USAFE Command Chief introduces his priorities Story and photos by Tech. Sgt. Micky M. Pena U.S. Air Forces in Europe and Air Forces Africa Public Affairs

Gen. David L. Goldfein and USAFEAFAFRICA Commander, Gen. Tod D. Wolters. Readiness, personal and professional development, and caring for one another will be where this command chief’s priorities stand. With an ever changing environment, Easton knows requiring and enabling readiness within the command must be a priority. Airmen in the command must transition from an assurance to deterrence posture in the European command and be prepared to support lines of effort of both EUCOM and AFRICOM. “We have to be ready when called upon,” Easton said. “We’re building relationships throughout the MAJCOM, AFRICOM and EUCOM to ensure we are communicating what we have through training and devel-

opmental opportunities in a joint environment because that’s how you create not only joint warfighters, but joint warfighters who are equipped and prepared,” he stated. To even further enhance readiness, Easton will also focus on building relationships between the headquarters and combatant command staff and building partnership capacity through senior leader engagement and bilateral exchanges. In regard to his second priority of personal and professional development, Easton is passionate about building a team of strong leaders prepared to mentor, mold and develop Airmen, and will institute a plethora of tier-focused programs to grow Airmen of all ranks. Just a few of these programs include Atlantic Stripe, which was

Walking into his office it can be easy to get the impression you are about to meet someone who embodies Air Force experience, evident by the various memorabilia scattered throughout the room. He’s been an aircraft maintainer. He’s been a military training instructor. He’s even been a non-commissioned officer academy commandant. Now, his desk plaque reads “command chief.” What’s unique is, just like his overall Air Force experience, his command chief experience has been varied as well. In the last 20 months he’s gone from command chief of a wing, a numbered Air Force, and now, he is known as Chief Master Sgt. Phillip L. Easton, Command Chief Master Sergeant, U.S. Air Forces in Europe and U.S. Air Forces Africa. As the USAFE-AFAFRICA command chief, Easton is responsible for a total of 21,000 enlisted force personnel and all matters affecting their readiness, training, professional development and effective utilization. Additionally, he coordinates with the headquarters’ staff, commanders, and senior personnel on administration and implementation of command policy and directs enlisted theater security engagement and building partnership capacity in an area of responsibility that comprises 104 countries in support of both U.S. European Command and U.S. Africa Command. What his vast experience has taught him is that as a senior leader, it is vital that his priorities compliment his senior leaders to be successful. For that reason, Easton has put much time and dedication into choosing his three priorities which will compliment those of our Air Force Chief of Staff

Whether you are working in the dining facility, on the flightline or a defender at the gate, you must realize how your job is a chain reaction. It effects the wing, which then impacts the mission of the MAJCOM that further provides resources to the com-

When Airmen understand their purpose, they become inspired, and when inspired because they understand how they fit in the mission, they become committed.” Last, Easton will make a commitment to prioritize caring for one another. “We are going to take care of each other by focusing on resiliency,” he said. “Our Airmen, civilians, spouses…everyone. These are our greatest resources and we have to ensure they are building upon the domains of mental, physical, social, and spiritual fitness which are core to the Comprehensive Airman Fitness program.” Easton will look to showcasing best practices and programs which enhance CAF programs throughout the wings to be incorporated across the MAJCOM. “I’m a firm believer that if you take care of your people, they will take care of the mission,” Easton said. As Easton completed giving insight into his three priorities of readiness, personal and professional development, and caring for one another, he made clear what his USAFEAFAFRICA enlisted force can expect of him during the upcoming years. “I want Airmen to know they can

Social Engineering – Remain Vigilant! Social engineering is a tactic our adversaries can use to gain access to our networks by targeting the users of those networks. “Hacking the human element,” as it is known in the cyber world, is a full-blown threat to the security of Department of Defense computer networks. Two common methods of social engineering attacks are phishing and spear phishing. Phishing is when an attacker pretends to be a legitimate, trustworthy entity and attempts to acquire your personal information, or trick you into open-

ing a malicious link or file. One example of this is when someone receives an email from a financial institution titled “Electronic Funds Transfer Notification” with an attachment called “Pay Receipt.pdf.” Do not open this attachment. Did the email actually come from your bank? Did you ever give the bank your government email address? This is likely a clever attempt to get you to open a malicious file. Spear phishing is when communications are more personalized to the victim. The attacker may use the victim’s name, or appear to be someone known to the victim. An example of this is when you

receive a digitally unsigned email from a trusted friend or supervisor notifying you of an important policy change that requires your immediate attention. The email includes attachments. Be wary…this could be a Spear Phishing attempt! AFMAN 17-1201 directs that emails containing an embedded hyperlink and/or attachment must be digitally signed with a CAC digital signature. If you suspect you are the target of Phishing or Spear Phishing, you should report it by clicking the “Help Desk” icon on your computer desktop which will open the virtual Enterprise Service Desk application. After reporting the threat, delete the

435 CRG Olympics: hurdling obstacles Story and photos by Airman 1st Class Savannah L. Waters 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs A hand stretches ahead again and again, shoving mud past as an Airman pushes his body across the pit, sharp barbed wire catching on his backpack. As exhaustion begins to set in, the sound of the rest of the team pushes him to crawl faster, hoping he is almost through the obstacle. Cheering loudly for their teams, the 435th Contingency

Response Group came together to participate in its first 435 CRG Olympics May 5 on Ramstein. The 435th Air Mobility Squadron, 435th Construction and Training Squadron, 435th Security Forces Squadron, and Detachment 1 each planned an event to challenge the teams to not only compete, but to share with one another what each squadron does every day. “Each squadron came up with an event, giving each of the other competing squadrons the opportunity to learn what the others do and how they do

it,” said Col. Patrick Daley, 435 CRG commander. An obstacle course, Kaiser Sled, and a pallet build were among six events held during the 435 CRG Olympics. At the end of the day it was a team from the 435 CTS who took first place. “The 435 CRG Olympics was a great event that helped to build morale, good camaraderie, and provide training for Airmen across the group,” Daley said. Students at bat: adaptive sports build camaraderie Story and photos by Senior Airman Devin Boyer 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Ramstein and Kaiserslautern middle and high school special-needs students went toe-to-toe in a friendly game of adaptive-sports softball at Donnelly Park, May 4. The Guzzlers, a varsity community softball team, joined the children to build camaraderie and morale between students, their friends and both immediate and military families. “The way we make it adaptive is we have the international Guzzlers team come out and buddy up with the students, and we use either a whiffle or a soft softball to play with,” said Senior Airman Allison Malaska, 86th Medical Operations Squadron aerospace medical technician and event coordinator. Although the game is slightly

altered, the goal is to make the students feel equivalent. “It’s important that we make them feel like they’re no different and part of our community just as much as anyone else,” said Malaska. Col. Brandon Hileman, 86th Airlift Wing vice commander, said adaptive sports builds friendship and camaraderie. “One of our priorities in the 86th is “Forging ready and resilient leaders,” said Hileman. “Through adaptive sports, we continue to forge resilience by building and enriching camaraderie and friendships — amongst both our Airmen and our families. “I’m proud of our team and we are happy that we’ve got this opportunity to help enable our Adaptive Sports program.” The Adaptive Sports program will continue to host events throughout the year.

Alcohol e-CheckUpToGo comes to Ramstein Story and photo by Airman 1st Class Savannah L. Waters 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs How many drinks did you have last weekend? Last week? Is that normal? Ramstein Airmen now have a tool to check if alcohol consumption has become an issue for them or not. The Alcohol e-CheckUpToGo program, designed by university counseling center psychologists from San Diego State University, is an evidencebased, personalized online alcohol intervention that allows Airmen to enter information about their drinking patterns and receive feedback about their use of alcohol. “The Alcohol e-CheckUpToGo program is tailored to the Ramstein Air Base community and available to anyone that wishes to learn more about their alcohol consumption,” said Jan Devitt, 86 AW community support coordinator. This interactive survey takes less than 15 minutes to complete, is selfguided, requires no face-to-face contact time with a counselor or administrator, and is completely anonymous. “Ramstein has a high percentage of young adults that are being introduced to alcohol at a younger age than their Olympics, from page 3

peers in the States,” said Master Sgt. Thomas Seamans, 569th U.S. Forces Police Squadron plans and programs superintendent. “This program allows them to not only identify their alcohol consumption, but also calculate the amount of money they spend per year on alcohol and tobacco products.” The self-assessment provides accurate and detailed information about personal risk patterns, individual level of alcohol tolerance, unique family risk factors, and harm reduction strategies. “A benefit of the program is that it allows individuals to complete the self-assessment without the pressure that may tempt or compel the individual to minimize their true consumption in fear of their career being affected, regardless of the true intent of those trying to help them,” Seamans said. After the information entered is validated and processed, e-CheckUpToGo calculates a number of variables and compares the user’s responses to national and local college norms. Then, personalized feedback is displayed in an easy-to-read format. According to the San Diego State University, the program demonstrated significant reductions in destructive alcohol use among college students in 14 independent, controlled studies.

“As Airmen and Wingmen, it’s our responsibility to look after one another,” Seamans said. “This program could be the first step to helping a friend or co-worker realize they need help through a non-invasive approach.” Whatever the results of an individu-

al’s feedback, the Alcohol e-CheckUpToGo program in no way absolves Airmen of their responsibility to seek help with identifying their personal harmful alcohol consumption habits. Visit http://interwork.sdsu.edu/ echeckup/usa/alc/adult/ramstein to take the self-assessment.

“We are spread all over the continent so the event was a great opportunity to bring everyone together to showcase sportsmanship with some healthy competition, too,” said Senior Master Sgt. Andrew Shone, 435 SFS operations superintendent.

Aircraft metals technology: there when you need them Story and photos by Senior Airman Elizabeth Baker 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Though lives often depend on the missions flying out of Ramstein, all it takes is one broken part to keep a plane from flying. That’s why the 86th Maintenance Squadron Aircraft Metals Technology shop makes sure that if any aircraft on the Ramstein flight line needs parts, they get parts any time, any day. The Aircraft Metals Technology shop employs a skilled group of Airmen, who turn hunks of steel and aluminum into any part or tool the flight line asks for. Their shop is supplied with large, heavy machines and torches designed to mill and weld metal into sturdy, functional aircraft parts and tools. Master Sgt. Joseph Slaughter, 86 MXS Fabrication Flight assistant flight chief, said many times the flight line is not able to simply order products ready-made. “As these airframes age, the availability of spare parts becomes more and more scarce,” Slaughter said. “For example, the B-1B Lancer has no parts manufactured for it anymore. If anything breaks on it, aircraft metals technology is solely responsible for replacing that. We manufacture it from scrap, from a block of metal.” Even if the part is available, Slaughter explained, a product may have to travel half way across the world to get to Ramstein. When lives are on the line, there is no time to wait. “One time there was a C-17 Globemaster III on a medical evacuation mission, ready to go pick up people from the field,” Slaughter said. “We had to manufacture a tool for the

pressure check system so that the aircraft could be repaired and complete its mission.” For reasons like this, aircraft metals technology Airmen are prepared to respond 24 hours a day, seven days a week. According to Slaughter, an Airman may jump out of bed to put on protective glasses and turn a rod of steel into a bolt. He may program the computer numerical control milling machine to form a bar of aluminum into a deck panel door support. He may pull on heavy gloves and a full-face mask, fire up a torch and shower the shop with sparks on the metal insert gas welder. “If these guys weren’t giving me their all, we’d be backlogged,” Slaughter said. One of Slaughter’s skilled Airmen is Staff Sgt. Brandon Didonato, 86 MXS aircraft metals technology technician. “We do a lot,” Didonato said. “We don’t usually say no to a request, so we work pretty hard. When the calls come in, they can pile up. Then you’re working late.” The job requires attention to detail and minute accuracy. Didonato explained that when it comes to machining, a mistake means throwing away the product and starting over. That can mean hours of work are scrapped. “Everything on an aircraft has to be precise to about two- or three-thousandths of an inch,” Didonato said. “If one side of a part is 50-thousandths of an inch too big, it won’t fit. It’s like a jigsaw puzzle.” The Air Force counts on aircraft metals technology to make every part the right length and width. Every

angle has to have a precise measurement, or the plane won’t fly. With all that responsibility riding on their shoulders, the shop has to pull together and work hard. Slaughter said being prepared to come in early and stay late is an important part of what keeps airlift running at Ramstein and when it comes to his shop’s performance, he is impressed all the time. He said it is not just the dedication his Airmen have for the job, it’s the dedication they have for each other. “We have one person who covers standby after hours for a week at a time,” Slaughter said. “It’s easy to go home and let that person stay behind, but that’s not the case with this shop. We’ll stay behind collectively so that person isn’t left behind. He has friends there with him. Sometimes this job

can be really stressful. It can be infuriating and frustrating, but to know that your friends and coworkers are there to help you out makes it more bearable.” Slaughter helps bring perspective to the stress that comes with the job by helping his Airmen realize the impact of their dedication. “A commander that I had a few years ago said it best,” Slaughter said. “‘Every moment that an airplane is not in the air doing its mission, people have the potential to die or get injured. That’s a family member who won’t go home and see their son or daughter or wife again.’ I try to instill that in these guys. It might seem like it’s just another sortie, but you don’t know what that aircraft is going to be supporting. So give it your all. Someday it’s going to be saving someone’s life.”

medically ready is a source of pride and professionalism for our veterinary team. Many of these dogs win our hearts as we provide care to them over the years they serve.” In December 2015, DCE cared for a MWD that was injured in Afghanistan by an improvised explosive device. Both the dog, Rocky, and his handler were injured, and Rocky was evacuated to DCE. “Our team, together with working dog handlers from the Ramstein and Miesau kennels, provided thousands of hours of care to return him to health,” Hansen said. “Ultimately, with our care Rocky was able to regain use of his injured leg, return to his home duty station and recently was medically retired to his injured handler. His case highlighted the depth and breadth of care that we can provide.” In addition to working with MWDs, DCE sees more than 500 pets a month and provides services ranging from wellness examinations to specialty referral care. Wellness-focused care, according to Hansen, is helping to keep pets healthy and free of diseases that could be transmitted to people. “We work to educate owners about the risk of rabies, intestinal parasites, and other diseases that can make pets and people sick.” These appointments, which include: wellness evaluations, routine vaccinations, pet travel guidance/health certificates, and sick pet examination, are made on a space-available basis. Additionally, on a space-available basis, referral or specialty-level care is available to service members’ pets. “We offer advanced medical and surgical diagnosis, testing and treat-

ment on a consultation or referral basis,” Hansen said. “We regularly work with Army Veterinarians across Europe to aid with cases and some of those owners travel with their pets to our hospital for care.” As Pulaski Barracks prepares to close this coming fall, Veterinary Medical Center Europe will eventually leave its current location and move to Miesau Army Depot, about 20 minutes down the road. “Unfortunately, our new hospital that is being built on Miesau Army Depot is not anticipated to be complete until late 2019,” Hansen said. “We have been assured that we can remain in our present facility until our new hospital is complete.” For more information on Dog Center Europe/Veterinary Medical Center Europe, like them on Facebook, https://www.facebook.com/avceur/

Tackling barriers; building relationships Story and photos by Airman 1st Class Alexis C. Schultz AFN Europe It’s late afternoon and the Kaisers lautern women’s rugby team is strewn throughout the field warming up for their Thursday practice. Mouth guards are put in and the game changes from an easy warm up to intense training. The sport has gradually become more popular in the world, especially for female athletes. The Kaiserslautern Military Community has an opportu nity for women to join the movement. “A lot of individuals are timid to come out to rugby because it’s consid ered a rough sport,” said Staff Sgt. Katy Dockery, 1st Combat Communications Squadron material control. “If they give it a chance, not many walk away not in love with it.” The Kaiserslautern women’s rugby team, also known as the TSU Hochspeyer Lady Rogues, consists of U.S. service members, civilians, dependents, and host nation players. The team is comprised of players of all experience levels. The team participates in a league in the southwest region of Germany but has travelled to Portugal, the Netherlands, Ireland and all over Germany to participate in tournaments, allowing the team an opportunity to bond. “This rugby team is my family,” said Tech. Sgt. Mary Morrison, 86th Maintenance Group quality assurance inspector. “We support each other on

the field during play and off the field. We have dinners, gatherings, traditions, and even travel with each other.” Not only has the team given Morrison a rugby family, but it’s also helped her network and make connec tions with coaches from South Africa, Germany, and England. “While playing with this team, you will be playing alongside and against players from multiple nations.” said Morrison. “We integrate with those teams and have built a friendship with them.” Dockery shared that participating in rugby keeps her resilient both mentally and physically. Rugby has helped her relieve stress during tough times and practices are an additional way for her to stay physically fit. “We have quite the tight knit team so it’s always nice to see your rugby family during a stressful week,” said Dockery. “Once a rugger, always a rugger.” Practices take place from 6 to 8 p.m. every Tuesday and Thursday at Kirchstrasse soccer field in Hochspeyer. 4 pork steaks from the neck 2 eggplants 8 tablespoons oil Salt and Pepper to taste 1 can diced tomatoes ½ teaspoon sugar ¼ teaspoon cayenne pepper 2 teaspoon oregano ½ cup fresh ground parmesan Basil leaves for garnish

Preparation

TODAY:

Baked Eggplant with

Pork Steak

Heat diced tomatoes in a pot. Add sugar, cayenne pepper and oregano. Simmer for 25-30 minutes. Preheat oven to 220 degrees Celsius, without convection. Wash eggplant and cut in ½-inch slices. Put oil on both sides with a small brush. Sprinkle with a dash of salt on both sides. Cover a baking sheet with foil. Place eggplant on foil and put in the middle of the oven for 15 minutes. Take out and add tomato mixture. Top with parmesan cheese and return to oven for 15 minutes more. Heat a pan with the remaining oil. Season pork steaks with salt. Roast on both sides in the pan, 5 minutes on both sides. Season them with pepper at this point. Put them in the oven to allow them to rest a bit, approximately 3-4 minutes. Put ¼ cup red wine and ¼ cup water in the pan where the steaks roasted. Stir to get all flavors out of the pan. Let it reduce a bit. Season to your own taste, perhaps a bit of cayenne pepper. You have a nice sauce to add to your meat as you plate. A nice garlic butter baguette would make a lovely finish to this meal. Love our recipes? Let us hear about it! 721 AMXS goes wheels up for C-5 maintenance Story and photos by Senior Airman Tryphena Mayhugh 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Normally when a C-5M Galaxy is off the ground, it is soaring thousands of feet above the world. For one particular C-5 flying out of Travis Air Force Base, Calif., that was not the case when a malfunctioning landing gear caused it to be raised only a few feet above the ground inside a hangar. “We were coming down to land, the pilots threw the gear down and the number four main landing gear did not extend, so they had to emergency extend it,” said Staff Sgt. Cesar Mardirossian, 60th Aircraft Maintenance Squadron flying crew chief. “We were able to land safely and we had to jack the aircraft.” Mardirossian worked alongside Airmen assigned to the 721 AMXS to jack, inspect, and repair the aircraft’s landing gear. “When it came down, we towed it onto its spot to make sure everything

was still good,” said Staff Sgt. Brian Crea, 721 AMXS airlift specialist mission maintenance craftsman. “We got it outside the hangar, did our inspection on it to make sure everything was good, and prepared everything to tow it into the hangar and jack it up.” The C-5 required six fuselage jacks to hold it, two in the nose, two in the middle, and two in the aft. Each jack is capable of holding 60 tons, over all providing support for 720,000 pounds. A typical C-5 weighs 415,000 pounds, but six jacks were used for stability. Upon inspection, the 721 AMXS and 60 AMXS Airmen determined the landing gear needed a new handle. They installed it and proceeded to perform a function check on every gear. For a C-5, the nose landing gear is allowed 20 seconds each to extend and retract, while the remaining four gears are allowed 22 seconds to extend and 17 to contract. “Primarily we were concerned about the number four gear, but because it’s a new handle we are required to do a gear swing in every single gear,” Crea

A C-5M Galaxy aircraft rests on six fuselage jacks for main landing gear repair May 3 on Ramstein. Flying out of Travis Air Force Base, Calif., to Ramstein, the aircraft’s number four main landing gear malfunctioned, and the crew had to use the emergency backup system to make a safe landing. Airmen assigned to the 721st Aircraft Maintenance Squadron and 60 AMXS jacked the aircraft to repair it.

Staff Sgt. Cesar Mardirossian, 60th Aircraft Maintenance Squadron flying crew chief, inspects the landing gear of a C-5M Galaxy May 3 on Ramstein. When landing at Ramstein, the number four main landing gear of the aircraft did not lower until the crew used the emergency backup system and were able to make a safe landing. Airmen assigned to the 721 AMXS and 60 AMXS raised the aircraft on six fuselage jacks to inspect and repair the landing gear.

said. “Because it’s a C-5, we’re only supposed to do one gear at a time for safety purposes. We swung the gears and everything checked out. They met all the time limits.” The next step was to check the caster function, which allows gears to turn left or right, for the nose and aft gears. They turned the nose gear to extreme left and right, and the two back gears were turned left, centerand right simultaneously and individually to ensure they could reach the required 20 degrees. “They came to center. They castered. Everything was good, and they worked in unison. Nothing was stuttering,” Crea said. “Up to this point, we have no reason to believe the aircraft is not serviceable anymore.” It has been over a year since the 721 AMXS has had a C-5 raised on

a full fuselage jack. “It’s always amazing to see the things we do,” Crea said. “We lifted this huge aircraft off the ground, and now we’re going to swing the gears and everything is going to shake, and it’s going to stay up. “It was a great experience,” he continued. “This was my second gear swing on my own, so I was a little nervous, but I was also confident and I had good training. I have very good mentors. We ran through a lot of stuff with a lot of good people, so I was comfortable with the task we were doing.” Through the combined experience of the pilots, flying crew chief, and maintainers from Travis and Ramstein, they were able to make a safe landing and tow, jack, inspect, and repair a C-5’s malfunctioned landing gear together.

Reflect on Mother’s Day at the zoo

Kaiserslautern Evangelical

Lutheran Church 8:30 am Worship & Holy Communion

by Petra Lessoing 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Sunday, KaiserslauternSiegelbach Zoo will grant mothers free entry and give them a coupon for free coffee and cake in its restaurant. They do this since Sunday is Mother’s Day and an official day to honor mothers throughout the world. In many countries, children pamper their mothers the second Sunday in May. They make breakfast, give flowers, cards and gifts, and behave well all day long. The history of Mother’s Day dates back to 1907, when Anne Jarvis from Philadelphia, exactly one year after her mother died, had the idea to choose a day to thank mothers all over the world for all their love and unselfish care. The idea became real one year later. As the first town in world, Philadelphia celebrated Mother’s Day on May 10, 1908. Six years later, President Woodrow Wilson officially proclaimed the second Sunday in May as Mother’s Day. In the following years Mother’s Day became popular in India, China, Mexico, Scandinavia, England and Switzerland. The first Mother’s Day in Germany was celebrated in 1933.

King Arthur: Legend of the Sword (PG-13) This film is an iconoclastic take on the classic Excalibur myth, tracing Arthur’s journey from the streets to the throne. When the child Arthur’s father is murdered, Vortigern, Arthur’s uncle, seizes the crown. Robbed of his birthright and with no idea who he truly is, Arthur comes up the hard way in the back alleys of the city. But once he pulls the sword from the stone, his life is turned upside down and he is forced to acknowledge his true legacy...whether he likes it or not. Starring: Charlie Hunnam, Annabelle Wallis, Aidan Gillen, Eric Bana, Jude Law

The Wall (R) “The Wall” is a deadly psychological thriller that follows two soldiers pinned down by an Iraqi sniper, with nothing but a crumbling wall between them. Their fight becomes as much a battle of will and wits as it is of lethally accurate marksmanship. Starring: Aaron Taylor-Johnson, John Cena

The Zookeeper’s Wife (PG-13) The real-life story of one working wife and mother who became a hero to hundreds during World War II. In 1939 Poland, Antonina Zabinska and her husband, Dr. Jan Zabinski, have the Warsaw Zoo flourishing under his stewardship and her care. When their country is invaded by the Nazis, Jan and Antonina are stunned — and forced to report to the Reich’s newly appointed chief zoologist, Lutz Heck. To fight back on their own terms, Antonina and Jan covertly begin working with the Resistance — and put into action plans to save lives out of what has become the Warsaw Ghetto, with Antonina putting herself and even her children at great risk. Starring: Jessica Chastain, Johan Heldenbergh, Michael McElhatton, Iddo Goldberg
