Remembering D-Day: Honoring the fallen Story and photos by Airman Jared Lovett 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs

Six C-130J Super Hercules aircraft assigned to Ramstein Air Base, flew over the beaches of Normandy, France, June 6, during the 77th anniversary of D-Day. In 1944, more than 150,000 soldiers from the Allied Forces stormed Normandy Beach in what is known as the largest seaborne invasion in history. Approximately 4,000 Allied soldiers lost their lives, and the battle changed the course of World War ll. Among the valiant men who invaded the 50-mile stretch of beaches were soldiers from the 37th Troop Carrier Squadron from the Royal Air Force Station in Cottesmore, England. To pay tribute to the brave soldiers who fought on that unforgettable day, the 37th Airlift Squadron, legacy squadron of 37th TCS, conducts See D-DAY, Page 2

D-DAY from Page 1 annual flyovers over Normandy Beach, France. “Being able to honor all of the sacrifices that were made on D-Day and the fact that we’re able to pay tribute to that now gives me chills,” said Capt. Matthew Frizzell, 37th AS C-130J Super Hercules instructor pilot. “The ability to commemorate D-Day with our allied nation in France in this way is a dream for pilots and hopefully the generations that follow will continue to do that.” The 37th AS invited Airmen from the 86th Medical Support Squadron to participate in the flyovers as a way to thank them for their diligence in getting planes off the ground during the pandemic. “If they didn’t go above and beyond their duty, missions would not have gone, cargo would not have been moved and passengers would not have been transported,” said Maj. Joseph Abrams, 37th AS flight surgeon. “So I wanted to say ‘Thanks’ and this was a way that we made that happen.” Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, the 86th MSS ensured Airmen were tested and quarantined allowing Ramstein Air Base to continue its mission as the Global Gateway. “It’s very exciting, getting to see a part of history that definitely shaped the world,” said Senior Airman Brian Holloway, 86th MSS laboratory technician. Because of the continued support of the 86th MSS, the 37th AS was able to continue this honorable tradition and remember the people who fought with courage, sacrificing their lives to put an end to tyranny. “If we don’t constantly do these things and remember the sacrifices that were made, and how we have grown on the shoulders of those giants, then we’re going to forget them and they should not be forgotten,” said Frizzell. “It was one of the greatest generations in our history, especially the United States, so we need to honor that every year, and never forget it.”

The 13th ECWS, which falls under the 4th Air Support Operations Group in the 435th Air Ground Operations Wing, is a specialized weather squadron focusing on weather intelligence tracking for U.S. Army Europe-Africa forces. The 13th ECWS’s new commander, U.S. Air Force Maj. Nicholas J. Reitz, assumed command during the ceremony and hopes the new squadron designation will further facilitate communications between the two services.

“I plan on providing a new level of support to all of our ‘Blackcat’ Airmen, the efforts of which will make their lives easier and enhance their ability to focus on our mission,” Reitz said. “I also plan on empowering our Airmen to make tough decisions, which will enhance warfighting capabilities.” The unit was redesignated to help streamline their areas of support, consolidate leadership duties and focus the 13th ECWS’s duties on a singular mission. The redesignation also distinguishes the unit from the 7th Combat Weather Squadron, a unit with a separate European Command mission. “It improves our effectiveness as a unit and gives us a distinct identity, which helps us operate in a more efficient manner,” said U.S. Air Force Chief Master Sgt. Jason Ronsse, United States Air Forces in

The unit is one of the few expeditionary combat weather squadrons in the service that solely supports and embeds with U.S. Army Soldiers who lack weather

intelligence capabilities of their own. The unit provides Airmen an opportunity to have a joint service experience. “Anywhere the Army goes, we’re going with them to ensure that no matter what they (need) they have it,” Ronsse said. “We also take care of the brigade combat teams and track vehicles. We make sure operations can be successful.”

The 13th ECWS will show their newfound strength by continuing to do what they do best: supporting their fellow service members. “The Army expects us to be able to shoot, move and communicate just like they do,” Ronsse said. “We’re ready to fight. As I always say, ‘(We’re) ready to brief aircraft in the morning and defend the base in the afternoon.’”

Team 21, joint force effort, contains COVID threat during DEFENDER-Europe 21 by Eleanor Prohaska 21st Theater Sustainment Command Global response to the COVID-19 pandemic has been plagued by chaos. National border and travel restrictions constantly change. New strains of the virus emerge. Infection rates wax and wane. From Argentina to China, handwashing, mask wearing and social distancing practices vary. Imagine the battle plan needed to combat the threat of COVID-19 during a multinational military exercise involving more than 28,000 forces from 26 nations across more than a dozen countries. Fortunately, U.S. Army Europe and Africa and 21st Theater Sustainment Command has the knowledge, experience and esprit de corps needed to protect health and safety during DEFENDER-Europe 21 — the largescale U.S. Army-led exercise designed to build readiness and interoperability between the U.S., NATO allies and partner militaries taking place through June. “The COVID mitigation effort for Defender 21 was truly a full Army across Europe endeavor,” said Maj. Mark Moore, Plans Officer for the 21st TSC Distribution Integration Branch. “Starting at Army Europe level and then down to brigade. These folks were instrumental in planning, coordinating, and executing this very complex and ever changing plan. Without them and so many unnamed personnel, we would not have been successful and getting this off the ground.” Prevent, detect and treat Three pillars of the DEFENDEREurope 21 COVID mitigation strategy are to prevent, detect and treat. Essential to operationalizing those pillars is a network of COVID support sites and isolation facilities. Located throughout the European theater, these sites provide personal protective equipment, hygiene supplies, testing, and isolation facilities staffed with a COVID support team. Months of planning went in to establishing sites in Albania, Bosnia, Bulgaria, Croatia, Estonia, Greece, Hungary, Kosovo, Lithuania, North Macedonia and Romania. Led by the 21st TSC Distribution Management Center DIB, a team of logistics professionals made sure the sites were well-stocked with Class II (personal protective equipment, hygiene products, etc.) and Class VIII (medical supplies including pharmaceuticals) materials. Thousands of units of gloves, gowns, testing materials, ventilators, respirators, sanitizers and medical waste supplies were just a few of the items needed. Capt. Josh Dillard, 30th Medical Brigade deputy officer in charge of

Physician). The second PCR testing method pioneered by Staff Sgt. Webb used the International SOS testing facility in Vilnius to obtain quick, certified results, and was successfully utilized for emergency leave during Swift Response 21.

Fawn Oleary

logistics, says transporting medical supplies over international borders during a pandemic presented unique challenges. In addition to timeline constraints dictated by the exercise schedule, participating countries had different COVID protocols, changing border crossing requirements and differing approval wait times. “Everybody’s feeling the effect of needing to operate within host nation requirements,” he said. “Trucks are being turned away from bases because while they are in route, a country has changed its requirements.” Dillard says those types of situations have caused delays and additional paperwork, but they have adjusted and responded, committed to fulfilling their mission. “We do realize the impact of what we do,” he said. “We are a small brigade and are thankful for what we’ve been able to do with the amount of people we have. It’s been a great opportunity for 8th MED LOG to shine.” However, he added that logistics was only one part of a winning strategy. “We couldn’t do this without the medical side,” he said. The 21st TSC Office of the Surgeon and 30th Medical Brigade provide the public health guidance and clinical support at each site. They have implemented testing protocols to identify sources and outbreaks of COVID-19 and monitor for symptoms. When necessary, they conduct contact tracing and are also responsible for segregating confirmed and potential COVID positive individuals. Ever-present, the COVID threat requires constant vigilance. In keeping with the DEFENDER-Europe 21

objective to deter aggression and respond to crisis if necessary, the COVID mitigation strategy prevents infection and demonstrates the U.S. ability to rapidly respond to a viral threat. “The health of the force, and the surrounding communities, is our top priority,” said Maj. Gen. Chris Mohan, 21st TSC Commanding General. “In addition to establishing isolation facilities throughout the theater, we are maximizing mitigation techniques such as masks, enhanced sanitation, physical distancing and rotational shift work to ensure readiness.” Training and moving in a bubble According to Moore, unit administrative and medical tasks are usually complete prior to an exercise or going to battle. But COVID-19, restriction of movement requirements, and related factors changed that. “So the new term developed of ‘train and move in a bubble,’” said Moore. It was the concept used during strategy sessions to meet mitigation requirements. The herculean effort to establish and operate COVID support and isolation facilities and facilitate training in “bubbles” involved dozens of individual and unit contributions. “If it wasn’t for the entire Army community coming together we would not have been able to get it done,” said Moore. The narrative below provides a glimpse into the effectiveness of “bubbles,” host nation cooperation, integrated, total force training and comprehensive COVID mitigation planning.

Cooperation Key to Containing COVID — Siauliai Air Base, Lithuania By 1st Lt. Jedidiah Jones, Contingency Command Officer/ HHBN/USAREUR-AF The Base Operations SupportIntegrator at Siauliai was informed hours prior to movement that an Air Force unit (20 Airmen) had been required to skip the recommended restriction of movement prior to their own transport to Siauliai and would come in “dirty” — the first unit supporting Swift Response! Bringing the ISOFAC online was already a challenge due to conflicting dates and PAX numbers given for supporting personnel. Rapid Antigen Testing was used to quickly ascertain results for the arriving unit, and to have them test out of ROM after a 48 hour isolation. Working with the Lithuanian Defense Force (LDF) and U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Paul Webb, the assigned Air Force Medical Liaison for Siauliai AB, two methods of polymerase chain reaction testing were implemented for additional confidence in results and post exercise retrograde. The first used a pre-existing acquisition and cross-servicing agreement with the Lithuanian Defense Forces (LDF) to have U.S. personnel tested on post by LDF personnel with their own resources. This produced certified results within 24 hours. The flexibility and professionalism shown by LDF in meeting ever changing timelines and PAX lists speaks highly of the LDF’s commitment to the NATO Alliance, particularly Capt. Ernestas Karanauskas (Airbase Resource Coordinator) and Capt. Saulius Greviskis (Airbase

ISOFAC Model Snapshot-Amari Air Base, Estonia Like the 10 other COVID ISOFAC sites throughout the theater, the Amari Air Base ISOFAC aided any Soldier who began to feel ill or show symptoms of COVID-19. Its operation is illustrative of how all sites were established and managed. At Amari, 2nd Lt. Ryan Alfalaij, Main Command Post Company, Headquarters and Headquarters Battalion, U.S. Army Europe and Africa, was the COVID-19 isolation facility officer in charge and Capt. Abigail Peloquin, HHBN, was the base operations support officer in charge at Amari Air Base. If a Soldier participating in Defender-21 at Tapa Barracks or Amari Air Base began to show COVID-19 symptoms, the ISOFAC team would coordinate the transportation and testing. Soldiers would be tested on day two and day eight with PCR tests that were shipped to Landstuhl Regional Medical Center for analysis. The ISOFAC was designed to accommodate 200 personnel — 10 percent of the U.S. Soldier population in that ISOFAC's area of responsibility. Peloquin participated in meetings twice a week to solidify all logistical aspects and to abide by host nation guidance. All of the ISOFACs played critical roles in DEFENDER-Europe 21, providing every unit and Service Member the preventative and curative health care they needed. They were also tangible evidence of the U.S. Army’s commitment to maintaining peak readiness while acting responsibly to prevent the spread of COVID.

by Airman Jared Lovett 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs A civilian employee from the 786th Civil Engineer Squadron paint and sign shop was named Airlifter of the Week May 27, for his innovation and creativity. Michael Heinz, the shop supervisor, has been working at the shop for more than 30 years. During that time he hasn’t stopped looking for ways to innovate. “Since we have the opportunity to produce everything in the best quality at the paint shop, it is

important to me to deliver the best possible quality to the customers at the air base and to keep them satisfied,” said Heinz. Heinz leads the team that builds and designs traffic signs, paints buildings and marks the roads all over base. “He is an amazing leader,” said U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Zachary Sumstine, 786 CES carpenter shop non-commissioned officer in charge. “He has 19 people that work on his team that do amazing work. A lot of it comes from his vision and his ability to make

a product come to life and see that it’s done well.” Heinz was recently tasked by wing leaders to design three quarterly awards boards to be displayed in the Kaiserslautern Military Community Center. While most awards boards on base are made from wood and are small, Heinz’s boards are the firstof-their-kind. The plexiglass boards are a testament to the technical abilities of him and his team. Thanks to the skills of Heinz, recognition will be given to those who display

Ramstein’s best, for all to see. “It’s a great showcasing item for all three wings on base and something we’re all proud of,” said Sumstine. “His abilities to design and put it all together has been a big inspiration for the shop.” When Heinz, a Rheinland-Pfalz native, is not at the paint and sign shop, he enjoys spending his free time hiking with his dog, a black Labrador named Sam. Heinz is also working towards receiving his Painter’s Master’s Degree, which will certify him to train others at the shop.

“For me, it is important to contribute to young people getting a good start in their working life, and to enable this through training at the paint shop,” said Heinz. “This ensures the quality of work in the paint shop and at the 786th CES for future generations.”

Legacy of service by Jennifer Green-Lanchoney 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs

After 22 years of service in the U.S. Air Force, Master Sgt. Daniel Williams, a career security forces member, will retire in June — but that is not where this family’s story of service ends. Williams’ son, Ethan, enlisted in the Air Force a few weeks prior, continuing his father’s legacy and paving his own path. “Ethan is now the fourth generation in our family to join the military,” said Williams. “His mom and I served in the Air Force, his grandfather served and retired from the U.S. Coast Guard, his great grandmother served in the Air Force and great grandfather served and retired from the Air Force.” Williams is currently the operations superintendent for the air advisors in the 435th Contingency Response Support Squadron. The 435th CRSS air advisors have a unique role that allows them to engage, understand and resolve issues for U.S. allies and partner nations. Their success is based on the relationships they form with the partner nation, as well as their ability to tackle complex issues specific to that region. “I feel as if I have big shoes to step into,” said Ethan. “To be able to say that I am in the same branch as my father at the same time period is something that I know many people can’t say, and it makes me proud.” After Ethan completes basic military training at Joint Base San Antonio-

He has served at five duty stations including three deployments and a one-year remote tour to Korea. “Transiting from the military brings a mix of feelings,” said Williams. “I have loved every step of my career in the Air Force and the people are 100 % what made it worth serving. Being a leader and using your skills to enable and empower your teams to complete the mission — that is what I will miss the most.” As father and son look toward new adventures, the opportunity for reflection is not lost on Williams. “My wife Jennifer and I are both extremely proud, humbled and excited for Ethan to continue the heritage of our family to defend the U.S. Constitution and the people of our great nation,” said Williams. “Being a parent is the most important job anyone can have, and I am proud of my son.” Ethan graduated from Kaiserslautern High School in 2020, but has always known his path would

by Eleanor Prohaska 21st Theater Sustainment Command Lives depend on U.S. Army Staff Sgt. Ontario Conyer doing his job. As 5th Quartermaster Theater Aerial Delivery Company's shop foreman and Senior Jumpmaster, Service Member safety is a primary objective. “I am held responsible for all paratroopers on the aircraft,” he confirmed. Conyer is the Aerial Delivery Noncommissioned Officer in Charge and primary jumpmaster for Swift Response 21—a DEFENDER-Europe 21-linked exercise. It is one of the premier military crisis response training events for multinational airborne forces in the world. This U.S. Army Europe and Africa-directed exercise led by the U.S. Immediate Response Force, took place in host nations Estonia, Bulgaria, Romania and Hungary in May. In Hungary, the 143rd Airlift Wing airdropped supply pallets and equipment from C130 and C17 aircraft May 12, at Kenyeri Airfield. 5QM personnel recovered the deliveries and also performed jumps. Swift Response 21 is designed to validate U.S. European Command’s ability to send high readiness forces into a designated area while advancing airborne interoperability among NATO allies. This year, multinational participation in Swift Response 21 involves more than 7,000 troops from 11 countries.

Conyer says working with Allies and Partners has been beneficial. “I have had the opportunity to work with Hungarian Air Force personnel and also other NATO Allies’ load masters inside the aircraft,” he said. “It has been a great experience working with our partners and it's been very helpful.” Conyer, who enlisted in 2013, obtained the coveted Jumpmaster rating after completing Jumpmaster School at the Advanced Airborne School at Fort Bragg, N.C. in July 2017. He enjoys doing his job every day. 5th Quartermaster Theater Aerial Delivery Company packs

parachutes and temporarily store and rig up to 50 short tons of supplies and equipment for airdrop by the Army, Air Force, or other services. As demonstrated during Swift Response 21, they provide personnel and aerial delivery support to USAREUR-AF areas of responsibility; and on order, deploy Soldiers and equipment in support of contingency operations “Seeing our work actually coming out of the aircraft is an awesome feeling and rewarding after all the hard work that we've done,” said Conyer.

Knights Brigade Soldiers assigned to 5th Quartermaster Theater Aerial Delivery Company conducted heavy drop operations in Pápa, Hungary as part of Swift Response and DEFENDER-Europe 21. Knights Brigade performed joint airdrop inspections to ensure the 40 pallets of MREs safely made it to the ground, performed airborne operations of personnel, strengthening the allied partnership with Hungarians. Taking expired medication could lead to disciplinary action by Russell Toof Regional Health Command Europe Public health officials in Europe are concerned about a recent trend of service members who have taken a controlled substance prescription more than six months after it was prescribed, resulting in a positive urinalysis, and something that could be subject to disciplinary action. “Department of Defense Instruction 1010.16, published in June 2020, specifies that a controlled substance prescription expires after six months and any controlled medication used without a valid prescription will be considered illegitimate,” said Col. Paul Kassebaum, the chief of the pharmacy at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center. “Illegitimate use of a controlled substance is subject to disciplinary action.” Service members undergo at least one random drug test per year. “For any positive urinalysis that could be related to a medication, there is a medical review process to determine if the positive urinalysis was due to a prescribed medication,” said Kassebaum. “If the medication was prescribed, the use was legitimate and there will not be disciplinary action. Alternatively, if the medical reviewing officer does not see a valid prescription in the medical record that could have caused the positive urinalysis, use will be considered illegitimate.” Kassebaum said an example would be if someone has surgery and takes prescribed Percocet for pain, they will have a positive urinalysis for opioids. However, the medical reviewing officer will review the medical records, see there was a valid opioid prescription, and determine it was legitimate medical use. Take the same patient who received Percocet for surgery. Nine months later they hurt their back. They decide to take a leftover Percocet to avoid the hassle of making a medical appointment. The subsequent positive urinalysis would not be due to legitimate use since the prescription was expired and no longer valid. “Pharmacy staff counsel patients to not use a controlled substance more than six months after it was prescribed,” added Kassebaum. “Patients picking up medications confirm this when they sign for the medication.” Kassebaum advises that medications should only be taken as prescribed and only for as long as they are needed. If you have a new issue, do not assume that you can safely use old medica-

response en-route patient staging for aeromedical evacuation in support of contingency operations. “Exercises such as this enable the units involved to validate mission essential tasks in support of both the 52nd Fighter Wing and the AOR,” said U.S. Air Force 2Lt Darryl Scarver, 52nd Medical Readiness flight commander. “This is an opportunity to provide us a platform to display that we are ready to answer the call when needed.” Scarver also said that the team played a crucial role in supporting the exercise’s overarching objective of validating the theater-wide concept of medical support from point of injury through definitive care.

Airmen board a C-130J Super Hercules assigned to the 86th Airlift Wing with a simulated casualty during exercise Saber Guardian 21 at Ramstein Air Base, June 2. Airmen with the 52nd Medical Group, Spangdahlem Air Base, and the 86th Aeromedical Evacuation Squadron, Ramstein Air Base, performed aeromedical evacuation missions on June 1 and June 2.

Airmen from the 52nd Medical Group, Spangdahlem Air Base, participate in an En-Route Patient Staging System (ERPSS) training scenario involving simulated patients during Saber Guardian 21 at Ramstein Air Base, June 2. The multinational exercise happens every two years and consists of field training and live fire exercises.

52nd Medical Group Airmen attend to a simulated casualty during Saber Guardian 21 at Baumholder, June 3. The Airmen supported the exercise by providing rapid response en-route patient staging for Aeromedical Evacuation in support of contingency operations.

Airmen assigned to the 52nd Medical Group at Spangdahlem Air Base, participated in the multinational exercise Saber Guardian 21 at Baumholder, May 24 to June 4. The 52nd Medical Group sent a 10-bed En-Route Patient Staging System (EPPRS) team that included 13 medical personnel along with two Medical Logistics technicians and one Biomedical Equipment technician to assist with receiving cargo and equipment set-up. “Our team provides a critical Aeromedical Evacuation capabil-

ity to the Area of Responsibility (AOR),” said U.S. Air Force Capt. Cathy Chavez, 52nd MDG ERPSS team chief. “Through this exercise, our unit has the opportunity to execute AE operations in a joint environment. For the Airmen involved, this is something that not all members of their respective career fields get the chance to experience.” The ERPSS team worked directly with U.S. Army medical counterparts from the 30th Medical Brigade out of Sembach and also with Airmen assigned to the 86th Aeromedical Evacuation Squadron out of Ramstein Air Base. The team’s primary mission during the exercise was to provide rapid

TRICARE health coverage options for young adults by TRICARE Communications Is your child graduating from college this year? Or, are they a recent graduate? This is typically a time of transitions, whether to a new job, home, or city. It’s also a time for many new graduates to transition to their own independent health care coverage. If your child is one of them, TRICARE Young Adult (TYA) is one of several health care coverage options that may fit their needs. “Recent graduates and young adults have lots of options for finding health coverage,” said Debra Fisher, program analyst with the Policy and Programs Section of the TRICARE Health Plan at the Defense Health Agency. “It’s important to explore all of the different ways you can get health coverage so you don’t experience a gap in coverage. One option you may have to maintain health coverage is TRICARE Young Adult.” TYA coverage isn’t automatic. If your child is graduating college or aging out of regular TRICARE, here

are some key things to know about TRICARE Young Adult. What is TRICARE Young Adult? TYA is a premium-based health care plan that qualified young adults can purchase after eligibility for regular TRICARE coverage ends at age 21 (or 23 if enrolled in college). TYA is only available for individuals and isn’t offered as a family plan. When you enroll, you can choose either TRICARE Prime (in certain areas) or TRICARE Select coverage. If you live in a US Family Health Plan (USFHP) service area and are qualified, you can choose to enroll in USFHP for your TYA Prime option. How you get care depends on which option you choose. As stated in the TRICARE Young Adult Fact Sheet, TYA coverage includes medical and pharmacy benefits. However, it doesn’t include dental and vision coverage. You must pay monthly premiums for TYA, as well as associated costs for care. To see current TYA costs, visit the TRICARE Compare Cost Tool.

Who qualifies for TRICARE Young Adult? Your child may qualify to purchase TYA if they meet the following criteria: • Unmarried, adult child of an eligible uniformed service sponsor • At least age 21 (age 23 if a fulltime student) but not yet age 26 • Ineligible to enroll in their own employer-sponsored health plan • Ineligible for other TRICARE program coverage • Isn’t a member of the uniformed services How does a child enroll in TRICARE Young Adult? “You must show as eligible in the Defense Enrollment Eligibility Reporting System (DEERS) to enroll in TYA,” as described in the TRICARE Young Adult Fact Sheet. If you qualify, you may purchase TYA coverage at any time. Unlike TRICARE Prime and TRICARE Select plans, TRICARE Open Season doesn’t apply to TYA. What if your child isn’t already registered in DEERS? You must add your child to the system. Once your

child shows as eligible in DEERS, you can purchase TYA online, by phone, by fax, or through the mail. If you enroll by fax or mail, download the TRICARE Young Adult Application (DD Form 2947) and submit it to your regional contractor. Your completed application must include the first two months of premium payments. After you get confirmation that your application processed, your child must obtain a new ID card at an ID card office. With TYA, you can end your coverage at any time. There are also certain changes in status that will no longer make you eligible to continue with TYA. For example, if your young adult gets married or becomes eligible for employersponsored health coverage, their TYA coverage ends. “The sponsor should keep all information updated in DEERS whenever there’s a change in family or military status,” said Fisher. If your child doesn’t purchase TYA or is no longer eligible, another option they may qualify for is the Continued Health Care Benefit

Program. This health plan provides temporary health coverage for 18-36 months after losing TRICARE. You can also search other health plan options available for young adults through the Health Insurance Marketplace. Keep in mind, when children become adults it’s a TRICARE Qualifying Life Event (QLE). A QLE may mean different TRICARE health plan options are available to you and your family members. If you want to make a change to your TRICARE health plan, you must make eligible enrollment changes within 90 days of the date of the QLE. You can learn more about QLEs by downloading the TRICARE Qualifying Life Events Fact Sheet. Your child should review all of their health plan options, including military and commercial, before deciding if TYA is the right plan for them. Download the TRICARE Young Adult Fact Sheet to learn more about TYA eligibility, enrollment, and costs. If you have a young adult, help them take command of their health and coverage.

cases per 100,000 people and the county is an amazing 17 per 100,000 people. On base, our active case count has been very low for weeks. As you have probably noticed, restrictions are being relaxed and we are seeing the opening of the economy, including travel. Being fully vaccinated reduces host nation restrictions even more. To date, Ramstein has administered more than 24,000 doses of vaccine. We continue to have appointments go unfilled every day. For Americans (adults), there are walk-in hours every weekday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Because we rely on host nation medics to help

vaccinate local nationals and partner nation forces, we are unable to offer walk-in services for these groups. As the demand for shots is decreasing greatly, we are planning to start drawing down the shot line operations in the near future. As we watch the pandemic continuing to unfold, I am following what is happening in the UK very closely. The RKI has listed the UK as a “variant” country (directing quarantine regardless of status). The UK has seen a resurgence in their cases due to the “Delta” variant. This is the variant first seen in India. The spread of this variant is primarily in the unvaccinated

population. As far as we can tell, being fully vaccinated seems to be protective against this variant, with slightly less protection if vaccinated with only one shot. The UK case counts are up about 20%, primarily in the unvaccinated population. On the non-COVID front, we are preparing for the grand opening of the satellite pharmacy in early August! Located in the KMCC, this pharmacy will be available to all of our beneficiaries and will be the primary location for refills for both LRMC as well as Ramstein. This is a great collaboration between Army Medicine and the Air Force Medical Service. It is an example of the future of the Military Health System as the Defense Health Agency continues to make military medics more collaborative. I continue to be optimistic about the end to the pandemic. We have all been in this together, but now is not the time to let down your guard. Continue to be aware of laws and regulations, both on the installation as well as in our local communities. Continue good prevention measures. Ticks in Germany by The Find-It Guide Summer time in Germany is a great time of year and everyone has “the bug” (no pun intended) to get outside and enjoy everything the parks, forests and open-air venues have to offer. Unfortunately there are nasty bugs looking to hitch a ride on you or your pet called “Zecken” (the German word for ticks) which can carry such diseases as Lyme disease, ehrlichiosis, Rocky Mountain spotted fever and viral diseases. If you have heard that ticks drop on you from trees, it is an old wives tale. They don’t drop or jump but actually happen to catch on to your clothes by accident. Since they feed on animals, the fact that they end up on you is only by chance. They are attracted to a difference in CO2 levels and temperature shifts. Tick saliva contains an anaes-

thetic, which means a bite may go unnoticed. Ticks will wander around on your body for hours looking for a place to feed, so you should constantly keep an eye out for ticks after you have come inside from the outdoors. They tend to like places like your scalp, groin, underarms and behind the knees. Ticks are out as late as August (and sometimes later), so it is never too late to prevent infection from a tick bite. If you are trying to identify a bite, a characteristic bull’s-eye skin rash occurs in 80 percent of people. The easiest way to prevent tick bites is to avoid wooded areas, leaf litter, high grass, weeds and brush. If you can’t avoid these places because you love the outdoors, we have put together some helpful tips that may help you defend against exposure. • Use a repellent containing 20%30% DEET or 20% Picaridin. Re-apply according to manufac-

• • •

turer’s directions. (As with anything you apply to your skin, you should consult your doctor). Clothing that is lighter in color will help identify ticks when they jump on to you. Long sleeves and pants are recommended. Tuck your pants into socks. (Although this isn’t fashion forward, it is safer!) Apply repellent to your clothing as well. Stay on the trail when you are in the woods. Venturing off into grassy areas and dead leaves increases exposure as this is where ticks love to live. Don’t sit on the bare ground. Use a blanket or covering. Do a tick check before, during and after activities outside (this includes Fido). Apply sunscreen first followed by the repellent (preferably 20 minutes later).

U.S. Air Force Chief Master Sgt. Brion Blais, U.S. Air Forces in Europe-Air Forces Africa command chief, speaks with Botswana Defence Force Air Arm - MCSM Seboloko Mosimanyana, about enlisted professional development during a bilateral senior leader engagement video teleconference, May 26, at Ramstein Air Base. Multiple SELs participated in the teleconferences, to include participants from the Rwandan and Botswana defence forces and the Lithuanian and Senegalese air forces.

Story and photo by Tech. Sgt. Michael Battles U.S. Air Forces in Europe-Air Forces Africa Public Affairs Open communication is key to the success of any working relationship; however, due to COVID-19, the ability to travel and meet face-to-face has become limited, making leaders rely on communication through video teleconference capabilities. Ensuring the U.S. Air Force keeps the lines of communication open with its allies and African partners, Chief Master Sgt. Brion Blais, U.S. Air Forces in Europe-Air Forces Africa command chief, held four VTCs, May 26 and June 2, to discuss leadership, enlisted development and upcoming air symposiums with senior enlisted leaders (SEL) from their respective countries. “Our partners are vital to the overall success of the U.S. Air Forces in Europe-Air Forces Africa mission and bring an outside perspective and expertise to enhance our capabilities,” said Blais. “Having senior enlisted leader discussions with these nations strengthens our support of each other and further develops our nation’s existing partnerships.” Multiple SELs participated in the teleconferences, to include participants from the Rwandan and Botswana defence forces and the Lithuanian and Senegalese air forces. According to U.S. Air Force Senior Master Sgt. Donald Lackey Jr., USAFEAFAFRICA international enlisted engagement manager, these nations were chosen for an engagement because each one has expressed interest in U.S. Air Force professional military education (PME). “The air forces in Rwanda,

Botswana, and Senegal are interested in developing their [non-commissioned officer] corps,” he said. “Each air force is at different stages of NCO development. The Lithuanian Air Force command SEL has attended the Air Force Senior NCO Academy and is a staunch supporter of USAF PME.” He also stated that these engagements are useful to discuss obstacles each country faces with COVID-19 and force development. “Each nation’s air force has a different set of challenges that we can possibly help them overcome and best practices that we can learn from to enhance our capabilities,” Lackey said. “COVID-19 has reduced our ability to have in-person engagements, but it has introduced a virtual option that we can exploit until we return to our preCOVID 19 method of executing bilateral and multilateral engagements.” He went on to explain that he hopes these engagements will build

a framework with SELs from each country that will ultimately build a solid rapport. “The command has had a longstanding relationship with the Lithuanian Air Force and using a virtual platform is an excellent means to keep the lines of communication warm,” Lackey said. “Botswana, Senegal, and Rwanda air force’s relationships are still developing and although we have engaged with them before through in-person events it is vital in building partnerships to continue to stay connected.” The overall goal, he said, is to establish an open dialogue between our allies and partners. “I hope the SELs gain a rapport that allows them to speak comfortably,” he said. “Once the rapport is established the dialogue truly opens up and we can start to learn more about the successes or challenges their air forces face.”

NSDAR honors local Seniors for good citizenship

Alexander Adams, Ansbach High School

by Teresa Spatt National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Palatinate Chapter The Palatinate Chapter of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution are pleased to recognize four military connected seniors from DODEA high schools in Germany with the prestigious Good Citizens Award. These students have consistently demonstrated the qualities of dependability, service, leadership, and patriotism to an outstanding degree. The recipients from the graduating classes of 2021 are: Alexander Adams of Ansbach High School, Seth Kindberg of Baumholder Middle High School, Payton Anthony Long of Ramstein High School, and Angelina “Mikey” Stamper of Kaiserslautern High School. Each of these young people have demonstrated commendable leadership and volunteerism in their schools and communities while

also maintaining rigorous academic schedules. Alexander Adams possesses a competitive spirit both on the sports field and in the robotics lab. Earning a varsity letter in soccer, basketball, cross country, and baseball, Adams set an Ansbach school record for the 5K run. As a new enrollee at Ansbach High School his junior year, Adams immediately became an integral part of the Robotics Team leading them to a first place finish at the First TECH Challenge competition for DODEA Schools for two consecutive years. This year he was the lead programmer and project manager. Adams plans to continue in this career path, stating, “I am motivated to create influential algorithms that follow ethical standards to ensure a safe and secure future for generations to come.” Adams has also served his community through volunteer work at the base thrift store, but says his most meaningful volunteer experience was through a school club, Best Buddies, which organized parties for students with special needs and their families. “Volunteering wasn’t an obligation, it was a pleasure. As the club gained popularity, our support grew, creating a flourishing club and a strong support system for the students and their families,” recalls Adams. According to teacher Daren Schuettpelz, “Alex displays an uncommonly high amount of empathy for others and often participates in groups and organizations that help others, especially those less fortunate or with disabilities, for no gain to himself.” In addition to being selected as the school level winner for the Good Citizens Award, Adams was also selected by the Palatinate

“Mikey” Stamper, Kaiserslautern High School

Chapter of the NSDAR as the Chapter Level winner and the Units Overseas State Level Winner. Seth Kindberg has served the Baumholder community to such an extent that he was recognized as the Youth Volunteer of the Year for 2019. Through clubs like Keystone, EdRising, and National Honor Society (NHS) and organizations including the Baumholder Community Spouses Club and his church, Kindberg has planned, executed, organized, and participated in countless volunteer events and projects that benefit his community. Kindberg’s senior year service project for NHS was to clean the playgrounds and walkways in the on-base military housing area monthly. Also active in sports, he was a member of the soccer team and captain of the cross country team. According to teacher Stacie Brough, “Although Seth has an impressive list of personal accomplishments, he does not boast or brag. His genuine kindness and humility has led to both students and faculty viewing Seth with the highest regard.” In the future, Kindberg hopes to become an Environmental Science and Engineering Officer in the US Army. According to Kindberg, “Being a military child has been a blessing in that it taught me to be patriotic. Not to accept my country as it is, but to accept it as it could be. Patriotism is loving one’s country enough to support its evolution, support those who fight to preserve it, and remember those who died to build it.” Payton Long is best characterized by his endless enthusiasm. Heavily involved in his church youth ministry and also volunteering at the base gym, Payton describes how, “these service efforts have had a great impact

Seth Kindberg, Baumholder Middle High School

on my life as I can see first hand how these opportunities can uplift the community and inspire others to do good deeds as well. By helping uplift the community, it creates a shockwave of positivity throughout the surrounding area; and when others emulate the good deeds, it helps strengthen the relationship of the community as a whole.” At school, Long also volunteers as a writing tutor at the Ramstein High School Writing Center. Sponsor Heidi Kretz states that although Long is an intelligent writer, “what was more compelling to me was his kindness. These qualities make him an ideal writing tutor, guiding peers through a collaborative approach to improving their own writing.” In addition to his volunteer work, Long has been the captain of the European Games and soccer teams and a member of the football and track teams. He was also very actively involved in the marching band, Jazz, and Symphonic Bands and was first chair baritone of the Wind Symphony. He is a member of the NHS, Math Honor Society, Spanish Club president and recipient of the American Legion Academic Medal. Long plans to study international business relations and linguistics and pursue a career in the US Navy. Angelina “Mikey” Stamper is very passionate about helping others and advocating for mental health. Stamper was the president of a Big Buddies Club for four years, pairing elementary age students who have difficulty expressing themselves with high school buddies. This organization helps provide a sense of stability to students with adjustment issues from frequent moves and paren-

SCHWETZINGEN from Page 1 treat, as well: the town offers worldrenowned music festivals, including one scheduled for this fall. Upon approach, Schwetzingen seems very much like many other small German cities. It offers half-timbered buildings, a town square and an overall sense of impeccable neatness and cleanliness. It does have something quite unique, however: an amazing palace, complete with castle and gardens. And, as travelers get closer to the palace, they might notice a distinct difference in the state and stature of this former cultural and political seat for Palatine princes. The castle The Schloss (castle) dates back to 1350 when it was a small moated castle and hunting lodge. In the 1700’s, Prince Elector Johann Wilhelm commissioned work to be done to increase the palace space and gardens. Another highlight of this castle is the theater. Of special note, the Rococo Theater is an ornate and majestic entertainment venue in the north wing of the palace. It was also was the first theater in Europe to include galleries. There is a wealth of information available on the castle’s website. For a great outdoor experience, most visitors can easily manage to fill a full-day trip of seeing the never-ending gardens (€7/ adults or €17.50 for a family ticket). Beautiful gardens The magnificent gardens of Schwetzingen immediately take your breath away. Visitors are often impressed – and sometimes overwhelmed – with the attention to detail in the many gardens of this estate. When you go, take a good pair of shoes: the grounds are extensive. It took us a little over two hours to finish most of them. Our first stop was in the garden museum, which introduced us to the many phases of expansion of the gardens over the years. A great deal of restoration began around the 1970’s and continues today to maintain the integrity and authenticity of each garden’s intent. As we walked the gardens, we could definitely see the difference between the influences of the time, style and design. Those who love to garden (and even those who don’t) might be able see the strict, linear lines of early 18th century French gardens. It’s also fun to turn a

corner and then be pleasantly surprised by the free-spirit English features intertwined into the design. Statues Schwetzingen Gardens offer a veritable treasure trove of sculptures. Though many are classic in design and intent, you’ll be surprised and delighted by how and where they are placed throughout the outdoor visiting areas. There are also a number of wonderful buildings to find, view and explore. These include a mosque in the Turkish garden, a Roman aqueduct, and Roman baths. All together, these help contribute to an overall sense of being transported to a different time and place. Music festivals Today, Schwetzingen is famous for hosting excellent annual music festivals. Most notably, the Schwetzingen community embraces and celebrates the classics. Though COVID restrictions put a damper on anything happening during most of the last year, this autumn promises to be a good time. The SWR Schwetzingen Festival is planned for October 15-31, 2021, and offers a full slate of excellent musical choices. More information can be found at https:// www.swr.de/swrclassic/schwetzingerfestspiele Certainly, as the world (and the country) gets back into the swing of things, the tradition of musical festivals in Schwetzingen will continue. Neighboring cities One of the best discoveries of Schwetzingen is its proximity to both of the beautiful cities of Mannheim and Heidelberg. Traveling to Schwetzingen is definitely worth a day trip. But by making a weekend of it, you would be seeing the best this area has to offer.
