USAG Rheinland-Pfalz welcomes new commander by Mary Del Rosario U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz The Army’s largest garrison in Europe has a new commander overseeing its 33 sites across its diverse area of responsibility. Colonel Reid E. Furman assumed command of U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz in a ceremony at Pulaski Sports Field, July 22. He takes over an organization with a reach of operations that encompasses facilities and training areas in Germany, Bulgaria and Romania. Furman assumed command of the garrison from Acting Garrison Commander Lt. Col. Jeremy A. McHugh. He accepted the garrison colors from Tommy R. Mize, the Installation Management Command-Europe director and host for the change of command ceremony. Before handing the command colors over to Furman, Mize praised McHugh’s leadership to the garrison. “We all owe a special debt of gratitude to Lt. Col. Jeremy McHugh for his remarkable and selfless service and leadership over the past two years while he served for ASA-Black Sea commander responsible for Army installations in Romania and Bulgaria, but especially so for the past eight months as he simultaneously served as the acting commander of USAG Rheinland-Pfalz,” Mize said. McHugh, in turn, praised Mize for being an “amazing leader” who he enjoyed working with and for. “Thank you for your trust, your confidence and your mentorship,” he added. In addition to lauding the garrison, McHugh also recognized the continued support of host-nation partners. “Together we are not Germans and Americans, but the Rheinland-Pfalz military community. I thank you for the care you have for the wellbeing of our Soldiers, civilians, family members and your partnership in everything we do,” said McHugh.

Before signing off as the commander for one last time, McHugh wished Furman well in his new role. “You are joining a marvelous team. From what I have seen thus far, you will take the team to the next level and they will benefit from your leadership,” said McHugh. A native of Sunbury, Pennsylvania, Furman graduated from the U.S. Military Academy in West Point, New York, where he was commissioned as an armor officer in May 2000. He draws upon experience from a variety of duty and leadership positions to include deputy for operations, 1st Special Forces Command (Airborne), executive officer to the commanding general, NATO Special Operations Component Command Afghanistan/Special Operations Joint Task ForceAfghanistan, and commander of Support Battalion, 1st Special Warfare Training Group, U.S.

John F. Kennedy Special Warfare Center and School at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. Having earned a master’s degree from the University of Kansas and a bachelor of science degree from West Point, Furman’s military education includes the Army War College, the Command and General Staff School, the Special Forces Qualification Course, the Combined Arms Staff Service School, the Armor Captains Career Course and the Armor Officer Basic Course. “The success of our mission here rests on the relationships that we build with our hostnation partners,” Furman said in his acceptance remarks. “I’m honored to see so many of our German community and military leaders here today.” “We are truly excited to be here and thankful for the opportunity to lead this Garrison. Together you have built this team, and I am honored to join you,” he added.

ENERGY TIP OF THE WEEK With high summer temperatures and rare availability of air-conditioning, here are a few tips to keep your house cool: »» Open your windows in the early morning and late evening (or even at night) to let cool air into the house. Opening doors and windows to cross air is also an option. »» Put down the rolladen and/or blinds and close the windows as soon as the outside air gets warmer than inside. »» Using an upright fan and positioning a damp cloth or towel, for example on the back side of a chair, about a foot in front of the fan, will also help cool down the room. Stay cool and enjoy the summer, winter will be here sooner than you think.

Building future with innovative manufacturing Story and photos by Airman 1st Class Madelyn Keech 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Airmen assigned to the 86th Maintenance Squadron created the Air Force’s first Additive Manufacturing Team through the Hercules Innovation Lab in February. The nine-person team tackles supply chain issues, saving time and money by using reverse-engineering and 3D-printers to create replacement parts and new devices to assist units across Ramstein. “3D-printing a simple part could save thousands of dollars,” said U.S. Air Force Master Sgt. Kyle Shoup, 86th MXS Air Force Repair Enhancement Program manager. “The printing filament only costs about $25 for 2.2 pounds of material, or 33 cubic inches.” (Right) 3D-printed unexploded ordnances made for training purposes sit on a table at the Hercules Innovation Lab at Ramstein Air Base, July 8. Members of the Additive Manufacturing Team at Ramstein designed 3D-printed UXOs for Explosive Ordnance Disposal technicians to use as training aids.

U.S. Air Force Tech. Sgt. Aaron Barnes, 86th Maintenance Squadron aircraft metals technology craftsman, previews a file to 3D print at Ramstein Air Base, July 21. Barnes, a member of the Additive Manufacturing Team, 3D-printed a maze for training with a boroscope, a small device with a camera and light used to inspect small spaces such as an aircraft engine.

The team’s goal is to help units with supply issues by fixing broken, missing or damaged equipment. For example, the team 3D-printed replacement knobs for an aircraft radio to repair it instead of buying a new radio. “One great advantage of 3D-printing is the unlimited amount of already-created parts we can get from open-source websites,” said Tech. Sgt. Justin Woody, 86th MXS aircraft metals technology noncommissioned

officer in charge. “These websites enable us to help the customer rapidly by cutting out the hours of prototyping it takes to get something to fit just right.” The Additive Manufacturing Team builds training aids or new tools to make day-to-day operations easier. Recently, the team created a device for the 86th Medical Group to mount medical biohazard waste bins to walls, making them more difficult to knock over and improving safety in medical workspaces. “Our innovation is different because we can produce immediate results,” said Tech. Sgt. Aaron Barnes, 86th MXS aircraft metals technology craftsman. “If something is broken and nobody has figured out how to fix it for years, we can come in and have something within a couple of hours, days or a week at the longest. We can utilize a 3D-printer, a waterjet machine or a computer numerical control to use metal and plastics together to make a product.” In a changing world, Airmen must come up with new, innovative ideas to maintain the world’s greatest Air Force. The team meets at the Hercules Innovation Lab every Friday at 12:15 p.m. Interested members of Team Ramstein are able to attend the meetings to ask questions, submit a request, or join the team.

During the training, the air advisors encouraged Romanians to share any knowledge or information about their respective arresting systems. “It’s equally important that we receive information from our Romanian partners,” said Capt. The Romanian air force was eager to learn and share their knowledge as well. “By completing this course we not only acquire new knowledge, skill, and abilities that allow us to perform operations and carry out necessary actions with varying degrees of complexity regarding the maintenance and repair of equipment, but we also accumulate specific knowledge and train the skills necessary for the use and maintenance of technical means,” said Romanian air force Warrant Officer 2nd Class Liviu Hapenciuc,

The air advisors are a unique team of qualified multi-capable Airmen who support the United Stated in Europe with Security Force Assistance engagements. “If you asked anyone in our unit what an advisor does, the answer would be different from each one because we all work in different lanes,” said LaChance. “We all have the basic knowledge required to transfer capabilities to other nations.” Air advisors not only work with partner nations to develop their aviation enterprises but also to bolster partnerships with U.S. allies and partners. By leading and participating in multiple partnership events each year, the air advisors play a special role in enhancing relationships across the continent. “Air advisors help strengthen the theater,” said LaChance. “NATO’s whole platform is that we are stronger together. Nearly 45 Soldiers stationed at Rhine Ordnance Barracks and Sembach Kaserne participated in the weekly U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz’s Army Substance Abuse Program training on resiliency Tuesday. Since June 7, members of ASAP’s prevention team have been providing short sessions to Soldiers from 167th Medical Augmentation Detachment; 512th Field Hospital, Headquarters, Headquarters Company; and, 519th Hospital Center, Headquarters, Headquarters Detachment. ASAP’s Raegan Patrick-Mudd and James Honeycutt led Tuesday’s training. For this type of training, ASAP use small sessions – or “R2 Nuggets,” resiliency talks that last about 15-20 minutes, according to Patrick-Mudd. Each talk can be on anything from mindful breathing techniques to avoiding thinking traps. Honeycutt said offering a robust series of trainings as opposed to one longer annual training session is effective. “Think of it like medicine, exercise or dieting,” said Honeycutt. “I don’t exercise hard for only two days a year and expect results.” Soldiers and units are responding. “Oftentimes Soldiers will come up to me after a training and talk about how the training impacted them personally. They may not have necessarily felt comfortable sharing what they share with me with the entire group,” Honeycutt said. “We also often are asked

to come back and provide more trainings or longer trainings on one of our R2 nuggets.” Patrick-Mudd noted that the nugget sessions are quick and analog by design. “The sessions are meant to be short and without technology intimate,” she said. Tuesday’s session focused on personal character strengths and how those strengths can be used to strengthen not only oneself but also strengthen a team. The Soldiers were handed a list of 24 strengths and were asked to rate each one. Soldiers then took a couple minutes to discuss with a buddy on why he or she may have ranked open-mindedness, humor, self-regulation over forgiveness, wisdom, or hope, for example. After the buddy talk, PatrickMudd and Honeycutt led a group discussion on how focusing on personal qualities could strengthen their team. One Soldier took a different approach to reach his conclusion. “I need to understand my own blind spots and build on those characteristics,” said one Soldier assigned to the 167th MAD. After some discussion,

Patrick-Mudd said the ability to look within oneself and to act on that introspection is a strength. She said it’s these type of discussions she wants to bring to these sessions. “One of our main goals is to create dialogue in a safe space where people feel comfortable articulating their feelings and thoughts,” said Patrick-Mudd. “In the day to day, our Soldiers do not really have ample opportunities for that type of exchange, and therefore one of the intents of these sessions is to provide a platform for introspection.” Next week, ASAP has arranged representatives from Army Community Service’s financial readiness section to help Soldiers ensure they have the tools they need for financial health. The Soldiers will complete their series of training in September. Any unit or individual seeking ASAP guidance can call DSN 5411500 in KMC or DSN 531-3143 in Baumholder. The event allowed the Air Force and U.S. Air Forces in Europe–Air Forces Africa to integrate and engage with hundreds of Airmen from 31 nations, and about 200,000 visitors during the three-day military air show. Secretary of the Air Force Frank Kendall, U.S. Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. CQ Brown, Jr., U.S. Space Force Chief of Space Operations Gen. John W. “Jay” Raymond, and USAFE-AFAF Commander Gen. James Hecker were able to engage numerous counterparts from across the globe as well. “I’ve had the opportunity to talk with several of our allies here, because they are all coalesced in one area here at RIAT,” Hecker said. “We need to continue to work together to ensure our systems are designed to share information. As allies and partners, we need to be able to operate off a common operating picture.” “My biggest priority is to continue to build our partnerships across Europe and Africa,” Hecker continued. “Here in Europe, the F-35 is poised to be the backbone of many allied nations’ air forces and that provides great avenues for integration in the defense of our common values.” A U.S. F-35 Lightning II from the 48th Fighter Wing at RAF Lakenheath was on display while a U.K. F-35 performed for the crowd, highlighting the importance of F-35s to interoperability in Europe. Currently, there are approximately 120 F-35s in Europe across six countries. By the 2030s, it is expected that there will be more

than 600 F-35s integrating together from more than 10 countries across the continent, including two full U.S. F-35 squadrons at RAF Lakenheath. “It’s great to be able to fly the F-35 alongside our partners,” said U.S. Air Force Maj. David Bown, 495th Fighter Squadron F-35 instructor pilot. “I’ve had the opportunity to fly with Norwegian, UK, Italian and Dutch F-35s. As more F-35s come into the-

ater, we will have a very integrated air combat capability in Europe.” The Royal Air Force also highlighted and celebrated the U.S. Air Force’s 75th Anniversary this year with a showcase of U.S. Air Force fighter aircraft including the F-35, two F-16 Fighting Falcons, and an F-15E Strike Eagle from bases across Europe. USAFE is also celebrating its 80th anniversary this year, calling

back to the start of USAFE’s predecessor Eighth Air Force in 1942 in the U.K. Also standing out at the air show was an E-4B National Airborne Operations Center, which provides highly survivable command, control and communications for U.S. military leadership to be able to direct military action through crisis.

Its presence at RIAT marks the first overseas airshow the E-4B has ever joined. Also participating were two U.S. refuelers, a KC-135 Stratotanker and a KC-46 Pegasus, as well as two special operations aircraft, the CV-22 Osprey and the MC-130J Commando II. Lastly, the U-2 Dragon Lady was on display highlighting its longevity.

ienvenidos a nuestra Iglesia!

Airlifter of the Month: Always ready

U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Joshua Brown, 86th Aeromedical Evacuation Squadron medical material noncommissioned officer in charge, stands with litter stations at Ramstein Air Base, July 21. Brown is one of two logisticians overseeing 75 aeronautical evacuation crew members.

Story and photos by Airman 1st Class Lauren Jacoby 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Joshua Brown, 86th Aeromedical Evacuation medical material noncommissioned officer in charge, was recognized by Brig. Gen. Otis C. Jones, 86th Airlift Wing commander, as Airlifter of the Month during a coining ceremony at Ramstein Air Base, July 21. Brown grew up in Libertyville, Ill, where he met his childhood best friend. After finishing high school his best friend’s dad inspired both of them to join the Air Force. “His dad was a major in the

Army and advocated for us to enlist,” said Brown. “He said, ’Take advantage of it, you guys need some discipline in your life and you will get to finish your schooling for free’.” Brown aspired to follow through with that advice, and said his main goal right now is to finish his master’s degree in engineering or business acquisitions. After that, he plans to see where the Air Force takes him. In his free time, Brown enjoys going to the gym. He makes an effort to work out every day. He also enjoys spending time outdoors hiking with his dog, watching thriller movies, or reading historical books.

U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Joshua Brown (center), 86th Aeromedical Evacuation Squadron medical material noncommissioned officer in charge, stands with Brig. Gen. Otis C. Jones, 86th Airlift Wing commander (left), and 86th Airlift Wing Command Chief Master Sgt. Charmaine Kelley, (right), at Ramstein Air Base, July 21. Brown received Jones’ first coin since taking command.

Since being stationed at Ramstein, Brown has fit in with his squadron well. Brown’s advice is to always help others. “Make sure that when you come to work, come in with your head held high, make sure that you’re doing your job and helping others,” he said, “That is the biggest thing for me. If you see somebody that needs something, make sure that you do something to help them.” Brown was awarded Airlifter of the Month for his continued efforts to better the base and contribute to his team. “He is outgoing and loves to encourage people,” said Capt. Lindsay Frazier, 86th Aeromedical

Evacuation Squadron readiness and logistics officer in charge. “He loves people and wants to make sure everyone is included, and that we’re doing things to make everyone feel welcome.” Brown serves 75 aeronautical evacuation crew members, and ensures $5.1 million dollars in medical supplies and equipment are always ready. He was recognized for leading a basewide clean-up initiative, guiding 45 members to remove over 20 bags of waste from in and around the facility. His actions contributed to Ramstein Air Base being selected for the 2022 Commander in Chief’s Award for Installation Excellence.

“He has a passion for helping people and taking care of what needs to be done,” said Frazier. “With him, very little supervision is needed. When Brown sees something that needs to be done, he goes out and does it.” Brown also worked to secure an additional seven pieces of in-flight equipment worth $222,000, at no additional cost to the unit. He also worked with Aircraft Maintenance to resolve an oxygen filling issue, which saved $50,000 and 100 man hours annually. In honor of these efforts, Brig. Gen. Otis Jones, 86th Airlift Wing commander, presented his coin to Brown in his first coining ceremony since taking command.

by USAFE-AFAFRICA Public Affairs Service members from the U.S. military and allied nations came together for a European Partnership Flight event, the Radar and Sensor Visibility and Integration Workshop co-hosted by U.S. Forces in Europe and Air Forces Africa and the Bulgarian Armed Forces, July 11-14. The weeklong event brought

together representatives from U.S. European Command, U.S. Naval Forces Europe, and USAFE, along with allies from Bulgaria, Romania, Slovakia, to discuss the way ahead to establish a USAFE-led Mission Partner Environment network that enables closer collaboration between Joint Domain Command and Control units and connects radars/sensors between nations to enhance the shared air picture.

Service members from the U.S. military and allied nations came together for a European Partnership Flight event, the Radar and Sensor Visibility and Integration Workshop co-hosted by U.S. Forces in Europe and Air Forces Africa and the Bulgarian Armed Forces, July 11-14.

The workshop focused on the tasks required to fuse data from the participant’s organic radars to create an enduring and integrated air picture, and was in support of a Significant Security Cooperation Initiative to develop a robust C2 network that supports NATO and allied forces. “Over the past year we have been working closely with our partners. This event was Critical to the next step of our mutual cooperation and we are looking forward to future training with our allies,” said Lt. Col. Joey Faraone, Commander 606 Air Control Squadron. This multilateral military-tomilitary engagement and security assistance event is intended to strengthen U.S. strategic partnerships with key countries in Europe and enhance regional cooperation and interoperability. “This particular event enabled for all involved parties to establish common understanding of the initiative, and to set milestones for the way ahead,” Col. Yuriy Lukanov, Deputy Chief of Staff – Operations, Bulgarian Air Force said. “In order to be successful in a future fight, we have to be able to bring these capabilities to bear seamlessly with our own.” As a result of the workshop the intent is participating members will be able to demonstrate regional

enduring redundant voice and data sharing capability from each participating nation’s Air Operations Center to/from all other participating AOCs via direct connections. This capability will be tested during exercises such as Astral Knight. “Accelerating change to win the next fight must be inclusive of our Allies and Partners, they bring sensor and data sharing capacity to support Air Component

Mission/Force Generation in CDO and cruise missile threat environments. Said a spokesperson from USAFE Plans and Requirements, “EPF events like this week’s efforts are essential in the Counter Air / ABAD mission areas.” U.S. Forces in Europe will use the results of the workshop to prepare its personnel and Allies help attain more increased Joint All Domain Command and Control awareness.

US armored unit equipment arrives at port of Antwerp-Bruges

U.S. Army Lt. Col. J.D. Tillman, commander of the 838th Transportation Battalion, briefs Soldiers in front of ARC Integrity before they unload and stage equipment belonging to 3rd Armored Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division in the port of Antwerp-Bruges, Belgium, July 21. by Maj. Vonnie Wright 21st Theater Sustainment Command ANTWERP, Belgium — Armor, Joint Light Tactical Vehicles and equipment from the 3rd Armored Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division, began arriving at the port in Antwerp-Bruges, Belgium, July 21, as the unit began its deployment to Europe. The Brigade will move approximately 4,200 Soldiers and 2,700 equipment items into the European theater to replace the 1st Armored Brigade, 3rd Infantry Division, which is returning to the United States. The brigade’s deployment demonstrates the U.S. Army’s unrelenting commitment to Europe and its NATO allies in response to the invasion of Ukraine. The initial equipment arrived aboard the commercial cargo vessel, ARC Integrity, following its journey across the Atlantic Ocean from the port in Corpus Christi, Texas. A “Team of Teams” made up of transportation, logistics and support professionals from the 21st Theater Sustainment Command, 598th Transportation Brigade and units from the Belgian Armed Forces, worked closely together to coordinate the reception, staging and onward movement of equipment at the port. a long tradition of supporting U.S. Army forces. “The Army has successfully and safely deployed equipment for brigade-sized elements through the port in Antwerp-Bruges for many years now,” said Lt. Col. J.D. Tillman, commander, 838th Transportation Battalion. “It is one of the most capable ports in the world and we have an excellent partnership at the port with our Belgian Allies. Given the professionalism of its workforce and access to onward movement transportation modes like rail, commercial linehaul trucking and barge, Antwerp remains a strategically vital seaport both for the U.S. Army and for our NATO Allies.” Approximately 300 U.S. Army Soldiers and civilians operate from the port to execute the safe and efficient discharge of the brigade’s equipment from vessels arriving into Antwerp-Bruges and to further coordinate the upload and movement of that equipment to locations in Europe via rail, commercial line-haul trucking and by barge. It is more than just equipment and systems, it is about processes and relationships as well,” said Lt. Col. Matthew Rivera, 39th Transportation Battalion commander. “These port operations allow us to stand side-by-side with our Belgian Allies to achieve tactical, operational, and strategic objectives. These extremely important partnerships during port operations help us facilitate the reception, staging, onward movement, and integration of forces and equipment in the European theater.” The 260th Movement Control Team, 39th Transportation Battalion treasures these partnerships as it enhances their ability to conduct operations as they prepare for the largest onward movement at this port in 21st TSC history. first leadership position on a port assignment, the partnerships and relationships he’s established are important to his success. “The team here is an amalgamation of 1ICTC (1st Inland Cargo Transfer Company), 627th Movement Control Team, SDDC, Belgian partners and us,” said Mains. “We barely knew each other and we all came together as a team to get it done, and really enjoy each other. It’s a good feeling.” After training for many months, 3rd ABCT Soldiers based at Fort Hood were ready to begin their deployment. “It’s really about leader engagement before this deployment and here now at the port,” said Maj. Eric Yost, squadron executive officer, 3rd Squadron, 8th Cavalry, 3rd Armored Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division. “The integration with the SDDC and MCT helped us to refine our planning and methods

of execution. They gave us a lot of feedback and the partnership has been great. We are ready to move from here and get to work.” The 3rd ABCT’s deployment is a one-for-one unit replacement with the 1st ABCT, 3rd ID, which leaves the Army’s overall force posture in the region unchanged. The ability to deploy an armored brigade combat team from Fort Hood to Europe demonstrates the capability of the U.S. global deployment and distribution enterprise, along with the Army’s ability to conduct strategic movement into and across the theater in support of a wide range of operations and missions. 21 TSC Soldier recognized for quality service, leadership

Staff Sgt. Eric Lee received the U.S. Army Europe-Africa Frederick E. Vollrath Human Resources Award for Excellence for his work and leadership at the 21st Theater Sustainment Command G1. by Sgt. Katelyn Myers 21st Theater Sustainment Command Staff Sgt. Eric Lee considers being the plans and operations noncommissioned officer in charge at 1st Human Resource Sustainment Center, 21st Theater Sustainment Command, a blessing. He appreciates being surrounded by great leaders. The Newport, Arkansas, native was recognized for his own leadership skills and commitment to quality service this July, when he received the U.S. Army EuropeAfrica Frederick E. Vollrath Human Resources Award for Excellence. “Staff Sgt. Lee embodies the mantra [to] accomplish the mission and preserve the welfare of his Soldiers,” said Sgt. Maj. Brian Jeffers, 1st HRSC. “His performance has been commensurate with a senior noncommissioned officer while serving in a myriad of positions within the 21st TSC HR community.” Lee graduated with a bachelor’s degree in physical education from the University of Arkansas Pine Bluff in 2011. He was looking to advance his career path when he joined the Army in March, 2013. While assigned to the 21st TSC G1, Lee quickly assimilated and became an integral com-

ponent of the G1 staff, which is why Jeffers nominated him for the Vollrath Award. Lee will go on to compete in a centralized Army Adjutant General school board for AG/HR Corps NCO of the year. Other award categories include regimental officer, junior warrant officer, junior enlisted, civilian employee and senior civilian employee of the year. “Not only has Staff Sgt. Lee proven his technical proficiency; he has dedicated countless hours to teach, coach, and mentor junior Soldiers,” said Jeffers. “He performs volunteer work throughout the Kaiserslautern Military Community footprint and displays the principles of the Vollrath HR Award for Excellence.” Lee said he is grateful for the opportunity to serve and is committed to being the best NCO he can be. “The Army has taken care of me and my family for the past nine years,” said Lee. “We have traveled across the country, to places I could have never imagined to visit if I hadn’t joined the military.” Lee said he intends to continue to lead by example, and learn from his peers by taking in any advice to help him in the future.

Need for speed requires intense training by Janet A. Aker Military Health System Communications

the pilots have to tread water with all their gear on and manually inflate the life preserver.

This summer’s blockbuster movie showcases some amazing feats by military aviators, pushing the envelope beyond 10 Gs and incredible combat maneuvers. But, initial military aviation training focuses not just on the Gs, but learning to control an aircraft, while also understanding the physiology of acceleration forces on the body. Being able to maneuver an aircraft while withstanding high levels of gravitational forces, or G-forces, is a key component to training for combat aviation. But mishap prevention and survival, and enhancing and sustaining performance all play a role. If you’ve ever been on a rollercoaster, you’ve felt a minimal amount of the G-forces and the effects the acceleration that aviators experience. For military aviators, their training requires that they learn how to deal with sometimes severe G-forces and negative G-forces that change rapidly, especially in combat operations. Those G-forces affect all aviators to some degree, whether they fly fixed wings, jets, turboprop aircraft or helicopters.

Nutrition and exercise to optimize performance The military trainers teach aviators about proper nutrition and exercise to optimize performance. “Much like maintaining an aircraft, it’s maintaining your body,” Welsh said. “If you don’t give your body the proper amount of fuel, the right types of fuel, meaning calories, or the right types of food groups, pilots’ bodies will not be able to stand up to a barrage of high G-force maneuvers,” he said. Low blood glucose levels can also impact G-force performance, Sauls said. Proper hydration and enough sleep to combat fatigue are also necessary, because human factors are the biggest cause for aviation mishaps, Welsh said. The Air Force relies on lower body and core strength training. That means “we’re going to think heavier weight, lower repetitions. Things like squats, lunges, and deadlifts really build up that base, improve that frame,” Sauls said. “And then from a cardiovascular standpoint, to best mirror the operational environment, we would lean more toward high-intensity interval training, sprint intervals, circuit training, only get a heart rate up for a short period, then rest and repeat.” Some bases are now hiring dietitians and conditioning coaches, Sauls added. The 19th Air Force at Joint Base San Antonio-Randolph, which oversees Air Force pilot training, has created formal instruction on how pilots can improve their diet and exercise. The Army Aviation Center of Excellence is the Army Aviation Branch’s training and development center, located at Fort Rucker, Alabama. USAACE trains and develops “agile and adaptive” Army aviators, manages the aviation enterprise, and “integrates aviation capabilities and requirements across the warfighting functions to enable commanders and soldiers on the ground to fight and win in an increasingly complex world.”

G-forces Military aviators first learn the basics of the flight physiology and its impact on the human cardiovascular system during the lecture portion of their training with aerospace physiology personnel. Next, these aviators learn how to avoid or overcome what is called G-induced loss of consciousness, also known as GLOC. “That’s when the blood leaves your brain. After about five seconds, you’re lights out,” said Navy Cmdr. Timothy Welsh, who is the director of the Aviation Survival Training Center, Naval Air Station Pensacola, Florida, part of the Naval Survival Training Institute. To combat GLOC, military aviators learn the anti-G straining maneuver, which is a series of isometric abdominal and leg muscle contractions that help to keep blood flowing up toward the heart and brain and not downward.

Aviation Boatswain’s Mate (Equipment) 2nd Class Kayla Pettit, from Charlotte, N.C., signals an F/A-18E Super Hornet, assigned to the “Vigilantes” of Strike Fighter Squadron (VFA) 151, as it launches from the flight deck of the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72) June 21. Aviators are also taught breathing techniques that are a primary method of resisting GLOC. In the Navy, aviators are taught the Hick maneuver. The term alludes to the sounds the pilot makes while saying the word Hick as they breathe in and out. The Air Force also teaches a respiratory component, which means “every three seconds, we’re going to do a rapid half-second exchange of air where we want to move the equal amount of air out and right back in,” explained Air Force Maj. Stuart Sauls, who is the acceleration training branch chief in the Air Force Research Laboratory, 711th Human Performance Wing at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, Ohio. “We want pilots to do a very calm breath hold because that allows them to control their air and their chest pressure much better,” said Sauls. In the respiratory component, “air exchanges briefly drop pressure around the heart to allow for that blood flow to continue properly,” he said. “Then pilots have to get that air right back in and block it back off in the lungs so that we can get pressure back because, if they don’t, they can lose consciousness.” Pressure suits are another way for aviators to reduce the amount

of blood going into their extremities under G-forces. These are worn on the lower limbs and the abdomen. Pressure suits also have a “tactile function” as they start to inflate, Welsh explained. Training includes centrifuges In the Air Force, undergraduate pilots begin flight training on the T-6 single prop airplane - so they can experience moderate G-forces. The next step is the T-38 trainer for fighter aircraft. Before pilots can train in that aircraft they go to AFRL in Dayton for tests of exposure to severe G-forces at the only DOD human-rated centrifuge. The centrifuge can produce up to nine Gs, or nine times the normal force of gravity, to measure the student’s ability to counteract the effects of G-forces to prevent GLOC. Jet aviators must be able to sustain sudden changes in pressure and altitude at speeds approaching or exceeding the speed of sound and gravitational forces up to nine times the normal pull (9Gs). If an Air Force student aviator is assigned to F-15s, F-16s, F-22s or F-35s, they go back to Wright-Patterson AFB for more centrifuge training qualification. Naval aviators get centrifuge testing at Brooks City Base in San Antonio,

Texas. That centrifuge can produce more than seven-and-a-half Gs with various onset rates, Welsh said. Both the Air Force and Navy also have a “low fidelity simulator” that connects an aviator’s oxygen mask to a box “that scrubs oxygen out of the air they’re breathing, and increases the amount of nitrogen they’re breathing. They become hypoxic, meaning they lack of adequate oxygen levels to perform,” Welsh explained. The pilots learn emergency procedures to overcome various physiological episodes that could cause incapacitation. Water survival training The highest risk training done by the Navy is water survival training, Welsh said. That is a whole day of learning how to prevent panic and to stay calm in extreme situations. “The primary objective of our water survival training is water comfort and controlling your fear,” Welsh said. In the water, instructors flip aviators upside down, blindfold them in a dunker while they’re in their full gear – flight suits, boots, survival helmets, and a life preserver. The aviators also learn swimming strokes, and how to hold on to reference points. One of the most difficult training drills is when their life preserver fails to inflate, Welsh said. In that situation,

Skilled military soccer players are Air Force officers

The U.S. Armed Forces Women’s Soccer Team poses for a photo after beating team Belgium 8-0 at Union Stadium in Spokane, WA, July 11.

Story and photos by David Vergun Department of Defense News Two Air Force captains have much in common. Both fly in F-15 fighter jets; both are on the U.S. Armed Forces Women’s Soccer Team; and both said what attracted them to the Air Force and soccer the most is teamwork and camaraderie. The team competed in the 13th World Military Women’s Football Championship, which ran from July 11-22 in Spokane, Washington. The event was hosted by nearby Fairchild Air Force Base. Air Force Capt. Jen Gillette Air Force Capt. Jen Gillette, #21 defender, is an F-15 pilot assigned to Seymour Air Force Base, North Carolina’s 333rd Fighter Squadron. Gillette said part of the attraction of a military career was being

exposed to military life growing up. Her father served in the Coast Guard for 30 years, and the family moved around a lot. Initially, Gillette had the idea of being a veterinarian because she likes animals. Then, she changed her mind and decided on pre-med. But that didn’t sound as interesting and adventurous as going really fast in a fighter jet, she said. The fighter pilot is sure she made the right choice and has decided to make it a career. In 2020, she flew her F-15 over the skies of Iraq and Syria in support of U.S. Central Command missions. Gillette graduated from Florida Tech and joined the Air Force in 2014, earning her wings in 2016. Air Force Capt. Angela Karamanos Air Force Capt. Angela Karamanos, #24 midfielder, is an F-15 weapons systems officer, who sits

in the back seat of an F-15 and fires weapons and sometimes helps navigate when needed. She is assigned to Mountain Home Air Force Base, Idaho’s 389th Thunderbolts Fighter Squadron. After graduating from the U.S. Air Force Academy, Karamanos was commissioned in 2018 and earned her wings in 2020. Karamanos said she and her brother grew up loving sports, but she gravitated to soccer as she found it interesting and exciting. She noted that teamwork and camaraderie in the Air Force extends not just to the pilots and other officers, but also to enlisted personnel, such as the mechanics. It’s like a big family, she added. Karamanos’ Air Force service is until 2026. She isn’t sure if she’ll stay in and currently doesn’t have plans for a career outside the Air Force. She said she still has a few years left to think about it and wants to make the decision that is best for her. About the competition The U.S. team competed against teams from Belgium, Cameroon, Canada, France, Germany, Ireland, Mali, Netherlands and South Korea. Each year, the International Military Sports Council hosts World Military Championships in 26 sports on international and regional levels. The World Military Women’s Football Championship is one of them. KAISERSLAUTERN

TRIBERG from Page 1 for its beautiful countryside as well as cuckoo clocks. While living in Germany, a visit to this beautiful town should not go amiss.

TRIBERG HIGHLIGHTS

Black Forest Museum The Black Forest Museum is in Triberg and has the largest collection of barrel organs in Europe. There are also wood carvings and traditional costumes on display. Maria in der Tanne Church This Baroque church, which is just outside of Triberg, was a place of pilgrimage and built at the beginning of the 18th century. The legend attached to this church dates back to 1644. It is said that a young girl was cured of an eye disease by the water from a nearby spring. The following year a local tailor was cured of leprosy at the same place. In gratitude he put a small statue of the Virgin Mary in a hole in a tree, and this is how the church got its name ‘Mary in the Tree.’ Next to the church (which has an elaborate high altar) you will find the Mesnerhäuschen (the sacristan’s house), a small half-tim-

bered building that is the second oldest house in Triberg. It dates back to 1697.

World’s biggest cuckoo clock

Europe’s biggest cuckoo clock It seems that everywhere you go in Triberg you see cuckoo clocks. If you wish to buy one as a souvenir, then head for Oli’s Schnitzstube or the House of a 1,000 clocks, where you will find hand-carved cuckoo clocks of superior quality. You will also find Europe’s biggest cuckoo clock here – you can’t miss it! Nature Discovery Park (Naturerlebnispark) This is a great place to take children who can romp and play in natural surroundings. There is also a stage where cultural events are held against the backdrop of the beautiful Black Forest, with seating for around 300 people. Burggarten At one time there was a castle in Triberg, although it no longer exists. The castle was built during the 13th century. However the castle gardens are now open to visitors and you can have a look at the ruins, which are all that remain of the castle. The gardens are perfect if you need to rest after a hard day of walking around Triberg on a shopping expedition.

Holzgeschnitzter Rathaussaal The carved wooden council chamber is a masterpiece, with its depictions of Black Forest life. It is open to the public from 8:30 until 12:30 Mondays to Fridays and from Monday to Thursday it is open from 2 p.m. until 4 p.m.

EATING AND DRINKING IN TRIBERG

Bergseestuble Inn This is a restaurant located at Cl.-Maria-Hofbauer-Str. 19 and

it is great for meals or simply coffee and cakes. Try the venison goulash for a change of taste, and don’t forget to try a slice of real Black Forest Gateau! La Cascata Ristorantino Café Bar This café-bar serves very good Italian cuisine and is centrally located at Haupstrasse, 83. This place is great for pasta and pizza (and ice cream) and makes a pleasant change from German meals.

Tresor Restaurant The Tresor Restaurant is also on Hauptstrasse at number 63. The dining room used to be a bank vault, so the interior is different to that of the usual restaurants. The beer and fish and chips are particularly recommended. Getting there By car, Triberg is approximately 3 hours from Kaiserslautern and Wiesbaden, and 1.5 hours from Stuttgart. Please check the Deutsche Bahn website for train options.

Due to regulations to prevent the spread of COVID-19, bookings and trips may be cancelled or postponed, and travel to neighboring countries may not be allowed. Please verify the status before making plans to attend. For U.S. government employees, including service members, remember to always follow command regulations, which may be different than host nation policies.
