From dream to reality

Airlift Wing Public Affairs

Many people have dreamed of doing something unique with their life. Maybe they dreamed of becoming an athlete, an actor, a model or a youtuber.

Matthew Louis also had a dream — a dream to make music. Unlike many others, Louis turned his dream into a reality.

U.S. Air Force Airman Louis, 86th Logistics Readiness Squadron inventory apprentice, grew up surrounded by music. His mother played the piano. His father played the bass guitar and taught him to play both instruments starting at the age of eight.

“Growing up with music is what led me to my passion for making music of my own,” Louis said. “My mom taught me the classical side and my dad taught me a more Caribbean style of music.”

Louis’ favorite genre of music is electronic dance music. He grew up listening to this kind of music and decided that he wanted to make some of his own.

“EDM resonates with me,” Louis said. “It has a lot of feeling to it because of the jazz influenced chords and a good beat.”

Starting at the age of 15, he worked diligently to grow his social media presence and develop his skills. Only two years later, Louis sold his first song, “Julia,” for approximately $30,000 to a band called Stray Kids.

“I couldn’t believe it,” Louis said. “I felt so good knowing that my hard work paid off and that others would enjoy my music as much as I do.”

After reaching this peak, Louis found himself in a valley.

“I quickly became complacent after that,” Louis said. “With college coming up and my other responsibilities, I put my passion for making music on the back burner and slowly lost sight of what was important to me.”

Looking back, he says that he regrets the “poor decisions” that he made and wishes that he would have taken advantage of the success he had.

Five years later, Louis made a huge leap of faith, one that he says gave him the necessary skills to better fulfill his dream of making music. He joined the United States Air Force.

“I knew the Air Force would teach me how to be disciplined — but it taught me more than that,” Louis said. “The Air Force taught

me how to be timely, how to set goals and accomplish them, how to work hard and finish what I started.”

With the values of the Air Force instilled in Louis and mentorship from his supervisor, he is finally back on track with making music and said he couldn’t be happier.

“He has always expressed himself regarding his hobbies and the things he likes to do,” said Tech. Sgt. Ivan Rivero, 86th LRS inventory and inspection section chief. “But, I could tell he was lacking some confidence as far as starting these things. It was important to me to tell him to ‘Do what you love.’ He was very receptive and has been sharing with me some of the new music he has been making with me and it is really good.”

Louis began making music again in January of this year and will be ready to release his new extended play, “City Lights,” this summer.

“Joining the Air Force is one of the best decisions I have ever made,” Louis said. “It gives you a stable career, education benefits and the time to chase your dreams.”

There is a special lesson to be learned from the life of Louis. When someone falls down, they can always get back up and try again.

THE HOUSING HYPE TAKE NOTE

Registry of Motor Vehicles

MOLD A health risk in your home

The health and safety of our residents is a top concern for the KMC Housing Office. Our commitment to you is to provide our housing residents with a safe living environment. In Germany, mold can often be found both indoors and outdoors. Mold can enter your home through open doorways, windows, vents, and heating and air conditioning systems. The catalyst that all mold needs is moisture. As such, you are most likely to encounter mold in damp places such as bathrooms, kitchens, laundry rooms, basements, and crawl spaces.

Identifying the presence of mold early is critical. Often, it will appear as fuzz or dust on surfaces. Even hard surfaces, such as dressers, appliances, and shelves can develop mold. Be sure to inspect vertical surfaces (walls, sides of dressers, etc.) when cleaning for mold. Also, musty odors may be an indication of mold and should be further investigated by a visual inspection. Unfortunately, and too often, mold is left unattended, and it flourishes and spreads before anything is done to remove it.

So, what can you do? Prevention is the easiest way to control mold. Limiting the amount of moisture using exhaust fans, proper ventilation and routine cleaning will greatly reduce the chances of mold.

What do I do if I have mold in my house?

If living on-base, you can call the MFH Maintenance Contractor (Vectrus 06371 463 9510). If you live off-base, you should immediately talk with your Landlord if you suspect mold growth in your home.

For more information on mold, we recommend that you go to the online link for the Environmental Protection Agency at: https://www.epa.gov/mold/brief-guide-mold-moistureand-your-home

STATE OF THE ART: Hamburg and Schleswig-Holstein

Many members of the Kaiserslautern Military Community have found temporary or even permanent homes in one of the many villages and towns surrounding Kaiserslautern in the heart of Rheinland-Pfalz. You may already be familiar with your immediate vicinity, but there is much more to explore and experience at your “home away from home”.

State of the Art is a series introducing Germany as a whole, but also highlighting an individual state or “Bundesland” every month.

After the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, both German countries reunited in 1990. The Federal Republic of Germany (West Germany) included 11 states and Berlin, in its geographically isolated location. The German Democratic Republic was comprised of five states and today’s Germany has a total of 16 “Bundesländer.”

After reunification Berlin again became the capital and the seat of the Federal Parliament (Bundestag) and the representative body of the states (Bundesrat). Olaf Scholz of the majority Social Democratic Party (SPD) is the elected Federal Chancellor of the country with 84 million inhabitants.

This month’s feature will lead us to the City State of Hamburg and Schleswig-Holstein, Germany’s northern most state.

Gateway to the World

The “Freie und Hansestadt Hamburg” (Free and Hanseatic City

of Hamburg) has been known as the “Tor zur Welt” among seafarers for centuries. It is Germany’s second largest city with 1.85 million inhabitants and is considered to be the seventh largest city in Europe.

The greater Hamburg Metropolitan Region has 5.1 million in total. The City State is surrounded by the states of Niedersachsen to the south and Schleswig-Holstein to the north.

Similar to Bremen, it has a Senate, rather than a State Parliament. Peter Tschentscher of the Social Democratic Party has been the First Mayor and Head of the Senate since March 2018.

Current Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz held this position from 2011 to 2018 and former Chancellor Angela Merkel was born in Hamburg.

Hanseatic flair

Hamburg had a long history as member of the medieval “Hanseatic League” and “Free Imperial City of the Holy Roman Empire” until 1871, when it lost its sovereignity under Emperor Bismarck.

Hamburg is not a typical sea port, it is located land inwards on the Elbe River as well as the meeting points of the Alster and Bille Rivers, but is considered to be significant due to its historic role. It is Europe’s third largest port after Rotterdam and Antwerp. For centuries Hamburg has been a bustling port with ships that sailed the world, tall tales to go along with it and was nicknamed “Gateway to the World.” Prior to steam engine trains and automobiles this was a starting point for travel to every corner of the world, including emi-

grants sailing to the new world. Its century-long role as a leading global trading hub led to Germany’s oldest stock exchange and the world‘s oldest merchant bank “Berenberg Bank” being founded there. Goods such as fine cloth and spices from the Far East, rum, sugar and tobacco from the new world, tea from India, coffee, chocolate and precious wood from South America as well as other merchandise from around the globe have been traded there since the Middle Ages.

Against the tide

During World War II Hamburg was heavily bombed, but many of the historical structures were restored in the post-war years. In 1962 tragedy struck again and an enormous storm flood hit the city. Dikes collapsed, over 300 people died, 20,000 lost their homes and water was up to 3.8 meters high in some districts, while a great part of the port was destroyed. After reconstruction, Hafen City is now one of the most popular tourist destinations and areas such as the the Speicherstadt and the Kontorhausviertel (former warehouse and customs area) were declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2015.

With 2,500 bridges over canals and rivers, Hamburg has the highest number of bridges in Europe and outranks Venice by far. The city is remarkably green with many parks, lakes and rivers for weekend recreation. In view of climate change, Hamburg has initiated a series of roof top garden projects with greenery for all.

Beatlemania

The city is well known for its cultural venues such as the Elbphilharmonie and Laeiszhalle concert halls and a number of renowned theaters and musical shows, such as “Cats” or the “Lion King,” which is performed on an island within the harbor. A popular British band, the Beatles, kickstarted its international career in Hamburg’s infamous “Star Club” in 1962.

The city center is around the Innenalster (lake) with cafés, exclusive hotels, a number of museums and a renowned shopping district leading up to the “Jungfernstieg” (maiden walk). The promenade received its name based on times when fancy, young ladies strolled along the lake in hopes of meeting a fine beau to marry. Posh city sections such as Blankenese, Nienstedten and Othmarschen boast luxurious villas of wealthy merchant families and bankers.

Seafarer tales and Störtebeker

This majestic and historic Hanseatic city has so many sights to see that it would fill a whole guide book to describe them. To name a few must-see spots, visit the Landungsbrücken along the harbor, have a “Grog” (hot water with rum) in one of the old-fashioned seafarer pubs with fisher nets that tell tales of the city’s most prominent character Klaus Störtebeker. He made history as a legendary pirate who was decapitated in 1401 and a statue of him is located in Hafen City.

Fish at five in the morning?

Stroll over the famous Fischmarkt starting at 5 a.m. every Sunday, grab a Fischbrötchen or “Steckenfisch” (on a skewer) and listen to a traditional German band in the wee morning hours. Enjoy a harbor cruise passing enormous cargo and luxurious cruise ships or privately owned yachts and sail by fancy Blankenese. Visit one of the maritime museum ships and explore Miniature Wonderland, the largest model train exhibition in Europe.

Climb up the tower of St. Michaelis church, lovingly called “Michel,” or spend a night at the “Reeperbahn” district with nightlife and more. Germany’s most famous police station “David’s Wache” is also located along this road. Another entertainment district with live music clubs is the “Sternschanze” in the city center.

Humorous Hamburg and an anniversary

Hamburg greets up to 111 million tourists a year, 900,000 alone came by ship in 2018, and almost 14 million hotel stays were recorded in 2022, making it one of the most visited cities in Europe. It also ranked very high in a recent quality of living survey. There is also some humor to the city: its licence designation is HH (Hansestadt Hamburg), pronounced as “ha ha” in German.

Hamburg is celebrating its 834th port anniversary from May 5-7 this year with a series of exciting events. For details visit: https://www.hamburg. com/port-anniversary/16795320/ activities/ or or more Hanseatic flair: thttps://www.hamburg.com/

Land of wind and between the seas

Our journey continues up north to Schleswig-Holstein, which calls itself the “land of wind and between the seas.” The state is located at the tip of Germany and borders Denmark. The North Sea is located to the West and the Baltic Sea (Germans call it the Ostsee – East Sea) to the East.

Schleswig-Holstein is Germany’s second smallest state after the Saarland with a size of 15,800 square kilometers and 2.9 million inhabitants. It is also a land of dikes, windmills, lighthouses, beach baskets and even more Hanseatic flair. The state capital is Kiel where the state parliament is located and Daniel Günther of the Christian Democratic Party has been the Minister President since June 2017.

Gateway to Scandinavia

Kiel is the largest city with 246,200 inhabitants and is just northeast of Hamburg. The easiest way to get there is by driving through the Elbtunnel underneath the Elbe River and Hamburg. The city is well known for a variety of sailing events, such at the Kieler Woche (Kiel week), the largest regatta in the world held in September. It is also famous for the Kiel Mutiny when sailors refused to board their vessels in protest against Germany’s further involvement in World War I. The Bay of Kiel was the host of the 1936 and and 1972 Summer Olympics for sailing disciplines. Kiel is also home to the German Navy’s Baltic fleet and has evolved into a significant shipbuilding center.

At Norwegen Kai or Schweden Kai

you can set sail on a ferry to Norway, Sweden or Lithuania. The port has become a popular stop for large cruise ships heading to the Baltic Sea or transitting the nearby Nord-OstseeKanal (NOK), the busiest artifical waterway in the world.

Kiel has a number of attractions such as the Schifffahrts Museum, the Botanical Gardens and the Nicolai Church. You may enjoy the Kieler Aquarium with salt water fish and animals such as seahorses, small sharks and lion fish. The Bulker Lighthouse is also worth a visit along with a leisure stroll along the Fjord. Fans of mighty ships might enjoy spending time at the Schleusenanlage Kiel-Holtenau, a system with two locks. Sun lovers can relax in the town of Laboe with beaches, shopping in small stores and a Naval Memorial Site.

From East to West on the NOK Sailing west through the NordOstsee-Kanal, there are interesting sights. The Hochbrücke (high bridge) at Rendsburg was built for trains. Since the bridge over the canal is so high, two circular tracks had to be built to overcome the steep incline where trains can crawl their way up. The view over the canal from the train or the nearby A7 Autobahn bridge is spectacular. The canal also passes by the deepest point in Germany at Wilstermarsch that lies at 3.54 meters (11 feet) under sea level, to reach its destination at the North Sea in Brunsbüttel.

Ferries take passengers to one of the eight islands along the coast, such as Amrum, Pellworm, Föhr, Nordstrand, Helgoland and Germany’s

most popular leisure island Sylt.

Helgoland is a unique archipelago with a total size of 1.7 square kilometers and consists of two islands with roughly 1,100 inhabitants. It is about 46 kilometers off the coastline, basically a giant rock in the sea, but also a strategic naval spot, has an airfield and is a duty-free area outside of the 12-mile zone. The island was traded against the island of Zanzibar (near Tanzania) in a treaty with Britain in 1890 and the “Deutschlandlied” (German national anthem) was composed there.

The North Sea is part of the Nature Reserve Wattenmeer (Wadden Sea) and small towns, such as Brunsbüttel, Husum and St. Peter Ording invite you to relax on the beaches, explore the wonders of the Wattenmeer or take a leisure bike tour on one the many dikes and discover small shops with maritime goods. Adventurers might enjoy an overnight stay in a “sleeping beach basket” on one of the sandy beaches.

Baltic Sea and Vikings

There are also a number of spots of interest to visit along the Baltic Sea coast. Lübeck, the second largest city with 219,000 inhabitants is a traditional Hanseatic city. The core of the city is located on an island. Its most famous landmark is the red brick “Holsten Tor,” which was formerly depicted on a D-Mark bill and welcomes visitors to the city center. During the Middle Ages the city played a key role as seafaring hub and is also famous for its Marzipan, a delicacy made of almonds.

Eckernförde is a popular vacation and spa town, with a brilliant blue harbor full of traditional sailboats. It is also home to one of the largest Naval installations and training sites for the German Armed Forces and has a factory where candy is hand-made.

The town of Schleswig located on the Schley has a large cathredal, a quaint circular fishermens‘ village with small, colorful dwellings called Holm with a cemetery in the center. Just west of the city you will encounter a re-constructed Viking settlement called Haitabu with remakes of clay living quarters, community buildings and workshops where guides in traditional costumes show visitors how the Vikings weaved, knitted or made glasslike pearls. The outdoor museum and an indoor display is well worth a visit to experience the lives of the Vikings.

Hygge in Flensburg

The last stop along the Baltic Sea and only 5 kilometers to Denmark is the enchanting city of Flensburg. The city lies on the Flensburger Förde (fjord), has 89,000 inhabitants and is as vivid and exciting as can be. Due to strong ties with Denmark thoughout time, the city has a “hygge” flair, best translated as “free and easy” taken from Danish. There are astonishing wooden three or four mast ships and modern sailboats anchored in the harbor, surprisingly steep inclines (the state is normally rather

flat), as well as a historic steamship “Alexandra” built in 1908 and currently under renovation.

The Schifffahrtsmuseum with an outdoor café invites you to a coffee with seagulls waiting for a treat, such as a traditional Backfischbrötchen (baked fish sandwich). The very long 1.9 km pedestrian zone is full of cafés, shops and a miriad of houses in various architectural styles next to each other. The Museumsberg on a hill overlooks the city, has a historical museum and a giant lion statue in its park. A stroll along the Kapitänsweg (captains’ way) will tell of stories about sailing the seven seas and a Rum Museum displays Flensburg’s hay day as leading rum importer.

A mini-cruise on the “Viking” will lead you past the German Marine School, astonishing houses on the water, a wharf, the Ochseninsel (Ox Islands) which belong to Denmark and seven beaches, often accompanied by an armada of sailboats racing the ship.

The voyage stops for a break at Glücksburg, the most northern city in Germany with 6,500 residents. The city has a water castle, a rose garden and has been a popular sea spa since the early 1900’s. Visitors are greeted by the very mondane “Strandhotel” opposite the peer. To round off your trip, try a sip of “Flensburger” beer brewed in the most northern brewery and served in a bottle with a “plop top.”

Sole American Medical Center in Europe celebrates 70 years

Medieval Festival at Lindenfels Castle

Landstuhl Regional Medical Center hosted a weeklong celebration, open to all DOD-ID cardholders, marking 70 years of selfless service and military medicine in Germany, April 11-14.

The week kicked off on April 11 with the Legacy Olympics, a Kaiserslautern Military Community-wide functional fitness competition hosted by LRMC’s Inpatient Behavioral Health Clinic, to promote physical fitness and healthy alternatives for mental health balance. The event was followed by two days of Leadership Professional Development sessions where current and former commanders, command sergeants major and wounded warriors shared lessons learned during their service / treatment at LRMC and the hospital’s impact on their lives.

April 14, the final day of celebration, featured a ceremony at LRMC’s Heaton Auditorium at 8 a.m. followed by an exhibit hall and live entertainment, allowing patrons to view static displays and learn about operations within the

hospital before closing out the celebration with an Organizational Day.

Schedules, biographies, and media resources can be found at https://landstuhl.tricare.mil/ About-Us/70-Years-of-SelflessService.

About Landstuhl Regional Medical Center

As the sole U.S. medical center overseas and the U.S. military’s medical evacuation center, LRMC’s primary role of critical combat care is to either treat and remedy patients’ medical concerns and return them to their units or stabilize and transfer them to another facility for further care.

With a 99 percent survival rate, the LRMC team has successfully treated more than 97,000 wounded, injured and ill U.S. troops and Coalition Forces from 56 countries who were aeromedically evacuated from throughout Europe, Africa and the Middle East.

Strategically located near Ramstein Air Base, LRMC is the largest American medical facility outside the United States, the only American College of Surgeons verified Level II Trauma Center

overseas and the only American trauma center associated with a foreign trauma network (the German Society for Trauma Surgery, or Deutsche Gesellschaft für Unfallchirurgie — DGU).

The Defense Health Agency medical center and its six additional clinics in Germany, Italy and Belgium are jointly staffed by more than 2000 dedicated professionals, including over 1,000 Army, 260 Air Force, 800 Department of Defense civilians, 300 Local Nationals, as well as Marine Corps, Navy, and Veterans Affairs personnel. This team cares for nearly 205,000 beneficiaries living and working throughout Europe.

The facility offers 53 medical specialties, houses 65 beds and averages more than 2,000 outpatient visits each day. An average daily workload includes 16 inpatient admissions, 26 operating room cases and 2 births.

The original 1,000 bed hospital was dedicated April 7, 1953, as the 320th General Hospital before a reorganization transformed it to the 2nd General Hospital, then Landstuhl Army Medical Center until it was officially named Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in 1994.

M&FRC: Providing support for members, families with special needs

Families looking for resources to support special needs can reach out to the Military & Family Readiness Center to use the Exceptional Family Member Program. This program is designed to protect federal entitlements and military benefits of special needs family members.

EFMP-Family Support, EFMPMedical and EFMP-Assignments fall under this program. The Family Support function provides referrals, parent education, information and recreational events. Medical function provides identification, enrollment and clearance to ensure appropriate medical and education services available to family members before they move to their new duty station.

Josephine Rollyson, EFMPMedical Red Cross volunteer, explained that the EFMP acts as a “trifecta” of support focusing on medical assistance, professional career growth and Air Force needs when choosing assignments for military service members.

“All of these things are considered when moving families to ensure proper support for everyone involved,” said Rollyson. “It comes down to quality of life for the dependents, military members and the military itself.”

Additionally, the Developmental Behavioral Family Readiness Center was created to aid military families for regional support and the Air Force adopted the Play and Language for Autistic Youngsters Project as an additional support program.

The team is composed of developmental specialists for children. The members include a nurse care coordinator, developmental pediatrician, pediatric psychologist and clinical social worker acting as a play project coordinator.

U.S. Air Force Capt. Neill Groeper, 86th Medical Group DBFRC nurse care coordinator, explained that the DBFRC was developed to provide families with tools to aid in the development and growth of their children. The Air Force created the concept to use Ramstein as a hub within Europe

to best support families enrolled in EFMP.

“The program’s goal is to enable family members to stay overseas,” Groeper said. “Normally, if a child was diagnosed with a spectrum disorder, they would be returned back to the states to receive proper medical care for their family member.”

To access these services, families must speak to their primary care providers.

“Primary care providers are able to work with families and provide them with information and referrals needed to ensure proper care is provided,” Groeper said.

The M&FRC has been supporting military members and their families through 13 core programs offering workshops, special events and one-on-one consultations. To learn more about these programs, call the M&FRC at DSN: 480-5100 or CIV: 06371-47-5100.

Defense Department ready to support State Department ensuring safe passage of Americans in Sudan

The Defense Department remains actively engaged with the State Department in monitoring the security situation in Sudan, said Air Force Brig. Gen. Pat Ryder during a news conference at the Pentagon today.

Ryder underscored the close work between the two agencies in planning and preparing for the evacuation of U.S. citizens who decide to depart the country in the most safe and secure way possible.

“We’re working very closely with the State Department to identify the number of Americans who want to leave Sudan as of right now,” he said. “The indications that we have is that those numbers are relatively small, however we do recognize that could change quickly.”

Approximately 100 U.S. special operations forces aided in the evacuation of about 70 members of the U.S staff from the U.S. Embassy in Khartoum on Saturday in response to escalating violence in the city.

U.S. Africa Command has established a deconfliction cell at its headquarters in Stuttgart, Germany, as a means of ensuring communication between U.S. allies and partners in the region.

Part of the deconfliction cells mission is to work with the State Department to identify available seats on international flights departing the country, Ryder said.

Ryder said the Defense

Department is also providing support in the development of overland routes for civilian evacuations, in the event the security situation deteriorates further.

“It allows us to establish a sustainable, repeatable process by which to get people out overground in larger numbers, to port Sudan, for example, where they could be received and then moved onward via sea,” he said. “That’s something that will continue to work.”

U.S. forces have maintained constant overwatch of the security situation in the region through unmanned intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance flights. U.S. Naval assets also remain off the coast of Sudan to assist as needed.

“The bottom line is we’re ready to support now,” Ryder said. “We’ll continue to work very closely with the State Department, we’ll continue to stay in close contact with our allies and partners to ensure that if an American citizen is looking to get out, we will work with State to ensure and enable that.”

Stepping back in time, US Soldiers invited to WWII reenactment in Bulgaria

U.S. Army Soldiers from the Army Support Activity-Black Sea stationed at Novo Selo Training Area, along with the 1st Battalion 18th Infantry Regiment, and the 418th Civil Affairs Battalion attended a World War II reenactment in Yambol, Bulgaria, April 23.

The Military Historical Reenactment of “Hungarian Spring 1945” depicted the battle between the Bulgarians and Germans near Lake Balaton in Hungary at the end of World War II.

The event featured weapons, explosives, howitzers, military trucks, several motorbikes, and a stationary tank.

Twenty students from the National Military University “Vasil Levski” in Veliko Tarnovo and 45 volunteers from the Reenactment Club participated in the reenactment.

“U.S. Army soldiers were in the audience and watched the historical reenactment,” said

Georgi Vardarov, Director of the Museum of Battle Glory. “By the time the Bulgarians were fighting the German-Nazi soldiers, the American Army was also fighting the German Army, but on the Western front,” said Vardarov as he emphasized the significance of bringing together Bulgarian and American military personnel during the reenactment.

The reenactment lasted an entire 20 minutes, and spectators had the opportunity to relive the historic battle through their own eyes.

“It is an honor to be here and learn so much about Bulgarian history and its role in World War II. I got the chance to see many historical vehicles and weapons that were key to the Bulgarians’ success in the battles they fought,” said Cpt. Avery Smith, a team leader assigned to the 7th Mobile Public Affairs Detachment. “The re-enactment was phenomenal, and I could tell that a lot of details and training went into perfecting this performance for the guests. Their abil-

ity to preserve their history so well makes me proud to say we are military partners. Bulgaria is a beautiful country, and the community here in Yambol felt friendly and welcoming.”

Besides the reenactment, the museum also set up static displays of tanks and other military equipment from WWII for visitors to see up close.

“This event with the Yambol Military Museum was a wonderful way to educate not only myself but the rest of the U.S. Personnel who were present,” said James Adamski, deputy garrison Manager at NSTA, as he shared his appreciation for the opportunity to learn about Bulgarian history. “Very few people know of the Bulgarian History that was so very critical at the end of WWII.”

ASA-Black Sea continues to build strong relationships with the local communities as it emphasizes the importance of strengthening its ties with the people of Bulgaria.

Report reveals military hearing loss is stable

The Defense Health Agency’s Hearing Center of Excellence

Military Hearing Conservation Reportopens Hearing Center of Excellence for fiscal year 2021 revealed that hearing loss in the Department of Defense remains relatively stable among service members and civilians enrolled in hearing conservation programs.

The report showed the percent of hearing-impaired service members increased slightly from 14.5 percent in fiscal year 2020 to 14.7 percent in FY21. Civilians saw a gradual decrease from 46.1 percent in FY13 to 42.2 percent in FY21.

According to Dr. Theresa Schulz, HCE prevention section chief, active duty service members have the lowest rates of hearing impairment in FY21 (13.3 percent) compared to the Reserve (18.0 percent) and National Guard (17.4 percent).

“Overall, hearing health in the DOD appears to be relatively stable for service members and civilians in hearing conservation programs from FY20-FY21,” explained Schulz. “The evidence suggests a trend of a marginal increase in hearing impairment for all service members combined and for active duty service members when FY21

data is compared to FY20,” she said.

The report also indicated that the number of unique hearing tests completed by DOD in FY21 decreased slightly for active duty and National Guard when compared to FY20 data; however, the Reserve and DOD civilian hearing tests increased in FY21 compared to FY20, explained Schulz.

“This overall DOD decrease in hearing tests may be due to limited access to hearing health services because of COVID-19 pandemic restrictions,” said Schulz. “During the pandemic, DOD was limited in its use of traditional audiometry (hearing tests conducted in audiometric test booths) by infection control measures due to social distancing, increased cleaning/sanitizing requirements, and compliance with Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidance regarding room air exchange requirements. For example, air exchange requirements within a booth can increase the time interval between testing personnel that significantly impacts patient flow and timely access to care for clinical and hearing conservation hearing testing.”

Another contributing factor to the slight increase in hearing impairment could also be military accessions data. The report indicates the percent of enlisted accessions with hearing impairments increased in FY21 to 11.2 percent compared to 9.7 percent in FY20.

“Reserve enlisted accessions have the lowest rates of hearing impairment at 9.9 percent compared to active duty at 11.6 percent and National Guard at 10.5 percent,” said Schulz.

Reducing hearing loss is a centerpiece of DOD’s policy to protect military personnel and noiseexposed civilians from hearing impairment caused by occupational and operational noise exposure through a continuous, effective, and comprehensive hearing conservation program. The policy also strives to reduce hazardous occupational and operational noise exposure to enhance mission readiness, communication, and safety.

“Those enrolled in a hearing conservation program get annual hearing tests, hearing protection fittings, and hearing conservation education sessions to reduce noiseinduced hearing loss, according to HCE’s Branch Chief U.S. Air Force Col. Samuel Spear. “These educational sessions are important touchpoints for achieving hearing readiness,” he said. “Hearing readiness is

a process to ensure service members have the necessary hearing capability and properly fitted hearing protection devices for mission readiness and deployment.”

Spear noted several efforts are underway across the service components to reduce noise-induced hearing loss.

One significant action on the horizon is a new DOD policy that will soon require hearing protector fit testing to be conducted on all DOD personnel who are exposed to certain noise levels.

According to Schulz, HCE is leading efforts requiring hearing protector fit testing to help mitigate the risk of over exposure to hazardous noise.

“Hearing protector fit testing measures the amount of noise reduction, or attenuation, a hearing protector provides while it is being worn,” explained Schulz. “Among many advantages, fit testing can identify workers at risk for noiseinduced hearing loss due to inadequate hearing device fit, help personnel select the right device for their work environment, train workers to properly fit and use hearing protectors, and reduce noise-induced hearing loss for service members enrolled in hearing conservation programs.”

Seeing a change in hearing impairment data could take some time, Schulz noted. The upcoming FY22 hearing health report consequently may not show a vast improvement over the current report. “Changes in these high-level metrics can take years because these lagging measures lack the ability to measure short-term changes, but we are closely monitoring,” she added.

Although these measures of effectiveness are lagging measures, they do summarize the overall hearing health of the force including the civilian workforce, Schulz pointed out.

“We are always exploring ways to improve our hearing loss prevention efforts at the DOD, service, and individual levels. This includes efforts to better monitor, protect, and educate — the three components of HCE’s Comprehensive Hearing Health Program,” said Schulz.

ABC IN KMC: Landstuhl’s last knight

86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs

While driving though Landstuhl you’ve most likely spotted the ruins of Castle Nanstein towering above. The castle was home to Franz von Sickingen, a rebellious knight in shining armor during the late Middle Ages in the 16th century and is the city’s most prominent character.

Franz was born March 2, 1481, at Castle Ebernburg near Bad Kreuznach along the Nahe River. After the death of his father Schweikard von Sickingen, he inherited a number of individual properties between the Nahe River, the Lower Alsace region and the northern Black Forest.

At the age of 18 he married Hedwig von Flörsheim, had six children with her, when she died during childbirth of the seventh. Up until then Franz concentrated on maintaining and extending his possessions when restless years of feuds set in.

During the Middle Ages a feud was a quarrel between landown-

ers, usually accusing one another of trying to invade or take land away. Feuds were forbidden by Canon Law, but Franz became reckless, ignored the prohibition, and offered the services of his well-equipped and mighty army to anyone who promised him economic gain. He didn’t exactly make friends with the Catholic clergy but it enabled him to fund

his ambitious goals set for the future.

In 1519 Franz met Ulrich von Hutten, who was an adamant supporter of Martin Luther’s Protestant Reform movement. Castle Nanstein soon became frequent venue for meetings of leading Reformists. By late summer 1522 Franz tried to promote the reform by force and heroically

marched to the City of Trier to overtake the Catholic clergy. He was stunned to be confronted by the archbishop and his mighty army. By September 14, Franz realized that he had been and outsmarted and defeated, had to cease the siege, and was forced to retreat to Castle Nanstein.

Electoral Palatinate and Hessian troops followed him,

destroying several allied castles along the route to Landstuhl. By the end of April 1523 Franz was captivated in his own castle when the storm of besiegers and heavy artillery fire let the fortress crumble to ruins within a few hours. Franz was forced to recapitulate and died of his wounds May 7, 1523.

Though he neither succeeded in the end nor was able to save the famed knighthood of the era, he was declared as an ideal figure of the late Middle Ages and honored with the title “Last Knight.” The “Sickinger Herolde” is a distinguished fanfare group with drums and horns in traditional costume which parade through Landstuhl during celebrations and festivities in honor of Franz.

The City of Landstuhl is celebrating a dual anniversary this year, 700 years of City Rights and the 500 years of Franz’s passing. Watch out for the colorful men and women with their red flags, rolling drums and the sound of horns during upcoming anniversary events in Landstuhl.

Air Force Reserve takes 75th anniversary celebration to Talladega

Robert

Engines roared and the crowd cheered as more than 170,000 spectators helped celebrate 75 years of airpower and horsepower at NASCAR’s Talladega Superspeedway, April 22.

“This is a special day not only for the 70,000-plus Citizen Airmen of the Air Force Reserve, but also for NASCAR, as we’re both cel-

ebrating our 75th anniversary this year,” said Lt. Gen. John Healy, chief of the Air Force Reserve and commander of Air Force Reserve Command. “The men and women of NASCAR have a great deal in common with the United States Air Force and the Air Force Reserve. They both celebrate dedication and they’re both looking for perseverance and most importantly, patriotism.”

The Air Force Reserve was officially established on April

14, 1948, by President Harry S. Truman. NASCAR got its start on December 14, 1947, when 35 influential leaders within the burgeoning sport met to consolidate and coordinate stock car racing under a single and unified banner.

Prior to the start of the race, more than a dozen Delayed Entry Program recruits stood on the main stage in front of the large, energized crowed to pledge their oath of enlistment, which was administered by Healy.

“As we celebrate 75 years of heritage between the two of us, I want to give a shout-out to all those who have served in uni -

form before us and to those who are serving today, inspiring young men and women like these to raise their right hand and take the oath,” Healy said. “The oath of enlistment is significant. It’s a promise made to the country that you will defend the Constitution of the United States and the freedoms that we enjoy every day.”

Not only was this a significant day for the young men and women becoming Airmen, race fans at the track and millions of viewers at home got the opportunity to see a specialized Air Force Thunderbirds paint scheme on the No. 3 car driven by Erik Jones, driver of the

Air Force-sponsored Legacy Motor Club team.

“It’s been an honor to represent the U.S. Air Force the last few years,” Jones said before the race. “My grandfather served, so I have a personal connection to them. To have Lt. Gen. Healy at the track with us this weekend is really special. We were so close to a win at Talladega in the fall, I would really like a chance to be there at the end and score a win for them to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the Air Force Reserve.” Jones placed sixth in the race that was eventually won by Kyle Busch.

SPEYER from Page 1

dated 150 AD, as Noviomagus. There are many delightful parts of Speyer to explore, and its location in Germany’s wine-growing region makes it especially inviting.

What to see in Speyer

The Kaiserdom (Imperial Cathedral)

You can’t miss the imposing Romanesque Kaiserdom (Imperial Cathedral), as the town is dominated by its four spires and two domes. Its actual full name is the Imperial Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption and St Stephen (Dom zu Unserer lieben Frau in Speyer).

It was founded by Konrad II in 1030 and was rebuilt by Henry IV. The church is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site and attracts many tourists. The crypt is the final resting place of some of Germany’s rulers and bishops. Today it is the largest Romanesque church in the world.

Don’t miss the huge stone font, with a capacity of 1,560 litres, that lies in the square in front of the cathedral’s main portal. This once symbolized the borderline between the diocese and the city of Speyer.

The Old City Gate

The Old City Gate was part of the city wall and the western gate. The fortifications had 68 wall and gate towers. The top floor was added in the 16th century, while the steep roof and the lantern date back to the beginning of the 18th century.

Visitors can climb the tower for a superb view of the city. On your way up it, stop at the second floor to see the permanent exhibition which traces the history of the fortifications and that of the gate.

The City Hall

The City Hall is a late-Baroque building with an imposing exterior. The council chamber is in the early Rococo style and is now used for functions such as concerts and weddings.

The Old Fish Market

The fish and wood market was located

in the old town, which is now marked by a sculpture of a fish.

Speyer’s Museums

The Technik Museum Speyer has planes, vintage cars, motorbikes and fire engines, and is perfect for those interested in the history of transport. There’s a submarine as well as a Lufthansa jumbo jet, a Russian Buran orbiter and many other fascinating exhibits.

The Historical Museum of the Palatinate is close to the cathedral and is dedicated to the history of Speyer and the surrounding region. It houses five permanent collections that encompass Prehistory, Roman Times, the Cathedral Treasury, the Modern Era and the Wine Museum. The Munich architect, Gabriel von Seidl, designed the castle-like museum, which opened in 1910 and was renovated in the late 1980s. Inside this muse-

um is the Young Person’s Museum of Speyer, which was the first museum especially for young people in the RhinelandPalatinate region.

The Carnival Museum is dedicated to the history of the Carnival in Speyer and has exhibits on four floors of the tower and in an annex. The history of the carnival goes back to 1296, so there are some fascinating exhibits.

Sea Life Speyer

If you are into sea creatures, then this is the place to go. You enter an undersea world where colorful fish, sharks and Marty, the green sea turtle, live. There are fresh and salt-water tanks, and the museum takes up two floors, so you have many creatures to view and marvel at.

What to do in Speyer

• Hiking: There are urban hikes in

Speyer as well as more traditional hikes in the countryside or forest. Visitors can also follow in the (presumed) footsteps of Saint James on his journey to the Path of St. James to Santiago de Compostela.

• Cycling: The World Heritage Cycling Route runs through Speyer gives visitors the opportunity to explore three of Germany’s states. You can also cycle along the banks of the Rhine, or there’s the Palatia Route which takes you through wine country. Naturally enough, there is the oenophile (winelovers) route which goes from Speyer to Edesheim.

• Wine tasting: There are several wine bars in Speyer including Weinstube Klosterstübchen, Weinstube Rabennest and Weinstube Schwarzamsel. Of course, if you venture outside the city you will find vineyards where you can sample the wine and traditional food.

Getting to Speyer

By car, Speyer is 1 hour and 15 minutes from Kaiserslautern, or Wiesbaden, and 1 hour and 30 minutes from Stuttgart. Check out the Deutsche Bahn website at https://www.bahn.com/en for train details.
