Ramstein Airmen prepare for exercise Agile Spirit

U.S. Air Force Airmen assigned to Ramstein Air Base, walk across the flight line during exercise Agile Spirit 21 at Tbilisi, Georgia, July 24. Select Airmen were sent to Tbilisi prior to the exercise to coordinate mission operations before the remainder of the participating Airmen arrived. Georgia is a strategic partner to U.S. and NATO forces in Europe, and Agile Spirit 21 gives them the ability to conduct multinational training in a real-time, realistic setting throughout the European theater. Senate confirms Kendall to be Air Force Secretary

by Charles Pope Secretary of the Air Force Public Affairs

“With regard to mission performance, I believe the range and severity of the threats that we face and will face, the rapid pace of technological innovation, and the need to rapidly harness that technology in new operational concepts demand a sense of urgency and a like focus on getting our choices right,” he said during that hearing. Kendall also committed during his confirmation hearing that he would ensure the U.S. Space Force’s continued growth and evolution. The two-year-old Space Force, Kendall said in May, is “a critical contributor to our national security. If confirmed, I’ll be honored to have a role in making it a success.” While the Senate’s action marks

the first time Kendall will work directly within the Department of the Air Force, he is hardly unfamiliar with the mission, the Department of the Defense and national security. He previously served in a number of senior positions for the Department of Defense, including as the Pentagon’s No. 3 official for four years during the Obama administration. Kendall assumes the seat occupied by John Roth, who has served as Acting Air Force Secretary since Jan. 20. A graduate of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, New York, Kendall served 10 years on active duty in the Army, a tenure that also

included a stint teaching engineering at West Point. Kendall spent time in the Pentagon as director of the tactical warfare program before moving to become assistant deputy undersecretary for Strategic Defense Systems. Kendall also worked in the private sector in defense-related jobs, most notably as Raytheon’s vice president of engineering during the mid-1990s. In addition to graduating from West Point, Kendall earned a master’s degree in aerospace engineering from The California Institute of Technology. He earned his law degree from Georgetown University Law Center as well as an MBA from C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University.

Frank Kendall won confirmation from the Senate July 26 to be the 26th Secretary of the Air Force, placing an official with decadeslong service in defense issues in the top civilian job at a time when the department is navigating new global challenges and wide-reaching modernization efforts. The vote reflected both Kendall’s well-known record in previous active duty and policy jobs and his philosophy for leading the Department of the Air Force. With his confirmation, Kendall will be able to more fully articulate his priorities and policy preferences

for how best to position the Air and Space Forces to contend with China, Russia and other strategic competitors, as well as continue to modernize the force and adapt to budget pressures. The broad strokes, however, are already known. “If confirmed, my priorities would be straightforward and mirror precisely those articulated by Secretary of Defense (Lloyd) Austin as they apply to the Department of the Air Force – taking care of our people, mission performance and building teams. Our military is people first and foremost,” Kendall told the Senate Armed Services Committee during his confirmation hearing May 25.

Airmen from the 86 MUNS have been using a makeshift constructed from a wire hanger and are partnering with the Operational Planning Team and 86th Maintenance Squadron to find a more efficient way to clear the chaffs and dispose of the aluminum separately as required by German law. Photo by Airman 1st Class Alexcia Givens

by Airman 1st Class Alexcia Givens 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs When Airmen from the 86th Munitions Squadron attended an innovation course that explained the importance of new methods and processes in the Air Force, it ignited an idea. With the course still fresh in their minds, the Airmen questioned whether the current process of removing aluminum from decoy chaffs — a radar countermeasure used by aircraft consisting of aluminum coated fiberglass — could be less time-consuming. “If something is a pain and it’s not the quickest way of doing something, then ask whether the task could be made easier or done faster,” said Senior Airman Blake Justen, 86 MUNS conventional munitions technician. Clearing the decoy chaffs is done differently at every base.

Additionally, German laws require the aluminum to be disposed of separately from the chaff, which differs from requirements in the United States. Airmen from the 86 MUNS have been clearing aluminum from chaffs with a makeshift tool constructed from a wire hanger for years. It typically takes Airmen weeks to clear more than 20,000 chaffs located on Ramstein. They decided to take their concerns to the Operational Planning Team, which is responsible to direct a charter and baseline for innovation resources and efforts across the installation. The first project the team tackled was a solution for the 86 MUNS issue with emptying chaffs. The OPT and 86 MUNS sought help from the 86 Maintenance Squadron to help simplify the process. The first prototype was a metal

bar that was welded to a handle to create something sturdier than their makeshift tool. Then, the 86 MXS created a tool using a water jet. However, both tools still required the Airmen to manually do everything. “What we are trying to do is come up with a process to make it more efficient, so it is less labor intensive,” said Staff Sgt. Jason Barnes, an 86 MXS aircraft metals technology craftsman. “The goal is to create a device that can be used to clear multiple chaffs at a time.” The process allowed for OPT, 86 MUNS and 86 MXS to team together and create two separate tools which makes the chaff emptying process easier, but they’re still working focused on making an even more efficient process. “More people should question processes,” said Justen. “It takes a little initiative, but that’s all it takes at the end of the day.’’

Asking for success by Airman 1st Class Madelyn Keech 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Senior Airman Alexander Peterson, 86th Medical Group human performance and ophthalmic technician, was awarded Airlifter of the Week at Ramstein Air Base, July 15. Peterson was nominated AotW for his problem-solving across the installation, including working with the 86th Maintenance Group to streamline their root cause analysis process improvement. Peterson wanted to join the military to make things better for the United States and other countries. Originally, he came into the military trying to be a survival, evasion, resistance and escape specialist, but was unable to medically qualify for the field. “They pushed me over to medical, and I had put down all these jobs like security forces,” he said. “It was by chance that I got into this career field, but I’m really lucky that I did.” Peterson spends his day working with an ophthalmologist performing vision tests and providing additional care for patients. On his project with the 86 MXG, Peterson contributed solutions to their root cause analysis process improvement for the human performance aspect of his job. The project focused on finding the root cause of why Airmen failed quality inspections on aircraft systems. “He designed a streamlined questionnaire and flowcharts, eliminating the need for 144 questions, effectively reducing mishap investigation times by 90 percent,” said Senior Master Sgt. Gabriel Canales, 86 MDG superintendent. The questionnaire gave Airmen a more transparent voice with their leadership to find root causes of quality inspection failures. “It finds out what’s going on with those Airmen and if they need assistance with anything, or gets down to the real root cause of the issue,” Peterson said.

Trevor Rhynes

Peterson was recognized by the 86 MXG commander with a letter of appreciation. “Coming here to Ramstein, I really liked my job because of how awesome our teammates are,” said Peterson. “They’ve been really helpful and motivating and giving me a lot of opportunities for success.” Peterson said he likes the human performance aspect of his job. Outside of work, he spends a lot of time working out, and reads about what the U.S. Air Force Academy is doing in regards to human performance. “They have one of the most modern programs for their sports teams,” he said. “I do a lot of

research into what we can do to make not just the medical group better, but to make the airlift wing better.” Peterson said his favorite part of his job is getting to interact with all the patients and people he meets every day. “When I’m feeling overwhelmed, it’s our patients that just keep me going,” he said. “The last thing someone who worked a long shift wants is to come into a medical appointment and have a bad experience. The thing that keeps me going is just making a small difference in someone’s day because you never know what it means to that person.”

GRAF IGNATIEVO AIR BASE, BULGARIA — More than 150 Airmen and eight F-16 Fighting Falcons assigned to the 555th Fighter Squadron, Aviano Air Base, Italy, participated in Thracian Star 21, a Bulgarian air force-led exercise aiming to enhance interoperability and the ability to rapidly deploy to remote locations, July 9-22. Thracian Star 21 is a multilateral training exercise designed to increase operational capacity, capability and interoperability with the Bulgarian, Romanian and Hellenic air forces. Training mission sets, during the exercise, included offensive and defensive counter-air, protection of high value assets, and close air support in a contested environment. “We flew with the Romanian and Hellenic air forces, and then we flew against the Bulgarian air force SA-6 and SA-8 and that was a really great experience because we don’t have that kind of training at Aviano,” said U.S. Air Force Capt. Justin Goar, 555th FS F-16 pilot and project officer of Thracian Star 21. “Flying against a live emitter is a once in a lifetime opportunity for a lot of people, so it’s great training for us to come out here and fly against a real surface-to-air system.” Airmen assigned to the 435th Construction and Training Squadron and 4th Combat Training Squadron, Ramstein Air Base, Germany, also participated in Thracian Star 21. “We flew close air support with the Bulgarian SU-25s and that was the first time they’ve used U.S. JTACs ( Joint Terminal Attack Controller) on the range and that was a highlight,” said Goar. “Normally they don’t use JTACs, but as a NATO country they could potentially find themselves working with JTACs and integrating with other NATO air-

to-ground assets in the future especially once they get F-16s. That was interesting to see.” During Thracian Star 21, the U.S. Air Force F-16s were able to employ a variety of munitions at the ranges in Bulgaria. They employed aircraft weapons systems with live ammunition helped service members maintain their familiarization with those systems. The U.S. Air Force F-16s employed 27 inert training munitions, 180 rockets and approximately 7,000 rounds of 20 MM ammunition, said Tech. Sgt. Kyle Bubb, 31st Munitions Squadron stockpile management production

supervisor. Successful partnering exercises such as Thracian Star 21 result in progressive relationships and leads to tangible, mutual benefits during peacetime and contingencies through actions such as regional security, access and coalition operations. “Exercises like Thracian Star are critical to the role we play at Aviano as a trusted NATO ally,” said U.S. Air Force Capt. U.S. Army Sgt. Colten Herrera, healthcare specialist, Primary Care Clinic, U.S. Army Health Clinic Wiesbaden, was the winner in the noncommissioned officer category. “Being physically fit and mentally ready is our whole focus as Soldiers. It is our job to be ready for wherever the next global conflict might be,” said Herrera. Herrera, a native of Albuquerque, New Mexico, says he was volunteered by his unit to participate. Reflecting on the competition, Herrera states he encourages all Soldiers to participate in the competition for the challenge and experience.

“I bonded with other competitors, we became a very tightknit family in the course of a couple days,” explains Herrera. “(Top medical leaders) in the Army have said, ‘Army Medicine is Army Strong,’ it’s not just a saying, it’s a culture and a mindset that permeates from the three-star general down to the private,” said U.S. Army Command Sgt. Maj. Fergus Joseph, command sergeant major, LRMC. “What I saw over the past few days was Soldiers whose limits were tested, who didn’t know how much gas they had in their tanks.” Best warrior competitions are held annually at many units across the Army, with top finalists pitted against one another at the U.S. Army level. According to the Army, the Best Warrior Competition recognizes Soldiers who demonstrate commitment to the Army values, embody the Warrior Ethos and represent the force of the future. “It was a good test of our intestinal fortitude and general Soldier skills,” explains U.S. Army Sgt. Megan Hataway, an orthopedic specialist and noncommissioned officer in charge, Orthopedics and Dermatology Clinic, U.S. Army Health Clinic Vicenza. “This competition showed me some areas of strengths and weaknesses I didn’t realize I had. Definitely got in a good workout.” Hataway, the only female Soldier in the competition, states competitions like this are a reminder of what the Army asks for from all Soldiers, not just males. “For me, we all wear green and bleed red. It is important for ladies in the Army to recognize that we need to be training to be just as

The competition challenged Soldiers from across Germany, Belgium and Italy, physically, emotionally and spiritually as they were tested on various tasks and skills including Army Warrior Tasks, medical knowledge and prolonged field care, stress shoot, military Drill and ceremony, ruck marches, land navigation, combat lifesaving under pressure, combat water survival, and written and oral examinations.

physically and mentally tough as the men,” said Hataway, a native of Severn, Maryland. “I think it is very important for more women to compete and challenge themselves in competitions like this. Women bring different mindsets and thought processes to the military which is great; it ultimately makes us a more lethal force.” Although she didn’t walk away with top honors, Hataway was influenced by the experience and plans to take on other physically challenging opportunities throughout her military career. “What impressed me the most during the competition was, despite this being a competition, when you were out there in the thick in the battle, in the heat of the event, you still cheered on your competitor, your teammates,”

said U.S. Army Col. Andrew Landers, commander, LRMC. “That’s what it means to be a Soldier; (not only do) we want to be the best we can be, we want our teammates to be the best they can be.” As competitors pushed, pulled and climbed to their next task, the competition, unknowingly to them, aimed to reinforce the importance of overall readiness. “We push ourselves and we push those to our left and our right,” said Landers, discussing the Army’s Warrior ethos. “That’s what drives us as Soldiers, as Warriors, we all have a mission and we have to succeed.” The winners will go on to compete at the Regional Health Command Europe Best Warrior Competition later this year.

July 30, 2021 THRACIAN STAR from Page 8 “We are eager to have them and we expect in maybe three or four years for the first F-16s to get here and one of the latest modifications, so it will be a really really nice aircraft,” said Bulgarian air force Maj. Petar Milkov, L-39 Albatros instructor pilot and Thracian Star 21 project officer. “We’re supposed to get a total of total aircraft. We already have a contract for the first eight and we already have some of our pilots in the U.S. getting their initial F-16 training.”

Bulgaria seeks to have an active NATO, interoperable, and multirole fighter squadron that participates in multinational fighter exercises. “In previous years, we flew together in joint missions, and I could say that it’s very positive for us,” said Milkov. “I hope that we can participate in more and more exercises, Thracian Star is the largest one.” U.S. Air Force members conducted different F-16 familiarization training to include hydrazine emergency response procedures and armament system familiariza-

tion procedures, with Bulgarian air force members on U.S. Air Force F-16s. “We were just partnering with the Tennessee National Guard and they’re out here to help train the Bulgarian fire department,” said Tech Sgt. Steven Rousseau, 31st Civil Engineer Squadron fire department assistant chief of operations. “We all collaborated together, because we have the F-16 aircraft. We went over emergency response procedures and the safest way to help make that aircraft fire safe, so that the maintainers and

Page 13 mechanics can do their job.” Participation in Thracian Star 21 offers an opportunity for Airmen to train and hone in on operational and tactical skills. “Thracian Star gave us the opportunity to build munitions and rockets as well as work with our maintenance counterparts to hone our ACE (Agile Combat Employment) concept skills and further develop multi-capable Airmen,” said Staff Sgt. Pierre Johnson-Alexander, 31st Munitions Squadron inspector. Continual exercises like

Thracian Star 21 and interactions between allied and partner forces allow allied forces to work together as a team to address security threats and enable all participants to contribute to international coalitions. “We already built the personal relationships so when the Bulgarians get F-16s in the future it will be a matter of refining the tactics,” said Goar. “We should be able to integrate even more closely at that point so that is why I am excited about participating in future Thracian exercises.”

U.S. Air Force Senior Master Sgt. Joel Remsnyder, 555th Aircraft Maintenance Unit weapons section chief, middle, teaches armament system familiarization procedures to Bulgarian air force members on a U.S. Air Force F-16 Fighting Falcon assigned to the 555th Fighter Squadron at Graf Ignatievo Air Base, Bulgaria, July 16. More than 150 Airmen and eight F-16s assigned to the 555th FS participated in Thracian Star 21, a Bulgarian air force-led exercise aiming to enhance interoperability and the ability to rapidly deploy to remote locations. The seaport in Alexandroupoli, Greece, is currently supporting the movement of hundreds of U.S. Army equipment items for the upcoming iteration of Atlantic Resolve. The 598th Transportation Brigade, Surface Deployment and Distribution Command and the 21st Theater Sustainment Command began offloading nearly 400 vehicles and containers at Alexandroupoli to include tanks, Bradley Fighting Vehicles and a variety of support equipment, July 20. The equipment belongs to the 1st Armored Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division from Fort Riley, Kansas. The 1st ABCT is the eighth armored brigade to deploy to Europe in support of Atlantic Resolve. Following initial staging at the port, the equipment will move by rail and commercial line-haul to forward operating locations in central and eastern Europe. Alexandroupoli’s strategically located seaport has become a critiKAISERSLAUTERN

cally important transportation and logistical hub for U.S. Army forces. “The current operation represents the culmination of all the efforts that the U.S. Army, along with our interagency partners at the U.S. Embassy, our allies in Greece and our industry partners, have put in place to leverage the capabilities of this tremendous port,” said Col. Joshua D. Hirsch, Commander, 598th TBDE. “In the last two weeks alone, we’ve redeployed equipment from DEFENDER-Europe 21 and uploaded equipment from the 1st Armored Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division as it heads home following the completion of its own Atlantic Resolve rotation. It’s not only the amount of equipment we’re now able to move through Alexandroupoli, it’s also the type of equipment. For example, this is the very first time we’ve used the port to support the arrival and departure of M1s, Bradleys and other armored and tracked vehicles. That’s an incredible milestone for the entire team here.” In 2019, the U.S. Army, U.S. Navy and commercial partners successfully completed a dredging operation at the Alexandroupoli port involving the removal of a sunken barge called the ‘Olga’ which had previously limited use of the facility’s capabilities. “Over the last two and half years, Alexandroupoli has developed into one of the most vital ports in Europe for the movement of Army equipment,” said Andre J. Cameron, Director, Transportation Corps, Eastern Mediterranean (Greece). “The investments in the port’s infrastructure have been a true strategic success for the Army and our partners. We’ve gone from essentially conducting ‘zero operations’ at the port to conducting eight port operations in the last year alone. We’ve now proven we can move aviation and armored units at Alexandroupoli, using both commercial line-haul and rail. Basically, we can do it all here.” In many ways, the port’s location is as important as its capabilities. “We’ve worked hard to diversify the range of seaports able to support Army forces all across Europe,” added Hirsch. “What the team has achieved here in Alexandroupoli pro-

vides additional strategic maneuver options for land-force commanders in the southern European region. Working with our allies and partners, this port will allow us to move combat power, rapidly and effectively, in an increasingly critical part of our area of operations.” The 1st ABCT, 1st ID is deploying with approximately 3,800 Soldiers, 80 tanks, 130 Bradley Fighting Vehicles, 10 Bradley (Variant) Fire Support Team vehicles, 15 Paladins, 500 tracked vehicles, 850 trailers and 1500 wheeled vehicles and other pieces of equipment. The 1st ABCT’s equipment is also arriving at ports located in Gdansk and Gdynia, Poland, and Klaipeda, Lithuania, in addition to the port in Alexandroupoli. “The initial offload of 1st ABCT’s equipment was executed without a hitch,” said Lt. Col. Carey E. Way, Commander, 839th Transportation BN. “We’ve got a ‘Team of Teams’ at the port that includes the deploying unit, 21st TSC, Military Sealift Command and terminal operations personnel from our commercial partners. We’ve been working together well over several port operations here and we’ve got the right kind of relationships to make complex transportation and logistics movements like this happen smoothly and safely.” The deployment of ready, combatcredible U.S. forces to Europe in support of Atlantic Resolve is evidence of the strong and unremitting U.S. commitment to NATO and Europe. Through bilateral, joint, and multinational training, Atlantic Resolve builds readiness, increases interoperability, and enhances the bond between ally and partner militaries. All movements of personnel and equipment are conducted while adhering to the prevention and protection guidance directed by the Department of Defense, Department of the Army, Centers for Disease Control, host nation governments, and local authorities to proactively mitigate the spread of COVID-19. The health, safety, and security of U.S. personnel and U.S. allies, partners, and local populations is a DOD priority. E-scooters in Germany — dos and don’ts Germany requires insurance tags for e-scooters for travel on public roads.

by Gerlinde Hoyle U.S. Army Garrison Ansbach E-Scooters were finally authorized for use on German roads almost exactly two years ago and they were quickly adopted as the perfect mode of transportation for short distances. These electric pedal scooters are usually small and easy to transport, often even foldable. The perfect vehicle for inner cities and short distance commutes. These “Small Electric Vehicles,” as they are called in official bureaucratic German, are regulated in a 50-page ordinance by the Federal Ministry of Transport. The most important rules for riding an e-scooter on a German road are: • The maximum speed must not exceed 20 km per hour. • Every scooter has to have two independent brakes. • The scooter must have lights permitted by the German Federal Government in the same way as for bicycles. • Must have at least one ringing bell or

acoustic horn. • The minimum age for riding an electric scooter is 14 years. • Helmets are mandatory per Army regulation; knee and elbow pads are highly recommended. • The same alcohol limits apply to electric scooter drivers as to car drivers. • Electric scooters are only permitted for one person. This does not change even if two people do not exceed the permissible total weight. • All electric scooters have to have an official operating permit, which usually can be found in the manufacturer’s manual and on the manufacturer’s website. • And most important: Liability insurance is mandatory to ride an e-scooter on German roads. The good news is that the little insurance sticker that serves as proof of insurance is easily obtainable from ADAC, insurance companies and also sold by local banks. This liability insurance is meant for damages caused to third parties by the e-scooter. In

addition, some insurance companies offer the option of taking out voluntary partial coverage insurance for e-scooters. In some German cities, the popular vehicles have now become quite the nuisance. “How many scooters may be on the bottom of the Pegnitz?” Asks city councilor for the Grüne in Nürnberg, Mike Bock, recently. A German newspaper reported that the city of Köln initiated recovery of about 500 e-scooters from the bottom of the Rhine River. U.S. Army Soldiers have also discovered the convenient e-scooters for day-to-day rides across installations and for daily commuting. At Storck Barracks in Illesheim, Regionally Aligned Forces (RAF) Soldiers on deployment status are not allowed to purchase cars. Many Soldiers use the e-scooters to ride from their living quarters in the housing areas to their workplace in the hangars, to the dining facility, and to the fitness center. They increasingly use their e-scooters to ride to the nearby town of Bad Windsheim for shopping and take it on the train as they venture out

on day trips to nearby cities. Steve Borkowski, installation site manager for Storck Barracks, is concerned: “The Soldiers buy these e-scooters off the internet without any knowledge about the legality here in Germany. They are just fun to ride and they have become fairly inexpensive to purchase. I have also seen electric hover boards and alike on post, which are not legal to ride in Germany.” When asked about the legal implications, USAG Ansbach Deputy Director of Emergency Services, Peter Kleen explained: “The e-scooters are so new, there is no USAREUR guideline on the operation of e-scooters on post. Generally, the Deutsche Strassenverkehrsordnung, the German traffic regulation, is applicable on all U.S. Army installations in Germany.” Light electric vehicle riders who do not adhere to the rules as outlined in the Light Electric Vehicles Regulation can be fined up to €2,000 (about US$2,244). PCSing Summer Surge: Busy, stressful, exciting Story and photo by Keith Pannell U.S. Army Rheinland-Pfalz Public Affairs Leaving a job you like in a country you’ve loved might not be easy. And making that move to a different continent can make things more difficult. That’s why Army Materiel Command and Installation Management Command are trying hard to make the process easier. Since January, those expecting to PCS this summer have been told this year’s “Summer Surge” could have challenges on both sides of the Atlantic. “I’ve had no issues with my household goods, shipping the car, lodging or anything, I’ve even been given a sponsor at my new assignment,” said Master Sgt. Latoral Bishop of the U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz religious support office about the clearing process. “The agencies are all different. You can contact some by phone and some by email.” Garrison employee Matt Davis is leaving after seven years. His family is moving five people, two dogs, and two cars. “There are so many balls you have to juggle. It’s stressful. There’s no way to get around that,” Davis said. “[The Civilian Personnel Advisory Center] has been very good to deal with, but the amount of paperwork was incredible. But, it’s just part of the process and everyone has to deal with the same thing.” Once orders are in hand, things started rolling for Bishop and Davis. The 405th Army Field Support Brigade, which handles all PCS moves in the garrison footprint, advises everyone PCSing that as soon as they have orders in hand, run don’t walk to get the process started. Even before airline tickets, the first stop should be the Transportation Movement Office “As soon as you have your orders, come to transportation as quickly as possible,” said Jeffrey Morrison, a transportation specialist with the 405th. “We are taking walk-ins, and you can come to either Daenner Kaserne to get started.” Bishop and Davis said shipping their vehicles proved quick and easy, as long as you have the correct paperwork. Both were able to find temporary lodging for their families and are in the process of clearing out, a process that differs somewhat between military and civilian employees. Both AMC and IMCOM are open about informing all Soldiers and families of the PCS challenges stateside, including moving company delays and more. Davis cautioned those PCSing to understand that while the government may be paying many fees and while there are agencies and functions in place that can assist, moving can still be an expensive venture. “The biggest stress is financial,” he said. “This costs, that costs. It’s easy to start bleeding money, if you’re not careful. Shipping a second car on our own dime, shipping your pets, a rental car, the first and last month’s rent on a home at our destination, things the government doesn’t cover … it all adds up

A German moving company crew loads the worldly possessions of an American U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz employee July 12.

very quickly. People need to understand, and plan for, that.” Bishop said it’s important to remind PCS’ers you have other things to take care of. If you were given government furniture for your home, you’ll need to call the Furniture Management Office to arrange its return. You’ll need flight reservations and lodging on both sides of the PCS. Don’t forget to leave time for cleaning and clearing your house, on-post or off. Finally, both Bishop and Davis said don’t discount the emotional and mental stress a PCS can take on you and your family. “I’ve felt it and seen it in friends,” Davis said. “I’ve been able to talk with friends, family and colleagues to help vent it out. But, you have to realize you need to take care of yourself and your whole family too.”

Strom (Old Channel). Established in 1200, Warnemünde gets its name from being located at the mouth of the Warnow River. To safeguard the city of Rostock’s access to the Baltic Sea, the village of Warnemünde was purchased by Rostock in 1323. During the 19th century, however, Warnemünde shifted from being a quiet fishing village to a popular seaside resort. Either way, it retained all of its charm. Today, Warnemünde is known as Known as Rostock’s leisure paradise and is one of the most popular seaside resorts on the Baltic Sea among both German and foreign tourists. Beaches The beach is over 5 kilometers long and is one of the widest beaches on the Baltic Sea coast. At Warnemünde, visitors will find a 530-meter long pier, white sandy beaches in one area, high banks in another as well as interspersed pebbles. During certain times of the year lifeguards are on duty and beach chair rentals are available. Campfires and grilling at the beach are allowed in specific locations. Beach access is free and parking can be found nearby. Promenade The modern 2-kilometer promenade is very inviting, and not only during the warmer months. A stroll along the promenade is the ideal place to enjoy fresh sea air and stunning views of the Baltic Sea. During the evenings expect to see romantic skies lit up over sand dunes and the sunset reflecting on the water. You will also see swanky beach villas with beautiful historic fishermen’s villas, captains’ houses, shops and restaurants.

Lighthouse Adjacent to the promenade is the lighthouse (built in 1898), which is thought to be the oldest one in the area. Because of its location, the lighthouse is one of the most visited sites of Warnemünde. With its height of 121 feet, it allows visitors to enjoy incredible views of the Baltic Sea as well as the ideal place to watch the arrival and departure of many types of ships, including ferries to Denmark and Sweden. Annually thousands of visitors attend the New Year’s Day celebration “Lighthouse in Flames,” which includes laser lights and music. Teepott (Tea Pot) Warnemünde The second most visited landmark in this area is the Tea Pot, which is an intriguing example of architecture from the East German era. This building, which features a slightly curved roof and is located near the lighthouse, houses restaurants, souvenir shops and an exhibition of

thousands of sea voyage artifacts collected by a 20th century explorer. Heritage Museum Warnemünde The museum is a former fishermen’s house that was built in 1767. It has permanent exhibitions on themes like fishing and seafaring. Visitors can also catch a glimpse of life of Warnemünde at the end of the 19th century with four rooms (kitchen, bedroom, hallway and another room) designed in accordance with historical models. Other focal points include handwork crafts, folk culture, cradle-to-grave customs of Warnemünde, protection of the Baltic Sea coast and more. How to get there By car, Warnemünde is seven hours north of Stuttgart, just over seven hours northeast of Kaiserslautern and slightly less than seven hours northeast of Wiesbaden. Garrison rescues thousands of goldfish found living at military wash rack Lutz Andres scoops goldfish from the water basin near the military wash rack on Rhine Ordnance Barracks, U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz, uly 21. Andres and a colleague rescued thousands of fish from the contaminated water and placed them in an artificial pond.

Stiry and photos by Jason Tudor U.S. Army Rheinland-Pfalz Public Affairs As Dr. Ian Malcom said in Jurassic Park, “Life, uh, finds a way.” In the massive water-recirculation basins at a wash rack located on Rhine Ordnance Barracks, thousands of goldfish swimming around proved Dr. Malcom correct July 21. U.S. Army Garrison RheinlandPfalz employees from the Directorate of Public Works discovered the massive schools of fish during routine cleaning. The basins are deep-cleaned every five years. At the wash rack, Soldiers regularly scrub military vehicles using the water from the basins, filtered, recirculated, and used again. The build-up of sludge — contaminated with oil and lubricants — and other materials precipitates the five-year deep-cleaning and led to the discovery of the fish. “It was a surprise to see so many fish,” said Heinz Werner Rudolf, chief of DPW’s operations and maintenance division. “The fish should not be living and swimming in there at all, and that’s the problem. People need to understand not to dump anything into these basins.” Garrison environmental engineer Dr. Claudia Weber talked about the danger to the fish. “Even if it does not look like it at the first glance, the basins at the wash rack provide a very dangerous and torturing environment for goldfish.

The contaminated sludge is putting the fish’s health at risk, and if the operating rotating pump blades strike a fish or squeeze them, that will cause a slow suffocation and death.” Greg Williams, director of DPW, agreed. “This is a recurring problem we run into each time the basins are deep cleaned and is completely avoidable. We need folks not to dump anything into the water basins. Doing that creates problems and could impair the mission effectiveness of that facility.” The removal of the fish is part and parcel of the garrison’s Integrated Pest Management Program. The program helps sustain infrastructure used for training, working, and living by providing professional guidance to reduce or eliminate impact from all plant, insect, fungus, and vertebrate pests on Soldiers and their families. No one’s quite sure how the fish got into the water; however, officials suspect former Soldiers living in the barracks across the street — who may keep the fish as pets — dumped them before moving away. The fish eventually breed and start crowding the basin. The “Thar Be Whales!” moment for DPW workers turned into an opportunity for them to relocate the fish without harming them. To rescue the fish, workers first drained the basins one at a time. Lutz Andres, from DPW’s pest management, and Konstantin “Konnie” Gross, from the environmental team, then scooped the fish out with pool-cleaning nets and

dumped them into drums filled with clean water. The process took about three hours. Routine repairs ensured the wash rack stayed idle as Gross and Andres undertook the rescue effort. “Since the release of these goldfish in natural waterbodies will negatively impact the natural ecosystem of those waterbodies, a new home had to be found,” Dr. Weber said. So, Gross and Andres hauled the drums to a nearby artificial pond donated by a local community member. They then released the fish, where life continued to, uh, find a way without doing harm to the natural habitats and native species. Dr. Weber stressed the need for people to relocate pets and not abandon them, even fish. “Please think of the future of your flaky, furry or feathery comrades,” she said. “Be on the look out to find friends to take it over as shops or kennels will rarely accept your pet.” She added that pest management’s Andres can also help to find the pet a home. DPW chief Williams said all’s well that ends well for the goldfish.

Lutz Andres pours water and goldfish into an artificial pond ending the journey and helping save thousands of goldfish from life inside the water basin of a military wash rack in Kaiserslautern.
