Air Force releases updated fitness test score breakdown Secretary of the Air Force Public Affairs The Air Force will resume physical fitness testing July 1 with only three components: push-ups, sit-ups and the 1.5-mile run. Without the waist measurement as a scored component, push-ups and sit-ups will increase from 10 to 20 points each, while the 1.5-mile run will remain at 60 points. Scoring will fall into five-year age groups, as opposed to the previous 10. Updated charts can be found at https://www.afpc.af.mil/Portals/70/ documents/07_FITNESS/5%20 Year%20Score%20Chart%20updated%201.5%20mile%20pushups%20 and%20situps%2020210525.pdf? ver=pPTBzu2XxX83JsIWgzfzOg% 3d%3d.

The waist measurement will no longer be required as part of the physical fitness test but a separate assessment of body composition, as required by DOD Instruction 1308.3, will continue starting in October. Testing for body composition may continue to use some form of

COMMENTARY: On an island, leading adaptive Airmen…Ready to execute by Lt. Col. Frank Laras 65th Air Base Squadron commander

“Leadership is not about titles, positions or flow charts. It is about one life influencing another.” — John C. Maxwell

My leadership philosophy wasn’t developed overnight; it is rooted in my parent’s investment in my childhood, sharing in my father’s 30 years of service to the Air Force, nurtured with my own life experiences and mentored by a handful of fine general officers. My childhood bestowed upon me the ability to adapt and overcome. As a child I lived in seven different states, three different countries, changed schools five separate times...if I didn’t learn flexibility, or the need to be dependable as a military son, I don’t know what environment would have better prepared me. I grew up playing team sports, soccer and baseball mostly, where the team would only thrive if the individual collective efforts supported one another and a common goal. The opportunities I have had in my life, coupled with my amazing wife Libby and daughter Sophie, helped make me the man I am today, and I’ll forever be grateful for them all. Throughout life, one of the questions I often ask myself is, “What does it take to make a difference in the lives of others?” In my opinion, time and compassion are the answer, which requires patience and the willingness to be vulnerable. Take action, lead by example. A leader possesses the moral, legal, and professional responsibility for the Airmen in their charge. As a leader your personality, your priorities, and your

passions will echo through the Airmen you serve with and for, provided you take the time to invest in them. Leadership is about mentoring tomorrow’s leaders through today’s challenges and never missing the opportunity to recognize their hard work. Inspiring leadership motivates others to discover the best version of themselves, to influence by aligning personal and professional goals that connect to the mission, and paving a path unique to that Airman. Effective leadership requires the willingness to be ultimately responsible for everything that leads to the group’s success or failure. It begins with self-reflection, and the moment a leader explains a failure by making an excuse or pointing their finger elsewhere, they abdicate from their position. A leader must maintain the willingness and discipline to conduct honest, realistic assessments of their own performance and that of their team.

Our squadron priorities: Airmen Development, Mission Readiness and Bilateral Partnerships, were developed as a team last summer. When we saw the wing’s lines of effort roll out earlier this year, it reaffirmed our understanding of mission and vision. Leadership is about people, and relationships matter. I firmly believe if you care for the Airmen, our greatest resource, and their families they will take care of the mission. The caring portion starts with building a culture of dignity and respect. That culture expands to include an understanding of both personal and professional readiness life-balance, “i.e., what’s their story?” Sitting down with each member within your unit builds rapport and allows you to better support the pillars that make up their foundation. Airmen who are cared for and believed in bring the creativity, motivation, and passion needed to succeed. From that, together we educate, train, study,

and exercise as an organization to create the muscle memory needed when called upon to generate, protect, sustain, and project airpower 24/7. When readiness is the focus, mission execution becomes a natural occurrence. COVID-19 changed the work environment in which we operate, but the mission of maintaining U.S. options for the projection of airpower into any corner of the globe remained the same. Aligning people’s orientation was absolutely critical because this threat is all about people. Active duty, dependents, and civilian employees, along with host nation partners, view the challenges through very different lenses. In order to overcome hard decisions and navigate the waters surrounding this pandemic, open and honest communication at every level from the Wing down through the flight sections was mandatory. Good leadership creates understanding through inclusion, and buy-in by

encouraging opinions, questions, and suggestions from everyone, no matter their position, and by resisting the urge to domineer and discourage discussion or dissent. In recognition, the Centurions of the 65th Air Base Squadron deliver on their oath everyday through innovative means of accomplishing the mission with collaborative bilateral partnership efforts at the Department of Defense’s mid-Atlantic strategic airfield. Centurions have become medical screeners, security forces augmentees, and trained logisticians to download/upload cargo for transient aircrew in order to keep the mission moving. The Centurions executed mission support for multiple Secretary of Defense and European Command initiatives, including anti-submarine warfare, bomber task force integration, Coronet movements and foreign military sales. They led the reactivation of Lajes Field’s “Bullrun” tactical landing zone. In direct support to the Portuguese air force’s number one priority mission of search and rescue throughout the nine islands of the Azores, the team expanded air traffic radar coverage 26% between two control facilities, reworked standby defueling support and refined high wind refueling safety procedures for helicopters responding to distressed vessels at sea. Twenty-five different functional backgrounds merged into one entity to work alongside our fellow squadrons at Lajes to provide power projection capabilities delivering iron to Combatant Commanders in three areas of responsibility. This didn’t happen by chance; dedication to the mission beats throughout every Centurion. Over the past ten months, Centurions have been recognized with 14 wing-level and five major command level-awards. None of this would have been possible without the hearts and minds of the Airmen who stand ready to execute.

FITNESS TEST from Page 1 having them available in January 2022. Members will have a choice of which testing options they choose for their physical fitness assessment components. The six-month timeline will help ensure fitness assessment cells are prepared to train physical training leaders to administer tests using the new options. “We are moving away from a one-size-fits-all model,” said Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. CQ Brown, Jr. “More testing options will put flexibility in the hands of our Airmen – where it belongs. We know not all Airmen maintain their fitness the same way and may excel in different areas. Alternate components provide choices while still providing a mechanism to determine overall fitness.” These changes align under the Air Force’s Action Order Airmen, peoplefirst approach. “Physical fitness is an important part of our everyday lives, it’s more than just a test – it’s a way of life, our readiness and ultimately our future success,” said Chief Master Sgt. of the Air Force JoAnne S. Bass. “July 1st is a chance to refocus on building a lifestyle of fitness and health, and I know our Airmen will be ready.”

NODAL Lightning 21-1: Honing wing effectiveness

U.S. Airmen from the 724th Air Mobility Squadron unload cargo during a Nodal Lightning exercise at Aviano Air Base, Italy, May 18. The exercise started with a simulated air attack followed by other attacks and injuries to teammates.

by Senior Airman Taylor Slater 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs The 521st Air Mobility Operations Wing conducted its first Nodal Lightning exercise of 2021 at Ramstein AB and geographically separated units across the European theater from May 17-20. “We integrate all our units through live, virtual and constructed events, taking into consideration the dynamics of each unit’s unique location,” said Senior Master Sgt. Jennifer Barger, 521st AMOW Inspector General superintendent. “The result is a tailored exercise script to maximize the most from each exercise at each location.” Nodal Lightning 21-1 is focused on assessing the effectiveness of the wing to operate in a contested environment and honing their skills through scenarios such as simulated air attacks, chemical attacks and unit operations in adverse conditions. “For (Air Mobility Command) we do our wartime mission every day,” said Lt. Col. Bradley Powers, 521st AMOW Inspector General director of exercises and inspections. “What’s different about an

exercise is that we kick it up a notch. We say, ‘Now do this when you have to respond to simulated attacks.’ ‘Do this when your communications are degraded.’ We provide that extra stress through realistically representing what would happen in wartime.” New strategies implemented through Nodal Lightning 21-1 are Agile Combat Employment concepts such as operations in remote environments. For example, wing Airmen can be universally taught to recognize deficiencies in aircraft or hardware that would normally be a skill solely held by people of that career field. “This is all to prepare for the ever changing and sometimes unpredictable future environment of air mobility,” Barger said. Much like Nodal Lightning 20-2 in October 2020, COVID-19 procedures and adjusting to varying host nation guidances factored into the wing’s plans for the exercise. Barger said planners were able to navigate these challenging circumstances by dividing units into designated teams, preventing them from being in close contact with other units and allowing for easy contact tracing.

“It’s the hard work of our exercise planners, who take those guidances and tailor their scenarios to each unit, that deserve the credit for making this happen,” Barger said. According to Powers, the increase in real-world activity since October 2020 added another layer of challenge for the wing during the exercise. “This (exercise) was a better test because we also had a lot of realworld work the units were trying to do,” Powers said. “Then I complicate their environment and bring those opportunities to demonstrate their ability to operate and accomplish the mission in a full spectrum readiness environment.” Nodal Lightning exercises are just another way the 521st AMOW continues to grow and adapt with an ever-changing landscape. “The Air Force I joined 20 years ago is not the same as it is today, and that evolution will not stop,” Barger said. “This exercise also gives newer Airmen that may not have experience in a readiness exercise a chance to test their resilience and agility.” The 521st AMOW plans to host Nodal Lightning 21-2 in the fall.

On and off-duty Airman 1st Class Kiera Christensen portrays Air Force values. On May 25, 86th Airlift Wing leadership recognized her efforts, naming her Airlifter of the Week. It is the 86th Medical Support Squadron patient movement technician’s heart and attention to detail that has earned her a position not usually filled by someone of her rank. She is one of two Airmen who manage the Air Force’s second-largest Patient Movement Operations mission. As a PMT, if a patient cannot find care in Germany, the case is routed up to the chief of medical staff. The place where the best care is provided is then located, and the PMT makes sure the person has orders, per diem, a place to stay, and anything else that may be needed. She streamlined care for patients and non-medical attendants and medical evacuations. Christensen also supported a mental health patient transfer process improvement by collaborating with three organizations, consolidating administrative work, which decreased processing time by one week.

care of her fellow Airmen. As the Kaiserslautern Military Community 4A/MSC president, she plans special events for medical personnel. During October,

June 4, 2021 events are planned to span a week. Due to challenges from the COVID-19 pandemic, some events like the big paintball game had to be canceled this year. “I like how the Air Force is focused on morale because out in the civilian world you don’t really find that,” said Christensen. “That’s something special about the Air Force; they care about their people. I love boosting the morale of people in my Air Force Specialty Code and I’m so motivated by that.” Christensen was initially a frequent volunteer at the Ramstein Elementary School. Then, she decided to run for the parent-teacher secretary position to be more involved in planning events for the children. She also volunteers with a local orphanage in Landstuhl. “My side passion is a local orphanage that’s close to my heart,” said Christensen. “To see those kids’ faces even though I can’t understand what they’re saying, but I know the excitement in their body language.” During the Christmas holiday season, Christensen organized a base-wide toy drive for the children. The toy drive received so much support that the children were gifted bikes, Nintendo Switches, XBoxes and other things. One of Ramstein’s lines of effort is to Develop Airmen and Care for Families; with all the volunteering and work Christensen does, she exemplifies that.

Allied Sky was conducted in two parts: • European Leg: B-52 Stratofortress bomber aircraft currently deployed to Morón Air Base Spain, flew over all NATO nations in Europe. During the mission, the bombers completed aerial refueling and integrated with several ally aircraft. • North American Leg: The stateside-based aircraft integrated with aircraft from the U.S. and

Swift Response 21: 435 CRG opens airfield on demand

A U.S. Air Force C-17 Globemaster III aircraft assigned to the 437th Airlift Wing, Joint Base Charleston, South Carolina, drops Air Force and U.S. Army paratroopers onto Cheshnegirovo Airfield, Bulgaria, during exercise Swift Response 21, May 11. Rapid airfield security, assessment and performance of initial airfield operations enabled joint delivery of troops and heavy equipment cargo in a simulated contested environment.

Story and photos by Senior Airman John R. Wright 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs CHESHNEGIROVO AIRFIELD, Bulgaria — The 435th Contingency Response Group executed the opening and operating of an airfield after joint forcible entry into Cheshnegirovo Airfield, Bulgaria, during exercise Swift Response 21, May 11-12. Under cover of darkness, U.S. Air Force Airmen and U.S. Army Soldiers boarded a C-17 Globemaster III aircraft departing Pápa Air Base, Hungary, destined for uncertain terrain.

Upon arrival, the first light of daybreak revealed a remote airfield surrounded by mountains and overgrown vegetation. Rapid airfield security and assessment were conducted by the 435th CRG team, and, after establishing initial airfield operations in a simulated contested environment, the joint delivery of troops and heavy equipment cargo was enabled. “The 435th CRG contributed a selfsufficient team capable of establishing and sustaining airfield operations with minimal resources,” said Tech. Sgt. Paris Bell, 435th Contingency Response Squadron airfield manager. “We have

everything we need to support airlift missions in a contingency environment.” Attached to the 435th Air Ground Operations Wing located at Ramstein Air Base, the 435th CRG is the only contingency response force in the Air Force that maintains an airborne insertion capability. “The airborne capability of the assessment team and the first-in security team provides a wide range of options for commanders, from the combatant command down to group or brigade level, to employ the critical skill sets that the two teams bring to the fight,” said Capt. Andrew Schnell, 435th CRS assistant director of

operations. “The capability also allows us to fully integrate with the (Army) 173rd Airborne Brigade, allowing a seamless transition between securing the airfield and accepting follow-on forces via airland aircraft.” With its highly skilled, multi-capable Airmen, the 435th CRG enabled rapid C-17 Globemaster III and C-130 Hercules aircraft launch, recovery, airdrop and airland operations within a strict time frame. “Contingency response Airmen are the epitome of the multi-capable Airman concept,” Bell said. “In order to achieve mission success, it is essential for Airmen within the CRG to be both subject matter

Versatility is not a new concept to the CRG – contingency response personnel are the original multi-capable Airmen.” As part of DEFENDER-Europe, an annual large-scale U.S. Army Europe and Africa-led, multinational, joint exercise, Swift Response is one of several associated exercises designed to build strategic and operational readiness and interoperability between U.S., NATO allies and partners. “The opportunity to work with the 173rd (Airborne Brigade) and our NATO allies and partners is always something

I am grateful for,” Schnell said. “Strong relationships with both the joint force and our NATO allies, and partners is critical to the security of the European theater and a key aspect of deterrence.” Swift Response 21 is an opportunity for the 435th CRG to sharpen its expeditionary skills and demonstrate its ability to stand up core air mobility support functions and additional combat support functions that enable self-sustained airfield operations in austere locations during a rapidly developing crisis. “An airfield assessment supporting a joint forcible entry is a PhD-level assessment, requiring extensive coordination

between contingency response forces and the 173rd Airborne Brigade,” Schnell said. “From planning through execution, the team worked closely with their Army counterparts, ensuring a smooth transition of authority following the seizure. The team performed incredibly well in an extremely complicated environment, and I am proud of every member.” Whether it be for exercises in peacetime or supplying forces in crisis, the U.S. military’s ability to conduct military movement across borders in Europe is key to the readiness of NATO allies and partners. Exercises like Swift Response 21 enhance alliance security by maintaining

NATO’s broad range of military capabilities to deter aggression and assure allies of NATO’s readiness to respond. “Swift Response was an overall resounding success from both a joint and partner nation integration perspective,” said Col. Jason Work, 435th CRG commander. “The exercise allowed us to increase the readiness of Army and Air Force units, as well as increase interoperability with our partners in Hungary and Bulgaria. Swift Response is a critical piece of the DEFENDER-Europe exercise series designed to support NATO deterrence objectives, and the 435th CRG was honored to participate.”

Story and photos by Airman 1st Class Manuel Zamora 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs MIHAI KOGALNICEANU AIR BASE, ROMANIA — Swift Response is part of a U.S Army-led exercise known as DEFENDEREurope 21 which involves more than 7,000 troops and 12 countries. The exercise is designed to build interoperability among U.S. and NATO allies. This year’s portion in Romania was NATO-led by the Royal Netherlands air force, May 8-14. “We are working hand in hand, shoulder to shoulder with the Dutch, Germans, Romanians

and the Polish. Dropping troops in a single formation at the same time,” said Capt. William Cox, 37th Airlift Squadron mission commander. The 86th Airlift Wing provided two C-130J Super Hercules aircraft to enable paratroopers with the U.S. Army 82nd Airborne Division, Polish 6th Airborne Brigade, Dutch 11th Air Assault Brigade, and Romanian Troopers to land in Bobac airfield. These strategic jumps are known as Joint Forcible Entries and the exercise as a whole is a demonstration to deter aggression. “Due to COVID-19, each NATO partner had different rules to follow to participate and we had to

navigate all of the rules to mitigate risks while operating in a coalition,” said Capt. Derek Hale 37th Airlift Squadron deputy airlift mission commander. Despite COVID-19, the U.S Air Force and NATO allies were able to demonstrate multiple airdrops as well as mobilization of antitank light weight vehicles and personnel. Swift Response 2021 was different from prior exercises because it was NATO-led by the Royal Netherlands air force, allowing the U.S. to demonstrate its commitment to NATO allies. “That says a lot about their capabilities and our capabilities to be a supportive ally,” said Maj. Andy Forsyth, 37th Airlift Squadron mission commander. “I’d like to say thanks to all the NATO allies we got to plan and fly with. It was awesome to see the Royal Netherlands air force take the lead on this one and I’m glad they invited us to play.” KAISERSLAUTERN

Mission success at Stolen Cerberus VIII

A 37th Airlift Squadron C-130J Super Hercules aircraft sits on a ramp during Operation Stolen Cerberus VIII at Elefsis Air Base, Greece, May 18. Operation Stolen Cerberus is a two-week exercise aimed at providing Hellenic armed forces and U.S. military members the opportunity to standardize their efforts in a bilateral training environment.

Story and photo by Senior Airman Andrew Alvarado 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Operation Stolen Cerberus VIII, a bilateral training event between Hellenic armed forces and U.S. military members, concluded on May 23. The successful two-week training featured multiple events, including low-level defensive flying maneuvers, cargo air-drops, combat offloads for cargo pallets, attempted midflight interception simulations and emergency medical evacuations. “Through this exercise, we demonstrate to our allies that we are here for them,” said Maj. Jonathan Klenk, 37th Airlift Squadron Stolen Cerberus VIII detachment commander, “We’re here to train with them, learn from them and to teach them, so that we can all become better. We can all become stronger when

we’re unified.” The training scenarios often included the 31st Search and Rescue Squadron, a unit from the Hellenic air force who participated alongside the 57th Rescue Squadron from Aviano Air Base, Italy, and the 435th Contingency Response Group from Ramstein Air Base. Through a series of multiple integration opportunities, a shared commitment to building cohesion between European allies and expanding partner capacity was achieved. Adjusting despite COVID-19 required precautionary measures such as the wearing of masks and tests conducted at various intervals. “By continuing these operations through COVID-19, we show that we can operate in any situation,'' said Capt. Samuel Mckinley, 37th Airlift Squadron central scheduler and Stolen Cerberus VIII mission planning cell chief. “We show our ability

to be agile in any situation and continue those combat training operations.” Each day, personnel from the 37th AS manned three C130J Super Hercules aircraft from Ramstein for rapid deployment and varied mission sets. Additionally, the 86th Maintenance Squadron consistently handled a variety of duties including inspection requirements, configurations monitoring, and refueling operations to ensure the aircraft were in working order. Despite the heavy task load, Airmen from Ramstein found significant value in continuous mission success. One Airman shared advice for anyone considering next year’s opportunity to participate. “Be ready to work hard, but Greece is beautiful,” said Airman 1st Class Anthony DeLanceyWinters, 86th MXS crew chief. “I would do it again in a heartbeat.”

Results from the most recent Army Family Housing Tenant Satisfaction Survey show the Baumholder Military Community logged a record-breaking 38.5% participation rate, the highest participation for garrisons in Europe, and among the highest in the Army. According to Housing Office leaders, this year’s participation rate can be attributed to the dedication of volunteers, who went the extra mile to collect responses. “We have always had great support and engagement from the garrison command team, but this year the two driving factors of our increased participation were the phone calls made to residents and our weekly door-to-door flyers,” said Charm Sutton, Housing Office chief of customer service. “This ensured we remained in constant contact with our residents.” In addition to the highest participation in U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz history, the tenant survey revealed a 2% increase in overall satisfaction. According to garrison leadership, though the increase in satisfaction is small, it is a step in the right direction. “We are encouraged by the increased participation rate in the tenant survey, and by the increase in overall satisfaction, but we remain committed to providing the highest quality possible for our Soldiers and their families,” said USAG RP Commander Col. Vance Klosinski. “We are reminded that we still have much room for improvement

in our housing services, and these survey results will help shape the future of our housing emphasis.” The survey, which was conducted by CEL & Associates Inc., an independent, third-party organization funded by the Department of Defense, also offered a snapshot of how families feel now, and how upcoming changes can impact the quality of life for Soldiers and their families. Directorate of Public Works leaders note one of the biggest complaints received is the age and under-size of the homes available. These issues were not addressed for five years, from 2009-2014, due to the Army’s decision to close the installation. Since the Army ultimately decided to keep Baumholder open and merge the BMC with USAG RP, the funding and work to completely renovate facilities is moving at top speed. “The garrison is tracking $3 billion worth of infrastructure programs for major improvements over the next few years, not only for housing in the BMC, but also for everyone working and living in our USAG RP community,” said George B. Brown, DPW operations chief. DPW Director Greg Williams adds that of the $3 billion allocated for improvements, $344.5 million will be specifically for Army Family Housing projects in Baumholder. Some of the changes residents can expect to see in the future include: rolladens and balconies (a project started summer 2020), garages, and right-sized apartments. Williams also notes that DPW staff is working on action plans detailing ways the directorate will

improve areas which received low scores. In reviewing the survey results, the Housing team also found that a big percentage of negative feedback was regarding the levels of service and types of service provided to residents. “Unfortunately, many of the frustrations with service can be attributed to COVID mitigations,” said Sutton. “Our team is working to create action plans to move forward and provide transparency into how business is conducted.” Housing Director Harald Kastner also notes the Housing office will focus on accountability for projects and services at all levels, and getting back to customer service basics. Both the Housing Office and DPW agree that some of the frustrations in housing and maintenance services can be solved by using ArMA, the Army’s new maintenance application. Housing and barracks residents can submit and track service orders from inception to completion with ArMA, and communicate directly with DPW. Sutton adds that the survey continues to provide invaluable data from BMC residents. The results of these surveys will continue to be used by the Housing team, and other installation leaders, to refine action plans to address deficiencies and prioritize resources. “Our responsibility is to provide our residents the best options we have available, be honest, and take care of their needs,” said Sutton. “Our goal is to continue to support residents while they are in this community, and do so to the best of our ability.”

by Eleanor Prohaska 21st Theater Sustainment Command The morning of May 12, Spc. Clint Kindlesparker woke up about 5,000 miles away from where he grew up in Garretsville, Ohio. His job demanded it. Kindlesparker, a U.S. Army Parachute Rigger with the 5th Quartermaster Theater Aerial Deliver Company, 16th Special Troops Battalion, 16th Sustainment Brigade, was participating in Swift Response 21 — a DEFENDER-Europe 21-linked exercise. It is one of the premier military crisis response training events for multinational airborne forces in the world. During the May 12 exercise, the 143rd Airlift Wing airdropped supply pallets and equipment from C130 and C17 aircraft at Kenyeri Airfield, Hungary. The exercise demonstrated U.S. and Allied capability to set the

theater and enable the rapid build of combat power. “As an aerial delivery specialist I help rig up the loads and make sure they are good to go and everything is done correctly,” said Kindlesparker. “I make sure the parachutes are good to go,” he added. Service members also jumped during the exercise. Swift Response 21 is designed to validate U.S. European Command’s ability to send high readiness forces into a designated area while advancing airborne interoperability among NATO allies. This year, multinational participation in Swift Response 21 involves more than 7,000 troops from 11 countries. Kindlesparker, who enlisted in the Army with his family’s full support in 2019, is pleased to be among them. “I love being able to travel,” he said. “Getting to see different places. Being able to do things I never thought I would. For instance, I’m

over here in Europe right now and two years ago I never would have guessed I would be here. I’m glad I made the choice to join.” Kindlesparker looks forward to working with service members from other countries, building understanding and relationships with Allies and Partners. “I think it’s going to be a great experience and I can’t wait,” he said. He and other Service Members will have opportunities during DEFENDER-Europe 21, taking place through June. The large-scale U.S. Army-led exercise is designed to build readiness and interoperability between the U.S., NATO allies and partner militaries. This year, more than 28,000 multinational forces from 26 nations will conduct nearly simultaneous operations across more than 30 training areas in more than a dozen countries.

RAF Typhoons on NATO air policing mission support US, Italian JTAC exercise in Romania by Allied Air Command Public Affairs Office, with inputs from Royal Air Force Public Affairs Joint Terminal Attack Controllers ( JTAC) from the US Air Force and the Italian army conducted an exercise with RAF Typhoons operating out of Mihail Kogalniceanu Air Base in Romania, May 20. Two RAF Typhoons from 121 Expeditionary Air Wing, based out of Mihail Kogalniceanu Air Base, near Constanta in Romania, carried out a Close Air Support training mission with NATO JTAC teams from the US Air Force and the Italian Army.

“Working with

personnel from other nations gives me more of a worldwide perspective and helps build relations for future events”

Technical Sergeant Sean Palmer, a JTAC from the US Air Force who led the exercise, said: “Working with live aircraft allows me to experience being a part of the Close Air Support team. While simulators can be fantastic training, no one can replicate a pilot flying better than an actual pilot. Working with personnel from other nations gives me more of a worldwide perspective and helps build relations for future events. It also allows me to see the differences in techniques that other nations use, helping to improve our combined work flow during training and missions.” JTACs are qualified military personnel who direct the action of combat aircraft engaged in Close Air Support and other offensive air operations from a forward position. It is their responsibility to speak direct to the pilots in the cockpit and to guide them to their targets on the ground.

They also test service members prior to deployment or training in order to determine the prevalence and infection rates of troops. “With the surveillance testing program, we ensure critical missions can be performed, such as personnel deploying or going into a training environment,” said Nina Gruhn, a

senior microbiologist and program manager at Public Health Command Europe. “Our testing efforts allow service members, civilians and families to PCS (permanent change of station) without jeopardizing the health and wellbeing of others.” PHCE recently passed the 200k milestone of processed COVID-19 surveillance samples. Since May 2020, PHCE has performed COVID-19 surveillance testing for Army, Air Force and Navy personnel throughout the U.S. European Command footprint, with additional support to U.S. Forces in U.S. Central Command. “We had a steep learning curve,” added Gruhn. “Within the last year, we were able to improve work processes and significantly decrease the turnaround time of samples.” “Receiving the results of the COVID-19 samples is very time sensitive,” said Col. Jeremy Bears, laboratory director for Public Health Command Europe. “Therefore, the

Soldiers are working 24/7 to be able to achieve a turnaround time of less than 48 hours for the large volume of samples submitted to PHCE’s lab.” “The Laboratory Sciences division can process upwards of 2,000 samples per day using high throughput polymerase chain reaction methods developed by the PHCE lab,” added Bears. “Our surveillance testing team is surprisingly small, comprising less than 25 percent of our total labora-

tory staff,” said Gruhn. “Our team consists of junior enlisted Soldiers, laboratory technicians and food inspectors, who can execute each step of the entire process.” Each Soldier is fully trained in the five-step operation, which entails receiving, sorting, pooling, analyzing, and reporting the results. “PHCE was the first public health lab in the Army doing this type of testing,” said Gruhn. “To this day,

PHCE has processed more than six times the amount of COVID19 samples than other military laboratories.” PHCE’s laboratory is an ISO 17025 accredited full-service public health laboratory, that also provides biological and chemical analytical services such as testing for bacterial contamination in food and water or for heavy metals like lead and pesticides in water, air or soil.

SCENIC SPOTS from Page 1 Europe or, instead, opt to stay in a hotel nestled in the countryside with striking mountain views. Whether you are a couple, group or solo adventurer looking for outdoor adventures or quiet evenings spent strolling and sightseeing, there is certainly something for you here in these quintessential spots listed below.

1. Bad Ems, Germany Bad Ems is a small, beautiful town located in the picturesque region of Lahn Valley. While this municipality offers gorgeous views of the Lahn River and rolling green hills, it is most famous for its bathing resort, where couples can enjoy various spa treatments from different clinics! For the exploratory

2. Bamberg, Germany The town of Bamberg in Bavaria is said to be one of Germany’s greatest treasures. It is situated over seven hills that are populated with medieval churches that date back to the year 1004. Not only does this area boast an abundance of vivid and historic architecture, but it also houses modern shops and boutiques, nine breweries located throughout the

city, an amazing nightlife scene and a world-class symphony orchestra. For the duo that loves to explore old towns and architecture but also enjoys the contemporary lifestyle, this is the perfect place to visit! Plus, if you’re looking to tie the knot, hosting a destination wedding here would provide with a great number of historic churches to choose from as a unique setting!

couple, there are many outdoor activities that you can partake in that include water sports, cycling, golfing and so much more. This is the idealistic spot for lovers looking to relax and decompress in some of Europe’s oldest spas. Also, as an added bonus, Bad Ems is also home to a grandiose flower parade that takes place every year in August.

3. Neuschwanstein Castle One place in Germany that the locals believe to be “impossibly romantic” is the Neuschwanstein Castle, located on the top of a hill in a small town in Bavaria. Once used as a place of refuge for the king, it was opened to the public shortly after his death in 1886. Whether you choose to visit in the summer or wintertime, you

will be taken aback by its beauty. Not only is the castle itself breathtaking, but it also offers amazing views of the area around it. There is a path located right next to the venue that can transport you on an easy trip right into the Alps, or you can enjoy picturesque views from indoors of the surrounding hills and the Alpsee Lake situated in the valley below.

The perfect backdrop All of these places serve as the perfect backdrop to a brief but memorable weekend getaway for the two of you, or perhaps you can even renew your vows in one of these storybook locales. If you’re hoping to take your first trip down the aisle while in Germany, it is important that you learn the legal rules prior to the ceremony. Furthermore, if you plan on having your stateside friends and family attend, make sure to give them fair warning so they can book their tickets well in advance; to cut down on mailing costs, either consider having an emailed invite or, if you’re more old-fashioned, order them online and have the stationary delivered to a close loved one in the United States. To make your friend’s life easier, make sure you work with a company like Envelopes.com or David’s Bridal that will cheaply print the wedding invitations’ envelopes so your friend doesn’t have to labor away handwriting the addresses. Regardless of whether you’re looking for a romantic German destination for the “big day” or just an average Saturday, you’ll be enchanted by the dramatic natural scenery, majestic history and the intimate feeling of many of these lovely spots.
