7 WS, NATO allies join forces for Cadre Focus Story and photos by Airman 1st Class Joshua Magbanua 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs WIESBADEN — The 7th Weather Squadron kicked off a weather-related exercise with NATO allies June 12 in Wiesbaden. This is the second year the squadron invited NATO allies for Exercise Cadre Focus and the first year the training took place in Wiesbaden. The 7 WS partnered with allies from Germany, Poland, and Hungary to enhance their ability to work together in the field. The training event also served as a re-certification course for Airmen of the squadron. Through Cadre Focus, Airmen of the 7 WS aimed to enhance their capability to provide weather support for U.S. Army operations in Europe. Although the squadron falls under the Air Force’s 435th Air Ground Operations Wing, its mission is tied to the Army. “The 7 WS mission is to support U.S. Army Europe; we go where they go,” said Master Sgt. quality and safe to drink. The 786th Civil Engineer Squadron Water Plant and Exterior Utility sections operate and maintain the KMC water distribution systems and equipment. CES personnel work 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to ensure the system is pressurized and maintains sufficient disinfectant (chlorine) residual. CES personnel conduct daily operational monitoring to maintain the high quality of their final product — our drinking water.

charge of education and training. Hollatz serves as the leading NCO for the current training event. “It’s a training exercise that we try to do at least twice a year,” he said. “It’s designed to train on some of the basic soldier skills that we don’t get through the Air Force. We train on them so we can be proficient and work closely with some of our Army counterparts.”

Kaiserslautern American The training began with classes which included topics such as weather codes, equipment operation, casualty evaluation, and requesting medical evacuation. Throughout the week, exercise participants are scheduled to apply what they learned in the classes through field training. The field training portion on Cadre Focus includes land navigation, moving while under fire, and a vehicle rollover scenario. At the end of the week, participants

from the NATO partners are slated to showcase their equipment. The intent of the exhibit is to exchange information between the allies and understand how they can work together more efficiently in joint missions. Hollatz stressed the importance of joint exercises, saying that understanding one’s allies is crucial to mission success. “It’s a really good opportunity to show them how we train and what we do,” he said. “We’re also getting

June 23, 2017 them to show us what they do. It just opens that dialogue and gets us used to working together. This is the time that we want our NATO partners to talk about their stuff, what they’ve got. It’s good to know what their capabilities are and what our capabilities are. We’re here in Germany basically to support NATO,” he continued. “If NATO goes to war, we’re going to fight together. So it makes sense to train together.”

School Liasion Officers connect KMC by Airman 1st Class Savannah L. Waters 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Parents are their children’s biggest advocate, and when families are transitioning between schools, it’s impor tant for parents and guardians to speak up and know what their children need. The Kaiserslautern Mili tary Community School Liaison Officers are commu nity facilitators who connect schools, families, and com munity services to address education issues impacting military children. “My job is to ensure the successful transition of mil itary children from school to school, whether it’s trans ferring credit hours for a high school student or mak

ing sure children that need special education services or individualized education plans receive the care they require,” said Sarah Dorosky, 86th Mission Support Group School Liaison Officer. SLO duties include advis ing the installation com mander on matters relat ing to schools and military child education; promoting communication and col laboration between schools, military organizations, community ser vices, students and parents; and providing transi tion assistance and information for families moving to the KMC. “My family and I will be (making a permanent change of duty station) this summer,

and I’ve never moved with schoolage children before, and certainly not overseas,” said Master Sgt. Kimberly Franklin, 7th Air Force Judge Advocate military justice noncommissioned officer in charge. “Ms. Dorosky was able to provide me with a lot of useful information that I will need upon arrival to register my child for school.” Connecting par ents and students with information, resources, and people, SLOs work togeth er from base to base, helping fami lies make sense of processes that can appear difficult to tackle. These transition experts help resolve issues when they cannot be resolved through

proper chain of command and provide consistent sup port for families and students throughout the world. There are 11 Department of Defense Education Activi ty schools in the KMC and just a few Army and Air Force SLOs in the area helping more than 8,000 students make a positive school transition. SLOs also help students who attend private schools, internationals schools, and children who are home schooled find the options that work best for them and their family. Understanding the struc ture of DODEA schools, what a family’s options are, and understanding education policies can go a long way toward making a permanent change of duty station go more smoothly.

“I love helping families transition into the area,” Dorosky said. “Most of the time, they are very excited and I am excited for them because I know the kind of positive experiences they can have here. cards from Grandma, holiday presents, bills, special online orders, or cookies from Mom, the mail touches each of us every day. Fortunately, mail service is relatively quick and efficient despite being over seas. However, family mem

bers and mailers back home need to know a few important pointers about mailing to an overseas APO or FPO. Inform your correspondents NOT to include “City” and/or “Country” before or after the PSC, UNIT or APO number. United States Postal Service (USPS) international agree ments require mail addressed with city and country names anywhere on the address to be sent to the host country’s international postal system. Use APO (for Army/Air Force Post Office) or FPO (for Fleet Post Office) for the city, and either AA, AE, or AP for the state. For European/Africa APOs, use AE. Using the for eign city and country name will most likely cause the mail to be handled through international mail channels instead of the military postal system. Host country customs could levy import customs duties based on the merchandise value in the mail you receive through the international mail system. USPS processes par cels using automated sort ing machines. If a package is incorrectly addresssed, it could potentially get stuck in an automation loop situation. This mail is enventually manu ally sorted and sent through the

international mail system. Bottom line: Do not include foreign city or country name as part of the mailing address or the customs declaration form. Contact your local Air Force installation postmaster for addi tional information on how to properly address mail bound for overseas military postal service members.

Before and after the repeal by Ashley Carothers I’m often asked by younger Soldiers and Airmen: what was it like serving under don’t ask, don’t tell? My response, “I was an actress.” Every day I lived a double life. I would pretend to be interested in men. When out with co-workers I would flirt with guys who flirted with me just so no one would question my sexuality. Although, this “cover” didn’t always work and often I would be asked by close co-workers or their spouses if I was a lesbian. I would quickly laugh it off and deny who I truly was. It wasn’t easy especially at large functions where it seemed that everyone had their spouse, girlfriend, or boyfriend by their side; I couldn’t. Instead, if I was dating someone they would be in the shadows hidden in their camo uniform blended in with the crowd as I received an award. Life was difficult but I wasn’t alone in this. There were many of us in the same boat so to speak. We got together far from co-workers or

anyone that we would know just so we could breathe. There was a constant fear of being “outed” and due to this you always watched your steps very closely. Even though I was fully capable of doing my job and fulfilling my duties, I would have been kicked out if the truth ever came out. 2011 was a very exciting and yet scary year. We were pushing towards equality and getting don’t ask, don’t tell, repealed. Soon, I began my own personal journey of having to tell my family while for months I had been helping my fellow lesbian, bisexual, gay, transgender service members deal with coming out and at times being disowned by their loved ones. I faced my fear of being disowned so that my family wouldn’t read about it in a newspaper article or Facebook post. I consider myself lucky. I wasn’t disowned but shown a deeper love from my parents who I can say have always had my back. My mom couldn’t believe that some of my friends and fellow service members were being

disowned by their families when I told her. I’ll never forget when she said, “Then you need to become their family.” That statement stuck with me. Family are those you surround yourself with who love you, accept you for who you are, and protect you. After that conversation a weight and sense of guilt left my body. Finally, I was free so to speak, but I still had some time before President Barack Obama signed those papers, so back to hiding I went, at least at work anyway. Right before the repeal however, it was made known to my command who I truly was. A few of us were excited about the upcoming repeal and just days before we marched in the Pride Parade in Mannheim, Germany. Talk about a sense of pride to be marching with my soon to be open LGBT actively serving brothers and sisters. Again, I consider myself lucky. My command was supportive and made sure that I was protected leading up to the repeal. After the repeal we celebrated.

Stars and Stripes joined in on the festivities to capture the spectacular moments. The following day I walked into work receiving high fives, hugs and smiles. I didn’t know it but my face was on the front page of the paper from the celebration the night before. It was a liberating feeling being a part of such a military family that was willing to accept me. I hadn’t changed, I was still the same person, and still Staff Sgt. Carothers, the only thing that changed was that they now knew me better. Was it always rainbows and unicorns with endless sunshine, of course not! Nothing that glorious can last right? I ran into and worked for those that were not as supportive. Those who were not respectful to my partner or LGBT Airmen. How do you deal with those individuals? It’s simple, rise above. Keep your head up, be proud, know your job better than anyone, and do what you need to do to stay successful. Did I mention be proud? Be proud of who you are.

Understanding the Air Force enlisted evaluation board process by Staff Sgt. Alexx Pons Air Force Personnel Center Public Affairs JOINT BASE SAN ANTONIORANDOLPH, Texas — The Air Force promotion system promotes the most fully-qualified noncommissioned and senior noncommissioned officers based on the quality of their records and other weighted factors, while recognizing an individual Airman’s potential for advancement to the next rank. Enlisted evaluation board panels consider more than 35,000 promotion records each year. For Airmen holding the rank of technical, master or senior master sergeant, the Air Force Personnel Center plays a pivotal role in promotion cycles. Possessing a general understanding of the enlisted evaluation board process is vital for Airmen promoting to the SNCO tier. Board-eligible Airmen can view their Data Verification Brief, located in the Virtual Military Personnel Flight, 120 days prior to the board convening date. These dates are published and made available to Airmen via myPers. The schedule of dates can be found by selecting “Promotion” from the left side of the myPers enlisted page. The DVB reflects information such as duty history and decoration data that will be displayed to the board. Members should also use the Personnel Record Display Application, found within AFPC Secure, to view their “As Is” or current-state record for any missing or erroneous documents. “If Airmen notice inaccuracies with their DVB or evaluation record, they need to contact their servicing Military Personnel Section, Commander’s Support Staff or the Total Force Service Center as soon as possible,” said Capt. Jason Christie, Air Force Selection Board Secretariat senior recorder at AFPC. “Airmen should also note that their records will not meet the board without their top

enlisted performance report, and it might not receive the score it deserves if other documents are missing or inaccurate.” The evaluation board process begins with board member selection. A general officer is charged with overseeing the board, which is divided into panels consisting of one colonel and two chief master sergeants from each respective career field’s general category. Air Force Specialty Codes are divided into four career field categories: operations, maintenance, mission support and medical. The largest career fields within each AFSC garner a board member. “For example, a mission support panel on a senior NCO evaluation board will have one mission support group commander and two mission support chief enlisted managers from the two most prevalent career fields that they will be scoring,” Christie said. “Dividing the records in this manner ensures a wide base of knowledge, experience and expertise on each panel, while affording fair and equitable treatment of board-eligible Airmen.” Once boards convene, the duration is typically four weeks for master sergeant, three weeks for senior master sergeant and two weeks for chief master sergeant promotion before the board adjourns. Boards are convened under the provisions of Air Force Instruction 36-2502, Enlisted Airman Promotion/Demotion Programs, and operate for the Air Force chief of staff under direct guidance of the board president. The formal board charges for each board are published on myPers, released no earlier than the public release date for each promotion cycle. The primary tool board members use to review an Airman’s record is the electronic Board Operations Support System, or eBOSS. Records appear within eBOSS in three stacks: The left stack contains the last five years of performance reports filed in chronological order, with the

most recent on top. The center stack contains all citations or orders for approved decorations, along with any record of non-judicial punishment, such as an Article 15, filed by the proper authority. The right stack is the evaluation brief. This is a computer-generated, one-page snapshot of the NCO/SNCO’s record highlighting information such as date of rank, duty information, service dates, etc., as applicable. “There are no established time limits for board members to review and evaluate these records,” said Christie. “The board stays in session until all records are given equitable consideration.” Members then assign numerical ratings in eBOSS to records using the scoring scale that ranges from 6 to 10 points, with 7.5 representing an average record. Records earn a panel composite score, the sum of three board member scores, for a minimum score of 18 and a maximum score of 30. All scoring is performed independently by secret ballot without the benefit of discussion between board members, unless a significant disagreement occurs in the scores on a particular panel. Should a board member identify a record-based matter which raised concern, they are authorized to address the concern with the board recorder who brings it to the attention of the board president. The president may then approve bringing the matter to the attention of all board members. A common disagreement that arises during promotion boards is called a split. Splits are defined, in AFI 36-2502, as significant disagreements between board members concerning the score of a record, typically a difference in a score of 1.5 or more points between any two panel members. To resolve a split, all scoring stops and voting panel members must be present to discuss affected records. Only panel members with split scores are allowed to change their scores in the process of resolving a split. Final resolution

occurs when there is a difference in a score of 1.0 or less points between any two panel members. “Once the board adjourns, the selection board secretariat forwards composite scores to the Enlisted Promotions Office where they are multiplied by a factor of 15,” Christie said. “This results in a total board score ranging from 270 to 450.” Board scores represent a partial percentage of total promotion points: 66 percent to master sergeant, and 75 percent to senior and chief master sergeant. That total board score is combined with other “weighted factors,” such as decoration points, Promotion Fitness Exam, Skills Knowledge Test and the USAF Supervisory Exam, to formulate a final score. With final points calculated, an overall merit list within each career field is generated. The quota for each field is applied, with each receiving at least one promotion to the next higher grade. All Airmen at or above the cutoff line are then selected for promotion. “When the board results are released, Airmen can view their “As Met” records online,” said Christie. “If an Airman is not selected for promotion and has questions, it is highly recommended they contact the Enlisted Promotions Office at AFPC. For some, errors in a record or missing material could have impacted their non-selection and could be grounds for an appeal.” If an appeal is approved, the Airman meets the next available enlisted supplemental board. The technicians at the AFPC Enlisted Promotions Office can explain that process in detail. 720 EOD wins Team of the Year by Sgt. DJ Borden 16th Sustainment Brigade Public Affairs Office

Members of the 702nd and 720th Explosive Ordnance Disposal Companies competed for the U.S. Army Europe Team of the Year at the training area in Baumholder, June 4-9. Both units fall under the 16th Special Troops Battalion, 16th Sustainment Brigade, and are the only EOD units under USAREUR. Three two-man teams each comprised of a leader and a member competed in the weeklong USAREUR level TOY competition. One team representing 720 EOD was Staff Sgt. Andrew Himple, leader, and Specialist Christopher Thé, member, who had not worked together for long, but agreed that events like TOY enhance proficiency and readiness. “It keeps our skills fresh so we don’t lose [our] capability,” said Himple. “This increases my team’s readiness. By working together, we know what each other’s needs are.” Himple expressed his pride in his team and was pleased with how well they did. “I’ve been happy with my team’s performance,” Himple said. “During the ruck march we came in first. I was worried because there was a lot of uphill and I’m getting old so my body doesn’t like walking that with weight on, but I’m happy with our performance.” Thé used the competition as a tool to prepare himself for real-world scenarios.

“They throw a lot of things at you quickly so you have to think on your feet,” said Thé. “When they recreate [these EOD scenarios] for me, that’s been the best kind of training.” Organizers challenged the teams with three to four different scenarios daily.

It was a mental and strategic challenge and a battle against the elements, as teams toughed it out against heavy rains and high heat. For most of the events, organizers gave the teams two hours to finish and graded them using the Combined

Arms Training Strategies system. The events included a dismounted Improvised Explosive Device lane, a rescue lane armed with land mines, and a 12-mile ruck march.

Since it does not say anything about the real condition of the car, passing inspection is hardly enough proof that the car will remain reliable. These should be put down in writing. In Germany, the average total life span of a car is 10 years. After eight years, rust is a significant danger for almost every car in Germany and, therefore, is considered to be normal wear and tear. When buying a new car from a dealership, the warranty period is two years. It is reduced to one year if you buy a used car from a dealer. Only when buying from a private person can the warranty be excluded completely by terms such as: “as is,” “with all faults” or “Gebraucht wie besichtigt,” which means “bought as seen.”

It is also important to verify the seller’s name on the bill of sale and to keep a copy of the power of attorney if the seller is selling on behalf of another person. Do not hesitate to ask to see the seller’s ID. Additionally, you should keep the seller’s local address and phone number on file in case you need to contact them later should a problem arise. Waters 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs With the amount of training, preparation, and paperwork involved, predeployment processes can too easily become a blur. What to expect can vary, but the 435th Security Forces Squadron ensures Airmen who come through their pre-deployment Security Operations Course leave with the knowledge and confidence to execute the mission. The 435 SFS’s Ground Combat Readiness Training Center SOC is a 15-day mission-specific pre-deployment training course held for security forces Airmen of all grades tasked for deployment to U.S. Central and U.S. Africa Command theaters. Defenders from units across USAFE spent the first week of the course in the classroom learning basic combat skills necessary for deployments, ending the classroom portion of training utilizing skill sets such as Combat Life Saver and Radio Telephone Operator, getting familiar with signs of Improvised Explosive Devices and exercising drills of IED searches. Students also received Tactical Combat Casualty Care training from Ramstein medical personnel. Christopher Williams, 86th Medical Group simulation educator, along with a diligent team of instructors, prepared three mannequins to stage three different injury scenarios for the TCCC training, allowing students to put their newly trained skills to the test.

“What we are teaching them with isn’t new technology, but new techniques to perform the proper procedures on a person in a stressful environment,” Williams said. Conducting missions as squads and being evaluated by the 435 SFS instructor cadre, students showcased knowledge of urban operations, close quarters combat, live firing iterations, mounted and dismounted patrols, entry control point operations, and counter-IED operations while at U.S. Army Garrison Baumholder. “Watching the students understand and apply that training to protect and defend a base in a deployed environment is what I love most about being an instructor,” said. Tech Sgt. Ross Richwine, 435 SFS GCRTC flight chief. “It’s a very important job.” During the urban operations, volunteers enacted friendly and opposition forces operations to enhance the training environment. Using live volunteers helps Airmen have realistic targets to not only engage, but also build rapport with, or speak to while conducting their missions. At the end of the day, students will conduct their missions with the confidence all leaders have. “This valuable training is new for some, for others a refresher,” said Staff Sgt. Eric Jeffcoat, 100 SFS base defense operation center controller and SOC student. “Every Airman here should know: it doesn’t matter what rank you are, anyone can become a leader. Don’t be afraid to be one.”

After picking a flick they kicked back, snacked and enjoyed a day much like the ones Wollaston used to spend after school at her home in Phoenix, Arizona. The 86th Airlift Wing Chapel Airman Ministry Center’s Club 7 serves junior enlisted service members of all branches, providing community and a homeaway-from-home. Wollaston spends her days identi-

fying vulnerabilities on computer networks and severs. Ramstein is her first assignment and she said that, while some Airmen can get stuck in their squadrons, Club 7 helped her branch out and make more friends. “My favorite part about Club 7 is the people,” Wollaston said. “Not only is Club 7 itself really inviting, but the people are awesome,” Wollaston said. “They’re sweet and really welcoming to everyone. There’s no drama there. It’s just chill.” “We have four spiritual resiliency pillars at the AMC. Spiritual formation, authentic community, leadership and development, and service to others. We have four Airmen in council positions that are specific to those pillars,” Natalie Luksan, AMC coordinator said.

Airmen eat, socialize, and watch a movie at Club 7 June 10 on Ramstein. Run by the 86th Airlift Wing Chapel, Club 7 is designed to encourage morale and friendship by inviting junior enlisted Airmen to come and enjoy services such as video games, Wi-Fi and food.

The council of junior enlisted Airmen operates Club 7 with the assistance of Chaplains and Luksan. Luksan said many Airmen enjoy the home-style atmosphere at the Club 7 facilities on Ramstein and Kapaun Air Station. She said Airmen relax on the couches and watch TV, enjoy provided snacks, play on all three major game consoles in the game room, and use Wi-Fi. The music room is stocked with guitars and instruments, and on Kapaun the kitchen is stocked with cooking utensils. “We’re all a big family,” said Luksan. “We talk about that a lot. Our council and volunteers provide such amazing ministry to Airmen here.” Wollaston said that it’s mainly the people that make Club 7 feel like home for her. Just like her parent’s house, sometimes the rooms are full of people, noise and activity, while other times they’re quiet, good for studying or oneon-one conversation. “Visiting Club 7 is a really nice, homey and relaxing time for me,” Wollaston said. Wollaston said that she visits Club 7 a lot just to see what’s going on, talk, play games and relax. “I’m usually always there on Fridays because they have free food and it’s definitely a break from the dining facility,” Wollaston said. Luksan said they usually see between 50 and 60 Airmen on Friday nights, partially because they have the option to choose from more than 1,000 movies and 100 games.

The Ramstein Club 7 serves the Friday night meal at 6 p.m. These meals are free to Airmen and sponsored by different groups around base, such as the Kaiserslautern Military Community Top 3 and the Catholic Women of the Chapel. As Luksan explained, everything the AMC and Club 7 offer goes back to building spiritual resiliency. Airmen who want to get involved are welcome to come and help out, Luksan said. They always need a volunteer at Club 7. To find more information on the AMC and Club 7, such as hours and upcoming events, join the Facebook group called Club 7 Ramstein & Kapaun. Seven years later, Heston returns to 361st Civil Affairs Brigade as new commander by Lt. Col. Jefferson Wolfe 7th Mission Support Command Public Affairs Office Something old is new again at the 361st Civil Affairs Brigade. Col. Bradley A. Heston, a former 361 CAB operations officer, took command of the unit from Col. John T. Novak during a Sunday morning ceremony on Daenner Kaserne. He was in his previous position seven years ago when the brigade activated at its current location. “When I departed the 361st in 2011, we were just beginning to gain traction on the road to gaining relevance in U.S. Army Europe,” Heston said. He added he is in awe of the brigade’s accomplishments during Novak’s tenure. “Col. Novak has done the hard work and made the tough decisions to take care of Soldiers, increase personnel readiness and make this brigade combat ready and prepared for all missions,” Heston said. “For that, I am thankful and look forward to sustaining Col. Novak’s initiatives and the momentum he has built, ensuring the 361st Civil Affairs Brigade remains the go-to Army Reserve organization to meet U.S. Army Europe’s requirements.” Brig. Gen. Steven W. Ainsworth, the commanding general of the 7th Mission Support Command, praised Novak and Heston as being dedicated servants to the country. “He will be a great re-addition,” Ainsworth said of Heston, welcoming the new commander and his family to the 7 MSC. Novak focused on the brigade’s readiness and ensuring the Soldiers were involved in the right exercises, Ainsworth said. “There is no one who cares more for the Soldiers of his unit,” he said of Novak. Novak also led the planning for the brigade’s participation in Exercise Saber Guardian 17, a U.S. Army Europeled, multinational exercise, which will take place in Bulgaria, Hungary, and Romania. Novak complimented the efforts of the Soldiers of the 361st, saying they markedly improved every measurable category of logistics readiness. “The results you achieved are truly impassive and — in some cases, I would submit — historic,” Novak said. The Soldiers acted unselfishly to fill gaps, built relationships and communicated professionally across the theater, he said. This included building key relationships with the U.S. Army Europe G 39 directorate, the 353rd Civil Affairs Command, the NATO CIMIC and countries throughout Europe. “While acting quickly with USAREUR to provide judge advocate, transportation, and civil affairs Soldiers to enable five U.S. embassies in Europe was particularly noteworthy, the comprehensive plan you devised with input from all CA and CIMIC stakeholders to support Saber Guardian 17 — USAREUR’s premier set of integrated summer exercises — is nothing short of extraordinary,” Novak said. During Saber Guardian, more than 200 active and reserve civil affairs Soldiers from the U.S. Army, integrated with nearly 40 CIMIC Soldiers from five partner nations, will participate in a major exercise and receive an exter-

2 kg white asparagus 1 kg medium sized potatoes Salt Ground white pepper 1/8 teaspoon nutmeg ½ teaspoon lemon juice ¼ teaspoon sugar 1 tablespoon butter for asparagus water 4-6 tablespoons butter for topping on asparagus Assorted hams such as Schwarzwald Schinken, Lachs Schinken, Koch Schinken, Parma or Serrano Schinken (all are available on the economy)

Purchase an asparagus peeler. This is different from a potato peeler. It slices very thin. Cut off the lower ends of the asparagus, until the woody part is gone - approximately 1 ½ 2 inches. Peel thinly on the asparagus. Make sure you get all the peel off. The peels will be used to flavor the water so don’t throw them away. Save the woody ends as well Use a wide pot to boil the asparagus peels and woody pieces of the asparagus. Start with cold water, add salt, ground white pepper, lemon juice, nutmeg, 1 tablespoon butter, peels and woody pieces. Let this come to a boil and then simmer for ½ hour to 45 minutes.

Remove the peel and the ends from the water. Bring the water to boil again and put the asparagus in. Let the water boil and then reduce to minimum heat and put a lid on the pot. Let it simmer for approximately an hour. Don’t try to hurry the process by boiling them. This will destroy the tips of the asparagus. Peel and quarter the potatoes. They all need to be close to the same size so that they will all be done at the same point. Put potatoes in salted water. Use 1-2 tablespoons of salt in the water. Bring them to boil and then reduce the heat and put a lid on the potatoes, leaving a small gap for air to escape. The time to cook the potatoes varies from 4560 minutes. You really have to watch them closely at the end of cooking so that you do not overcook the potatoes. If you get them out at just the right point they will still have a firm shape, yet be soft all the way through the potato quarter. When you are almost ready to serve, brown the remaining butter. Add a bit of salt. Be careful not to burn the butter. Keep the burner on medium heat. Remove potatoes from water. Put on 4 plates. Make 4 portions out of the asparagus. Drizzle the browned butter over the asparagus. You can put the ham on this plate or allow each person to choose the type of ham they would like from a serving platter. The perfect wine for this would be a medium dry Riesling or a Silvaner, if you like it a bit dry. Another medium dry wine would be Mueller-Thurgau. IT IS IMPORTANT TO NOT THROW AWAY THE ASPARAGUS WATER. We will use it next week to make a nice asparagus soup. Just think how smart you will feel serving asparagus soup in the fall when the season is already gone because you remembered to freeze the asparagus water from the summer when you cooked a nice asparagus meal!

Cloudy with a chance of victory: Weather Airmen keep eyes on the sky

Story and photos by Airman 1st Class Joshua Magbanua 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs WIESBADEN — Sun Tzu, the ancient Chinese general who authored “The Art of War,” once wrote, “know the land, know the weather, your victory will then be total.” This is why the Air Force invests plenty of time and money into training certain Airmen to watch for anything happening in the atmosphere. Whether the sky is wide and open as the ocean, or if there is a storm brewing, weather Airmen collect vital data for planning missions. But not all these Airmen forecast weather for the Air Force; some of them work for the U.S. Army. Known as Army weather support Airmen, they are embedded with

their Army colleagues, who call them staff weather ofﬁcers. In Europe, the 7th Weather Squadron is responsible for providing the Army with expert weatherrelated knowledge. “In a nutshell, we support the U.S. Army in Europe, from the highest operational levels to the lowest tactical levels,” said Capt. Brandon Alford, 7 WS readiness mobility and training chief. “Whatever it is they’re doing, we’re going to do.” Alford said SWOs are just like any other weather Airmen, but with two differences: they work for the Army while still being Airmen, and they undergo extra training to immerse themselves into the Army world. One of the tools the 7 WS uses to help its Airmen mold themselves into the Soldier’s way of life is Exercise Cadre Focus. It is a training program

which is designed to help them stay in step with their Army colleagues. “In order to maintain our combat mission readiness, we have to be certiﬁed in a number of common soldier tasks,” said Alford. “These are things the Army does day to day. This is stuff which is embedded into them … it’s habitual. Some of the extra things we go through allow us to function like the Army. If we can look, feel, talk, and act like the Army, then we can do a lot more to support their mission.” Senior Airman Andrew Childress, 7 WS Detachment 4 weather forecaster, said training to work for another branch of the military was a unique experience. He pointed out the differences in culture between the Air Force and Army. At the end however, he said he was happy about his job and his training.

June 23, 2017 “At first it was strange,” Childress said. “It was like joining the military all over again, because there are different acronyms and new ranks. Everything was a little bit different, but I like it. I enjoy going out to the field, there’s a lot more hands-on stuff that we do.” Childress explained that there are also major differences to consider when it comes to forecasting the weather for Army operations, especially if aircraft are involved. Aircraft and equipment handle weather differently depending on their size and the way they are built, and the Army uses different aircraft from the Air Force, said Childress. In order for a weather Airman to become a SWO, they must be assigned to an Army installation. The Airman would then undergo the training necessary for him or her to be able to work with the Army. This includes the Army Weather Support Course at Fort Huachuca, Arizona. Alford makes it a point to factor weather into the decision-making process for missions, be it an exercise or real-world. “Weather is going to be what you shape your battlefield with, either in our favor or against the enemy,” he said. “If you look at our special operations guys, they will want fog; they want to go in under the concealment of weather. But our pilots want crystal clear weather with open skies and no wind. Weather is important to shape the battlefield and the commander’s decision-making process, and it’s one of the very first things that go into an intelligence summary.” While SWOs are embedded with their Army brethren, they still answer to the Air Force and are bound by the Airman’s Creed, which charges them to accomplish their mission at all costs. This is why the Airmen of the 7 WS are committed to fly, fight, and win, whether rain or shine.

The event will feature more than 150 performances, presentations and displays with more than 500 artists in more than 30 locations such as the Pfalztheater, Fruchthalle, SWR studio, Japanese Garden, Museum Pfalzgalerie, Kammgarn, Youth Center, Theodor-ZinkMuseum and many others. “The excellent cooperation of all local arts institutions and all artists, with the support of the regional economy, helps to create this event,” said Dr. Susanne WimmerLeonhardt, deputy mayor of Kaiserslautern. “This is a sign for the continuous development of our city, its quality of life and its creative, innovative attitude to life,” added Dr. Christoph

Medieval summer market takes place at Lichtenberg Castle by Petra Lessoing 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs The 10th annual medieval summer spectacle will take place Saturday and Sunday on Lichtenberg Castle near Kusel. Visitors can enjoy a historical atmosphere with many attractions. Vendors and actors in medieval costumes will present how life was in former times. The wooden stands and tents will be set up like in the Middle Ages. The medieval market will be open from noon until 11 p.m. Saturday, and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday. In camps, which are set up near the 800-year old castle, knights will demonstrate show fights. Vendors will sell merchandise such as clothes, jewelry, swords, horns, soap and felt items, and former craftsmen such as a blacksmith, shoemaker and a broom maker will show off their skills.

Jugglers and fire-eaters will entertain visitors and music groups will perform medieval music on unique instruments. Visitors can test archery and crossbow shooting. Children can have their faces painted and take rides in a hand-driven merry-go-round. Food stands will serve medieval dishes made from regional products. Fast food will not be included. Admission fee is €5 for adults and €3 for adults in medieval costumes. Parking fee is €1. Sufficient parking is available. Dogs on leashes are authorized. Lichtenberg Castle is one of the most impressive castle complexes. With a length of 423 meters it is one of the biggest castles in Germany. US Youth Soccer

The U.S Youth Soccer Europe – World Cup will take place Saturday and Sunday at the sports field in Schwe delbach (street for GPS: Am Kiefernkopf). A total of 38 teams, with more than 400 soc cer players, boys and girls, con sisting of different age groups, will compete in several games. German teams from the region and U.S. teams from the KMC, Stuttgart and Wiesbaden will take part. Games will start at 9 a.m. A friendship game of the first U.S. youth soccer team playing the Schwedelbach team at 6 p.m. will close out Saturday. The last game Sunday is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Food and beverages will be offered. Children can take part in activities. Admission fee is free on both days.

On Aug. 19, bring your furry family member to the Rhine Ordnance Barracks Special Event Center, Bldg. 237. Registration is open from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m., and the run will begin at 10 a.m. Dogs must be on a leash and friendly. Registration is $7 for adults, free for children and fur children. The first 100 reg istrants receive a free tshirt. Prizes will be awarded for the top finishers in three catego ries. We will have swimming pools for the dogs to cool off, and water for the dogs and humans along the route. This event is stroller friendly.

In addition, ASACS offers Life Skills classes that promote health and personal development in the Department of Defense schools. They sang and danced to 10 patriotic songs that brought tears to their parents’ eyes. RES students have many deployed parents who missed this amazing program, which honors them, veterans and all Americans who love the USA.
