21 TSC recognizes courage, commitment to soldiers, civilians on Army birthday

The 21st Special Troops Battalion goes on a 2.47 mile run commemorating the U.S. Army’s 247th Birthday, June 14, on Rhine Ordnance Barracks. The Army celebrates its birthday today so units across the globe celebrate by having events like this to boost morale. Photos by Pvt. Samuel Signor

by Natalie Weaver 21st Theater Sustainment Command Soldiers have aided national security in peace and war since the first Continental Army was established on June 14, 1775, thus making today the Army’s 247th Birthday. The first delegates were commanded under George Washington and said this oath in 1775, “I have, this day, voluntarily enlisted myself, as a Soldier, in the American Continental Army, for one year, unless sooner discharged: And I do bind myself to conform, in all instances, to such rules and regulations, as are, or shall be, established for the government of the said Army.” The Oath of Enlistment transformed over the years to encompass a Soldier’s duty to the Constitution and obeying orders from their Commander and Chief and other appointed officials. The current oath is used universally for all services and ranks, except for the National Guard where the state of allegiance is included. Army means family to U.S. Army Pvt. John Kerl Vitug, 21st Theater

Sustainment Command. “It was scary to do big things.” Vitug took the oath at 17 and was recruited as a finance management technician. “At the same time, I was happy. I was able to make my parents proud for joining a big organization like this.” All Soldiers stand ready to defend the nation and approximately 121,000 U.S. Soldiers are currently deployed in 140 different countries around the world. 21st TSC held a ceremony to celebrate the Soldiers, Families, and civilians that make defending America 24/7 possible at Kleber Kaserne, Kaiserslautern. In attendance was Maj. Gen. James Smith, commanding general, and Command Sgt. Maj. Kofie Primus, senior enlisted advisor. “My oath of enlistment was something bigger than myself, being able to be a part of an allvolunteer force was a chance to serve with a diverse and cohesive team but most importantly carry on the legacy, honor and sacrifice of brave men and women that contributed and paid the ultimate sacrifice to the defense of our great nation,” said Primus.

Along with the ceremony, 21st TSC is hosting a virtual walk or run event where Soldiers and civilians can register on an app to track their progress and the goal is to complete 24.7 miles in honor of the Army birthday. Those who achieve the goal are awarded a Certificate of Achievement. Master Sgt. Brian Demayo, senior military equal opportunity advisor, created the event to support Army Heritage Month and the 247th birthday. The month of June is designated as Army Heritage month to highlight achievements and contributions of Soldiers, Families, and civilians and to encourage a sense of inclusion and provide equal opportunity education. The physical event hosted 212 participants from 21st TSC locations in Germany, Kosovo, and Poland. Demayo said it was the first time 21st TSC created a virtual fitness event such as this one and it will end 19 June. Putting people first is the priority of the Army. Team 21 supports this promise by building positive command climates, reducing harmful behaviors, and changing the way recruiting and retaining talent is performed.

Honoring 70 years of American/German alliance Story and photos by Staff Sgt. Gabrielle Spalding 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Nestled on the corner of a notso-busy street in Ramstein Village is a crop of red metal containers. The bright color grabs your attention; but what’s displayed inside of the containers tells a story of decades of U.S. and German resolve, solidarity, and partnership. The Docu Center Ramstein hosted Ramstein Air Base and local leaders, their families, and patrons, to commemorate this unity during the opening of the 70 Years of Ramstein Air Base Exhibit, June 15. “Seventy years of Ramstein Air Base; a rather long time of coexistence of U.S.-Americans and Germans in the region,” said Ralf Hechler, Union Community and City of Ramstein-Miesenbach mayor and host of the exhibition. “It is the responsibility of the Docu Center to offer an objective view on the history of living together.” During the event, guest speakers shared their appreciation for the center and how this exhibit has illustrated what Ramstein AB has

Together, as allies and partners, many significant events have been accomplished, from providing logistics support to NATO, to temporarily housing 35,000 Afghan evacuees, to sending medical supplies and other equipment to Italy, Luxembourg, Lebanon, Ghana, and South Africa at the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic. “Without the hospitality, generosity and cooperation of our German hosts, the success of these and other missions over the past 70 years at Ramstein would not have been possible,” said Fischer. “On behalf of Brig. Gen. Olson, and the men and women of Team Ramstein, thank you for putting this amazing art exhibit together that honors the Americans and Germans who have worked together in the name of freedom, democracy and equality to keep this nation and our allies safe.”

stood for over the years and its role in the history of the region. “This great display does not only show how our air base grew larger and more modern, but it also speaks to the U.S. Air Force as an employer for thousands of nonU.S. and U.S. civilians,” said Renae Fischer, 86th Airlift Wing vice director. “This exhibition, showing the

development of Ramstein Air Base, was the work of many years and many hands.” Using carefully selected objects and photographs, the exhibition has commemorated seven decades of the Air Base and the impact it has had on its surrounding communities. Among the objects on display

is a C-130J Hercules “Spirit of Ramstein” logbook from 2004 and 2005. Americans and Germans continue to forge bonds together in offices, during exercises and emergencies, and connect while living alongside each other across the Kaiserslautern Military Community, said Fischer.

MPEP brings Airmen from across the globe Story and photos by Airman 1st Class Jared Lovett 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs

The Military Personnel Exchange Program held an annual forum and a change of command ceremony at Edelweiss Lodge and Resort, in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, June 12-14. The forum brought together 67 exchange officers from 13 countries at 53 different locations who have been immersed into foreign Air Forces around the world. The MPEP is a two to three-year special duty assignment that places officers into other nation’s air forces to further international relationships. The exchange officers, who have been “alone but unafraid” in a foreign land, were able to come together during the forum and reacclimate themselves into an air force environment with other members of the exchange program. The forum focused on highlighting the program’s successes and discussing the intent behind its vision. “The purpose of the program is to build strategic partnerships with our allies and partners,” said Mr. Wade Smith, MPEP director of operations. Those selected for the program can be sent to any of the allied air forces around the globe to perform their primary duties as well as learn the foreign language so that they can fully immerse themselves into the culture while seeking to create unity with U.S. allies. In most cases, the officers are the only ones in that country representing the U.S. Air Force. “Our exchange officers are quite resilient,” said Lt. Col. Kevin Thomas, MPEP incoming commander. “They’re able to navigate their way into a new culture and thrive in that environment.” The MPEP program is available to both commissioned and enlisted Airmen of the U.S. Air Force. “For every exchange personnel on the U.S Air Force side, there is a foreign military member in the United States doing something similar,” said Thomas. “It’s a onefor-one exchange most of the time.” For those interested in volunteering for this opportunity, reach out to the Military Personnel Exchange Office Europe at Ramstein Air Base. “We are always looking for people who are interested in this kind of work,” said Smith. “It is the adventure of a lifetime. I can think of no cooler assignment in the entire Air Force than being an exchange officer.”

For the Army who just finished celebrating their 247th birthday, this is a celebration and a testament to their diversity and inclusion principles, as well as an honor to every minority leader who paved the way for the new generation of leaders. “It’s an honor to be in the Army and officially celebrate Juneteenth this year,” said Maj. Gen. James Smith, commanding general, 21st Theater Sustainment Command. “As we celebrate Army Heritage month, we remember the legacy of the great African Americans who paved the way for us in the military and in the multitude of professional sectors of society.” Within American society, many

are dual-hatted serving their civilian-based corporations while also defending their country within these professional societies. Brig. Gen. Wanda Williams, commanding general, 7th Mission Support Command is no stranger to that lifestyle. Williams not only commands her organization and serves as the deputy commanding general of the 21st TSC, but she is also an accountant for the Securities and Exchange Commission. Serving as the first black female commanding general of the 7th MSC, the Juneteenth holiday is a reflection of how far the U.S. has come in its efforts to make institutions more representative of the people they serve. “As an Army Reservist within KAISERSLAUTERN

Outside the National Museum of the United States Army in Fort Belvoir, VA, there is a marker commemorating the service of American Civil War veteran Sgt. William H. Carney. Carney, who was born into the institution of slavery in southern Virginia in 1840, enlisted in the U.S. Army as a free man during the American Civil War. When the color guard of his 54th Massachusetts Infantry Regiment was killed in the Battle of Fort Wagner in Charleston, South Carolina, Carney retrieved the U.S. flag and marched forward despite being shot several times. He was the first black service member to be awarded the Medal of Honor for gallantry in battle. His likeness now welcomes visitors to the first national museum to tell the story of America’s oldest military service. Carney’s story, and thousands more, are celebrated during Army Heritage Month in June and recognized during the Juneteenth National Independence Day, which officially became the eleventh federal holiday in 2021. The histories of African Americans and the U.S. Army are significantly intertwined. Much like America’s original Independence Day, the U.S. Army played a fundamental role in securing the freedoms extended to Black Americans by the Emancipation Proclamation and the Reconstruction Amendments. The U.S. Army remembers its role in the liberation of enslaved persons throughout the Confederacy as one of its core legacies. For many Americans, Juneteenth is a “second” Independence Day celebrating the end of slavery. All three leaders from the command group, who happen to be African-American, feel honored to celebrate this federal holiday for the first time in the Army, and within the 21st TSC.

the only forward MSC in the Army, I am a constant and proud advocate for the U.S. Army Reserve, where African Americans make up one out of every five Soldiers,” said Williams. “I am proud of the legacy we continue to build upon and it is an honor to celebrate this holiday officially this year.” Entering into a unit with active duty and reserve component Soldiers comes with significant challenges. This is nothing new for Command Sgt. Maj. Kofie Primus, senior enlisted advisor, 21st TSC. Primus relinquished responsibility of the 405th Army Field Support Brigade May 26, which is composed of a predominantly DA Civilian organization. There, employees from the unit’s host nation, active duty and reserve Soldiers and our nation’s Allies are an integral part of the Army’s Prepositioned Stocks operations. Building a team built on dig-

nity, respect and understanding is the basic building blocks of any organization. Primus intends on enforcing those same values and principles as the new senior enlisted adviser of Team 21, and is emphasizing those key aspects during Army Heritage Month. “As NCO’s it is our job to take care of Soldiers and create an inclusive environment with mutual respect and team cohesion,” said Primus. “This nation and the Army is doing that, because Juneteenth honors Black Soldiers who fought and sacrificed to ensure the Constitution fulfilled its promise to all Americans.” Juneteenth is holiday for every American. This Army Heritage Month, as we celebrate all cultures and customs within our elite organization, Team 21’s leaders embody the hope and spirit of this nation’s past, and bright future of our Army.

Milley briefed the media at NATO headquarters following the meeting. “I’m especially pleased that defense leaders from some 50 countries came together here today,” Austin said. “It’s a testament to the on-the-ground impact of this contact group that it continues to grow.” Austin announced that President Joe Biden had approved a $1 billion security assistance package for Ukraine. This will include multiple launch rocket system munitions, 18 more 155 mm M777 towed howitzers and the tactical vehicles to tow them, and 36,000 rounds of 155 mm ammunition. “This package also includes $650 million in Ukraine security assistance initiative funds that will help Ukraine defend itself with two additional Harpoon Coastal Defense Systems and thousands of secure radios, night vision devices, thermal sights and other optics,” the secretary said. Allies and partners are also building Ukraine’s military capabilities. Austin said Germany will provide three multiple-launch rocket systems and guided MLRS munitions to Ukraine. “Slovakia announced a significant donation of MI-series helicopters and urgently needed rocket ammunition,” Austin said. “We also discussed important new artillery donations from many countries, including Canada, Poland and the Netherlands.” To have military capability, there needs to be a weapon system, a trained crew and munitions. The contact group is working on the training portion of this equation. “To date, we have trained 420 Ukrainians on the M777 howitzer, 300 Ukrainians on the selfpropelled M109 [howitzer], 129 on the M113 armored personnel carrier, 100 on unmanned aerial systems, and 60 most recently graduated today on the [High Mobility

Artillery Rocket System],” Milley said. The contact group works handin-glove with Ukrainian defense leaders. Today, the Ukraine Defense Minister Oleksii Reznikov attended the meeting. Milley said that since the start of the Russian invasion, the Ukrainians have asked for 10 battalions of artillery. “Twelve battalions of artillery were delivered,” he said. The contact group has also delivered 97,000 anti-tank systems. “That’s more than there are tanks in the world,” he said. “They asked for 200 tanks; they got 237 tanks,” he continued. “They asked for 100 infantry fighting vehicles; they got over 300. We’ve delivered, roughly speaking, 1,600 or so air defense systems and about 60,000 air defense rounds.” The HIMARS, or High Mobility Artillery Rocket System, will be an important addition to Ukraine’s arsenal. The U.S. military is training HIMARS crews one platoon at a time in Germany. “By the end of this month, we will transfer HIMARs systems, ammunition and trained crews for operational use in the defense of Ukraine,” Milley said. Ukraine is making incredible sacrifices in defense of their country. “In the media, you see reported that Ukraine is taking 100 killed and 100 or 200 or 300 wounded per day,” he said. “I would say those are in the ballpark of our assessments.” He was asked if Ukraine could

sustain the fight in light of such losses. “For Ukraine, this is an existential threat,” Milley said. “They’re fighting for the very life of their country. So, your ability to endure suffering — your ability to endure casualties — is directly proportional to the object to be attained. If the object to be attained is survival of the country, then you’re going to sustain it — as long as they have leadership, and they have the means by which to fight.” The Ukraine Defense Contact Group first came together in April at a meeting at Ramstein Air Base. There was a virtual meeting of the group last month. “Since the contact group first came together nearly three months ago, we built tremendous momentum for donations and delivery of military assistance,” Austin said. “And after this afternoon’s discussions, we’re not just going to maintain that momentum; we’re going to move even faster and push even harder.” The group will look to deepen cooperation and coordination to get needed capabilities to Ukraine. “We’ll bolster Ukraine’s armed forces to help them repel Russian aggression now in the future,” the secretary said. “So we’ll continue working closely and intensively together with this contact group. We’ll keep on strengthening our support for Ukraine’s self-defense and will continue to stand up for the rules-based international order that protects us all.”

Exercise Baltic Operations 2022, referred to as BALTOPS, is U.S. European Command’s premier maritime-focused annual exercise in the Baltic Region taking place from June 5-17. The exercise provides a unique training opportunity to strengthen the combined response capability critical to preserving the freedom of navigation and security in the Baltic Sea. This is the 51st iteration of the exercise series that began in 1972. U.S. Air Forces in Europe – Air Forces Africa provides aerial support in various capacities throughout the exercise, which included aerial refueling capabilities during Thursday’s mission.

U.S. Air Force KC-135 aerial refueling platforms from Royal Air Force Mildenhall’s 100th Air Refueling Wing provided tanker support to Finnish F-18 Hornets, Swedish JAS-39 Gripens, German Eurofighter Typhoons, and U.S. Navy F/A-18 Hornets. The KC-135’s unique capability to refuel both probe and drogue aircraft allows the U.S. to integrate with a variety of coalition partners. The aerial refueling function extends the range and reach of aircraft, giving them the opportunity to fly longer, faster, and further to meet mission and training objectives. Morón AB Airman provides MWR for personnel Story and photo by Staff Sgt. Robert McIlrath 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs MORÓN AIR BASE, Spain — Arriving at a new base with a new environment, mission and coworkers can be a challenging adjustment for some, but what about arriving at a new base and having to learn a whole new job from scratch on top of all that? Staff Sgt. Taylor Deany, arrived at Morón Air Base, Spain, in the fall of 2021 after moving from MacDill Air Force Base, Fla., where he was a unit deployment manager. Deany’s primary job is services, which is to maintain and operate hotels, restaurants and fitness centers at bases all over the world. But that’s not the job he was tasked to do at Morón AB. Deany became the noncommissioned officer in charge of community services for the 496th Air Base Squadron. A job he had never done during his tenure in the U.S. Air Force, but would aid in providing resiliency and morale for the base, which has a high ops tempo.

“He plans all of our major events as well as monthly events off-base like tours, trips and even bingo,” said Rodney Hooper, 496th ABS Force Support Flight director. “He handles the coordination for payment, funding, transportation and even does the after action reports as well as the publicity and marketing.” Being new to a solo position came with its fair share of obstacles. “The biggest challenge has been trying to learn about some Air Force entertainment programs that I’ve never dealt with before,” Deany said. “I’ve been in for ten years and this is my first time actually doing this job, so it was all brand new to me.” Morón AB might seem small in size, but the base is a major stopping point for many missions including the Coronet, which allows aircraft to travel nonstop across the Atlantic Air Bridge. “Not only is he required to take care of our base population,” Hooper said. “He has to surge and take care of all these other folks that show up here on

temporary duty assignments.” Deany hit the ground running and proved to be fully capable of picking up the responsibilities the new job entailed. “We’ve done several trips to wineries, co-hosted a trip to a ski resort with the chapel for a resiliency event, and tours around the area,” Deany said. “I think I’ve fit into this job pretty well because of my personality.” Hooper also remarked on how many people don’t adapt to a job like Deany’s due to lack of people skills. “It’s definitely personality driven,” Hooper said. “He’s a natural, he has the skills and people really like him.” The new job has given Deany a new perspective on force support and its impact and importance to how a base functions. “Being here I’ve gotten to see how big of a footprint force support has on the whole base. Sometimes you don’t get to see that as clearly at work centers that are stateside or at a bigger base, Deany said. “I take great pride in supporting everyone on this base.”

Staff Sgt. Taylor Deany, 496th Air Base Squadron Force Support Flight non-commissioned officer in charge of community services, tackled a challenging job that was brand new to him when he arrived at Morón Air Base, Spain, in the Fall of 2021. As the NCOIC in charge of community services, Deany was responsible for coordinating and planning events for the base population as well as people there on temporary duty. Deany was able to see the direct impact that his job has as well as the importance of force support to ensure a base stays functioning and that there are plenty of morale opportunities.

21 TSC participates in National Territorial Commanders Committee Conference

Senior logistics leaders, member nations and observer members convene at the annual National Territorial Commanders Committee Conference in Split, Croatia, from June 13-15. Photos courtesy of Croatian Armed Forces Public Affairs

by Capt. Andrew Paulin 21st Theater Sustainment Command SPLIT, Croatia — The 21st Theater Sustainment Command’s deputy commanding general and host nation section participated in the annual National Territorial Commanders Committee Conference with member nations and observer members here from June 13-15. The annual NTCC conference is a forum for senior logistics leaders and staff to improve host nation support by sharing lessons learned over the last year, and proposing new solutions to the sustainment enterprise in Europe. This year’s conference was important because of current events on the European continent, and this is the first time the conference has met in two years due to COVID 19. After the conference, 7th Mission Support Command, commanding general, and 21st Theater

Sustainment Command deputy commanding general, Brig. Gen. Wanda Williams was thrilled to network with key leaders within the logistics field. “I’m thrilled to be here and build relationships with partners in the logistics community. The support provided by host nations is incredibly important to how the 21st TSC provides RSOM [Receptions, Staging, and Onward Movement] and sustained logistics support to U.S. and partner forces,” said Williams. “Forums like the NTCC are critical for the 21st TSC. Gathering as partners to address shortfalls, discuss lessons learned over the years and find a way ahead is paramount to the growth and development of the logistics enterprise in Europe.” The message of this year’s conference was clear; preparing the theater by building redundancies, modernizing infrastructure, and rethinking how to conduct logistics

operations from factory to foxhole through partnerships. “New security challenges in Europe have triggered new strategic decisions at the national and global level. In such demanding circumstances, logistics, as a quiet and invisible support to forces, needs to be faster and more efficient than ever,” said Rear Adm. Milan Žunic, Croatian Armed Forces J-4 and NTCC Chairman. “I believe this conference is a good opportunity to meet, discuss and exchange ideas on issues regarding logistics capabilities and improvements of multinational solutions for logistics support to our forces in operations and exercises.” Of the seven presentations and discussions that followed, three stood out when addressing challenges and solutions to logistics in the theater. The United Kingdom talked about modernizing how host nations coordinate support, and gave recommendations on how to

prevent problems with version control when sharing planning documents. The French shared how their relationships made through the NTCC were critical to accomplishing a military movement within 48 hours. They also shared their thoughts on how NATO could better coordinate and share resources in times of crisis. The SHAPE ACOS J4, Brig. Gen. Carla Harding, gave one of the most thought-provoking presentations. Her briefing made two clear points; the COVID pandemic forced logistics planners to acknowledge the growing complexities of global logistics, and logisticians have an even greater responsibility to inform and advise commanders how to navigate said complexities. Before the group discussion, Harding concluded her presentation explaining how logistical resilience, both civilian and military, is a key element of enablement. “Today is too late for logistics,”

said Harding. “If your logistics is not in place in peace time, it will not be available in crisis and conflict.” The conference concluded with the induction of Bosnia and Herzegovina as a new member nation and the Joint Support Enabling Command as an observer organization. The NTCC chairman handed his responsibilities to the next nation representative and made his closing remarks. The next time the NTCC members will meet is the steering committee in October. The NTCC steering committee meets twice a year and is where the host nation support action officers meet to revisit issues of mutual military interests, and ways to improve interoperability. For more information on the NTCC and the support they provide please visit their website at https://wss. apan.org/s/NTCC/default.aspx.

Your guide to German bakeries Strolling through the streets of Germany, you will find there are many family-owned and operated bakeries. The technical skills, the love and the passion for this unique craft have been passed on for many generations, and Germans are very proud of their baking culture. Trying traditional German bread definitely has to be on your list of things to try. There is nothing like it across the world. Trust us, we tried. A variety of different breads, rolls, cookies, pastries and cakes are offered daily in German bakeries. People are drawn to these bakeries because of the delicious scent of these freshly baked goods. On your quest to find the perfect bakery you might have come across two labels: “Konditorei” and “Bäckerei.” The difference is quite simple: Konditor translates to pastry chef and you will find a larger variety of sweet delicacies than at a regular Bäckerei, which focuses on savory delights like bread and rolls. All bakeries will offer a smaller selection of cakes as well. The craft of baking bread in Germany explained by a German baking master The principles of baking bread were established thousands of years ago. The basic ingredients are flour, yeast, salt and water, and the baking process involves only four key steps: mixing, proving or fermenting, baking and cooling. Though it sounds fairly simple to become a baker, certified bakery master Josef Berrens says it takes a lot to become a certified baker. With his wife and two

sons he runs a family business in Speicher, a German community located not far from Spangdahlem Air Base, Hotel & Café Berrens. To become a “Brot” or “Bäcker Meister” isn’t a small thing; it takes a few years, Berrens says. After completing school, one must complete a three-year apprenticeship to learn the ins and outs of bread making. Apprentices also clean up the bakery and participate in all stages of running a bakery. After the apprenticeship, they are eligible to work in a bakery. After five years of work experience they are finally eligible to train to become a “Meister” (master). At this point they need to attend school in the evenings for two more years. They must pass four exams dealing with education, theory and chemical processes, mathematics and one practical exam, which includes preparing a display of their products with a theme. Once a Meister, they are allowed to take on apprentices of their own and teach the trade of bread making to other young apprentices. Berrens has three other Meisters working for him and one has been employed with his business for more than 30 years. The Meister works about 12 hours a day, including Sundays. “We start working about 3 or 4 in the morning,” Berrens said. “As the owner of the business, I usually don’t get to bed before 9 p.m.” The Berrens’ bakery produces about 60 different kinds of bread, about 50 different pastries and donuts and more than 20 different cakes.

Continued from front page of Properties section does not cut or toast like American white bread, but it tastes even better. Because the bread is fresh and doesn’t last as long as store-bought bread, Germans typically visit the bakery every couple of days. Rolls are popular breads throughout the country. There are almost as many varieties of rolls as there is bread. At the bakery, just simply point to what you would like. The best choice is usually a mix of some dark rolls, seed rolls (sesame seeds, sunflower seeds or caraway seeds) and plain white rolls. Many German hotels will offer white rolls for

breakfast that taste wonderful with marmalade or honey. Plain white Brötchen are continuously baked in most bakeries, so they are always available and fresh. The darker rolls with seeds make great sandwiches when filled with ham, salami or cheese, tomatoes, cucumbers, eggs or leafy salads. They are quite nutritious, and offer a good amount of fiber. Soft pretzels or Brezeln tend to be best in the south so make sure to get some when you’re discovering Bavaria! Every day, 1,200 different kinds of fine pastries are said to come out of German bakeries.

Your guide to German breads and buns The most common and least expensive bread is known as Roggenmischbrot. It is a rye and wheat flour mix. Bauernbrot is similar to Roggenmischbrot. They usually come in round loafs, a shape that has not changed for hundreds of years. Weizenmischbrot is also similar to Roggenmischbrot, it’s a little lighter in color but also made with different proportions of wheat and rye. For a slightly more expensive bread with a higher nutritional value, try Vollkornbrot (Whole grain bread). And of course, for white bread eaters, there is Weissbrot. It

Army re-activates historic airborne unit, reaffirms commitment to Arctic Strategy

Soldiers assigned to the 2nd Brigade Combat Team (Airborne), 11th Airborne Division, stand at Pershing Parade Field during the reflagging ceremony of the 11th Airborne Division at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, AK, June 6. The activation returns the historic 11th Airborne Division to an active Army role, with a focus on operations in extreme cold weather and mountainous high-altitude environments. The ceremonies at Fort Wainwright and JBER reflagged the 1st Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division and the 4th Infantry Brigade Combat Team [Airborne], 25th Infantry Division, into the 1st and 2nd brigade combat teams, 11th Airborne Division, respectively. Photos by Senior Airman Patrick Sullivan

by Joe Lacdan Army News Service FORT WAINWRIGHT, Alaska — Several hundred Soldiers gathered in formation within the Alaskan Interior on a bright June morning Monday to take part in the activation of the 11th Airborne Division, posturing U.S. forces for strategic advantage in the harsh Arctic terrain. The 11th Airborne Division unites about 12,000 Soldiers in Alaska under one flag, marking the first time that the Army has activated an airborne division in 70 years. During flag ceremonies Monday at Fort Wainwright and Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, shortened as JBER, the Army also re-designated the 1st Stryker Brigade Combat Team and the 4th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, formerly of the 25th Infantry Division, into the 1st and 2nd Infantry Brigade Combat Teams

of the 11th Airborne, respectively. The activation reaffirms the Army’s commitment to its recently announced Arctic Strategy, which outlines the service’s plan to equip, organize and train with partner units to establish military dominance in the region. The division will be headquartered at JBER and members will wear the unit’s distinctive blue patch with a red and white emblem with angel wings to symbolize the unit’s call sign, “Angels.” The activation also serves another purpose. By uniting the Army units as one airborne unit, Army leaders hope the activation can ignite a greater a sense of camaraderie and enthusiasm for Soldiers serving in one of the U.S. military’s most remote and desolate locations. In recent months, the Army’s senior leaders have met with commanders at Alaskan installations to

address quality of life concerns of Soldiers. Assessments revealed that the previous unit designations did not support unit cohesion. “Experience has told us that units that have a common unit identity is a source of pride,” McConville said during a meeting with reporters. “It’s extremely important. And the history of a unit and the patch matter.” McConville said the Soldiers of the 11th Airborne Division will be equipped with cold weather gear within the next 1 to 2 years. He added that the unit will serve as the Army’s leading experts for Arctic military operations. McConville said that the Stryker Brigade Combat Team based at Fort Wainwright will transition to become a more mobile, infantry-based brigade combat team bolstered with a stronger air assault capability and the skills to maneuver effectively in

extreme cold weather environments. McConville added that the Army plans to move the armored Strykers out of Alaska by the end of the summer as it continues the acquisition process of Cold Weather, All-Terrain Vehicles or CATVs. The 11th Airborne Division originally played a critical role during World War II and the Vietnam War. The Army credits the unit with the amphibious assault landing at Luzon, Philippines, and eventually helped secure the liberation of Manila from Japanese forces. “The 11th Airborne Division has a storied history of valor during World War II in the Pacific and also has a proud history of innovation,” McConville said. “So we expect them to live up to the legacy … We expect them to be masters of their craft in Arctic warfighting and extreme cold weather and high altitude and terrain. We expect them to develop

innovative ways of operating in this environment.” The Army now has a strategically located unit that can quickly deploy to any region, especially those in cold weather climates such as Nepal and India. “Their focus will be on dismounted and Arctic mobility and capabilities of sustained operation in the Arctic [and] extreme cold weather,” said 11th Airborne Division Commander Maj. Gen. Brian Eifler. “In addition, they will be providing those capabilities in other cold weather environments.” Eifler added that U.S. Army Pacific Commander Gen. Charles A. Flynn traveled to Nepal to meet with Nepalese leaders on coordinating more training opportunities with U.S. Army infantry brigade combat teams. Eifler said that includes the possibility of taking part in a joint expedition on Mount Everest.

Tips for Military parents planning PCS moves with children by Sonia Clark Military Health System Communications Moving can be hard on military families, especially on children. Moving to a new home, going to a new school, finding new friends — it can be unsettling for kids of any age. Yet there are things that service members can do to prepare for a permanent change of station move that can make for a smoother transition for the children. Army Maj. (Dr.) Dominique Holley, a child psychiatrist and deputy chief at Fort Campbell’s Department of Behavioral Health, shared some important tips for military families to help in the PCS process for kids. How far in advance should parents start connecting with the community they will be moving to? “Short answer is as soon as possible,” Holley said. Sharing information with children about the new location where they will live can be very helpful in helping kids adjust to the idea of living in a new place.

“It will be important to start looking into the known interests of the kids or family such as local parks, scout troops or local churches for activities,” she said. “Moving can be stressful and there typically are mixed emotions surrounding moving from the whole family.” Nevertheless, she said: “Kids generally adapt well overall, forming connections early on to a new place.” What are some suggestions for finding a new doctor? “Enrollment in the Exceptional Family Member Program ensures that any military family member with chronic medical concerns, physical disabilities, mental health disorders or required intensive follow-up support are stationed where services are available for that family member,” she said. Beneficiaries can search for doctors in a new location on the TRICARE website. Providers in most circumstances reach out to receiving installations to provide warm hand-offs to receiving clinics. Additional PCS recommendations regarding medical records: When transferring from instal-

ties to keep children engaged while en route: “Ensure easy access to the most commonly used games and activities and toys while traveling,” Holley said. Also, audio books or tablet computers, depending on the age of the child, can be engaging as well.

lation to installation there is typically no need to transfer medical records as long as there is consistency from one electronic health record (EMR) to the next, Holley explained. While the MHS GENESIS electronic health record is being implemented at military hospitals and clinics across the Military Health System, that transition is not yet complete. Beneficiaries may have to request their medical records from your hospital or clinic medical record department or patient administration division, if the installation you are transferring from or to is not yet using MHS

GENESIS. “Once MTFs migrate to MHS GENESIS from the Armed Forces Longitudinal Technology Application (AHLTA) EHR, then they will no longer need to transport paper medical records from one MTF to another,” Holley stated. The process of requesting medical records takes about one or two weeks and requires the approval of behavioral health care providers. “This request should be made about a month prior to PCS to ensure time to obtain records when needed,” Holley said. When traveling to the new location, Holley suggested these activi-

Should parents try to keep kids involved in the same type of activities at the new location? “There are no correct activities necessarily to involve kids in. It largely depends on interests or passions of the kids,” Holley said. “If they love certain sports or hobbies, then it makes sense to ensure to make efforts to continue those.” She also suggested that the move might also be an opportunity to try new things and introduce kids to new interest that may be unique to the new school or area. Are there ways to make goodbyes less difficult for the kids? “Focus on all the positives of a new place,” Holley suggested. “Parents should highlight unique features of the new environment with activities that kids would enjoy.” Planning enjoyable activities in the new city or state ahead of the move can help make the move something to look forward to. Another thing to consider is to plan a return visit to see close friends or family. “Leaving certain people is particularly difficult for kids as well as adults,” Holley said. Any tips for helping kids get organized and prepare for the move? Make sure to keep commonly used games and toys away from movers so that they are easily accessible for kids during the move. The same applies for their favorite items of clothing, shoes, etc. Help kids pack a personal bag of their most beloved items to give them a sense of responsibility or control over those things. “Often times, kids don’t have a lot of control over what’s happening,” Holley said. “Giving them options and helping them to feel empowered with small decisions can be helpful.” Additionally, consider assigning specific tasks during the move for children to focus on. For example, they may oversee ensuring the family pet is fed or has supplies stored away for easy access. Airman creates patriotic paint scheme for NASCAR race car by Katie Lange Department of Defense News If you’re a NASCAR fan, you may have seen the No. 31 Chevrolet Camaro SS zipping around the track at Charlotte Motor Speedway over Memorial Day weekend. If you’re a service member or history buff, you may have noticed its coloring was in line with the olive drab that was prevalent throughout the military for much of the 20th century. There was a reason for that, and it’s all thanks to Air Force Staff Sgt. Sabatino DiMascio. The six-year veteran of the Air Force is passionate about history and racing. Thanks to his graphic design skills, he was the guy behind the No. 31 car’s paint scheme. DiMascio, 26, of Middletown, Delaware, works in public affairs at Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst in New Jersey. It’s a role he swapped into last year after previously work-

When the Air Force opened a contest last fall for Airmen to submit designs for the paint scheme for a NASCAR Cup Series car, the staff sergeant was all about it. This year is the Air Force’s 75th anniversary, and DiMascio said he picked a green paint scheme that paid homage to the C-47 Skytrains that flew over Normandy, France, during the early hours of D-Day in World War II. “When I was trying to think of what design I wanted to do, the C-47’s history and the dynamic design that I could do really sticks out,” DiMascio said. “I wanted to design a car that stood out and signified a great part of our history, both Air Force and Army Air Corps.”

His design didn’t win the contest, but his public affairs connections and prowess did help bring his creation to life. DiMascio contacted Jordan Anderson, who owns the No. 31 Camaro, and asked if his team would consider using a patriotic paint scheme during a Memorial Day weekend race. “It turns out that [Anderson’s] grandfather, Maj. Ralph Clifton Anderson Sr., flew into D-Day on a C-47,” DiMascio said. Anderson was interested in the idea, so the pair reworked the design DiMascio had submitted for the Air Force contest. Aside

from the olive drab color scheme, they added gold plating, as well as black and white “invasion” stripes like the ones that were painted on Allied aircraft during World War II. The stripes were crucial for crews returning to their bases to be identified as friendly aircraft. When Anderson got approval from his sponsor to make the design happen, the wrap was printed at the race shop and the team applied it to the car. The cars aren’t painted with a paintbrush or airbrush; they’re covered in a vinyl, decal-like wrap that’s cut to precision and then applied to the car like wallpaper. The finished product included a decal dedicating the car to Army Sgt. 1st Class Jeremy W. Griffin, a Green Beret who was killed in September 2019 in Afghanistan. DiMascio, who did some racing of his own when he was stationed in Washington State, said he would love to see more opportunities like this going forward for other airmen — and, of course, for himself. “If it was up to me, I would be doing not only my normal job on active duty, but if I could get the Air Force to pay me enough money, I would be out there racing myself,” he said. The No. 31 Camaro, driven by Myatt Snider, placed 10th out of 38 cars in the Memorial Day weekend’s Xfinity Series Alsco Uniforms 300 race.

PFAHLBAU from Page 1 and educational exhibition that transports you back in time. History Pfahlbau Open Air Museum presents archaeologically reconstructed versions of lake dwellings that existed during the Neolithic and Bronze Ages. They are popularly known as pile dwellings, as the houses were erected atop wooden pilings pounded into the ground, underwater. Situated in the middle of the oldest nature reserve in Lake Constance, construction of Pfahlbau Museum began in 1920. Construction was done after the remains of a 4000 BC Neolithic settlement were found at an archaeological excavation in a bog close to the Federsee and Bad Schussenried. Pfalbauten – Pile Dwellings Pile dwellings were in existence for a long time along the shores of most large lakes in Switzerland, Italy, France and Germany. It is known that there were approximately 100 to 400 settlements that once existed around Lake Constance. These lake houses on stilts were built

due to their proximity to fresh water, food supplies and trade routes. It was easy to keep domestic animals in the village while keeping wild animals and human raiders out. The stilts served as protection against flooding and offered some defense against vermin and pests. Open Air Museum Pfahlbau Museum is one of the largest open air exhibitions in Europe. It features two villages comprised of 23 different dwellings. All are linked by wooden bridges. Once paying for the entry ticket, visitors are ushered into a circular multimedia room. The impressive visual presentation of the lake’s images were projected on the walls and ceilings of the “Archeorama.” The doors then opened and visitors are ushered outdoors into the entrance of the main Pfahlbau village. Back in time This museum is like stepping back in time when exploring the dwellings and crossing over the bridges. Seeing the re-enactors dressed in Bronze Age clothing also transports visitors back to this

fascinating ancient world. The dwelling’s exhibitions presented day-to-day life for the villagers. Visitors can see also tools for basket weaving and woodwork as well as nets and spears for fishing, etc. On the shore visitors can try their hand at boat carving using ancient tools, making fire with primitive tools or playing music with ancient wooden instruments. Traveler tips Make the most of your trip to Lake Constance by visiting other “must-sees” in and near Uhldingen: • Birnau – the imposing baroque Basilica is a beautiful holy sanctuary with an amazing lakeside view of the Bodensee. • Meersburg – this quaint medieval town is only 8 km from Pfahlbauten museum. The castle is not to be missed. How to get there By car, Pfalhbau Open Air Museum in Lake Constance is approximately 2 hours south of Stuttgart and 3.5 hours south of Kaiserslautern and Wiesbaden. Address: Strandpromenade 6, D-88690 UhldingenMühlhofen/Unteruhldingen
