The refresher SERE course is taught once a month, and crew members learn combatives and go through crash scenarios, one in the woods and one in the water. The new RamExpress station holds about 450,000 liters of gas making it the largest Army and Air Force Exchange Service-run gas station in the world.

“Each new pumping station will have diesel fuel available,” Wilson said. “Ramstein has never carried diesel fuel before, so this is going to be a great convenience for all of our diesel consumers.” With the additional pumps, Wilson said the transition and buying experience should be seamless and speedy, almost completely removing the wait time for gas, except in extreme peak periods of the day. “We’re still going to have

“There will be demands upon your ability, upon your endurance, upon your disposition, upon your patience…just as fire tempers iron into fine steel so does adversity temper one’s character into firmness, tolerance and determination.” — Sen. Margaret Chase Smith. As we’ve gone through the past couple of resiliency days, I, like many other people, have pondered how to improve my own personal resiliency. I’ve read and understood the existing instructional information on the importance of physical, mental, emotional and spiritual fitness. I get it — from a basic standpoint. Unfortunately, however, I still struggle with being able to articulate the “how” of truly changing and improving my own physical, mental, emotional and spiritual fitness. It seems very simple on the surface — you can workout more, you can talk to others, you can lean on your spiritual foundation. That’s all easily said. But something seems to be missing. What is that key ingredient, the “it factor” that enables us to build the necessary resiliency for our challenging military lives.

Then, it hit me. Attitude! Attitude is the vital “it factor” that can make or break one’s quest for resiliency. A strong, positive attitude is the one aspect that cannot be missing as we develop and build true resiliency within ourselves. There are a number of different kinds of attitude. Obviously, the “good kinds” are those that will lead to positive enrichment. The old adage, “Attitude will determine your altitude,” directly applies in developing personal resiliency. Probably the most basic, and yet important attitude trait is optimism. Military members are continually called upon to perform a multitude of personal and professional tasks to an overwhelming extent. Through optimism, we have the necessary approach for dealing with the trials and tribulations thrown our way. A true optimist is seldom surprised by troubles and typically has the capacity to identify a partial solution for the situation at hand. Furthermore, optimists believe they have control over their future and deeply appreciate most aspects of their lives. Throwing a little optimism in one’s approach to a problem set is bound to build one’s resiliency. Hand in hand with optimism is the value of having a “spirited” attitude. Spirited individu-

als tend to accept what cannot be changed and invest their energy into things that can make a difference. Spirited individuals thrive on the journey of making things better and immersing themselves into the world around them. A relentless spirit for life can be an unstoppable resiliency trait. Lastly, each of us should strive for an altruistic attitude to round out our wingman culture. Altruism entails unselfishly giving back to others and focusing on making the world a better place. Altruism is probably the reason most of us choose to pursue the profession of arms and service to our country. Placing that altruistic attitude at the forefront of one’s development will not only benefit personal resiliency, but also the resiliency of those around them. I personally vow to never forget the role that attitude can and should play in my personal resiliency development. For others, the answers to resiliency likely lie inside of you. All you need to do is look, listen and trust. You can have a negative attitude or a positive one. With an optimistic, spirited, altruistic attitude as your compass, you have all the tools and resources you need. Attitude is a little thing that makes a big difference. It is the key.

One Airman’s story to beating cancer, exceeding standards by Airman 1st Class Trevor Rhynes 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs “I felt like I was in an improv acting class and the teacher just said, ‘OK, today we’re acting out extreme shock. You have cancer ... go,’” said Staff Sgt. Kristofer Sirks, 86th Communications Squadron systems control shift supervisor. While deployed to Afghanistan in October 2011, Sirks found out he had cancer. “I began experiencing intense abdominal pain and it eventually got to the point where I couldn’t stand upright,” he said. “I was able to seek immediate attention in our 24/7 health clinic. From there I was advised to have an ultrasound done to undergo further testing.” Half an hour after his ultrasound, Sirks was notified that he had a tumor the size of a nickel. “The colonel told me they were 99 percent sure

It was then that I first broke down with grief.” Before heading home he only had enough time to notify three people: his wife, brother and supervisor. “The only people I was able to personally tell were my wife, Molly, my little brother, Luke, and my supervisor, then Staff Sgt. Ryan Hannigan,” Sirks said. “I wasn’t able to tell anybody else because I was still in Afghanistan and I was limited on time. My wife was in Ireland with her mother when I was able to contact her.” They all reacted differently to the news. “Molly’s reaction was that of determination. She told me she was on her way home and that she’d see me at the hospital in Landstuhl,” Sirks said. “I later found out she broke out in tears after she hung up.”

With a strong will to survive, they can make it happen.” Once the combatives class was over, aircrew members met at a clearing in the woods to go through some basic survival training. “We walk through the woods and instruct them as we go,” said Staff Sgt. Tony Fancher, 86th OSS NCOIC of SERE operations and training. “It’s our job to make sure they understand what they need to do.” Students were constantly being quizzed on different aspects of survival and got a lot of hands-on training. They were instructed on how to find shelter and food, shown radio operations, signals, and the basics of starting a fire. “I’ve been through these courses a number of times,” said Master Sgt. Michael Nentwich, 76th Airlift Squadron communications systems operator. “Every time I do this I learn something I didn’t know before. This time I learned a lot about the German plant life.” As a part of the water training, aircrew members were taught how to stay together and get to the life raft safely by linking to each other and working on not exerting a lot of energy. “Teamwork is huge,” Krape said. “Working together betters the chances of getting home.” Aircrew members often reach their limits during the water portion, they don’t expect it to be so hard in their uniform, Fancher said. “The most gratifying part of the job is to see people overcome their limits and get stronger,” Krape said. SERE specialists have more than 450 aircrew members here to keep current on their training and ensure each member is mentally and physically prepared for the mission.

Analog leadership in digital times by Chief Master Sgt. of the Air Force James A. Roy WASHINGTON — The U.S. Air Force is the world’s most advanced air, space and cyberspace force. Most of that can be attributed to you — our outstanding Airmen — but technology also plays a huge role. Advanced tools help us maintain an advantage over our adversaries. Technology has enabled our continuing success. However, technology also threatens to cripple us. As electronic communication becomes more widely used, our face-to-face interaction skills are beginning to suffer. We know how to text, Skype and FaceTime, but some of us seem reluctant to engage in a meaningful face-to-face conversation. We value technology because it saves us time, provides conveniences and helps us to be more efficient. But we must also recognize its potential to strip us of critical human connection skills. This high-tech challenge has a low-tech solution. We need to strike a balance; we must continue to emphasize the importance of technology — a resource we cannot and will not stop exploiting — and at the same time emphasize the importance and value of analog leadership. Analog leadership means temporarily putting down the iPads and Android tablets, logging out of Facebook and Twitter, and switching phones to airplane mode to stop the stream of texts coming in and out. It means shutting off the technology and talking to each other. Face-to-face. One-on-one. Real human interaction — yes, for some of us it

may be awkward at first, but getting to know each other better is an investment that will yield incalculable returns. Stronger connections will create a foundation on which we can grow more meaningful relationships. And then we can turn the devices back on and use them for their intended purpose: to augment and add value to our real-life relationships. As Airmen, we have to understand how to use technology, because without it we are not as well-equipped to do our jobs. However, as human beings, we also have to understand how and when not to use technology, because when distracted by it we are not as well-equipped to relate to others. Overseas extension incentives changes ahead by Debbie Gildea Air Force Personnel Center JOINT BASE SAN ANTONIO, Texas — Airmen stationed at overseas long tour locations who extend their tour Aug. 1 or later may be eligible for incentives, Air Force Personnel Center officials said. Recent changes to the Overseas Tour Extension Incentive Program will affect members who make a “date eligible for return from overseas” decision Aug. 1 or later. Some Air Force specialty codes have been added to the eligibility list, while others have been removed, said Bill Warner, the AFPC Assignment Programs and Procedures Branch chief. The OTEIP exists to increase stability and decrease permanent change of station costs, he said. “Incentives are offered to

all enlisted members who extend their overseas short tour by 12 months,” Warner said. “Enlisted members in specific career fields at overseas long tour locations are also eligible when they extend their overseas long tour by 12 months. Eligible Air Force Specialty Codes are periodically reviewed and approved by the secretary of the Air Force. Airmen who accept OTEIP can opt for one of three incentives: $2,000 special lump sum payment, 30 days of non-chargeable vacation time or 14 days of non-chargeable vacation time and funded travel (for the military member only) to the nearest stateside port and back. These eligibility changes are the result of a June revalidation review, Warner said. During the review, various criteria were evaluated, such as critical manning levels and

overseas/stateside balance, as well as such factors as operational tempo and resource availability. “Under-manning at the seven-level is one reason a couple of career fields were added,” Warner said. “Air traffic control is 63 percent manned at the seven-level and combat control is at 57 percent, so OTEIP offers incentives to keep those members in place an extra year.” Career fields were identified for removal from the incentive list for various reasons, including administrative and manning level changes, Warner said. “The 1T191, or aircrew life support, field is no longer a valid career field, so removing it was an administrative decision. Other fields have seen overseas manning levels improve, so incentivizing someone to remain an additional year is no longer neces-

sary,” he said. OTEIP changes are effective for Airmen currently assigned overseas at long tour locations who make a DEROS extension decision Aug. 1 or later. Airmen who have already requested and received an approved DEROS extension under OTEIP will not be affected,

he Air Force network migration project, which started more than a year ago, is coming to U.S. Air Forces in Europe this fall. Team Ramstein is currently scheduled to be the last USAFE base migrated in the mid-November timeframe. This major Air Force project eliminates multiple domains and establishes one Air Force network for all bases and users, centrally managed and controlled by C4/cyber professionals. The project offers users some significant improvements. The most obvious benefit to all is the standardization and security of our network enterprise, and resulting sustained ability to perform required mission tasks. Individually, the AFNet migration will allow all Airmen to have a single email account always active and accessible at any Air Force location worldwide through the use of their Common Access Card. The days of deactivating and creating new accounts with every move will be over. The migration eliminates the first.last@ramstein.af.mil email address and replaces it with the first.last@us.af.mil address. This will then serve as someone’s email address for the length of their service. As King Comm prepares for the project, most of the actions and changes will be transparent to users. C4 professionals have been busy the past few weeks installing equipment and preparing for the migration of more than 15,000 users. This is no small task and King Comm, in conjunction with HQ USAFE/A6, will devote considerable resources and effort to make the process a smooth and successful transition. Local technicians will be available and handpicked to respond to any potential issues that may arise. Everyone’s patience during the migration will be greatly appreciated. Another key element of the migration is a sustained, effective 24/7 response to issues. As a result, the Air Force has already established the Enterprise Service Desk, or ESD, system to respond to unclassified network issues and outages. ESD call centers are located at Maxwell-Gunter Air Force Base, Ala.; Lackland AFB, Texas; Ramstein Air Base, Germany; and Hickam AB, Hawaii. ESD technicians are essential to the success of the migration and will assume a greater role in problem resolution as the base moves to a more sustainable and defendable Air Force network. Most problems will be resolved at the ESD level. Those that cannot be fixed will be forwarded to the local technicians. This is an exciting time as we prepare to finally implement the “One Air Force, One Network” concept. It has taken years for the C4/cyber organizations to be developed and for technology to mature to a level that allows base technicians the ability to positively consolidate networks and centralize services. King Comm will provide more detailed user information as the move gets closer to the migration dates to answer specific questions and educate base users.

A man dressed in World War I aviator attire somberly talks about the Great War and some of the major events that went on. After he’s finished speaking, he bows his head and the spotlight goes out. Another man takes the stage, this time dressed in a World War II uniform and, like the first, speaks about many devastating events from that time. The light fades a second time. “Spirits of the Past” is a production put on by Kisling NCO Academy instructors on Kapaun Air Station performed for the students before they graduate. “’Spirits of the Past’ began in 1992,” said Master Sgt. Bryan Daniel, NCO Academy knowledge operations division superintendent. “It is a historical stage, sound and video presentation, which pays tribute to our enlisted corps’ heritage, Air Force history and all those in the military.” The production has actors from many different eras: World War I, World War II, Korean War, Vietnam War and operations Desert Shield, Desert Storm, Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom. “My dad was in the Air Force during Vietnam and this is my way of paying homage to him,” said Tech. Sgt. Jason Howland, U.S. Air Forces in Europe NCO Academy instructor and Vietnam

War actor. “I put my emotions into the performance and I feel like I am talking for him.” The production was developed to help NCOs fulfill their responsibilities in the areas of history and the enlisted contribution and is performed for every graduating class, Daniel said. “It gives everyone a sense of pride after watching or participating in the production,” Howland said. “It’s a huge boost in morale and I see students leave here with their heads held higher, proud to be a part of the U.S. Air Force.” Every era’s personality has a story to tell and they all tell it in their own way relating personal stories to their on-stage performance. “We are on stage for about five minutes each telling our story,” Howland said. “It would be hard to memorize all that dialogue unless you relate it to something personal. My dad was in Vietnam and that’s a major part of my story. I switch

things around a little, but it helps me get all the emotion out in the open.” Research plays an important part in the production, Howland said. “In my portion of the performance, I reference a Marine who died in Vietnam,” Howland said. “That story is true and I did my research and found out how and where he died so I could use that in my story.” This unique production has successfully grabbed the attention of all graduates since 1992 and displays more than 90 years of enlisted heritage, Daniel said. As the lights dim, the production comes to a close. The spirits of the past take the stage one more time to salute the audience. “You are the next generation,” said Tech. Sgt. Jason Fulmer, World War I presenter. “You are the expeditionary Airmen. So we, the spirits of the past, proudly salute you, spirit of the Air Force.”

German Polizei Corner Avoid vehicle thefts, break-ins

The German Polizei has been receiving notifications from Americans of vehicle thefts and break-ins. According to a statistical survey conducted by the Landstuhl Polizei department in 2010, 98 percent of Americans whose cars were stolen or broken into failed to secure their vehicles properly. Vehicle thefts and break-ins can be avoided. A safety-conscious attitude and the activation

of an anti-theft system can avoid damage and worries. Always pull out the ignition key, even when you are away for only a short time, like when getting gas. Only then is the anti-theft device activated. Also, remember to let the steering wheel lock by clicking it into place. Always close windows, doors, the trunk, the sunroof and the gas cap, even if you are only away from the vehicle for a short time. A locked gas cap makes it difficult for a thief to steal gas.

McQuistion, commanding general of the U.S. Army Sustainment Command, returned to her previous duty station to officiate the ceremony. “It’s great to be back in Kaiserslautern, Germany,” McQuistion said. “Colonel Chris Roscoe and Command Sergeant Major Bryan Kroontje are no strangers to U.S. Army Europe and the 21st Theater Sustainment Command, but commanding the 405th AFSB will definitely be a different perspective for you and a great opportunity for all your experience as you assume the command team mantel together again.” As the outgoing command team, Green and Sharpe both attributed the success of the 405th AFSB to the people who

worked under their leadership. “As Gen. (Creighton) Abrams taught us, people are not in the Army, they are the Army. These last two years as the brigade commander, have only affirmed that not only our Soldiers, but also our Department of the Army and local national civilians remain our greatest strength. Men and women who are willing to put their heart and soul into accomplishing a mission are absolutely essential,” Green said. Roscoe, the incoming commander, has served more than 25 years in the U.S. Army. He previously served as the 21st TSC distribution management chief and the support operations officer in charge of the Current Operations Integration Cell. “I am proud to be joining the Army Materiel Command team. I hope to make the organization proud. I look forward to working with the 21st TSC, USAREUR and the U.S. Army Africa Command, and I think it’s going to be a great term,” Roscoe said. “Command Sgt. Maj. James E. Spencer and I know that you are the absolute right team to take this command to the future, to build on its past successes and take it to new heights,” McQuistion said.

Ramstein bazaar pays it forward The dictionary gives a definition of the word “welfare” as “for the benefit of all.” The Ramstein Officers’ Spouses Club believes wholeheartedly in the welfare of the KMC. In this case, the word “welfare” defines how ROSC gives back over the entire year for the benefit of all. ROSC plans, organizes and executes the annual Ramstein Welfare Bazaar. Every penny of the funds raised from the previous year’s bazaar is channeled back into the community to help in the coming year. Last year, money raised from the bazaar totaled more than $271,000. These funds are currently being distributed by ROSC throughout the 2012 year. A large portion has already been given away to military spouses and college and high school students in the way of scholarships. ROSC wanted to share a few of the many examples of how it has been giving back to the military community. One beneficiary of funds from the Ramstein Welfare

Bazaar is the Lumberjacks and the Lady Lumberjacks lacrosse team. Youth lacrosse is a new sport in the Kaiserslautern community and open to all ages and nationalities. Lacrosse is a centuries old sport invented by Native Americans. It is relatively new in Germany and spreading quickly. ROSC’s donation helped to purchase much needed sports equipment for the upstart teams. Felicia Raymundo’s eighth-grade science class at Ramstein Middle School is another example of how ROSC is paying it forward. The school’s science department received funds from ROSC to purchase new electronic balance scales, replacing other scales that were more than 20 years old. “Science in our school is important. These scales gave students a chance to try many hands-on experiments,” Raymundo said. Officials at the school hope the new scales will help inspire students to enter the fields of science, technology,

engineering and math. Armed Forces Against Drunk Driving also received a donation from ROSC to help prevent drunken driving in the KMC. Month of the Military Child, the Fisher House and many other organizations have also benefited from bazaar funds. This is a very small sample of the many ways funds raised from the bazaar have benefited the military community. To take part in ROSC’s goal to pay it forward, sign up to volunteer at this year’s 48th annual Ramstein Welfare Bazaar. The bazaar takes place Sept. 13 to 16. Volunteers who donate a minimum of one four-hour shift or bake eight dozen homemade treats will receive a special invitation to this year’s exclusive Red Carpet Shopping Event, where volunteers will have a chance to shop before the public grand opening. One Airman’s road to bouncing back, getting fit by Airman 1st Class Trevor Rhynes 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs “For me, failing my PT test in December may have been the best thing to ever happen to me,” said Lt. Col. Isaac Davidson, U.S. Air Forces in Europe deputy chief of USAFE services. With help from God, friends and family he went through a twomonth long change, which led him to being the best person he’s ever been, he said. He failed due to a waist measurement. Accepting his outcome, Davidson went on to prepare for his retest by working out that same day with a friend. His friend heard about the test and offered him support. “He shared his story with me one morning in the gym, rather than feel sorry for him and throw a pity-party, I asked him if he’d be willing to join me as a workout partner during the new year,” Lt. Col. Uduak Udoaka, 380th Expeditionary Mission Support Group deputy commander said through email. “He did and almost every weekday for a few months we met and worked out to some ‘crazy’ routines. They were a blend of P90X, Insanity, CrossFit and anything interesting I found on YouTube the night before.” Another friend of Davidson’s, Master Sgt. Jamal Yussuf, services and plans readiness manager, USAFE A1 also offered help. “We saw each other at the gym and

one thing led to another, he needed the help and as a personal trainer it was easy for me to offer it,” said Yussuf. “All Airmen need help in one area or another; (we all) embrace the motto of the ‘wingman’ no matter what, we are all in this together professionally, personally or spiritually.” This Airman with 28 years in service was ready to retest after two months — scoring a 98.7. “I wouldn’t have been able to do this without the help I’ve received through prayer,” he said. “In my prayers I promised not to take credit for God’s work, that I would give him credit for the people he sent to help me through this, like my wife and my friends.” Davidson feels people should take an active approach to helping others, as opposed to a passive approach. “I think we’ve grown up in a society that feels comfortable just offering help,” Davidson said. “Just asking someone if they need help isn’t enough. Normally people aren’t going to come back to you and say ‘you asked if I needed help, well here I am.’ “In situations where we see that someone might be struggling, we need to react the same way you would if someone got injured in battle,” he said. “You don’t ask them if they need help. You react, you get them the proper care.” Although this approach isn’t common, Davidson said he is trying to change that. “We’re not used to that in our society, we decide ‘that’s their private

life, if they want help, they can ask for help,’” he said. “We have to forget about their privacy, if they need help, they need help. Only then will people go for it, because that person who is offering their help really knows them.” The mental, physical and social pillars of resiliency also played a role in Davidson’s life. “I wake up at 5 (a.m.) every morning to go to the gym, in addition to working out, I am socializing with someone outside of my immediate circle, a friend who I’m working out with and we talk about things from family life to work,” said Davidson. “I also stopped having to worry, the bad news was turning into good news. I was losing weight on a consistent basis and was feeling better about myself.” He said he couldn’t have done any of this without the support of the people in his life. Davidson’s wife changed their diet and started cooking healthier meals, his personal trainer kept him motivated during workouts and his boss supported his need to get in shape, giving him the opportunity to inspire others, said Udoaka. With a new outlook on a healthier lifestyle, Davidson routinely helps those around him with their fitness goals. “I’m participating in a core group, a small group that brings people with common interests together,” he said. “I would share my experience with this group, which met once a week in the gym where we

would work out, then talk about things going on in our daily lives.” Besides meeting with a group once a week, he exercises with people in his immediate life as well. “Lt. Col. Davidson is helpful and very engaged with his family, extended Air Force family and community as a whole,” Yussuf said. “He is engaged in the fitness part of his subordinates’ life and encourages them as he knows what it takes to come through. He passes his positive outlook and synergy to others.” In addition to offering help to his peers and those who work for him, he offers his advice to anyone who will listen. “Pay attention to those around you, jump into someone’s life if you see them struggle,” said Davidson. “I’ve thought about how this can be so effective and it’s because there is no criticism when you tell someone to follow you, things get done. People who were alone now have someone they know they can confide in, because they know they can trust those people who are being active in offering their help.” With Davidson’s PCS on the horizon, he hopes to bring this mentality to his next base as well. “I want people to know they can go to others for help, or for people to get comfortable actively offering help,” he said. “Look at me, for example ... I failed my test and now I may be the best person I’ve ever been. I had so much help around me, it would be impossible not to succeed with them.”

Sirks called his younger brother who upon hearing the news was somber and quiet, he said. His brother notified the rest of the family while Sirks made a call to his supervisor. “I told Hannigan I didn’t want anyone knowing about this from my work center until I was 100 percent certain it was cancer, even though the chances were very high,” Sirks said. “Hannigan is one of the most trustworthy people I know and he didn’t tell a soul. Eventually, we had to notify our chain of command, but that was a necessity.” Originally, he didn’t tell anyone because he wasn’t sure if it was cancer and he didn’t want to make it a big deal, Sirks said. “There were still a very small number of people I had told,” he said. “For me, I wanted to plan out very carefully how I was going to handle this. You only get one chance

Kaiserslautern American to break the news that you have cancer.” He thought about it, then chose to keep the matter private. “I didn’t want people to treat me differently in the work environment,” Sirks said. “People tend to be easier on those who are going through difficult times. For me, the more I enforce higher standards on myself, the more I tend to accomplish.” Enforcing those standards allowed him to push himself physically, his wife said. “Since his diagnosis he has not wanted any handouts or to be given special opportunities due to his cancer,” Molly said. “He has been insistent in working out and staying fit, not wanting to stay on a long profile. He even took the option of taking his (physical training) test earlier than was necessary.” After making his recovery, Sirks was able to attend Airman Leadership School on Kapaun Air Station.

Kristofer Sirks, 86th Communications Squadron “My mantra, so to speak, was staying positive and not to have excuses,” Sirks said. “The moment you expect people to start doing you favors, or go easy on you, is the moment you’ve compromised what you are capable of accomplishing.” Battling back from cancer has changed Sirks personally and professionally. “Now, he is able to let stress roll off him and involve himself in relaxing activities, such as bike rides, reading a book and just enjoying the sun,” Molly said. “Before his diagnosis, he was always very stressed and anxious from work, but now he seems more able to adapt and use stressors to improve his behaviors, rather than to inhibit his productivity.” “The change I saw in Sirks wasn’t one that you’d expect from someone who was just diagnosed with cancer,” said Hannigan, now a technical sergeant who works with the 86th Communications Squadron systems control branch training NCOIC.

“He was more driven, determined and willing to help out with any mission requirements. In other words, his diagnosis did not faze him in a negative way, it challenged him to raise the standard for himself.” This is the first time Sirks has shared his experiences with anyone outside of his immediate circle. He said he hopes fellow Airmen will stay positive, disciplined and hold themselves to a higher standard while going through their own issues. “I would have had a much harder time without my wife, family and friends,” he said. “Sometimes, it’s important that we get the word out. Difficult times can be turned over on themselves if you take the right approach, use (that experience) as a tool to better yourself, not as a way to justify lowering expectations.” Sirks has been in remission for four months and has sewn on his current rank of staff sergeant after earning the John Levitow Award as the ALS top graduate for class 2012-5.

Local teen named garrison’s Youth of the Year by Mindy Campbell USAG Kaiserslautern Public Affairs Military children often have a unique story to tell. Michael Lawson, 16, said he hopes to share that story from a unique platform as the 2012 Boys & Girls Club Youth of the Year for U.S. Army Garrison Kaiserslautern. “Military kids are unique in their own way,” he said. “They have their own story to tell.” Michael, who will be a senior in the fall at Kaiserslautern High School, is a true example of an extraordinary young man recognized by the Boys & Girls Clubs of America for his sound character, leadership skills and willingness to give back to the community, said Vicki Brown, program supervisory specialist at the garrison’s Child, Youth and School Service’s Landstuhl’s Youth Center. “From a leadership position, he has been involved in so many different things and been successful with them all,” Brown said. “It is nice to see him get Youth of the Year and to be recognized for all he has done.” Since 1947, the award program has recognized teens for outstanding service to the club, their local communities and their families. The judging criteria also include strong academics, morals, goals and public speaking abilities, according to the BGCA. In addition to winning the Youth of the Year title, Michael was named his high school’s Athlete of the Year, where he participates in cross coun-

try, wrestling and track. He was also named as one of two U.S. Army Europe representatives for the Army Teen Panel and participated in the Installation Command Europe’s Youth Leadership forum. Michael serves as the vice president of the Landstuhl Keystone Club and will also serve as his school’s senior class president and student body vice president. Brown said Michael deserves to be named Youth of the Year for all that he has accomplished and his leadership role within the teen community. “This past year, Michael has been a driving force with the Keystone Club by motivating others,” Brown said. “From leading the Keystone Club to breaking track records, once Michael sets his mind on something he accomplishes it.” For Michael, his hard work is well worth it. “I consider the fact that this is my community and anything that I can do to benefit my own community is to benefit me,” said Michael, who has lived in Germany at different times for 13 years. “I will be living in this community so I’ll do these things to benefit myself and everyone else that is living here.” Regional winners can receive a $10,000 scholarship and compete nationally. National winners may earn up to $50,000 for school. The BGCA will modify the Youth of the Year program next year. Currently, military teens compete against others back in the U.S. Next year, the military teens will compete in their own category and one will be named Military Youth of the Year.

Currently, Michael plans on attending college, but is unsure of what he wants to study. He said he is leaning toward following in his father’s footsteps, who is the deputy commander at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center, and becoming a doctor. He is also interested in applying to U.S. Military Academy at West Point, where his father is an alumnus. Michael credits much of his success to the Landstuhl Youth Center and its staff. “I can definitely vouch for it as being one of the best in Europe, if not overseas,” Michael said. “A lot of the credit should go to the youth advisers here at the youth center. They really gave me the opportunities. They informed me about Youth of the Year and they informed me about Army Teen Panel. They really got me moving.”

Ramadan:

The Islamic Month of Fasting Ramadan, the Islamic month of fasting, begins today with the sighting of the new moon. One may ask, “Why the uncertainty of the start and end of Ramadan?” Ramadan is the ninth month on the Islamic calendar, which is based on the lunar system. The months on the lunar calendar begin and end with the sighting of the new moon. Because of this, the beginning of Ramadan rotates throughout every month of the standard Gregorian calendar from year to year. Muslims all over the world look forward to Ramadan. The entire month is spent fasting, praying and reading the Quran. In fact, Ramadan is a month in which Muslims commemorate the Quran. The Ramadan fast is applicable to all Muslims who have reached the age of puberty. The fast begins daily at dawn and continues until sunset. During the daylight hours, those who are fasting must abstain from food, drinks and intimate relationships. Immediately after sunset, those observing the fast are required to break the fast by eating and drinking; however, one is not to overindulge in these activities. While the daylight hours are spent fasting, much of the night is spent in prayer and reading the Quran. The Ramadan fast is for the beneﬁt of the “total person” — spiritually, mentally and physically. While fasting, a Muslim is conscious of the need to appreciate and respect both mankind and the outer world as creations of the almighty God. Three days of celebration and thanksgiving follow the completion of the month of Ramadan. This celebration is known as Eid al-Fitr. This fast-breaking celebration will begin Aug. 19, depending on the sighting of the new moon, with an early-morning congregational prayer service. For more information, call Chaplain (Capt.) With the echo of gunﬁre still hanging in the air, Soldiers moved to engage two snipers: one hidden in a tree-house type nest, the other on a small hill above the six-man squad. Splitting into two groups, the squad simultaneously attacked and “neutralized” the two snipers on different sides of the road where the squad was conducting a foot patrol. Immediately after the skirmish, the squad searched the “killed” or “captured” role-playing snipers as quiet returned to the woods and the smoke of battle dissipated. This scenario is one of many for the Army Reserve Soldiers of the 7th Warrior Training Brigade during their monthly battle assembly. “This (exercise) is for leaders to learn how to train,” said Army Command Sgt. Maj. Steve Schwartz, 42, 2nd Battalion, 7th Warrior Training Brigade, 7th Civil Support Command, U.S. Army Reserve. As a Total Army School System unit, the 7th WTB conducts professional military education for active and reserve component ofﬁcers through the Command and Staff College Intermediate Level Education course. Soldiers of the Army Reserve assigned to the 7th WTB attend monthly battle assemblies to retain and refresh their instructional certifications, as well as their tactical military skills. During July’s battle assembly, more than 30 7th WTB Soldiers and their command leadership were tested through Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear simulated training exercise lanes, or STX lanes. “It’s good, holistic training,” said Army Sgt. Anthony Davis, Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 7th WTB, 7th CSC. “(It) gets us out of the office.” After the first squad moved through the roleplaying sniper’s “kill zone” they then had to react to an ambush from the “OPFOR” or opposition force, further up the road. “It was good. I was surprised they had OPFOR out there. I think that was a good thing,” said Army Spc. After clearing the first two STX lanes, the squad continued until their observer/controller dropped a smoke canister in the road to simulate a chemical attack. As the soda-can sized container spewed thick green plumes of green smoke the squad moved quickly into the brush adjacent to the road and donned their gas masks. Army Staff Sgt. Derrick Wilson, 7th WTB, 7th CSC, and the lead group’s squad leader, said one of the “improves” for his team would be to work on communication, such as hand and arm signals when they move from point to point. Once they donned their gas masks in the midst of heavy smoke and noise of gunfire, verbal communication was a challenge. Wilson regrouped his squad again. Next, they moved forward thru the woods, wearing their gas masks, toward their final objective — a small, ordinary concrete building with only one room with only one purpose — a gas chamber with real tear gas. Once inside, the Soldiers cleared and checked the seal of their respective masks before they executed jumping jacks. The troops then removed their masks for a few moments to experience the effects of the gas, before they exited the building. Immediately after the effects of the gas subsided the squad came together for the last time to conduct an after action review. The AAR was lead by their Observer/Controller, Army Staff Sgt. Charcoal burner festival

by Petra Lessoing 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs he community of Fischbach will hold its 29th annual charcoal burner festival today to Sunday, and Wednesday to July 28. The event will take place at a clearing in the woods, called the “Schinnertal.” Visitors can experience the traditional burning of charcoal, listen to live music, eat grilled specialties and buy charcoal. Charcoal burners will pile up a charcoal kiln with 30 to 35 meters of charcoal and light it with the embers from a campﬁre. The kiln will start glowing from the inside out. The charcoal burners will supervise the burn for six to 10 days. Afterward, the pile collapses and the larger charcoal pieces are raked and chopped up, and everything is collected and packaged. One pile may turn into about 80 to 100 bags of charcoal, which visitors can buy.

The fest will begin at 7 p.m. today with the christening of the kiln by this year’s godfather. The food specialty this year will be “wurstsalat” (sausage salad) and fried potatoes. At 7 p.m. Saturday, the musical

program will begin with Wolfgang & Horst, and a meal of ham and potato salad will be offered. On Sunday, activities will begin with an ecumenical worship service at 11 a.m. The daily dish will be

an ox on the spit. Monday and Tuesday will not feature any festivities, but the beverage stand will be open to visitors who wish to view the burning charcoal on the kiln. At 4 p.m. Wednesday, the children’s vacation program with games will start. Registration will be held at 3:45 p.m. at the fest location. At 7 p.m., the ﬁrst keg of beer will be tapped, a roast will be served and the band Mabees will play. On Thursday, the U.S. Air Forces in Europe Band Wings of Dixie will start performing at 7 p.m. Musical entertainment will continue at 7 p.m. July 27 with Wolfgang & Horst, and a night walk will take place for children at 8 p.m. On July 28, the charcoal burner schnaps hidden underneath the kiln will be dug out, starting at 6 p.m. During this time, the Happy Dance Duo will entertain the crowd and chicken and other grilled specialties will be served. he annual lake festival at Lake Ohmbachsee will take place today through Sunday. For three days, the lake will transform into a large, natural stage with lights, music and entertainment. Seventeen bands of various styles will entertain visitors on three stages around Ohmbachsee. The mayor of the SchönenbergKübelberg Union Community will open the lake fest at 7 p.m. today. Bands to perform in the evening will be Insanity, die Dicken Kinder, Firma Holunder XXL and Elliot. At around 1:15 a.m. Saturday, the musical performances will come to an end.

On Saturday, bands will play from 4 p.m. until 2 a.m. Sunday. Visitors can listen to the bands Impact, 7ty Proof, Smokin’ Strings and Bruise. Saturday’s highlight will be a torch light ride of about 20 boats across the lake at 10:30 p.m., followed by the lake illumination at 10:45. Sunday’s activities will begin with music by the Saar-Pfalz-Express, which will perform from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Bands playing in the afternoon include In!Music, VanTobis and MEP. At night, Changes featuring Brass Connection, Peaches & Cream, die Toten Ärzte and Soundvision will play for the crowd. Also, pre-registered teams can race dragon boats Saturday and Sunday. A children’s program will also be offered starting at noon Sunday, featuring games, a bouncy castle, face painting, slack lining, swing carts and bobby carts. Ramstein Rogues rugby club prepares for new season Story and photo by Airman 1st Class Trevor Rhynes 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Blood, sweat and mud is rubbed deep into the shorts, jersey and socks of the players — standing on the opposing sides of these beasts feels like facing a brick wall. When two teams totaling 30 men of equal size and stature take the ﬁeld, nothing else can be heard but the grunts and cracks when they collide — the men are ﬁghting for a ball and a match on the pitch is 80 minutes of hell. It’s a brutal sport and one like no other — this is rugby. “After a match it feels like you have been through about 15 full-on car crashes,” said Matt McKee, head coach of the Ramstein Rogues with more than 30 years of rugby experience. The Rogues consists of host nation players, British Royal Air Force and U.S. military Soldiers and Airmen from the Kaiserslautern area. After completing an undefeated 2011 season in the Division III German National Rugby-Bundesliga, the team will be moving up to Division II in the Southern conference this fall to compete against such cities as Frankfurt, Munich and Luxembourg City. The team has players of all experience levels, several of the returning players were all-Army and

Practices take place from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays at the 435th Construction and Training Squadron rugby pitch and the team is still looking for players of any skill level for the upcoming season. Practices consist of warm-up drills, cardio, tackling drills, setting drills and basic form drills. “This is a great turnout for a pre-season practice,” said Clive French, coach for the Rogues who will be leaving shortly. “It’s good to see some new faces.”

During practices, the coaches try to team up experienced players with those who have less experience as a way to help newer players build team dynamics, French said. The Rogues have an A team, B team and a women’s team, which will compete in different leagues this season. McKee said there are always opportunities for growth throughout the season. Players on the B team will have the opportunity to move up if they continue to show improvement at practice. “Teams are not picked based on talent alone and we try hard not to show any favoritism to any one player,” French said. Last year, when it came down to the ﬁnal game, the coaches told the players the A team was still not decided, which gave A-team players the drive to play harder and B-team players the chance to step up and play in a big match. This is where the coaches and players have turned the Ramstein Rogues club into a family. “Everyone gets along, hangs out together, holidays together,” French said. He said home matches played at the Queidersbach Sportplatz are typically a great social event — families, friends and spouses can be seen hanging out together and barbecuing at the games. Ramstein Youth Center hosts football camp by Airman 1st Class Trevor Rhynes 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs

he Ramstein Youth Center, along with 18 other volunteers, hosted a football camp July 9 to 12 at Donnelly Park. The camp was designed for skill levels from the ages of 9 to 17. The camp taught the participants football techniques while also placing an emphasis on proper workouts. “This camp showed youngsters from ages 9 to 17 what it’s like to play football,” said Col. Mike Monson, head coach and 86th Mission Support Group commander. “There are kids who have been playing for many years and we have some who haven’t played before.” Monson said teaching the athletes life skills was as important as bettering their football skills. Monson and the rest of the coaching staff incorporated a different theme for each day’s practice to positively affect players’ attitudes. “We have a different ‘word of the day’ each practice,” he said. “(Tuesday’s) word was ‘hustle.’ We are trying to teach the kids no matter what’s happening that you should be trying your hardest no matter what. We want them in that mindset even if there aren’t any coaches watching them.” For one of the participants, the camp taught him what he needed to prepare for this year’s season. “I picked up on a lot of fundamentals on offense

and defense that’ll help me in the upcoming season,” said Robert Navarro, a Ramstein High School junior who has been playing football since his fourth grade year. “I’ve learned a lot about teamwork, working with guys you’ve never met. You build a special bond with wide receivers and quarterbacks, doing

things like learning our timing.” This year’s football camp gave Monson and others the chance to pass on their knowledge. “I’ve been a youth coach for about six or seven years, so this is a chance for me to give back to the (KMC) and to the kids,” Monson said.

Sports Physicals

The 86th Medical Group will be conducting sports physicals by appointment on Aug. 11 for youth ages 6 to 18 years old enrolled to the Ramstein Clinic. The physicals will be provided at the Ramstein Clinic, Bldg. 2114 (main clinic) from 8 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. and are valid for one year. Appointments can be made beginning Wednesday by calling 479-CARE (2273) or 06371-46-2273. The 86th MDG will provide all necessary paperwork for this examination. Annual health screening physicals are required for students who wish to participate in sports. Families need to arrive 30 minutes prior to the scheduled appointment to complete paperwork and the necessary pre-examination testing. If a child wears glasses, bring them to the appointment and have your children wear comfortable clothing, such as a T-shirt and a pair of shorts. Area Operations Manager Pulaski Barracks Description/Job Summary: The Area Operations Manager is responsible for ensuring operational success throughout the Kaiserslautern USO by supporting both the military community and USO center operations. Responsibilities/Duties • Plan, coordinate, and execute both small and large (3,000-person) community outreach programs. • Seek, develop, maintain, and grow relationships with persons, organizations, groups, and corporations that support our many programs. • Contribute to the development and execution of a programs budget. • Manage all aspects of grant funding to include solicitation, planning, execution, and stewardship reporting. • Support all USO staff in the execution and reporting of all programs. • Highlight the USO and its many promotions/giveaways during live radio interviews on a weekly basis. • Manage, review, maintain, and correct the programs reporting database. Required Qualifications: • Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration, Marketing, or related field. • 2 years of event planning and management experience. • Exceptional interpersonal, organization, and time management skills. • Ability to work collaboratively with teams and to manage a volunteer workforce with integrity and professionalism. • Demonstrated initiative/self-motivation, attention to detail, and accuracy. • Demonstrated proficiency in written and oral communications as well as knowledge of various software programs including but not limited to Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook. • Willingness and ability to work non-standard hours (evenings, holidays and weekends) as needed. • Willingness and ability to tow and operate a mobile canteen trailer. • Must be a strong advocate of the USO’s mission to support active duty military and their families. • Public speaking experience is preferred. • Must be able to lift and carry items weighing up to 50 pounds • Must have USAREUR driver’s license and be able to drive a van to deliver USO materials to special events Details: • This position is located at the USO Administration Office on Pulaski Barracks. • Preference will be given to local candidates within commuting distance. • Relocation assistance is not provided for this position. • Resume and cover letter are required for full consideration.
