1.6 millimeters of tread depth, but for maximum safety, tires with less than 4 millimeters should be replaced. Winter tires offer better protection than all-season models, and it’s best if all four tires match. German automobile club officials recommend using tires that carry the “three peak mountain” seal. Tires with this mark meet the highest standards.

ing last year, you only need to take the Green Dot Refresher training, about 1 hour. If you have never taken the Green Dot training, you need to take the Green Dot Initial training, about 1.5 hours. Civilian attire is authorized. The 86th Airlift Wing Violence Prevention Integrators want all active-duty Air Force members and full-time Air Force civilians and non-appropriated funds employees to get this important training completed sooner rather than later. Sign up for your training now at the AF Green Dot SharePoint site or call the Violence Prevention Integrators at 480-1422. No one has to do everything, but everyone has to do something.

NOTE: A new traffic rule effective October 2024 will request snow or all-season tires with the three peak mountain seal. M+S will not be valid any longer. Vehicle owners, who still have or will buy tires with the M+S symbol until the end of 2017, are authorized to drive them until the end of September 2024. Tire manufacturers must produce tires with the three peak mountain seal starting January 2018. They cannot deliver tires with the M+S symbol to tire shops any longer. If police catch motorists driving in winter conditions without winter tires, the motorist will have to pay a fine of €60 and will receive a point against their license. If involved in an accident or if found blocking traffic in icy conditions without winter tires, the fine increases to €120 with a point against the motorist’s license. In addition, some insurance companies may deny coverage to motorists driving with summer tires on winter roads.

Learning the ropes

Soldiers, Seamen and Airmen simulate a rescue mission during a tower and rescue climbing training Oct. 19 on Ramstein Air Base. The course was hosted by 1st Communications Maintenance Squadron Airmen.

Story and photos by Staff Sgt. Nesha Humes Stanton 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Perched on a metal tower absorbing the afternoon sun, quiet crows peer down on ascending service members. Brightly colored ropes frame members’ equipment as they hang in the balance and simulate a rescue. While the two-story training climb is a refresher for some, all military members understand their lessons learned may one day be the difference between life or death for another. Airmen from the 1st Communications Maintenance Squadron hosted tower and rescue climbing training for Soldiers, Seamen and Airmen Oct. 19 on Ramstein Air Base. The training is instrumental to ensuring service members can climb for a rescue in the event of an emergency. Due to the nature of their job, Senior Airman Jordan Watson, 1st CMXS cable and antenna system technician and tower and rescue climbing training instructor, said practicing emergency procedures is necessary to warrant safety. “This is providing units that have a mission that requires climbing the correct training and techniques to safely

climb and, in the event of an emergency, rescue each other down,” he said. Watson said they can also act as first responders to climb heights firefighters cannot reach. “In a lot of locations, fire department or local emergency management services might not have the equipment on hand to come out and rescue,” Watson said. “We kind of act like first responders to that emergency.” In order to ease students into learning the ropes, the five-day training goes over terminology, knot tying, equipment inspection and best climbing practices. “(The students) are all very hands on and very interested,” Watson explained. “This has been a very easy class. Sometimes we have people who have trouble tying knots or with the rigging. But in this case, the class has kind of flown by. Everybody has been doing very well, being very communicative. … It’s pretty much close to ideal. (The students are) eager to learn.” U.S. Navy Petty Officer 2nd Class Samuel Powell, American Forces Network Europe headquarters internal communications electrician, said himself and his co-workers attended the training in preparation for their trip to Camp Bondsteel, an Army

Base in Ferizaj, Kosovo. “We’re setting up a new antenna dish for (Camp Bondsteel) so AFN can broadcast to their base,” Powell said. “The training is going good. The instructors are very hands on and letting us do a lot. They’re very qualified and highly motivated.” Although Powell has five years climbing experience during his mission on the USS Decatur, others like Spc.

Ryan Stidham, AFN-Europe headquarters technical services engineer, are new to the climb. “Its great training, and it’s given me the confidence in my equipment and gear.” Stidham said. “I feel more confident now to climb the towers.” The 1st CMXS are the sole certifiers for tower and rescue climbing training in U.S. Air Forces in Europe and Air Forces Africa.

Making pharmacy a better experience by Senior Airman Elizabeth Baker 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs The 86th Medical Support Squadron Pharmacy’s mission is to deliver superior patient care for warriors and families. Pharmacy personnel are trying to make care better by reducing wait times and making customers aware of available programs. Picking up a prescription at the Ramstein Pharmacy can take up to an hour at peak times. The pharmacy staff thinks that is too long to deliver the trusted care patients need, and personnel hope to reduce wait times to an average of 15 minutes. Yet, they will only be able to reach that goal with cooperation from patients. Master Sgt. Jonathan Strom, 86th MDSS Pharmacy flight chief, said there are several things patients can do to reduce their wait times, emphasizing that when a customer reduces their wait time, they’re reducing the wait time for others. Following are some tips.

Don’t call the pharmacy for refills. Use the mandatory refill call-in line or Tricare online.

“Phone calls are a killer,” Strom said. “They slow us down a lot.” Strom said the refill call-in line is a fast and easy automated system. It saves time for pharmacy personnel, the customer and other customers waiting. Once the customer calls in their prescription, they can pick it up after 2 p.m. the following day. Tricare online users can do the same, but they need to create an account before they can use the service. Tricare online also offers a variety of other options. “Unless a patient just came from an appointment where they received a new prescription from their provider, they should only be coming here to pick up their prescriptions,” Strom said. “They should not be waiting.” Strom said if a patient calls in their prescription using an established method, their medications should be

ready and waiting for them when they arrive. This is not just for the patient’s convenience. “If a patient leaves an appointment with their provider and they’re receiving something new, they often have to wait behind people who could have called in their prescription and been gone already,” Strom said. Further, for the patients who call in their prescriptions through the automated line, the pharmacy staff can handle problems with the order, such as out-of-stock medications, before the patient arrives. Strom emphasized that there are legitimate reasons to call the pharmacy. “We encourage any calls to answer

medication concerns for patients,” Strom said. The call-in line is 06371-86-5601 or 480-5601. The TriCare online address is https://www.Tricare.mil.

Use pickup locations.

There are multiple pickup locations and availability times. Aside from the Ramstein Pharmacy at the 86th Medical Group main clinic, there is also the Script Center in the Base Exchange, which looks like a small vending machine, and at the Landstuhl Regional Medical Center Pharmacy. Using other pickup locations may be more convenient and cuts down on lines at the pharmacy. Have a military identification card and health insurance card out and ready at the window. “It seems small, but it slows us down if patients don’t have their identification cards ready when they come to the window,” Strom said. “If we have 50 patients per day, it adds up.”

Airman 1st Class Jasiah Sellars, 86th Medical Squadron Pharmacy apprentice, fills a prescription from an automated system Oct. 25 on Ramstein Air Base. Pharmacy customers can reduce their wait times by using automated systems to call in refills and by utilizing various pickup locations.

Reading the label can save a customer a call to the pharmacy by answering important questions, such as when the prescription expires and how many refills are available. A diagram for reference is included in the photos above. Customers should direct questions

about expired prescriptions and used up refills to their primary care manager, not to the pharmacy. Ramstein Pharmacy hours are 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday with the exception of federal holidays and authorized down days.

Cough, cold, and allergy sufferers do not need a medical appointment.

The pharmacist-run Cough, Cold and Allergy clinic operates from 8 to 9:30 a.m. daily at the Family Practice Clinic.

Over-the-counter medications are available for free on a walk-in basis.

The over-the-counter medication program is a way for customers to make sure they are getting the right over-the-counter medication at no cost. “Over-the-counter is self-initiated care,” Strom said. “If a person needs over-the-counter medication, they can come to the Ramstein Pharmacy lobby and fill out a form that lists their symptoms and what medication they think they need. Our pharmacists will analyze it and make sure they get the right medicine.” Individuals are generally allowed to have three items per month, Strom said. The forms are located to the left of the lobby entrance.

Service dogs: Not your average household pet Story and photos by Airman 1st Class Devin M. Rumbaugh 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs For most people, having a dog around the house consists mainly of taking care of the pet. Since WWI, dogs have been trained to do much more than provide passive security for the family. From calming a person with post-traumatic stress disorder to being able to dial 911 on the phone, service dogs have separated themselves from the rest of the pack. Members of an organization specializing in the training of service dogs recently held a service dog demonstration in Kaiserslautern to show and explain how service dogs differ from their average household counterparts. The members explained that the selection for service dogs starts at birth. A trainer will select individual puppies from a litter based on the behavior of the puppy, looking for specific characteristics. After being cared for by a veterinarian, a family will raise and provide basic behavior training for the puppy until it is about 1 1/2 years old. The dogs will then be trained for another six months to learn how to help with more specific physical disabilities, mental illnesses like PTSD or even to visit hospitals and schools. Marina Dahinten, a veteran service dog trainer and volunteer, said the dogs learn certain behaviors early on in their lives and are taught not to bark unless it is an emergency situation. They are also taught to open drawers, close doors, and remove

things like socks and hats. After the completion of training, the search for the perfect human candidate begins. The matching process involves a trainer selecting four or five different dogs that are trained for the candidate’s disability. Once the match has been made, the pair will train for a couple months together before they are officially made a team. “Basically, the person doesn’t choose the dog; it’s mostly the dog that chooses the person,” said Richard

Rice, a U.S. Army veteran and partner with service dog Abby. “We do it like that because if the dog doesn’t have any will to work with that person, they won’t make a good team. We believe happy dog, happy life.” Being made a team means the pair will spend their time exclusively training together and the service dog will live with the member. “People have many well-trained house pets, but what you don’t always have is the dog thinking along with the person,” Dahinten said. “We

know one man who ended up in a wheelchair because of a parachuting accident. One day when Tom was getting out of his van to get into his wheelchair positioned next to it, he fell. Without even giving his service dog Fay a command, Fay jumped into his van, grabbed his phone and handed him the phone so he could call for assistance.” Dahinten further explained that Fay was only able to help Tom because of her sensitivity to her partner’s needs. Chris Holland, a U.S. Army veteran and partner of service dog Pepper, said the organization knew exactly which dog would match perfectly with him when he entered the program to receive a service dog. Holland said Pepper barked a lot when they would train together. He said that he was intimidated at first but discovered Pepper had a huge passion for the training they were doing together. “The first couple weeks went really slow. I always had this thing in the back of my head: It wasn’t going to happen, and I was always going to get kicked out,” Holland said. “Once I got over that fear, Pepper and I merged as one. Now I know what (upsets him); he knows what (upsets me). Now we’re like an old married couple.” Editor’s note: This is a two-part series. Building bridges between two communities

The German-American Community Office Sign stands outside the office’s building next to a statue of a fish with wings Oct. 26 at Kaiserslautern. GACO serves as a link between the German and American populations in the Kaiserslautern Military Community.

Story and photo by Airman 1st Class Joshua Magbanua 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Being introduced to a new culture can be exciting but also sometimes intimidating. This is especially true for both Americans and Germans in the Kaiserslautern Military Community. The KMC hosts more than 50,000 U.S. military members, civilians and their families, making it the largest community of Americans outside the U.S. The sheer numbers alone can make community relations in the KMC a daunting challenge. However, it is a challenge the German-American Community Office in Kaiserslautern has accepted. “We have an office, which is open every day in the heart of the KMC,” said Roberto da Costa, GACO chief of operations. “It is open for Germans, Americans and for all nations to come and contact the U.S. military; to ask questions and get help.” Da Costa described GACO as a joint venture between the 86th Airlift Wing and the city of Kaiserslautern, providing a medium of communication between the German and American communities since 2003. “We would like to let our Airmen know we are out there in the commu-

nity for them. We are there to support them and help make their transition smooth,” da Costa said. “At the same time, we want to show the German community that there is a place available for them to come ask questions about interacting with the American community.” Da Costa placed GACO’s mission into two categories: the local level and the political level. While the personal inquiries coming from various individuals fall under the personal level, the political level involves coordinating or supporting events involving officials from the U.S. military and German government, he said. In the past, GACO has supported local, national and international officials such as the Japanese ambassador to Germany, the U.S. secretary of the Air Force, congressional delegates from Washington D.C., the consul general of the Rhineland Palatinate, and many other political and military figures from the U.S. and Germany. Sissi Koesling, GACO representative for the city of Kaiserslautern, said the office is “the only one of its kind,” adding that GACO’s mission ranges from answering basic inquiries to helping people with very personal questions. “German children adopted and raised by American families mostly

right after World War II start looking for their biological parents when they get to a certain age,” Koesling said. “Children of German mothers who never met their American father try to find the other half of their personality. German widows of late retired U.S. military members seek assistance in processing paperwork with the U.S. authorities.” Koesling continued to list examples of the many kinds of inquiries GACO deals with, such as Boy Scout troops looking for projects in Germany, people inquiring about visa-related issues and even Americans tracing their German heritage. In a nutshell, both da Costa and Koesling agree that their office’s mission is very diverse. Andrea Oliver, director of U.S. relations for the Kaiserslautern city government, praised GACO’s work, saying community relations are an important aspect of life in both the American and German communities. “If you have good community relations and a level of personal interaction, you will be able to understand each other even in difficult times,” she said. “Everybody can be friends when all is good, but we all know it isn’t always good. It’s always better to approach challenging situations together as one people even though

we are two communities.” Oliver said she has worked for the city of Kaiserslautern for 17 years and noted that some local residents would like to have a closer relationship with the American community. “I’ve just seen a very positive acceptance of the military presence and a desire on the part of community leadership to integrate with the American community,” she said. Da Costa said he wishes for GACO to continue building bridges between the American and German communities and for the office to stand as a testimony of openness and transparency between the two. “My vision is to make it more and more the symbol of German and American friendship,” he said. “We have an open gate in the heart of their community. It shows that we are by no means hiding. … It’s the contrary; we are here. We have an open office and you can come to us and ask all questions, and we will respond to them, and we will try to support you.” Those interested in making an inquiry to GACO can call 0631-3633010 or email info@gaco-kl.de The office’s business hours are 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday to Wednesday, 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday, and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday.

American Diabetes Month: Awareness promotes prevention Story and photo by Airman 1st Class Kristof Rixmann 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs According to the American Diabetes Association, 1.25 million American children and adults have type one diabetes. One of them is Senior Master Sgt. Denise McCants, 86th Logistics Readiness Squadron superintendent of operations compliance flight. She sat down to share her experiences and advice in dealing with diabetes in the Air Force to help raise awareness about American Diabetes Month which is commemorated every November. The Mayo Clinic reports weight and inactivity to be the primary risk factors leading to diabetes so as an active member in the Air Force, McCants was taken by surprise when diagnosed with the disease in 2016. “We have type two diabetes that runs in my family but type one diabetes is a very rare autoimmune disease so we were all pretty shocked by the news when I got my diagnosis,” McCants said. SMSgt McCants has a form of diabetes referred to as Latent autoimmune diabetes of adults (aka LADA). LADA is a form of diabetes that occurs in adulthood, often with a slower onset of type one diabetes diagnosed in children. According to medical officials, adults with LADA may initially be diagnosed incorrectly as having type two diabetes based on their age, particularly if they have risk factors for type two diabetes such as a strong family history or obesity. The diagnosis of LADA is typically confirmed once the patient is referred to a specialist. Prior to her diagnosis, McCants did not attribute symptoms, such as confusion and dizziness, to diabetes. She felt it was most likely due to stress so it went undiagnosed for some time. When she was diagnosed, her blood sugar levels were briefly 1,000 milligrams

Senior Master Sgt. Denise McCants, 86th Logistics Readiness Squadron superintendent of operations compliance flight discusses her diagnosis with Maj. Asia Roberson, 86th Medical Management Squadron registered nurse, Nov. 7 on Ramstein Air Base. The American Diabetes Association has made the month of Nov. of each year American Diabetes Month in an effort to raise awareness about the disease.

per deciliter before being normalized. Average blood sugar levels generally read between 100 to 180 mg/dL. Capt. Mumbi Ngugi, 86th Medical Operations Squadron physician assistant, said a prolonged high blood sugar level can result in complications such as stroke, heart attack, kidney problems, blindness, and even amputation. For this reason it is vital for individuals to be seen by a medical professional as earlya as possible should they feel any of these symptoms for a prolonged duration. Ever since the diagnosis, however, McCants has been proactive in her diabetes management. “McCants has been a model patient, embracing this rare diagnosis fully and living her life to the fullest,” Ngugi said. “She is always with a smile, knows when to seek help, is very compliant

with care and is a role model for people living not only with diabetes but other chronic ailments as well.” McCants believes the key to managing diabetes is by having a strict schedule. Without a strict schedule and regular monitoring two things may occur. Too high of a blood sugar level can result in serious health complications but too much insulin, resulting in too low of a blood sugar level, can result in a patient passing out and falling into a coma. “For these reasons it is imperative for people with type one diabetes to get enough sleep because if you don’t get enough sleep your blood sugar will spike,” McCants said. “If you don’t eat properly and at scheduled times your blood sugar will spike. On the other hand, if you don’t eat enough your blood sugar will be too low. So, if your diet

and sleep does not have structure it will be very hard for you to accurately measure how much insulin you might need, which can be dangerous.” Although there are some obstacles to overcome, according to Ngugi, Air Force members that may have this condition are reminded a type two diabetes diagnosis is a currently retainable condition as per the Medical Standards Directory guidance. Even though type one diabetes is currently not a retainable condition, all final medical retainability decisions are made on a case-by-case basis by the Air Force Personnel Center. Patients with conditions like McCants are able to lead normal lives. “No matter what your circumstances are you can overcome it and you don’t have to let the disease control you.”

Puppy buyers should obey hints

Courtesy of the 86th Mission Support Group Christmas is approaching fast, and it is time to get presents. Some people might think a puppy is a nice Christmas present. Acquiring a new puppy should be a joyous event. However, it is important for buyers to be aware of unscrupulous individuals who sell puppies. Regrettably, some of these puppies become sick or even die shortly after their purchase, resulting in large veterinary bills and heartbroken buyers.

Here are a few helpful hints to increase the likelihood of making the right choice when buying a puppy: Purchase your puppy from a local source. Make sure you meet with the seller and write down the seller’s name, full address and phone number. Ask the seller for a list of references that includes previous buyers and other breeders. Visit the puppy two or three times before making the purchase. This will allow you to check out the facility more than once and will also let you better understand the animal’s actual

temperament and health. Insist on seeing the mother and also inspect her. Examine both the puppy’s and the mother’s vaccination records. If the record is in a foreign language, make sure to ask a local veterinarian’s office what the vaccinations cover. Also, take notes as to the vaccination dates and the age of the animal when it was vaccinated as this will help the vet’s office verify that the animals are on an adequate vaccination schedule. Inspect the actual pedigree. Pedigrees should have both

the Verband fuer Hundewesen and Federation Cynologique Internationale symbols, and the dogs with these pedigrees must be identified by either an individual tattoo or be microchipped. These identification numbers must appear in the pedigree as well as the numbers from the animal’s ancestors. For further advice, consult with a veterinarian. Also, remember that if one of the owner’s in the household is German, the puppy needs to be registered with German authorities.

Artists present creative works in Ramstein by Petra Lessoing 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs

The culture and convention center, Haus des Buergers, in Ramstein-Miesenbach, will open its doors for a pre-Christmas creative market Saturday and Sunday. “Many of the more than 70 hobby artists and crafters from Rheinland-Pfalz, Saarland, Hessen, Nordrhein-Westfalen and Baden-Wuerrtemberg will present their creative works and allow visitors to watch them working,” said organizer Marita Altherr. Children honor St. Martin in lantern processions by Petra Lessoing 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs

St. Martin divides his coat during the Martin’s play, which takes place after the parade through town tonight.

The St. Martin’s play will be presented, the bonfire will be lit and pretzels and Glühwein will be available. In Otterberg, participants will meet at IGS school, Schulstrasse 2 at 5:30 p.m. today to walk to the kindergarten, where the bonfire will be lit. In Otterbach, the walk with lanterns will begin at 6 p.m. today and lead from the Catholic church, Kirchenstrasse 2, to the festgrounds, where St. Martin will divide his coat. In Weilerbach, children and parents meet at 5:30 p.m. today at Westpfalzschule, In der Nasserde 30. Martin of Tours was born in the year 316 or 317 as the son of a Roman civil servant. At age 15, he joined the Emperor’s cavalry. One cold winter day, he was riding through country when a shivering beggar came his way asking for alms. Since Martin had neither food nor money, he cut his robe in half with his sword and gave a piece to the freezing man. Supposedly, the following night Jesus appeared in Martin’s dream and explained how he had been the freezing beggar, who Martin had given half his robe to. This event changed the soldier’s life. He left the army, got baptized and became a student of Hilarius of Poitiers. In 356, after Martin’s teacher was banned and he failed to convert his father and others to the teachings of Hilarius, he left for an island near Genua, where he lived as a hermit. In 360, Martin gave up his solitary life to join Hilarius again who returned to Poitiers. In 361, he founded the first

Gallic monastery in Liguge. In 371, the clergy and the people from Tours elected him for bishop. In 375, he established Marmoutier, a monastery for ascetic life and a school for bishops. Martin kept trying to evangelize pagans. On Nov. 8, 397, during a pastoral trip to Candes, he died. Thousand of monks, consecrated virgins and others went to his funeral Nov. 11. Years later, a basilica with the St. Martin Abbey was built on top of Martin’s gravesite. King Chlodwig elected Martin as patron of the Francs. The tradition of the lanterns goes back to former times, when people lit candles to honor a saint and when lanterns were put up everywhere in town when a bishop came for a visit. The custom of lighting a bonfire after the lantern procession represents the beginning of festivities. In former times, most of the work on the fields had been completed and

Saturday is St. Martin’s Day. Traditionally, children and parents will walk in lantern processions to honor St. Martin, the patron of the poor and friend of children. In Kaiserslautern, Ramstein, Landstuhl and other villages of the KMC, parishes and kindergartens organize lantern processions where children carry lanterns, which they created in kindergarten or school, and sing Martin songs. Usually the walk starts at a church and goes to a public square. A man on horseback dressed like a Roman soldier and representing Saint Martin, accompanies the children. When they reach the square, they will begin the Martin’s play, the bonfire is lit and Martin’s pretzels are distributed. In Kaiserslautern, a big lantern procession will start 6 p.m. Saturday from St. Martin’s Church near St. Martinsplatz at the beginning of Steinstrasse and end in front of the Rathaus (city hall). Here St. Martin will divide his coat and the bonfire will be lit. In other communities, kindergarten children will meet tonight. In Landstuhl city, St. Martin’s parade will begin at 6 p.m. today with a play at Heilig-Geist-Kirche and end at the Altenzentrum (meeting place for senior citizens) with the fire and the sale of Martin’s pretzels, tea and Glühwein. In Ramstein-Miesenbach, festivities will start at 5:30 p.m. today in the Catholic church, Landstuhlerstrasse 6. Then the lantern procession with St. Martin on a horse and musicians will go through town.

The Foreigner (R) "The Foreigner," tells the story of humble London businessman Quan, whose longburied past erupts in a revenge-fueled vendetta when the only person left for him to love — his teenage daughter — is taken from him in a senseless act of politicallymotivated terrorism. In his relentless search for the identity of the terrorists, Quan is forced into a cat-and-mouse conflict with a British government official, whose own past may hold clues to the identities of the elusive killers. Starring: Jackie Chan, Pierce Brosnan Michael McElhatton, Charlie Murphy and expectations of the Super Bowl for moms: Christmas. And if creating a more perfect holiday for their families wasn't hard enough, they have to do all of that while hosting and entertaining their own mothers. By the end of the journey, our moms will redefine how to make the holidays special for all and discover a closer relationship with their mothers. Starring: Mila Kunis, Kristen Bell, Kathryn Hahn, Jay Hernandez

What starts out as a lavish train ride through Europe quickly unfolds into one of the most stylish, suspenseful and thrilling mysteries ever told. From the novel by best-selling author Agatha Christie, "Murder on the Orient Express" tells the tale of thirteen strangers stranded on a train, where everyone's a suspect. One man must race against time to solve the puzzle before the murderer strikes again. Starring: Kenneth Branagh, Penélope Cruz, Willem Dafoe, Judi Dench

Thor: Ragnarok (PG-13) Thor is imprisoned on the other side of the universe without his mighty hammer and finds himself in a race against time to get back to Asgard to stop Ragnarok — the destruction of his homeworld and the end of Asgardian civilization — at the hands of an all-powerful new threat, the ruthless Hela. But first he must survive a deadly gladiatorial contest that pits him against his former ally and fellow Avenger — the Incredible Hulk.
