Page 2 80TH ANNIVERSARY from Page 1 by Airman 1st Class Alexcia Givens 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Airmen from the 37th Airlift Squadron celebrated the unit’s 80th anniversary at Ramstein Air Base, May 26. The 37 AS provides airlift and airdrop capabilities to troops in U.S. European Command, Africa Command and Central Command. The celebration consisted of a formation flight with nine C-130J Super Hercules aircraft, and a jump with 80 paratroopers from U.S. Army Airborne Brigade Combat teams and the 435th Contingency Response Group. “Celebrating the 80th anniversary is important because it builds connections to the squadron, and it helps squadron members understand the historical significance,” said Maj. Kyle Gaulthier, 37 AS assistant director of operations. Over the years, the 37 AS has used a variety of cargo aircraft, the current aircraft being the C-130J Super Hercules. On Feb. 2, 1942, the 37th Transport Squadron was founded as a U.S. Army Air Corps component. The squadron, located initially at Patterson Field, Ohio, was eventually assigned to Ramstein Air Base in 1994, after many moves worldwide. The 37 AS has participated in many important missions

since its inception. In World War II, the squadron was a crucial player in the airborne assaults on Normandy, France. During Operation Homecoming in 1973, the squadron aided in the repatriation of U.S. prisoners of war from Hanoi. The squadron also conducted airlift operations throughout Operation Desert Shield/Storm in Southwest Asia. “It’s important that we pass down the history of the 37 AS because it helps us understand our heritage and take pride in our position here,” said Lt. Col. Trevor Hall, 86th Operations Group chief pilot. Today the “Blue Tail Flies” C-130J Super Hercules aircraft and crews continue to provide world class airlift and airdrop capabilities anytime, anywhere.

Cyber warfare: Silent hunt

U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Kevin Green, 52nd Communications Squadron defense team supervisor assigned to Spangdahlem Air Base, verifies the integrity of processes during exercise Tacet Venari at Ramstein Air Base, May 12. Tacet Venari is a cyber exercise where participants have hands-on experience in cyber warfare operations. The exercise provides Airmen the opportunity to identify, detect and respond to cyber threats.

Story and photo by Airman 1st Class Jared Lovett 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs The U.S Air Force’s cyber warfare capabilities are constantly expanding with the increased technological advancements over time. Along with this expansion comes the implementation of cyber Airmen’s means to develop competence and effectiveness in their ability to perform in cyber defense operations. One example of how the Air Force has implemented measures to improve Airmen’s effectiveness in cyberspace is through an exercise called Tacet Venari, which took place from May 9 to 20 and occurs on a quarterly basis. “Tacet Venari, latin for ‘silent hunt,’ is United States Air Forces in Europe – Air Forces Africa’s premiere defensive cyberspace operational training targeted at USAFE’s mission defense team,” said Maj. Ryan Barker, USAFE Headquarters chief information officer support branch chief.

The ‘silent hunt’ provides participants with the four phases of learning within a two-week period. “We educate, demonstrate, guide and then empower,” said Chief Master Sgt. Troy Houston, Tacet Venari technician lead. “This gives them the hands-on experience needed to be ready for a real-world scenario.” During the hands-on portion of the exercise, teams are set up to participate in either attacking or defending the network. There’s the Red Team, who attempts to infiltrate the network of the Blue Team, the defenders who consist of the Mission Defense Team. The MDT learns to recognize irregularities within the network and respond to threats. Occasionally, both teams merge to form a Purple Team during the exercise. “Both teams come together to have conversations about what they did right, what they did wrong, what they can learn from and how they can improve,” said Houston.

U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Marj Alfaro, 52nd Communications Squadron mission defense team supervisor assigned to Spangdahlem Air Base, performs network analysis during exercise Tacet Venari at Ramstein Air Base, May 17. Tacet Venari is a two-week cyber exercise that provides Airmen the opportunity to identify, detect and respond to cyber threats. The hands-on experience the exercise provides prepares Airmen for real-world cyber threat scenarios.

Cyber warfare capabilities are expected to drastically increase as the future approaches. Tacet Venari is vital in ensuring the U.S Air Force and its Airmen are always ready to defend against threats in cyberspace. Multiple units from the Air Force participated in the exercise, including the 86th Communications Squadron, 52nd Communications Squadron and the 1st Combat Communications Squadron. USAFE plans to bring in NATO allies and partners to participate in Tacet Venari in the upcoming future.

U.S. Air Force Senior Airman Frederic Borries, 52nd Communications Squadron chief of training assigned to Spangdahlem Air Base, instructs the Mission Defense Team during exercise Tacet Venari at Ramstein Air Base, May 10. Tacet Venari is a two-week cyber exercise providing Airmen with four phases of learning, to include education, demonstration, guidance and empowerment.

U.S. Air Force Tech. Sgt. Daniel Bowser, 1st Combat Communications Squadron mission defense team section chief assigned to Ramstein Air Base, discusses the integrity of data with other participants of Tacet Venari during the exercise at Ramstein Air Base, May 19. Tacet Venari is United States Air Forces in Europe – Air Forces Africa’s two-week long premiere defensive cyberspace operational training targeted at USAFE’s mission defense team.

East Gate closed / ROB-MC Gate opened Ramstein Air Base’s East Gate closed and the new Rhine Ordnance Barracks Medical Center (ROB-MC) Access Control Point (ACP) opened. The new ACP (or gate in Air Force speak) was built in preparation for the new medical center and will enable the anticipated increase in traffic once the medical center is fully operational. In the interim, as ROBMC is not due to open for several years, the new gate bolsters antiterrorism and force protection capabilities for the installation, enables smoother traffic flow off the L369 traffic circle, and provides your Defenders a more modern and safe work environment. The ROB-MC gate is located near the East Gate off the L369 traffic circle. If you have come onto the base through the East Gate in the last year, you may have driven through the new L369 circle. Once the gate opens there will be detour signs instructing drivers how to exit the L369 traffic circle and drive toward the ROB-MC ACP. When approaching the ACP please stay vigilant of traffic lights

that notify you of which lanes are open and when it’s safe to proceed forward. Just like the East Gate, the ROB-MC gate will be operational 24/7. Additionally, there will also be a new joint (Army/Air Force) Visitor Control Center (VCC), located just prior to the gate, which will open May 31. The ROB-MC VCC will provide the same visitor services as the current West Gate VCC and the Pulaski Installation Access Office, with operating hours of 6 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Short term visitor passes will be available Monday through Friday 6 a.m.-4 p.m. Long term DBIDS installation passes are available Monday through Thursday 8:30 a.m.-3 p.m., and Fridays from 8:30 a.m.noon. The ROB-MC VCC will be closed for all services on Federal Holidays. We are excited for the new project and ask for your patience. Please remain cautious while driving in this area during the transition as we the community adjust to the new traffic flow. Direct any questions to the 86th Security Forces Squadron at 480-6851 or 480-2050.

USTRANSCOM’s motto embodied in Operation Fly Formula

A C-17 Globemaster III assigned to Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam, Hawaii, carries pallets of infant formula at Ramstein Air Base, May 22. Hundreds of boxes of infant formula arrived from Switzerland and were unloaded, palletized and loaded on a C-17 for transport during Operation Fly Formula, an operation to quickly import infant formula to the United States that meets U.S. health and safety standards. Photo by Staff Sgt. Jacob Wongwai

by United States Transportation Command “Together, we deliver” is U.S. Transportation Command’s motto, and it played out in real time in May 22. The first airplane importing 132 pallets, or 78,000 pounds, of specialty infant formula arrived at Indianapolis International Airport. The C-17 Globemaster III military transport aircraft was loaded the day before at Ramstein Air Base, kicking off Operation Fly Formula. “Whether the needs are in Ukraine, India, or even right here at home; from deploying combat-credible forces, to providing vaccines, food, water and supplies during a pandemic or natural disaster, USTRANSCOM will deliver,” said Gen. Jacqueline D. Van Ovost, commander, USTRANSCOM. “Together with our industry partners, and allies and partners, we not only project and sustain the joint force to help ensure national security, but we continue to deliver hope, whenever and wherever.” Typically, the process to transport this product from Europe to the U.S. would take two weeks. President Joe Biden announced Operation Fly Formula May 18, when he requested the Departments of Agriculture and Health and Human Services to “work expeditiously to identify any and all avenues to speed importation…” Biden further requested that

over the next week to work with the Department of Defense to use contracted airlift to import the needed formula. In military jargon, that was an implied task and a warning order to USTRANSCOM, and planning started immediately. Hours before the president’s announcement, U.S. Navy Vice Adm. Dee Mewbourne, USTRANSCOM deputy commander, learned of the impending mission. “There is an emerging requirement to move baby formula into CONUS (continental U.S.) and it is anticipated that an EXECSEC memo (a document directing and authorizing the task) will be signed tonight or tomorrow to have formula moved via DoD-procured airlift,” he shared via correspondence to staff. “These moves will look similar to the moves we did for COVID vaccine needles/syringes.” The logistics planners in USTRANSCOM’s J3, the directorate responsible for operations planning and execution, and in AQ, the acquisition directorate, knew a requirement was imminent but didn’t know any of the requirements for planning. How much? Where was it coming from? When does it need to be delivered and to where? How do we engage with commercial carriers and ask for their availability for services if we can’t articulate what we need them to do?

Some pieces of the puzzle were learned the next day, May 19, when Thomas J. Vilsack, the Secretary of Agriculture, sent a Request for Assistance to the Secretary of Defense Lloyd J. Austin III, that requested “DOD provide support by establishing a dedicated, contracted air-bridge to move infant formula from Zurich, Switzerland, to Plainfield, Indiana, in the U.S. The company manufacturing this formula reports it takes approximately 21 days through commercial aircraft for the formula to ship and clear customs so it can enter distribution.” U.S. Navy Cmdr. Michael Sargent, a planner in USTRANSCOM’s J3 Sustainment Division, was tagged to oversee the planning efforts. With a draft Action Memo in hand, he assembled the necessary players from across the USTRANSCOM Joint Deployment and Distribution Enterprise and multiple federal agencies, from DoD, to State, to Agriculture, and Health and Human Services to places like Scott Air Force Base, Illinois, to multiple agency headquarters in Washington D.C. and Airmen in Europe. One of USTRANSCOM capabilities is giving leaders the options to meet strategic mobility challenges. With the team assembled, virtual planning meetings began in earnest. Every roadblock was mitigated and alternate solutions were discussed

until resolution. The pieces of the puzzle came together and approvals were in hand, but the sense of urgency led to another course of action because the long pole in the tent was the time to contract the flights. Robert Brisson, USTRANSCOM J3 deputy director, stated during one of the virtual meetings, “We’ve got two C-17s on Bravo Alert at Ramstein. If we can get the cargo from Switzerland to Ramstein, we can have wheels up Saturday (May 21) night.” Due to the urgency of the situation, Austin approved U.S. military aircraft for this mission, shortening the timeline by a couple days

that would have been required for contract acquisition, showcasing once again USTRANSCOM’s motto, “Together, we deliver.” USTRANSCOM exists as a warfighting combatant command to project and sustain military power at a time and place of the nation’s choosing. Powered by dedicated men and women, TRANSCOM underwrites the lethality of the joint force, advances American interests around the globe, and provides our nation’s leaders with strategic flexibility to select from multiple options, while creating multiple dilemmas for our adversaries.

NATO allies strategize, first EOD symposium

U.S. Air Force Airmen and service members from the Royal Air Force discuss Explosive Ordnance Disposal topics at Ramstein Air Base, May 19.

Story and photos by Airman 1st Class Madelyn Keech 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs The 786th Civil Engineer Squadron Explosive Ordnance Disposal flight hosted U.S. Air Forces in Europe’s first EOD symposium at Ramstein Air Base, May 19. Service members from the United Kingdom and the Netherlands attended the symposium to integrate U.S. allied partners and discuss how NATO allies and partners fit into the Air Force’s strategic vision. Speakers at the joint training event covered topics such as airfield recovery, information warfare, and the Air Force EOD strategic vision 2035. Since EOD falls under the Civil Engineer Squadron, they are responsible for recovering and assisting in repairing airfields. EOD contributes to airfield recovery by performing rapid explosive hazard mitigation. They do this by using mechanical and explosive clearance techniques to help remove or dispose of unexploded ordnances on the airfield before CE Airmen come in to repair the flightline. “I think a big factor that plays

in here is our role in the U.S. Air Force in recovering airfields,” said Staff Sgt. Emilio Solis, 786 CES EOD flight supply supervisor. “If there ever is a time where we need support, we can all back each other up.” Information warfare, an additional focus of the symposium, allows EOD to maintain awareness of emerging threats. It is crucial to understand threat levels, ensuring they are capable of doing their main mission: ensuring explosives in all domains are ready to be cleared. The Air Force EOD strategic vision 2035’s intended purpose is to share information which is key to staying up-to-date with our joint allies and partners. This reflects U.S. European Command’s second line of effort to strengthen solidarity and unity with allies and partners. “We are moving forward and we are going to keep working closer to sister services and our NATO allies,” said Staff Sgt. Taylor Lahteine, 435th Construction Training Squadron EOD contingency training instructor. “Being able to understand each other and being able to work together efficiently is very important to us.”

US Forces demonstrate their expertise at Rheinland-Pfalz-Tag in Mainz

Story and photos by Gina Hutchins-Inman 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs MAINZ — The annual Rheinland-Pfalz-Tag (State Fair) took place in Mainz, Germany, from May 20 to 22 with displays throughout the city center and along the Rhine River promenade. The three-day event included individual towns and cities showcasing their communities, and organizations and clubs informing visitors about their activities. The State Parliament conducted an open house where visitors could visit the chamber, and live music was presented on numerous stages. U.S. Air Force and Army units participated within the joint Military Capability Display area along with the German Bundeswehr. The 86th Civil Engineer Squadron Fire Department demonstrated the capability of their fire truck,

handed out fire helmets to children and talked about their daily tasks as firemen along with their mascot Sparky. The 786th Civil Engineer Squadron, Emergency Management Services, explained the differences between HAZMAT and MOPP gear and demonstrated devices to detect dangerous substances to interested visitors. HAZMAT and MOPP gear are suits to protect the body against dangerous substances. The Ramstein Hercules Innovation Lab demonstrated its 3-D printer, heat detecting equipment and the capability of its drones. Two U.S. Army units from the 21st Theater Sustainment Command also participated in the joint event. The 529th Military Police Company from Wiesbaden showcased their Humvee where visitors could climb in or try out a flak vest and a helmet. The 421st Medical Battalion had a

mobile emergency tent for injured personnel on display and demonstrated its highly mechanical barking, growling and injured DIESEL dog. A parade with 73 organizations and music groups concluded the event on Sunday afternoon with the U.S. Air Forces in Europe Band also entertaining the visitors with its tunes. Air Force and Army senior leadership represented the U.S. Forces during a visit to the military display area and at the reception hosted by Malu Dreyer, Minister President of Rheinland-Pfalz. The State of Rheinland-Pfalz has been host to the largest U.S. military presence in Germany for over seven decades and celebrated its 75th anniversary in May. The State Fair offered an excellent opportunity for the U.S. Armed Forces to display their diverse areas of expertise in an encounter with the local populace and to promote German-American friendship.

US Air Force Airmen participate in Greek exercise Stolen Cerberus IX Story and photo by Airman 1st Class Alexcia Givens 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs ELEFSINA AIR BASE, Greece — Exercise Stolen Cerberus IX, a multilateral training with the Hellenic air force concluded at Elefsina Air Base, Greece, May 12. Stolen Cerberus is an annual two-week flying training deployment designed to assess and open airbases and perform initial airfield operations enabling rapid standup of combat operations anywhere in the U.S. European Command area of responsibility. U.S. Air Force Airmen and three C-130J Super Hercules aircraft assigned to the 37th Airlift Squadron, 86th Airlift Wing, Ramstein Air Base, and personnel assigned to the 435th Air Ground Operations Wing supported the exercise. “The Airmen that participated in this training are flexible, adaptable, and know that in order to succeed during this training you need to understand the larger implication of the work we are doing,” said Capt. Issac Cathey, 37th Airlift

Squadron Stolen Cerberus mission commander. The bilateral training exercise included low-level defensive flying maneuvers, cargo air-drops, combat offloads for cargo pallets, attempted mid-flight interception simulations and emergency medical evacuations. The purpose of the training is to strengthen interoperability and airlift capabilities among allied armed forces through realistic joint, air operation scenarios. “It’s great to see that within the airborne community that, while things are different, we essentially all speak the same language,” said Tech. Sgt. Mark Melchiori, 435th Security Forces Squadron jumpmaster team lead. “We can all understand the process.” Stolen Cerberus improves overall coordination with Allied and partner militaries assuring the U.S. commitment to increasing the capability, readiness and responsiveness of alliance’s forces. “We know that as a result of doing this training we increase our ability to defend peace as well as help those in need,” said Cathey.

Customs on hunting trophies by United States European Command Customs

Hunting trophies are not only sought after by hunters but also by people wanting to give their home that unique rustic touch. But is it difficult to get one back to the States if you acquire one over here in Europe? “There are generally no USDA restrictions on animal trophies

that are fully-finished for display,” said Tim Sellman, director of the U.S. European Command’s Customs and Border Clearance Agency. He added that fully finished trophies are ones that are professionally mounted by a reputable taxidermist. When it is time to ship your household goods, customs inspectors will examine the trophy for signs of tissue, blood, etc, and, if found, would look for evidence of the trophy being professionally finished. Paperwork from the taxidermist is the best way to confirm that the trophy meets requirements but even taxidermist placards or trademarks on the back of the mounts are helpful. There are, however, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service restrictions and prohibitions on the importa-

tion of mounted birds and animals, including elephant ivory, elephant parts, and products thereof. Importers contemplating entry into the CTUs of these items should contact the Customs Executive Agency to assist in obtaining detailed requirements from the Veterinary Services, Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service, U.S. Department of Agriculture, in advance of leaving the country of origin. Federal Law and the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora prohibit certain wildlife and wildlife parts and products. Elephant ivory, elephant parts, and products made thereof are prohibited unless from legally taken hunting trophies (hunting permits required) or

Leashing dogs The Office of Public Order (Ordnungsamt) reminds dog owners that they need to keep their dogs on a leash inside developed areas in community limits at all times. Outside developed areas, dogs must be automatically put on a leash in case of other persons approaching. Violations against these rules may be punished by fines up to € 5,000. The pollution of public places, in particular parks and playgrounds, with dog feces is on the rise, creating a health hazard particularly to children and a nuisance to the inhabitants as well as the community workers required to clean the litter.

21 STB, TSC hosts Suicide Prevention and Resiliency training, “I care...we care” by Sgt. First Class Elizabeth Walcott Special Troops Battalion, 21st Sustainment Theater Command, Suicide Prevention Coordinator The 21st Theater Sustainment Command hosts Suicide Prevention training highlighting the “I Care…We Care” campaign. The event includes Soldiers and civilians addressing concerns and provides resources to leaders to help them manage the Army’s most valuable resource, its people. Leaders learn how to actively engage in practices that encourage and motivate people to build their resilience and enhance their readiness. To build trust, leaders should put forth positive actions, conduct resiliency training, encourage visiting behavioral health, engage in behavior that benefits everyone in the organization (prosocial behavior) and exhibit further emotional intelligence skills to improve the climate of the organization. Leaders are given advice for more holistic approaches to help

with overall Soldier wellness, and to help prevent high-risk behaviors. Using these techniques, leaders can establish strengthened connections within the unit, and promote a climate of trust and

cohesion. This renewed relationship between team members and leaders can help change the trajectory of someone’s life by mitigating and recognizing stressors so they do not culminate into a crisis.

Leaders were given resources to help maintain the unit readiness, personnel readiness and the individual Soldiers’ ability to perform their duties. Many highrisk behaviors can contribute to personal, family, and mission

readiness impacting our daily lives. This campaign and training reinforces that our Soldiers in 21 TSC have engaged leaders, Soldiers, civilians and German partnerships.

by Capt. Andrew Paulin 21st Theater Sustainment Command 21st Theater Sustainment Command Soldiers participated in multiple Memorial Day ceremonies across Germany and France on May 26 and 29. The 21st TSC held a Memorial Day ceremony Thursday here to remember and honor the 34 men and women from the 21st TSC who died while defending our nation. “The legacy of those that we honor today lives on because we know what motivated them. It was not for the wealth, it was not for fame, it was for their country,” said Col. Douglas LeVien, Deputy Commanding Officer, 21st Theater Sustainment Command. “So it is suitable that we gather here to remember the 21st Theater Sustainment Command Soldiers who gave the last full measure of devotion. It is those heroes who

made the ultimate sacrifice that we remember today.” On May 29, 21st TSC Soldiers participated in ceremonies with French service members and government officials at American Battle Monuments Commission cemeteries throughout France. At Lorraine American Cemetery, Saint-Avold, France, an Honor Guard Platoon of 26 Soldiers paid their respects to nearly 10,500 American servicemen and women laid to rest in the largest American World War II military cemetery in Europe. “Getting the opportunity to participate in this year’s Memorial Day ceremony was an honor for not only myself but also the Soldiers and NCOs in the 21st TSC,” said Sgt. 1st Class Taveon Nottingham, the 21st TSC Honor Guard Platoon Sergeant, for Lorraine American Cemetery and Memorial, SaintAvold, France. following World War I, Congress recognized the need for federal control over the commemoration of American armed forces overseas. On March 4, 1923, President Warren Harding signed legislation that established the American Battle Monuments Commission and made the new agency responsible for the construction of monuments honoring the American Expeditionary Forces. The AMBC operates and maintains 26 permanent American military cemeteries and 32 federal memorials, monuments and markers, which are located in 17 foreign countries, the U.S. Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, and the British Dependency of Gibraltar; four of the memorials are located within the United States.

Sergeant major, career counselor exemplifies Aloha Spirit Story and photo by Eleanor Prohaska 21st Theater Sustainment Command Soldiers in the 21st Theater Sustainment Command love what they do. That’s what Sgt. Maj. Brian Pascual, leader of the 21st TSC Retention Team strives to ensure. Pascual — who hails from Waipahu, Hawai’i — grew up with the “Aloha Spirit,” which emphasizes unity and caring for others. “I was raised to be unselfish, and being a Soldier you have to serve selflessly,” he said. According to the State of Hawai’i Revised Statutes, the Aloha Spirit is the coordination of mind and heart within each person. It is based on the concepts of kindness, harmony, agreeability, humility and patience and is the working philosophy of Native Hawaiians. This philosophy has influenced Pascual’s approach to retention, helping Soldiers and their families thrive in the U.S. Army. “Helping Soldiers define their purpose is key,” said Pascual. He explained that while education, the desire to serve their country and the ability to provide their families a good quality of life are strong motivators for enlisting, when it comes to retention Soldiers must explore career opportunities. “It takes a special Soldier and family to serve,” said Pascual. “It comes with sacrifices a lot of people don’t understand. It’s not just about the money. You have to love what you do.” According to Pascual, many Soldiers don’t realize their own talents and potential. So, we [the retention team] recommend and guide them,” he said. “It’s about finding that niche. I always tell Soldiers, ‘Do something you love,’ and then it comes naturally.” Pascual is doing what he loves, helping other Soldiers chart their Army careers, ensuring they have the opportunity to reach their full potential. The 21st TSC Retention Team recently earned the U.S. Army Europe-Africa Commanding General Retention Excellence Award for topproducing large command by retaining 1,400 Soldiers in fiscal year 2021 — 128 percent of their goal. Pascual’s achievements and his family’s modest background give him credibility when talking to other Soldiers. His paternal grandfather immigrated to Hawai’i from the Philippines and along with Pascual’s father, worked hard to provide for their families. Pascual’s maternal grandfather also served in the U.S. Navy. Influenced by this strong familial work ethic, Pascual knew as a young boy that he wanted to serve his country. He started his Army career as a

21st Theater Sustainment Command Deputy Commander Col. Doug LeVien (left) speaks with featured speaker Sgt. Maj. Brian Pascual (right), 21st TSC Career Counselor, at the 21st TSC Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month observance at Kleber Clock Tower Café, Kaiserslautern, May 20.

petroleum supply specialist and had no desire to do retention. But during his time as a non-commissioned officer in charge deployed to Iraq in 2005-2006, he was challenged to try something new. “It was a first sergeant who saw something in me, that I never did,” Pascual recalled. “He made me his retention guy. I told him I didn’t want to do that, and he said, ‘Hey, you are the sergeant, I am the first sergeant. You are going to do what I tell you to do. “So I did it, and in a couple weeks I retained over 50 soldiers. He fired the last retention guy and said, ‘Sgt. Pascual, you’re it,’ and I still didn’t want to do it.” But when his unit at Fort Sill needed career counselors, he became the full-time retention noncommissioned officer. He ultimately realized that retention was his calling. “That first sergeant saw something in me that I did not know was for me,” said Pascual. “I use that experience to pass on to the next Soldier and family. Sometimes it takes someone from the outside to show us. Being a career

counselor was my calling, but I did not realize it.” Pascual excelled in his new career and is the first in his family to have achieved the rank of sergeant major. Despite his many successes, Pascual displays ha’aha’a — or humility — a key component of the Aloha Spirit. “Serving next to my brother and sisters, to me is there’s nothing in the world that I would rather do,” he said. “No other profession that could replace this. It is bigger than ourselves.” According to Pascual’s wife, Chasity Yagin-Pascual, their family has had the opportunity to see the world and meet new people thanks to his military service. Military Medical Museum celebrates 160th birthday with mobile app Story and photo by National Museum of Health and Medicine Public Affairs On May 21, 1862, Army Surgeon General William Hammond issued Circular No. 2: As it is proposed to establish in Washington, an Army Medical Museum, Medical officers are directed diligently to collect… all specimens of morbid anatomy, surgical or medical…; together with projectiles and foreign bodies removed, and such other matters as may prove of interest in the study of military medicine or surgery.” From the development of the typhoid vaccine — U.S. Military Immunization: The Fight against Infectious Diseases On the NMHM website to the invention of the photomicrograph — Illuminating the History and Process of Photomicrography at the National Museum of Health and Medicine on the NMHM for the study of pathological specimens, the museum has been involved in the forefront of military medical research. Now, 160 years later, the Army Medical Museum is still collecting, researching, and informing on the study of military medicine as

the National Museum of Health and Medicine. As a repository detailing the history of military medical innovation and research, NMHM engages visitors with specimens and artifacts from the Civil War to modern-day combat support. “Few of the nation’s more than thirty thousand museums reach the century mark; fewer still have had the privilege of caring for a

collection as remarkable as this for 160 years,” museum director Adrianne Noe, Ph.D., said. “But this museum, even from its earliest days, was not one that focused exclusively on interpreting the past. Learning from it, of course; preserving it, always; but contributing it to the future of military medicine? That’s something that we are uniquely well-positioned to do, and we look forward to accomplishing

that for the visitors and researchers for many more years. We’ll continue to do this with a dedicated professional staff and a cadre of generous and creative volunteers.” In honor of the museum’s 160th birthday, NMHM will release a mobile app. The museum experience has transformed since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, compelling museums and other cultural institutions to adapt to the continually changing atmosphere in visitor engagement. One such change is the inclusion of a virtual environment Education page on the NMHM website. With the offering of virtual opportunities, to include events,

tours, and exhibitsExhibits page on the NMHM, NMHM continues to engage visitors. The app can be accessed on any mobile device and will provide viewers with additional content about the museum’s collections. For example, the fractured tibia and fibula (lower leg bones) from Civil War Union general, Maj. Gen. Daniel E. Sickles: His Contribution to the Army Medical Museum on the NMHM website, and the type of cannonball that injured him are on display at the museum. The app will showcase supplementary imagery and link to articles and other resources to provide further context and enhance the visitor experience. According to Andrea Schierkolk, museum public programs manager, “The mobile app will provide visitors with a more universal approach toward exploring the museum onsite or from remote locations. This hybrid approach will improve the visitor experience by making the museum’s exhibits, collections, and programs more accessible to a wider audience. App users will be able to listen to stories, watch videos, and look at images that will allow them to explore innovations in military medicine from a variety of perspectives.” Plan your visit to NMHM on the NMHM website today at https:// www.medicalmuseum.mil, and explore the app.

NICE from Page 1 Here are five destination ideas to make your holiday in Nice as nice as it can be! 1. Beaches With beautiful weather and sun all year long, Nice is a great place for those who love to tan and spend their time in the warmth. Rent a bed on one of the pebbly beaches and enjoy the comfort and luxury offered by selected hotels. Castel Plage is a very popular private beach and very close to the Old Town, with its own restaurant, which offers a great service for its visitors. 2. Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art Nice is the place where old and contemporary art come together in a perfect mix. The Musée d’Art Moderne et d’Art Contemporain is located in the city

center and hosts a collection of beautiful masterpieces of both European and American modern art, featuring new realism and pop art. In the Musée Matisse you can admire paintings by some of the most famous modernist artists. Take time as well for a visit to the Musée National Message Biblique Marc Chagall, which offers a collection of biblically themed paintings located in a bunker-like building. 3. Promenade des Anglais Enjoy the sun and the view of the sea from the Promenade des Anglais, which is 7 km long and stretches all along the coastline. From here, you can reach the Collines du Château (The Castle Hill), climb the steps and enjoy the landscape and hire a bike or a pair of rollerblades in the Old Town. Along the promenade, there are also many cafés and restaurants where you can have a relaxing lunch while watching people pass by.

4. The Old Town The Old Town of Nice is the center of the city, and is full of artisan shops, cafés, bars and markets. This area is very active, both at day and night, and it’s the perfect place to have a traditional meal or a drink with friends. Don’t miss the fish market in Place Saint François and the Cathédrale Sainte Réparate in Place Rossetti. If you like art, there are a lot of artist shops in Rue Droite where you can buy lovely paintings and sculptures. 5. The Roman Ruins If you are into history, you need to visit the neighborhood of Cimiez and the ruins of an old Roman settlement: Cemenelum. The ruins include an arena, an amphitheater, thermal baths and a basilica. Nice has all you need to enjoy a relaxing holiday on the beach surrounded by art and history, so better book your flight and head to South France. It’s Nice, and it’s sunny!

Due to regulations to prevent the spread of COVID-19, bookings and trips may be cancelled or postponed, and travel to neighboring countries may not be allowed. Please verify the status before making plans to attend. For U.S. government employees, including service members, remember to always follow command regulations, which may be different than host nation policies.

Appreciation, acknowledgement for Marc J. Gonsalves Chief Master Sergeant dedicated to maintaining, caring for American Kindergraves

Story and photo courtesy of City of Kaiserslautern Kaiserslautern Deputy Mayor Peter Kiefer presented a certificate and a Kaiserslautern city medal of honor to U.S. Air Force Chief Master Sgt. Marc Gonsalves, 37th Airlift Squadron senior enlisted leader, and his wife, for maintaining and caring for American Kindergraves. In his speech, Kiefer emphasized, “I’m delighted to personally thank you for your dedication in maintaining and keeping up the Kindergraves at our main cemetery.”

The Kindergraves were established between 1952 and 1971 and are still visited by relatives today. During that period a total of 457 children of U.S. parents stationed in Kaiserslautern were laid to rest. Financial support for the transfer of the deceased children to the USA was not available at that time and therefore the city provided a burial ground at the cemetery. Members of the U.S. Air Force, Army and the GermanAmerican & International Women’s Club still take care of the graves with passion and dedication.
