Team Ramstein tests readiness with Wing Thunder 16-03 Story and photo by Staff Sgt. Leslie Keopka 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Team Ramstein participated in a base-wide inspection from April 17 to 27. Wing Thunder 16-03 tested operational readiness and communication skills amongst several units on Kaiserslautern Military Community installations. There was a simulated missile attack scenario, April 26, which involved several first responders, such as the fire department, security forces, explosive ordnance disposal team and medical personnel. “This exercise tested preparation and response actions we haven’t used in a long time,” said Brig. Gen. Jon T. Thomas, 86th Airlift Wing commander. “We intentionally developed a unique situation to better test the adaptability and responsiveness of our Airmen.” Inspections and exercises are a way for military units and personnel to ensure they are prepared for any realworld scenario. “The overall goal of Wing Thunder 16-03 was to increase installation pre-

Air expo reinforces camaraderie among multiple nations MARRAKECH, Morocco — The roar of aircraft engines, the coagulation of people’s voices through the crowd and the sound of an announcer over a loud speaker filled the air during this year’s Marrakech Air Show April 27 to 30 in Marrakech, Morocco. The U.S. and Moroccan forces along with 54 other countries joined together during the fourday air expo in hopes of increasing positive relations, enjoying the camaraderie between one another through their passion of flight, and viewing some of the newest aeronautical technologies that the world has to offer. During this year’s expo, several flying and static air-

craft were presented. U.S. participation included U.S. military aircraft and crew stationed in England and Germany. A KC-135 Stratotanker from the 100th Air Refueling Wing and a C-130J Super Hercules from the 86th Airlift Wing were displayed for guests to view from a static location. The presence of these aircraft at the show promoted strong ties between the Moroccan government and the United States, as well as increased their future interoperability efforts. In the past, Morocco has welcomingly encouraged aviation companies to cohesively work with their nation as a strategic location within the region of Africa. The U.S. aerospace industry specifically has invested in Morocco and Boeing’s joint-venture production facility known as Morocco Aero-Technical Interconnect Systems, which employs more than

We believe they are one of the strongest in the region, and we work with them to make sure that they continue to be a forward-leaning, best-in-practices air force,” said Dwight Bush, U.S. ambassador to Morocco. Several U.S. companies and government agencies have participated in the Marrakech Air Show each year since 2008 and have witnessed the growth of the expo after each year’s passing. “The U.S. has participated since the first air show in 2008. Facing unknown: Beginning of my AF journey

COMMENTARY

by Airman 1st Class Joshua Magbanua 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs

A combination of excitement and nervousness overwhelmed me as my wife and I boarded our flight to my first duty station, Ramstein. I didn’t know what to expect as I began this new chapter of my life as a photojournalist in the U.S. Air Force. The Air Force is very new to me and so was the job I was preparing to take on. I was not worried only for myself but also for my wife, who was leaving behind her job back home. What was I going to do for her in Germany? I didn’t want her to be stuck at home all day. Whatever shadows of anxiety I had were soon eclipsed by my anticipation of beginning my exciting new career. I cannot count how many people have told me I was lucky to have Ramstein as my first duty location and public affairs as my job. Tired and sore from the hours of waiting at the airport, I was dead asleep soon after the plane hit cruising altitude. The

as required in a real-world situation. “We continuously strive to become better at our processes and to improve our training,” Thomas said. “Team Ramstein continues to prepare themselves with the knowledge and equipment to address any situation and have the ability to respond rapidly to meet any challenge we’re given.” The 10-day inspection included functions such as loading cargo on and deploying multiple C-130J Super Hercules aircraft, prepping Airmen with individual protective

only things I remember waking up for were the flight attendants serving dinner and the public address system informing us we were about to land at Ramstein. I opened the window cover to get my first glimpse of Germany. Golden rays of sunshine illuminated the treetops of the many emerald forests that carpeted the German landscape. I saw quaint little villages that made me think of fairy tales like Hansel and Gretel. After disembarking the aircraft and collecting our luggage, we exited the terminal where we were greeted by my sponsor. The next day we visited what would be my office for the next several years. We were greeted by smiling faces that told me everything would be all right and I had nothing to be afraid of. Suddenly, all fears and worries of being the new guy faded away. I was soon informed that I was scheduled to attend the First Term Airman Center for a week. FTAC is where first-term Airmen go to receive briefings about the policies of the base

equipment, setting up a predeployment line to process personnel and several other base-wide entities. “One of the best outcomes in any exercise is to watch the men and women of the installation work together, be it from first responders, to Post Attack Reconnaissance (PAR) teams conducting facility and personnel checks, to the Crisis Action Team and Emergency Operations Center working in cohesion to bring the exercise to a successful conclusion,” Dockter said. “You can bet that the installation will exercise this scenario again with an eye to execute even better than we did this time.” including insert or supplements, does not constitute endorsement by the DOD, the Department of the Air Force or the AdvantiPro GmbH of the products or the services advertised. and receive an introduction to the Air Force. When I walked into the classroom on the first day, the room was full of people, but no one made a sound. A cold, dead silence filled the air. Were the people shy and unsociable, or were they just upset at having to rise before the sun did? Either way, I was on edge. Suddenly, the door flung open and our FTAC facilitators walked in. They had a bright and shiny demeanor, which reminded me of camp counselors. Soon the ice was broken and everyone opened up. We learned about the many programs, activities and organizations within Ramstein. It was as if a brand new world of opportunities opened up to me. I was also delighted to discover opportunities not just for myself but also for my wife. Because of FTAC, my wife and I were given wonderful ideas on what we could do here. Besides volunteer and travel opportunities, I learned about how to be a resilient and disciplined Airman. The briefers taught us how to incorporate the Air Force’s core values of integrity first, service before self and excellence in

all we do into every aspect of our lives. I now feel more prepared to take on my career. About halfway through FTAC, I was notified that I was selected to be on the Facility Excellence Team for two weeks. FET is a program in which first-term Airmen go around Ramstein and beautify the base. I honestly had a good time at FET. I worked with some of the people I met at FTAC, and we learned how to work together as a team while serving the community. It was also a chance to network with Airmen from different career fields. I look back now at where I was a month ago, a brand new Airman facing an unfamiliar world. I had worries, and I even had some fears. However, I learned not to be bound by fear. When we gather our courage and step out to the unknown, the world and all its possibilities open up to us. Looking forward, I hope to do a lot of great things for the Air Force. For now, they are just dreams. But why not dream? After all, there is nothing to be afraid of; I learned this lesson during my first 30 days at Ramstein.

new technologies in aerospace and also the service and technology that support the Moroccan air force and also our air services throughout the region,” Bush said. Air shows and expos bring together everyone from aircraft enthusiasts and aeronautical developers to the common spectator. No matter the reason, visitors can be assured of one thing: It will be a memorable event. “The most important thing about the air show is that it reinforces the commitment we have to Morocco,” said Gen. Frank Gorenc, U.S. Air Forces in Europe and Air Forces Africa commander. “We are a nation that goes and seeks out coalition partners. If we can continually, every day, work on that interoperability, when the time comes and our countries decide that we are going to use military force in support of our goals, we are able to do that in the most effective way.” The U.S. is committed to assisting Morocco and other African nations in their effort to maintain a secure, stable and safe Africa. These types of air expos create a unique opportunity for the U.S. to work with its many African partners in achieving those goals.

Frankfurt USO closes

The USO permanently closed its center at the Frankfurt International Airport due to several operational factors. Over the past three years, the center has seen a decline in the number of visitors using the facility as a result of the shift of arriving military personnel and their families from Frankfurt to Ramstein. The location now primarily serves as a spot for visitors to wait for commercial shuttles to local installations. Additionally, force protection and security concerns coupled with limited and costly options to reduce risk contributed to the decision.

Chalking up our anxiety, separated from family Story and photo by Airman 1st Class Lane Plummer 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Azmeralda Poole pushes the chalk down on the ground and draws two dots inside a circle, cracking a grin as she sketches a smiling face. She points to her creation as she looks up at Nicole Flores, her Vogelweh Elementary School counselor. “This is me. I’m happy right now!” Azmeralda says. Flores smiles and consoles the young girl as she participates in a therapy session conducted for the children who were evacuated out of Turkey during an approved order from the Department of Defense. Flores had them draw out their thoughts and feelings, and for Azmeralda, there were a lot. “I had to leave Dad alone for a while,” Azmeralda said. “In the middle of the night, Mom and I came over to Germany, and I knew nobody here. Some of my friends came with me to Germany, but a lot of them left to America.” As Azmeralda said, some were moved here, but some went back stateside. According to Flores, it’s been an eventful first few weeks, as she and other school staff members have been coming to help the dozens of families getting settled in. “We got a call out of the blue. … We ended up with 65 kids from Turkey,” Flores said. “It happened so fast, but we’ve kept our minds and arms open

to these kids the entire way.” Despite the large influx of over 60 students, the teachers have had no problem taking more of them. If anything, according to Flores, the response has been incredible. “A lot of teachers wanted as many students as possible,” Flores explained. “Also, we have a program where these students have sponsors in the school that show them around and get them adjusted to the new environment. They become their new best friends, and they start feeling like they’ve been here all year.” It has not been an easy time for these kids and their parents, accord-

ing to Flores. However, they’ve never been alone. The parents were provided sponsors to help them settle into the community and become comfortable, and their children were also given sponsors in the form of their peers. Although they have had so many changes in their lives in such a short amount of time, many of them are still smiling and brightening the classrooms. “These kids are so spectacular,” Flores said. “To see them getting along so well with students that have lived here, it’s amazing.” As the kids’ next classes are looming, Flores rounds up the students.

She takes a glance at the drawings across the playground. Smiley faces and frowning faces crowded the small playground turf. One scribbled face expressed a look of uncertainty with the word “meh” chalked above its head. Flores looks down at the students’ faces. One girl had a doll, with a photo of her dad’s face on the head, clenched tightly in her hands. “Did we get our emotions out today?” Flores asked her students, being met with a crowd of nodding heads. “I know you all miss your moms or dads, but I want you all to leave your emotions here on this playground, kids,” Flores said. “I want all the sadness, confusion and unhappiness to stay here, chalked in the ground.” The only emotion she wants them to carry with them to their next home is their happiness and positivity. Flores will only spend two more months with the students, as they and the parents will return stateside once the kids finish their school year. “I’m going to miss these kids when they leave,” Flores admitted. “They’re part of our family now.” Whether they were drawing happy faces or stacking cups, these thirdgrade students were united with the community and built friendships at their elementary school. Although they’ll only be here for two months to finish the school year, they’ll have friends and teachers that will remember them for years.

Keep your travel options varied with Space-A Story and photo by Airman 1st Class Lane Plummer 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs For most Airmen, coordinating travel arrangements is the most stressful part of a vacation. The time it takes to get from point A to point B and the associated costs add up to be significant stressors, so weighing your options is key to saving. One valuable option exists in the form of the space-available travel program. Space-A is a travel benefit that allows authorized passengers to occupy Department of Defense aircraft seats that are surplus after all required passengers and cargo have been accommodated. Its trav-

el is allowed on a nonmission interference basis only, and authorized personnel include uniformed service members and their dependents, DOD civilians, and retirees and their dependents, who must be accompanied by the retiree. The majority of Space-A flights are offered by air mobility command, and seats are normally free, with an exception to Patriot Express flights, the AMC’s commercial charter flights. These flights require a small tax be paid. However, space-available flights using military aircraft can take you worldwide including the U.S., Germany, England, Spain, Italy, Japan and South Korea. Of all the locations available to Space-A, however,

Ramstein stands out because of the speed of its many operations. According to Staff Sgt. Sean Cyphert, 721st Aerial Port Squadron passenger service supervisor, the pace that the base’s terminal runs at makes some aspects of Space-A difficult to use on Ramstein. “Ramstein has the busiest terminal in the 435th Air Mobility Squadron, running 33 percent of the Air Force’s entire PAX mission,” Cyphert said. “Because we are usually processing multiple flights at once, using some services, such as virtual roll call, isn’t plausible.” Because of this, Cyphert believes passengers should exercise patience when using Space-A. “We’re not a business or

212th Combat Support Hospital completes NATO evaluation Story and photo by Capt. Tonia Jordan 212th Combat Support Hospital

The 212th Combat Support Hospital successfully completed a week-long NATO evaluation April 22 that is expected to lead to the unit being the first-ever NATO-certified combat hospital. At the end of a week of detailed inspections and tests, the unit was found “fully capable” or “capable” in all areas, according to a First Impression Report prepared by Navy Capt. Kimberly Ferland, lead NATO evaluator. This FIR is the basis upon which NATO staff will officially certify the CSH. Once officially certified, the 212th CSH will become the firstever certified-NATO combat hospital, according to Lt. Col. Oscar Meijboom, course director for the NATO Medical Evaluation Course. To ensure the 212th met all NATO operational standards, evaluators from 13 partner nations — Belgium, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Canada, Denmark, France, Germany, Hungary, the Netherlands, Slovakia, Spain, Sweden, the United Kingdom and the United States — along with a member from the Supreme Hedquarters Allied Powers Europe Medical Branch conducted an evaluation of all hospital operations. Many partner nations have had the Military Medical Center of Excellence send medical evaluators to their facilities to do evaluations in order to determine what standards need to be improved to become certified to NATO standards. But until now, no other medical facility has ever gone through a full NATO-certification evaluation that looked at their medical

facility as a whole. Approximately one year ago, the 212th CSH asked NATO to provide a courtesy evaluation. After the evaluation was presented to the CSH commander for review, the deficiencies were noted as well as notable items for sustainment. Since that initial evaluation, the CSH has been going line by line improving upon the recommendations. “How exciting is it to be part of the 212th CSH going through this NATO Medical Evaluation?” Command Sgt. Maj. Joseph Stewart, 212th CSH senior enlisted leader, asked rhetorically. “Soldiers of the 212th can show the NATO evaluators their skills, hard work and training involved in this long preparation.” After weeks of setting up the 32-bed hospital, the Soldiers are eager to demonstrate their medical skills, according to Stewart, who was confident early in the evaluation that the unit would be successful.

“This week will culminate with the hopes that the 212th Combat Support Hospital becomes the first-ever field hospital to get the NATO certification,” Stewart said. One of the most critical pieces of being a NATO-certified facility is ensuring that NATO standardization agreements for procedures and systems and equipment components, known as STANAGs, are developed and put into operation within one’s facility. Being able to “speak NATO” is mission-critical when the CSH has multinational medical personnel working in their facility. The STANAGs ensures the policies and procedures are fluent throughout NATO and provides clear guidance regardless of the facility. Now, all policy and procedures of the 212th CSH are in sync with NATO STANAGs. During the evaluation Soldiers from all levels were asked questions relating to administrative processes, support activities and

patient-care protocols. “This process demonstrates what we already do in a deployed environment,” said Maj. Michael Gray, officer in charge of Intermediate Care Ward I. “Now we have to show that it is in compliance with NATO standards ensuring positive patient outcomes with our allied nations.” This certification would not only strengthen the bond with NATO forces, but improve the 212th CSHs interoperability. The 212th is very familiar with working side by side with allied partners during multiple field exercises such as MEDRETE 15, Trident Juncture, Southern Accord and JORVIK LOOK. Continued multinational exercises will only improve the strong relationship the 212th CSH has with NATO partners and allies. “I believe that the NATO Medical Certification will demonstrate to our partner nations that the 212th Combat Support Hospital’s skill and expertise in providing world-class health care to our partner nations is in concert with NATO standards,” said Maj. Paul Masters, EMT OIC. Col. Brian D. Almquist, 212th Combat Support Hospital commander, will continue to build on the U.S. Army Europe Strong Europe concept by creating beneficial opportunities that will improve the interoperability with NATO partners and allies. With this NATO certification, the 212th CSH will be in line with the SHAPE Medical Directorate providing top-quality medical care within the framework of the multinational military medical health care services in deployed operations contributing to the success of NATO allies and partners.

Regional symposium features world-renowned religious scholar by Sgt. Maj. Michael Pintagro 21st Theater Sustainment Command Public Affairs A world-renowned religious scholar confronted what he asserts are some of life’s most vexing questions during a symposium conducted April 28 on Vogelweh. Ravi Zacharias, a lecturer, writer and founder of an international ministry as well as a religious philosopher, explored such challenging topics as suffering, evil and life’s purpose during a presentation punctuated by rhetorical questions, anecdotes and the main speaker’s trademark wit. A captivated audience of around 450 leaders, Soldiers, Airmen, civilians and family members from locations as distant as Belgium, Stuttgart and northern Bavaria as well as the Kaiserslautern area converged at Armstrong’s Club for the symposium. Zacharias addressed similar topics in a lighter and more concise manner during the National Prayer

Breakfast held that morning at the Ramstein Officers’ Club. More than 300 enthusiastic participants enjoyed spiritual and culinary fare during the annual community event. The symposium featured half-hour presentations by Zacharias and Christian Hofreiter, director of Zacharias’ ministry organization and a research fellow at Oxford University. A lively question-and-answer session facilitated by Lt. Col. R. Randall Thomas, 21st Theater Sustainment Command deputy chaplain and key event organizer, followed the presentations. Both speakers directly addressed arguments against the existence of God, purpose and transcendent meaning lodged by such prominent philosophers as David Hume and Friedrich Nietzsche as well as current scholars like Richard Dawkins, who is influential in contemporary popular culture. Noting the problem of pain and suffering is a bottom-line question that transcends philosophies and cultures, Zacharias discussed the emotional and spiritual as well as the physical toll they impose. He also

observed that these questions loom particularly large for Soldiers, who confront evil, pain and suffering in powerful and intimate ways. On the topic of outrage over the evils of the world, Zacharias offered a colorful anecdote that suggested an inherent standard of goodness and perfection that refutes nihilism. And paradoxically, meaningless, according to Zacharias, results more often from pursuit of pleasure for its own sake than from pain. Suffering, he noted, frequently yields reflection, understanding, spiritual growth and faith. Comparing life to a drama, he also observed that knowing the author and the story line can offer useful context to life’s agonies. Hofreiter addressed similar themes, acknowledging the daunting challenges posed by pain and suffering but emphasizing the importance of freedom and redemptive love. “Love cannot be compelled,” Hofreiter said. “It See SYMPOSIUM, Page 11

Regiment instructor writer, it has been well worth it. “Me and my entire family have travelled through Space-A three times now,” Pacheco said. “We’ve managed to save thousands of dollars.” When it comes to travelling, there are many ways to get around the world. For those willing to be flexible with their transportation, Space-A can provide an easy and very cheap solution to travelling woes. There are three ways of registering your name in the Space-A system. The first two are visiting the Ramstein Passenger Terminal’s service desk or calling 479-4440. The third option is to register online. It is important to note, active duty service members must ensure they are signed out on leave before signing up for Space-A. To sign up for Space-A online, follow these instructions: 1) Visit www.ramstein.af.mil/units/ramsteinabpassengerterminal and click the “Space Available Sign Up” link. 2) Input your information per the template provided in the email that pops up then send it to the address that has been automatically filled into the email. 3) You are responsible for tracking which flights come in. You can do this by calling the PAX or by visiting their Facebook page, which provide the arrival dates for inbound flights as well as a 72-hour departure schedule for outbound ones. 4) Passengers must attend roll call at PAX three and a half hours prior to departure. When it comes to scheduling your vacations, planning travel is just as important as it is stressful. Having a wide venue of options can help this process, and Space-A is a money saving option available for members within the KMC. must be freely offered.” Freedom and love, Hofreiter observed, require choice and therefore the possibilities of error, evil and pain. Col. Scott Hammond, TSC command chaplain, concluded the event with reflections and an invitation to prayer. Dozens of participants remained into the evening to pray and meet with chaplains and the speakers. Participants, an impressive group in their own right ranging from aspiring ministers to high school students to curious officers, Airmen and Soldiers, praised Zacharias for confronting life’s deepest dilemmas. “He doesn’t dodge tough questions, like the question of suffering,” said 1st Lt. Spencer Bolduc, executive officer of the 635th Movement Control Team, 39th Transportation Company, part of the TSC’s 16th Sustainment Brigade. “As Soldiers, we deal with a lot of pain. But he helps us to understand the pain is there for a reason. As we heard from the speakers tonight, the pain can be a gateway to purpose and

meaning; those experiencing pain are often the ones who open their hearts to meaning.” Some emphasized the force of Zacharias’ intellectual arguments and ability to explain those things that they consider life’s deepest dilemmas. “I really enjoyed it because he brings the mind and heart together,” said Pfc. Muhota Mbuthia, a dental assistant who serves at the Landstuhl Regional Medical Center clinic. “He played a big role in my journey as a Christian. He unites science and soul. Hearing him talk about the problem of evil was especially powerful.” Zacharias said he appreciates the opportunity to engage military audiences. “We are delighted to be part of this setting and to minister to their deep questions,” Zacharias said after the symposium. Noting these are difficult times to be in the armed forces, the India native expressed hope he and colleagues could provide Soldiers and Airmen “answers that will be meaningful and encourage them in their faith.”

Ask an attorney: Tax tips for retirees by Stephen Smith 21st Theater Sustainment Command Office of the Staff Judge Advocate Q: I’m a U.S. citizen who has been retired here in Germany for the last decade, and I haven’t filed a U.S. tax return since 2006. Am I in trouble with the IRS? A: U.S. citizens and resident aliens, or green card holders, have an obligation to file a U.S. tax return every year, as long as they meet the minimum income threshold outlined at the beginning of the instructions to Form 1040. Most other countries tax you based on residency, not citizenship. If a Frenchman lives and works in Germany, he has to file a German tax return, not a French one. But Americans who retire overseas usually wind up having to file a return in the country where they reside and an American return because of their U.S. citizenship or resident alien status. If you are a chronic nonfiler, sooner or later the IRS

will likely catch you, especially if you are receiving a 1099-R from Defense Finance and Accounting Services every year listing your pension income. The IRS computers will eventually notice that no return was ever filed bearing the Social Security number that appears on the 1099-R, and the IRS will track you down. You may not wind up in jail for tax evasion, but you will be hit with a variety of penalties plus interest on any amount of back tax you owe. It is almost always better to “come in from the cold” voluntarily. You can usually get right with the Government by filing tax returns for the last six years. Our tax assistance centers can prepare those returns for you. All you have to do is bring us the supporting documents. The odds of the IRS catching chronic nonfilers who reside overseas have increased since the Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act was passed a few years ago. Beginning on Jan. 1, 2015, FATCA required

foreign banks that have American account holders to report interest paid on those accounts to the IRS on Form 1099-INT. Under the GermanAmerican Tax Treaty, American retirees who are ordinary residents of Germany must continue to pay tax to the U.S. on military and other governmental pensions, but they are exempt from having to pay tax on their Social Security benefits. Germany has the primary right to tax those benefits, and you should include them on your German tax return. You must still report the amount of Social Security you received on line 20a of your Form 1040, but on line 20b you should write “Exempt” and attach Form 8833 to your return explaining why you are exempt. Our tax center personnel have been trained on how to do this. The situation is different for American military retirees who are not ordinary residents of Germany but who are stationed here under the NATO Status of

Forces Agreement. They pay taxes on their military pensions to the U.S., and their Social Security benefits are also taxable by the U.S., not Germany. A lot of Americans buy homes overseas and wind up renting them out. It comes as a big shock to some of them when they discover they must report that rental income on their American tax return. Many just assume that because the home is outside the U.S., they don’t have to report it on their U.S. tax returns. Others assume that because they are Americans, they don’t have to report that rental income to the German government either. You should never assume anything when it comes to taxes. Likewise, many Americans living overseas have no idea they are required to file a Foreign Bank Account Report with the Treasury Department on Financial Crimes Enforcement Network Form 114 if they had more than $10,000 in a foreign bank or financial account at any time during the previous calendar

year. If they are filing a federal tax return jointly with a foreign spouse, and that spouse, like most Europeans, likes to put money in the bank for a rainy day, that can be enough to trigger a FBAR filing requirement, whether or not the American spouse is a joint owner of the account. By electing to treat your foreign spouse as an American for tax purposes and filing jointly so you can take a higher standard deduction and a personal exemption for your spouse, you expose your spouse to the long arm of American law. This can be a trap for the unwary. There are special streamlined procedures designed to assist taxpayers who should have been filing FBARs, in addition to not filing federal income tax returns, get back into compliance. Children honor mothers Sunday by Petra Lessoing 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs

When mothers get served breakfast in bed or find a nicely set table Sunday, it’s because of Mother’s Day. In many countries of the world, the second Sunday in May is Mother’s Day and observed as an official day to honor mothers. Most children pamper their mothers, give flowers, candy and cards, and behave extremely well that day. The celebration is over 100 years old and originated in the states. In 1907, exactly one year after her mother died, Anne Jarvis from Philadelphia had the idea to pick a day to thank mothers all over the world for all their love and unselfish care. The idea became a reality one year later. As the first city in world, Philadelphia celebrated Mother’s Day on May 10, 1908. Six years later, President Woodrow Wilson officially proclaimed the second Sunday in May as Mother’s Day. In the following years, Mother’s Day became popular in India, China, Mexico, Scandinavia, England and Switzerland. The first Mother’s Day in Germany was celebrated in 1933. In the initial years in Germany, mothers were not honored for their devoted work but were rewarded for the many children they had. In 1938, Adolf Hitler awarded mothers with the “mother’s cross to honor their outstanding help against low birth rates and death. Each year in August, on the

birthday of his mother, Hitler gave the bronze medal to mothers with four children, the silver medal to mothers with six and the gold medal to mothers with eight children. After the war, it took a while for Germans to start celebrating Mother’s Day again. People still had terrible memories of the past as well as the current miserable situation on their minds; they didn’t feel like calling special attention to something that should be normal and not taken for granted. Today, families like to spend this day together. In the KMC, they might want to visit the zoo in Kaiserslautern-Siegelbach, which will sponsor a special Mother’s Day event Sunday. Mothers are admitted free and receive a coupon for coffee and cake. For more information, visit www.kl-zoo.de. Some might travel to Wolfstein, 24 kilometers north of Kaiserslautern, to experience the lime mine, which is considered a special industrial monument. Visitors should wear sturdy shoes and warm clothes, since the temperatures are about 54 degrees Fahrenheit at all times. Mothers are admitted free. Tickets cost ₏5.50 for adults and ₏4.50 for children. The family ticket is ₏14.50, cash only, no cards accepted. Opening hours are from 1 to 6 p.m. For details, visit www.kalkbergwerk.com. In Lauterecken, north of Wolfstein, Musikverein Reipoltskirchen will present an outdoor concert at 11 a.m. on Veldenzplatz. Lunch dishes will be available as well as surprises for mothers.

Steve Rogers is leading the newly formed team of Avengers in their continued efforts to safeguard humanity. But after another incident involving the Avengers results in collateral damage, political pressure mounts to install a system of accountability, headed by a governing body to oversee and direct the team. The new status quo fractures the Avengers, resulting in two camps — one led by Steve Rogers and his desire for the Avengers to remain free to defend humanity without government interference, and the other following Tony Stark’s surprising decision to support government oversight and accountability. Starring Robert Downey Jr. and Scarlett Johannson. My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2 (PG-13) Toula and Ian’s daughter, Paris, is in the process of deciding where to go to college. Though her family is pressing her to stay close, she plans on going far away to get away from them. After focusing most of their time on their daughter, Toula and Ian try to rekindle their spark. Meanwhile, a Portokalos family secret is revealed, bringing everyone back together for an even bigger, Greeker wedding. Starring Nia Vardalos and John Corbett.
