NATO forces partner for Thracian Summer Story and photos by Senior Airman Nicole Keim 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs PLOVDIV, Bulgaria — Three U.S. Air Force C-130J Super Hercules aircraft and approximately 70 personnel from the 86th Airlift Wing deployed July 10 to Plovdiv, Bulgaria, to participate in exercise Thracian Summer 2016. During the two-week forward training deployment, the 37th Airlift Squadron conducted tactical flight training, which included low-level flights, airdrop training with partnered forces and other related training events. The exercises help preserve joint readiness, build interoperability and strengthen relationships with NATO allies. “It’s an incredible display of the work ethic and drive of our Airmen,” said U.S. Air Force Capt. Christopher Scott, 37 AS pilot. “It is imperative to be able to integrate with multiple agencies within the (European Command) and operate in a moment’s notice with our NATO partners.” Through strengthened relationships and consistent train-

86th Dental Squadron prevents, restores, develops, deploys

COMMENTARY

by Tech. Sgt. Elizabeth Cintron 86th Dental Squadron Here at the 86th Dental Squadron, our mission is to prevent, restore, develop and deploy. We consist of 134 personnel representing the largest dental clinic in U.S. Air Forces Europe. We service the local KMC and several geographically separated units. Needless to say we are very busy treating our active-duty service members, their family members and retirees on a spaceavailable basis. Our leadership advocates prevention via education. We provide several monthly and quarterly briefings to squadrons identified as having a higher incident of cavities and tobacco use. Some of you may have seen us at the Bundles for Babies briefs sponsored by the Airman and Family Readiness Center and the Air Force Aid Society. If you have

children here at Ramstein, they may have come home talking about the dentist who visited them at school. We believe knowledge is a powerful preventive tool. Despite our busy workload, we make time to reach out to the local community. We have hosted several events over the past year to include “Little Teeth Big Smiles” and a recent Retiree Appreciation Day. At these events, we provide evaluations, cleanings and, when possible, simple fillings to repair broken and decayed teeth. At our children’s event, we treated 96 patients and saved families $25,000 in outof-pocket expenses. During our retiree day in June, we were able to see 85 retirees and give back to service members that paved the way for us. Our unit believes strongly in developing our Airmen. We have had several Airmen meet some impressive milestones

in the past year. One squadron member was selected as the USAFE Airman of the Year; another earned status as a Certified Dental Technician with a specialty in ceramics, a certification that currently only two Airmen hold across the whole Air Force; and two members received highly competitive scholarships to attend dental hygiene school. Lastly, our main mission is readiness and ensuring the wing is ready to deploy at a moment’s notice. We provide an average of 800 dental exams and cleanings per month. We send dental teams to geographically separated units such as Morón Air Base, Spain, to provide dental care for personnel stationed there. At the 86th Dental Squadron, we take our mission of prevention, restoration, development and readiness seriously. Eli Young Band visits Ramstein, performs for KMC Story and photo by Airman 1st Class Lane T. Plummer 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs

The Eli Young Band visited the KMC July 15 and 16. The band visited after Ramstein Pizza Hut and the KMC won the “Wing-A-Palooza” challenge, a challenge for all overseas military installations’ Pizza Huts to produce the most wings amongst its peers. According to Mike Eli, the band’s lead singer, transitioning into the community has been easy. “You all have been very accommodating,” Eli said. “We just flew in the night before, and being able to meet so many friendly faces waiting to greet us is humbling.” The band toured the KMC, including Landstuhl Regional Medical Center and the flight simulator on Ramstein. After their tour, the band put on a show for KMC members July 16. According to Airman 1st Class Alex Carson, 86th Security Forces Squadron member, the band was riveting. “I had the time of my life out here,” Carson said. “The band was so lively onstage. I felt like they really were just playing their hearts out. The fact that they were also visiting my base felt so surreal.” The experience was also great-

alongside NATO allies in a realistic training environment,” said Lt. Gen. Timothy M. Ray, 3rd Air Force commander. “We train with our Allies and partners every day because you cannot surge trust. You cannot just show up to the championship game without hours on the practice field. Our allies and partners offer unique capabilities, perspective and access to strategic locations.” Scott explained that this training not only allows partnered nations to gain trust but also practice scenarios they would not normally face. “Not only does this event provide assurance to our allies in the region, but we’re gaining excellent training in executing our mission with the Bulgarian armed forces,” Scott explained. “Every day, we’re learning from each other in all aspects of combat operations, be it in flight, airborne personnel training or ground support.”

This type of FTD involves many aircrew members as well as many support personnel to keep all parts moving. “We rely so much on others to help get us out the door and into the air,” said Staff Sgt. Toni Odom, 37 AS loadmaster and Thracian Summer ramp coordinator. “Before aircrews even step, there have been hours of work in place to make

everything run smoothly. From the squadron aviation resource management flight, creating our flight authorizations and dealing with last minute changes to aircrew flight equipment inspecting our night vision goggles and helmets and of course maintenance working around the clock to keep the airplanes healthy, it definitely takes a village.”

Firing up allied training with 435 CTS

Maj. Tomas Zukauskas, Lithuanian air force firefighter, participates in a 435th Construction and Training Squadronled training exercise July 11 on Ramstein. The 435 CTS provides its allies equipment and environments to harbor productive training exercises to ensure a high standard of maintaining mission readiness across Europe.

Story and photos by Airman 1st Class Lane T. Plummer 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs The 435th Construction and Training Squadron hosted training exercises with Lithuanian air force service members July 11 through 15 on Ramstein. Lithuanian airmen performed several exercises such as simulated live-fire events in planes and closequarter rescue missions. In order for the exercises to happen, the 435 CTS provided equipment and training facilities that weren’t available for the visiting allies elsewhere. According to Staff Sgt. Valdas Parnarauskas,

Lithuanian air force fire and rescue section commander, the cooperation between them and the U.S. Airmen is paramount to a better training environment. “I think the Air Force has helped us grow a lot,” Parnarauskas said. “As I oversee my men training with (U.S. Airmen), I see the impact they have on them. The equipment here allows us to complete all of our training and more, and I think that will help us greatly in becoming better at our jobs.” Lithuanian air force firefighters trained on rescuing a training dummy out of a cramped location whilst maintaining sustainable oxygen levels within a time

limit. They continued their training throughout the week by participating in simulated live-fire events, such as extinguishing fires on aircrafts and structures. With the help of Airmen such as U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Anthony Montano, 435 CTS contingency firefighting operations instructor, training went smoothly for both parties. “My role for this NATO firefighting partnership course is the program manager, and my aim is to meet the needs of the foreign military members coming in for training with adequate facilitation,” Montano said. “Since we do these training exercises about twice a year, I feel like my working rela-

tionship with the (Lithuanian air force) has become better and has shown in the results we get from our training. We tailor to their needs, and as a result, their training engages them more while we learn how to cooperate with allied forces.” The 435 CTS continues to serve U.S. allies with up-todate training that maintains a standard of safety and coop-

erative abilities throughout Europe. This open approach to allowing allies to engage with Ramstein training facilities remains a motive for them to come back. “We have all become better as a result of being here,” Parnarauskas said. “I look forward to coming back and training even harder and improving even more next time.”

Flight attendants serve our nation’s leaders Story and photo by Senior Airman Nesha Humes 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs The highly polished wood surfaces, soft reclining leather seats and large, bright windows lining the C-37 Gulfstream are indicative of its distinguished passengers and the class of the professionals serving them. The 76th Airlift Squadron flight attendants are among the few selected across the Air Force to represent the military in assisting world leaders. While their job consists of grocery shopping, coordinating, prepping, cooking and serving meals, as well as cleaning and loading luggage, onboard aircraft safety is their primary responsibility. “The biggest misconception about our job is that it’s as easy as being a commercial flight attendant,” said Tech. Sgt. Cheneldra Moore, 76 AS flight attendant. “The commercial airlines would hire at least three to four different positions to do what’s all-encompassing in our job title.” In order to work on an aircraft, they must first pass evaluations in egress duties and emergency procedures. All U.S. Air Force flyers are taught basic aircraft fundamentals, yet every aircraft has its own set of procedures that the flight attendants must learn when they are assigned to a new aircraft to become mission-qualified. Staff Sgt. Ashleen Martinez, 76 AS flight attendant, welcomed Moore aboard her first Gulfstream flight. “My job today is making sure my new students learn about the aircraft and understand this jet,” Martinez said. Martinez teaches the differences of working as a solo flight attendant versus Moore’s previous roles of working within a team the past ten years. The flight attendants go through the preflight checklist ensuring all equipment is serviceable then secure the cabin for takeoff. Soon after the seat belt sign disappears, they begin cooking. The Airmen act as chefs, navigating the compact kitchen to prep and serve hot dishes to their notable passengers and the crew. Multitasking and time management are key to

being proficient in this labor-intensive job, Moore said. “I’ve learned how to be productive in small amounts of time with big responsibilities,” Moore added. “Our motto is safety, comfort and reliability; in that, you tend to put yourself last to make sure everyone else is taken care of.” Flying around the globe week to week, jumping time zones and living out of luggage is a lifestyle that comes with its challenges. “I think the physical labor is the most challenging part of the job, from lifting equipment, standing on our feet all the time to being awake when everyone else is asleep,” Moore said. “We are the safety experts, so we have to be up and sometimes we forget to take care of ourselves.” “We barely eat or drink water, but it’s worth it,” Martinez said. “I like the longer missions because you a have a chance to go to the bathroom.” According to the 76 AS Aviation Resource Management office, the 24 flight attendants in the

76 AS average approximately 25 missions a month. Mission lengths can vary from one to 15 days. With all the traveling, both Moore and Martinez explained that they love their job. “I like interacting with different people,” Martinez said, who wanted to be a commercial flight attendant but also stay close to her military roots. Some of the leaders they have worked for are only seen on television by most people. “We get to work and interact with our nation’s leaders,” Moore said. “It’s one of the best jobs in the Air Force.” The once special duty is now a career assignment, only available to current service members looking to cross train. Applicants have to go through a records review, flight physical and security clearance and obtain five letters of recommendation to be eligible. For more information on applying, visit the myPERS website.

Chaplain disarms her pain: One doesn’t have to be good to be loved by Senior Airman Nesha Humes 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs

Pencils? Check. Erasers? Check. Knife as a deterrence weapon? Check. For many American school-age children, remembering to pack a knife alongside your homework is grounds for a suspension, at best. However, for Chaplain (Col.) Donnette Boyd, 86th Airlift Wing wing chaplain, it was part of her routine as a young girl many years ago.

Growing up in a tough Cleveland neighborhood, Boyd lived in fear for years of being a victim to the daily beatings given by her classmates. “I grew up fighting a lot — fighting my way to school, fighting my way home,” Boyd said. “I didn’t think I’d actually use the knife, but people would know I had it there to defend myself. I managed to attend that school for three years and not be attacked. “I had a very pessimistic view of humanity because of

my upbringing,” she continued. “I didn’t have the love for people that I do now. I saw people as pain.” At age 6, Boyd, her mother and older brother moved to Cleveland from Jamaica. Because of the culture shift, she said their family had a different perspective than her American neighborhood. “(In Jamaica,) I went to school with kids who didn’t have shoes on their feet because they didn’t own a pair of shoes,” Boyd said. “They literally were barefoot. (My family) saw it as,

regardless of how tough it is, you still get 12 years of free education. It’s all how you look at it. I saw it as the glass was half-full, while the people around me saw it as the glass was half-empty.” During her time in Cleveland, Boyd said the faucet was dripping to fill her glass every day. “I lived in the hood, but I never let the hood get inside me,” Boyd said. “I’d always had an ambition to be studious, grow up and get out of that neighborhood. I got picked on because I was dif-

ferent; I guess I stood out being the bookworm. I didn’t like the violence, the drugs, and I didn’t like the constant dehumanization of people. When I was in middle school, there was a gang that would clobber people — ten of them at a time — like the fighting you’d see on YouTube. That was an everyday occurrence at my school. That’s really when I learned the power of prayer.” Without any direct spiritual guidance, it was around See Chaplain, Page 9

If I didn’t envision a better future from those early years, I wouldn’t be here.” While everyday was a mental, physical and emotional battle, Boyd pressed on, making it home to complete her homework and chores, instilled in her by her “tough” mother. “Having survived my mother’s parenting has made me a better person,” the mother of two said. “(My mom) was tougher on me and my brother than I am on my own kids. There’s some things she did I would never do. But there’s some things she did as a mom I think made her an even better mom than me.” Boyd’s perseverance and ambitious attitude led her to Kent State University in 1983, where she joined the U.S. Air Force Reserve Officers’ Training Corps and commissioned as a line officer in 1987. Though she had left the neighborhood behind, it wasn’t until several duty assignments later, at the age of 28, Boyd said she finally felt the pain start to diminish. It happened while she was reading the Bible during her first year of being a Christian; Boyd said the change in her was all spiritual. “When God took the pain away from me, I could react to people not from my pain but out of the freedom from that pain,” Boyd said. “I could look at other people and tell when they’re in pain. A lot of us are walking around hurting, and we don’t know how to address it. I

realized that a person doesn’t have to be good to be loved, that people were hurting just like I was. And I can love them in spite of the fact that they’re hurting and not judge them based on their actions.” Equipped with her spiritual transformation and love for mentoring, Boyd taught Bible study and assisted in sermons at a Ramstein church. It was then that Boyd’s husband brought up the initial idea of her becoming a chaplain. She agreed, and in 1996, she separated from the military to attend seminary. In 2000, Boyd graduated seminary and was among the 15 percent selected to commission as a U.S. Air Force chaplain. Boyd said her violent experiences caused her a lot of pain and has shaped the way she empathizes, mentors and connects with service members as a spiritual leader. Some of her favorite parts of her job are unit visitation and counseling. Boyd said approximately 80 percent of a problem is not having someone to talk to about it with. “The vast majority of people that come in for counseling are for nonspiritual matters,” Boyd stated. “It’s for stress, anxiety, marriage problems and work-related issues. (There are) various things going on in (service

members’) lives, but they don’t feel comfortable talk-

ing to anyone else about it.” Regardless of an individ-

ual’s faith, Boyd said she truly enjoys helping people make a connection and reach a level of peace from within. “I really believe in our first amendment right,” Boyd said. “No one has the right to tell us what to believe or how to worship. I love the idea of accommodating people regardless of their faith background.” It was through her fight, pain, resilience, focus, love and motivation to serve God that Boyd earned the rank of colonel, becoming the first African-American female, active-duty chaplain in the U.S. Air Force to do so. “It’s unreal and humbling,” Boyd said. “One of the things I benefited from so much in the Air Force is it’s what you bring to the fight, not what you bring it in. People will give you your props if you work hard and earn it.”

by Sgt. Daniel J. Friedberg 7th Mission Support Command Public Affairs Twenty-two Army Reserve Soldiers and their families from the 7th Mission Support Command facing upcoming future deployments had the chance to learn about the Army and Department of Defense support services, organizations and programs and to make contacts at a predeployment Yellow Ribbon Reintegration Program event held July 15 to 17 at the Westin Grand Hotel in Frankfurt. The Yellow Ribbon Reintegration Program is sponsored by the Office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Reserve Affairs and is designed to connect Reserve and National Guard Soldiers and families with resources throughout their deployment cycle, said 1st Lt. Sara Mathewson, United States Army Reserve Command, G1 from Fort Gillem in Forest Park, Georgia. For Janine M. Harper, 7th MSC Family Programs director, the support of the USARC team from the United States was a big help. “For our families here in Europe, it’s very difficult to transport them across seas to these local events, so we ask them come here and support our families by giving an event locally,” Harper said. “It’s not just one flight; it could be multiple flights,” Harper said of the prohibitive costs that would be involved to bring the 7th MSC’s families to these events in the continental United States. “Through that coordination and Lt. Mathewson being able to step up, she was able to bring that team to us,” Harper said. Mathewson is one of a core team of experts from the USARC Mobile Training Team that organizes and hosts the YRRP seminars throughout the USARC area of responsibility, which includes the 7th MSC in Germany. The events are organized to provide help to Soldiers and their families in three blocks: predeployment, deployment and postdeployment phases, Mathewson said. “The predeployment event pretty much starts off the process,” Mathewson said. The first YRRP meeting occurs about 90 days before the Soldier deploys. “We give classes on how to address the stress (of deployment), how to set up the household,” Mathewson explained. The during-deployment event invites the Soldiers’ family members to focus on the fact that returning Soldiers and their families may be affected by the deployment, she added. Mathewson said that this event is primarily designed to give See Yellow Ribbon, Page 13

Allow butter to melt in pan. Don’t let it get past warm. Add mushrooms, diced ham, and spaetzle. Heat all for 5-7 minutes, on medium heat, stirring occasionally. Season with salt, pepper and nutmeg. Add grated Gouda and chopped parsley. Divide equally into four bowls and you have a nice comfort food dinner. If desired, you can top with nicely browned onions. A nice summer salad of tomato, cucumber and lettuce will compliment this meal well.

Ammo Center Europe demonstrates flexibility in supporting USAREUR, NATO Courtesy of 21st Theater Sustainment Command Public Affairs

The Miesau Army Ammunition Depot, located just to the west of Kaiserslautern, appears unassuming from the Autobahn and calling it a depot hardly does justice to the installation’s importance to U.S. Army Europe and NATO efforts. While the depot does serve as the staging site for 25,000 tons of ammunition and held around 200,000 tons at the height of the cold war, much more than basic ammo passes through this critical hub of sustainment services. The Army Ammunition Center Europe, a 21st Theater Sustainment Command unit that calls the depot home, performs a wide variety of munitions-focused sustainment efforts. The center recently received a shipment of more than 12,000 reactive armor tiles that were painted in desert sand instead of forest green that matches the current fleet of military equipment in Europe. The adaptive team at the ACE began the process of working with contractors to repaint the tiles to forest green, and like many efforts in sustainment, the process is not nearly as simple as it may seem. The tiles must be individually unpacked by hand, transported to a painting site, painted, allowed to dry and then transported back to a packing site where they are repacked. All of this must be performed according to stringent international safety and transport guidelines. Once completed, the tiles are ready to be mounted on combat vehicles. “It’s a very labor-intensive process and involves a lot of moving pieces and very demanding quality standards, but it’s absolutely necessary,” said Gene Warren, Theater Logistics Support Center Europe deputy director, the higher headquarters of ACE. “We are in Europe, so for operational purposes, the tiles have to be green. The painting process just shows how adaptive and flexible the team of technical experts at the ACE are.” The tiles represent a critical defense against emerging threats, and fielding them quickly has been a high priority for the commanding general of USAREUR, Lt. Gen. Ben Hodges, who recently visited Miesau to see the tile repainting and other ongoing efforts at the center. Painting enough tiles for one brigade combat team is expected to take about four months. During the visit, Hodges stopped at several storage sites and was briefed on a variety of current efforts underway at the ACE. The reactive tile repainting effort is just one example of how the simple task of receiving, storing and issuing

Lt. Gen. Ben Hodges, U.S. Army Europe commanding general, receives a briefing on the status of an ongoing, labor-intensive effort of Army Ammunition Center Europe to re-paint 13,000 reactive armor tiles from sand to forest green. The tiles are a critical defense against emerging threats and are being fielded to vehicles in the European Activity Set, which are used by regionally allocated forces throughout Europe. This effort is just one of many adaptive sustainment efforts by the Theater Logistics Support Center Europe in support of USAREUR and NATO operations throughout Europe.

munitions in support of USAREUR and NATO can get very complicated very quickly. The center will process 1,100 containers of ammunition this year and manages over 400 bunkers across 2,000 acres of land to store the ammunition. Of course, the process is not just as simple as storing the ammunition. It

has to be closely tracked, and impeccable accountability must be maintained. Additionally, the center must adhere to stringent international safety standards when shipping and storing ammunition. The center also receives ammunition residue, most commonly in the form of brass bullet casings, from supported

units throughout Europe and reprocesses the residue. In another example of adaptive thinking, the center was able to set up a program to quickly reprocess and actually generate revenue for the government from ammunition residue. The center employs just 228 local nationals and Department of the Army civilians across four sites. This relatively small but capable workforce includes experts in a wide variety of munitions and directly supports almost every major USAREUR operation, including regionally allocated forces and the European Activity Set as well as critical NATO operations like Operation Atlantic Resolve. The center’s higher headquarters, the TLSC-E, is a brigade equivalent organization under the 21st Theater Sustainment Command. The depot was founded as the Rhine Ammunition Depot May 23, 1949, and was designated as a NATO ammunition depot under the U.S. Army and is the largest ammunition depot outside the U.S. At the height of the Cold War, the Theater Storage Area had 200,000 short tons of ammunition and employed over 1,500 local nationals. Today the center has approximately 30,000 short tons of ammunition. The diverse local-national workforce within TLSC-E and ACE include over 10 national origins, and due to the long-term nature of their employment, some employees have 20-, 30- and 40-plus years of experience. This critical experience coupled with the intense internal procedures ensure a safe working environment directly contributing to the readiness of the Soldiers within USAREUR.

New ‘Lean Leader’ course looks to make process optimization more mainstream by Shane Sharp Regional Health Command Europe Public Affairs Six members of Regional Health Command Europe graduated from the U.S. Army Medical Command’s new Lean Leader course July 20 during a ceremony held at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center. The five-day course is aimed at providing practical tools for personnel to optimize processes in MEDCOM units. The class is an opportunity for students who aren’t planning to spend the extensive time required to earn Lean Six Sigma green or black belt certification but are looking for tools to reduce waste and boost efficiency in their organizations. “Our customers wanted a way to give their people valuable tools to identify and eliminate waste without sending them away for weeks at a time for green or black belt training,” said James Pauly, RHCE Strategy and Innovation acting director and Lean Leader course instructor. An average person might think of garbage when they hear the term “waste,” but in Lean Leader training, waste has a very different and specific meaning. According to Pauly, there are seven kinds of waste that can be identified in organizational processes: • Transportation • Inventory • Motion • Waiting • Over-production • Over-processing • Defects “Waste is anything that detracts from or prohibits optimum efficiency

in a process,” Pauly said. “We give our students the tools they need to seek and destroy waste. We teach them how to map and evaluate the process in question, break down the problem, identify the root cause(s), and develop and implement solutions.” The course is structured to connect learning and application in a practical way. Students are asked to bring a problem area to class from their organization that is process-based so they can apply tools to a real-world scenario.

the military family the tools to increase personal communication and to predict when serious psychological issues may arise and strategies to cope. In extreme cases, there are even instructions on how to intervene to prevent suicide. The two post-deployment seminars focus again on both the Soldiers and the family members. Those events will happen 90 and 180 days after the deployment, and in those seminars, the health of the Soldier and his or her relationship to the family are re-visited, Mathewson said. “YRRP brings the Soldiers together with their families to help complete Army post-deployment assessment surveys and focus on substance abuse,” Mathewson said. Mathewson explained that those health issues can typically arise after deployment and that the Army remains particularly focused on identifying and treating those issues proactively. Harper explains that the needs of a Reserve Soldier’s family can be more complex due to the

“Students should leave with an understanding of lean tools — tools that help organizations identify and eliminate waste in their day-to-day processes and on a continual basis,” Pauly said. “We want them to strive for perfection.” For the six graduates from the first course in the KMC, the benefits can already be seen. “When I came to this course, I thought Lean Six Sigma was a waste of time from what I had heard from other people who have not taken this course,” said one of the students

fact that Germany is a foreign country for many 7th MSC families. Many of the typical support systems family members have back home in the United States are not always available here. “We’re trying to arrange for them to come back for a during-deployment (event),” Harper said of the families of deployed Soldiers. Harper explains that her small team often gets tasked to help in some very extenuating circumstances for as many as 200 Soldiers from the 7th MSC currently being tracked by the Family Programs office. “It could be anything, like (Soldiers or their family members) are in the hospital and they need help activating volunteers to be able to help support their family by bringing food and meals to their home,” Harper said. For the Soldiers attending the event, the venue and the organization of the event was very much appreciated. “Pretty much everything was good,” said Spc. Stephen G. Bowers, 793rd Movement Control Team.

in the post-course evaluation. “But actually, being part of this class has given me a better perspective and tools that I can now implement at my work and even in my personal life.” Right now, the course is only available within the Army’s Regional Health Command Europe, which encompasses medical, dental, public health and veterinary units throughout the European theater. There is interest in adopting the MEDCOM Lean curriculum and making it available Army-wide as early as next year, according to Pauly.

This YRRP stressed the necessary information for deploying Soldiers and their families, in contrast to the more mechanically executed briefings. Bowers said he was particularly interested to learn about his civilian employment rights after his deployment. “It’s great help,” said Sgt. Claudia P. Martinez, 793rd MCT, who is also deploying with Bowers. Martinez said that through the seminar, she was able to establish better contacts to the unit’s family readiness group. Martinez explained that she could allay some fears she and her husband had about who would take care of their 16-year old daughter on those occasions when her husband, also an active-duty Soldier, would have to travel for his job during Martinez’s deployment. “I learned (about) everything: education, jobs, finance,” Martinez said. Editor’s note: Details of the Yellow Ribbon Reintegration Program can be found online at www. YellowRibbon.mil or through the YRRP Facebook page at www.facebook.com/dodyrrp.

For the 12th time, the city of Annweiler will celebrate a medieval fest to honor Richard the Lionheart of Brittany today to Sunday. The event will feature a medieval market with vendors and craftsmen, a knights’ camp, jugglers, magicians, children’s activities and musical presentations in the historical part of Annweiler. At 7 p.m. today, the mayor will officially open the fest by reading a declaration, and all participants will walk into town in a parade. Market activities with more than 40 stands in the streets will begin at 5:30 p.m. today. Vendors will sell everything from soap, spices, pottery, glass and leather items to jewelry, toys and dream catchers. Visitors can admire how craftsmen such as turners, potters, goldsmiths, stone cutters, glass blowers, broom makers and tailors worked in former times. Stands with food and drink specialties will serve flat cake, oriental specialties, sweets, mead, absinth and other drinks from the Middle Ages. 8 Great Day Trips in Germany with the Kids

Tea house in Chinese garden in Luisenpark, Mannheim Story courtesy of MilitaryInGermany.com There is so much more to Germany than the wonderful churches and castles. Have you ever heard of farm golf or seen a Celtic house? Kids and adults alike will enjoy investigating German houses of the past and whizzing down a hillside in a toboggan. From swimming pools to steel factories, there are so many places to visit. Here are some ideas for great day trips that you can do, with or without the kids…

the skyline. Cable cars run all over the plant like a chair lift runs up a mountain. Walking around, smelling the dust, noticing the weather feeling the immensity of the factory sparks the imagination into seeing what it would have been like to work there. A tour of the plant takes around 3 hours and is well worth the short drive to the Saarbruecken area.

1. Potzberg Wild Animal Park Every day from spring to fall there is a Birds of Prey Show at the Potzberg Wild Animal Park. Even visitors who don’t speak German get a thrill when the hawks swoop past. The spacious zoo has several animals and is a wonderful way to catch a glimpse of the wild boar that dominates the local forests.

3. Luisenpark Mannheim If you haven’t seen storks in the Ramstein area, you are sure to see them at Luisenpark. This unique and large park in Mannheim contains playgrounds, restaurants, and animals. Pink pelicans and flamingos play in the water. A butterfly may land on you in the butterfly house. Hidden behind the Chinese Garden are two Terra Cotta Soldiers from an ancient Chinese burial site. From relaxing in the shade, climbing in the playground and viewing snakes in the reptile house this park offers something for everyone.

2. Voelklinger Huette The Voelklingen Steel Factory closed its doors in 1986 when its equipment and manufacturing processes became obsolete. It is the only preserved plant of its kind and now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Visitors are permitted to walk all around the plant for a fascinating self-guided tour. Blast furnaces that look like large canisters dominate

4. Keltendorf Steinbach This Celtic living history museum lets visitors experience life in Germany 2,000 years ago. Children may get the opportunity to cut and sew leather to construct their own coin purse, or pound copper to make a medallion. See how grain was ground and check out the construction of Celtic structures. Plan ahead. This small museum is

only open on the weekends. 5. Freilichtmuseum Bad Sobernheim About 500 years ago, several years after the Celts, and several before modern times, the Freilichtmuseum gives visitors a more recent look into Germany’s past. It turns out that life wasn’t too much different from the American Pioneers. There wasn’t water or electricity inside the houses, cooking was done over open fires, and houses were swept with hand-made brooms. A walking trip through all the buildings can easily last four hours as there are many open buildings. Rest at the restaurant or pack a picnic. Visit during a special event to see live demonstrations of what life was like. 6. Natural Swimming Pool Landstuhl The natural water filtration system gives this swimming pool its name. Hidden behind a building on the edge of Landstuhl, it’s surprising to see a large grassy area, water slide and landscaped swimming pools. Little ones can toddle among the pebbles in the ankle deep water, while big kids enjoy the low platform diving board and inner tubes. If all the play builds up the appetite, brats can be purchased or visitors can enjoy a picnic. A day can easily slip away as everyone enjoys the afternoon swimming, sunning and relaxing.

7. Alpine Slide Peterberg Although the thought of sliding down a hill in a metal cart on a track may seem frightening, it’s actually quite fun. The cars are towed up and then released at the top for a curvy, fun-filled ride down the hill. Each car has breaks which are easy to use, and parents can ride with their small children. In the winter there is a lift to bring skiers up the hill. It’s not too often we get the opportunity to spend an afternoon like this. 8. Farm Golf at Heuhotel Schanz With wooden shoes attached to a stick visitors try to hit a soccer ball into a bucket recessed into the ground. The course is laid out in a farm field like a golf course. After the round visitors can grab a beer and a bite to eat, and that’s not all. There is also a hay hotel. That’s right, you can spend the night in the barn on the hay.
