Ramstein resumes pre-pandemic operations Story and graphic by Airman 1st Class Lauren Jacoby 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs The Cold, Cough and Allergy Clinic, and the COVID-19 Testing Center at the 86th Medical Group at Ramstein Air Base will close and clinic services will return to prepandemic operations. The COVID-19 Testing Center saw its last patient March 10. Patients who believe they need a COVID-19 test should report to the Cold, Cough and Allergy Clinic until March 24, to be evaluated by a provider. If a COVID-19 test is needed, it will be provided at the clinic. “We are currently not seeing as many COVID cases,” said Tech. Sgt. Kirsty House, 86th Medical Group Cold, Cough and Allergy Clinic noncommissioned officer in charge. “Germany’s restrictions have decreased, so we are trying to make sure we are in line with them.” Following the closure of the Cold, Cough and Allergy Clinic, patients will need to make an appointment with their PCM using the appointment line or TriCare Online. “We are trying to increase access to care in our primary care clinics,” said House. “Bringing providers back from the COVID-19 Testing Center and the Cold and Cough Clinic opens upward of 50 appointment slots each week.” To make appointments, beneficiaries should call DSN: 479-2733, or commercial: 06371-46-2733. RADIANT FALCON from Page 1 top exercises and simulated events as part of the radiological detection and decontamination exercise. “This exercise allowed us to test our capabilities and integration with units like emergency management, port and maintenance Airmen,” said U.S. Air Force Senior Airman Jordan Minto, 86th Operational Medical Readiness Squadron bioenvironmental journeyman. “We were able to see how well we’d respond to aircrafts coming from a radioactive plume and test and decontaminate the aircraft and Airmen.” Exercise Radiant Falcon was the first for USAFE-AFAFRICA as the command works to develop and expand the scope of training, and plan to conduct additional events at other bases across the area of responsibility. “We are setting a baseline for the Air Force in how to respond to these events and hoping to keep conducting these wing-level exercises,” said Wagner. “The concept of operations will never become capabilities until exercised, tested and refined to meet mission needs.”

“Yellow bags” For disposal of light fractions, it is mandatory for townhouse and stairwell residents to use yellow bags, because this kind of trash is recyclable. Yellow bags are available for on-base residents at the Self-Help Store during office hours Mon-Fri from 8 a.m.-6 p.m. and Sat from 8 a.m.-4 p.m. The use of yellow bags is also mandatory for local economy housing. The bags are free of charge and provided by your local recycling center. Items that belong in the yellow bag: Plastics, foils, milk cartons, metals etc. Items that don’t belong in the yellow bags: Glass, shoes, paper, spray cans etc. For on-base residents please, check the Reduce, Reuse & Recycle booklet you received during your move-in inspection for more information. To receive a replacement booklet, please come to the KMC Housing Office facilities section on Vogelweh to pick one up. SMART TIP: Townhouse residents should keep their yellow bags inside until pick-up day, in order to avoid damage which could be caused by bad weather conditions or animals. Military & Family Readiness Center: Money talks Story and photos by Airman 1st Class Jordan Lazaro 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs The Military & Family Readiness Center hosted a personal financial readiness class for members of the Kaiserslautern Military Community at Ramstein Air Base, March 13. The class highlighted personal financial readiness resources and qualified individuals were available to provide basic money management advice. “A lot of people assume that the personal financial readiness program is only for people who are experiencing financial issues; but we support individuals’ basic financial needs such as creating budgets, setting goals and providing them with another eye to look over their current financial situation and providing them with information to improve it,” said Angie Field, 86th Force Support Squadron, Military & Family Readiness Center community readiness consultant and personal financial manager. “Additionally, we serve all members of the KMC, if you have access to the base we will provide you with support and our services.” Services offered by the M&FRC include information, education and personal financial counseling from accredited and certified financial counselors to ensure individual and family financial readiness.

Ramstein kicks off Ramstein hosts HQ AIRCOM AFAF campaign basketball championship
by 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs The annual Air Force Assistance Fund campaign runs from March 20 until May 6 and Ramstein’s goal is to reach $89,337 in donations to assist Airmen and their families from service entry to retirement and beyond. The AFAF aims to help Airmen, Guardians, and their families when they need it the most. “The Air Force Assistance Fund is one way we can take care of each other,” said Master Sgt. Benjamin Ward, 86th Operations Support Squadron, noncommissioned officer of air traffic control training. “It’s part of our Air Force culture and every dollar donated goes directly into the pockets of someone who needs it the most.” The AFAF consists of four charities: The Air Force Aid Society, Air Force Enlisted Village, the LeMay Foundation and Air Force Villages Charitable Foundation. The Air Force Aid Society provides emergency financial assistance, educational support and community programs for Air Force and Space Force families. AFAS utilizes 100 percent of every contribution received to help Airmen, Guardians and their families. The Air Force Enlisted Village has been committed to providing homes to thousands of Air Force widows. AFEV also provides bus
transportation to go to and from medical appointments, the commissary and the base exchange. The LeMay Foundation awards grants to support widows and widowers of Airmen and Guardian retirees. Monthly grants assist with medical and prescription needs, meal services and other unexpected expenses. The Air Force Villages Charitable Foundation provides critical care and housing to widowed spouses of retired Air Force and Space Force officers. Over 92 percent of those who receive assistance live in assisted living, skilled nursing or memory care facilities. These charities are not included in the Combined Federal Campaign lineup. AFAF is a oneof-a-kind campaign for Airmen and Guardians, by Airmen and Guardians. Anyone can contribute, regardless of their military affiliation. Those making donations can choose one of the four foundations, or they can allow AFAF to distribute the donations based on each foundation’s needs. Unit project officers and key workers will be visiting with their units to answer any questions, as well as to collect donations. Women’s History Month spotlight: USAG Rheinland-Pfalz’s first Sergeant Story by Linda Lambiotte U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz Public Affairs From the Revolutionary War to more current days, women have played a vital role in the Army, putting the needs of the nation above their own. March is Women’s History Month, a time to celebrate the accomplishments and contributions of women to American History and the U.S. Army. President Ronald Reagan signed a proclamation dedicating March as Women’s History Month on March 16, 1987. “Women have fought for moral and social reform and have taken part in and led many great social and political movements of our land,” the proclamation reads. “Women have served our nation with valor and distinction during wartime, nursing the wounded, piloting airplanes, performing vital jobs in defense plants," it continues. This month, U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz is highlighting 1st Sgt. Ronelle Wallace-Robinson, first sergeant for Headquarters & Headquarters Company at Rhine Ordnance Barracks, Kaiserslautern. “To me, just being a woman requires strength,” she said. “We are still having ‘first woman ever to do this’ conversations today, so, to wake up and find yourself in a body of a female or even identifying as a female means you have to be prepared for what lies ahead.”

1st Sgt. Ronelle Wallace-Robinson, first sergeant for Headquarters & Headquarters Company at U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz, has served in the Army for the past 23 years. “The Army made me more disciplined, but it also helped keep me grounded and reminded me of the important things in life,“ she said.
In her current position, WallaceRobinson advises the company commander. She is also responsible for the accountability, training, and overall welfare of the Soldiers within the company and their families. Born and raised in the Caribbean Island of Dominica (not to be confused with the Dominican Republic), Wallace-Robinson moved to the United States about six months before joining the U.S. Army. At the time, both her father and uncle were both already serving in the Army. “I was working and attending the local community college, but I did not have a clear path ahead of what I wanted to do with my life,” she said. “I was approached by a recruiter who explained to me the benefits of enlisting, and I decided to join so I could receive the Montgomery GI Bill.” The MGIB provides up to 36 months of education benefits to service members for educational or vocational programs. Wallace-Robinson has served in the Army for the past 23 years. Her first assignment was as a 92Y,
unit supply specialist at Fort Hood, Texas. Other significant assignments include working as an 92Y instructor/writer at the Quartermaster School at Fort Lee, Virginia, and as a contracting officer representative at Camp Arifjan, Kuwait. This is her second tour in Germany. She was previously stationed at McCully Barracks in Wackernheim. Over the course of her career, she has deployed several times, once to Iraq and twice to Afghanistan. To Wallace-Robinson, obtaining the rank of first sergeant is one of the most important goals she has achieved while in the Army because only a small percentage of Soldiers earn and get to wear such rank. “Being able to educate the next generation of Soldiers who will someday replace me is important to me because it is my way of giving back to the Quartermaster Corps and the Army,” she said. Growing up, she was inspired by women such as Prime Minister Mary Eugina Charles, the first female lawyer and first and only (to date) prime minister in Dominica.
“She was a true trailblazer,” said Wallace-Robinson. The Army has shaped the choices she made since enlisting, and overall, the course of her life. “The Army made me more disciplined, but it also helped keep me grounded and reminded me of the important things in life,” she said. Wallace-Robinson is aware that female Soldiers face particular challenges. “Making decisions about their professional paths after becoming pregnant is probably the biggest challenge encountered,” she said. “I was fortunate to have the love and assistance of my parents, who helped me co-parent my son while I was deployed, as well as any other time I had to be away. Even though it was still challenging, I came to realize that if it wasn’t for them, I would have not been able to stay in the Army for so long.” She said that her family made many sacrifices during her time serving but is happy that the Army has enabled her to give back to them — giving them the good life they deserve. She is also a strong supporter of the ‘Battle Buddy System.’ “The Battle Buddy concept has stuck with me all these years,” she said. “It is important you always let someone know your whereabouts – I try to keep my husband informed at all times, and ask my closest girlfriends to let me know where they are going and who they will be hanging out with.” Some of the women who Wallace-Robinson currently admires are her sisters — Chief Petty Officer Tashika Garraway, Dawnette Wallace and Dellita Berry. “They all moved to the United States in their teens and have embraced the opportunities afforded to them,” she said. “My ‘bonus’ daughter, Adelshia Robinson, also makes me very proud. She became a military child when her dad and I got married. She had to switch schools when we moved to Germany, but that didn’t stop her from excelling academically at her new school.” As a female Army leader, Wallace-Robinson has some words of advice for new generations of Soldiers. “First and foremost, practice empathy and be approachable. Remember — we all have different backgrounds. Remain true to yourself and never compromise who you are,” she said. “Take advantage of the opportunities that are afforded to you and always make your family your number one priority.”

Ramstein Airmen become street smart

The presentation was intended to educate Airmen about the hazards of distracted driving and
proper safety procedures while operating a motor vehicle. The event highlighted the importance of wearing a seatbelt and the consequences of drinking while driving. “These first responders go out and talk to all types of people in events like this,” said Senior Master Sgt. Jessica Sonnier, 86th Safety Office superintendent. “Our team asked them to come out to
talk to all the bases within United States Air Force in Europe.” The event included real-life scenarios acted out by Airmen. One demonstration depicted an Airman who simulated being in a crash and was put in critical condition. First responders then explained about the life-altering procedures that the victim would endure. “When I first became a fire-

fighter, we would see a lot of young adults seriously injured, or worse, from not wearing seatbelts, or drinking and driving,” said Oscar Duran, a Miami-Dade Fire Department firefighter paramedic. “Anything we can do outside our normal duties as a firefighter goes far because it’s not too late to tell people how to be safe.” At the end of the presentation, Airmen were given the opportunity
to ask questions and discuss their own driving experiences. “I was actually in a really bad car accident; I had been drinking and I ran off the side of the road,” said Tech. Sgt. Amanda Martinez, 86th Airlift Wing Integrated Resilience Office noncommissioned officer in charge. “It was a traumatic experience. This really hit home for me and I appreciate what the presenters are doing.”

For Landan LaRocque, however, joining the U.S. Army and following in his father’s footsteps is what makes the most sense. “Honestly, I didn’t know what I really wanted to do,” he said. “What I did know, though, was that I needed a sense of purpose, and I knew the U.S. Army would be able to give that to me.” His father is Command Sgt. Maj. Stephen LaRocque, U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz’s command sergeant major. Landan was sworn into the U.S. Army in a
ceremony held at Rhine Ordnance Barracks, Kaiserslautern, March 9. Col. Reid Furman, USAG Rheinland-Pfalz’s commander, provided remarks and read the Oath of Enlistment, a pledge to support and defend the Constitution of the United States throughout one’s military career. “In 1993, a very young Stephen LaRocque joined the Army, following in his father’s footsteps,” Furman said. “Today, it is my honor to swear Landan LaRocque into the same Army both Command Sgt. Maj. LaRocque and I grew up in.” “Back then, the motto was ‘Be all you can be.’ I think it’s very fitting that, as of yesterday, the Army has returned to that motto,” he continued. “I am very proud of you and your decision to serve.”
Raised in a military family, Landan grew up all over the United States. After graduating high school, he got a job and while he was working, thought about going to college, but he just couldn’t decide on any one specific degree program. “It is good to know that, if I do decide to go to college later, I will be able to pay for it thanks to the G.I. Bill,” he said. “I really want my dad to be proud of me,” he continued. “It feels good to join the Army, because he is in the Army, and his dad was in the Army too — I will be carrying on that tradition.” LaRocque expressed how proud he is of his son. “The sky’s the limit,” he said. “I am really happy for you and very excited about your future.”
Army Command Finland hosted logisticians and planners from the 21st Theater Sustainment Command and U.S. Army Europe and Africa during a Land Forces Partnership Working Group at Karkialampi Army Base in March, to strengthen relationships and chart a path toward improved interoperability. Maj. Ramon Cabrera, 21st TSC Theater Movements Center, said the working group established important personal connections, identified opportunities for increased cooperation and developed actionable next steps. “Coming together in a forum like this is important because even though we are two different countries, when it comes to logistics, we want to make sure we speak the same language,” said Cabrera. “We are building a common understanding about logistics needs to ensure we can fulfill the operational objectives of our bilateral cooperation.” Finnish Defence Forces Logistics Command Chief of Operations, Col. Mika Multanen, regarded the working group as a positive step in reaffirming the relationship between commands. “I think this has been very successful,” said Multanen. “I’ve seen and met people I’ve wanted to meet for months.” Multanen said a shared
understanding of procedures helps identify the best way forward to ensure effective cooperation. “The most important [objective] was that we open those lines of communication,” said Multanen. He added that meeting in person strengthens mutual understanding. “If you are just conducting [business] with emails, it’s not a personal way to conduct [business],” he said. “When we see each other, we understand each other better. If we are not talking just about… business, but we are talking also about other things, it makes us closer. It is a more human way to act.” Cabrera agreed that meeting face to face and working with Finnish Soldiers and members of the Finnish Defence Forces was professionally and personally rewarding, and directly supports 21st TSC’s mission in the European Theater. “We are building those interpersonal networks and shared understanding that will help us rapidly and efficiently RSOM (reception, staging and onward movement) in Finland and the Baltic region as a whole.” 21st Theater Sustainment Command is U.S. Army Europe and Africa’s lead organization for all sustainment activities including logistics support, transportation, combat sustainment, human resources, finance, contracting and all other areas in the field of sustainment. load. They’re tallying every piece of equipment that comes off the vessel and where it’s destined for ultimately here in Europe. On this operation, we have seven different forward operating sites that we’re supporting, which is quite a lot.” The U.S. Army equipment will stage at the port facility and subsequently move via rail and commercial trucking to follow-on locations
in central and eastern Europe. Blue Angels get a little help from their friends
by Department of Defense News When it comes to choreographed spectacles, it’s hard to beat the precision of a military demonstration team — unless, that is, you’ve got members of two military demonstration teams performing together. The Navy’s flight demonstration squadron, the Blue Angels, teamed up with fellow units for two separate
events as it got performance-ready for its 2023 season. The squadron’s F/A-18 Super Hornets flew with their Air Force counterparts, the Thunderbirds’ F-16 Fighting Falcons, during a joint training exchange in California. And the Blue Angels’ transport aircraft, a C-130J affectionately known as “Fat Albert,” joined the Marine Corps Silent Drill Platoon for a photoshoot in Arizona.

The run starts at the Stadthalle in Otterberg, in close proximity to the impressive Abteikirche. Various distances are available: a full marathon with a distance of 42 km starts between 7.30-8 a.m. The half marathon 22 km starts between 8 and 9 a.m. and the trail hike between 9 and 9.30 a.m. Whether you run or walk at a leisurely pace, the trail will lead you through pristine forest areas and stretches across open fields, passing historic border stones, menhirs and ponds. It offers breathtaking views such as the Donnersberg, the Pfalz region’s highest peak. There will be stations with refreshments and checkpoints along the way. 2. Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, Milan, Italy
Milan is up there with the other great European cities of London, Madrid, Munich and Paris. Milan is the powerhouse of Italian industry and finance. It is also the world’s capital for style and fashion, which means it is no wonder that Milan has an outsized reputation. Home to Gucci, Armani, D&G and Versace, as well as some of the most successful soccer teams in Europe, and based in a truly historical city, then you have a place that is a pleasure to spend a few days in. One thing you will notice when in Milan, however, is not the industry or soccer stadium, but the beautiful buildings. These include the superb Duomo in the heart of the city, as well as small centuriesold churches that adorn its narrow streets. Here are my five great things to see in Milan: 1. El Duomo and the Piazza El Duomo is one of the most spectacular sights in Europe and is the world’s third largest church. It is the centerpiece of Milan and the piazza (square) in front only adds to the grandeur. This huge cathedral is full of spires as if trying to puncture the sky, 135 of them to be exact! The 14th century cathedral took more than 500 years to complete and with over 3,500 statues it is no wonder. Every nook and cranny has some strange looking gargoyle or saint looking back at you. As impressive as it is from the piazza out front, it is even more impressive when you take a walk up to the roof and see the spires, gargoyles and even the Alps on a clear day. 2. Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II and La Scala Opera One of the oldest shopping malls in the world is located beside one of the oldest operas. This is only a stone’s throw from El Duomo and is why the center of Milan is so pleasant to walk around. The Gallery was opened in 1867 and is a beautiful mixture of glass and metal. Today, it houses some of the world’s most exclusive stores. Unless you own your own boat, you probably won’t be able to afford to buy anything in the shops (well, maybe a ridiculously priced coffee), but it is still worth a browse through to see how the other half live. Just outside one of the exits of La Galleria is Piazza della Scala, which has a statue of Leonardo Da Vinci and of course Teatro La Scala. This famous theater is over 200 years old and still is one of the world’s premier theaters. 3. The Last Supper You more than likely know the painting of Jesus with his twelve disciples at his

last supper. Well, this iconic painting by Leonardo da Vinci is in Milan in the Santa Maria della Grazie church. Arguably the greatest painting of the Renaissance is a huge piece of work measuring 4.6m x 8.8m (15ft x 29ft) and has survived being used as target practice, being part of a military barracks and World War II (where the other half of the church got blown up). How it is still around is a miracle in itself. To see the painting, you need to book a viewing time at the church, which is easiest when incorporated into a city tour. 4. is another architectural wonder. This redbricked citadel today houses eight different museums, including Michelangelo’s last sculpture and Da Vinci’s ‘Codex Trivulzianus’ manuscript. The scale of the castle is breathtaking. It includes a now dry moat, 70-meter-high towers, and walls that are nearly three kilometers long, 31 meters high and four meters thick. Even if you don’t head into Piazza d’Armi, you can still enjoy the surrounding park of Parco Sempione. 5. The San Siro As mentioned earlier, Milan is the powerhouse of Italian industry and soccer. interesting, heading to a soccer match most certainly is. Italy is one of the world’s best soccer nations and in the 85,000 seater stadium of the San Siro they have the home of both AC-Milan and Inter Milan (Internazionale) which are some of Italy’s and Europe’s top clubs. They have both won the European Cup (Europe’s best club competition) multiple times. The season runs from September to May each year and with both of them playing at home on alternate weekends there is always a game to go to. If you can get your hands on tickets to the Milan derby between the two you are in for one rousing evening.
