Team Ramstein completes fully integrated evacuation exercise by Staff Sgt. Travis Edwards 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs More than 70 Airmen were on hand May 3 to test Team Ramstein’s ability to evacuate noncombatants from a mock conflicted area.
Service members from the 86th and 786th Force Support Squadron, 435th Contingency Response Group and the 1st Combat Communications Squadron all played a part in processing, screening and providing security and transport for the members roleplaying as evacuees in a non-
combatant evacuation operation exercise. The exercise helped base agencies prepare in the event that U.S. citizens need to be evacuated from foreign countries. “We went from a bare base to fully operational in six hours,” said Capt. Chris Price,
435th CRG Contingency Response Element director of operations. The exercise allows Team Ramstein to practice the Air Force’s role in evacuating personnel in a controlled environment. “The last time Ramstein participated in a NEO exer-

SCHWEINFURT, Germany — “All but war is training, and everything that everyone in the military does requires training,” said Sgt. Maj. John Buchanan, the 21st Theater Sustainment Command’s assistant chief of staff for operations, training and exercise sergeant major. The 21st TSC is headquartered in Kaiserslautern. Soldiers stationed around Europe were subjects of intense training during the 21st Theater Sustainment Commandorganized and sponsored Pathfinder Course, held April 16 to May 3 at the Camp Robertson training area here. The course was organized to ensure Soldiers in units and positions that require pathfinder skills would receive the necessary training. Of the 60 Soldiers selected to attend, 22 made it to graduation. “Pathfinder is one of the most challenging and mentally straining courses that the Army has,” said Buchanan, a native of Springfield, Ill. “It’s very tough; the washout rate is somewhere around 50 or 60 percent, so Soldiers have to be mentally ready for the challenge.” Army Pathfinders are Soldiers who are trained to provide navigational aid and advisory services to military aircraft in areas designated by supported unit commanders. Their secondary mission includes providing advice and limited aid to units planning air assault or airdrop operations. During the Pathfinder Course, students are instructed in air-

It’s your move, Ramstein by 86th Logistics Readiness Squadron
Commentary
W
ith the “peak season” for permanent-change-of-station moves almost upon us, the 86th Logistics Readiness Squadron offers the second installment of its PCS 101 series to assist members with making their travel arrangements. LRS professionals re-committed to making every PCS move a better experience for service members, Department of Defense civilians and their families assigned to Ramstein. Brian Muller, the KMC Transportation Officer, said, “Early planning is key.” His team at the Passenger Section/ Commercial Ticket Office books tickets for all official PCS or TDY travel. The staff, consisting of Airmen, host nation employees and contractors totals just 11 people, but they issued 8,000 port call seat tickets, booked 2,800 pet spaces and distributed 28,000 commercial airline tickets in 2011. Master Sgt. Lisa Boston, 86th LRS, leads the passenger section, and her staff is determined to meet your travel requirements throughout the peak rotational season. Located on Ramstein in the same building as the housing office, passengers can walk in from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday, Wednesday and Friday. They can also call them with questions or for assistance on any week-
day, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., at 480-5373. However, for most of your PCS travel requirements, the interaction with the passenger section is included as part of your outbound assignment process. Outbound assignments in the Force Support Squadron will give members a port call worksheet to complete and identify a 10-day window for travelling. Outbound assignments will send the completed request to the passenger section where the travel will be booked and confirmation sent back to outbound assignments. Travelers will receive notification from outbound assignments finalizing their information on their port call flights. There are many challenges associated with passenger travel in conjunction with a PCS move. A great resource to get all your PCS questions answered is the once a month “ABC’s of PCSing” briefing hosted by the Airman & Family Readiness Center at the Hercules Theater. The passenger travel section conducts a briefing and hosts a Q&A as a part of this program. “The most misunderstood part of PCS travel booking is the order of precedence,” Muller said. The Defense Transportation Regulation directs the means by which passengers may be moved to meet their PCS requirements. For most members, Air Mobility Commandprocured channel airlift (like the Patriot
Express operated from the Ramstein Passenger Terminal) must be used in connection with international travel. Exceptions can be made for the travel precedent, but must be requested by the unit commander and include a clear explanation of the negative mission impact for consideration by the transportation officer. Traveling with pets continues to be a challenge for PCSing families. Service members are responsible for all expenses related to the pet shipment and must comply with the carrier regulations. They must also ensure entry and health requirements are met prior to pet shipment. Space on AMC flights is limited and each family is limited to two pets per family on Patriot Express flights. The passenger section will assist with scheduling pets on AMC airlift if there are pet spaces available, but if not, the traveler will be responsible for shipping their pets with a commercial carrier. Non-availability of pet space on AMC airlift does not automatically exempt passengers from the order of precedence for airlift. However, due to an unexpected surge in PCS travel this summer, Muller said his team has been given some latitude to seek commercial travel alternatives on a case-by-case basis. According to the passenger section, a successful PCS is based on planning in advance and contacting our professionals early to confirm your travel arrangements.

KMC commander provides child safety updates by Senior Airman Katherine Holt 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs At recent joint town halls addressing child safety on military installations, Lt. Gen. Craig Franklin, KMC and 3rd Air Force commander, pledged to keep the community updated on the status of ongoing investigations as well as general military installation security. A list of KMC resident-recommended items were compiled from the town halls and the list of completed items is now released to the public. “This is still the most important issue on my agenda,” Franklin said. “I promised to keep you informed of our actions, and we have quickly found solutions for a majority of the recommendations.” Since the town halls convened on May 1 and 2, a list of tasks have already been completed, including two Air Force Lunch and Learn sessions for parents and U.S. Army Garrison Kaiserslautern community service and family advocacy programs that brief parents on all aspects of child safety. Additionally, the 86th Force Support Squadron shared information regarding licensing of child care providers off and on base and provided two classes ORE, from Page 1

Swimming facilities open
The Gelterswoog pond opened for public swimming Tuesday. The facility hours are from noon to 8 p.m. Mondays, and 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. all other days. The outdoor pools in Alsenborn, Bruchmühlbach-Miesau, as well as the Azur in Ramstein, are now open. The heated public pool on Entersweilerstrasse, Warmfreiband, and the Landstuhl nature adventure pool are scheduled to open Tuesday. The nature pool in Otterberg won’t open until May 25.

Evaluators bring different perspective to exercise by Airman 1st Class Trevor Rhynes 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs
W
ith the exercise about to wrap up, Airmen with the exercise evaluation teams are making sure their units get the most out of their training. EETs are established prior to exercises to ensure Airmen within their groups are performing up to standards. They evaluate positives and negatives throughout exercises that can be used to improve the group as a whole. “EETs are critical components of the exercise process, they’ve been selected by their respective groups to be the subject matter expert for that group,” said Master Sgt. Nathan Davis, readiness and inspections planning. “At a minimum, they’re able to contact those within the group to establish criteria to the exercise that will be most beneficial to the group that they come from.” Members of the evaluation team are involved in planning exercises from
start to finish. “During the concept portion, they are there to establish what the needs of the group are,” Davis said. “Through the planning, they are there to work out all logistical necessities for their respective group.” During the execution phase all the prep work is incorporated into the large wing exercise that it becomes, he said. “Everyone works in concert with each other to evaluate the exercise as it pertains to their individual group,” he said. The 86th AW inspection and readiness office takes lead on the exercise and coordinates between all of the various EETs of all six groups including the wing staff agency. “We expect to see basic readiness functions exercised, things like air or ground attacks that you would typically see in an exercise environment,” Davis said. “We hope units get the most out of training that they can, to learn from this experience and build on it for the next exercise or deployment.”

craft orientation, aeromedical evacuation, close combat assault, ground to air communication procedures, control center operations, three phases of sling load operations, helicopter landing zone and pick-up zone operations and drop zone operations. The sling load portion of the course is the only hands-on test in which students are tested on four of six loads taught. They must identify three out of four preparations and/ or rigging deficiencies within two minutes per load to be successful. Statistically, most students fail this portion. “Obviously, we strive to have a 100 percent pass rate but unfortunately that’s just not the case,” said Sgt. 1st Class Charles A. Newman, a sling load instructor and operations non-commissioned officer for the Pathfinder School. “We fail the majority of personnel on the sling load operation portion of the course.”
In addition to 21st TSC units, Soldiers assigned to the 12th Cavalry Regiment, the Joint Multinational Training Command and the 173rd Infantry Brigade also attended. “Pathfinder School is very difficult, but if you apply yourself you will make it,” said Sgt. Abdul M. Shuford, an allied trades specialist with the 391st Combat Sustainment Support Battalion. “It is more on the technical side than other schools. You have more formulas, rules, regulations and specifics. To be safe you have to know a lot of things like drop zone altitudes, speeds and hookup procedures.” In order for Soldiers to be selected to attend the Pathfinder Course, they had to either maintain or be projected for assignment to a pathfinder slot. “Any time we can help enhance our Soldiers and give them the additional tools and skills needed to help them better prepare for the mission, then it’s always a satisfaction for the command and the leadership,” Buchanan said.

They finished on the other side, tagged, screened and ready to board the mock aircraft (bus) destined for a safe haven away from the “conflict.” “Amidst all the different scenarios, the Airmen of all the units pulled together to make it possible,” said Price. The Airmen were brainstorming on the spot and using critical thinking to find solutions to the challenges presented. The scenarios challenged Airmen by providing real-world contingencies like injuries, intoxications and other unexpected human factors. “(The processing line) handled everything great and the setup was well organized for the time they had to put it together,” said Senior Airman Richard Spurgeon, who played an intoxicated evacuee.

435th SFS takes best Security Forces Unit Award by Master Sgt. Jim Fisher USAFE Public Affairs When 435th Security Forces Squadron Commander Maj. Jason Medsger passes the flag to Capt. Matt Garvelink in a change of command ceremony today on Sembach Kaserne, he will be going out on a high note. Medsger and his defenders were recently named the Air Force’s best Security Forces Unit (Small Unit Category) for 2011. The 435th SFS provides rapidly deployable, multifunctional expeditionary security forces to open airbases, usually in the context of contingency operations. They also serve as the sole regional training center for security forces in Europe. And while this mandates that they have an exceptionally diversified unit in terms of AFSCs, which Medsger called a distinguishing factor in the award, he said it ultimately comes down to quality. “We have 12 AFSCs performing missions across three combatant commands. Of course, the bottom line is the people, and we’ve been fortunate to have the very best here,” Medsger said. “Being the sole regional training center in Europe is a unique responsi-
bility. That means we bring in the best from across the command, and we get to learn from them while preparing them for deployment.” In this process of preparing security forces to deploy, the unit excelled in several key areas, said Senior Master Sgt. Dave Wolfe, 435th Security Forces manager. “We had the premier combat arms training operation with our heavy weapons live-fire course,” Wolfe said. “We also ran USAFE’s only Raven program with 183 sorties last year, orchestrated the security component of Exercise Thracian Spring in Bulgaria and our program to send students to elite training courses put 40 Airmen in air assault, sniper, active shooter and ranger programs. We are all about providing our students and COCOM commanders with the specialized training and skill sets they need for everything from operating in a bare-base environment to conducting secure operations in hostile areas. The accomplishments in the awards package are a reflection of a truly special mix of professionals taking on an important mission for the command.” Medsger said in addition to the satisfaction of being part of the unit’s over-

Success of Patriot battery rotations Soldiers train to Poland attributed to 10th AAMDC by 2nd Lt. Jean P. Tomte 10th AAMDC Public Affairs In August 2008, the U.S. and the Republic of Poland signed a declaration of strategic cooperation to strengthen missile defense and strategic partnership. The two nations concurred that a bilateral relationship will be beneficial; thus, they agreed with the expansion of a joint air and missile defense cooperation. A rotational deployment was established exclusively for training and exercise. Many Soldiers have gained knowledge through this rotational deployment that takes place in Torun, Ustka and Morag, Poland. The planning conference was held in Warsaw and so far, nine rotations are complete. U.S. Army Europe is the lead component and rotates one patriot battery to Poland for no less than 30 days every quarter. The success of these rotations has been attributed to the commitment of U.S. Army Patriot Air and Missile Defense Command Soldiers stationed in Kaiserslautern. In addition, this success has played an essential role in enhancing U.S.-Polish cooperation and strengthening the strategic partnership of both nations. “It is important for our Soldiers to work with
Soldiers from other countries, especially NATO partners,” said Capt. Michael Unbehauen, the action officer for P2P. “I was amazed to see how well the Polish military tried everything to accommodate us and how well we were received in Poland.” With these rotations, the Soldiers from the 10th Air and Missile Defense Command and the Polish air force have demonstrated a strong commitment and the willingness to share their experiences. During the rotation, Soldiers from both nations expand their relationship through training such as partnership ranges, soccer games and social events. The partnership range gives both the opportunity to familiarize themselves with U.S weapons (M16A2, M249 and M9) and Polish weapons (UZI, PKR, and AK 47). “I have grown as a Soldier by experiencing cooperative training with the Polish military,” said Pvt. 1st Class Francisco Flores, a tactical control assistant with Alpha Battery 5-7 Air Defense Artillery. When asked what was surprising about the assignment, Flores said, “The eagerness of the Polish to learn our Patriot equipment.” The 10th AAMDC is training select Polish air force personnel on Patriot equipment and familiarizing them with U.S. training and operation methods to improve operational familiarity to further U.S.Polish air and missile defense cooperation.

oldiers of the 212th Combat Support Hospital trained medical logistics to improve their ability to deploy within hours of notification during Operation Forward Progress April 19 to May 3 in Miesau. “We’re focusing on the mobility of the unit and their ability to conduct an emergency deployment readiness exercise,” said Col. Ann Sammartino, commander of the 212th Combat Support Hospital. Just days after assuming command of 30th Medical Command — the higher headquarters of the 212th CSH — Col. Koji Nishimura, along with Command Sgt. Maj. Alexis King, visited Miesau. He met the Soldiers, toured the facilities, climbed into the vehicles, and witnessed the work of Operation Forward Progress as part of his introduction to the unit. “The 212th CSH Team is creating the environment for Soldiers and families to take care of each other, do the right thing and strive for world-record performance — our command philosophy for innovation and discipline in the future,” Nishimura said. The head nurse of the intermediate care ward, Capt. Laurette Mangan, walked the commander and command sergeant major through the unit warehouse. She explained how each section developed electronic inventory lists and vehicle load plans for all of the hospital’s supplies and equipment, pointing to aisles filled with color-coded containers perfectly lined up on shelves in cages for each section of the hospital. “When there is a product that is going to expire soon, we have records of that on the computer. We now know exactly which box it is located in, in order to replace it,” Mangan said. “I am very proud of the Soldiers, NCOs and officers that all went above and beyond my expectations during this exercise and truly set the standard of world-record performance,” Sammartino said. The 30th MEDCOM, headquartered in Heidelberg, is the enabling medical command asset for the European Command theater of operations. Its Soldiers provide medical support for combat, humanitarian assistance and training missions for U.S. European Command, U.S. Army Europe, U.S. Africa Command, U.S. Central Command, and operations New Dawn, Enduring Freedom and Kosovo Force. Col. Barbara Holcomb assumed command of Landstuhl Regional Medical Center during a May 3 ceremony that also honored the service of outgoing commander Col. Jeffrey Clark. “This is indeed an honor,” Holcomb said. “I’m deeply humbled by the tremendous opportunity to serve as a commander once again, especially at a medical center with the incredible reputation held by Landstuhl.” That reputation was quickly recognized by one of the first people Holcomb shared the good news with about her new assignment. Along with his congratulations, a fellow Soldier at Human Resources Command at Fort Knox, Ky., told her, “Landstuhl is such an awesome place. Nadja West as commanding general of Europe Regional Medical Command and command surgeon for U.S. Army Europe. Clark, who has been nominated for promotion to brigadier general, focused on patientcentered health care during his tenure at LRMC. But it was feedback not from a patient he chose to highlight during his speech, but from the mother of two potential patients – her sons deployed to Afghanistan. The mother, a Canadian warrant officer departing LRMC after serving a six-month tour as a personnelist, shared her observation of the LRMC staff with Clark. “What LRMC does is provide comfort for mothers like me, for I know that if one of my sons is sick or wounded, he will come to Landstuhl.” LRMC is the largest American hospital outside of the U.S. and the only American tertiary hospital in Europe. LRMC provides primary care, tertiary care, hospitalization and treatment for more than 245,000 U.S. military personnel and their families within European Command. LRMC is also the evacuation and treatment center for all injured U.S. service members and civilians serving in Afghanistan and Iraq.

hat do you get when you cross “Iron Chef” with “Family Feud?” You get the first All European Culinary Fair — a newly developed competition that allows teams of two to four high school students from across Department of Defense Education ActivityEurope to show off their culinary skills. This year’s competition took place from Tuesday to Thursday at Sembach Middle School. In prior years, Department of Defense Dependents Schools-Europe hosted a technology fair that included a culinary competition; however, this event was canceled. So, the idea of the competition originated when Faye Batey, a career and technical education coordinator, wanted to provide DODEA-E students with another means to showcase their gastronomic talents. The event was also organized by Judith Fulsom, Larry Prine and Marsha Webster. The Culinary Faire is based on the the ProStart Competition that students in the U.S. participate in and which the curriculum for the DODDS-E high school culinary classes are based on. “This event gives our students the opportunity to show their skills and compete much like the stateside students,” Batey said. “However, the rules had to be modified a bit due to the unique circumstances of our students in Europe.” The competition featured the creation of a three course meal, including a starter, entree and dessert. The meal had to be based on three core
ingredients: rice, broccoli and chicken, which had to be used at least once during the competition. Teams were also allowed to pre-request several other ingredients for their use during the competition. Additionally, competitors had access to hand tools and two electric burners. Competitors were judged on a rubric-based point system, which highlighted originality, technical skill, methods and presentation. Families list retirement, pay as top issues by Lisa Daniel American Forces Press Service WASHINGTON — Military families regard the possible change of military retirement benefits as their top concern, according to the results of a major survey released today. The 2012 Military Family Lifestyle Survey also shows that pay and benefits, the impact of deployments on children, operational tempo, spouse employment and education and combat stress and brain injuries are most on the minds of military family members. Blue Star Families, a nonprofit military family support organization, released the findings of its third annual survey before a Capitol Hill audience of Congress members, military family members and support organizations, and media. “That data in this survey is the story of our lives,” said Kathy RothDouquet, the chief executive officer of Blue Star Families. The survey, she said, is conducted by professional researchers who also are military family members. More than 4,000 family members
responded to the survey, representing each of the services — active, National Guard and Reserve, and Coast Guard — and all areas of the country. Nearly half of the survey respondents have a service member in the senior enlisted ranks, and 64 percent of respondents are between the ages of 25 and 44. Among the findings: » Thirty-one percent of respondents listed possible changes to retirement benefits as their biggest concern, followed by 20 percent who cited pay and benefits as their top concern; » Veterans said their biggest concerns related to separating from the military were employment opportunities, followed by access to health care; » Seven percent of respondents listed operational tempo as their top concern, and support for staying in the military dropped from 52 percent for families who were separated 13 to 24 months, to 15 percent for those who spent more than 37 months apart; » Sixty percent of spouse respondents are not currently employed, and of those, 53 percent wanted to be; 57 percent said being a military spouse has a negative impact on their ability to work; 27 percent had problems get-
ting professional licenses to transfer to different states; » Six percent of respondents listed post-traumatic stress, combat stress and traumatic brain injuries as their top issue; 26 percent said their service member had signs of post-traumatic stress and 3 percent said they had a diagnosis. Robert L. Gordon III, deputy assistant secretary of defense for military community and family policy, said the department and the nation are challenged by economic problems today, but that both must take care of military families. Things changed after the Vietnam War, Gordon said. “We got out of Vietnam and into the all-volunteer force,” he said. “Because of that, our force became a married force.” Also, Gordon said, the military now is structured so that “the entire military goes to war.” Indeed, the survey found that National Guard and Reserve members have spent as much time away from home in the past decade as active duty members. “We’re challenged today, and I would say we are up to that chal-
lenge,” Gordon said. “We have a supportive Congress and a supportive administration, where the first lady and Dr. (Jill) Biden are out pitching for the military” through their “Joining Forces” campaign. “That’s why this survey is so important,” he said. “We need to know how these families feel. Throughout April, Family Advocacy, a branch of Army Community Service, went throughout the community setting up outreach tables and having events, such as free bowling and movie ticket giveaways, in an effort to get information about child abuse and prevention practices out to the military community. The final event is one that will be talked about for many years, espe-

cially for the children. The final event was a Fairy Tale Ball, which took place April 27 at Armstrong’s Club on Vogelweh. Every participant was given a bag full of information, hand outs and pins to wear that celebrate child abuse prevention and empowered them with knowledge on how each of them can make a real difference in the lives of those around them. Not only did the participants get this valuable information, they were able to celebrate life and share laughs. Almost every child and many parents came in a costume, dressed as their favorite fairy tale character. The children were able to participate in games such as limbo, dance
across the ball floor, have a glass of sparkling juice, eat a yummy treat, and make wishes by tossing coins into a magical pond. One family’s response to the event was: “The Doyle family would like to thank everyone who helped with the Fairy Tale Ball. From the planners, to the food, to the decorations, to the friendly staff, to the set up and tear down crew -- each and every one of you deserve a round of applause. Our princess Rapunzel and her daddy had their first date and you all helped make that a success. Thank you.” There were many other stories like this but the most important story couldn’t be

Rwanda to benefit from Army library books Story and photo by Rick Scavetta U.S. Army Garrison Kaiserslautern Books from the Miesau Army Depot library will soon be helping Rwandans learn English, thanks in part to a retired U.S. Army officer and his wife. Miesau’s books will have a new home at the Saint Joseph Integrated Technical College in Rwanda’s capital, Kigali, said Tom Martin, a retired signal corps officer, who coordinated the effort with his wife Margret. Students and the local community will be able to check out books, he said. “It’s an opportunity to help people learn the English language,” Martin said. “This will be another resource.” On a rainy April morning, the Martins joined several German friends to clear shelves and pack hundreds of books into shipping boxes. Local German news reporters photographed and interviewed them as they worked. In a nearby field kitchen, Spc. Enock Guto, 28, a cook with the 212th Combat Support Hospital, dished out breakfast to troops as Martin and his friends began packing library books. Originally from Nairobi, Kenya, Guto said people in Africa often can’t afford to buy books despite their need to know the language. “It’s setting a good example (and) helping Africans,” Guto said. “Most of them don’t have books. I think it’s a good idea and I think it will help.” For nearly 30 years, the German state of Rhineland Palatinate – where U.S. Army Garrison Kaiserslautern and Ramstein are located – has had a partnership with Rwanda. Rwandan’s native language is Kinyarwanda, but since colonial times they learned French. During the 1994 genocide, Rwanda’s people suffered heavily. Since then, the country underwent significant development efforts, including adopting English as a new official language. In 2008, English

replaced French in Rwandan schools. Under Army regulations, books from closing libraries are first offered to other military libraries, said Stacey Graham, IMCOM Europe Region librarian. Then, charitable organizations are asked as an alternative to simply discarding items. Working through the U.S. State Department, the library books were offered to the German non-profit organization dedicated to the local partnership with Rwanda. “These materials have passed through hundreds of hands: Soldiers, civilians, local nationals, children and adults,” Graham said. “To see that there’s an opportunity for these resources to be used again, that’s very worthy. That’s a good cause.”
After retiring, Martin settled in Heppenheim, near Heidelberg. Two years ago, when a German friend explained Rwanda’s need of English books, Martin made a few calls. In August 2010, they moved 16,000 library books from the former U.S. Air Force library in Sembach to Gitarama – a city in central Rwanda. Martin and his wife, a trained librarian, then travelled to Gitarama, where they helped organize the library and install computer software to track book loans. The Sembach library is now the largest English language library in Rwanda, Martin said. “We were very happy to see the students using the books,” Martin said. “It’s very rewarding.”
Ramstein to hold Passport Outreach Day Wednesday

ermans observe a religious holiday Thursday called “Christi Himmelfahrt,” or Ascension Day. The Bible says Christ’s ascent into heaven took place on the 40th day after Easter, which is why it’s always held on a Thursday.
First, Christians celebrated the fest together with Pentecost. Later, in the fourth century, it was observed as a holiday of its own. Besides celebrating the church fest, Germans also recognize Father’s Day on Ascension Day. For years, it was customary for men, young and old, fathers and non-fathers, to meet and have fun together.
They went for long walks, and to quench their thirst, they took along a decorated handcart filled with beer cases or kegs. A partial origin of that day of men dates back to the German forefathers, who in springtime walked through their land and fields and asked the gods for a fertile year. Afterward, they had a drink together. Today, the holiday is an
additional day when families can do something together. They go on bike trips, hikes or have barbecues. Since Ascension Day is also an official holiday in Germany, stores, public institutions and banks will be closed. Several communities in the KMC will sponsor festivals for the whole family. The Alsenborn Entertaining
Association will hold a Father’s Day get-together starting at 10 a.m. in the yard of the old school. In Bann, the local gun club will have a Father’s Day barbecue at their club house. Then the students all got up and danced to the vegetable orchestra, followed shortly by Murthy. “It’s more fun as a teacher when you can get up and dance around the room and the children get up with you,” she said. “There is so much pure joy in the small children.” The green project hit home with all the children as well, because when asked about how each of them help out the Earth, they all echoed “picking up trash.”

Commentary by Joanne Coley 786th Force Support Squadron (Editor’s note: Sunday is Mother’s Day and one of our readers has offered to share memories of her mother.)
L
ong before President John F. Kennedy challenged a generation of Americans with the inspiring words, “Ask not what your country can do for you — ask what you can do for your country,” Elizabeth, my mother, had been asking and living that challenge for years. As a military wife, she was always ready to provide support, wisdom and courage to her husband and her children. My mom, affectionately known as “Bootsie” to her family and friends, lived life to the fullest and on her terms. Her selflessness and giving was

played out through her travels around the world. She was a true ambassador, demonstrating peace and goodwill long before JFK established the Peace Corps. As I grew up, I would see my mother volunteer her time and talents to various missions, such as the post chapel, the youth center, our neighbors and our schools. Volunteering for her was more than just a civic duty — to her it was not about recognition or popularity, it was about personal responsibility. At 17 years old I learned about personal responsibility first hand from Bootsie. I had campaigned vigorously for class president and lost. I remember coming home and feeling jealous, vowing not to help the winning classmate or support his student council. My mother, overhearing my declaration, looked at me and asked why I wouldn’t help the newly elected presi-
dent, knowing that he would need help with the class politics and student activities. I responded that I wasn’t about to lift a finger to help him. My mother subtly replied, “Well, I guess you never really wanted to help your class after all.” Thinking about her comment made me question my motives on why I wanted to run for class president in the first place. I felt guilty and ashamed. Her words kept haunting me: “Well, I guess you really didn’t want to help your class after all.” Try as I might, I could not stop thinking about my mother’s words. I thought about all the times she had encouraged me to challenge myself and to be the best at anything that came my way. After some deep soul searching, I gathered up the courage to congratulate our new class president, letting him know that I was available to assist him. That school year was the begin-

ning of many years that are based on two concepts my mother taught me: one, “winners are not hampered by defeats,” and, most importantly, two, “words are to be backed up with action.” Even though my mother has passed away, the lessons she taught me still resonate in my heart and flourish in my deeds — that service to others is not just an outward expression, but an opportunity for goodwill. One of the greatest traits we Americans have is our ability to give. Our service to others should not be for shallow personal gain or popularity, but for the deeper meaning of personal responsibility. My mother embodied President Kennedy’s inspiring words — “Ask not what your country can do for you — ask what you can do for your country” — every single day of her life. And that is something we all should aspire to.
by Petra Lessoing 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Sunday is the day when children pamper their mothers. They make breakfast, give gifts of flowers and cards, and behave well all day long. The second Sunday in May is Mother’s Day in almost every country of the world. The history of Mother’s Day dates back to 1907, when Anne Jarvis from Philadelphia, exactly one year after her mother died, had the idea to choose a day to thank mothers all over the world for all their love and unselfish care. The idea became real one year later. As the first city in the world, Philadelphia celebrated Mother’s Day on May 10, 1908. Six years later, President Woodrow Wilson officially proclaimed the second Sunday in May as Mother’s Day. In the following years, Mother’s Day became popular in India, China, Mexico, Scandinavia, England and Switzerland. The first Mother’s Day in Germany was celebrated in 1933. In the initial years in Germany, mothers were not honored for their devoted work but were rewarded for the many children they had. In 1938, Adolf Hitler awarded mothers with the “mother’s cross” to honor their outstanding help against low birth rates and death. Each year in August, on the birthday of Hitler’s mother, he gave the bronze medal to mothers with four children, the silver medal to mothers with six and the gold medal to mothers with eight children. After the war, it took a while until Germans started celebrating Mother’s Day again. People still had terrible memories of the past, as well as the current miserable situation on their minds; they didn’t feel like calling special attention to mothers on one specific day only. Mothers should be recognized every day.

Ramstein learning to ‘Live Green’ by Darlene Johnson Ramstein Community Center director
T
he Ramstein and Vogelweh community centers are promoting “Live Green.” The Air Force Live Green program is an annual community center installation program. The Live Green program promotes community cohesion and provides opportunities for community members to interact with others and provide recreational opportunities to help increase awareness of the community’s actions on the environment and community. The Ramstein and Vogelweh community centers have several Live
Green events planned. At 9 a.m. Saturday, there will be a Live Green Community Cleanup Day. The cleanup is part of the Air Force Live Green program, which falls under the CC Trademark Event, Give the World a Hand. Give the World a Hand programs are designed to increase the awareness of the community’s actions on the environment and give them ways to help. Volunteers who would like to participate in the cleanup can sign-up at the Ramstein Community Center. Call 480-6600 or 06371-47-6600 for details. Our target area of cleanup will be located off base near Ramstein
Village. Trash bags and gloves will be provided as well as bottled water. The first 20 volunteers who sign-up will receive a Live Green T-shirt. We also have a special Live Green Family Night from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Monday at the Ramstein Community Center. There will be a special visit from our “costumed character” Kermit The Frog and lots of fun crafts, games, bouncy castle, inflatable maze, face painting, balloons and fun ways to learn how to reduce, reuse and recycle. At 10 a.m. June 9, the Vogelweh Community Center will be doing a cleanup of the Kinder Graves at the Kaiserslautern Cemetery. The cemetery holds 450 graves of American
