Cody met with Airmen and addressed their concerns regarding the future of the Air Force during an all-call June 15 on Ramstein. Airmen had the opportunity to spend the entirety of the all-call asking questions about issues ranging from entitlements and reducing the force to enlisted professional military education. An Airman asked Cody what his thoughts are on the new NCO Academy format. All future NCOA courses will be a combination of dis-

tance and in-residence learning as opposed to in-residence only, as done before. “We're not going to a completely distance learning environment,” said Cody. “What we're really doing is updating and evolving the way we educate the force. There's a proven methodology that most education, if not the vast majority, has adopted blended-learning. There isn't a lot to be gained in an in-residence domain with an instructor standing at a podium. RIGA, Latvia — The Airmen of the Maryland, Michigan and Pennsylvania Air National Guard took to the skies with Latvian leaders June 10, 2015. During exercise Saber Strike 15, distinguished visitor and partnership days highlighted the importance of airpower and the tools utilized to ensure that airpower is available to those who need it. The exercise is designed to build partnerships and support regional stability in the Baltics with 14 nations and 6,000 service members participating.

Airmen from U.S. Air Forces in Europe and the Air National Guard hosted Latvian president-elect Raimonds Vejonis, Latvian armed forces generals, and several local and national political leaders during the Michigan-Latvian Partnership Day. The adaptability of military children

COMMENTARY

by Trinity Merrell 39th Air Base Wing dependent INCIRLIK AIR BASE, Turkey — The uncertainty of military life may frighten some. There is never truly a “safe ground,” or feeling of complete calmness since around the next corner may be an unanticipated change of plans. You never know when you may have to uproot your life in one place and suddenly have to rebuild your life somewhere entirely different. True as these things might be, I can say with certainty that military life has molded me into a wellrounded person, though it may be a biased thought. Being a military child has taught me more things than I could imagine. For the sake of brevity, I'll narrow that extensive list down to three key themes that have occurred and reoccurred throughout my military child life: resiliency, participation and relationships. When a person enlists into the military, they agree to a life of spontaneity and unexpected change for themselves and any direct family they have or will have in the future. As a result, everyone in that person's family must learn to quickly adapt to whatever sudden events may happen. Children of military members especially learn to roll with the punches — our motto may as well be “adapt to survive.” The obvious element that establishes this talent for acclimation is constant movement. For most dependent children a move is expected every two to five years. Every new place we live, we essentially have to rediscover ourselves and our place in this world. This is especially true of moves to new countries. Not only must we learn how to function with the Americans in this new place, but we must immerse ourselves in the culture of our host nation.

I have been able to experience this particular type of change in the last few years since I moved to Turkey. Living in a predominantly Muslim-based country with very deeply rooted values has given me perspective and respect for the diversity of the world. I have personally learned that the best way to get comfortable and use my time wisely is to get involved.

in the ability to be fully truthful in a first encounter. Too many times I have encountered people who turn out to be a lot different than they appeared to be at first. Most of the time, those people have had the privilege of forming relationships over time. Their friends already know who they are as people, so they don't feel the need to let their guard down and let someone else in upon first meeting. Military children rarely have the luxury of that sort of time. We understand that a firm relationship needs to be honest and open from the getgo. The end goal of this strategy is to sort out those people who can truly understand and care for you the way a true friend would. I've found that relationships built on this mutual trust and understanding go much further than those built on popularity and intrigue. Relationships have become an essential part of the person I've become, allowing me to easily adapt and participate in any community I'm placed in. Movement and change have always been a part of who I am. I've learned that my participation and commitment to new places, while short in their duration, are essential to thriving in that community. Without the experiences I've been privileged enough to have as a military child, I don't think I would have some of the essential life skills I've learned along the way. What others may see as a cumbersome life of uncertainty, I see as world full of endless opportunity for learning and growing as a person. In the end, it is those skills we are forced to learn that set military kids apart from others. We are able to take the resiliency and involvement techniques that we develop from a young age to establish strong foundations with the people around us. Those relationships, in turn, will propel us through life.

Ramstein-Miesenbach recognizes 86th AW commander’s leadership by 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Ramstein-Miesenbach’s mayor Klaus Layes presented an award to Brig. Gen. Patrick X. Mordente, 86th Airlift Wing commander, June 10. The award was given to Mordente for his leadership of the 86th AW and Ramstein Air Base, which abuts the village of Ramstein-Miesenbach. The award highlights the continued cooperation and partnerships between the United States Air Force personnel assigned to RAB and the local communities and their civic leaders. Layes recognized Mordente for two years of “good partnership” through

his leadership and for working with the town of Ramstein-Miesenbach to create a “fruitful working relationship.” He also expressed his gratitude for cooperating with the planning of this year’s Rheinland-Pfalz Tag. “I believe that one of Ramstein’s many strengths are the neighbors that stand by us,” said Mordente, “it has been a true pleasure leading the 86th Airlift Wing and working with local leaders like Mayor Layes has been an honor. Cooperation like this is key to executing our mission of providing responsive combat airpower and maintaining a safe, welcoming environment in which to live and work.”

Just do your best every day. You're not going to be the best every day but if you do your best, that's all anyone can ask. That's the best advice I can give. If you start thinking about being a [chief master ser-

geant] today, you're going to miss everything along the way. Your goal might be to become a chief, just don't miss what's right in front of you.” Cody concluded the allcall by thanking Airmen for their service and hard work. “We can't thank you enough for what you do every day, how hard you work and how well you execute the Air Force mission,” he said. “What you do globally is not lost on anybody in our Air Force. I ask you also extend that gratitude to your families whether they're here or not. I don't believe we could do this without the support and love of our families.”

Autobahn construction

• A construction site is now set up on Autobahn 6 between the Ramstein-Miesenbach and Bruchmühlbach-Miesau exits (western direction). Construction will last for the next five months. Phase 1: A new surface will be laid out and traffic in both directions will be restricted to two lanes. Phase 2: All traffic will be detoured to the lanes leading east, but motorists will have two lanes in both directions. All on-and-off ramps at intersection A6/A62 will remain open.

Nations join for Greek air exercise by Airman 1st Class Tryphena Mayhugh 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Joint terminal attack controllers from the 4th Air Support Operations Group in Wiesbaden, Germany, and the 2nd Air Support Operations Squadron in Vilseck, Germany participated in INIOHOS 2015, a midsized air exercise organized annually by the Hellenic air force (HAF), April 20 to 30, 2015, at Andravida Air Force Base, Greece. The exercise is designed to increase interoperability between the three nations and test their ability to work side-by-side in order to prepare for real world situations. The HAF has organized the exercise since 1988, and this year marked the first time foreign armed forces, both U.S. and Israeli, were asked to participate. “Collaboration among exercise participants on tactics, techniques and procedures is one of the main purposes of INH-15,” said 1st Lt. William Palmer, 4th ASOG unit operations training manager and officer in charge of the exercise. “It marked a milestone for being the first iteration in which the HAF has invited allied partners to participate.” A JTAC is a certified service member who directs combat aircraft from the ground during close air support and other air operations. They fall under the Tactical Air Control Party, which advises ground commanders on the capabilities and limitations of air operations. The U.S. JTACs who participated in INH-15, along with their Greek counterparts, advised the operations of HAF F-16 and F-4 and IAF F-16 aircraft. “Cooperating with the Greek JTACs and the Israeli pilots was an awesome experience,” said Senior Airman Luke Molidor, 2nd ASOS TACP JTAC.

“We each were able to take away very valuable training and accomplished many goals from the exercise. It was a great opportunity to strengthen our relationship with the HAF JTACs and to work together as a solid team and learn from one another.” The JTACs operated out of Kranea and Larissa, Greece, for the full duration of INH-15, while the air liaison officers, who are the senior TACP members attached to a ground unit and function as the primary advisors to the ground commander, spent the first week operating out of Andravida AFB and the following week from Kranea and Larissa.

“The event grew immensely this year and will continue to expand,” Palmer said. “As the 4th ASOG's OIC for INH-15, I can wholeheartedly say that my NCOs and Airmen were absolutely top notch. We are grateful to have seized such an opportunity to strengthen allied partnerships.” The exercise produced another opportunity for the IAF to work alongside allied forces for the first time. “The IAF aircrews highlighted that INH-15 carried additional significance for them as it was their first time flying under the control of NATO JTACs,” Palmer said. “The exercise

was an excellent medium in which to strengthen not only NATO capacities and interoperability, but also that between NATO and one of its major allies.” The exercise not only helped the members build joint relationships on a professional level, but on a personal level as well. “I hope we can continue this excellent cooperation and further strengthen our combat capabilities and partnership with the Israelis and the Hellenic air force,” Molidor said. “I will never forget the bond we were able to forge with this great group of guys.”

Know before you go this summer by Robert Szostek U.S. European Command Customs Public Affairs People scheduled to move to the States this summer should start preparing now by separating things that are banned from import and finding new homes for them. It is also a good idea to apply early for import permits on restricted items, customs officials advise. “Prohibited items include meat and meat products, such as sausage,

pâté and salami, as well as plants, plant products and all destructive devices,” said Mike Dean, director of the U.S. European Command’s Customs and Border Clearance Agency. “If you’re planning on shipping firearms, ensure you have proof that you owned them in the States or have an import permit,” he added. Dean also explained that other important points to remember are: • Owners of vehicles not made to U.S. standards have to ship them through commercial importers reg-

istered with the Department of Transportation and Environmental Protection Agency. However, vehicles more than 25 years old are exempt from this rule. • Most mopeds and motorcycles must also meet U.S. safety and pollution standards and all vehicles must be free of dirt, insects and vegetation. • Wine collections can only be shipped with advance approval from the transportation office. • Endangered species items such

as ivory and some furs may only be shipped if owners can prove they were previously owned in the U.S. or are antiques over 100 years old. • State attorneys general must approve imports of gambling devices. These devices must be registered with the Justice Department in Washington D.C. Father's Day is a day we pay tribute to dads. Perhaps we buy a card, make a phone call or get a gift honoring a dad in our life. Dads of course come in all forms — a father can be biological, adoptive, stepfather, mentor or teacher. Too often we overlook the importance of fathers in the lives of children. Fathers are essential to the healthy growth and development of children and the relationship developed between father and child will impact relationships throughout the rest of a child's life. Fathers play a huge role in the lives of all of their children — sons and daughters. It is the quality of the relationship and the strength of involvement that is the crucial factor — not whether they live under the same roof. Military families are often affected by stretches of separation. For military fathers, keeping a connection with their children is especially important during

long periods of separation. There are ample opportunities for men to step up and into the lives of children without fathers or those without a father figure. The term “double duty dad” refers to a man who seeks to mentor other fathers or build a relationship with a child who may need a father figure. Many men who had no biological father in the home can identify someone who was significant to them as a child — a church youth leader, teacher, coach, family friend, relative or neighbor. This relationship can be life changing and make a positive impact to help a young man move into manhood. So on this special day, we honor dads. Whatever kind of role you play in a child's life, we thank you for all you do and for your special place in our lives. Happy Father's Day! There are great resources in our community to support parents. Family Advocacy, New Parent Support and the Airman and Family Readiness Center are all resources available for guidance and support.

During a multinational offensive-defensive squad movement operations exercise, the A-10 Thunderbolt II, C-130J Super Hercules and B-52 Stratofortress provided close air support and shows of force for ground troops. Saber Strike 15 is a multinational exercise designed to support the stability of the Baltic region by building interoperability between allies' ground and air assets to ensure seamless mission completion. The visits provided upclose perspective to representatives from the participating nations on how Saber Strike 15 enables interoperability between the allies' ground and partner nations and the importance of working together in order to ensure regional security.

I thought it was an awesome idea since the weather was nice and the grass was semi-long. After a few minutes of hearing the lawn mower operating, I decided to check on him. As I looked off my balcony, I noticed him wearing ﬂip ﬂops, shorts and a tank top while trying to pull the lawn mower up the side of the hill. Immediately, I stopped him from proceeding and asked him to get properly dressed for the “occasion.” Mowing the lawn is a more hazard-

It could happen to you … ous event then most people think. In the past ﬁve years, the Air Force has had 41 serious mishaps involving lawn mowers and gardening. The story usually starts with someone not wearing the proper protective equipment and it usually ends with toe amputations, severe lacerations or burns. If you are using a riding lawnmower, there is always the possibility of it overturning. All it takes is one slip while pushing or pulling the lawnmower and the blades can cross over your leg or foot in just a few seconds. Another unfortunate incident is when an object gets stuck underneath the blade and shoots out at the speed of a bullet. I’m sure you have heard of someone mowing

the grass, and they struck a nearby window with an object that was lying in the grass. To prevent injuries from happening to you or a loved one, here are some basic lawn mowing safety tips: • Mow when grass is dry to avoid slipping. • Wear protective gloves, goggles, sturdy shoes, and long pants when you use lawn mowers. • Never mow barefoot, or in sandals or ﬂip ﬂops. • Walk around the lawn, and be sure it is free of large rocks, toys and other objects. • Do not adjust height of cut while engine is running. • Be sure of your footing.

• Be extra cautious on hillsides. Mow hillsides side to side. • Do not remove or bypass safety devices, shields, or guards on switches. • Do not operate mower without grass catcher or guards in place. • Stop mower on level ground and shut off engine before leaving the operator's position for any reason. • Stop mower and inspect blade after hitting objects or if abnormal vibrations occur. • Add fuel before starting the engine, not when it is running or hot. • Do not operate the mower while smoking or under the inﬂuence of drugs or alcohol. Wright Jr. 21st TSC Public Affairs More than 500 noncommissioned officers from across the 21st Theater Sustainment Command and U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz participated in a commemorative group run honoring the U.S. Army’s 240th birthday on Rhine Ordnance Barracks June 12. Leading the front of the formation was Command Sgt. Maj. Rodney Rhoades, the 21st TSC’s senior enlisted leader. The three-mile run gave NCOs the opportunity “to celebrate the great things that we have done for the nation and the world,” said Rhoades. Throughout the run the leaders chanted cadences designed to pump up the Soldiers and help build esprit de corps as they ran down the back roads of ROB. Just past the half-way point of the run, a fire truck sprayed a continuous barrage of water across the road, allowing the NCOs to cool down a bit from running in the early morning June weather. Following the run, Rhoades got in front of the formation and thanked the NCOs for choosing to be a part of the Army and for everything they do for their nation. “It’s been a privilege and an honor to be out here with you all,” he told the formation. Before releasing the group, Rhoades, along with the youngest member of the formation, Sgt. Brittney Taylor, a behavioral health specialist with the Landstuhl Regional Medical Center and a native of Cleveland, Ohio, and the oldest member of the formation, Sgt. Maj. Culinary hike takes place in ‘old world’ by Petra Lessoing 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs The “old world” culinary hike will take place in Heimkirchen 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday. The scenic hiking route is 5.5 kilometers long and features 10 stations, where mainly Palatinate specialties from the so-called “old world” will be served. Heimkirchen is a part of Niederkirchen and is located in the northern part of Kaiserslautern County in the valley of the Gelbach creek, which is called “old world” on historical maps. “A novelty this year is that breakfast items consisting of scrambled eggs, fleischwurst and pastries will be served 9 a.m. to noon on “Brimmepaad,” said Carola Ibrom from the Otterberg Tourist Office. “On

Brimmepaad, experienced hikers have the chance to walk 10 kilometers instead of only 5.5.” Brimmepaad was created last year and leads hikers on intricate paths, trails along meadows, small stairs and little bridges from Heimkirchen to Holbornerhof. The diversity of the scenery will reflect in the food specialties being served. Local clubs and associations will serve bratwurst and shish kebab made of game, meat dumplings with horseradish and sauerkraut, beef salad with fried potatoes, fried meat with coleslaw, smoked trout, potato pancakes and homemade cakes. Drinks include tap beer, various wines and liquors. An exhibition of chain saw works can be seen at station No. 1. The Palzband will provide musical entertainment at

station No. 3 and children can have fun on a jumping castle at station No. 4. A basket maker will present his craftsmanhip at station No. 8. “I recommend to visit the farmers museum on Holbornerhof to experience the development of agriculture in this region” said Harald Westrich, mayor of the Otterbach-Otterberg union community. “I wish all hikers a good time while enjoying the scenery.” Security guards are available at the parking lots and also pass out event flyers. Hikers can start at any point of the hiking path. Signs will be posted. by Petra Lessoing 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Lichtenberg Castle near Kusel will be the stage for a summer medieval market Saturday and Sunday. Visitors can enjoy a historical atmosphere with many attractions. Vendors and actors in medieval costumes will take them on a time trip and present how life used to be in the Middle Ages. Medieval groups will camp in front of the 800year old castle. Knights will demonstrate combat and jugglers, dancers and musicians will entertain the audience. Craftsmen will show off former skills such as soap making, shoe making, broom

making and smithing. Food specialties include medieval dishes made from regional products. Drinking specialties are dark and light beer as well as different types of mead. Saturday, the medieval market with all vendors selling clothes, jewelry, horns and felt items will begin at 11 a.m. The official opening ceremony with all participants will start at 2 p.m. with 12 gun salutes. Knights will present a show fight at 3:30 and 6 p.m. Music and dance groups will perform in between. A fire show is scheduled for 10 p.m. before the market will end at 11 p.m. Sunday, activities will begin at 10 a.m. and end at 6 p.m. Knights will fight again

at 11 a.m., 1:30 and 4 p.m. On both days, visitors can test archery and crossbow shooting. Children can have their faces painted and take rides in a hand-driven merry-goround. Admission fee is â&#x201A;Ź5 for adults and â&#x201A;Ź3 for adults in medieval costumes. Children shorter than a sword (under 4 feet) are admitted free. Lichtenberg Castle is one of the most impressive castle complexes in Germany. With a length of almost 1,400 feet, it is one of the biggest castles in Germany. COMUSAFE delivers inspiration to graduating seniors by Liz Jacobson Ramstein High School intern Gen. Frank Gorenc, U.S. Air Forces in Europe and Air Forces Africa commander, spoke to the Ramstein High School graduating class of 2015, June 5, at the Fritz Walter Stadium in Kaiserslautern. The senior class invited Gorenc to deliver a speech to make their graduation ceremony different from other schools. This was a milestone for both the Ramstein graduating class and Gorenc himself, having never addressed a high school graduation ceremony before. Gorenc stated that he felt privileged to be speaking at such an important ceremony in their lives and spoke with humor, wisdom, and kind sentiment. He began his address with a ‘thank you’ to all those involved in helping the graduates get to where they are. “Thank you to the teachers,” Gorenc said. “I can’t say how grateful I am that there is a cadre of professionals who are keenly interested in educating our youth. They are educating our future, and I think this class of 2015 is a fine example of what’s possible when we have the right teachers.”

Gorenc, after recalling a math teacher he spoke with, offered a joke. “Here’s what I know after 40 years: if I had a dollar for every time I use algebra throughout my day, I would have exactly no dollars.” As the laughter died down, Gorenc spoke on the importance of education and values and how they are a graduate’s foundation. “Life is a journey,” Gorenc said, “and tonight’s graduation from high school marks both an end and a beginning. You started high school as children and you are ending high school as young adults, ready to take on the world. Tonight, you move forward with the education you earned at Ramstein High School and the values you developed from your parents. From this day forward, you will stand on your education and values and reach for the future that you choose.” Gorenc offered what he believes to be the most important advice. “Take charge. Be kind. Be happy.” According to Gorenc, taking charge includes pursuing ambitions with gusto and finding one’s passions, as well as being accountable for both rewarding successes and crushing failures. “In life, the way you handle those challenges and

Gorenc believes that being kind is a key part of success in life, as it builds foundations for the future. “This positive approach will serve you well and you will be rewarded with many friends and meaningful relationships for life. Never underestimate the power of a friendly smile.” Gorenc said he feels that happiness should always be the main concern, whether in a professional or personal aspect. “I know it is cliche to say, ‘if you love your job, you will never work another day in your life,’ but I want you to know that that is absolutely true. I joined the Air Force when I was 17, and 40 years later, I have never worked a day in my life.” He explained the importance of teamwork by including an African proverb he had recently learned while in Cameroon, “If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go with others.” In a final salute to Ramstein’s seniors, Gorenc said, “Ramstein class of 2015, congratulations, and all the best to you in your future endeavors.” Gorenc finished his address with the wise words of his favorite philosopher, Dr. Seuss. “He once said, don’t cry because it’s over. Smile because it happened.”

John R. O’Connor for a memorable “farewell golf scramble” held June 8 at the Woodlawn Golf Course on Ramstein Air Force Base. Although the majority of participants were Soldiers from the 21st TSC, Family members, Department of Defense Civilians and personnel from Installation Management Europe Directorate of Emergency Services among others joined in the fun. The tournament was hosted by the

Rheinland-Pfalz Sergeant Morales Club. “The golf scramble was a tremendous success,” said Sergeant 1st Class Marcus Mitchell, president of the Rhineland-Pfalz chapter of the club. “Not only did everyone have a terrific time, but the proceeds will go to our Sergeant Morales Club to help fund a scholarship that we will award next school year.” A variety of area sponsors, members of regional SMC chapters and wellwishers helped facilitate the event. O’Connor, who assumed command of the TSC in June of 2013, will turn over the command’s reins to Maj. Gen. Duane A. Gamble during a ceremony slated for Wednesday, June 24 at NCO Field on Daenner Kaserne.

Inside Out Do you ever look at someone and wonder what is going on inside their head? Disney•Pixar’s original new film “Inside Out” ventures inside the mind to find out. Story and photos by Bret Helenius The first thing you notice about Klaus Hartmann is his marquee chef mustache and goatee. It is what you would expect from one of the Three Musketeers, curled at the ends perfectly. Right off the bat, you think to yourself “this guy knows his stuff”. It doesn’t hurt that he is tall in stature and has the compulsory chef’s belly. In one of my favorite restaurants, there is a sign that says “Don’t trust a skinny chef.” This is one of the reasons I trust Klaus unconditionally. Chef Klaus has been beating schnitzel senseless and terrorizing eggs for over 35 years in such highly regarded restaurants such as the Hotel Post in Garmisch-Partenkirchen. Born in Baden-Württemberg, he now calls Ramstein home and spends time in Karlsruhe as well. As I sat down with Klaus, the sound of a Porsche 911 thunders by and Klaus remarks “Porsche’s are great, but there is nothing like the sound of a 380 cubic inch V-8 Chevy.” “Cooking with Klaus” is a roving cooking class that Chef Klaus brings to the homes of wanna-be chefs and weekend warriors of the griddle who are interested in learning the secrets from the master. I attended a class with my wife and four other participants in the kitchen of a friend hoping to touch up my amateur skills. As he dons his black chef’s jacket, he whips out a beautiful knife. “There are a number of great knife makers here in Germany, but the best knives come from Japan. There are masters that will only produce a handful of knives a month due to the extreme perfection in the finished product.” A chef’s knife can be related to that of a Samurai’s sword; it is part of them. We were going to learn how to make German standards such as Spätzle, traditional German Potato Salad, Schnitzel and Apple Strudel. I knew this would be a great night once the Ries-

ling started flowing. Klaus likes to have his pupils work hands-on, so we were right in there cutting potatoes and beating eggs. Hand-made Spätzle was a crowd pleaser. It is such a simple recipe (eggs, flour, salt, nutmeg and white pepper) but when homemade, it is delicious. One of the keys is to place the dough on a small flat wooden board, specially made for Spätzle, and shave it off with fast slicing motions so it falls into the boiling water and forms the right random shapes. Once cooked, move it into icy water to firm and then pan fry in a non-stick pan with butter until slightly brown. As the night rolled on, we heard about stories from Klaus’ Harley Davidson biker club days but as Klaus says “I was in the club for brotherhood and to ride. I’m too old for that now.” The schnitzel, which was made from veal, melted in your mouth. Klaus says, don’t cook it took long or it will dry out and become rubber. “I don’t understand why someone would make a breaded schnitzel and then cover it in gravy. You just make it soggy after taking the time to make it nice and crispy.”
