W
ith W-2s and 1040s on many people’s minds, it is that time of year again — tax season. Taxes can be a daunting endeavor despite all of the resources available. To help alleviate that stress, more than 60 volunteers at the Ramstein Tax Center work through the months of February to June to save Airmen money. The tax center offers free filing of federal and state taxes for service members, retirees and dependents in the KMC, which saves them money and helps reduce the confusion of filing on their own. Volunteers saved active-duty military members at Ramstein more than $170,000 in extra fees in 2013, filed more than 1,200 tax returns and refunded them more than $2.5 million. “I enjoy volunteering to help with taxes,” said Senior Airman Ashley Cassell, 86th Airlift Wing judge advocate tax paralegal. “It was intimidating at first to think about dealing with taxes, but it is rewarding to help people learn what they are eligible to claim and making sure they are filing correctly.” Volunteers attend a 40-hour week-

interest, rental properties and international returns. Tax center volunteers are required, at a minimum, to be certified on military tax returns. Volunteers help a wide variety of

With that, service members are faced with an overwhelming amount of choices on how to file their returns, said Airman 1st Class Destin Coleman, 86th Communications Squadron administrative apprentice. “Being that it was my first time filing my taxes it was a little bit confusing,” Coleman said. “I am not very educated in finances, but you are responsible for getting involved when they are your own. I tried to file on my own prior to my appointment, but I had a lot of questions. The volunteers here were able to help me understand my return while filing my taxes for free.” Free tax filing is not only helpful to junior Airmen during their first tax return, but it is also beneficial to those in need of a helping hand in the midst of a busy schedule. “My experience at the tax center has been great,” said Master Sgt. Cornelius Richardson, 86th Aircraft Maintenance Squadron flight chief. “The volunteers have been very professional and helped me understand everything about my refund. I’m glad they’re here for us. When you are overseas with your family, a lot of the time you are busy with work and getting to your taxes is hard. Having someone to help you is much appreciated.” While helping service members save when they can, volunteers at the tax center hope to enrich the quality of life for military members and their families through their services. Although military members stationed overseas are allotted an additional two months to file, taxes owed are still due no later than April 15; otherwise, interest will be accrued. ‘Gone phishing’ email exercise tests cybersecurity on Ramstein by Kimberly Parker 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs

irmen were put to the test when the 86th Airlift Wing inspector general and the 86th Communications Squadron executed a cybersecurity phishing email exercise Feb. 26 on Ramstein. The purpose of the exercise was two-fold: to test network users’ computer training and readiness and to test the responses of both the information assurance office and the unit information assurance officer. Phishing emails are crafted to look genuine and are tools for cyber criminals to use in order to gain access to a computer or network. They attempt to trick users into unwittingly opening attachments or clicking on links that lead to malware and viruses that can compromise computers. In this exercise the email was titled, “Changes to military retirement,” and was sent from the organization “Ramstein/A1.” While USAFE/A1 is a legitimate organization designation, Ramstein/A1 is fictitious. This was done intentionally to demonstrate that cyber criminals do research and try to closely mimic facts, said Capt. Jesse Nelson, 86th CS operations flight commander. “The goal was to make the email as realistic and believable as possible,” he said. “Gone are the days of the obvious (phishing) attempts.” Master Sgt. Annette Owens and Master Sgt. Anthony Ford, both lead wing readiness inspection planners for the 86th IG office, worked with
Nelson and the 86th CS Information Assurance and Cyber Vulnerability offices to carefully craft the exercise. Nelson explained there were two primary warning signs users should have questioned: first, the fictitious email sender, “Ramstein A/1,” and second, the attachment contained in the email that was not digitally signed. “This was a good opportunity to really test our user computer security training and demonstrate the importance,” Nelson said. “It only takes one person to compromise the network.” Owens also added that the exercise was a good reminder for all users to be more vigilant when it comes to cybersecurity and protecting the network. It is important to maintain mission readiness. “It is important to remember that our network is only as strong as our weakest link,” Ford said. The inspection team provided a few tips to help protect the network: Always look for a digital signature, be more skeptical and vigilant, and review the response card that should be located next to the computer. Nelson also added that it is important to remember that network security is not just something the communication squadron takes care of — it is a shared responsibility and starts with the user. Ford gave credit to the cyber vulnerability management office that worked hard to ensure the exercise was a success. The team crafted a well-designed phishing email that became an eye-opener for many after it caught them hook, line and sinker. Results for the inspection are still being compiled.
He closed his remarks by emphasizing the importance of airpower and how these Airmen epitomize the dedication to the U.S. Air Force, defense of our nation and NATO allies. Airmen competed within their units, and then at wing level and have now been named the best in the command. T
he Air Force recently named a Ramstein Airman as one of its best medical service members in 2014. Tech. Sgt. Jessica Green, U.S. Air Forces in Europe and Air Forces Africa surgeon general resource adviser, was awarded the Outstanding Enlisted Health Services Management Noncommissioned Officer of the Year for 2014 for excelling in her major command and local community. “It’s a complete shock, because there are so many outstanding resource advisers here,” Green said. “To be recognized for what you do is an amazing feeling. I know I don’t represent myself; I represent (resource managers) as a whole.” Green’s job is to take care of nearly 34,000 military and civilian Airmen by ensuring there is no lapse in care by managing the money for medical services in Europe and Africa. She sees the money is sent to the right locations and is distributed to medical facilities that need it. “If I don’t do my job, then medical services won’t be there for military members or dependents,” Green said. “Knowing that I have a direct impact on patients’ care makes me feel really good.” She conducted congressionally

mandated audits that came back with zero discrepancies. She also recouped $400,000 and reallocated $300,000 back into USAFE-AFAFRICA from $7 million worth of contracts. “The level of genuine dedication to her duties and fellow Airmen goes beyond words,” said Master Sgt. Frederik White, USAFE-AFAFRICA surgeon general medical resources and support branch NCO in charge. “She truly epitomizes the whole Airman concept. She is well deserving of the award; it feels great to see
this NCO recognized for all that she does every day.” She is happy with the work she does during the duty day, but Green said she is also proud of developing future leaders as a work of duty and volunteering. As the KMC 5/6 president, Green raised more than $90,000 for seven organizations and four wounded warrior programs. She also helped develop future leaders with leadership management courses and cochaired the Total Force Development
Council, a body of Airmen dedicated to improving KMC service members. “When I am able to do work and volunteer with the (KMC), it’s always rewarding,” Green said. “Being able to have an impact makes me proud.” Green said she is thankful for the support she gets from her friends, co-workers and family in helping her receive the award, but she said she also knows she must lead by example and continue striving for perfection.
AF waives renters insurance obligation in privatized housing by Breanne Smith Air Force Civil Engineer Center Public Affairs JOINT BASE SAN ANTONIO-LACKLAND, Texas — Airmen signing a lease to live in privatized homes on base may no longer be covered by a renters insurance provision, due to a recent Department of Defense change in basic allowance for housing. The Department of Defense opted to eliminate the renters insurance component of BAH, an average of $20 dollars each month per member, as of Jan. 1. As a result of the BAH reduction, the Air Force removed requirements to provide renters insurance to military tenants at no cost previously included in privatized housing projects — a decision made to protect both Airmen and the housing program, said Mark Correll, the Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Air Force for Environment, Safety and Infrastructure. “Cuts to BAH inevitably affect the program in some manner,” he said. “When that happens, it’s our job to ensure adequate funding for the homes, core services and amenities in our housing communities.”
The policy change doesn’t negate current lease obligations to provide renters insurance. It does, however, allow housing project owners the flexibility to independently decide if they will continue to provide renters insurance as part of a new or renewed lease. As a result, Airmen who live in privatized housing may have to purchase renters insurance out of pocket, as their colleagues who live off base currently do. Although the Air Force doesn’t require Airmen to maintain independent rental insurance coverage, Correll said it has always been highly recommended for all Airmen, whether they live on or off base, to fully cover their personal property and provide liability coverage. “Under the Claims Act, the government provides up to $40,000 worth of coverage to all Airmen who live in privatized housing situated on government-owned land,” he said, “However, it does not apply at a few projects where some or all of the privatized housing is located on private land. Also, that coverage only applies to personal belongings; it does not provide liability coverage and reimbursements may be limited under the Claims Act. Liability coverage is recommended to cover damage you, your pet or your belongings might cause to the house and other property.”
Local housing management or legal offices can help Airmen understand how the Act applies to their situation. The Housing Privatization Program, managed by the Air Force Civil Engineer Center, uses private sector financing and expertise to provide necessary housing faster and more efficiently than traditional military construction processes allow. Today, the Air Force’s HP program boasts more than 53,000 high-quality homes in its inventory, a success that Robert Moriarty, the AFCEC installations director, attributes to careful planning and investment protection. “More than $8 billion has been invested in this program with the expectation that these developments will last 50 years,” he said. “That includes the cost of initial construction, renovations, maintenance and operation, as well as the costs associated with out-year development and sustainment plans — all of this depends on income from the BAH.” The Air Force remains committed to providing quality housing communities where Air Force families will choose to live, Moriarty said. VRET helps resolve PTSD by recreating traumatic events by Chuck Roberts Landstuhl Regional Medical Center Public Affairs For those who think they are suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, a new form of help is available at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center where they can recreate the look, sounds and smells of a deployed environment to help patients revisit and cope with events that have affected them so profoundly. Approximately 30 patients have been treated with positive results through the Virtual Reality Exposure Therapy program since it was donated to LRMC last October by the Wounded Warrior Project. Results have been good, said Maj. (Dr.) Michael Valdovinos, chief of outpatient behavioral health. “It’s an extremely effective treatment because it is a patient’s personalized reality that they learn to process, control and regulate,” Valdovinos said. “Visual memory is powerful, and if I can use that to help patients create their own movie scene, then they can move into it to rewrite their own script.” The outpatient behavioral health

friend during a firefight in a building where they were ambushed. Valdovinos said they were able to recreate the scenario of the building, and when the service member “walked” into the building for the first time since the incident, he was very
anxious at first, but was able to remain in the virtual doorway of the building for about 15 minutes. The service member experienced the scenario over and over again until he was able to enter the building and move around with mortars going off and insurgents attacking in the streets below. Valdovinos said this repetition of virtually recreating the anxietyproving event helps decrease the anxiety symptoms and fear surrounding it. At the same time, it’s helping service members learn to process the negative thoughts surrounding the trauma. LRMC has the Army’s largest outpatient behavioral health clinic in Europe and is the only Army installation in Europe to offer VRET. The Landstuhl Outpatient Behavioral Health Clinic also offers the capability using this innovative therapy to teach mindfulness and other relaxation techniques. JA warns against office betting pools Courtesy of the 86th Airlift Wing Judge Advocate Office March Madness is here, and though it is an exciting time of year, it can also be a potentially dangerous time for Airmen who are unaware of Department of Defense regulations regarding gambling. With the beginning of the NCAA basketball tournament, many will be creating brackets and betting money on their picks to win each round, but before putting your money in an office pool, the following guidance is important to remember. According to the Joint Ethics Regulation (DOD 5500.7-R), DOD employees shall neither participate in gambling activities while on base nor while on duty. This includes both military and civilian personnel.
Gambling has been found to consist of three elements: an activity requiring payment or wagering something of value, an element of “chance” and a goal to win a reward or prize. Although some Airmen may believe their bracket picks involve a level of skill, there is simply too much of an element of chance involved. NCAA tournament betting is gambling. Also, officers need to remember that gambling with a subordinate may constitute a violation of Articles 133 and 134 of the Uniform Code of Military Justice. The potential for this to occur is much higher when participating in an office pool. It is not worth risking your career. Furthermore, DOD personnel should not use their office computers to bet during March Madness or at any other time. Besides violating the Joint Ethics Regulation, this might be considered a misuse of government property.
For example, there was an instance where a group of people ran a fantasy football league on their government computers. Each member paid $10 to play, and the winner was obligated to buy pizza for the rest of the group, actually spending more than he even won. The members only participated in the fantasy football league during breaks and at lunch time; however, this was still found to be gambling. These activities were also a misuse of government resources because the computers were government property. If anyone is considering betting on the NCAA tournament, they should remain informed about Air Force regulations regarding such activities. Those who are unsure if a gambling-type activity is permitted should contact the Staff Judge Advocate’s office at 480-5911.
CSH gets creative with physical readiness training by Capt. Mary Andrea Ugaddan 212th Combat Support Hospital Public Affairs The 212th Combat Support Hospital celebrated Resolute Day Feb. 27 with a challenging and creative physical readiness training session focused on Comprehensive Soldier and Family Fitness in support of the Army’s ready and resilient campaign plan. Working as a team to achieve the highest cumulative points, Soldiers navigated through a total of five stations: caterpillar pushup, guerilla drill, Humvee push, sandbag relay and pull ups. During the caterpillar pushup, the team formed a circle and had their feet on the next person’s shoulder. Each push up completed as a unit earned points. For the guerilla drill, the team did a set of lunges, shoulder rolls and fireman’s carry for 50 meters to score. For the Humvee challenge, the team scored one point for every Humvee pushed for a distance of 200 meters. The sandbag relay was next, where each 15-pound sandbag carried one lap around the track (roughly 320 meters) earned a point. At the pullup bars, for every three pullups, a teamscored a point. A platoon from 212th CSH Headquarters Detachment won the event with a score of 976 points followed by a platoon from B Company in second place with 833 points. The finale was a mystery event, which was later revealed as tug of war between officers and senior noncomissioned officers against the staff sergeants and below. B Company staff sergeants and below emerged as the tug of war champions.

Resolute Day is the last day of Hospital Readiness Week when all of its Soldiers, a great majority of whom are health care providers at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center, train together. It is an excellent time for Soldiers to experience the tenets of the Comprehensive Soldier and Family Fitness firsthand, building resilience and enhancing performance through the five dimensions of strength: social, emotional, family, physical and spiritual. Once every quarter, the CSH conducts a physical readiness training incorporating the principles of Comprehensive Soldier and Family Fitness. Under the guidance of 212th CSH Command Sgt. Maj. Michael Howard, events are conceptualized and executed through the unit’s master resiliency trainer and the unit ministry team. In the past, the CSH participated in zumba as well as a battle-focused team obstacle course with resilien-
cy pointers creatively injected in the physical readiness training. The 160th Forward Surgical Team took the lead in planning, organizing and executing this quarter’s fun, innovative and challenging Resolute Day physical readiness training. When asked how they came up with the idea, Maj. Gustavo Moreno, commander of the 160th, said the Comprehensive Soldier and Family Fitness calls for “applying the team concept in everyday activities and not only when there is a mission.” “The relay course was a great opportunity for Soldiers to problemsolve and think critically as a team,” said Sgt. David Renfroe, one of the NCOs who conceptualized the event. Pfc. Ian Harrison, a B Company medic who has been with the CSH since April 2014, said, “Today’s physical readiness training event was the best team building experience I’ve had since being with CSH.”

“I’m very excited about the assignment,” Firch said. “I will get the opportunity to lead at more of a level that has a strategic impact on the Army band field and how it supports the overall mission of the Army.” For Army band members, there are only eight sergeants major throughout the entire Army, and of those eight, only one is nominated to be the command sergeant major of the Army School of Music. “He’s an excellent choice for (command sergeant major) of the Army School of Music,” said Sgt. Maj. Pedro Quiñones, the USAREUR Band and Chorus sergeant major. “I competed for that board as well and when his name came up I was covered with mixed emotions. I was sad that I didn’t get selected, but happy that Firch was. It is definitely right on point that he was selected for that position.” “He’s an awesome leader and I think he’s going to bring a new perspective to the school of music and I think he’s definitely up for the challenge,” Hobson added. Firch’s appointment as the command sergeant major of the Army School of Music will go a long way in helping him reinforce his conviction that the Army music program is a valuable component to the Army family. “I’m really passionate about the Army music program and how we contribute to the overall mission of the Army,” Firch said. “It’s a passion of mine to ensure that Army music stays relevant, ready and utilized by other organizations.”

ommand Sgt. Maj. Rodney J. Rhoades, senior enlisted leader of the 21st Theater Sustainment Command, recognized a military police member for his integrity and doing the right thing during a gathering March 5 on Sembach Kaserne. The command sergeant major frequently recognizes his Soldiers for stellar performance, but this presentation was unique. Rhoades recognized the young MP for writing him a parking ticket. While on patrol earlier this month, Pvt. Connor Stennett, an MP with the 92nd MP Company, 709th MP Battalion and 18th MP Brigade, issued Rhoades a parking citation for parking in a loading zone at the Landstuhl Regional Medical Center. “We have to do what’s right, and I applaud you each and every day for doing what’s right,” Rhoades said to Stennett and the other MPs of the 92nd. Soldier and an MP, sometimes it can be difficult to do the right thing when it comes to dealing with senior leadership. “He did exactly what a professional law enforcement officer would do,” said 1st Sgt. Edgar Ford, 92nd MP Co. first sergeant. “We’re very proud of him. He hasn’t been here very long, but he’s motivated and he’s
out there trying to make a difference.” For Rhoades, receiving the parking citation was a chance for him to identify something he was doing wrong and make a correction. “Five times I parked there after seeing others do the same thing,” Rhoades said. “I followed what everybody else was doing.” “After receiving the ticket I
looked up at this big pole and it said, ‘Drop off and pick up zone only,’” Rhoades continued. “He took care of me. Five times I parked there and I was taking away from someone dropping off or picking up their children. I don’t want to do that, but I wasn’t paying attention.” Rhoades added that Stennett did the right thing in intervening and that it’s
important for military members, regardless of rank, to understand that no one is above the law. “He gave me a ticket that made me recognize and identify something I wasn’t paying attention to,” Rhoades said. “He did his job and it matters.” For the Soldiers of the 92nd, Stennett’s actions were not any different than how each member is expected to act. “We want to provide professional law enforcement to the community and, if we’re doing that, then rank or position doesn’t matter,” Ford said. “The only thing that matters is what is presented in front of the police officer.” While Stennett did not recognize right away who he was issuing the parking citation to, he said that given any other situation or someone of any other rank he “wouldn’t have done anything different.” For Stennett, having Rhoades personally travel to the 92nd and speak to the company meant a lot to him and the other Soldiers. “I feel pretty honored,” Stennett said. “I am just fresh out of (advanced individual training) and it was nice to be recognized for doing my job.”
US, German logistics commands renew partnership by Ronnie Schelby 21st Theater Sustainment Command Public Affairs Maj. Gen. John O’Connor, 21st Theater Sustainment Command commander, and Maj. Gen. Hans Erich Antoni, Bundeswehr Logistics Command commander, signed a Memorandum of Agreement March 5 at Panzer Kaserne. This event marked the first formal renewal of the U.S.German military logistics partnership in almost 20 years. The world was different 20 years ago. At that time, NATO involvement overseas focused on reforger missions. These Cold War-era exercises were conducted to ensure that NATO could deploy forces overseas quickly, if needed. “Reforger exercises demonstrated NATO alliance resolve that countered communist threats to peace, freedom and prosperity,” O’Connor said.
“Today’s challenges, in what only can be described as an increasingly destabilizing global security environment, can best be tackled by identifying common ground among partners and by pursuing a mutually beneficial cooperation in selected areas,” Antoni said. “In our case, in the area of military logistics.” The renewal of the partnership agreement comes at a time in which the Army is focused on improving military interoperability and capacity with partners and allies in Europe — a concept coined “Strong Europe.” Formal NATO partnerships are central to the Strong Europe framework. “They (help) educate, train and develop leaders, increasing readiness and enabling the alliance,” O’Connor said. “Our bilateral agreement testifies to the strength and power of our shared vision. he Irish celebrate a national and religious holiday Monday — St. Patrick’s Day. St. Patrick’s Day is a day to honor Ireland’s first Christian missionary. March 17 is also an official holiday in Northern Ireland, the British overseas territory of Montserrat and the Canadian province of Newfoundland. Even in many other countries, Irish emigrants and even nonIrish celebrate the day with festivals, parades and other events. The St. Patrick’s Day custom came to America in 1737. The first parade with 770 participants was held in 1843 in
Chicago. Today, more than 100 cities in the states hold St. Patrick’s Day parades, the largest of which is in New York City. In Germany, the Irish in Munich hold their 20th St. Patrick’s Day parade starting at noon Sunday from Münchner Freiheit leading to Odeonsplatz. At 12:45 p.m., a shamrock will be blessed and dignitaries will hold speeches before and after a parade party with an entertaining program that will continue until 5:30 p.m. Another event highlighting St. Patrick’s Day will be the “Greening Flash Mob.” Visitors are asked to wear something green, come to Marienplatz and watch how the lights of Munich’s city hall change to green at 6:15 p.m. Tuesday.

He was never interested in God or the church, but being away from home and all alone, he turned to God and learned to pray while herding sheep. After being a slave for six years, Patrick dreamed that God told him it was time to go home. So he escaped on foot across 200 miles of unknown land. After an adventurous sea voyage, he finally returned home. A couple of months later he visited St. Martin’s monastery at Tours and the island sanctuary of Lerins. Patrick placed himself under the guidance of a bishop, St. Germain. Several years later he was promoted to priesthood. He engaged in missionary works, and after the bishop recommended Patrick to the Pope, he traveled to Rome. Pope Celestine entrusted Patrick with the mission of bringing Christianity to Ireland. Since he learned the Celtic language during his years of slavery, it was easy for him to spread the word of Christianity. He conquered one kingdom after another and destroyed Paganism. Despite several death threats, Patrick baptized, confirmed, preached and built churches, schools and monasteries. St. Patrick was arrested several times, but he managed to escape each time. the entire population of the island. Patrick died on March 17, 461, in Downpatrick, Ireland. That’s why St. Patrick’s Day is celebrated March 17. There are many legends to tell about Patrick. One says he used the shamrock, which resembles a three-leafed clover, to explain the meaning of the trinity. He used it in his sermons to represent how the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit could all exist as separate elements of the same entity. His followers adopted the custom of wearing a shamrock on his feast day. Finding a four-leafed clover on St. Patrick’s Day is supposed to bring double good luck. Kissing the Blarney Stone supposedly brings the kisser the gift of persuasive eloquence. The stone is set in the wall of the castle tower in the Irish village of Blarney. It is hard to reach being between the main castle wall and the parapet. Kissers have to lie on their backs and bend back-

The origins of the Blarney Stone’s magical properties aren’t clear, but one legend says that an old woman cast a spell on the stone to reward a king who had saved her from drowning. Also associated with the Irish holiday are leprechauns. Otherwise known as Irish fairies, leprechauns are small, unsociable, unfriendly men, who live alone. They are dressed like shoemakers, with a cocked hat and a leather apron. Legend says they possess a hidden pot of gold. If the leprechaun is caught by a treasure hunter, he must give the hunter the location of the gold. If the leprechaun can trick the hunter and vanish, all hopes of finding the treasure are lost. The color green is associated with St. Patrick’s Day because it is the color of spring, a shamrock and a color in Ireland’s flag. In many countries, people wear something green. School children started a tradition of their own — pinching classmates who forgot to wear green.

Spring market, car exhibition lures visitors by Petra Lessoing 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs On Saturday and Sunday, Kaiserslautern’s advertising association, Kaiser in Lautern, will offer a spring market combined with a car exhibition and Sunday shopping. The city of Kaiserslautern is co-sponsoring the event as a way to say goodbye to winter and promote local businesses. The annual event called “Lautern bursts into bloom,” will highlight the beginning of spring with a variety of activities, stage performances, fashions shows and food specialties in the center of town both Saturday and Sunday. “We expect several thousands of visitors and want to show them what all we have to offer,” said Alexander Hess, chief of the Kaiserslautern advertising association. On Sunday, stores will be open from 1 to 6 p.m., and a car exhibition will display the latest vehicles on Stiftsplatz.

Stores, restaurant and pub owners, as well as other various institutions, will present a diversified program to entertain and lure costumers and families asking them to take part in numerous activities and enjoy special offers. “The traditional primrose pyramid will be set up on Schillerplatz,” Hess
said. “We will pass out more than 3,000 primroses to visitors.” Other activities will include local sports clubs presenting performances on a stage at Schillerplatz. The clubs ask that visitors take part in “Fit in Lautern.” A local dancing school, ballet studio and square dance club will also be there to entertain the audience.

The group is traveling the world to thank military members and their families for what they do. “America’s military — men and women who represent the best of our communities — is serving in all corners of the globe to protect our great nation and our freedoms,” Winnefeld said. “As we embark on this eight-day seven-country USO tour, our group of athletes and entertainers will express their personal gratitude to those serving by sharing their talents.” Though the celebrities were only on the ground at Ramstein for three hours, they still made time to
visit service members at the 37th Airlift Squadron and Kaiserslautern Military Community Center, where they performed for an audience of several hundred. “It’s great to be here with all these service men and service women,” said Luck, quarterback for the Indianapolis Colts. “I have a high respect for what the military does, what the men and women sacrifice for our country. We really appreciate everything they do.” The tour is designed to be a moment-filled trip, complete with high-energy shows and memorable base visits. For many service members the design was perfect, creating a moment they would never forget.
“It’s a fantastic experience and one I will remember for the rest of my life,” said Airman 1st Class Scott Braun, 86th Aerospace Medicine Squadron bioenvironmental engineering technician. “It was great to have American celebrities and stars bring us a slice of home to Germany. They are a fantastic group of people who seemed like they wanted and really enjoyed being here and talking to the military members.” Ramstein was the first stop for the group, and though they only got a small taste of the mission here, they will no doubt see the impact the armed forces makes around the world and the influence their visit will have on those serving away from home.

KMC Eagles soar together, build camaraderie Story and photo by Airman 1st Class Tryphena Mayhugh 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Banding together, forging lasting bonds and rising up to face adversity head-on are concepts often related to the armed forces, but these connections are not limited to the battlefield - at least not the traditional ones. The KMC Eagles formed such a bond in a hockey rink, and it spread to other aspects of their lives. “All cliches aside, we play to have fun,” said Staff Sgt. Adam Sacchetti, 86th Security Forces Squadron unit fitness program manager and KMC Eagles coach. “This is a team that’s like a family. Airmen come and go, but the players make the most of what we have by not only playing the sport we all love, but also volunteering and helping within the community.” For many players on the team, putting on the jersey and giving everything to back up fellow teammates on the ice is only half the job. “The best time to be an Eagle is when we are out in the community doing various events,” said Staff Sgt. Brandyn Shelly, 86th Vehicle Readiness Squadron unit material control purchasing agent and player for the team. “We have an opportunity to know the real person under the jersey and a chance to make a difference in their lives. It brings us together as a family. “The Eagles come out in full force to events around the community,” Shelly continued. “We participate in events from 5Ks to cooking for wounded warriors to raising money for charities around the KMC. The Eagles family will be there and do anything we can to help others.”
Knowing that time can be a limitation for some members who may only be in the area for a season or two, the players do what they can to keep morale high and provide an environment that allows the team to feel like equals. “Rank doesn’t apply here,” Sacchetti said. “I’m not a staff sergeant; I’m just Adam, or ‘Boston’ as some may say. We have junior enlisted to colonels, retirees, dependents and spouses alike. When it comes to the ice, you suit up and you are a fellow Eagle.” A close-knit team can provide rewards on the ice as much as it can for the member’s personal lives. The Eagles faced off against teams from all across Europe in the Armed Forces Alpine Classic Hockey Tournament Feb. 12 to 14 in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany, and ultimately won, becoming the 23rd annual AFAC Division 1 Champions. “It’s the most coveted trophy to win here,” Sacchetti said. “You have real bragging rights, because the winner is known as the best armed forces team in Europe. It says a lot about our team, but it also says a lot about the KMC. As those final 10 seconds ticked off the clock and we won the championship 4-2, it defined the result of our hard work. The Eagles organization also created the Cuddeback Cup, which is an annual hockey tournament hosted by the KMC Eagles. “We invite up to 14 teams from all over Germany to participate in this competition in honor of Cuddeback,” Sacchetti said. “Fortunately, in the two times this tournament has occurred thus far, we are the two-time defending champs.” As another way to show respect, more than 20 members of the Eagles

The Otterbach-Otterberg union community sponsors its first Hinkelstein hiking marathon/trail March 22 from Abbey Church in Otterberg.

It hits the Eagles especially hard because he played for the Eagles and was a part of our hockey family. Participating in the memorial run is just one of the ways that we can remember him and his time with the KMC Eagles.” Though the Eagles 1 team may be constantly changing members, the feelings of camaraderie and fellowship continue to be passed along as the next players come in, teaching the next generation to give 100 percent to the team, the community and the Air Force.

Prepare HR-related paperwork for employees and assist in HR-related matters. Manage the maintenance and utilization of leased assets such as copying machines and telephones. Order, receive, distribute, and inventory gift shop items and theme park tickets. Assist employees with utilization of software programs for timesheets, USO classes, and performance reviews. Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with co-workers, volunteers, and military and civilian leaders in the community. Serves as Building Coordinator for the Garrison. • Represent the USO at community events such as information fairs and community support events. • Other duties as assigned

Must be a strong advocate of the USO’s mission to lift the spirits of America’s troops and their families. High School diploma required; some college preferred. Must possess a valid USAREUR driver’s license and be able to drive a fleet vehicle. Must be able to lift, hold, and carry heavy boxes weighing up to 30 pounds. Demonstrated proficiency in written and oral communications as well as knowledge of various software programs including but not limited to Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook.
