March 12, 2021 | Volume 45, Number 10 Story and photos by Airman 1st Class Taylor Slater 86th Airlift Wing/Public Affairs Despite the namesake, airspace remains a great untamable mass to the Air Force. Many favorable variables must come together to make a successful flight, and many teams must cooperate to make a successful airdrop. “The sky, even more than the sea, is an unforgiving environment,” said Master Sgt. Jim Burke, 435th Contingency Response Squadron airfield manager. Without the collaboration of several agencies, including the 37th Airlift Squadron, 86th Operations Support Squadron, and the 5th Quartermaster Company, the successful personnel air drop of 30 435th Contingency Response Group and 5th QM personnel on Ramstein airfield Feb. 18 would not have been possible. By February, jumping had become a necessity for the 435th CRG. Airborne personnel are required to jump every quarter to remain current on their training See JUMP OPS, Page 3

Joint service collaborations lead to successful jump ops on Ramstein airfield

Paratroopers jump from a C-130J Super Hercules at Ramstein Air Base, Feb. 18. U.S. Air Force Airmen from the 37th AS, 86th Operations Support Squadron, 435th Contingency Response Group and U.S. Army Soldiers from the 5th Quartermaster Company worked together to make the personnel airdrop possible.

PT test pushed to July: updates to scoring, physical components ahead by By Secretary of the Air Force Public Affairs Physical fitness assessments will now resume for Airmen on July 1. Testing was initially delayed from October 2020 to April 2021 to ensure the health and safety of Airmen during the COVID-19 pandemic and to ensure social distancing practices remained in place. When assessments resume, the three-component fitness test (1.5 mile run, 1 minute of push-

ups and sit-ups) will be reset with scores calculated on a new three component scoring table. In addition, work is underway to separate scoring into five-year age groups as opposed to the previous ten – for example, age groups will start at <25, 25-29 years old, 30-34, years old, etc. These changes come in addition to other modifications to the physical fitness assessment. In December 2020, the waist measurement as a point-driven component of the fitness assessment test was removed.

It will still be administered to determine compliance with body composition standards, as required by Department of Defense Instruction 1308.3. As testing resumes, scores earned on the three-component fitness test will be redistributed. Final decisions on percentage component breakdowns will become available in June. Additionally, the Air Force Fitness Working Group has explored alternatives to the testing components and scoring measures. As mentioned by

Chief of Staff of the Air Force Gen. Charles Q. Brown, Jr. in December, there are on-going studies and reviews to determine a list of alternative strength and cardio components for the physical fitness assessment. For example, some alternative options being explored for the current components include the 20-meter High Aerobic Multishuttle Run (20M HAMR), row ergometry, planks, burpees and other alternatives. If necessary, commanders may delay official fitness

assessments beyond July 2021 based on the recommendation of local public health officials, the continuation of closed fitness centers and extended statewide restriction of movement and gatherings. “We are also conducting a holistic review of policies associated with the physical fitness assessment program to determine if they are still a good fit for today’s Air Force,” said Lt. Gen. Brian Kelly, Air Force deputy chief See PT TEST, Page 2

COMMENTARY: Anytime is a good time for tea…

the time to connect and address something important. Leading a team can be difficult, but it doesn’t have to be a complicated calculus formula — basic algebra works just fine. Too often we get caught up on thinking that we must read the latest leadership books or take courses to improve our organization and personal skills. Other times we find ourselves quoting inspirational figures like David Goggins, Jocko Willink, or Simon Sinek to plant seeds of ownership and confidence within our followers so we can see whose eyes light up with bewilderment and inspiration. Even though these resources can provide useful tools and additional insights, they don’t get to the root of connecting with our people. One surefire way to

make a positive impact and connect with your team is to intentionally give your time with an open heart and open ears. Sitting down to have a cup of tea (or coffee for those who don’t like tea) with someone offers a time to chat, connect, and cultivate trust. It provides a space in which the chaos can be put on pause, even if it is just for a moment. According to the article “Connect, then Lead” from the Harvard Business Review, there is a growing amount of research that suggests the way to influence and lead is to begin with warmth. “Warmth is the conduit of influence: It facilitates trust and the communication and absorption of ideas. Even a few small nonverbal signals — a nod, a smile, an open gesture — can show people that you’re pleased to be in their company and attentive to their concerns. Prioritizing warmth helps you connect immediately with those around you, demonstrating that you hear them, understand them, and can be trusted by them.” Often Chief Johnson and I hear from our Airmen that they appreciate that we treat them like human

beings and that we take the time to see them as individuals. Thinking back on a conversation I had with one of my Airmen over a year ago — he told me that he finds it odd when leaders want their Airmen to automatically follow them when those leaders don’t take the time to get to know their Airmen and build trust. He said, “If I know you and your heart, I am much more likely to trust you and your vision.” Our Airmen want to see us, share ideas with us, and get to know us!

exploring replacing the system with a newer, more flexible application. In addition to the updates above, diagnostic testing is now available for Airmen to choose when they are ready to test. If an Airman completes a diagnostic physical fitness assessment or a mock test with the Fitness Assessment Cell or Physical

Training leader, and passes, he or she can decide to make the mock test an official test score. According to AFMAN 36-2905, Air Force Physical Fitness Program, the FAC, PTL and Unit Fitness Program Manager are able to conduct the physical assessment for all Airmen, either inside or outside of their unit. Airmen can make their test

official by initialing next to their total score and fitness category section, prior to leaving the testing location. If the member fails the mock test, it will not be officially counted. Airmen may determine their next fitness assessment due date by visiting the Official Physical Assessment Due Date Matrix on myPers which will be updated

by Maj Christine Knieff and CMSgt Russ Johnson 86th Maintenance Squadron If you are a tea lover or have been around the tea culture, it should be no surprise to you when it comes to the social significance placed on serving and having tea. Tea symbolizes hospitality, community, and family tradition. Tea connoisseur Mary Lou Heiss once said, “A simple cup of tea is far from a simple matter.” Having tea can mean sharing joy and sorrow, solving familial or business problems, or simply being present and experiencing life completely. Although a seemingly simple act, sharing a cup of tea is anything but. It is intentionally taking PT TEST from Page 1 of staff for manpower, personnel and services. “This includes a review of who’s accountable for conducting our testing and how it gets administered.” In addition to scheduled Air Force Fitness Management System (AFFMS II) maintenance and updates, the Air Force is

Talk the talk…then walk: Abraham Lincoln was famous for his “walk and sees.” He championed the idea of getting out from behind his desk, talking to the people and seeing for himself how things were going on the front lines. Something as simple as walking around and connecting with his people built trust and credibility — he took the time to show his concern. Credibility starts with the words that come out of your mouth and ends with the actions you take next. This is the very reason some of us would rather take out our own trash or take 30 minutes every week “pick-

ing up brass” on FOD walks with the Airmen. These small actions are the building blocks to creating an organization based on trust and understanding. Showing personal acts of humility can go a long way if done for the right reasons. John Wooden, a former National Championship winning UCLA basketball coach, would sweep his gym floor every week. It was this act of self-service and humility that showed his players that he was not afraid of doing the little things to support the team, making a huge impact within. You don’t have to have tea time with people in your organization in order to build trust and connect. It can be checking ID cards at the gate, picking up FOD on the flight line, or sharing a meal. The point is to find something that helps you connect with your team in a meaningful way. These simple acts are far from being simple — they can mean the world to someone. But…tea is always a good idea. “You want to find your impact, find your broom.” — John Wooden and available shortly. Fitness assessment due dates will primarily depend on the date and score of the last official test. Space Force will follow these policies until service-specific fitness policies are developed and fielded. Future PT test updates will be released as they are available.

March 12, 2021 JUMP OPS from Page 1 and have availability to deploy anywhere in the world at any time. “Jumping out of an aircraft at 1,000 feet while the aircraft’s going 130 knots with a parachute and a reserve requires a certain skill set,” said Burke. “All skills are perishable, so it’s important to keep them current.” Due to COVID-19 guidance and weather cancellations, many airborne personnel have been unable to drop since October. Another cancellation in February prompted the 435th CRG jumpmaster team to reach out to multiple agencies for a short-notice drop on Ramstein’s airfield. To be able to drop, first you have to make sure the airfield is clear, and on a runway that managed about 28,000 operations in 2019 that can be a difficult task. The 86th OSS personnel working in the air traffic control tower were indispensable in making the drop happen. “Clearing the airfield is not exceedingly difficult, but some (realworld) aircraft push the (time) windows,” said Master Sgt. Matthew Cutshall, 86th OSS senior watch supervisor. “We have to try to accommodate them to the maximum extent possible.” Additionally, the 86th OSS was required to publish a notice to Airmen informing them in advance of the activity. To jump out of the aircraft you also need… an aircraft. The 37th Airlift Squadron provided one C-130J Super Hercules aircraft and their crew for the Feb. 18 flight. The 86th Airlift Wing Plans and Programs section was also necessary in getting the plan approved through wing leadership. The 5th QM provided parachutes for airborne personnel. The 435th CRG also had a team on the ground to establish the drop zone marker, monitor wind speeds, and coordinate with other agencies and pilots on whether it was safe for

personnel to drop. All these agencies came together to make the jump of approximately 30 personnel possible, and Burke is happy to call the jump a success. “Every jump you walk away from is a good jump,” Burke said. Moreover, every jump is different. The vast number of combined variables in airspace can make a seemingly tame journey to earth lifethreatening in an instant. Regardless, parachuting is a necessary skill, as one of the 435th CRG’s missions is to establish air mobility or logistics operations anywhere in the world. Jumping allows airborne personnel to keep the mission going. Overall though, Burke believes it’s one of the best ways to commute. “Airborne is the most exciting, terrifying and painful way you could possibly get to work,” Burke said, “but I love it.”

Update on virus variant, Janssen vaccine, DEERs data

by Col (Dr.) Ryan Mihata 86th Medical Group Commander We have been together in this fight against COVID-19 for just over a year now. A year ago this week, I gave Ramstein leadership the first of many medical briefings. During that briefing, I reported just over 1,500 confirmed cases and three deaths in Germany. This week, Germany exceeded 2.5 million cases and is approaching 72,000 deaths. Today in the fight, we are watching the “UK variant” (variant B.1.1.7) closely as it is detected across Europe. While overall it is not noted to increase the death rate, it does appear to be able to spread more easily than the original strain and does appear to impact younger patients more seriously than the original strain by making younger people sicker. This reiterates the importance of good prevention measures:

mask wear, handwashing, and physical distancing. RheinlandPfalz has also enacted an ordinance that travelers coming from areas designated by the Robert Koch Institute as “Virus Variant Areas” must quarantine for 14 days with no test-out possibility. On the vaccine front, the most notable change is that the Food and Drug Administration has approved the Emergency Use Authorization for the Johnson and Johnson product, known as Janssen. This is a single vaccine (vs two-shot) regimen. The other characteristic is that this vaccine does not require the significant cold chain storage that is required by the Pfizer and Moderna products. Unfortunately, the DOD has only been allocated a small portion of the initial Janssen production. Due to the characteristics of this vaccine, I expect the initial allocations will be sent to loca-

tions without the cold chain storage capabilities to support the other vaccines. Here at Ramstein, we will continue administering the Moderna product. We are still in Tier 1B. Note that there is a new modification to the DOD schema. The levels are now called Tiers, not Phases in the new schema. Even though we are still in Tier 1B, we are capturing some essential personnel and high-risk patients (Tier 1C). See more information here: https://www.ramstein.af.mil/ COVID-19-Vaccine-Information/ I encourage everyone to ensure their DEERS information is updated. The DEERS data is the contact information the Ramstein clinic will use to contact you to assess your eligibility for the vaccine. Due to the limited number of vaccines available, certain high-risk patients are being contacted by automated system. If your DEERS information is not updated, we do not have the right information to

Airlifter of the Week: Airman boosts morale

Story and photos by Senior Airman Milton Hamilton 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs

The 86th Airlift Wing recognized Airman 1st Class Mariia Shevchenko, as Airlifter of the Week, for her leadership and technical acumen, Feb. 25. Shevchenko, 86th Maintenance Squadron precision measurement equipment laboratory apprentice, a Dallas native, has excelled in her shop and plays a key role in boosting the morale of her fellow Airmen. “Shevchenko is one of the newest trainees in our career field,” said Chief Master Sgt. Michael Babbitt, 86th MXS test measurement and diagnostic equipment flight chief. “She’s met and exceeded all expectations in her upgrade training and has the knack to do what is somewhat of a complex career field, which speaks to her math and technical skills. She’ll do well in the career field.” “I joined the U.S. Air Force to help further my education,” Shevchenko said. “I’m originally from Ukraine, and initially wanted to join right after high school, but I had to wait until I became an U.S. citizen.” During her short time as a calibration technician for PMEL, Shevchenko has expertly serviced 45 test equipment assets in support of six wings across three commands, supporting civil engineering operations, enabling aircraft pre-flight inspections and maintenance.

Hope Skibitsky, during an Airlifter of the Week ceremony at Ramstein Air Base, Feb. 25. The 86th AW recognized Shevchenko as Airlifter of the Week for her leadership, wingmanship and technical acumen.

“Shevchenko is what you expect from a top tier Airman,” Babbitt said. “For a brand new Airman to step in with less than a year under her belt and have her comfort level, speaks to her character. She’s bought into the U.S. Air Force, and actively looks for ways to enhance our shop.”

Josh Olson, 86th Airlift Wing commander, left, coins Airman 1st Class Mariia Shevchenko, 86th Maintenance Squadron precision measurement equipment laboratory apprentice, during an Airlifter of the Week ceremony at Ramstein Air Base, Feb. 25. The Airlifter of the Week program recognizes Ramstein Airmen who, through hard work and dedication, make the 86th AW the World’s Best Wing.

Shevchenko's goal is to help build a sense of community within her unit, which highlights her selfless commitment to making a positive impact on Airmen, the mission and the community. “She’s committed to getting involved off base, she also runs our booster club, snack bar

and morale fund,” Babbitt said. “Usually without any prompting, she puts together potlucks and other morale boosting events for our shop. You need somebody in your work center who serves as sort of a social director to keep the morale up, she’s more than perfect for that role.”

Shevchenko has gained respect from both her peers and her command for her work ethic, attention to detail and her wingmanship. “I want to thank my husband Gabriel, my supervisors and the shop’s leadership for making me feel at home and giving me the opportunity to lead,” Shevchenko said.

Chaplain accounted for from Korean War

Skeehan via The Wichita Eagle

The Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency announced today that Army Chaplain (Capt.) Emil J. Kapaun, of Pilsen, Kansas, who died as a prisoner of war during the Korean War, was accounted for March 2. After serving in World War II, Kapaun returned to active duty in the U.S. Army and served in the Korean War with the 8th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division. On November 2, 1950, his unit was near Unsan when they came under heavy fire from Chinese forces and received orders to withdraw. Approximately a quarter of the unit’s soldiers made their way back to friendly lines. The others, including many wounded soldiers, became trapped. Kapaun volunteered to stay with the wounded, and was soon captured and taken to a Chinese-run prison camp on the Yalu River’s south bank known as Camp 5.

Even after he became gravely ill, Kapaun continued to serve as a spiritual leader for his fellow prisoners, encouraging them to faithfully await their release and regularly defying his captors to bolster the collective morale of the POWs. Due to prolonged malnutrition, he died on May 23, 1951, after which the other POWs buried him in one of the camp’s cemeteries. As part of the 1953 Korean Armistice Agreement, Kapaun’s remains were among the 1,868 who were returned to U.S. custody, but they were not able to be identified. At a White House ceremony on April 11, 2013, President Barack Obama posthumously awarded Kapaun the Medal of Honor for extraordinary heroism and selflessness. Kapaun’s remains had rested among the 867 remains buried as “Unknowns” at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific in Hawaii. His remains were disinterred and identified as part of DPAA’s Korean War Disinterment Project, a seven-phase plan begun

in 2018, to disinter all remaining Korean War Unknowns from the NMCP. In 1993, Pope John Paul II declared Kapaun a Servant of God, the first stage toward possible canonization, which is the culmination of the Roman Catholic Church’s recognition of a deceased person as a saint. Veterinary behaviorist provides unique service to welfare of Military Working Dogs

Maj. Desireé Broach, right, the director of Veterinary Medical Center Europe, exams a Military Working Dog.

by Michelle Thum Public Health Command Europe Each March, during Women’s History Month, the U.S. Army celebrates the important contributions of women to our nation. Women serve in every career field in the Army and are critical members of the Army team. Maj. Desireé Broach is currently filling a unique role in the military. Broach is the director of Veterinary Medical Center Europe on Pulaski Barracks in Kaiserslautern, but also the only board-certified veterinary behaviorist in the Army. Broach’s journey to her current

position began as a teenager when she participated in a work release program with her high school. “The first day at the vet it just kind of clicked and I knew that’s what I wanted to continue to do,” she said. Broach eventually applied to the University of Georgia with the help of the Health Professionals Scholarship Program, a three-year full-tuition scholarship offered by the Army for veterinary students attending an American Veterinary Medical Association accredited school. “My dad is retired Navy and my brother was Reserve Officers' Training Corps and then joined the National Guard,” explained

Broach. “Joining the military was a family legacy. Plus if they could do it, I knew I could.” About 18% of the total Army is currently women. At her initial duty station at Moody Air Force Base, Georgia, Broach had over 30 military working dogs under her care. She found the majority of concerns or issues that she was treating were related to behavior. “I found that really interesting,” said Broach. Broach then applied for a behavioral residency through the military. “It was the first time it was being offered and I was fortunate to receive it,” she said. “That’s where I specialized in studying animal behavior.” In order to assess the underlying problem in an animal, she has to know species-specific behavior. “Obviously we have a little bit of a different patient load then on the human side,” said Broach. “We can't get a verbal recollection from the animal of what's going on but behavioral health is very similar to human behavioral health.” VMCEs mission is to provide comprehensive veterinary care to Military Working Dogs. Similar to the care Landstuhl Regional Medical Center provides to injured service members, VMCE is a Role 3 hospital for Military

Working Dogs that are evacuated from a combat theater or distant duty site. “Whether it's fear, anxiety, or phobia, we do historically have a caseload of dogs that have exhibited symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder in our working dog population,” said Broach. Broach has seen a reduction in the number of cases that have come through VMCE but PTSD in MWDs is still a concern and “just kind of depends on the individual dog, the circumstances, and the level of care they receive.” Veterinary behaviorists are scarce in the military. Since 2017, when Broach became the first active-duty behaviorist in the Army, one other resident has been trained and a third will begin training this fall. She hopes that the Army continues to see value for training specialists in veterinary behavioral health. MWDs are essential to the military and fill several mission critical roles. Therefore, it is important to provide them the best care as possible. “It’s an important and equally unique opportunity for the military to now be able to offer Veterinary Corps Officers and MWD Handlers training in animal behavior and welfare,” said Broach. According to Broach, veterinary behaviorists are present at

less than half of the U.S. veterinary colleges and MWD Handler training does not include canine behavior topics. The treatment that the animals receive is very specific to their needs. Treatment can be in the form of supportive care to provide them with coping mechanisms, medication, enrichment or social engagement with their handlers. “Trauma can be tied to being in a combat zone or they could’ve been involved in an actual blast,” explains Broach. “Depending on the animal's perception of what that trauma caused, the treatment will be different.” Behavioral health is not only available at VMCE to MWDs, but also to privately owned animals. “We seek to provide the best service to the community that we can within the constraints of meeting our mission requirement of providing full care to MWDs,” says Broach. VMCE provides veterinary medical care to the regionally aligned MWDs, eligible pets in the Kaiserslautern Military Community on a space-available basis, as well as referral cases from across Europe, Africa and the Middle East. USAG RP Soldier named IMCOM-E’s Best Warrior Story and photo by Lisette Kin U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz After months of training, studying, and a lot of prayer, Pfc. Samuil Matveev, religious affairs specialist with U.S. Army Garrison RheinlandPfalz, was named the 2021 Installation Management Command Directorate-Europe’s Best Warrior in the ‘Soldier’ category during a ceremony in Ansbach, March 3. “I feel very relieved now that it’s over,” said Matveev. “Since landing in Germany I’ve looked forward to competing to represent my company, and all religious affairs specialists out there. It was a bit of a challenge to go up against the other Soldiers, but I feel good now that I’ve set, or exceeded, the standard.” Soldiers and non-commissioned officers from the seven garrisons in Europe completed a 10.6-mile foot march, a rifle qualification, land navigation and other hands-on warrior tasks, a written essay, and board interviews with sergeants major from across Europe. The four-day competition took place Feb. 28 through March 3 at U.S. Army Garrison Ansbach, and is meant to recognize Soldiers who demonstrate commitment to the Army values, embody the warrior ethos, and represent the force of the future. “This is an outstanding accomplishment and I am very proud of the work Pfc. Matveev has done,” said USAG RP Commander Col. Vance Klosinski. “Being named the Best Warrior is a true representation of the attitude, work ethic and passion we strive for as a garrison team, and as Soldiers.” According to the IMCOM-E Best Warrior project officer Master Sgt. Roosevelt Moore, the competition is also meant to improve morale, espirit de corps, promote a spirit of competitiveness throughout the organization, and recognize Soldiers who have outstanding bearing and military knowledge. Matveev, born in Eastern Europe, but now a Sacramento, Calif., native, said his motivation and drive stem from the gratitude Missing something in your life?

he feels to be able to serve the country that welcomed his family with open arms. “I’m constantly thankful — regardless of the situation that I’m in,” said Matveev. “When it was tough, I reminded myself of the pride that I felt at my naturalization ceremony, and the pride that I’ll feel to represent and be an example for people in the Army and beyond.” Matveev adds that he could not have gotten through the competition without the support and encouragement of his family and his leaders. He is thankful that he

could count on his leaders to push him to exceed all expectations. “We are proud of both of our garrison representatives for their commitment to the competition and their preparation,” said Capt. Sebastian Armentrout, company commander of Headquarters, Headquarters Company, USAG RP. “Everyone from the command team to their individual supervisors was committed to helping and supporting them. I think that helped motivate them.” Also representing USAG RP in the competition was Sgt. Ivan Soria, military policeman with the garrison, Advertisement

As the first female Air Chief in NATO, she provided a truly unique perspective and was positive that we would see more women leading Allied Armed Forces in the future. She said, “Diversity matters. It is vital for our competitive edge. We must be able to recruit and retain the best minds to succeed in the future.”

Women and men joined the allday Zoom Conference from Turkey, Italy, Norway, Spain, Germany and the UK, eager to deepen their understanding of gender perspectives. The open dialogue during the Conference enabled all participants to pose challenging questions to the speakers, including asking how to accelerate more women reaching the highest levels of Command. During the morning, presentations by Air Vice Marshal Clare

Not your grandpa’s chow hall: FSS Airmen wow judges during cook-off

Dining and fitness facility Airmen from the 786th Force Support Squadron pose for a photo with their coaches, judges and leadership after completing a cook-off competition at Kapaun Air Station, March 4. The Airmen currently assigned to fitness facilities eked past the dining facility Airmen to win the 2021 Culinary Competition.

Enlisted aides receive extensive culinary training in preparation for assisting senior leaders with planning, preparing and catering events

When people think of fine dining, military food generally isn’t what comes to mind. The judges of the 786th Force Support Squadron’s cook-off are rethinking old stereotypes. Two teams made up of six and seven 786th FSS Airmen competed against each other on March 4, in a three-course winner-takes-all cook-off. The competition was a collaboration between the United States Air Forces in Europe - Air Forces Africa and 3rd Air Force enlisted aide teams along with the 786th FSS team. Enlisted aides are responsible for assisting senior leaders with an array of tasks including planning, preparing and catering events.

“As enlisted aides, we have tiered training, so we go to Advanced Culinarian School at Fort Lee which is the Army’s version of a legit culinary boot camp,” said Tech. Sgt. Curtis Stackpole, USAFE-AFAFRICA deputy commander enlisted aide. “Then we go to the Culinary Institute of America in Poughkeepsie, New York, and become professional chefs.” The culinary training made enlisted aides perfect coaches for the event. While one team was made of FSS Airmen who usually work at the dining facility, the other team was made of Airmen who work at the fitness center. “My team has six members, two of them have a bit of food service background. The other four have only worked the fitness side,” said Staff Sgt. Samantha Perez, USAFEAFAFRICA commander enlisted

aide and fitness team coach. “All their cooking knowledge they originally brought was only what they learned in tech school and from past experience.” Each team was coached by an enlisted aide, who took the time to meet with their respective team for approximately six weeks prior to the competition. The teams met twice a week for several hours to hone their culinary skills. During the competition, each team’s enlisted aide coach could not do any cooking or even tastetest the food: they were only able to make suggestions to their team based on smell and sight. Teams had five hours to create a three-course meal. “Their first course had to involve shrimp, the second course had to be beef tenderloin and the third needed a berry component of some sorts,” said Perez. After time was up, their courses were judged by Maj. Gen. Randall Reed, 3rd Air Force com-

mander, Chief Master Sgt. Brion Blais, USAFE-AFAFRICA command chief, and Stackpole. All judges were amazed by the professionalism and phenomenal quality of the food. Stackpole told all those attending that he is a huge fan of crème brûlée and the one with berries for the competition was one of the greatest he’s ever had. Even though the judges loved the food from both teams, there could be only one winner. The underdog fitness Airmen eked past the dining facility Airmen to win this year’s Culinary Competition. “Before this competition I wasn’t comfortable with cooking, but after the training I’m way more confident,” said Airman 1st Class Jacqueline Cancino, 786th FSS fitness technician. “We’ve been working hard for the past six weeks and today we showed off how great of a team we are.”

Keep your distance from these fuzzy caterpillars by Michelle Thum Regional Health Command Europe Warmer weather in Europe can lend itself to adventures with your family, but it also means the return of some pesky critters. The oak processionary moth caterpillars are a tree defoliating pest that pose health risks to humans and pets in their larval stages. While touching an oak processionary moth caterpillar is most likely not life threatening, it can be extremely painful. Public Health Command Europe offers the following tips for protecting yourself against these fluffy little creatures. The oak processionary moth caterpillar is easy to identify because of the long black stripe down the back of its yellowish white body covered in gray hairs. “The caterpillar's hairs contain thaumetopoein, a toxin that may cause itchy, painful rashes if the hairs come in contact with your skin or can exacerbate asthma if inhaled,” according to PHCE entomologist Capt. Megan Heineman. As their name suggests, oak processionary moth caterpillars are found mostly in oak trees

during early summer months from May to July. Additionally, they typically follow one another head-to-tail in "processions" on the ground and on trees from their nests to their feeding places. When a person comes in contact with the caterpillar's hairs it can irritate the lungs, eyes and skin and can even cause a severe allergic reaction. If the hairs come in contact with a person's eyes they may develop conjunctivitis. Additionally, the caterpillar's hairs can affect pets, in particular their noses and snouts due to their sniffing behavior. The best defense against these caterpillars is to avoid them. Don't touch them. Living and dead caterpillars are equally harmful. PHCE recommends avoiding oak trees and dense forests; be vigilant during outdoor activities; change clothes after outdoor activities; and leash your dogs when close to oak trees to prevent them from getting in contact with the caterpillars. It is recommended to report any nest findings of oak processional moth caterpillars to the garrison. If off-post, report it to the local authorities, and keep your distance from the location.

“It is also important to ensure children can recognize oak processionary moth caterpillars and their nests and know to stay away from them,” said Heineman. According to Heineman, the symptoms should clear up on their

own. However, if symptoms persist, call your local military treatment facility for an appointment. People react differently and some reactions may be severe. If you experience difficulty breathing or chest pain, do not wait for

an appointment with your primary care manager. Seek immediate medical attention. Check Public Health Command Europe’s Facebook page for more health information.

Operation Octave Quartz: 435 AGOW prove capabilities

U.S. Air Force Airmen assigned to the 435th Air Expeditionary Wing board a U.S Air Force C-130J Super Hercules aircraft during Operation Octave Quartz, January. The 435th Air Ground Operations Group integrated Airmen from the 435th Contingency Response Group, 435th Air and Space Communications Group and a small team from the 621st Contingency Response Wing in support of Operation Octave Quartz.

Story and photos by Senior Airman Milton Hamilton 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Several units from the 435th Air Ground Operations Wing recently rapidly deployed to Somalia at the direction of the President of the United States and the acting Secretary of Defense to

reposition assets and personnel to other locations within East Africa in support of Operation Octave Quartz. During the operation, U.S. Air Force Airmen from the 435th AGOW conducted over 300 airlift sorties to reposition 3,364 tons of equipment and 1,279 personnel quickly.

“I am extremely proud of both wings for how quickly and safely they accomplished an incredibly challenging mission with professionalism and tenacity,” said Col. Daniel C. Clayton, 435th Air Ground Operations Wing and 435th Air Expeditionary Wing commander. “Once again, our amazing Airmen across Africa

The objective of OOQ was to reposition U.S. Department of Defense forces in Somalia to other East African operating locations while enabling joint and coalition partners to maintain pressure on violent extremist organizations.

and Europe proved their readiness and resiliency, by rapidly responding and effectively executing their mission in the austere conditions and contested environment of East Africa.” In total, Joint Task Force Quartz and supporting units flew more than 1,000 sorties using 17 different types of aircraft, moved 4.6 million pounds of cargo, and repositioned hundreds of personnel throughout East Africa in less than two months. “We continue to support our partners in their fight against violent extremists like al-Qaeda affiliate as-Shabaab and ISISSomalia who aim to destabilize the region, attack civilians, and target the U.S.,” said Maj. Gen. Dagvin Anderson, Joint Task Force - Quartz commander. “We conducted five strikes against al-Shabaab, even while repositioning forces, showing that we remain committed to keeping pressure on al-Shabaab and supporting our partners who do the same.” Approximately 75 Airmen from the 435th AGOW assigned to the 435th Contingency Response Group, 435th Air and Space

Communications Group, and 4th Air Support Operations Ground provided support to the mission. “The objective of OOQ was to reposition U.S. Department of Defense forces in Somalia to other East African operating locations while enabling joint and coalition partners to maintain pressure on violent extremist organizations,” said Lt Col Sean McCurdy, 435th CRG commander. The 435th CRG provides scalable, cross-functional, and rapidly deployable forces designed to assess and open airbases in order to perform initial airfield operations, enabling rapid stand-up of combat operations anywhere in their area of responsibility. “The 435th AGOW deployed a team of multifunctional contingency response and communications Airmen to enable the rapid repositioning,” McCurdy said. “Specifically, the primary role of the team at each location was to integrate with the base command teams, increase the capacity to support airlift operations, and lead the expedited processing, upload and download of cargo and passengers on C-130J Super Hercules aircraft.”

March 12, 2021 As the only U.S. Air Force contingency response unit in U.S. Air Forces in Europe – Air Forces Africa, the Airmen assigned to the 435th AEW and 435th AGOW provide airlift flexibility to the U.S. military’s posture in the continued fight against violent extremism. “This operation allowed the CRG to show our agility,” said McCurdy. “Our contingency response teams contain highly trained multifunctional Airmen, which allows us to maintain capability while reducing our footprint. This made us lighter and leaner, and provided the flexibility to rapidly respond to the point of need throughout the area of responsibility.” The 1st Combat Communications Squadron, which is a part of the 435th ACOMG, supported the 435th CRG by maintaining constant communication capabilities. “We provided the 435th CRG with small communications packages which were easily maneuverable in the light and lean tactical environment,” said Capt Kayla Haven, 1st CBCS assistant director of operations. “1st CBCS personnel also assisted the 435th CRG with packing and loading aircraft with equipment.” Haven served as the communication liaison officer and director of staff for the Joint Air Component Coordination Element, during OOQ. The JACCE coordinated air operations and maintained communications and awareness between the Ramstein Combined Air Operations Center and the Joint Task Force commander. “The JACCE acted as a Forward Air Operations Center,” said Haven. “Essentially, all airspace movements, including aircraft going into theater to pick up the equipment and personnel, were coordinated through the JACCE.” In addition to 435th CRG and 435th ACOMG support, the 2nd Air Support Operations Squadron, which is a part of the 4th ASOG, provided capabilities to the ground commander through employment of Tactical Air Control Parties. "Airmen from the 2nd ASOS deployed to the 435th Air Expeditionary Wing to provide TACP expertise and Joint Terminal Attack Controllers in support of the U.S. Army’s 173rd Infantry Brigade Combat Team,” said Maj. Seth G. Ostlund 2nd ASOS director of operations. “We rapidly deployed our Airmen to serve as part of the Quick Reaction Force in order to bolster the overall land-based security package for the operation.”

U.S. Air Force Airmen assigned to the 435th Air Expeditionary Wing push cargo off a U.S Air Force C-130J Super Hercules aircraft during Operation Octave Quartz, January. During OOQ, hundreds of assets were moved quickly and efficiently, highlighting the capabilities and importance of the 435th Air Ground Operations Group.

This complex logistics and security operation was accomplished while maintaining significant pressure against al-Shabaab. U.S. forces will continue to support partner forces in Somalia and throughout the region while also surveilling and striking violent extremists. “Any large-scale movement of forces or equipment presents an operational vulnerability,” Ostlund said. “Our unit's contribution was toward reducing that vulnerability by posturing as additional security.” 435th AEW and 435th AGOW Airmen are poised to support at any time with mission-ready contingency forces. “This mission showcases the proficiency of the contingency response forces and the capabilities they bring to the joint force, despite their smaller size,” said McCurdy. “More importantly, it serves as a powerful model for larger organizations as they seek to develop Agile Combat Employment concepts going into the future.” The joint task force safely and expeditiously moved all U.S. personnel and equipment to their destination ahead of schedule. “The speed in which this operation was developed and successfully implemented demonstrates the ability of USAFE to rapidly plan, coordinate, and reposition forces from one geographic command to another, and then back again,” said Ostlund.

Army COVID-19 prevention focus of Baumholder visit by local host-nation leaders Story and photos by Jason Tudor U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz Showcasing measures being taken to prevent the spread of COVID and protect the American population, the U.S. Army welcomed local leaders to U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz and the Baumholder Military Community March 3. Birkenfeld County Commissioner Matthias Schneider and Baumholder District Mayor Bernd Alsfasser were among six guests who toured Baumholder facilities and spoke to Army subject-matter experts and public health officials. Garrison Commander Col. Vance J. Klosinski, U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz commander, led the tour and discussion. Officials spoke with leaders from the garrison COVID forensics-contact team, Team Trace, and toured portions of the 16th Special Troops Battalion, part of the 16th Sustainment Brigade. Leaders were also able to gain insight on how a Department of Defense Education Activity facility prevents the spread of COVID by touring Baumholder Middle and High School. “It is important to show our community partners the measures we are taking to fight COVID are in line with what the host-nation is doing outside the

fence,” Klosinski said. “Having the county commissioner and the district mayor have boots on the ground helps them understand that we are in this fight together and that we are in concert with our German neighbors in this effort.” “My trust in our American neighbors has been confirmed,” said Schneider, thanking garrison leadership for the open and informative dialogue. Joining the commissioner and the mayor were HansJuergen Bruenesholz, Director Youth, Schools, Social Affairs, and Health Authority; Diana Thiel, Birkenfeld County Health Department Director; Carolin Smith, Assistant Health Department; Karsten Schultheis, County Public Affairs Representative; and Dr. Robert Weien, Public Health Emergency Officer, U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz. For Thiel, getting to know people and the system on the U.S. side was important. “We already know some people through the phone calls we make every day, but now we know exactly who we are working with as partners,” Thiel said. All participants wore masks and maintained physical distancing during the two-hour visit to Baumholder.

Virtual Explorer:

5 incredible sites in Italy

Page 25

by MilitaryInGermany.com If you find yourself staring south in a longing fashion, you’re not alone. Italy lies that way, beyond the Alps, where you’ll find warmth, culture, beauty and amazing food. And the Alps themselves aren’t so bad, either.

Even though you may not be able to make Italy a reality just yet, you can get there virtually. Here are five great destinations (and a sweet bonus) that will plunge you into the heart of Italy and whet your appetite for the real thing.

Uffizi Gallery, Florence Housed in a brilliant building that stretches back to the 16th century and the Medicis, the Uffizi Gallery is one of the top art museums in the world. It features an impressive collection of work by one-name luminaries such as Michelangelo, da Vinci, Raphael, Botticelli, and Caravaggio. A virtual visit of this place is pretty awesome, too: you can find in-depth information about artists and their works. Plus, you can get as close to the paintings as your screen will allow! Take the virtual tour: https://artsandculture. google.com/partner/uffizi-gallery

Visit the Dolomites On any given day, you can find breathtaking views in the Alps. The Dolomites, located in northern Italy, are on a whole different level. There, the earth looks like nothing else, anywhere. Spires point like bony fingers toward blue sky. Immense rock fields stretch below chalky rust-streaked vertical cliffs. Green meadows shimmer on distant hillsides across massive valleys. Take it all in from the comfort of your own home. Venice city tour Getting lost in Venice is one of the most fun things that any human being can do. The old city offers a wondrous — and seemingly endless — series of maze-like streets that seem to bring surprises with every turn. There are churches, grand plazas and, of course, famous canals. Touring it virtually doesn’t bring quite the same thrill as onsite exploration. But it can give you a really good taste of the beauty of Venice. Pompeii When Mount Vesuvius erupted in the year 79, it meant the end for Pompeii. For explorers two millennia later, however, that volcanic eruption was a beautiful thing. It preserved an immense amount of Roman culture, architecture and art. This virtual tour gives a very thorough experience to visitors. You’ll be able to see almost everything you want to see in one of Italy’s most famous places. Take the virtual tour: https://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=d4flx14q5OE

Vatican Museum, Rome The Vatican Museum is an absolute treasure trove. Paintings and sculpture abound, and the museum itself is a work of art. Even better: the museum offers an excellent set of virtual tours. In each one, you’ll see a number of halls and exhibits in exquisite detail. And when you toggle up to look at the ceilings, you’ll feel more than just a little like Michelangelo in the Sistine Chapel.

Bonus: Gelato! No trip to Italy is complete without consuming copious amounts of gelato. You’ll love this video on how traditional gelato is made in the town of Ruvo di Puglia, using a recipe that’s nearly 200 years old. A little knowledge about what you’re enjoying will make it all the sweeter!
