Agile Wolf continues to build expeditionary skill-sets

The exercise enhanced the 435th CRS’s ability to coordinate and carry out mobility operations with the 37th AS in a semi-permissive environment. This time, both squadrons built on the foundations they laid in the first Agile Wolf. “We have learned that we are very good at performing our main mission elements of opening an expeditionary airfield,” said U.S. Air Force Maj. Airmen that may not always work together had the chance to learn from one another and look at things from a different perspective.

“We have a very diverse set of specialty codes and skills that we can take advantage of,” said Johnson. Sharing knowledge between squadron and career fields further enhanced their partnerships. Johnson said, “Agile Wolf demonstrates how rapidly the Air Force can mobilize and execute with precision.” Both squadrons plan to continue Exercise Agile Wolf every quarter to strengthen the ability to provide the region’s only airlift, airdrop, and aeromedical evacuation operations capability and provide professional airlift to any country, any time.

scale throughout the deployment to develop proficiencies. “This training is a chance for our civil engineer Airmen to

A mobile training team conducted the RADR training from the 435th Construction and Training Squadron, Ramstein Air Base. “This is why we have the best RADR program in the world,” said Goebel. “When it comes to what these Airmen can do, going from sustaining an attack to recovering the airfield in just a matter of hours, no one else comes close.” The training included two days of classroom instruction, which covered the core competencies and procedures followed by hands-on RADR training on the final day, following a simulated attack on the airfield.
RADR involves the majority of civil engineers working together simultaneously to repair the runway expeditiously. Each section throughout the repair is responsible for a certain part of the process. “First, explosive ordnance disposal will go through and clear the airfield of any unexploded ordnance,” said Goebel. “As they find the UXO’s, they will blow them in place and move on. Later, a sweep will come through to clear any other UXO’s from the airfield.” After EOD clears the airfield, it is the heavy equipment operator’s responsibility to move debris out of the area. Airmen used heavy construction equipment to break
up ‘airfield craters’ into larger holes that are then excavated to a certain depth, and filled in with flowable fill, economical backfill materiel, and rapid set concrete. “Within just a couple of hours, we can launch aircraft and continue the fight,” Goebel continued. “It’s an example of how resilient our air bases are, and that nothing can stop us. If someone launches an attack on one of our airfields, this process, this program, and most importantly, these engineers, show that we can respond almost immediately to any threat.” According to Lokken, this training ensures that each engineer shop will have an experienced RADR subject matter expert to facilitate training on a smaller

Airlifter of the Week: 86th MDOS Airman’s passion for success through health by Senior Airman Elizabeth Baker 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs U.S. Air Force Senior Airman David Hawkins, 86th Medical Operations Squadron pediatric medical technician, received the honor of being named Ramstein’s Airlifter of the Week, Feb. 13. Hawkins has a passion for leading others to a balanced life of mental, spiritual and physical health, he said. That passion started with his upbringing in Alabama. “It’s a state full of love and community, and with community comes food,” Hawkins said. “That’s where we don’t do so well.” Seeing people with ideas and talents but without the energy to pursue them made Hawkins want to help, he said. “A lot of people don’t recognize the correlation between sleep, nutrition and exercise to facilitate who you are,” Hawkins said. “I don’t want you to be in shape just to take a picture on Instagram. I want you to be able to do what you were put on earth to do.” With an ultimate goal to serve the Air Force as a dietician, Hawkins runs U.S. Air Forces Europe-Air Forces Africa’s largest Pediatric Developmental Clinic. He analyzes referrals for children with developmental disabilities, gathers information for diagnoses and refers them to the medical professionals who can help. The clinic serves five bases and

He used his education and training to launch nutrition and cooking classes for 350 base dormitory residents after the 86th Force Support Squadron Rheinland

He also frequently volunteers to brief at commander’s calls, where he teaches the importance of healthy lifestyle. Hawkins takes his passion
beyond work hours and serves as a personal trainer at American Medical Center, a civilian medical practice in Landstuhl. The dutiful work ethic Hawkins displays came from his father. “I have a very, very hard working dad,” Hawkins said. “He would work 15-hour shifts and then come home and work on his house.” The passion and work ethic Hawkins displays got the attention of his leadership, who nominated him for Airlifter of the Week. Brig. Gen. Mark August, 86th Airlift Wing commander, coined Hawkins in a gathering of the Airman’s peers and leadership. This award is for the best Airmen and for those who make the mission happen, August said. The 86th AW is very proud to offer Airlifter of the Week to someone who takes care of people and who makes amazing things happen as much as Hawkins does. Hawkins plans to continue using his skills and training to support his fellow Airmen. He is currently pursuing a master’s degree in Nutrition, and his next step is to design meal and exercise plans for personnel throughout Ramstein. The legacy he hopes to leave the Air Force is teaching Airmen to think of health beyond mandatory fitness tests and to instill understanding of how fitness is connected to physical and mental wellness.

The projector beamed its predictable power-point display onto the white backdrop drooping from the ceiling above us. To kick off this three-day professional development seminar, a senior NCO prompted a question: “What is mindfulness?” As the anxiety-ridden individual I am, I refrained from answering right away. I listened to everyone else’s responses and then, when I had built up enough courage, I uttered, “self-awareness.” The briefer tossed me a validating head-nod and my heart rate slowed down. I don’t know what it is with my extroverted, social mind sending conflicting signals to my body, but I digress. My answer, while not wrong, was a piece of the bigger picture. Then, it clicked as he said, “There’s a space between stimulus and response.” The moment between an action, and a response, can be summed up with an analogy: the bomb, the spark and the fuse. The bomb represents a response with negative outcomes. The spark represents the stimulus. And the fuse represents the space between them. You can defuse the bomb, but it may take time. In that case, you’ll need a longer fuse. If the fuse is too short and you fail to defuse the bomb, well…boom goes the dynamite! This topic immediately resonated with me because of a recent situation I’d faced weeks before attending this seminar. It came at me like a semi-truck on the autobahn. As a young NCO, I have very little experience in dealing with confrontation at a level in which I have authority. I had used my authority as an NCO to give a lawful order. The Airman’s response to the order wasn’t what I had expected. While it wasn’t neces-

sarily a wrong response, it definitely wasn’t the appropriate response for that moment. This was the spark. Because I wasn’t prepared, I did not choose the length of fuse needed for the situation. So, my mind made itself up and gave me the shortest fuse in the known universe. And then…boom went the dynamite! Instead of shrapnel, the metaphorical bomb hurled shreds of multi-colored confetti around me, each color representing a different emotion. I then began spewing out the “Hold your horses, Airman, now you listen here...”-type response. It honestly wasn’t the worst confrontational experience a fresh NCO could have had, but it could have been much better. If only I had heard what this senior NCO had shared with us about mindfulness sooner. He explained it so well. What do you do
when faced with these kinds of situations? Take a pause. Just breathe. Relax. Think. What caused the Airman to say this? Why was the Airman upset? What was happening in the Airman’s life? Asking these simple questions may be all you need in finding the appropriate response, instead of letting that bomb detonate. Then came the awkward part of the brief. A room full of grown adults were asked to close their eyes, be completely silent and breathe. I could hear the stomach of a hungry NCO in the back of the room grumbling. “Just breathe,” the instructor repeated. “And if you start to think about work, just let it go.” I saw this in movies all the time, and I always chuckled. But this made sense. Here and now, I needed to let go. I don’t do that enough. As we sat there all statuesque, I remember feeling my heart beating rhythmically. I remember what it smelled like in that room, and I remember the subtle noises that would otherwise get lost among the usual ruckus. As someone who gets over-stimulated very easily, it was nice. My mind was calm, and although my eyes were closed, my vision had never been clearer. It was then I knew I had control over the fuse. I choose how long it is. Next time a confrontational situation occurs — because let’s face it, there will be a next time — I will have this lesson under my belt. It will serve as a reminder to utilize the space between stimulus and response so I don’t have to sweep up the pile of colorful confetti. I can teach Airmen right from wrong, or even better from worse, while showing them what it means to be a leader. I don’t want to be viewed as the enemy; I want to be viewed as the NCO who genuinely cares. Because I do care. My actions need to prove it, and this professional enhancement seminar showed me that.

Ramstein receives largest munitions shipment in over 20 years

Airmen downloaded and stored more than 200 containers in the 86th MUNS area to further strengthen and generate rapid outflow of munitions to support three
combatant commands. The 86th MUNS Airmen are charged with packaging these components which enable the ability to generate and quickly ship packages throughout Europe and Africa. “We will ship the components out and [Airmen in the] area of responsibility will build them up,” said U.S. Air Force Master Sgt. Dustin Fish, 86th MUNS systems flight chief.

The 86th MUNS provides support to generate and employ air mobility enabling air and space power projection by storing, packaging and shipping the munitions to three combatant commands.
Once a munitions request comes to Ramstein, the 86th MUNS will ensure the MUNS Airmen on the receiving end get all the tail kits and components necessary to fulfill their unit task codes, Fish added. With such a large shipment of munitions, the Airmen worked around the clock to verify, download and store dozens of containers over the course of a week. The unit divided into crews and worked multiple shifts in order to keep up with the increased pace of inbound components being delivered. “One crew received the delivery while another crew down-
loaded the ISOs,” Fish said. “The third crew unloaded the ISOs and placed the components in the storage buildings and the last crew picked up the empty containers and stacked them.” The scheduled shipments of munitions increased support for Ramstein’s posture to respond to any emerging theater operations resulting from an increased presence of Department of Defense’s European Deterrence Initiative. The munitions crews accounted for all components’ serial numbers, and placed them within their respective containers in a specified storage building. Each build-
ing is built to safely store munitions, components and bombs on each installation based on the Air Force Weapons Safety Division at Kirtland Air Force Base, New Mexico. Research and planning is critical when receiving shipments. MUNS Airmen have to figure out the munition component compatibility, type of munition, and where it can be safely stored. “Precise planning allows MUNS to streamline munitions movements in support of the 86th Airlift Wing’s primary mission of generating air mobility and air power projection,” Fish said.

10th AAMDC DCO assumes chairmanship of NATO PAMD The 10th Army Air and Missile Defense Command hosted the European Integrated Air and Missile Defense Conference at NATO Allied Air Command Headquarters at Ramstein Air Base, Jan.14-15.

Robert Durr 10th Army Air and Missile Defense Command The 10th Army Air and Missile Defense Command DCO has assumed the chairmanship of NATO’s Panel on Air and Missile Defense and is working closely with NATO leadership, allies and partners to adapt and provide the best possible defense against a complex array of air and missile threats. “It’s an honor to be confirmed as the chairman,” said Col. Bruce Bredlow, 10th AAMDC deputy commander. “We are transitioning to an Integrated Air and Missile Defense capability that allows us to react to the complex array of threats facing our forces.” The PAMD is a multinational body responsible for advising and assisting the Air and
Missile Defense Committee in the development and maintenance of all aspects necessary to achieve a comprehensive and coherent approach to NATO IAMD, Air Command and Control and Joint Air Power related issues. The panel is comprised of subject matter experts who have proven proficiency in policy along with operational and technical expertise in IAMD matters. The PAMD provides the Air and Missile Defense committee with a vision for NATO IAMD based on future IAMD trends and developments. It also provides the AMDC with information and advice concerning the identification of required IAMD capabilities in close coordination with the nations, the NATO Military Authorities, NATO Agencies and the International Staff. Bredlow said his new
position on the NATO PAMD gives the command a voice that can affect policy and will help leverage 10th AAMDC’s capacity in NATO and Europe. “The Air and Missile Defense Committee had the trust and confidence in me to confirm me in this position, a significant position that can help influence positive changes across the NATO air defense community.” Bredlow said. “I think it’s a huge honor and I am looking forward to working alongside partners in the alliance and ensuring that we are involving all nations in the integrated air and missile defense mission.” This new role is emblematic of 10th AAMDC’s willingness and readiness to work with talented and dedicated European partners to improve, expand, and integrate air

Friendly competition: Married Soldiers both get selected for drill sergeant academy Story & photo by Russell Toof Regional Health Command Europe It’s often said that the job of a good Soldier is to help train and prepare the next generation of Soldiers. For staff sergeants Carlos and Jamie Castillo, that’s exactly what they are getting ready to do. This married couple reenlisted together recently and will soon leave Regional Health Command Europe to become U.S. Army drill sergeants. “I come from a military background and being a drill sergeant is something I always wanted to do,” said Jamie. “Those are the people who mold and shape you into the Soldier you will become. I’m happy I’ll get to train the next generation of Soldiers.” Carlos’ selection to the drill sergeant academy wasn’t as much of a certainty, which made his selection even more special. “I’m surprised I was selected because my career field is so small and there generally are not allocations to career broadening assignments like this,” said Carlos. “I want to motivate the new Soldiers. I don’t just want to be the angry, mean, drill sergeant.” The Castillos met in Germany in 2012 at their first duty station. “We actually met through social media,” said Jamie. Just a few months earlier, Jamie had enlisted as a dental technician and Carlos as a veterinary food inspector specialist. Since 2017, Carlos has been filling dual roles as Public Health Command Europe’s Sexual Assault and Sexual Harassment Lead Victim Advocate as well as Public Health Activity-Rheinland-Pfalz’s food branch section noncommissioned officer. Jamie came back from a deployment at the beginning of 2019 and since then, has served as the Operations Noncommissioned Officer in Charge under Dental Health ActivityRheinland-Pfalz. often subject to long separations from loved ones, and must face the uncertainty and demands of multiple deployments, school and job transfers, and frequent moves. This can be even more challenging when both spouses are Soldiers. “There are challenges being a dualmilitary family and maintaining a work-life balance,” said Carlos. “However, don’t be a statistic. Dual-military couples are prone to a high-divorce rate. Have trust and communication with your partner. Make sure you understand each other’s jobs.” Jamie echoed her husband’s feelings about supporting your significant other.
“It’s been a friendly competition between the two of us,” said Jamie when describing her and Carlos teasing each other about who got promoted first or who had better physical fitness test scores. “However, your career is my career and vice-versa.” Both Castillos have their own long-range goals after their time as drill sergeants. Carlos wants to attend airborne school and become a warrant officer. Jamie would like to finish her college degree and become a member of the esteemed Audie Murphy Club. This annual survey gives overseas U.S. service members the opportunity to make a meaningful impact on their entitlements for their off-base housing allowance. The market place will be decorated in spring colors and all kinds of items for families will be offered. Besides Easter decorations there will be flowers and arts and crafts. March 29, stores will

All objects on display can be bought. “Last year, we had almost 1,200 visitors coming to this market,” Klein said. “We also offer a raffle where participants can win decorative prizes.” Snacks and beverages will be offered in the cafeteria. Admission to the Easter egg market is offered for a small fee. All net profits will go to the Westpfalz Werkstaetten, which is a sheltered workshop for people with disabilities.
