Airman returns to Ramstein after 54 years Story and photos by 1st Lt. Clay Lancaster 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs

It doesn’t happen often, and it won’t happen for some. But occasionally, Airmen get the opportunity to meet an original 1947-era Airman — those trailblazers who laid the first bricks of airpower on the long blue line. Retired Chief Master Sgt. Kenneth Andrews, who served at Ramstein from 1959 to 1962, started his 30-year Air Force career in 1947. He recently took advantage of the opportunity to come back to Europe to visit family and a familiar sight — the air traffic control tower. “What an eye opener this has been to see what’s happened in the last 50 years,” Andrews said. “If someone were to blindfold me and set me down here, I would not recognize this place as Ramstein. It’s changed that much.” In his 30 years of being an See RETURNS, Page 2

ST. AVOLD, France — On a day where many are often relaxing, shopping or enjoying barbecues, more than 1,500 people gathered at Lorraine American Cemetery and Memorial to observe a Memorial Day ceremony May 29 in St. Avold, France. Traditionally observed the last Monday in May, Memorial Day is a day to commemorate men and women who died while serving in the U.S. military.

“It is certainly heartening to see such a large audience here,” said Brig. Gen. Jon T. Thomas, 86th Airlift Wing commander. “Today I have the honor and privilege to pay tribute on one of our most sacred observances.” American and French citizens attended the ceremony at the largest American World War II cemetery in Europe. There are more than 10,000 American service members buried at the cemetery, including four Medal of Honor recipients, 11 women and 30 sets of brothers. “This place is a place of peace,” said Retired Gen. Richard Wolsztynski. “I very humbly try to

forward the legacy of these sacrifices to the younger generations.” The ceremony included special readings, wreath presentations, retiring of the colors and a flyover by a C-130J Super Hercules to recognize those buried at the cemetery. “Our obligation on this day and every day is to remember our fellow Americans and the cause to which they gave their lives,” Thomas said. At the closing of the ceremony, attendees stood as Taps played and salutes rendered, followed by a moment of silence. For photos, see Page 6.

Bad leaders make good examples

COMMENTARY

by Tech. Sgt. Robert Webb 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs

Walking into my first office as a one-striper Airman, not knowing what to expect was an exciting experience that came with a multitude of questions: what are my co-workers going to be like, what am I going to be doing, what will my supervisor be like? I was lucky enough to have a great group of peers and a few mentors. However, my supervisor seemed to just not care. He would give me a task and walk away, leaving me to flounder and figure it out on my own. He would tell me not to do something only to turn around and do that exact thing himself. This was a noncommissioned officer who used his rank to get what he wanted without thinking about what his Airmen needed. As an Airman, you learn fast that your supervisor is the person who has the most control over your career, with the exception of yourself. They dictate what you do, how you do it, when it is due, what you need to learn and, most importantly, how you will be rated. If you have a supervisor who does not care and does not lead then you have to learn on your own what the Air Force expects of

Airman and air traffic controller, Andrews had the opportunity to serve in several combat roles, including Vietnam. His stories were told as if they happened yesterday. The details were that clear to him. “Vietnam was a different situation. We would have maybe 50 airplanes taxiing out for departure and coming in at one time,” Andrews said. “As one aircraft was taking off the other was taxiing right behind it. “Every morning it looked like the whole airport was headed out to the runway,” Andrews continued. “I would go into meetings and tell them we were violating every rule in the book. … It was the only way to make the operation

work and have that many airplanes out there.” Andrews and his grandson, Lt. Col. Michael Andrews, were shown the tower and introduced to other controllers by Airman 1st Class Paige Goulette. Goulette was testing for her air traffic control 5-level upgrade training that day. She stuck close to the side of the retired chief, hanging on to every word of every story he told during his visit. “When we were briefed (Andrews) worked here from ’59 to ’62, we were all so excited up here in the tower. I think it’s extremely humbling to listen to someone talk about the area you work and the way things were more than 50 years ago,” Goulette said. “I think the moment he told us he was here when the Berlin

you. When you come into work and watch your supervisor act hypocritically, it can be frustrating, but it doesn’t have to be debilitating. Within my first week, my supervisor told me what I was not allowed to do, and that I needed to talk to the other Airmen to learn my daily operations. One of the first rules he laid out was the government computers were not to be used for personal use, but every time I saw him on his computer, he was scrolling through a Yankees webpage or looking into travel sites to New York. He would snap at anyone who was caught not working while at their computer. Sadly, that was the closest to a performance feedback I got from him for the 18 months that he was my supervisor. I didn’t realize how bad my supervisor was until I moved to my next assignment and finally received my first feedback. To be a supervisor in the Air Force, you must graduate Airman Leadership School, where you learn what it means to be a leader in the Air Force. In ALS, Airmen and NCOs learn how to be an NCO and leader. According to Air Force Instruction 36-2618, an NCO is expected to provide feedback, understand and mentor junior enlisted mem-

The stories he shared with Goulette and others showed just how far avionics and other advances in the air traffic controlling realm have come. “After hearing the equipment he worked with, it really made us take a step back,” Goulette said. “I don’t ever think we can understand how hard this job was when he worked as a controller, but we can try to imagine. And we all have the utmost respect for him and all that he’s done.” As Andrews departed the

bers, lead by example, take an active leadership role with their Airmen by staying involved and epitomize excellence. It is one thing to learn in ALS what to do as a supervisor and to be taught the AFIs, but it is another to practice what you have been taught everyday as a supervisor and leader of Airmen. Because I have had a number of supervisors who were bad leaders and failed to do what they were supposed to, I have learned to make it a priority to make sure I never repeat their mistakes. Reflecting on previous supervisors, I am now more motivated than ever to lead by example and make sure that I am giving my Airmen constructive feedback that helps guide and show them what they need to do to be successful in their careers and the Air Force. You can grow as a supervisor by learning from and emulating the good mentors and leaders that have come before you. More importantly, you should learn from and avoid the mistakes of supervisors who made you shake your head, so when your new Airman shows up to their first duty station, they can answer the question “what will my supervisor be like?” with a positive response.

786th FSS lodging recognized for supporting Turkey dependents

The 786th Force Support Squadron receives the First Sergeants Team Award for their efforts in supporting the evacuees from Incirlik Air Base, Turkey, May 25 on Ramstein. The 786th FSS accommodated military dependents from Incirlik until they returned to the United States or were moved to temporary housing to finish the remainder of the school year.

Story and photo by Airman 1st Class Joshua Magbanua 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs The KMC First Sergeant Council recognized the 786th Force Support Squadron lodging team for their superior performance May 25 on Ramstein. The team received the First Sergeant’s Team Award for the support they provided to military families who evacuated Incirlik Air Base, Turkey, due to increased security risks. “We want to congratulate the 786th FSS lodging team for winning this quarter’s team award,” said Senior Master Sgt. Donald Pedro, KMC First Sergeant Council president. “I really appreciate what they did for us.” Upon short notice, the team lodged approximately 700 family members, offered 24-hour support at

two bases in the KMC and helped provide household goods and food service. “It has been a rollercoaster since this event took off and we started receiving people,” said Master Sgt. Steve Williams, 435th Construction and Training Squadron first sergeant, “The FSS and the lodging team put their heads together and made room for these families coming in. You guys did amazing work, and it happened over a very short period of time.” Williams, who served as the first sergeant for the evacuees, said most of the family members who came to Ramstein from Incirlik moved on to return to the U.S. The remaining families stayed in Ramstein to finish out the school year. “Approximately 250 families stayed here to finish school,” Williams said. “Once the school year ends, they will be making their

It’s important for us to do our part while we’re here.” Colon said this event is the epitome of ensuring facility excellence. “We represent the Air Force in this country, so we want to represent it in the right way by ensuring we’re taking care of the areas (we occupy),” Colon said. 435th AGOW deploys to Africa, builds new base by 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Only a few hours before sunset, a plane loaded with Airmen and cargo lands on a runway. Within hours they are staring at an open field, miles away from the initial runway. Their task is to make the field a base. Teams from the 435th Air Ground Operations Wing used two bare bases in Africa and improved them into bases capable of supporting thousands of personnel and as many missions in less than a month. “As I caught the first C-17 (Globemaster III) chockfilled with our (Contingency Response Group) Airmen and a team of 86th Security Forces Squadron defenders, I knew the mission was going to be a success, not because of the extensive planning or preparation or the support from back home but the way they epitomized the Airman’s Creed and a must-do attitude as they rolled off the aircraft exuding a warrior’s spirit,” said Lt. Col. Jason Herring, 435th Contingency Response Squadron commander. The harsh environment combined with the isolation from approved food, water

and fuel sources along with the need to provide their own security in an uncertain environment were just a few of the challenges they faced. “I can’t say enough about the Airmen that deployed alongside me, their resilience, determination and their ability to innovate when faced with complex problems,” Herring said. “The success of this mission resides solely on the backs of those Airmen who wrestled through 116 degree temperatures, sandstorms, a lack of showers, bathrooms and laundry facilities for nine days, never com-

plained and provided me with the honor of leading them. Being the squadron commander is the highlight of my career. I am extremely proud of the CRG warriors and the tireless efforts they put forward to spread airpower to the Central Africa region.” All Airmen were required to be armed and wear helmets and flack vests in the summer sun. Yet even with the challenges they faced, several Airmen said they would do it again. “When we got here, things did not line up like we had planned, but I would do

this mission even with the eight days of baby wipes and bags,” said Master Sgt. Bryan Oyes, 435th Contingency Response Squadron expeditionary engineering NCO in charge. “This was the most austere I have done.” Oyes was in charge of planning out the tent locations. He and the team took the challenges on, and it did not matter the career field, from maintainers to medics everyone grabbed hammers to build their shelters, work center and bathrooms. “This is what we do; this is what the CRG does. And the

entire team pulled together at every level,” said Tech. Sgt. Jeffery McReynolds, 435th CRS aircraft maintenance lead. The teams came from a variety of AGOW units, including the 435th Contingency Response Group, 435th Security Forces Squadron, 435th Contingency Response Support Squadron and 435th CRS. They opened up the bases as part of the wing’s mission of providing expeditionary airfields on demand. The Airmen of the 435th CRG come from all types of career fields and experiences to build bases, but once they establish essential facilities and operations, more specialized teams from around the Air Force come in to relieve them and continue the construction. Having the ability to respond to such situations on short notice demonstrates U.S. Air Forces in Europe and Air Forces Africa’s “Forward, Ready, Now” capability. After improving the bases and turning them into a functioning bases, the AGOW returned home to Ramstein ready to be called upon to open other bases throughout Europe and Africa.

International academy graduates inaugural class by Staff Sgt. Jill Marie Diem U.S. Air Forces in Europe and Air Forces Africa Public Affairs The first graduating class of the Inter-European Air Forces Academy in Einsiedlerhof, Germany, had the U.S. Air Forces in Europe and Air Forces Africa commander’s undivided attention when he spoke with students May 10. “Change is inevitable,” Gen. Frank Gorenc stated several times. “You have to have the basics to maneuver through the change. When you don’t know what the future will bring, focus on the basics.” Representing air forces from Bulgaria, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Greece, Hungary, Latvia, Montenegro, Poland, Romania, Slovakia and Slovenia, 31 students from 11 militaries are having a one-month crash course in U.S. Air Force leadership basics, hearing it straight from the top. The basics Gorenc referred to are mission, lead-

ership, safety, loyalty and discipline. All things considered crucial to a successful Air Force career, according to the 37-year veteran, and also a focus of IEAFA. “I was incredibly impressed that a four-star general took the time out of his busy schedule to prepare this presentation for us, just a small group,” said Capt. Jason Thanasakopoulos, Hellenic air force C-130 pilot. “It was a unique experience for us. All of the things happening here are unique for us — the facilities we have, how our instructors treat us and the supplies they give us. This school is amazing.” The school was started to reassure nations that the U.S. Air Force is here to help raise their capabilities to build interoperability through education, leadership, team building and joint discussion. Multinational officers and enlisted members learn together to provide a greater understanding on an individual level that will build partnerships, enhance cooperation and help our air forces oper-

ate more effectively together. Combining forces day to day in this way is one of the many inherent strengths of NATO. “I think the students are enjoying it,” said Capt. Karl Stadnicki, IEAFA instructor. “It’s really opening their eyes to the United States and the rest of Europe. They’ve really gotten a broader perspective. “I’m an immigrant just like General Gorenc,” Stadnicki continued. “It’s important to me on that level to reassure European partners and to make sure that Europe is stable to move forward and prosper. Right now, we are moving toward a time of conflict and strife in Europe, with both the migrant crisis and a resurgent Russia. Now is a good time to focus on developing those common skills. It’s going to take countries cooperating together to solve those problems.” The inaugural class graduates May 27. The next course, with a new group of NATO airmen from an even broader national range, begins June 20.

peaceful cemetery, we bear witness to the incredible sacrifice, heroism and volunteerism of American service men and women who left their homes and families to travel across a broad ocean to a faraway land to fight side by side with our Allies,” Huston said. “In General Pershing’s own words, ‘Time will not dim the glory of their deeds.’” The ceremony also included speeches by the Thiaucourt Mayor, the Nancy Prefect, a performance of

“The Air Service over the Salient” by the Ferdinand Buisson CollegeThiaucourt, Taps by the United States Air Forces in Europe Band and a U.S. Air Force honor platoon formation. During Memorial Day, we remember and honor the sacrifice of the men and women who fought for freedom. We remember the soldiers and free citizens who fought to protect their families, their homes and their ways of life from those who wished to seize it from them.

BAUMHOLDER, Germany — Gen. Daniel B. Allyn, the 35th U.S. Army vice chief of staff, visited Smith Barracks May 27 for a ground’s-eye view of 16th Sustainment Brigade activities, as the Knight’s Brigade provides essential logistical support to Anakonda 16. The vice chief received a command brief from Col. Michelle M.T. Letcher, the 16th Sust. Bde. commander, and other key brigade leaders and staff officers during the visit. Letcher provided an overview of brigade activities and forces across Europe. “We provided the Army vice chief of staff an overview of how 16th Sustainment Brigade sustains a Strong Europe, and that included Atlantic Resolve,” Letcher said. “We also showcased our intricate involvement in U.S. Army Europe’s upcoming Anakonda 16 exercise.” The brigade staff shared information on the unit’s capabilities. “He received a briefing on our responsibilities as the only sustainment brigade covering an entire continent,” said Lt. Col. David Thompson, 16th Sust. Bde. support operations officer. “We briefed him about the brigade delivering strategic depth through theater opening, distribution and sustainment for Atlantic Resolve.” Allyn recognized the hard work of the Knight’s Brigade. “Gen. by Sgt. Maj. Michael Pintagro 21st Theater Sustainment Command Public Affairs Key 21st Theater Sustainment Command leaders and competition officials unveiled Team 21’s 2016 Best Warriors before an enthusiastic audience of officers, sergeants, Soldiers, family members and visitors during a dynamic culminating ceremony held May 24 at the Wagon Wheel Theater on Smith Barracks. Army 2nd Lt. Justin Ganzer, executive officer of the 16th Sustainment Brigade’s 106th Financial Management Support Unit, claimed top honors among command junior officers. Sgt. Vanessa Carrillo, a heavy vehicle driver with the Knight’s Brigade’s 515th Transportation Company, 39th Transportation Battalion, bested four other sergeants to capture the noncommissioned officer crown. Spc. Gerardo Gonzalez, a military policeman with the 709th Military Police Battalion, 18th Military Police Brigade, triumphed in the Soldier category, outpacing three rivals. Fifteen candidates from headquarters and subordinate organizations across the command competed in the intense, annual 21st TSC Best Warrior Competition. Participants based in Grafenwoehr and Sembach as well as Kaiserslautern and Baumholder put their Soldier skills, stamina, conditioning and wits, not to mention their

nerves and endurance, to the toughest of tests. Candidates from the 16th Sust. Bde., competing on their home turf due to a late change in venue, performed superbly, capturing a second-place as well as two first-place titles. NATO Brigade candidates competed concurrently but not directly against TSC rivals. Sgt. 1st Class Dominador Rubang and Staff Sgt. Ricky Holder both move on to the regional competition. The TSC’s top troops square off against superior Soldiers across the region during the European Best Warrior Competition, scheduled for Aug. 7 through 11 in Grafenwoehr. Stellar Soldiers from U.S. Army Europe and Army Africa headquarters, the 173rd Airborne Brigade, 2nd Cavalry Regiment, 12th Combat Aviation Brigade, 10th Army Air and Missile Defense Command, 5th Signal Command, Joint Multinational Training Command, Europe Regional Medical Command, Installation Management Command-Europe and NATO Brigade will compete for continental bragging rights and an opportunity to challenge the Army’s ultimate warriors in early fall. “This competition was tough — way tougher than brigadelevel,” Gonzalez said. “It was condensed, but that actually made it tougher. Military Postal Service stopping for some US direct-hire NATO employees Courtesy of Installation Management Command Europe Public Affairs WIESBADEN, Germany — U.S. direct-hire employees of NATO will no longer be able to use the Military Postal Service in Europe starting July 18. In a memorandum from the Office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense signed April 13, the secretary of defense’s general counsel issued a ruling to extend a 2004 exception to policy that authorized MPS privileges to U.S. direct-hire employees of NATO. According to the general counsel, “There is no statutory authority that authorizes the Department

of Defense to provide and fund military mail services for direct-hire NATO personnel.” Some U.S. direct-hire employees of NATO may, however, still be eligible for MPS, primarily those who are U.S. military retirees. Eligibility will be determined on a case-by-case basis when customers impacted by this decision discuss their status with personnel from their servicing installation post office. U.S. citizens working directly for NATO are not considered U.S. government employees; can be hired from any location, including from within the continental United States; and need not be living in Europe before being hired. They are paid in euros and receive NATO’s package of overseas benefits

and entitlements based on the organization’s eligibility determination. This package does not include an entitlement to receive personal mail through MPS. U.S. direct-hire employees of NATO impacted by this decision are located primarily in the U.S. Army Garrison Benelux area. These individuals are encouraged to stop by their post office pickup or finance window to request guidance on changing their mailing addresses or to provide documentation showing they are U.S. military retirees and entitled to continued use of MPS. Individuals impacted by this decision may also contact their installation postmaster for more information.

USAREUR competition will be as intense. I look forward to the challenge. “The ruck march was the toughest event,” Gonzalez added. “The distance and the hills really put a strain on your legs and feet. But I told myself, ‘I can’t quit and I won’t quit. I have to finish the whole thing.’” Ganzer, a mild-mannered finance officer and graduate of the U.S. Military Academy, acknowledged his achievement falls outside the realm of activities conventionally associated with his day job. “I relied pretty heavily on my experience at West Point,” Ganzer said after the competition. “In finance, you don’t always have an opportunity to spend a lot of time on tactical tasks, but this opens the door to everyone outside the normal range of specialties. A lot of people asked me about the competition. We didn’t have anyone from finance try this in the past, but we may have more in the future. “I feel like I’ve learned a lot during this competition,” Ganzer added. “And I definitely have more work to do in preparation for the USAREUR competition, but I’m setting the goal of winning. You don’t want to settle for anything less.” Candidates endured a relentless onslaught of events rendered all the more intense by its condensed schedule. Sunday bore little resemblance to a church picnic, or even a conventional administrative report day. Contestants completed an Army physical fitness test in full field gear, reported to a military board, wrote essays

and completed a written examination in addition to administrative tasks associated with the onset of the competition. The second and most brutal day started in the middle of the night, with candidates dressed, packed and on the road before 3:30 in the morning. After performing emergency first aid on a simulated casualty under duress, candidates transitioned from saving lives to taking them, assembling and firing small arms under a variety of challenging conditions. Candidates moved under simulated attack, reacted to fire, sent reports, threw grenades, operated radios, cleared a building and exploited the site during a challenging situational training exercise. Weary competitors enjoyed little respite after the exercise, calling in a fire mission, confronting a hard-hitting battle-

field correspondent and falling promptly under chemical attack. A culminating 12-mile foot march beginning in predawn darkness and combatives tournament punctuated the final day of the competition. Raucous applause greeted the announcement of the winners during an awards ceremony held on the base’s main auditorium after three days of frenetic activity. Brig. Gen. Arlan DeBlieck, the TSC deputy commanding general, and Command Sgt. Maj. Stanley Richards, the TSC senior enlisted leader, presided over the ceremony and presented awards. The general praised the NCO corps, which supplied the largest number of candidates, as well as the fighting spirit of the competitors. “I’m very proud to stand before 15 people without

an ounce of quit in them,” DeBlieck said. “You showed up to compete knowing what you were facing and knowing the challenges in front of you.” Dedication and tenacity, DeBlieck noted, are what’s in the competitors’ DNA, and it’s what makes them special. DeBlieck also urged candidates to embrace the competition as a professional development opportunity, for peers and Soldiers as well as themselves. “All of you are winners because all of you can take the experience and the lessons learned and offer a hand up to others who can benefit from your example and your guidance,” DeBlieck added. “That’s what the Profession of Arms is all about.” “This competition exemplifies everything the Army and Team 21 are about,” Richards said. “These candidates gave

everything they had, mentally, physically and emotionally. We deliberately challenged them, and they met every obstacle head on, even when they were tired, hungry, sore and cold. You couldn’t watch them without feeling pride in the team we’ve built and the young leaders we’ve developed. “This is the embodiment of the warrior ethos,” Richards continued. “These candidates have day jobs too. They’re medics, cooks, mechanics, intel analysts, admin and supply specialists, and here they are accomplishing field missions under the most challenging circumstances to the highest standard. This tells you everything you need to know about the quality of our Soldiers and readiness within this command.” Little rest awaits the weary. The competition concluded just ahead of Anakonda 16, a major regional exercise involving large swathes of TSC headquarters and subordinate organizations as well as allied forces across Europe and the world. Winners resume training for the European Best Warrior Competition in early summer. Most will spend around a month in preparation for the challenging regional competition in northern Bavaria. “They’ll certainly have their work cut out for them in ’Graf,’” Richards said. “They’re going up against some of the finest Soldiers across a continent, including paratroopers from a premier airborne infantry brigade. It definitely won’t be easy, but after what I’ve seen over the last three days, nothing these guys accomplish will surprise me. They’re capable of anything. The sky’s the limit.”

Kaltenberg Medieval Tournament coming soon Story and photo by Amanda Daly Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation I had such high hopes leading up to the Kaltenberg Medieval Tournament and was worried that reality might fall short of my expectations. However, Kaltenberg provided me with the most real medieval experience I have ever had. I am ecstatic to report that my expectations were blown out of the water. I had been to small-scale, local medieval festivals in America, but they were not a fraction as impressive as Kaltenberg was. Seeing as it is the largest medieval festival in the world, I was not surprised to see a crowd waiting outside the grand entrance half an hour before the event started. I was pleased to see how many people dressed up for the festival. A good portion of the crowd wore traditional medieval costumes, which definitely added to the experience. While I did not have any medieval pieces in tow, there were plenty of items for purchase at the festival. Aside from medieval dress, booths displayed jewelry, pottery, leather accessories and candles, among many other goods. Even the vendors dressed the part. As a resident foodie, I was extremely impressed by the array of options. I could not decide between a freshly baked donut, candied almonds or pork, so I got it all. The pork was pulled straight off the roasted pig, and prepared right before my eyes. Everything down to the plates and utensils were very medieval, as they were made out of carved wood. There was, of course, an endless supply of beer and wine, as well. Festival goers were given the option to purchase a refillable stein to last all day. A beer garden sat in the middle of the festival and provided seating to eat and drink.

A couple hours in, the grand parade was set to start. Elaborately dressed men, women and children paraded through the main street as their medieval counterparts. Fire breathers, musicians, fairy nymphs and jesters made appearances in the parade as well. The festival’s main event was an unforgettable jousting show. Included in the price of the ticket through Army Outdoor Recreation is an excellent seat in the impressive jousting arena. The two-hour show was not restricted to jousting and also included a commentated element similar to a play. The jousting tournament was such a unique experience, and a definite highlight of my day. Following the tournament, we had just a couple hours left at the festival. A high-energy band drew a large crowd at the main stage. The remainder of the night was spent dancing to the sounds of the Medieval band. The Kaltenberg Medieval Tournament was one of the most unique trips I have ever been on with Army Outdoor Recreation. There was a perfect balance between free time and scheduled events. Between the various booths, limitless beer and wine, delicious food, elaborate costumes and arena show, my festival experience was one for the books. I felt as though I had taken a genuine step back in time at the Kaltenberg Medieval Tournament. Army Outdoor Recreation will visit the Kaltenberg Medieval Tournament July 30. Tickets cost $129 for adults, $99 for children 6 to 12 years old, and $69 for children under 6 sharing a seat with a paying adult in the arena. The deadline to reserve a seat is June 24. For more information or to book this once-in-a-lifetime trip, contact Army Outdoor Recreation on Pulaski Barracks, Bldg. 2905, at 493-4117 or 0631-3406-4117 or visit www. kaiserslautern.armymwr.com.

RMS take field trip to airfield Alyssa Maxon, Ramstein Middle School sixth-grade student, is shown how to hold a hawk by Gerhard Wagner, 86th Operations Support Squadron falconer, during a field trip with Johnette Scott’s science class May 3 at an airfield on Ramstein. Wagner’s birds are one facet to keeping the airfield safe from unwanted birds and animals that could potentially damage an aircraft.
