I left for Air Force Basic Military Training on May 11, 2015. I left behind most of my immediate family, the love of my life, Joseph, and our two dogs. The six-hour drive to the Military Entrance Processing Station was filled with every emotion ranging from anxious to excitement. An overnight stay at a hotel and a few flights later, I landed in San Antonio, Texas. I got off that plane not knowing what to expect for the next eight weeks. I had close to a full pack of cigarettes in my pocket and chain smoked those until the bus pulled up. I threw the remainder away and got a taste of what was to come when a Military Training Instructor stepped off the bus. The days that followed are still a blur and I can hardly recall what happened. I remember receiving a few pieces of military clothing and meeting the MTIs who were assigned to our flight. There was a lot of yelling and learning of basic military etiquette. The “dorms” as they called them felt more like guarded concrete structures. Now, I went there knowing I didn’t want to give off any indication of being gay for the sole reason that everyone in my flight

Then, as well as being able to share our sports and our food; it’s a nice opportunity to have some fun on the weekend and socialize in a new culture.” Grassroots is a new program initiated by the 86th

was male. During my time there I made many close friends, some I still speak with today. I thought I was doing extremely well with keeping it a secret until letters upon letters from Joseph showed up every day. The MTI handed out letters that had been written to us in the dayroom in front of the entire flight. I didn’t really think anything suspicious of it until someone approached me asking who Joseph was. I was taken back at first because I hadn’t mentioned his name at all during this time; so I played it off and said he was a good friend of mine. Eventually Joseph sent me an album’s worth of photographs of our dogs, family, and him. I knew right away this was going to be a little harder to explain. Luckily they weren’t inappropriate in any way. That was when my MTI learned that I was gay. He didn’t ask any questions about it so I assumed it was probably more of a closed door conversation that his leadership was having. I can’t remember the day but a few of my flight members approached me as we were doing laundry. The barrage of questions on why I had pictures of this guy and who exactly he was that followed were draining so I stuck with the “good friends” story because that was the first thing

I thought of. I later thought that if I said he was family, it would have been a more believable story. BMT ended eight weeks later. Joseph, my sister, and mother were present. It was an extremely emotional experience running with my flight, and I was excited to be done with training. A few of the close friends I made, learned about who Joseph truly was and they had no problems with it. I think ultimately I wanted to say I hid Joseph out of respect of the others in the flight but, partly it was because I was scared since not many people knew about us. I left for technical school basically a week after BMT. I was hoping for an extended flight or even the longest bus ride you could imagine. What I got was a fifteen minute ride to Ft. Sam Houston. Now technical school was a lot more relaxed and until then I didn’t have any idea what my career field was. I came in open general because my recruiter told me it was a better idea, he lied. I can’t be too upset because I still got a medical job and that’s what I wanted. I studied and worked out a lot and was relieved to be able to talk to Joseph, my family, and friends every day. As we were getting closer to graduation, I found out that a girl that was in my class had also got the same assignment, Ramstein, Germany. My first thought was, “I have to get rid of this.” I tried to get a new assignment and it would have worked, however

June 30, 2017 Joseph and I talked about it and said “let’s do it!” The Status of Forces Agreement between Germany and the United States allowing same sex couples to be stationed here was extremely new. I spoke with a woman at the assignments office and was told that I’d be able to bring my husband. I was so excited! She later came back to me and said that I’d have to finish my entire tour without him. We went back and forth on this subject for a few days before I finally got notified that he was coming at a later time. I would just to have amend my orders when I got here. I can’t begin to explain the terror I felt those days, it was hands down the worst three days of my life. We all agreed on them taking him off my orders and just amending my orders when he had received a SOFA passport. If they would have told me months before or even weeks that this was mandatory for him to have a SOFA Passport to come to Germany with me; I would have relayed the message telling him to get it. They never told me anything about this passport until a week before I was supposed to leave. In the end, everything worked out like it should have and we’ve been happily together ever since. A few odd looks when I go to pick up his medication or make an appointment for him. I will gladly take getting funny looks over him not being here.

Kingdom, and the U.S. This year’s key training objective was to exercise with NATO’s enhanced Forward Presence Battlegroups as part of a multinational division, while conducting an integrated, synchronized, deterrence-oriented field training exercise designed to improve the interoperability and readiness of participating nations’ armed forces. “Less than one year ago, our Alliance said we were going to transition from assurance to deterrence,” said Lt. Gen. Ben Hodges, U.S. Army Europe Commanding General. “One of the manifestations of that transition was the creation of the eFP Battlegroups. In less than one year, these battlegroups are exercising already

That is an amazing accomplishment for our great Alliance. “Deterrence means you have to have the capability to compel or defeat a potential adversary,” he continued. “You have to demonstrate that capability and the will to use it, and these exercises are that demonstration.” Key training events of the exercise included a convoy by Battlegroup Poland from Orysz, Poland, to southern Lithuania; a maritime prepositioned offload of pre-staged supplied and equipment in Latvia; a Marine amphibious assault in Latvia; two combined arms live-fire exercises, one each in Poland and Lithuania; an air assault by the British Royal Marines at the

Leonids Kalnins, Latvian army chief of defense. “If you would like to be safe as a state, you have to find Allies; but if you would like to be the winner and create a great future for all countries, for all society, you have to participate in such exercises as this one.” The Saber Strike program facilitates cooperation between the U.S., allied, and partner nations to improve joint operational capability in a variety of missions and prepare participating nations and units for future operations while enhancing the NATO Alliance. During the exercise, U.S.

Page 3 and NATO distinguished visitors attended a demonstration of the joint and combined capabilities of the U.S. and NATO at Adazi Military Base, Latvia. One of the visitors was Nancy Bikoff Pettit, U.S. ambassador to Latvia, who spoke about the importance of the exercise. “I think exercises like this send a very strong message,” Bikoff Pettit said. “It’s not only the U.S. who is interested in security and defense here in the Baltic region, it’s all of our NATO allies working together. “This exercise demonstrates what happens when many NATO allies come together to cooperate and demonstrate the interoperability that we have,” she continued. “We are really pleased with

the quality of the exercises.” Saber Strike 17 promotes regional stability and security, while strengthening partner capabilities and fostering trust. The combined training opportunities that it provided greatly improve interoperability among participating NATO Allies and key regional partners. “The U.S. is here,” Hodges said. “We’re going to continue to participate in exercises; American soldiers love serving with Latvian soldiers. This is a great place to train and we’re excited about doing that for as [long] as I can see.” As the seventh iteration of this exercise, Saber Strike 17 continues to provide a venue for U.S. and NATO military members to train and learn from one another to form a stronger partnership.

CAP cadets tackle week of challenges Story and photos by Senior Airman Elizabeth Baker 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs In the heat of a German summer afternoon, 28 young people make their way through the forest. They are mostly too young to be Airmen, yet they wear similar uniforms as they carry fellow members on stretchers, over walls and under barbed wire, following the orders of their cadre. The Civil Air Patrol cadet encampment is a summer program for youth, ages 12 to 21, who are part of the CAP Cadet Program and who chose to better themselves by practicing leadership, increasing knowledge and building physical fitness in a military setting. Instead of sleeping in and enjoying a lazy week of summer, these cadets spent more than a week living in deployment tents on Ramstein, carrying out physical and mental tasks in a manner somewhat similar to Air Force Basic Training. “It’s taught me how to listen, how to follow directions, how to help others, and how to do everything to the best of my ability,” said CAP cadet 2nd Lt. Zane Fockler, European Encampment cadre and B Flight commander. The cadets begin every day with stretches, formation and breakfast before diving in to a variety of classes and activities. The classes focused on leadership, life skills and aerospace knowledge, while daily sports, drill and ceremony practice provided challenges of strength and discipline. The cadets faced the many challenges that come with figuring out how to communicate and operate as a team. Cadets who have been through

the encampment at least once, like Fockler, have the opportunity to become cadre and take on more leadership responsibility. As B Flight commander, Fockler was expected to organize his flight at a moment’s notice and march them safely. On the obstacle course, he made sure his team stayed hydrated and talked them through the various challenges as they made their way carefully through the woodlands. “It’s a challenge being in charge of eight-plus people, especially when you have someone jumping down your throat when things go wrong,” Fockler said. “A really important part of the encampment is learning how to take orders and criticism.” Fockler said that the humbling experience of the cadet encampment has helped him become a better person. “It’s hard to own your failures,” Fockler said. “The most important thing cadets take away from this experience is learning how to grow from our mistakes and better ourselves as a people.” For those moments when the cadre may fail, the cadets had a number of experienced volunteer CAP personnel overseeing and guiding them. Fockler explained that the challenges of the encampment can make cadets want to quit. Yet, with the help of their senior leaders, if the cadets drum up the courage to stick it out, they have the opportunity to gain life skills through perseverance and humility. CAP Maj. Walter Brown, Royal Air Force Mildenhall Cadet Squadron deputy commander, helped lead his seventh encampment this year. According to Brown, the purpose of the cadet encampment is to transform American youth into leaders and to build up the level of knowledge of aerospace throughout the U.S. population. Brown said by the end of the week the cadets have always improved in a number of areas including discipline, knowledge, physical fitness and attitude. He said any one of the adult leaders who has been in the program for a little while can share many stories of positive transformations they’ve witnessed in the cadets. “When I was in Albuquerque, New Mexico, I was helping to get a CAP cadet squadron started at a middle school,” Brown said. “There was a kid at the school named Sam who was in the principal’s office every week. A few months after we got the program started, the principal pulled me aside and said ‘I don’t know what you guys are doing, but I haven’t had Sam in

my office in two months. He’s become one of the examples for good behavior in his class.’” Later, when Brown questioned Sam about his transformation, Sam explained that he had become involved in the CAP program and that it was benefiting him. “What keeps me coming back is

a deeply held belief that I’m making a difference in someone’s future,” Brown said. “If I make a difference in only one of these cadet’s future, whether they become an aerospace professional or join the military or not, even if it just makes them a better person somehow, that’s the most important thing.”

Ramstein Area Dental Lab provides smiles for Airmen, Soldiers Story and photos by Senior Airman Tryphena Mayhugh 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Many Airmen and Soldiers are used to working alongside one another in a variety of career fields. Pilots, security forces, maintainers, and others often have the opportunity to build a partnership with sister services through exercises and deployments. The 86th Dental Squadron Area Dental Lab has also found a way to increase partnership by providing services, such as crowns and dentures, for Army patients throughout Europe. “Recently we’ve had the capability to reach out to them and offer our services to where we can receive their cases and take care of them,” said Lt. Col. Geoffrey Gessel, 86 DS ADL director. “Their only other option is to have their cases sent all the way back to the U.S.” The 86 DS ADL technicians also hosted a training day for Army personnel who do not have access to all the equipment the Ramstein lab has to offer. “It ended up being really great because we were able to meet some of their lab technicians and see what

capabilities they had versus what we use,” said Charles Edward Davis II, 86 DS ADL flight chief. For the Army, the only area dental lab is in the U.S., which services both stateside and overseas Soldiers and their families. A large workload for the stateside lab equals slower turnaround times which is added to the time it takes to ship molds and appliances to the U.S. and back. A typical turnaround time for the Army lab in the U.S. is 45 days, while the Ramstein ADL can typically complete a project in 20 days. Leaders in the 86 DS ADL reached out to the Army at Pulaski Barracks, who spread the word to Army bases throughout the European Command. They were told all they have to do is ask, and the Ramstein ADL will offer a helping hand as long as it does not impact the workload they already have for Airmen and their dependents. So far, only bases in the Rheinland-Pfalz area have used the Ramstein lab for their patients. “It’s just open communication to see what they need, what we can offer them, and in the time they are requesting it,” Davis said. “So far we haven’t had any issues; I think we’ve been able

to meet all their needs over the past few months as we’ve been getting more and more cases from them.” The area dental lab at Ramstein has the capability to make dentures, removable partial dentures, crowns, bridges, retainers, suck-downs, sports guards, hard night guards, sleep apnea devices, custom ear pieces, and more. All these products are available to Army patients if their own lab doesn’t have the capability or manning to complete the job. The lab technicians can provide many of these services for a single tooth all the way up to a full mouth reconstruction. Chris York, 86 DS ADL dental lab technician, recently completed a set of 25 caps for a Soldier when the Army dental lab didn’t have the manning to complete the project themselves. “It’s very important [to have this partnership with the Army],” Davis said. “Anything we can do to support a sister service in general, but if we can help get people to deploy faster than 45 days, that’s going to benefit the Air Force, Army, Navy, Department of Defense, the U.S. in general.”

A mold of teeth is displayed on a desk as Chris York, 86th Dental Squadron dental lab technician, works on a set of caps for a U.S. Army Soldier at the 86 DS Area Dental Lab June 21 on Ramstein.

“One person not being able to deploy, whether it’s Army or Air Force, that’s one extra member that has to take their spot,” he continued. “If it’s just because of a dental emergency or a dental issue and we can support that, that’s why we’re here, that’s why we have a job.” Davis finds satisfaction in his job where he provides a service that makes a difference for people. “I love my job,” he said. “I’ve been doing this for 13 years, and the greatest thing is replacing someone’s tooth and giving them the ability to smile or function. To see someone who has had to replace all of their teeth for one thing or another and now they have a full set of dentures and they smile again, it’s a huge change in people’s attitudes and life.” Partnership is important for the success of the DOD mission as a whole. Working together in any capacity helps build and strengthen partnerships and the 86 DS ADL Airmen are furthering their relationship with Soldiers throughout Europe one smile at a time.

Ramstein hosts AIRCOM track and field championship by Staff Sgt. Timothy Moore 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Usually when NATO nations come together, it’s to work together toward a common goal, but that wasn’t the case when six nations came together on Ramstein, June 20-21. This time they were competing against each other as they worked toward a similar goal — victory in the NATO Allied Air Command InterNation Athletics Championship. More than 100 athletes representing the air forces from the United States, Germany, the United Kingdom, Poland, Belgium, and the Netherlands took part in the two-day competition on Ramstein and Volgeweh Military Complex. The biennial event is a tradition of spirited competition established by the Second Allied Tactical Air Force more than 30 years ago. It provides an opportunity for NATO nations to demonstrate their commitment to sports and teamwork, while reinforcing respect and goodwill. “(This is) a great opportunity for athletes of NATO nations to stand side by side competing in these types of sports programs the way we stand side by side in battle,” said Steven Lowe, 786th Force Support Squadron supervisory fitness and sports specialist and one of the organizers of the event. Athletes competed against each

other in events including the shot put, discus throw, javelin throw, long jump, high jump, 100-, 200-, and 400meter dashes, 3K and 5K runs, and 4-by-100 and 4-by-400-meter relays. “(My favorite part was) the camaraderie and the vast knowledge overload you get from all these great athletes coming together,” said Staff Sgt. Daniel Austin, 86th Aerospace Medicine Squadron bioenvironmental engineering technician and sprinter. “Even though this is a competition, this is a great team-building experience for the air forces. We are on the front lines building trust with our allies in a non-work environment.” Though the event had many personal wins, including an International Association of Athletics Federation World Championship-qualifying high jump of 2.3 meters by German athlete Mateusz Przybylko, it was team USA that took home the overall win. “This is a great stepping stone for athletes of all levels to set their sights on the next level, whether it be Worlds, (Conseil International du Sport Militaire), or another high-level event back at home station,” Lowe said. “This is the beginning of the track and field season.” Results from the championship are in the table below. by Anonymous My name is Stephanie. I was born and I enlisted into the Air Force as Jonathan from St. Louis, Missouri. My father was in the Air Force as well, and it just made sense for me to leave home the same way. My first year in the military was filled with what I would say every child leaving home deals with; learning who they are and learning to accept the different parts of who they are. That’s when I came out as transgender male-tofemale, and at first, it was a very difficult few months. I first only came out to certain friends, and of course family, and all the change left me in a difficult place until I was introduced to the military’s lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender community, OutServe-SLDN, Germany. Through this group I made many friends, and was accepted into their family almost

immediately. After a few months of this, I had the confidence to live as who I was until I began pursuing treatment. My family doesn’t discuss the fact I am transgender. They know I am pursuing treatment but that is the last we have talked about. Luckily my close friends already knew, they were just waiting for me to open up to them. These friendships have grown closer and continue to do so as they get to know the person that was always there, Stephanie. I was surprised to see how much support and respect I was being given from everyone at first. Of course, there are people who don’t understand, but I have rarely been treated with any disrespect for who I am, and the paths I have chosen. The leadership I have is 100 percent supportive, and the resources that are available to me to pursue my transition have been

much more available than I originally thought they would. While it has been a hard year, and it hasn’t been easy, I am very grateful for

everything the military has put into place for me and am looking forward to seeing where this journey will take me next.

Ramstein recognizes LGBT Pride Story and photos by Staff Sgt. Nesha Humes 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs

“The struggles, sacrifices, and successes among the LGBT community continue to shape our history and remind us to uphold tolerance and justice for all. Integrity and respect are fundamental qualities of our military and civilian culture. As we celebrate the diversity of the total force, we honor all who have answered the call to serve, and their unwavering commitment to our shared mission. During

the month of June, let us celebrate the diversity of the DoD workforce and rededicate ourselves to equity, dignity, and respect for all.” – A.M. Kurta, performing the duties of the Undersecretary of Defense for Personnel and Readiness, 2017 DoD LGBT Pride Month Memo. For the last five years, the Department of Defense observes Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Pride Month in June each year. We asked 13 Kaiserslautern Military Community Members “Why is celebrating LGBT Pride important to you?”

“Pride is the celebration of our life and the freedom to embrace who we are. It is the celebration for those who have fought for our rights and on behalf of those who are not here to celebrate their meaningful life with us, whose lives were taken too soon from hate, and ignorance; from despair. It is the celebration of our beautiful son, born from two women in love and those blossoming into the person they were always meant to be.” — Warrant Officer 1 Ramona Silafau, left, 10th Army Air & Missile Defense Command G-1 Human Resources Technician with spouse, Jazmine Silafau and their son Jax

“A lot of times in life we grow up with one ideal and one way of understanding the world. That’s comfortable for us. Sometimes we have to challenge ourselves to put ourselves in someone else’s shoes. For a big part of my life, I grew accustomed to act like the few other gay people in my small Central American town, never “too gay,” never “open” and never speaking about sexuality. Homosexuality in any form was greeted with insults and many times violence, which I sadly had my fair share of. Perhaps, we could gain a different perspective on life and learn more. Instead of disregarding the gay lifestyle and the gay ideals, how about taking a step forward and put yourself in our shoes? Maybe understand what it means to be a gay person. I continue to celebrate pride, so that youth who went through what I had to, or worse, can also one day have the pleasure of feeling loved, feeling accepted and feeling free.” — Staff Sgt. Jose Echaverry, left, 86th Logistics Readiness Squadron central storage supervisor “I believe celebrating LGBT and being a part of pride is important because you’re celebrating who you are, the history and understanding the people that went before you and have fought for your rights. We’re still standing up for our rights of who we are, who we believe we are.” — Senior Airman Sean Echaverry, right, 86th Medical Squadron surgical technician

“I celebrate pride because of what it represents. Pride is a celebration of life. It is a place where everyone is accepted. No prejudice. No judgements. Just people coming together in the name of love, humanity, and equality.”— Jaukena Jackson-Albers, Team Ramstein member

“What was it like serving under don’t ask, don’t tell? I was an actress. Every day I lived a double life; I would pretend to be interested in men. After I came out to my family a weight was lifted off my shoulders. Finally, I was proud of who I am. So today, I celebrate for those that are still hiding and not allowed to be themselves. I celebrate for all those before me that fought so hard and gave everything for equality. Pride is self-respect and love. Celebrate so we may never go back in time.” - Ashley Carothers, left, 21st Theater Logistics Support Center supply technician “Being in New York, in the west village, I felt the presence of those who struggled at the Stonewall. I’ve learned to appreciate the one thing I can claim as mine, pride month, as a time to celebrate with my brothers and sisters. It’s probably the most important thing I’ve learned. It’s mine and they can’t take it away.” — Tamia Russell, right, 2nd Signal Brigade, Systems Center Configuration Manager administrator

“I celebrate Pride because when I finally came out as gay, I felt myself become complete. I am able to fully express myself in ways I would have never been able to before. However, I am more than just gay. I am goofy regular ‘ole guy and a whole bunch other things that sums me up!” — Airman 1st Class Keith Rowe, 86th Logistics Readiness Squadron traffic management journeyman

86 LRS fuels Ramstein’s mission Story and photos by Airman 1st Class Joshua Magbanua 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs

What can win wars, but is not a weapon? What can bring society to life, but also destroy it? Fuel. Communities around the world run on fuel in some shape or form, and Ramstein is no exception. The 86th Logistics Readiness Squadron’s petroleum, oils and lubricants flight is responsible for handling the installation’s military fuel supply. Master Sgt. Jeremy Aumiller, 86 LRS section chief fuels operations, said his Airmen’s mission is paramount. “Without fuel, nothing moves,” Aumiller said. “You can load up all the bombs that need to go down range, but if there’s no fuel, that jet isn’t going anywhere—those bombs are worthless. If it contains any kind of a moving engine part, the mission stops without us.” The Airmen receive, inspect, store and distribute fuel to their respective buyers. The flight manages fuel for both government-owned aircraft and ground equipment. POL is divided into four sections: the fuels information service section — which serves as the nucleus of the flight, the mobility section, the laboratory and operations. The laboratory serves as an inspection center for government-owned fuel coming into Ramstein. Tech. Sgt. Antonio Lucio Jr., noncommissioned officer in charge of the 86 LRS fuels laboratory, said inspection is a very crucial part of the POL mission. The type of fuel a unit receives can have a crucial impact on its mission, he explained. “There isn’t a single drop that comes in which isn’t sampled by us,” said Lucio, who has ten years of experience working with fuel. “The

Air Force has certain specifications for aviation fuel. When we receive the fuel, we want to ensure the entire fuel recipe meets or exceeds those specifications.” Lucio added that the consequences of not inspecting or giving an aircraft the wrong kind of fuel could be dangerous — and even deadly. “The effect on aircraft would be either it could miss take-off or it could potentially crash,” he said. “It could result in loss of life and equipment. That’s what we want to avoid.” POL does not just handle fuel in the sense of liquid to make a vehicle run. It also has a cryogenics department, which handles oxygen for pilots to breathe in high altitudes. Aumiller acknowledged that there are potential risks that come with his Airmen’s job, but they mitigate these risks by using personal protective equipment. Smoking is also prohibited within 50 feet of a fuel source, he added. Aumiller recalled a snow storm in January 2017, in which the Kaiserslautern Military Community witnessed record snowfall. Though it was the largest snowfall in a 24-hour period in the area since 2009, Aumiller and his Airmen still carried out their mission. POL Airmen must report for duty even with the presence of severe weather or other hazardous conditions even when other Airmen do not. Aumiller said their dedication shows the commitment of POL Airmen to ensure Ramstein keeps moving forward, through rain, sleet, or snow.

War debris and blood-soaked sand cover the shore. Naval vessels operating in pairs with nets between them gather bodies from the water. A grim site for Donald Coffey. The aftermath of the invasion was the first thing he saw when arriving to the beach front in Normandy, France, 73 years ago. The next thing was a half-track striking an underwater mine and exploding in front of him. The beach free of enemies, but not free of hazards. Before Donald enlisted, he delivered ice cream in Iowa City, Iowa. Then the United States implemented the draft, but Donald volunteered and soon became a half-track driver for the U.S. Army’s 24th Cavalry Reconnaissance Squadron Mechanized. “He was there when the cavalry went from having horses to transitioning into a mechanized force,” said Capt. Matthew Coffey, 37th Airlift Squadron pilot and Donald Coffey’s grandson. A week and a half after D-Day, Donald’s unit arrived in Normandy. And although the worst part of the invasion was over, the fight still continued. “He arrived onto Utah Beach and his unit was given orders to take the Cherbourg Peninsula,” said Matthew. “This was after the initial invasion, but it was when we were trying to put as many forces in that area as possible

so they could start the liberation of France.” His unit established a headquarters in Saint-Lo, where they moved artillery shells from the headquarters to the front. “An artillery shell landed near him while he was carrying a box with another soldier,” said Matthew. “The other soldier was killed and my grandfather was significantly wounded. When the medics came by, they said he was too far gone to save.” Donald then responded to the medic, “The hell I am!” and the medic returned to help him. After battlefield surgeons treated his abdominal wounds, Donald was taken to a hospital in England and eventually evacuated back to the states where he recuperated. Both of Matthew’s parents were in the Air Force, and now Matthew flies the C-130J Super Hercules at Ramstein. “There was a little bit of a legacy of military service that began with my grandfather,” said Matthew. When Matthew had the opportunity to become a C-130 pilot, he said there was one training deployment he sought to do – fly over Normandy. Matthew’s ambition came to light on May 29, when he and his colleagues flew out to Cherbourg, France, to take part in the D-Day celebration for the 73rd anniversary. “I wasn’t expecting to go out to Normandy,” he said. “Our squadron has a very high operational tempo and there’s no guarantee what training deployment opportunities you may

have. To go out to Normandy and have the opportunity to lead formations was something that I will always treasure and never forget.” Although Matthew’s grandfather has passed away, a piece of Donald was with him while flying over Normandy. “A few years ago when I graduated from pilot training, my uncle gave me a compass,” said Matthew. “That compass was the one my grandfather landed with in Normandy.” He flew over Normandy with the compass in-hand to honor his grandfather. “It meant a lot personally to be

able to celebrate my grandfather in that way,” he continued. “To have a memento to fly with that he carried in that same spot, but I think it also meant a lot to my family who don’t have the chance to go out to that location and see what I was able to see. Our grandfather still has a lot of impact on our family.” On the last day of Matthew’s time in Normandy he visited Utah Beach, the same beach his grandfather landed on all those years ago. “I can’t begin to imagine what he saw, but I still felt a connection to that place through him.”

405 AFSB leadership team hosts NATO logistics delegation

Col. Rodney H. Honeycutt, commander, 405th Army Field Support Brigade, headquartered on Daenner Kaserne in Kaiserslautern, uses a terrain model of AFSBn-Benelux to explain the layout of the Army Prepositioned Stocks-2, to a 40-member NATO logistics and resources delegation at AFSBn in Eygelshoven, Netherlands. The purpose of the visit was to discuss the Army Materiel Command’s operations, as well as the supporting role the APS-2 sites play in the U.S. Army Europe deterrence mission.

Story and photo by Ronnie Schelby 405th Army Field Support Brigade Public Affairs EygElshovEn, netherlands — On June 7, the day that the flag of Montenegro, the newest country, and 29th member of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, was hoisted for the first time at NATO headquarters, the leadership team of the 405th Army Field Support Brigade, headquartered on Daenner Kaserne in Kaiserslautern, also hosted an international partnering event. Col. Rodney H. Honeycutt, 405 AFSB commander, Command Sgt. Maj. Mark A. Morgan, 405 AFSB command sergeant major, and Maj. Matthew A. Hedenskoog, commander, AFSBn-BENELUX, 405 AFSB, hosted a 40-member NATO logistics and resources delegation at Battalion Headquarters in Eygelshoven, Netherlands. The visit included a bus

tour of the Eygelshoven Army Prepositioned Stocks-2 site, and a terrainmodel discussion regarding the Army Materiel Command’s operations, as well as the supporting role the APS-2 sites play in the U.S. Army Europe deterrence mission. “The purpose of this engagement is to allow these NATO members to physically see what our Army is doing in terms of the APS sites,” said Col. James R. Becker, logistics and resource planner, and U.S. Military Delegation lead. “This visit to AFSBnBENELUX gives us the opportunity to walk through, look at, and understand how this, and other APS-2 sites, contribute to overall, larger NATO mission,” he said. “Not only does this visit give the NATO delegation first-hand exposure to key logistics NATO sites, but it also shows, firsthand, the valuable contributions to the Alliance

made by both Belgium and the Netherlands,” added Honeycutt. The Army Prepositioned Stocks-2 program positions combat and support equipment close to the fight in order to reduce deployment timelines and enhance the Speed of Assembly. AFSBnBENELUX, which became operational Dec. 15, 2016, is the first of a number of sites that the U.S. Army is opening within the next few years. The opening of the second APS-2 site, Dulmen Army Depot, Germany, opened May 10. The third site, located in Zutendaal, Belgium, is scheduled to open this fall. Once at full operational capability, APS-2 sites will provide combat equipment, such as modernized Abrams battle tanks, Paladin artillery and Bradley fighting vehicles, available for deploying United States Army personnel to support current and future ongoing operations within the European Theater.

Hudson assumes command of largest American hospital overseas by Landstuhl Regional Medical Center Public Affairs The last time Col. Timothy Hudson stood on the parade field at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center, he was standing in formation for a change of command ceremony for incoming commander Col. David Rubenstein. Fast forward about 16 years to June 13 to find retired Maj. Gen. Rubenstein sitting in attendance at a change of command ceremony as Hudson assumed command of the largest U.S. overseas hospital from Col. James Laterza. Hudson said he was honored to follow in their footsteps. “Today I am blessed to follow in command a lineage of great leaders, the most recent Col. Jim Laterza whose initiatives, goals, efforts and passion helped create one team with one purpose … I am humbled to follow in your footsteps.” Hudson, who comes to LRMC from Evans Army Community Hospital in Fort Carson, Colo., where he served as Chief Nursing Officer, ended his speech by sharing the insight of a former U.S. Army cavalry officer about the LRMC legacy: “Landstuhl – the very name transcends the location, the city and the medical center. It is the embodiment of hope for those coming from theater that they will be repaired, that they will live. It is their first step back into the world. For their families it represents relief that their loved ones will be okay, and that they are coming home. No other medical center in the Army shoulders such a heavy responsibility to get it right. I have to get it right.”

Dog Jog

The next Family and MWR Sports & Fitness fun run is all about the dogs of our military community and the humans who love them! On Aug. 19, bring your furry family member to the Rhine Ordnance Barracks Special Event Center, Bldg. 237. Registration is open from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m., and the run will begin at 10 a.m. Dogs must be on a leash and friendly. Registration is $7 for adults, free for children and fur children. The first 100 registrants receive a free t-shirt. Prizes will be awarded for the

LRMC the largest American hospital outside the United States, the only American College of Surgeons verified Level III Trauma Center overseas and the hub for six clinics throughout Germany, Italy and Belgium. The LRMC health system serves 205,000 beneficiaries, including military service members, Department of Defense civilians, military retirees and family members. Under Laterza’s leadership since May 29, 2015, access to care increased by approximately 50 percent through innovative practices such as the opening of the Enhanced Access Clinic and expanding the Virtual Health program to provide remote care to patients throughout Europe via secure video. As a result, LRMC was recently cited by U.S. Army Medical Command for leading the command in the highest satisfaction results among outpatients. “My charge to the staff today is to continue to embrace their role as leaders and to offer the same level of loyalty and excellence to Col. Hudson as he takes on the mantle of command. Tim, I am certain they will continue to innovate and change to ensure that LRMC’s greatness is continued while you command,” said Laterza. “With great joy I leave LRMC knowing I did my best to live up to the greatness of my predecessors and my team. Healthcare is a noble profession and I want to thank all of you for the trust and privilege of serving as commander of the ‘Crown Jewel of Military Medicine.’ Kristy and I will dearly miss the LRMC team.”

Adults and children will have fun with the bark boat race where participants have the chance to win prizes. Delights of grilled game, Palatinate specialties and drinks as well as coffee and cake will be served. To keep the arrival with out a car easy, the organizers

established a costfree shut tle service (eight seats) from Frankenstein to Leinbach Valley. The shuttle service will take the guests to the Triftfest in regular intervals. In Frankenstein there will be two bus stops (at the train station and Alter Postplatz). All bus stop areas will be signposted. It is not possible to go to the Triftfest by car. For more information contact the tourist informa tion office at 06303-913-147 or email borijan.radojevic@ enkenbachalsenborn.de.
