Frank Gorenc, U.S. Air Forces in Europe and Air Forces Africa commander, presented the 86th Airlift Wing $250,000 for winning the Innovation Madness tournament May 1 on Ramstein. The inaugural competition started with nine wings from around USAFE-AFAFRICA competing with one another in a tournament style match to determine which wing promotes the best innovative culture. Judges in the contest examined cost-saving changes that wings throughout USAFEAFAFRICA implemented in the past two years. See INNOVATION, Page 2

Ramstein Intermediate School hosts career day “It’s been great. The students are really enjoying their time experiencing different jobs that they never knew were around,” said Anne Hubbard, RIS counselor. “They are really excited by some of the props some of the presenters brought.” RIS Career Day is one event that the school uses to educate children about what their parents do in the military and the types of careers available. The children had the opportunity to ride inside a mine-resistant, ambush-protected vehicle and an armored sedan, listen to band members, learn about pest

Unfamiliar territory: my memorable introduction to RAB

COMMENTARY

by Airman 1st Class Lane T. Plummer 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs A new life was waiting for me. At 19 years old, I was leaving everything I had grown to love or learn to live with: my friends, my family and my home. I was anxious to get on the plane, but I couldn’t leave without one last hug from my parents. It wasn’t like the quick hugs I’d give to my friends before we enjoyed our weekends from school. This time I embraced my mom and held her, ignoring the occasional glance from a passing stranger in the bustling airport around me. The stewardesses called out for my flight; thus, my journey began. About 4,500 miles later, I was at Ramstein Air Base, Germany, sore and exhausted from the seven-hour flight. Stepping off the plane and out

of the terminal, I surveyed the area while trying to shield my face from the harsh sunlight — European hatchbacks and large, foreign trees surrounded me. It became clear I was no longer in rural Illinois. Visiting my work center, I was quickly established as the new Airman of public affairs on Ramstein. I was assigned a camera bag and a voice recorder and was told my mission — to capture and tell the stories of Airmen across the Air Force. Not long after arriving at my shop, I was assigned to go through the First Term Airman Center. FTAC is a weeklong course that gives first-term Airmen the necessary tools and guidance to help ease their transition between training and the operational Air Force. I met people that wanted me to feel as if I wasn’t living away from home, but rather in a new one.

The sense of scale I gained from FTAC surprised me. I learned that Ramstein is a grand machine with dozens of cogs inside of it, and no matter the size of the cog, each one has to work in order for the machine to properly function. However, it wasn’t the lessons I learned sitting in a chair that stuck with me the most; it was the group of friends I found that made the days so much more enjoyable. With these friends I had a way to safely travel around Germany. With them I experienced my first trips away from Ramstein to truly immerse myself in the culture. We endured long, beautiful train rides and enormous, loud soccer matches in interesting cities like Augsburg, Gelsenkirchen and Mainz. These trips are times in my life I will never forget. To my pleasant surprise, FTAC wouldn’t end up being the last

time I worked alongside these friends. I was then selected to participate in a two-week program in which Airmen are tasked to help keep Ramstein the beautiful base that it is. Both weeks I was overwhelmed with sunshine (the kind with warm air that begged for outdoor activities and transformed your car cabin into a stove). It was a truly amazing time, and it only made me more excited for what’s next. Now, I am back working in my shop. Looking back on these already eventful four weeks, I’ve realized how much I have to be thankful for. When I was walking away from my family at the airport for the last time, I would’ve never fathomed that I would call Ramstein a home. However, here I am with awesome friends and an inviting group of people to work with — it’s truly a new life I’m excited to experience.

“We wanted to inspire competition to come up with as many innovative ideas as possible,” Gorenc said. “The Air Force has a long history of doing things better, faster and cheaper, and the 86th AW has continued that tradition.” Each wing submitted their innovative ideas along with the money and man-hours saved. Those ideas also included how their units completed the mission in more efficient ways. In total, the nine wings submitted 477 innovations, saving the Air Force at least $28 million and 115,000 man-hours a year. “This tournament was a great opportunity to highlight what our folks do every day,” said Brig. Gen. Patrick X. Mordente, 86th AW commander. “The Air Force succeeds because of the Airmen, and though we won the trophy I think the real winners are the Airmen and families across USAFE who can benefit from these savings.” Among the ideas that netted the 86th AW the top prize is the adjustment of local nationals’ schedules to avoid weekend and holiday work, which resulted in an annual savings of more than $700,000, and the repair of aircraft communication cords in-house rather than outside the Air Force logistics network which saves

control and participate in many more activities. “(The students) don’t all know the technical parts, and they don’t know the specifics of what their parents are doing,” Hubbard said. “This is a real eye-opener for some of the kids.” While it was beneficial for the children, they were not the only ones to gain something that day. “When I grew up, we never had career days like this,” said Senior Airman Ethan Harris, 86th Vehicle Readiness Squadron mechanic and volunteer. “I am glad to be a part of helping them learn more about specialties in the military and getting to show my job.” Whether learning about the importance of MRAPs or learning about the variety of careers, the event organizers hope they can showcase something new and develop an appreciation for what the children's parents may do.

86th MDG shares medical knowledge with local health care providers

Col. Brian Agee, 86th Aerospace Medicine Squadron commander, briefs civilian health care providers from all over Germany on the 86th AMDS' mission during a visit April 23 on Ramstein.

ealth care providers from all over Ger-many visited Ramstein on April 23 to meet with members of the 86th Medical Group. The visit allowed the 86th MDG to give more than 40 host nation providers an overview of their mission and to exchange knowledge to better serve patients. “It’s important for us to develop a partnership with our civilian providers because they are an integral part of our overall mission,” said Lt. Col. Shawn McFarland, 86th MDG medical chief of staff. “The 86th MDG is a clinic. First, we refer patients to Landstuhl Regional Medical Center. The things that can’t be seen there or within our military network are then deferred out to our civilian network.” Leadership from all squadrons in the 86th MDG had the opportunity to brief their guests on their roles in the

military. The guests were also able to tour medical facilities throughout Ramstein. For the host nation providers, getting the chance to meet and talk to the Airmen of the 86th MDG was a pleasure. “I’ve been so impressed with the organization of this tour,” said Yvelise Alfano, Kindsbach clinical psychotherapist. “I think it’s really important to have the connection to the actual facility that you work with because seeing is knowing. You can talk on the phone, but not really know what it’s like. It’s a valuable service to actually see the facility, meet the personnel and see the welcome that everyone gets. It’s been said so many times how

much the people here value the service of the providers in the community.” Tours such as these not only build better processes and understanding of the Air Force, they also build stronger professional relationships amongst health care providers, military and civilians. “Getting to talk to the visitors in person was very refreshing,” said Capt. Ryan Garrison, 86th Medical Support Squadron diagnostic and therapeutic flight commander. “I was able to connect with the area laboratory professionals, and they were kind enough to invite me to tour their facilities.” With military members constantly moving to new

AF establishes new key developmental reporting identifiers by Master Sgt. Lesley Waters Secretary of the Air Force Public Affairs Command Information WASHINGTON — The Air Force has established four new reporting identifiers to identify Airmen serving in key developmental positions outside of their control Air Force specialty, effective April 30. The four new key developmental position reporting identifiers are: key developmental senior master sergeant and chief master sergeant enlisted positions on headquarters Air Force staff and the Air Force Senior Noncommissioned Officer Academy; enlisted engagement manager/international affairs; secretary of the Air Force enlisted legislative fellows; and Military Entrance Processing Command senior enlisted advisor. “These positions confirm our continued commitment to the development of our enlisted force, and the ability for enlisted Airmen to serve at the highest levels,” said Chief Master Sergeant of the Air Force James A. Cody. Airmen assigned to these positions will be considered performing outside of their normal career progression pattern, requiring a different duty Air Force specialty code from the current AFSC. Their duty AFSC will reflect the reporting identifier. The Airman’s control AFSC will match the primary Air Force specialty code (except for

skill level, if necessary). For example: Senior Master Sgt. Smith, 3S091, is selected for 9N100 duties. Smith’s CAFSC will remain 3S091, the primary AFSC will remain 3S091 and the DAFSC will be updated to 9N100. Eligibility to serve in one of these positions includes the following: • Grades: senior master sergeant — chief master sergeant • Skill level commensurate with grade. • Overall enlisted performance report rating of 5 on the last three enlisted performance reports. • 80 percent or above on the last two fitness tests, or 90 percent or above on the most recent fitness test, with no failure on any portion within the last 12 months. • No assignment on file — personnel with an approved follow-on assignment can be considered on a case-by-case basis. Airmen receiving a selective reenlistment bonus are eligible to apply. For those selected to serve in a key developmental position, future SRB payments will be affected. Although members would maintain their primary and control AFSCs and could stay qualified within their respective AFSCs, they would no longer serve within the specialty, which is a requirement to maintain SRB payments. For Airmen to avoid recoupment of an SRB, they must have completed at least 50 percent of the cur-

rent enlistment and agree to waive all remaining payments. However, if an Airman accepts a key developmental position before completing at least 50 percent of the current enlistment, recoupment will be required. Permanent change of station consideration: • For permanent change of station consideration, an Airman’s return from an overseas date must be within the report-no–later-than-date window to apply. Airmen with an indefinite overseas return date are eligible for nomination and PCS consideration.

• Airmen stationed stateside must have at least 24 months’ time on station as of the RNLTD to be eligible to PCS. Approximately six months prior to a senior master sergeant key developmental position becoming vacant, the vacancy will be advertised on the Equal Plus listing. The key developmental chief master sergeant enlisted positions on headquarters Air Force staff and the Air Force Senior Noncommissioned Officer Academy commandant position will be filled through the Air Force Chief’s

Group nomination process. Once the advertisement period ends, the Air Force Personnel Center enlisted assignments branch will forward eligible applications to the hiring authority for selection. “The Airmen serving in these positions will shape our future,” Cody said. “They will lead Air Force initiatives and influence future policies. The Air Force will benefit for years to come.” Key developmental position reporting identifiers are outlined in the enlisted classification directory accessible via the MyPers website.

Determining legal residency for military members Courtesy of the 86th Airlift Wing Judge Advocate office

R

esidency plays a crucial role in determining eligibility for voting and elections, income taxes, access to courts and other important aspects of one’s life. As such, choosing the appropriate residence is an important part of a person’s life. Legal residence, also known as a person’s domicile, is where the permanent home or principal establishment where one considers “home,” is

intended to be returned to after that person is absent. For a civilian, the concept of a home of record and legal residence is fairly simple — they are usually the same thing and identify the state where the civilian lives and works. However, for military members, the terms are not as clear especially for those serving overseas. The state of legal residence may change throughout a person’s life. However, service members can’t just pick a state of their desire; there are rules and steps that need to be taken.

In order to legally change the state of legal residence, members must be physically present in the new state and intend to remain in the new state permanently, or they should treat that location as their permanent home. Intent to abandon a previous legal residence is a key component to changing residency. While many steps can be taken to establish intent, it is a collection of several actions that solidify the determination. Actions taken to show a member’s intent to make a state their legal residence include: obtaining a

driver’s license, registering to vote, voting, registering a vehicle, paying state taxes and taking any other verifiable actions that could be considered as an intention to remain a state resident. When done with the aforementioned steps, service members should complete a DD Form 2058, State of Legal Residence Certificate, and turn it in to the finance office or equivalent. Note that naming a state on the See ReSidency, Page 10

Airman 1st Class Robert Thomson, 86th Aircraft Maintenance Squadron crew chief, washes the tail of a C-130J Super Hercules April 20 on Ramstein. While washing the aircraft, safety is the number one concern for anyone participating in the washing — they are required to wear full-body protective gear.

Two Airmen from the 86th Aircraft Maintenance Squadron assess a C-130J Super Hercules before washing it. All C-130Js at Ramstein are washed regularly for corrosion prevention and control. Keeping major structural components clean helps improve the life span of aircraft, thus keeping them operational longer.

An Airman from the 86th Aircraft Maintenance Squadron rinses a wing of a C-130J Super Hercules with water. Aircraft washing is a vital part of the mission, and if C-130Js are not washed regularly, they can begin to corrode and cause damage yielding it unsafe to operate. As Airmen perform washing procedures, safety is paramount.

Residency, from Page 6

form does not make a person a legal resident of that state; it just means they will have the correct state taxes withheld from their pay. State of legal residence is not to be confused with a service member’s home of record. The home of record is the state where one first joined the military. It does not apply to dependents. Think of home of record as a term the military uses to determine a number of military benefits, such as travel allowances and transportation expenses, particularly upon separation. One’s home of record does not change unless the information was entered incorrectly or there is a break in service. The Service Members Civil Relief Act allows military members to live in one

state and claim another state as their legal residence. This can sometimes result in a tax advantage because several states exempt military pay from being taxed. Military spouses have the same domicile requirements as active-duty members with a few limited rights under the Military Spouses Residency Relief Act. MSRRA gives military spouses the right to retain their state of legal residence, but does not automatically allow one to inherit the residence or domicile of his or her military spouse upon marriage. While the rules for spouses and service members are similar, it is best to seek advice from the legal office. For more information or to schedule an appointment, contact the 86th Airlift Wing Legal Office at 480-5911 or 06371-47-5911.

Ramstein youth wins European Military Youth of the Year award by Andrea Hoover 86th Force Support Squadron Vogelweh Teen Center A Vogelweh Teen Center member was recently named the 2015 European Military Youth of the Year. RianSimone Harris, daughter of Master Sgt. Shaun and Tatineesha Harris, won the title after competing in Wiesbaden, Germany against representatives from U.S. Army Europe and U.S. Naval Forces Europe representatives. The Boys and Girls Club of America established the Youth of the Year program in 1947 to enable young people’s character, personal growth and leadership qualities to be fostered in a variety of teen club programming. “I’m so excited,” said Sergeant Harris, 435th Security Forces Squadron first sergeant. “For me as a military member, you look at how successful you have been in your career. My biggest success is my kids. The fact that she won makes me feel proud because I know

She also served as the vice president of the student body as well as the president of the National Honor Society and the Vogelweh Teen Center Keystone Club, which is an affiliate of the Boys and Girls Club of America. RianSimone also plays the guitar, has leading roles in her school’s theatrical productions and KMC Onstage

productions, and is a member of the track and field, and cross-country teams. Along with the recognition, RianSimone also received a $5,000 scholarship, which may come in handy as she plans to study sociology and criminology at Point Loma Nazarene University in San Diego, Calif. She will move on to compete for the 2015 Overseas Region Military Youth of the Year award in Tokyo, Japan, this June.

Changes in schedule for RIP, ROP Courtesy of the 786th Force Support Squadron The Ramstein Inprocessing and Outprocessing centers will be changing their weekly schedule. Effective May 11, the twophase ROP sessions will be held every Monday, and the two-day RIP sessions will be held Tuesday and Wednesdays or Thursday and Fridays with show times at 7 a.m. The ROP line is a mandatory two-phased informational briefing established to assist members in their transition out of Ramstein. All members must attend ROP Phase 1 in order to access their Virtual Military Personnel Flight checklist. Once initial outprocessing actions are complete and members receive their orders, they may attend ROP Phase 2. Requirements for Phase 2 also include having permanent change of station orders in-hand and an established Port Call Date from the traffic management

office’s passenger travel office. Members must sign up prior to attending the ROP line; this can be done via the SharePoint link provided in the initial assignment notification email sent by the 786th Force Support Squadron MPF Outbound Assignments. The RIP line is a mandatory two-day session established to ensure members meet inprocessing requirements within 72 hours of arrival. Members must bring their military ID card, 10 copies of their PCS orders, current information assurance certificate and all receipts associated with expenses incurred during their PCS. This will assist in making the transition process more efficient. There is no requirement to sign up prior to attending the RIP line. Members should attend the RIP line the first available two-day session after their arrival. For additional information, call 480-6559 or 0637147-6559.

Student dependents may be eligible for funded travel Courtesy of the 86th Comptroller Squadron Command-sponsored dependents attending school in the U.S. may be eligible for government-funded travel to visit family stationed at a permanent duty station outside of the continental United States. However, there are a few requirements that must be met in order to be eligible for this entitlement. In accordance with the Joint Travel Regulation, Chapter 7, Part C, the student must travel to the sponsor’s current duty station on permanent change of station orders prior to traveling on student dependent travel orders. The dependent must be a full-time student at a school accredited by an organization recognized by the Secretary of Defense. This includes secondary schools, undergraduate col-

leges or universities, graduate education and approved vocational institutions. A student who is attending a school outside the U.S. for no longer than one year under a program approved by the U.S. school at which the student is enrolled, is also eligible for this entitlement. Approved command-sponsored student dependents are authorized one annual government funded round-trip travel at any time within a fiscal year Oct. 1 through Sept. 30, between the OCONUS PDS and the student’s school. If travel crosses the fiscal year (e.g., the student leaves in August for school and returns after Oct. 1), one-way tickets should be purchased to account for each fiscal year. The student dependent travel orders will state the direct route between the OCONUS PDS and school, as this is all that

is authorized and funded. Additionally, it is mandatory to make all official travel arrangements through the Commercial Travel Office, Sato Travel. If this policy is violated and tickets are not purchased through Sato Travel, reimbursement is limited to what the government would have paid for the airfare. Use of a non-U.S. air carrier must be approved by the traffic management office prior to traveling, or travel will not be reimbursed. For details regarding this entitlement, reference the JTR, Chapter 7, Part C at http://www.defensetravel. dod.mil/site/travelreg.cfm. Additional information and questions can be answered by the commander’s support staff, 86th Force Support Squadron Military Personnel Element, Sato Travel and the 86th Comptroller Squadron Financial Services Office.

EAS equipment arrives in Europe through Belgian port by 21st Theater Sustainment Command Public Affairs Office

M

embers of the 16th Sustainment Brigade and 21st Theater Sustainment Command, along with other U.S. and Belgian agencies, coordinated and offloaded additional European Activity Set vehicles and equipment April 24 at the port of Antwerp, Belgium. Included in the shipment were multiple M1 Abrams tanks, M2 Bradley Infantry Fighting Vehicles and numerous other equipment that will help rotational forces complete their training and mission requirements during their time in Europe. Completing movements, such as the one in Antwerp, requires the coordination of multiple agencies such as the 21st TSC, 16th Sust. Bde., Belgian army, Belgian port directors, Surface Deployment and Distribution Command, and private contracting. “There’s a lot of coordination involved in this movement,” said Maj. Brandon Wilkins, the 21st

TSC’s Support Operations, Transportation Integration Branch Sea officer in charge. “If you can keep that synchronization going, it all comes together.” The movement to Antwerp and onward to its final destination at Coleman Barracks, has not been without its challenges. “This has been different because it’s the first time we’ve used Antwerp for a mission like this,” Wilkins said. “We were a little unfamiliar at first, and there had been a lot of last minute preparation to make this happen. “It’s all come together though,” he continued. “The equipment has arrived, and it’ll move on to its next destination soon.” For the Soldiers involved, the operation was a great opportunity to test their skills doing a job that not many in the military get to experience. “I love port operations and especially being a part of the whole planning process,” said 1st Lt. Deniece Tukaufu, a mobility officer with the 16th Sust. Bde. “It’s not just about receiving the equipment and making sure the serial num-

bers are correct, but also scheduling the onward movement of the equipment.” Tukaufu’s team, along with the Belgian army, is also responsible for providing security and eyes on the equipment held at the port

until it can be loaded onto a barge and moved forward. According to U.S. Army Europe, the prepositioning of vehicles and equipment in Europe will allow the Army to save time, money and resources by rotating

personnel into theater rather than shipping large equipment back and forth across the ocean. It also allows the Army to be more flexible and responsive in meeting the needs of combatant commanders in the region.

LRMC rocks safety assessment by Chuck Roberts Landstuhl Regional Medical Center Public Affairs The Landstuhl Regional Medical Center is the first Army medical center to be recommended as an Army Safety and Occupational Health Star site. After a weeklong assessment, Army Safety and Health Management System inspectors included “LRMC Rocks ASHMS” among several hospital accolades at its outbrief, April 24. According to inspector comments, “it is absolutely evident that this site has worked tirelessly to implement the elements of a safety management system. Mr. (Harry) Raith (LRMC safety manager) and the entire team at Landstuhl are top-notch and their efforts are evident throughout the organization.”

Security Manager Harry Raith (left), receives a coin of excellence from Army Safety and Health Management System Team Leader Donald Graham.

The goal of ASHMS, implemented by Army Medical Command in 2012, is to instill a safe culture involving all hospital employees. It’s based on the Occupational Safety

and Health Administration Voluntary Protection Program — an initiative that encourages private industry and federal agencies to prevent workplace injuries and illnesses through

hazard prevention and control, work site analysis, training and cooperation between management and workers. Organizations that reach Star status experience a significant decrease in occupational mishaps, illness and incident rates. The average Star organization has injury rates that are 52 percent below their industry average. Employee involvement was highlighted by ASHMS inspectors, to include LRMC Commander Judith Lee and a “stellar housekeeping staff in all hospital areas.” During an ASHMS Pep Rally, leader involvement by Lee was described as “remarkable” and “outstanding” for the manner in which she “rallied the troops,” when Lee led the Seattle Sea Gals during a cheer she created in support of staff preparation for the ASHMS assessment.

Other highlights noted by the assessment team included an “ability to overcome multicultural and linguistic barriers … thorough operation and execution of the emergency response plan,” and “creativity of training methods to engage employees” such as creating ASHMS versions of “Family Feud” and “Jeopardy.” In addition to Lee and Raith, other LRMC staffers that were highlighted include Staff Sgt. Michael Foglio, Chief Warrant Officer 3 Jorge Maganacortez, Capt. Diego Rincon, Andrew Mackinnon, Col. Todd Williams and Safety Specialist Henny Moll. “The entire staff worked extremely hard to achieve this great feat,” Moll said. “Everyone deserves huge thanks for all of their great ideas and initiatives. Be very proud, and just keep up the momentum.”

he day of an Army cook begins long before most other Soldiers wake up for morning physical readiness training. When others are just opening their eyes to begin the day, the food service specialists have already put in hours of work over hot stoves to make each meal the best it can be. The Clock Tower Cafe dining facility and the 21st Theater Sustainment Command food service specialists that work at the cafe were judged by a U.S. Army Europe panel as part of the annual Philip A. Connelly Awards Program April 29, on Kleber Kaserne. The Connelly Award was

established March 23, 1968, to recognize excellence in Army food service and to build a competitive spirit among food service Soldiers. Each dining facility is judged based on whether the Soldiers are following the proper Army Recipe Card system: appropriate dining facility management; properly stored and prepared food; and meal quality and diner acceptability. The dining facility is judged on the preparation and service of one meal, said Chief Warrant Officer 5 James D. Donaldson, the USAREUR command food advisor. “This competition allows the Army to bring light and praise to the food service community,” Donaldson said. “The competition is ultimately designed to improve food service, create competitiveness in the Soldiers and make the dining experience better for the customer, our Soldiers.”

unday is Mother’s Day and in many countries, children pamper their mothers by making breakfast, giving flowers, cards and gifts. They also tend to be on their best behavior the entire day. The zoo in KaiserslauternSiegelbach invites all mothers for a free day at the zoo. All mothers receive a coupon for free coffee and cake at the zoo’s restaurant. The history of Mother’s Day dates back to 1907, when Anne Jarvis from Philadelphia, had the idea to choose a day to thank mothers from all over the world for their love and unselfish care, exactly one year after her mother died. One year later, Jarvis’ idea became real — on May 10, 1908, Philadelphia became known as the first town in the world to celebrate Mother’s Day. Six years later, President Woodrow Wilson officially proclaimed the second

Sunday in May as Mother’s Day. In the following years, Mother’s Day became popular in India, China, Mexico, Scandinavia, England and Switzerland. The first Mother’s Day in Germany was celebrated in 1933. Before Mother’s Day was acknowledged in Germany, mothers were not honored for their devoted work, but they were rewarded for all of the children they had. In 1938, Adolf Hitler awarded mothers

with the “mother’s cross” to honor their outstanding help against low birth rates and death. Each year in August on the birthday of Hitler’s mother, he gave the bronze medal to mothers with four children, the silver medal to mothers with six children and the gold medal to mothers with eight children. After the war, it took some time until Germans began to celebrate Mother’s Day again.

facility management questions at each stage of preparation to ensure all proper procedures were followed. “I know we did well because we have some of the best Soldiers working in this dining facility,” said Spc. Myles F. Gooden, a food service specialist assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 30th Medical Brigade, 21st TSC. “Connelly is a great chance for all of us to know how well we are doing, to compete against our fellow cooks and to help us improve our service.” The Clock Tower Cafe is the first of multiple facilities to be graded by USAREUR. Once a winner is decided, that dining facility will put together a packet to compete at the Department of the Army level. The cafe staff is confident and hopeful they will be victorious. “Today we did excellent, and this staff always does an excellent job,” said Staff Sgt. Kendrick B. Wilson, a food service noncommissioned officer assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 21st Special Troops Battalion, 21st TSC. “Winning this competition will not only show us that we are the best, but it gives us bragging rights and sets us apart from the other facilities in Europe.”

Ramstein-Miesenbach participates in the 2014 Neuwied state fair parade with a float to demonstrate that they will be the host this year.

Courtesy of City of Ramstein-Miesenbach The 32nd Rheinland-Pfalz State Fair will take place June 26 to 28 in RamsteinMiesenbach. Cities and union communities of RheinlandPfalz, charity organizations, as well as military forces, will participate in the fair to demonstrate who they are and what they have to offer. Entertaining programs with live music, dance performances, presentations and displays will be offered in 25 event areas in the center of town.

A parade with about 2,500 participants will take place June 28. “Ramstein-Miesenbach is one of the smaller organizing towns of the state fair, but hospitality is tradition here,” said Malu Dreyer, minister president of Rheinland-Pfalz. “The friendship and neighborhood with the U.S. military forces and their families is a key aspect of the event.” The minister president also mentioned that the relationship between Germans and Americans has been growing

for decades and forms their everyday life. Members of the U.S. Air Force will host a reception and take part in the event. “The state fair will be the highlight of Ramstein’s 800th anniversary,” said Klaus Layes, mayor of Ramstein-Miesenbach. “If the weather is nice, we expect about 150,000 visitors.” Additional trains and buses will be available to transport visitors. For more information on the state fair, visit www.rlp-tag.de or www.ramstein-2015.de.

hursday, Germans observe a religious holiday, “Christi Himmelfahrt,” or Ascension Day. It is a legal holiday throughout Germany, which means stores, public offices and banks are closed. In addition to celebrating this religious holiday, Germans also recognize Father’s Day on Ascension Day. It is an additional day for families to enjoy time off and do something together. They go on bike trips, hikes or gather for barbecues. For years, it was customary for men, young and old, to get together and have fun. They met for long walks, and to quench their thirst, they carried around a decorated handcart filled with beer cases or kegs. Partially, the origin of this day dates back to the German forefathers who walked through their land and fields in the springtime and asked the gods for a fertile year. Afterwards they had a drink together. Since Ascension Day is an official holiday in Germany, several communities celebrate fests for the whole family. The Hauptstuhl Music Association will present a Father’s Day rock concert at 8 p.m. Wednesday at the local fest grounds near the forest. Celebrations will continue with a barbecue at 11 a.m. on Thursday. The Kolping Family will sponsor a family day starting 11 a.m. Thursday at the Grillhütte Zillertal (barbecue

Local warriors compete in ‘Amazing Race’

Spc. Aaron Wilson places the ball while teammates Brittany Kelly and Viah Ngwyen hold the slingshot in the target shooting section of the “Amazing Race.”

by Franics Salas Warrior Transition Battalion Family Readiness Support Assistant Even the projected rain and snow forecast for April 29 in Garmisch could not dampen the dedication and enthusiasm that evolved into the 3rd Annual All Things Garmisch Amazing Race for the Warrior Transition Battalion-Europe. With six months of planning behind the event, no one could predict the beautiful weather that complemented the eight competitive teams’ energy. Nearly 200 local volunteers, including children from the surrounding schools, and the mayor of Garmisch, opened the beginning of the race at the historic ski stadium, with a welcome worthy of the Olympics

USAG cross country 10 miler

Are you a long distance runner or practicing for a marathon? The USAG Rheinland-Pfalz Cross Country Invitational 10 miler will be held on May 16. Registration for the run is from 9 to 10:15 a.m. on Rhine Ordnance Barracks, Bldg. 370. The run begins at 10:30 a.m. T-shirts will be given to the first 50 runners to register. Awards will also be given to first, second and third place men and women finishers. Entry fee: $5. Open to all ID cardholders, ages 15 and older. For details, call 493-2086 or 0631-3406-2086.

Unit Level Softball sign-ups

It is time for Unit Level Softball season. All units wishing to participate must register no later than

itself, to the warriors, their families and accompanying staff. The day was filled with challenges that came in all sizes and lengths of mental and physical competition. When successfully completed, the next clue would take them to another stop on their journey through Garmisch and Partenkirchen. Brittany Kelly, Alpha Company Social Services assistant in Kaiserslautern, was competing alongside the warriors that she works with every day and helps assist with their transition. “The race was an amazing experience,” Kelly said. “The variety of challenges gave each soldier a chance to show off their strengths and still build cohesion amongst other warriors from other locations of Germany. It was an honor to support

them in this event.” Even though not all the teams could win, participants took back something more important than a trophy from the race — particularly Spc. Aaron Wilson, a warrior in the Kaiserslautern platoon. “My wife has never competed in any event this size before. We got closer by doing the race together. It was so much fun; it took my thoughts away from the pain in my knee,” Wilson said. Through hard work and planning from Julie Monroe, Military Adaptive Site Sports and Reconditioning site coordinator and designated staff in the WTB-E, Wounded Warrior Project, American Red Cross, All Things Garmisch and countless local volunteers, this years “Amazing Race” was the most successful one yet.

May 27. To register or for details, call Quinton Floyd at 493-2087 or 0631-3406-2087, or email quinton.floyd.civ@mail.mil. Open to all ID cardholders within USAG Rheinland-Pfalz.

Take an Outdoor Break in Mehlinger Heide Who isn’t familiar with being exhausted, running on low and getting caught up in the rat race? You probably feel like you just need room to exhale and breathe easily again. Could there be a better place to do so than an oasis of pure nature? I’ve got just the insider’s tip for you. Head outdoors to Mehlingen Heath (known in German as Mehlinger Heide) to take a break from the everyday grind. Mehlinger Heide (Mehlingen Heath) is one of the biggest heath areas in the South of Germany and a natural reserve of pure beauty. I often take my dogs here for a long walk. You can easily spend a whole day there alone or together with the family. There’s a lot to see and marvel as well as take a walk on one of the many footpaths. One of the best things about this peaceful and quiet place is that it is not overrun by tourists.

The history

In the past the heath was used as a training ground for tanks of the French army with no trespassing allowed. It was not until 2001 that it was turned into a natural reserve. The most attractive time to go there is in late summer when the heath is in full bloom. You will be reminded how miraculous nature can be. Ironically enough, the heath as it exists today is not a work of nature itself but instead owed to human action. If it weren’t for men clearing the woods, the area would not be distinguishable from the woodlands around it. Another ironic fact is that, against all expectations, it is not humans who take care of the heath, but dutiful animals have taken over this job. Goats and sheep make sure that the natural area is retained the way it is.

What’s there

Countless species of animals and plants find their natural habitat in the heath. The natural

conditions give way to unique biodiversity, because the landscape bears various facets of vegetation including bushes, grass, sands, shrubbery and heather as well as trees and woods. All these different features are spacially united at Mehlingen heath. Endangered plants and animals, such as wild bees or endangered birds, have settled here. Even a plant that had been declared extinct in Palatinate, the so-called Wiesen-Leinblatt, has been rediscovered at Mehlinger Heide. A special bird that can be found here is called Ziegenmelker, which means goat milker. If you listen carefully, you can hear its special purring song.

open-air classroom with benches of trunks and tables of stone. Wouldn’t this just be a playful way of learning, surrounded by nature and with the sound of birds all around you? If you’re looking for a nice weekend activity alone or with the whole family, you should give it a try. At least my dogs seem to like the heath for it’s numerous possiblities to walk and frolic around. Exhausted and happy, they collapse into their dog baskets after we get home, dreaming of the excursion.

How to get there

By car Mehlinger Heide is approximately 20 minutes northeast of Kaiserslautern, 1 hour and 20 minutes south of Wiesbaden and 2 hours northwest of Stuttgart.

Family area

Mehlinger Heide is situated in the areas of Baalborn, Neunkirchen and Mehlingen. The communities involved have done a lot to turn the heath into a holiday area for the whole family. Information panels have been placed at the side of the paths, from which you can learn interesting things about plants and animals as well as the history of the heath itself. Children can also let off steam in the heart of nature at the heath’s adventure playground. You can take in breathtaking views of the heath at a location point called Feldherrenhügel.

Hike, relax and learn

Do you want to hike or just go for a long, relaxing walk? Then you should try out the 3.5 kilometer circular track. Watch for the owl symbol at the side of the way. It helps you find your way and not to miss anything interesting! Along the path, there’s much to discover and learn. One highlight for me is the ‘Green Classroom,’ an
