Strengthening NATO through engineer engagements

In the wake of the ongoing crisis in Ukraine, U.S. Air Forces in Europe engineers are looking for new ways to improve interoperability, engineer procedures, and build new capabilities where none existed previously.

As part of this effort, USAFE headquarters, in coordination with the 435th Construction and Training Squadron, hosted two partner engagements last week at Ramstein Air Base.

The first visit included delegations from the French and Finnish militaries who were interested in the U.S. Air Force’s processes on restoring airfield operating surfaces following enemy attacks, and the second visit included the Deputy Chief of Staff Support at NATO Air Command accompanied by his engineer support staff. Their visits primarily focused on updating NATO’s guiding documents and solidifying the concept of operation for all Partner Nations, as well as improving their understanding of airfield damage repair.

The engagements were beneficial for all parties and helped to strengthen the NATO alliance and engineer capabilities throughout Europe.

APORA medical symposium hosts 28 nations in Lusaka, Zambia

Medical personnel from the Zambian Defence Force and United States Air Forces Europe- Air Forces Africa hosted the annual in-person African Partner Outbreak Response Alliance symposium in Lusaka, Zambia, May 8-12.

APORA is the first military-tocivilian symposium to be held in Zambia since the Office of Security Cooperation opened at the U.S. Embassy in Zambia.

The 13th iteration of APORA, facilitated by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, focused on Rapid Response Team Roster development, which refers to the capability of a country or aggregate of nations to form a team that would deploy to support a partner nation’s outbreak response. These teams would be self-sustained, ready, and capable of responding immediately to any participating APORA member’s medical needs.

“We have an APORA forum that can bring different countries together as partners to mitigate outbreaks whenever and wherever they occur,” said Zambia

Brig. Gen. (Dr.) Levy Muchemwa, Director General-Defence Force Medical Services.

During the symposium, the

CDC facilitated workshops that enabled representatives from APORA members to design and build an RRT roster with feedback

from partner nations, create staffing and rostering standard operating procedures for their countries’ RRT program and learn practical

applications of change management to help implement the concepts learned in their countries.

“More and more nations are looking at APORA and seeing the magnificent work it is putting forward as well as the culture of cooperation it nurtures,” said Col. Steven W. Lehr United States Air Forces Europe – Air Forces Africa Command Surgeon General. “When you look at the growing membership count it is evident that APORA is tapping into the inherent human desire to respond and prop each other up in times of crisis.”

Participation in APORA is open to all African nations that desire to join. As a result, its membership has skyrocketed from 12 initial participating countries to 32 contributing nations, welcoming five new members at the iteration — including Botswana, Burundi, Malawi, Republic of Congo and Zambia.

“I am confident APORA will continue to grow, cementing a culture of mutual trust and cooperation that will enable partner nations to effectively respond to any obstacle the future might bring” Lehr emphasized.

21st TSC Celebrates Bundeswehr Logistics Command’s 10th anniversary

Logisticians and senior leaders from the U.S. Army’s 21st Theater Sustainment Command and the Bundeswehr Logistics Command, special guests and the public celebrated the latter command’s 10th Anniversary in Erfurt, May 6.

The celebration included dynamic and static displays, including vehicles from 21st TSC’s 16th Sustainment Brigade; demonstrations, and a special reception.

Bundeswehr Logistics Command Commander Maj. Gen. Gerald Funke and 21st TSC Commander Maj. Gen. James Smith were among the speakers.

“On behalf of the 21st Theater Sustainment Command and the U.S. Army, we offer you a hearty congratulations on your 10-year anniversary,” said Smith, as he addressed guests, including former BwLOGCOM commanders Maj. Gen Hans-Erich Antoni and Maj. Gen. Volker Thomas.

“It has been a fruitful ten years for your organization, centered as a resource of the ever evolving operational conditions in Europe. Today is also an opportunity to acknowledge our appreciation for the long-standing partnership and friendship between our Commands and our Nations.

“The strength and connections we have formed have proven vital, as we witnessed the importance of

NATO, and a united and coordinated response, to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. This conflict highlights the importance of our collective organizations’ ability to stay ready and work together. We came together to help defend every inch of NATO’s territory to protect our Allies.”

The two commands share a long-standing partnership formally

recognized with a Memorandum of Partnership in March 2015 based on collaboration, mutual support and regular exchanges at various levels. It also established a BwLOGCOM liaison at 21st TSC on Panzer Kaserne, Kaiserslautern.

Smith cited a wide range of support services and initiatives, from container transport as part

of the U.S. Army Europe-Africa-led exercise DEFENDER-Europe 20, to the construction of a field camp in the logistic support area at the BwLOGCOM logistics school and the construction and operation of a field tank farm at the MunsterBergen military training area in northern Germany as examples of the partnership’s impact.

Lt. Col. Thies Neelsen, the BwLOGCOM liaison officer with the 21st TSC since 2013, said U.S. participation in the anniversary celebration speaks to the partnership’s strength.

“We’re really happy to have the Americans here at Erfurt,” said Neelsen. “The USAREUR-AF Band, Maj. Gen. Smith and the delegation from 21st for the display. It publicly demonstrates our friendship to a large audience.”

The Bundeswehr Logistics Command is based at LöberfeldKaserne barracks in Erfurt. It is the Joint Support and Enabling Service’s largest capability coordination command. It is the center of competence and seat of responsibility for Bundeswehr logistics operations, training and development.

21st Theater Sustainment Command is U.S. Army Europe and Africa’s lead organization for all sustainment activities including logistics support, transportation, combat sustainment, human resources, finance, contracting and all other areas in the field of sustainment. Headquartered in Kaiserslautern, and comprised of more than 10 subordinate units operating throughout USAREURAF area of operations, First in Support Soldiers are positioned to be key enablers in unified synchronization of strategic and operational access, reach and freedom of action whenever and wherever needed.

Ramstein AB remembers, reflects Kindergraves Memorial

In honor of the 451 American infants buried at Kaiserslautern Cemetery, the Kaiserslautern Kindergraves Memorial Foundation held an annual memorial service in the Kaiserslautern City Cemetery, May 20.

The children were born from 1952 to 1971 at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center or at German hospitals nearby, but passed away at birth or shortly after.

“Traditionally we hold this event on the Saturday after Mother’s Day,” said Christine Schneider, the German-American International Women’s Club president. “Our American friends and neighbors know that we care, regardless of the time that has passed.”

Following every Mother’s Day, a ceremony is held for the infants. This allows service members and families to show their support for

those impacted by the children's passing.

"There’s a sacred connection between parent and child," said U.S. Air Force Brig. Gen. Otis C. Jones, 86th Airlift Wing commander. “We gather to reflect on these mothers and infants, but we can also reflect on our own children and the love we have for them.”

Those who attended the ceremony were families of children, local officials and members of the military community. Attendees placed wreaths, prayed, and observed a moment of silence.

“We all have different experiences but we understand how fragile life is,” said Jones. “We must cherish everyday, as a gift, one not to be taken for granted.”

Kaiserslautern Military Community gathers to honor, remember children gone too soon

Losing a child is one of the most traumatic and painful experiences a parent can go through. While the grieving process can vary greatly from person to person, it often lasts a lifetime.

While there is no “right” way to grieve the loss of a child, it is crucial for parents to allow themselves to grieve and find ways to honor and remember their children.

Between 1952-1971, 451 infants were laid to rest in the Kaiserslautern Main Cemetery kindergraves, near Daenner Kaserne. These kindergraves were specifically designated for the infants of Americans stationed in Germany who died at birth or shortly after, but could not be brought back to the United States.

The term “kindergrave,” stems from the German word “kinder,” which means children, and the English word “graves.” Kindergraves refers to a section of the cemetery where young children’s graves are located.

Originally, the City of Kaiserslautern donated two public burial plots for these infants, with an initial lease expiring in the 1980’s. When that lease was nearing expiration, the cemetery management contacted the German-American International Women’s Club, who had been caring for the graves, and informed them that the children’s remains would be removed to allow for cemetery expansion. In order to retain burial plots in accordance with local customs, families are typically required to make lease payments.

Determined to protect the

graves, the women’s club worked to retain the plots and preserve the graves through donations. The cemetery management agreed to let the Ramstein Area Chief’s Group (U.S. Air Force E-9’s), a private organization affiliated with the U.S. military, in partnership with the women’s club, assume responsibility for the gravesites, which were later moved to a new area in the heart of the cemetery. A new lease was agreed upon and signed.

The Kaiserslautern Kindergraves Memorial Foundation was established in 1986, solidifying a commitment to preserving the memorial site and providing support to families seeking information about their lost children. The foundation plays a critical role in organizing memorial events, and serving as a resource for those affected by the

loss of the infants.

Every year, on the Saturday following Mother’s Day, the foundation holds a remembrance ceremony at the Kaiserslautern Main Cemetery to honor the children who were unable to return home to their families. This year, the event was held May 20.

“We will not give up caring for these children,” said Christine Schneider, president of the German-American International Women’s Club Kaiserslautern.

“Thank you all for remembering the sacrifices that were made by the parents who put their children to rest here.”

Several official representatives of the U.S. Forces stationed in Kaiserslautern attended the event.

Brig. Gen. Otis Jones, 86th Airlift Wing and installation commander at Ramstein Air Base, provided remarks.

“There is a sacred bond between a parent and their child,” he said. “The love we have for our children is deep-rooted, and I imagine that a similar intense emotion would be present in the pain from their loss.”

While our individual experiences may differ, Jones said we all can understand how fragile life is. He encouraged everyone present to cherish each day as a gift, emphasizing the importance of not taking life for granted.

“The children we remember and celebrate today were citizens of this great community,” he added. “A community built nearly three quarters of a century ago, supporting each other in good times and in bad. The kindergraves are a shining testimony to the enduring friendship and bond shared by the community, withstanding the test of time.”

US Army gains new soldier, father couldn’t be prouder

When you approach a new path in life, you don’t always realize how that choice is going to affect the rest of your life. When your children are born, you reflect about those choices and how they will shape your family’s future.

As the Month of the Military Child came to an end, Lt. Col. Todd Cheney, deputy garrison chaplain for U.S Army Garrison RheinlandPfalz in Baumholder, talked about how his military career drove many decisions his family took, but also how it inspired his oldest child, Kyle, to pursue a military career as well.

“All three of my kids are military children,” said Cheney. In the past 17 years, he and his family went through countless moves until arriving in Germany in 2021.

In his position, he enables religious support across the Garrison footprint, managing religious support staff, providing developmental counseling, and ensuring Unity Ministry Team training is complete.

Cheney was born and raised in Los Angeles County, California. He decided to join the military after a conversation with his own father.

“At the time, I wasn’t really doing much with my life,” he said jokingly. “I really wasn’t given a choice. My dad basically said, ‘you’re either going to join the military or you’re going to go to a trade school.’”

Cheney realized that this could be his opportunity to shine. He was excited to carry on his grandfather’s legacy, proudly serving his country. Fred Cheney served as a Marine during WWII.

Cheney initially enlisted as an emergency medical technician for the U.S. Army Reserve from 1989 to 1997. He had a break in service of about 9 years during which he attended school to obtain a second

master’s degree and worked in the medical insurance field, before returning to the military in 2006 when he received a direct commission in the Army Chaplain Corps and became and active Army chaplain.

One major accomplishment during his military career was

helping the Army Chaplain Corps establish the Graduate School for Army Chaplain Corps Professional Development at Fort Jackson, South Carolina, he said.

“The thing that the Army has taught me the most is leadership,” Cheney said. “Being able to look at problems as a leader and then

he really wanted to do with his life,” he said.

Kyle PCS’d to Germany with his parents in November 2021. After three full years of college in the United States working on a nursing degree, he still wasn’t sure it was the direction he wanted to go.

“I had been dropping hints to him since he graduated high school a few years ago,” said Cheney. “I told him that the military could give him a baseline of medical skills. If he still wanted to pursue a career in the medical field, the military would be a great option to get started.”

The very next day, Kyle told him about his decision to join the Army.

Kyle contacted a local Army recruiter on Kleber Kaserne, and by Aug. 15 he was on a plane to Fort Sill, Oklahoma, to start Basic Training. He graduated from Advanced Individual Training in March and now holds the rank of private first class.

“As parents, we want to prepare our children to be able to ‘leave the nest,’ said Cheney.“ I told my son that it didn’t feel like his mom and I were being good parents unless we helped him become independent.”

When Cheney and his wife Kristin heard about Kyle’s decision to enlist in the Army, they felt an elevated sense of pride.

“We were thankful and happy for him,” Cheney said. “We are really proud to see him doing something that goes beyond himself, serving others and supporting his nation. It is really something that fills your heart with pride and joy.”

make good decisions that help the greater good has been a wonderful thing for me.”

Seeing that his son Kyle was struggling to figure things out for himself, Cheney decided to have a conversation with him.

“I sat down with my son and told him it was time to decide what

Cheney encourages his son and the next generation of Soldiers to never stop believing in what they can achieve.

“Your potential is only limited by your attitude and your effort,” he said. “And, always do PT, you have to be physically fit to BE ALL YOU CAN BE.”

Devour specialized treats at new Warrior Restaurant at Baumholder

The Knight’s Lair Warrior Restaurant is the first of its kind, with specialized meals, a more comprehensive range of options, and the fuel necessary to improve our Soldiers’ lives and the Army’s readiness.

This premiere Soldier supported dining facility is located in the European Theater and is the most modern warrior restaurant in the United States Army.

The newly renovated Knight’s Lair Warrior Restaurant celebrated its grand reopening on May 9. The refurbishment’s focus on this facility represents a significant milestone in the Army Food Service Modernization Plan, which aims to provide our soldiers with high-quality, nutritious meals that meet their dietary needs and preferences.

The Army Food Service Modernization Plan is a compre -

hensive initiative that seeks to improve the quality, variety, and availability of food at Army dining facilities across the globe.

“The food tastes really good, but it also helps that the new DFAC is so much nicer than the other facilities,” said Sgt. Charles Morrison, a Soldier assigned to the 44th Expeditionary Signal Battalion, “They have so many more options.”

The plan recognizes that good nutrition is essential to maintaining our Soldiers’ health, fitness, and readiness, and it aims to provide them with the best possible dining experience.

“Dining together is a timehonored tradition in the military, and it is one that helps to foster a sense of unity and belonging among Soldiers,” said Col. Angel Estrada, commander of the 16th Sustainment Brigade. “This facility will provide a welcoming and inclusive space where Soldiers can come together to share a meal, swap stories, and build relationships.”

Ukrainian tank crews, maintainers to begin training on US M1 Abrams in Germany soon

The Defense Department has announced the arrival of 31 M1 Abrams training tanks to Grafenwoehr, Germany, in preparation for U.S.-led training of Ukrainian tank crews and maintainers before the tanks are sent to the front lines to arm Ukrainian forces against Russia’s unprovoked war of aggression.

Ukrainian crews are expected to arrive in Germany and begin training in the upcoming weeks, Pentagon Press Secretary Air Force Brig. Gen. Pat Ryder said during a briefing today.

“As we’ve discussed previously, this extensive training program for Ukrainian crews and maintainers is intended to prepare them for their critical roles ahead and effectively operating the M1 tank and defending Ukrainian people,” Ryder said.

The U.S. announced that it would deliver the tanks, armed with advanced armor and weapons, in January. Originally the U.S. planned on procuring new M1A2 Abrams tanks to send to

Ukraine, using funds from the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative.

However, the Defense Department decided in March to refurbish M1A1 Abrams tanks already in U.S. inventory to shorten the timeline.

The M1A1 variant will have “a very similar capability” to the M1A2, Ryder said in March.

The U.S. is on track to deliver those 31 combat-ready tanks to Ukraine in the fall and will be preparing crews on training versions concurrent with the refurbishment process in preparation for the delivery.

The training will not only prepare crews for operating the tanks in battle, Ryder said, but will also prepare maintenance personnel to keep the them operational.

“Certainly a key aspect of the training will be maintenance and sustainment of that capability,” he said. “You’ve heard us talk about the fact that the M1 is a complex machine that requires a lot of maintenance to sustain it and keep it operating. So that will be crucial, which is why we’re doing the training in stride with the actual refurbishment of the tanks.”

The M1 Abrams training adds

to a broader U.S.-led effort to help Ukraine defend itself against Russia’s invading forces.

Approximately 500 Ukrainian soldiers are currently conducting combined arms training at the Grafenwoehr and Hohenfels training areas in Germany. That training includes instruction marksmanship and rendering medical aid, in addition to other basic soldiering tasks.

Approximately 10,700 Ukrainian soldiers have completed training and returned to the front lines, including 6,100 who have completed small arms training, 4,000 who have completed specific platform training and 600 who have completed staff training.

The U.S. has also continued to support Ukrainian forces by providing weapons packages crucial to defending their homeland.

Last week, the U.S. announced its latest $1.2 billion package as part of the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative aimed at bolstering Ukraine’s air defense and artillery needs.

That package includes more 155 mm artillery rounds and additional air defense systems and equipment to integrate Western air-defense platforms.

Defenders memorialized during police week, DAF expands Security Forces training

Secretary of the Air Force Public Affairs

The names of three Department of the Air Force defenders were among the 556 fallen officers read aloud during the 35th Annual Candlelight vigil May 13 as part of the many events that take place across the country during National Police Week, May 14-19.

The three defenders honored during the vigil were Tech. Sgt. Jason Norton, Staff Sgt. Brian McElroy and Senior Airman Jason Nathan.

“It is important to honor their memories and celebrate the achievements they made to the defense of our nation,” said Brig. Gen. Thomas Sherman, director of Security Forces. “National Police Week in general is a time to reflect on those we lost, as well as a time to come together as law enforcement professionals within the Security Forces career field.”

At this year’s vigil, Timothy Gerald, deputy director of Security Forces, attended the vigil to represent the Department of the Air Force defender family.

“Our Department of the Air Force civilian police officers have worked

alongside uniformed defenders for more than a decade. Together, our active duty, Guard, Reserve, and civilian defenders conducting law enforcement make us a stronger fighting force,” said Gerald, who also serves as the senior Air Force civilian and functional manager overseeing all matters concerning the utilization, development and career field management of the 4,600-person DAF civilian security and police force. “Thank you to our Total Force defender family for their dedicated service.”

National Police Week is a time to reflect on the challenges that law enforcement officers face every day. The Security Forces Air Staff continues to support law enforcement officers by ensuring that they have adequate resources and training.

Law enforcement is an important aspect of Security Force’s larger mission of base defense. Defenders protect Airmen, Guardians and their families; defend resources, equipment and capability; and assure that air and space missions supporting the DAF are carried out successfully and securely.

Law enforcement is not only important for the safety and well-being of Airmen

— it is also a key force-multiplying capability vested in base defense.

As the Air Staff recognizes law enforcement professionals during Police Week, it also reflects on the major efforts underway to support civilians within its law enforcement community. In 2022, the Security Forces enterprise launched an effort to build the law enforcement specialty directly within the civilian career field. This required selecting a subset

of the 43,000 Total Force Security Forces population to be uniquely identified as law enforcement practitioners.

Building on that effort, the Air Staff expanded the Police Officer Training and Standards Accredited Academy to accept military students. This enables the Security Forces enterprise to establish a foundation of base defense training, creating base defense-focused defenders within the basic courses while later selecting Airmen for

specialized law enforcement training at the academy.

The Air Force Security Forces Center facilitated funding to increase course availability to 500 students per year. All graduates are credentialed and badged federal law enforcement officers. Finally, to sustain officer skills, the AFSFC will introduce a 40-hour annual recertification course and additional instruction for field training officers, sergeant/supervisors and deputy directors.

‘Keeping Tradition Alive’: ‘Blackhorse’ rides again at Presidio of Monterey

When the 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment “Blackhorse” Horse Detachment visits the Presidio of Monterey, it’s like two longstanding friends getting together for a reunion.

The 11th Cavalry Regiment was stationed at the Presidio from 1919 to 1940, and on Sept. 14, 1924, their shared histories became further united. That was the day lighting struck a 55,000-barrel oil tank in Monterey and ignited a fire so large and destructive that it took days to extinguish. The regiment’s “Blackhorse” moniker and patch emblem refer to the color all the unit’s horses turned that day because of the soot and ash in the air as they helped with firefighting efforts.

Meanwhile, two Soldiers gave their lives fighting the fire: Pvt. George Bolio, assigned to the 11th Cav. Regt., and Pvt. Eustace Watkins, assigned to the 76th Field Artillery Regiment. Leaders named a gate and road after both Soldiers, and the main gate and road into the Presidio still pay tribute to Bolio. Watkins Gate, at the former Fort Ord, no longer exists, but Watkins Gate Road still runs across Fort Ord National Monument. Those associated with the regiment and installation see a remembrance of the fire on a nearly daily basis—whether they know the history or not.

The detachment visits the Presidio nearly annually for the Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center’s Language Day, an event that features cultural performances and displays. This year, on May 12, members of the detachment presented and retrieved the colors, met with service members, and displayed their riding skills with two demonstrations. They also toured the Presidio of Monterey Museum with a special presentation from Cameron Binkley, command historian for the DLIFLC, on May 11, and took a traditional ride on an area beach on May 13.

Today the unit is stationed at Fort Irwin, California, and Capt. Dave Richards, the detachment’s officer in charge, said members of the detachment have a special appreciation for visiting the Presidio because it helps keep them in touch with their heritage.

“The motto of our horse detachment is ‘Keeping Tradition Alive,’ so this is a really unique trip for us that we do every year because we get to come back here where our actual roots are,” Richards said.

All members of the detachment come from the 11th ACR, and members of the detachment vote to decide who joins after a two-week

selection process, Richards said. Members are top performers from all military occupational specialties and do not have to have any experience with horses. It is a temporary assignment that usually lasts between 18 months and two years.

In addition to keeping the tradition alive at as many as 100 community relations events a year, the detachment’s 20 Soldiers and 16 horses train almost exclusively for competitions, Richards said. They have won the U.S. Cavalry Association’s national competition for the past four years consecutively and six times total — the most of any horse Cavalry team throughout the Army.

“We take a lot of pride in being the best regiment and the finest in the land and being those national champions year after year after year,” Richards said.

Richards said the Cavalry horseback riding skills that Soldiers used in the early 1900s are the same skills that the detachment uses today.

“We use the appropriate tack, the appropriate saddles and bridles and bits that were used by the Cavalry in the early 1900s,” Richards said. “They’re all built to specification using manuals from the early 1900s that are still original, period-piece manuals. Everything is as exact and historically accurate as possible.”

That also includes the detachment’s uniforms and guns, Richards said.

Spc. Zachary Carroll has been a member of the detachment for one year and said the experience has changed his life.

“I’ve really found a new passion,” said Carroll, who is an Infantryman by MOS. “I never was a horse person before, but I have a lifelong obsession

here. I get to come to work every day and work with this guy [Comanche, the horse]. It’s the best job in the world.”

Cpl. Sarah Alsup, a generator mechanic by MOS, has been a member of the detachment for about six months. She grew up with horses and joining the detachment was one of her main goals when she arrived at Fort Irwin.

In addition to working with horses every day, Alsup said the detachment’s impact on the larger world, as well as its heritage, make her especially proud to be a member.

“Ten [members of the detachment] came out here and we interacted with almost a thousand in a few hours,” Alsup said, referring to Language Day. “That’s a pretty big impact if you stop and think about it.”

Alsup said she appreciated Binkley’s presentation about the

unit’s history in Monterey and it helped her gain a deeper understanding of Army tradition.

“Getting to see where your unit has been, is kind of like seeing where your ancestors come from,” Alsup said. “We live by the motto, ‘Keeping Tradition Alive’ every day. We do it all the time. Every day we think about it. We talk about it, but now we actually get to see it, which is really good, because we can talk about things, but until you put them into play or get a real visual of what it is, you never really know. Now we know.”

Binkley said the detachment’s visit is meaningful historically because the Army quartered the 11th Cavalry Regt. at the Presidio between the World Wars. It is also an important part of Monterey’s local history.

“Older residents of Monterey may still recall the days when the mounted Cavalry’s performance team drilled on Soldier Field or at other

local venues during public demonstrations of their skills, quite similar to those shown by the detachment during Language Day,” Binkley said.

The regiment has a storied history dating all the way back to its creation in 1901 to support military actions in the Philippines through the Vietnam era until today, where the 11th ACR serves as the opposition force at Fort Irwin’s National Training Center, Binkley said.

The Army created the 11th Cavalry Regt. just a year before the establishment of the Presidio of Monterey, and it created both for the same reason — to support the rise of the United States as a Pacific power, Binkley said.

Richards said it is important to note that while the regiment has switched from horses to mechanized vehicles such as Humvees and Strykers, the basic principles of the Cavalry have not changed.

“The Cavalry has always been that formation that’s out front, scouting, scoping out the enemy, probing lines,” Richards said. “They’re the ones that are setting the conditions for the main fight and they’re gathering as much intelligence as they can for the commander to then decide, ‘This is how I want to go about solving whatever complex problem that is in front of me.’”

The detachment is one of six horse detachments throughout the Army, and while they play a major role in keeping traditions alive, it’s crucial for all Army units to honor their history and traditions, Richards said.

“A lot of Soldiers will tell you the reason they joined the military is for the men and women to their left and to their right that are fighting right beside them,” Richards said. “History is our tie-in to those people who were to the left and to the right of us going all the way back to the founding of the Army and our units.”

Two military nurses share common ground of service, education

Two military nurses may have taken different paths to their chosen profession, but their stories share common ground.

U.S. Army 1st. Lt. Ingrid GarciaGomez started her journey in Nicaragua where her family served as officers, pilots, infantry, and medics during the Nicaraguan Revolution before immigrating to the United States in the 1980s.

A family legacy in the military service runs deep for U.S. Navy Lt. Gabrielle Riley. Her sister, U.S. Navy Lt. Liza Ducusin, is an intensive-care unit nurse at Naval Medical Center San Diego. Their father, Nic Ducusin, retired as a master chief petty officer after 32 years of service.

Both are proud of their military lineages and experienced first-hand their families’ commitment to their countries and military, providing the catalyst to follow in their footsteps.

Garcia-Gomez had several male relatives graduate from La Academia Militar de Nicaragua (Nicaraguan Military Academy). After completing the basic officer course, they trained with the 173rd Airborne, Fort Campbell in Kentucky, earning airborne wings at Fort Gulick, a former U.S. base in the Panama Canal Zone. They also graduated from an infantry officer course, counter-insurgency training, and jungle operations training at Fort Gulick.

“I was influenced by my family’s military heritage and pride of

becoming United States citizens,” said Garcia-Gomez, who received a direct commission and became a U.S. Army nurse in 2022 after serving eight years in the U.S. Army Reserve as a patient administration specialist. She earned her nursing degree from Chamberlain University in Jacksonville, Florida, in 2016.

Riley’s families’ heritage and U.S. Navy service are also sources of great pride and motivate her to be the best sailor and nurse she can be.

“My father was 18 when he joined the Navy in the Philippines back in 1974 after graduating high school in Subic Bay,” she said. “He came from a large family, and they did not have much to live off of. Once my dad saw that there was an opportunity to join, he took it.”

After moving to Jacksonville, Ducusin established a home there after two years in the U.S. Navy and helped pay for his siblings to come to the U.S., go to school and earn their citizenship. He encouraged his brother, Jose, to enlist in the U.S. Navy, who retired as a petty officer first class.

Although Riley’s dad became an officer after graduating Limited Duty Officer School in Newport, Rhode Island, he wanted to retire as a master chief.

“His dedication to the Navy and his family encourages me to continue my Navy career and follow his legacy of service to our country,” said Riley, who earned a nursing degree from Chamberlain’s Navy Nurse Program in 2018.

Garcia-Gomez and Riley not only share a sense of pride in their respective families but also in calling themselves military nurses.

“The best part of being a Navy Nurse is participating in different tactical trainings and talking with sailors and others in the Navy,” Riley said. “I enjoy the comradery in the units where I’ve worked, the multiple teaching opportunities and the continuous trainings we, as nurses, need to maintain in order to fulfill our duties.”

Before becoming a U.S. Army nurse, Garcia-Gomez deployed twice during her eight years in the Reserve. In 2017, her unit, the 331st Minimal Care Detachment, was mobilized to Aguadilla, Puerto Rico following Hurricane Maria. Three years later while serving with the 7217th Medical Support Unit in Perrine, Florida, she deployed with the 7236th Medical Support Unit, Fort Benning, Georgia, to Landstuhl Army Medical Center, in support of Operation Freedom Sentinel.

While in the Reserve, she worked as an emergency room nurse at the West Palm Beach VA Medical Center in Florida. Gomez-Garcia transferred to Broward Health North, Level II Trauma Center, in Pompano Beach, Florida.

“I always knew I wanted to become an Army ER nurse, she said. “It may sound cliché, but I crave the fast pace, quick thinking, and the ‘keep calm under pressure’ feeling. When I first joined the United States Army Reserve, I was a private and eventually became an NCO (noncommissioned officer), the coveted ‘back bone of the Army.’ I lived and breathed the Army.”

Riley’s nursing career began at Naval Medical Center San Diego. She served as a medical surgical nurse for three years and then two years in the emergency department.

Riley received orders for Naval Hospital Jacksonville in Florida where she served little more than a year before going to U.S. Naval Hospital Yokosuka in Japan.

“I wanted to serve active duty members, their family members and retirees in the scope of health care,” she said.

Garcia-Gomez, who received a direct commission into the U.S. Army and completed a basic officers leadership course in 2022, began her active duty career in the emergency room at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center.

“Nothing made more sense to me than to join the Army Nurse Corps and share my experience and knowledge gained as a civilian nurse and NCO with other military nurses,” she said.

Garcia-Gomez and Riley are also recent graduates of the Defense Health Agency’s Combat Casualty Care Course, known as C4, one of the readiness training opportunities within the Defense Medical Readiness Training Institute curriculum. The C4 training provides four days of professional and combat medicine in realistic and challenging settings.

“As a nurse I felt pride teaching a few of the residents how to start IV’s, prime IV fluid bags, splint and set up

for a chest tube,” Garcia-Gomez said. “It was wonderful to combine forces in the field with medical doctors, nurses and physician assistants from the Air Force, Navy along with allied foreign comrades like South Korea and Germany.”

Riley said she wanted to learn about operational medicine and C4 provided that opportunity.

“I wanted to learn what it’s like to be an EMT in tactical settings,” she said. “I think it [C4] made me a better officer and nurse because as a leader, it helps us navigate or delegate tasks to individuals who can do certain jobs. It also reminded me on how to give certain medications that we rarely use in [military hospitals] when acuity of the patients is not that high.”

Garcia-Gomez said that every nurse should attend the C4 training.

“The Army has a saying ‘we train as we fight,’” she said. “Preparing for war where they predict prolonged field care with little resources makes it crucial to have strong triage skills and make adequate use of medical equipment and medicine. C4 does exactly that.”

PIRMASENS from Page 1

(over 100 stores) and its close proximity (10 kilometers) to the French Alsace/ Lorraine region. This charming town has a traditional feel that is reflected by its attractive architecture as well as in the demeanor of the locals.

History

The importance of military history is indicated by the city’s circular Celtic walls and medieval castles to the more recent Siegfried Line strongholds. In fact, the city was founded by the passion for the military by Landgrave Ludwig IX who chose Pirmasens as his residence in 1741 because he was not allowed to keep grenadier guards in the French town Bouxville. Within a few years the first Pirmasens Garrison grew from 37 to several thousand grenadiers.

In November 9, 1938, Pirmasens’ synagogue was destroyed as a result of the Kristallnacht. The city was captured by United States troops in March 1945 and became Pirmasens in the Bundesland Rhineland-Palatinate in 1946.

Things to see and do Pirmasens has a number of sights that are worth your visit. To name a few are the Museum of Shoes, Siegfried Line Museum, Dynamikum, Heinrich Burkel’s picture gallery, WAWI Chocolate Museum and more.

The German Shoe Museum

Hauenstein is located approximately 20 kilometers outside of Pirmasens. Located in a four story old shoe factory, the museum highlights Pirmasens’ shoe industry which began around 1800. By the mid-19th century Pirmasens was the most important site of the German shoe industry. The museum illustrates the technical and social aspects of shoe manufacturing. The ground floor covers the period from 1740 to 1918. The first floor covers the time since 1945, which also highlights the impact of the World War II on the shoe industry. The second floor is still a fully, daily operating modern shoe factory, covers the years 1918 to 1945 as well as a presentation of social history. The top floor has a collection of over 3,000 pairs of historic shoes.

Siegfried Line Museum (also known as Westwallmuseum) lies underground in the former fortress of Gerstfeldhöhe. The museum’s theme is war, but it also views itself as a memorial to peace. The construction of the fortification that began 1938 was planned to be a 14-kilometer hollow passage including machine shops, a hospital, a barracks for 800 men, narrow gauge railway stations and an ammunition depot. However, this plan was discontinued in 1940. The Gerstfeldhöhe tunnel system was used as a warehouse for vehicle spares by the U.S. Army after the war up until the early 1990’s. This war museum is the ideal place for World War II bluffs to visit.

Dynamikum is a science museum with an overall theme on “movement.” The

exhibitions are divided into four themes: Accession, Mass in Motion, Rotating Movement and Moving Machines. The 160 exhibits (many interactive) explore the intuitive activity of various physical phenomena in science and technology. This science museum, that’s quite popular with small and big kids alike, consists of two floors and a total exhibition space of 4,000 square meters.

Heinrich Bürkel’s Gallery is where you can marvel at the works of the Pirmasens (1802-69) native. Buerkel is known for his landscape paintings. As a child his first sketch was of the Pimasens Hauptstrasse, progressing on to become a renowned artist in Munich. Located in Pirmasens’ Old Town Hall, the twenty oil paintings on display show a cross-section of his work and the depth of his talent from the almost photo-like quality of his depictions of everyday life in the 19th century. Buerkel’s works were once collected by kings and tsars and still today go under the hammer at world famous auction houses. It’s worth noting that three of his paintings that were stolen by the Americans during WWII were returned to Pirmasens in February of 2006.

Take a stroll through the small but fascinating WAWI Chocolate Museum

Learn about the company’s history and about making chocolate as well the stories behind the popular hollow chocolate figure. A trip to WAWI World is a great way to indulge your sweet tooth. Don’t forget to get a bite to eat at the café and then purchase discounted chocolate in the factory shop.

Walking and Cycle Tours

Being surrounded by the Palatinate Forest, Pirmasens has seemingly endless network of cycling and walking paths. For those interested, there are different

marathons participants can get involved with including the Schlabbeflicker cycle marathon, the Wasgau mountain bike marathon, team triathlon and more. The Pirmasens walking and cycling clubs also take visitors on a guided nature tours.

Rock Climbing

The southwest Palatinate attracts Europe’s climbing enthusiasts, with over 200 rock massifs and towers ascending into the skies. There are over 4,000 climbing tours for all climbing abilities.

Annual Events

Arriving in Pirmasens at a certain time of the year, visitors can experience world cultural events with a German touch.

• Landgrafen-Tage (Landgraves’ Days) is an event including operas and musicals held the second week of April

• The Schlabbeflicker-Fest (held this year August 4-6) is a unique uniformed parade of musicians as well as food, drinks and more.

• The Euro Classic Festival is held in September and is the second largest musical event in the Southwest. In conjunction with neighboring Zweibrücken and the French town Bitche in Lorraine, Euro Classic brings first rate operas and concerts by renowned artists in the region.

• Grenadiermarkt is an infantryman market with rides, food and more. This market is held during the Fall season.

• Novembermarkt is a fantastic funfair which includes rides, booths and food.

• Christmas Market offers traditional holiday delights including food and drinks to hand crafted toys, tree decorations and so much more.

Music in Pirmasens is a special treat, especially if you can make it to the Chantor’s

Pirmasens house or the Pirmasens choir of oratory. Performances at the Pirmasens theater’s festival hall are also one of a kind and a must-see.

Eating out

Though there are many great restaurants in Pirmasens, we will highlight a few. The Hotel-Restaurant Kunz, this luxury hotel has gotten good reviews and awards for years from restaurant guides and others including Michelin. Ristorante Pizzeria Da Mario is a fantastic restaurant with a wide range of high quality food at affordable prices. Kuchems-Brauhaus is the place to go for delectable German dishes and home brewed beers.

The shoe industry

As mentioned earlier, Pirmasens has been the home of footwear and footwear manufacturing for over 200 years. Still today the largest proportion of footwear production in Germany is still based here. German shoe companies include Peter Kaiser (Germany’s oldest shoe makers), Ergo Fit (the cardiology equipment manufacturer), Outsole, Footwear Concept and Design, Kennel and Schmenger Schuhfabrik.

In addition to being the location of the Testing and Research Institute for the footwear industry, the local vocational colleges and universities concentrate on fields in the footwear industry including logistics, leather working and technology. Pirmasens has molded itself as the center of expertise in the footwear industry.

How to get there

By car Pirmasens is approximately 30 minutes south of Kaiserslautern, 1 hour and 30 minutes south of Wiesbaden and under 2 hours northwest of Stuttgart.

ABC IN KMC: Otterberg’s Abteikirche

If you’ve ever driven through Otterberg you’re sure to have noticed the beautiful semi-timbered buildings on the main street, but have you ever asked yourself why there is a colossal church in such a small town? You may have also wondered about the sign “Wallonenstadt Otterberg” for a town of roughly 6,000 inhabitants, indicating its status as a city.

Otterberg has an eventful history and in the year 1145 the Cistercians (a Catholic order of monks) founded an abbey in Otterberg. The Cistercians preferred building in river valleys or in swampy areas, and as a sign of their humility and purity they began with the construction of the monastery at the Otterbach (stream).

The large monastic church, formerly part of the Cistercian monastery, was built between 1168 and 1254. The church is the most prominent landmark and

is the largest sacral building in its original form in the State of Rheinland-Pfalz. It is only a few square meters smaller than the cathedral in Speyer, which had to be restored after it was damaged on several different occasions.

After a few centuries of monastery life in Otterberg, the church was abandoned and slowly left to decay after the Protestant Reformation in the 16th century.

In the year 1579 Palatinate Count Johann Casimir allowed religious refugees from the Spanish Netherlands, exiled Calvinists referred to as Walloons, to settle on the premises of the abandoned monastery. In a decree he defined that certain parts of the monastery complex could be used to build new houses, while other sections were preserved such as the church, the chapter house, and the abbey house.

Initially 400 individuals were settled in the refugee encampment, but the industrious community quickly grew and only two years later, in 1581, Otterberg was granted city rights with a popula-

tion of 1,600 and still holds these rights today.

The Walloons, mainly from the French speaking part of Belgium, were proficient cloth makers and tanners, blacksmiths, carpenters and skilled craftsmen. Many buildings in the historic district were built by these skilled workers, such as the oldest house, the Ferkelsche Haus, which was built in 1606, the Alte Apotheke

(pharmacy), which was built in 1608, and the Blaues Haus, which was built in 1612.

Edifices built in the 17th and 18th centuries can still be found on the main street today with the Walloons and their craftsmanship playing a significant role in shaping the character of Otterberg. The square in front of the church features a granite sculpture of historic life and times in the city

and the neighboring Altstadt is great for strolling and dipping into the age of the Walloons. Did you know that in 1708 joint use of the church by Protestants and Catholics led to problems? The solution was to install a wall inside the church leading to services being offered in the transept for the Catholics and in the nave for the Protestants. In 1979 the wall was removed, and the church is now shared by both denominations. There is a fragrant herb garden behind the church, opened for visitors on weekends during the summer. Its smaller sister church, also built by the Cistercians, is the Klosterkirche to be found in nearby Enkenbach. The church offers grandiose classic concert throughout the seasons.
