Kindertransport was an organization established to transport children and find places away from danger for them to stay. “In April of 1939, my parents took me to the railway station,” Mrs. Kirk said. “As the train passed, they frantically waved to me. Though times were difficult, the Kirks said they consider themselves fortunate for the lives they have lived. They spoke of coping with their pain and learning to live normal lives. “Basically we just had to get on with it,” Mrs. Kirk said. “I think the feeling at the time was, don’t look back. That evening, we went to stay in a flat which my mother’s best friend had left when she had immigrated to England.” The night Mrs. Kirk describes is known as Kristallnacht, or night of broken glass, when Nazis exe-

Ramstein personnel and families honored the memory of Holocaust victims during the 86th Airlift Wing’s Holocaust Remembrance April 24. As honored guests at the remembrance, Bob and Ann Kirk, Holocaust survivors, told their stories of persecution and their experience on the Kindertransport. According to the 86 AW Holocaust Remembrance Day Committee, the Holocaust was the systematic, statesponsored persecution led by Adolf Hitler and the Nazis during World War II. During the Holocaust, an estimated 11 million people were killed and many more were persecuted for their race, religion and ethnicities. As children, the Kirks escaped persecution through the Kindertransport, a series of rescue efforts which brought thousands of refugee Jewish children to Great Britain from Nazi Germany between 1938 and 1940. During their visit to Ramstein, the Kirks stepped on stage to capture Airmen, civilians and children with stories and pictures from their days of struggle. “As soon as the Nazis took power, everything changed,” Mr. Kirk said. Mr. Kirk spoke of the new regulations that began to make life for Jewish people more and more difficult and how his life at school began to change as well. “There was more bullying and my classmates were ordered not to associate with Jews,” Mr. Kirk said. “We were usually forced to sit in the back of the class and not allowed to participate in the lesson. You can imagine how much we learned this way.” The Kirks, who met at a club for young Jewish refugees and have

ter which she received from her father while she was living in Great Britain. “He said be happy, live your life to the full, always tell the truth and do not grieve,” Mrs. Kirk said. “That was June, ’42. I knew Dad wouldn’t have wanted us to be miserable, so we refused to be miserable.” After the Kirks spoke they took questions from the audience, several of whom expressed gratitude for the experience.

After the presentation, the 86 AW held a wreath laying and retreat ceremony. The wreath was tied with ribbons of different colors representing various groups who suffered during the Holocaust. Soviet prisoners of war and political dissidents. The Kirks laid the ceremonial wreath and watched as the flags were lowered, folded to the sound of the German and U.S. national anthems. As the participants left, each placed a symbolic stone within a wooden Star of David, reflecting the Jewish practice of leaving a stone to mark a visit to the gravesite of a loved one. The Jewish people also place the stones as a symbol of the lasting presence of the person’s life and memory.

May 5, 2017 Despite the suffering of so many, the Kirks do not carry a message of resentment. When asked for a lesson from his experiences, Mr. Kirk replied without hesitation. “You mustn’t ever use a broad brush to describe people,” Mr. Kirk said. “Every person is an individual with their own rights, aspirations and dignity. If you strip the dignity away, you dehumanize. That’s dangerous. I think that’s the most important message that I can give.”

Combat Comm integrates total force in USAFE-AFAFRICA Story and photo by Airman 1st Class Joshua Magbanua 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Combat communications Airmen, affectionately known as Combat Comm, marked a significant achievement for their career field April 26 on Ramstein. Airmen from active duty, Air Force reserve, and Air National Guard units conducted the first total force integrated exercise for Combat Comm in U.S. Air Forces in Europe and Air Forces Africa. “What we’re showcasing here is a proof of concept showing the Air Force leadership that active duty, guard, and reserve units can work together cohesively to execute any mission, anywhere, and anytime,” said 1st Lt. Nicholas Riascos, 1st Combat Communications Squadron mission planning and operations deputy flight commander. 1 CBCS is part of the 435th Air Ground Operations Wing, one of three wings headquartered at Ramstein. Riascos said the busy operations tempo prompted the squadron to reach out to USAFE-AFAFRICA to request assistance, especially concerning deployments and exercises. The MAJCOM provided a solution that enabled the 1 CBCS to continue accomplishing its mission without straining its resources. “A few years ago, we realized that we were overtasked, undermanned, and underequipped … in this area of responsibility for exercise and contingency deployments,” he explained. “We told them we wanted to support (the mission), but we needed help. Total force integration was the answer.” USAFE-AFAFRICA forwarded the squadron’s request to points of contact for the Air Force National Guard and Air Force Reserve, Riascos recalled. Then, Airmen from the 263rd and 55th Combat Communications Squadrons were able to join Ramstein Airmen for the exercise. Senior Master Sgt. Stephen Rhudy, senior enlisted leader for 263 CBCS Airmen, expressed thankfulness, explaining that he was happy to see his Airmen

contribute to such a significant mission. “We’re very proud that the three different units can bring up communications together,” Rhudy said. “It’s very satisfying to know that our guys can come to the table and bring some things in. It’s also a great opportunity to learn from them, so it’s a give and take.” Capt. Loring Montague, officer in charge of the 263 CBCS Airmen during the exercise, added that the training served as a chance for active duty, reserve, and guard Airmen to get used to working together, especially in preparation for various missions. “The exercise allows us to network,” Montague explained. “We are testing our abilities so we can get used to working with them and they get used to working with us. That way, when we get called out for a real-world mission, we aren’t trying to figure it out the first time.” Combat Communications Airmen help provide secure and reliable communication between units, personnel, headquarters, and even aircraft in challenging environments. They are trained to provide these solutions anywhere their equipment can survive, said Rhudy. “If we have enough support systems, we can keep our equipment operating in optimal temperatures,” he explained. “As long as it’s not too hot or too cold, we can bring communications virtually anywhere in the world.” Riascos took pride in being able to lead the first total force combat communications team in USAFE-AFAFRICA, saying he hoped they can pave the way for more integration in the future. “I’ve got a fantastic group of guys that are professional and proficient,” he said. “I’m more than thrilled to be able to lead this team out the door. They’ve shown me what they bring to the table in this exercise. The fact that they’re able to bring up their communications equipment, the fact that they’re so proficient … to me it’s already impressive and it already carries weight on its own. I know they will be able to execute it anywhere we go.”

US, Greece strengthen partnership in Stolen Cerberus IV

Two U.S. Air Force C-130J Super Hercules aircraft fly above the Greek coastline during Exercise Stolen Cerberus IV April 19 near Elefsis Air Base, Greece.

Story and photos by Senior Airman Tryphena Mayhugh 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs ELEFSIS AIR BASE, Greece — Approximately 100 Airmen and three C-130J Super Hercules aircraft from the 86th Airlift Wing’s 37th Airlift Squadron participated in a bilateral training deployment, Exercise Stolen Cerberus IV, with the Hellenic air force and U.S. Army at Elefsis, Greece, from April 18 to April 28. “I’d say it’s been wildly successful,” said Capt. Ryan Brooks, 37 AS mission commander for the exercise. “We’ve been working with our Greek partners as much as possible. We’ve done a myriad of drops and achieved a lot of training for the 37 AS as well.” Throughout the combined forces training, Greek armed forces and U.S. service members worked alongside each other and learned how each group operates. They collaborated on techniques for static-line and military free fall paratroopers, high-velocity contain-

er-delivery systems, heavy-equipment airdrops, low-cost low-altitude bundles, and sea-rescue kit drops. “The reason why we come here is to get additional training that’s not readily available at Ramstein,” said Senior Master Sgt. Christopher Minnifield, 37 AS readiness superintendent and ramp coordinator for the exercise. “Being able to come here to Greece gives us an opportunity to get that additional training to sharpen our skills.” The training mission brought U.S. and Greek military forces together to build upon and strengthen the bonds shared between the two countries, while continuing to improve interoperability as Greece and the U.S. continue to work together in operations worldwide. “Participating in this exercise is extremely important,” Brooks said. “It integrates both countries and their abilities. It increases the Greek ability to work with the U.S. as a partner and ally and provides a tactile ability they can see and feel for future operations

by allowing them to work with us face to face.” The United States and Greece, as NATO allies, share a commitment to promote peace and stability, and seek opportunities to continue developing their strong relationship. “It’s been great working with the Hellenic air force,” Brooks said. “They’re always extremely supportive, they’re here to provide us anything we need, and allow us to train to a specific mission set.” Combined exercises such as these enhance the interoperability capabilities and skills among allied and partner armed forces, and provide an opportunity for the Airmen to learn a myriad of new skills. “I think they grasp the concept of air power from this exercise,” Minnifield said. “The key to air power is flexibility. On any given day you can face challenges that could potentially delay a mission. Remaining flexible and realizing there’s a solution to any problem is the key. We need to focus on what our

job is and find ways to get it done.” The transatlantic strategic relationship between the U.S. and Europe has been forged over the past seven decades, and it is built on a foundation of shared values, experiences, and vision. “The value of relationships is basically what I’ve learned here,” Minnifield said. “The relationships you establish with Greek partners and the people you work with on a day-to-day basis, those relationships are what take you through the tough times you may face.” This is the fourth iteration in as many years of Stolen Cerberus out of Elefsis, further strengthening the U.S. and Greek partnership. “I hope we continue to come down here to get excellent training and continue this partnership with the Greeks to move forward and become better,” Brooks said. Through forward training deployment exercises held all across Europe with NATO allies, Ramstein Airmen continue to forge bonds and strengthen their skills.

37 AS Airman masters craft in Greece Story and photos by Senior Airman Tryphena Mayhugh 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs ELEFSIS AIR BASE, Greece — The rushing wind whipped around Airmen on the open ramp of a C-130J Super Hercules as the last rays of the sun glistened off the surface of the ocean and illuminated the islands sprinkled along the Greek coastline. With a sudden lurch, the C-130 banked to the right, turning the rosy scenery almost completely sideways, quickly tailed by two more in its wake. The three aircraft raced across the sky, weaving around each other while the sun slipped lazily to sleep, leaving everything dark in its wake. Senior Airman Matthew Gee, 37th Airlift Squadron loadmaster, along with approximately 110 other 37 AS Airmen, have participated in Exercise Stolen Cerberus IV at Elefsis Air Base, Greece from April 18 to 28. He and other loadmasters have worked alongside the U.S. Army and Hellenic air force to perform personnel and cargo air drops out of C-130s. “Here specifically, our big focus is working with our friends in Greece,” Gee said. “We try to strengthen our

training with them and it’s been going well.” While loadmasters are only one aspect of all the moving parts that make the exercise possible, they are an important one. “Without loadmasters, there wouldn’t be any air drops, which are a huge part of this training,” Gee said. “You can’t fly at all without one. Besides air drops, we’re constantly on the flight deck backing up the pilots, making sure airspeeds are okay, or we’ll hook up night vision goggles and look around at night as an extra set of eyes. However, the important stuff is in the back of the plane: getting these paratroopers out, dropping cargo, getting in our training and getting people qualified.” During the exercise, Gee and his coworkers will prepare C-130s to drop Greek paratroopers, heavy equipment, platforms, container delivering system bundles and low-cost low-altitude bundles. Throughout the exercise, the more experienced loadmasters trained Greek service members as well as younger loadmasters on a variety of air drops. One such qualification training Gee underwent was for LCLA bundles. Master Sgt. CJ Campbell, 37 AS loadmaster, trained Gee on how to perform the drop.

Senior Airman Matthew Gee, 37th Airlift Squadron loadmaster, prepares low-cost low-altitude cargo for an air drop while Master Sgt. CJ Campbell, 37 AS aircraft loadmaster, supervises during Exercise Stolen Cerberus IV April 19 at Elefsis Air Base, Greece. Gee, Campbell and another loadmaster worked with the Hellenic air force to set up four LCLA cargos for a drop. Combined exercises such as these enhance the interoperability capabilities and skills among allied and partner armed forces.

“The Greeks have been receptive to the training we’ve given them, as well as the young loadmasters like Gee,” Campbell said. “The LCLA training I gave him earlier this week, he was very receptive to everything I had to teach him and was able to recite everything back and perform as an experienced loader.” “Airman Gee is a very competent loadmaster, even as young as he is,” he continued. “He is very methodical in his thought processes and doesn’t fly from the hip. It’s very comforting to fly with a young loadmaster who has such maturity in the airplane.” Despite praise from his trainer, Gee is grateful for an opportunity to further his skills as a loadmaster. “I hope to become more proficient with this job in general during this exercise,” Gee said. “There’s a lot of training we’re getting done out here, learning to work with people from other countries, and even just being in a different location than home station provides training.” The exercise offers many unique opportunities for training and qualification, but it also provides Airmen like Gee an opportunity to personally work alongside NATO allies. “My favorite part so far has been working with the Hellenic air force,” Gee said. “It’s really great to see the different perspective of jumpers from a different country, seeing what they do and how they act. It’s a unique experience.” “I love this job,” he continued. “I mean, we’re in Greece; the traveling is why I enjoy it so much. Watching the load you set up go out the plane is also an awesome part. There can be some long nights, but it’s all really worth it. It’s really difficult not to enjoy this job.” Working alongside the U.S. Army and Greek forces, it has been good to be a part of the exercise, Gee said. “The weather is beautiful for flying, it’s a beautiful country to be in and it’s great to come out here and cooperate with the Hellenic air force

for this exercise,” he said. “It’s been a really great experience for me.” As the fourth iteration, Exercise Stolen Cerberus

continues to provide an opportunity for Airmen like Gee to experience first-hand and strengthen the partnership between the U.S. and Greece.

Celebrating 109 years of Army Reserve by Lt. Col. Jefferson Wolfe 7th Mission Support Command Public Affairs The AAFES food court on Ramstein Air Base filled up with Army Reserve Soldiers who brought robots, a CPR mannequin and, of course, a birthday cake. The 7th Mission Support Command celebrated the Army Reserve’s 109th birthday Friday afternoon in the Kaiserslautern Military Community Center. The four-hour event highlighted many of the 7th MSC’s capabilities and down-trace units. America’s Army Reserve celebrates 109 years in service to the Army and the Nation April 23, evolving from a tiny corps of medical professionals to a globally positioned and engaged operational reserve force. Information security – protecting the keys to our network by 86th Communications Squadron and 86th Airlift Wing Information Protection Office

The Command Cyber Readiness Inspection scheduled for May 22 to 26, is an inspection of Ramstein’s cybersecurity posture led by the Defense Information Systems Agency. When we hear the acronym ‘CCRI’ we often think about software updates and inconvenient reboots. While it’s true that the “health” of our network is a significant component of this inspection, the physical security of our

networks is also a significant consideration that requires attention from all of us. Consider the practices below to ensure you are doing your part to keep our networks secure: • Always maintain positive control of your Common Access Card and line badge. • Store all classified materials, including removable magnetic media, in a General Service Administrationapproved storage container in an accredited facility when not under constant observation by cleared personnel.

• Secure all cryptographic devices, Secure Telephone Equipment cards, and SIPRNET laptops/hard drives just as you would any other classified materials. • Establish a system of security checks at the close of each duty to ensure classified information is secure to include documentation of Standard Forms 700, 701 and 702. • If you discover unattended classified material, secure the material and report the incident to your security manager right away!

Each of us has a role to play in practicing and enforcing information security policies and procedures, and correcting deficiencies where needed. Engage your security manager if you have any questions, or need clarification on policies and procedures. In addition to your security manager, the 86th Airlift Wing Information Protection Office can provide assistance when needed. Maintaining a strong information security posture will not only ensure success in the upcoming CCRI, it will keep Ramstein Cyber Ready 365!

Garrison customers make themselves heard through ICE by Mary Davis U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz Public Affairs Office Providing feedback about local-area services has never been easier for U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz customers due to the growing usage of the Interactive Customer Evaluation system or ICE. “ICE is the Department of Defense online customer feedback system that allows customers to provide specific feedback on services, helping service providers identify and address any customer concerns for improvement,” said Linda Bergo, USAG RP ICE organization manager. Providing customer feedback improves service by letting service providers know if patrons have good or bad experiences at their establishments and why; and garrison customers have no problem telling service providers about their experiences, Bergo said. “Based on April 2016 through March 2017, USAG RP services in ICE received 3,589 comments,” explained Bergo, who has worked with the ICE program for more than six years. “Of those comments, 3,189 answered the satisfaction question, giving the garrison an 81 per-

cent satisfaction rate on an average of about 300 comments a month.” At the DoD level, Installation Management Command-level customers make up over 55 percent of the entire ICE mission with a total of nearly 4.2 million comments overall. “It’s not surprising when you consider IMCOM manages more than 70 installations worldwide and is the proponent for all Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation programs throughout the Army,” said IMCOM Commander Lt. Gen. Kenneth R. Dahl. “It puts a burden on our service-provider managers, but it’s well worth the effort because of the information it provides us as decision makers.” ICE also provides a means for customers to receive direct responses on their comments. Customers only need to check the “Response Requested” box and provide their phone number or email address before submitting their comments. Of those that were dissatisfied and requested a follow-up response, 90 percent of the customers were answered within three business days. Within the last six months, that number increased to 91 percent, and since January, the program is at 92 percent – topping the IMCOM rate of 81 percent for follow-up response time.

“It really is a great tool for service providers to hear the ‘voice of the customer’ directly from their patrons. USAG RP is a customer service organization, and we need feedback from our customers to make sure we are meeting their needs,” Bergo said. “Customers have the opportunity to say what works for them and what doesn’t, as well as receive specific answers to their questions. This, in turn, supports readiness and quality of life for all our community members.” Do anonymous comments get processed? All comments are taken seriously, Bergo said. All comments are read and required to have a response noted in ICE, regardless if they are anonymous or not. Many anonymous comments do present a challenge, because they are not able to directly help a customer, Bergo said. In some cases, there are not enough details to fully understand the issue. “There are pros and cons when submitting an anonymous comment,” she said. “On the pro side, a customer can state what they think and how they feel with privacy. On the con side, they may not get the help or answer they need in the timeframe they may need it. It is ICE policy to keep comments and contact information confi-

dential with no fear of reprisal.” Although many in USAG RP make comments, not all of them are negative, Bergo said. “The majority of ICE comments are customers telling us about their positive experiences. Customers also use ICE to ask questions about services or tell us what they would like changed,” she said. “Many examples involve requests to change the hours of facilities. We just want honest feedback.” Dahl encourages every IMCOM customer to make use of the program. “By sharing your honest feedback, together we can work to improve service delivery and achieve IMCOM’s goal of providing world-class customer service,” he said. “Just as importantly, ICE is a good indication of what programs mean the most to the customers,” Dahl said, “which is important data in an operating environment with limited resources.” For more information or to make an ICE comment, visit http://ice.disa.mil/index. cfm?fa=site&site_id=248 or click on the ICE icon at the bottom of the USAG RP website at http://www.rp.army.mil/.
