SECAF visits Lajes By Ricky Baptista 65th Air Base Group Public Affairs Office LAJES FIELD, Azores – Secretary of the Air Force Deborah Lee James experienced Lajes “In the Fight” capabilities first hand during her visit to Lajes Field, Azores, Portugal, July 11, 2016. Lajes was the first stop for the Secretary on her 10-day trip of Europe and the Baltics. She will be traveling to eight countries including Ukraine, the Netherlands and Iceland. The overarching theme of the Secretary’s trip is to meet with partner nations to discuss mutual cooperation in combating common threats. “I have divided my time between two responsibilities, one, the Washington D.C. scene focused on budget and policy matters, and two, outside of Washington D.C. where I get to go out in the country and around

the world and see the real Air Force, the front line Air Force in action and almost always in cooperation with our partners around the world,” she said. During a standing room only Lajes “All-Call,” conducted at the Top of the Rock Commons, James described the experience of her visit. “I am extremely impressed with the mission, I am extremely impressed with all of the people, you are hitting it out of the ball park in every single way and you have been doing this despite what has been a lot of turbulence,” said James. This was James’ first visit to the installation where she spent a day touring several units, taking the opportunity to meet with commanders, superintendents, local nationals and Airmen of the 65th Air Base Group. “I am convinced that Lajes is today and will remain an important location for us as well as for our NATO allies,” she said.

WASHINGTON (AFNS) — Gen. David L. Goldfein was sworn in as the Air Force’s 21st chief of staff by Air Force Secretary Deborah Lee James during a ceremony at the Pentagon on July 1. As the Air Force’s most senior uniformed leader, Goldfein is responsible for ensuring the 660,000 activeduty, Guard, Reserve and civilian Airmen under his command are fully trained and equipped. He also joins the Joint Chiefs of Staff as an adviser to the secretary of defense, National Security Council and the president of the United States.

“The Air Force is going to be relying on your determination, General Goldfein, to improve readiness, to improve our modernization, and most importantly — always at the top of the list — taking care of our Airmen,” James said. “It is a huge responsibility, it’s also an honor, and it’s also a great privilege, and I have every confidence that you are going to take our Air Force to new heights.” One of Goldfein’s first acts as chief of staff was to make a pledge to his Airmen. “(This is) my commitment to you — to work every day to give you everything I’ve got, to leave nothing on the table, to remain laser-focused

Dual-citizen Kingfish wins two golds COMMENTARY

By William Hendrickson U.S. Air Force in Europe BRNO, Czech Republic — Eleven year-old Andrew Hendrickson swam away with two gold and two silver medals at the Czech National Swim Competition in Brno, Czech Republic, June 25 through 26, 2016. Andrew swims with the Kaiserslautern Kingfish Swim Team at Ramstein Air Base, and because of his dual citizenship was able to qualify for the Nationals of the Czech Republic. His first gold was the 50-meter freestyle, with a time of 28.19 seconds. He followed that with a second gold in the 100 meter butterfly and two silvers in the 200 and 400 meter individual medley — a combination of butterfly, back stroke, breast stroke and freestyle. on warfighting excellence, to find the opportunity in every challenge, to treat team building as a contact sport, and to be worthy of this honor,” he said. “And I can’t wait to get started. Fight’s on!”

Hendrickson’s medals are payoff for a lot of hard work and dedication from swimming almost 400 miles in the Ramstein pool last year, and the result of a strong support system. His mother Daniela drove him to early morning and evening practices while his Kingfish head coach Karina Plocek gave countless hours of instruction to the 110-member team. Kingfish president Bonnie Bassett and volunteers also made it possible for the team to be a part of the European Forces Swim League. The Kingfish and EFSL provide an excellent program to develop young swimmers’ skills in a friendly environment. The team is a great opportunity for swimmers to develop a lifelong, healthy activity and challenge themselves mentally and

physically. It is hard not to spot the high correlation between swim team members and student honor roll members. In addition to teaching technical skills, Chip Bassett, Kingfish coach and Sembach Elementary School principal, and the rest of the staff teach perseverance and time management. Every swim meet is a race against the clock and every practice is time away from something else, so students learn the value of time management, which translates to activities outside the pool. If you have a child who likes swimming, incoming Kingfish president Mr. John Golden says that team tryouts will be in August at the Ramstein pool. Watch for information on kingfishswimteam.com.

AFOSI 5th FIR welcomes new commander Story and photos by Staff Sgt. Timothy Moore 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Members of the Air Force Office of Special Investigations’ 5th Field Investigations Region came together to welcome their new commander June 29, at Ramstein Air Base, Germany. Col. Shan Nuckols took command of the 5th FIR from Col. James Hudson during a change of command ceremony presided by Brig. Gen. Keith Givens, commander of AFOSI, Quantico, Virginia. “This is our premier wing, supporting our premier region, supporting what I think is the premier [major command] in the United States Air Force, [U.S. Air Forces in Europe],” Givens said. “Not only is the mission very important here but just as important is protecting the Airmen who live and work in this [area or responsibility]. It’s been a very dangerous AOR over the past year. … There’s no mistake of the caliber of the officers sitting on this stage today. Many of our commanders have come through [the 5th FIR], and [because of] the caliber of these two officers, [they] could easily be standing in my position. That’s how important OSI sees this MAJCOM.” Givens highlighted some

of the achievements the 5th FIR accomplished while under Hudson’s command. Hudson led the 5th FIR to decrease the completion time of investigations from an average of 180 to 75 days, not only focusing on getting the information to commanders quicker but also alleviating the stress of Airmen involved in investigations. Givens also recognized Hudson’s efforts in protecting children of the region. Hudson’s team not only headed the investigation that led to the imprisonment of a child molester in the Kaiserslautern Military Community but also another multi-child abuser in England. He also started the Internet Crimes Against Children program, which was designed to battle the online activity of predators. “Almost everything you’ve touched here has been gold,” Givens said to Hudson. “I can’t thank you enough for your leadership here.” As with any permanent change of station, there is joy and sadness in moving on. “I could easily spend an hour going unit by unit across the AOR, but in the interest of time, I would like to just give a special thanks to the men and women of region 5 spread across two continents, multiple time zones, 28 units

They are region 5.” Givens also spoke of his expectations for Nuckols and the 5th FIR under his new leadership. “[Nuckols] is another allstar coming here to USAFE,” Givens said. “Every command he’s been in, he’s been number one. … I wish you the

Attention dog owners

Due to recent events, the Landstuhl police authorities want to stress that dog owners must ensure their dogs are walked on a leash within a city or community. Outside a city or community, a dog has to be put on a leash immediately when other people approach. There were complaints brought to the police, especially in the district Melkerei, that dogs are walked without a leash and dog feces are not removed. Dog owners must also make sure that public roads, paths, squares and parks are kept clean. Dog owners are responsible for the disposal of dog excrements. Dog owners who disregard regulations can be fined.

Airmen tackle Mudless Mudder obstacle course Story and photos by Senior Airman Nesha Humes 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs The 86th Airlift Wing hosted its third annual Mudless Mudder for resilience day at Ramstein Air Base July 8, 2016. More than 550 participants ran, jumped, swam, climbed and lowcrawled through the five-kilometer obstacle course. While the Mudless Mudder primarily focused on the physical domain of RUfit, it and the 86th AW Resilience Day allowed the 86th AW to foster resilience and camaraderie within the Kaiserslautern Military Community. “Resiliency day is important because team building is important,” said Tech Sgt. Antonio Oquendo, 86th Vehicle Readiness Squadron vehicle management NCO in charge. “Everything we do in the Air Force is about teams: Coming together during challenging physical activities brings us together in daily operations as well.” The 99 teams tackled 15 stations including a tire carry, rope walk, mud pit, pallet climb, monkey bars and container climb. Volunteer coordinator Master Sgt. Casey Woods, 1st Air and Space Communications Operations Squadron first sergeant, was happy with the success of the event. “Each team I saw worked together using everyone’s strengths to ensure the whole team succeeded,” Woods said. “It was great seeing so many folks out there accepting the challenges set before them and dominating them.” Senior Airman Larry Scott, 86th Material Maintenance Squadron asset manager journeyman and Mudless Mudder participant, enjoyed his first mudder and said it was pretty spectacular. “It builds squadron morale and camaraderie,” Scott said. “I worked with officers and people [from different units]. It was a great way for us to come together in one event, in a short amount of time. It was pretty fun.” The 786th Civil Engineer Squadron Explosive Ordnance Disposal technicians won the first place trophy for completing the race the fastest. As the participants approached the finish line, they were greeted with music, water balloons and water guns. “I loved it,” Oquendo said. “It helps getting to know each other on a different level, push each other and that translates to the mission. We had guys falling behind, we had to push them, pull through. That’s resiliency — pushing through, bouncing back and finishing strong as a team. That’s exactly what the obstacle course symbolized and a perfect way to represent resiliency day.”

37th AS lead joint airborne training, keep Airmen mission-ready

Airmen from the 2nd Air Support Operations Squadron prepare to board a C-130J Super Hercules during a Joint Airborne / Air Transportability Training exercise June 30, 2016, at Ramstein Air Base. These Airmen maintain their proficiency in working cohesively during real-world events by participating in JA/ATT exercises several times a month with the 37th Airlift Squadron.

Story and photos by Airman 1st Class Lane T. Plummer 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs The 37th Airlift Squadron carried approximately 300 Airmen from the 2nd Air Support Operations Squadron as well as a Container Delivery System in a C-130J Super Hercules and successfully dropped them over their destination during a Joint Airborne/Air Transportability Training exercise June 30, 2016, in Grostenquin, France. The 435th Contingency Response Group and the 37th Airlift Squadron

participate in JA/ATT training missions monthly to maintain mission readiness. These events allow the 37th AS to assess airfield capabilities for Airmen participating so when real-world events arise where these skill sets are required, they will be able to carry them out successfully. According to Capt. Doug Mabe, 37th AS pilot, the event is a form of confirmation to the Airmen participating. “These JA/ATTs are a way for us to validate our purpose for when these exercises turn into real-world

events,” said Mabe. “It’s a test of our communicative abilities as much as it is our individual skills, regardless of career field.” According to Staff Sgt. Derek Halverson, 435th Security Forces Squadron close precision engagement team leader and primary jumpmaster of the exercise, one of the obstacles Airmen wanted to overcome was the communication barriers that sometimes inhibit job effectiveness during real-world missions. “We want to assess our capabilities as a whole with multiple Air Force Specialty Codes, squadrons

and branches working hand in hand to fulfill mission requirements,” said Mabe. “This is another communication obstacle in the real world that we want to address. With these JA/ ATTs, we hope to strengthen our relationships to prevent as many communicative mishaps as we can in the operating world.” Upholding a standard of excellence is part of the tradition of the 37th AS, and with JA/ATT training missions, they are able to effectively employ air power and continue to develop their capabilities to complete the mission.

Ramstein wife earns Spouse of the Year award By Senior Airman Nesha Humes 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Giving back to the local community is one of the duties that come along with service to one’s country. There are some people, like Nicole Bridge, who don’t wear the uniform, but give back in an equally large way. After volunteering more than 1,200 hours to the local community, Bridge was awarded the distinguished title of the 2016 Joan Orr Air Force Spouse of the Year. Bridge, spouse of Tech. Sgt. Matthew J. Bridge, 521st Air Mobility Operations, Ramstein Air Base, Germany, devoted her time without monetary gain. “There are so many other things you’re receiving if you can get past the money side of it,” Bridge said. “The skills that you learn, the friends that you make, the difference that you make in the community, even if you make a difference in one person’s life; to me — that’s worth it.” A mother to one and three-yearold boys, Bridge oversaw and managed the Ramstein Enlisted Spouses’ Association as president. She organized 125 events, and generated $250,000 for distribution into the Kaiserslautern Military Community. Additionally, Bridge was elected as treasurer for the non-profit organization Americans Working Around the Globe and oversaw the allocation of $175,000. Bridge also assisted more than 25 new mothers as a national lactation consultant. She became a certified pre and post-natal personal trainer, teach-

ing more than fifty personnel how to safely exercise. However, the California-native hadn’t always been an active volunteer. It started four years ago, during the Bridges’ initial change of station. Pregnant with their first son, Bridge searched for work with flexible hours in their new German community. “I had worked full time, coaching a dance team and teaching at a dance studio,” Bridge said. “Once we moved overseas, I realized all those things I

was doing I wasn’t able to do or at least not right away.” Consequently, Bridge decided she had to change perspectives. “I struggled a lot with [the thought that] ’I’m not financially providing for my family’,” Bridge said. “I felt stuck and volunteering has alleviated that from me. It’s provided me a sense of well-being.” After starting out with the Ramstein thrift shop, Bridge stepped into the role of president of the RESA in 2014 and 2015 and began facilitating events. “It is really rewarding to be part of the background work, then step back and see how much it’s impacting everyone,” Bridge said. The thrift shop, for example, directly impacts the KMC by sending 80% of its profits from donated goods right back to base organizations such as booster clubs and award ceremonies. While working with various institutions, Bridge honed leadership, financial, business and organizational skills. In order to improve all the volunteers’ processes personally and professionally, Bridge attended an AWAG seminar. Bridge was later elected as treasurer for the non-profit organization in 2015 and 2016. “Our time in AWAG gave us many tools to take back home and implement into our organization,” said Jillian Romag, former RESA vice president, and AWAG member. “Some of the things we learned we were able to pass on to our members and their spouses, such as resume writing, volunteer appreciation and post-duty transitioning.”

Bridge strongly believes her acquired skills will pay off in the future. For now, she is grateful for all the support she has received. “I think the phrase ’It takes a village’ is true,” Bridge said. “I was in shock [when I received the news of winning the 2016 Joan Orr Air Force Spouse of the Year award]. It was a humbling experience. It made me sit down and think about who it took to even get to this level.” Bridge’s family’s, friends’, coworkers’ and mentors’ support helped her balance her role as a wife and mother, alongside being an active volunteer. “I would not have been able to volunteer the amount of hours I did without my village,” Bridge said. “It had nothing to do with me. I was fortunate enough to be elected into that leadership position and was surrounded by people that had the same vision who wanted to see everything to fruition.” Her husband, Tech. Sgt. Matthew Bridge believes her motivation was attributed to all the great people she worked with from various organizations. “I am completely in awe of her and unbelievably proud of her,” Matthew Bridge said. “Moving to a new location can be a tough transition. Nicole ventured out to make friends and give back to the community, but ended up with something far greater, which is a strong support system and friends who feel like family. I know she did not do this for recognition, but did it to make our community and Air Force better.”

New joint patient survey continues impact for patients By Chuck Roberts Landstuhl Regional Medical Center Public Affairs Outpatients at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center will begin seeing a new satisfaction survey sent to them soon after their appointment, but the impact will remain the same – changes and improvements happen as a direct result from patient feedback. The Joint Outpatient Experience Survey (JOES) is replacing the Army Provider Level Satisfaction Survey (APLSS) used by the Army, as well as outpatient surveys used by the Air Force and Navy. In areas such as the Kaiserslautern Military Community where a patient can be seen by an Air Force and/or Army provider for the same medical condition, JOES will provide a standardized customer service questionnaire regardless of the branch of service where the care was provided.

LRMC Patient Advocate Elaine Williams said JOES will help Military Health System leaders better evaluate patient satisfaction across all military branches, and as always will remain an important tool for LRMC leadership. “I can guarantee that the LRMC commander reads every last one of

lead to noticeable improvements for patients. LRMC improvements that were a direct result of patient satisfaction surveys include: • Wi-Fi was provided to patient waiting rooms at the Emergency Department and Pharmacy. • Patients’ comments about delays in receiving mammograms and MRIs

them,” Williams said, “because it lets us know what our patients are concerned about, and we want to exceed every patient’s expectations.” Williams said customer feedback and the extra revenue derived from patient satisfaction surveys

led to the purchase of new equipment and more prompt service. • Inpatients can now call the hospital dining facility and order a la carte from the menu. “Getting on the same page really benefits our patients,” said George

Sherman, Chief of LRMC Program Analysis and Evaluation, and he said having combined patient data will help standardize and improve the overall military health system. Sherman also reminds beneficiaries that JOES will continue to provide extra revenue that helps improve the patient experience at LRMC. The medical center receives up to $500 for each survey returned. That resulted in an extra $1.7 million for LRMC and its beneficiaries since March 2015. If all surveys had been returned for that time period, Sherman said the total could have been nearly triple that amount, leading to even more improvements for patients. “I love this new joint environment,” said Sherman. “It’s a good step in the right direction and a tangible way for patients to have a voice in improving their healthcare experience.”

Airman’s Attic gives back to community By Airman 1st Class Joshua Magbanua 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Clothes hang on racks waiting to be donned while shoes sit on the shelves ready for a new pair of feet to walk in them. Toys, cramped in boxes, wait for their new playmates to come and take them home, along with dishes, books, pottery, electronics and many other things which wait in the thrift shop for someone to grant them one more lease on life. The Airman’s Attic is a place where people go to donate things they didn’t need anymore. It is also a place where military members can come with their families to save money and get what they need, and where young Airmen volunteer to help their local community. On top of this, it is a place where Maria Reagan, Airman’s Attic volunteer supervisor, hopes people come and find a sense of belonging. “We want to show support for the young Airmen and Soldiers in the [Kaiserslautern Military Community],” said Reagan. “We’re here for them, we’re here to help them … we’re here for whatever they need.” The non-profit thrift shop is run by the KMC Top 3 organization and serves active-duty military members E-5 and below along with their families. Although the Airman’s Attic offers household goods and other items free of charge, Reagan wants people who come to the shop to discover something more. “We want them to feel that when they come to the Airman’s Attic that this is their home; this is a safe place,” said Reagan. “This is a place to gather, not just to come get free stuff.” The Airman’s Attic also offers dish kits which can be lent out for 60 days. The kits include pots, pans and cooking utensils which vary in number depending on the size of the family. The Airman’s Attic is a non-profit shop which is operated completely by volunteers. Senior Airman Nigel Lee, 86th Logistics Readiness Squadron traffic management office member, said volunteers are indispensable to the operations of the Airman’s Attic. “Without volunteers, we can’t even open,” said Lee who helps out regularly at the Airman’s Attic. “So that’s why I give them my spare time.” Lee said he enjoys volunteering at the Airman’s Attic and that it is an opportunity to serve the community. “I like volunteering here because it’s a great feeling helping out other Airmen and dependents that are in need

of items,” said Lee. “I would like to see other Airmen volunteer because that’s what the Airman’s Attic is all about: receiving and giving back to others.” Airmen do not need to devote a lot of time to volunteer; even a few minutes of their time will be a valuable contribution to the shop. “A lot of them [Airmen who volunteer] come during their lunchbreaks,” said Reagan. “We’ll take 20 minutes, even 20 minutes of checking IDs. We’ll train them when they come.” The volunteers at the shop do what they can to make customers feel comfortable and welcome, driven by empathy for those who are far from home. “We’ve been there; we’ve been young wives and we know what it’s like to be away from family,” said Reagan. “So we try to be more than just volunteers; we try to make this like a family atmosphere where people feel safe and want to come back.” Reagan feels the operations of the Airman’s Attic are not only significant to the morale and welfare of the troops, but also to the KMC mission. “It’s our way to give back to our community because we know the Airmen and Soldiers here are putting their lives on the line for the country,” said Reagan. “So this is how we feel we’re doing something for the mission, because we want you to have what you need; and if we can help you then we feel like we’ve done something.” Whether young Airmen move to Ramstein and need things for their home, are looking to help out in their community or just simply want to save money, Reagan wants them to know they have friends and family at the Airman’s Attic standing ready to help them out.

New CSM joins ‘Team 21’ By Sgt. Maj. Michael Pintagro 21st TSC Public Affairs The 21st Theater Sustainment Command welcomed a new senior enlisted leader and bid a fond farewell to his predecessor during a dynamic change of responsibility ceremony held July 8 at Panzer Field. Command Sgt. Maj. Alberto Delgado, a combat-tested logistician who served most recently as the Army Materiel Command operations and logistics sergeant major, replaced Command Sgt. Maj. Stanley O. Richards, who served as senior enlisted leader of the 405th Army Field Support Brigade for the past two years as well as the TSC’s top enlisted man since mid-March, during the afternoon ceremony. Around 150 Soldiers, Civilians and Family members joined key command and subordinate organizational leaders, German allies, and distinguished visitors from Wiesbaden to Grafenwoehr for the 45-minute ceremony. The outgoing command sergeant major, a key figure in major regional operations and events from Anakonda ‘16 and Southern European Sustainment Terrain Walk to the TSC Best Warrior Competition and Senior Leaders Forum, maintained a dizzying pace during his tenure with “Team 21.” Richards not only served simultaneously as a senior leader at brigade and command echelons but figured prominently in social and community activities like the European Sustainment Ball and RheinlandPfalz Tag. The Phenix City, Alabama, native will serve as logistics sergeant major at U.S. Army Africa headquarters in Vicenza, Italy, during his next assignment. Maj. Gen. Duane A. Gamble, the TSC commanding general, praised Richards’ performance and can-do spirit during his remarks. “He led from the front and set a great example,” Gamble said. “He inspired the Soldiers and the team around him to make mission. It’s been a privilege to have him as part of our team.” “Words can’t adequately express the gratitude I have for everything you’ve done,” he added. “You and (Richards’ wife) Jane performed flawlessly in everything you did, whether a mission or a social event. The enthusiasm and energy you brought to bear during the last 120 days made the team better in every way.” The CG also praised his incoming senior enlisted leader, expressing strong confidence in his expertise and leadership qualities. “What will help make him a great leader is his experience in the field,

in the dirt, in combat with Soldiers, accomplishing logistics missions in an expeditionary manner,” Gamble said, describing Delgado as ‘ideal for training, mentoring and inspiring Soldiers and advising commanders.’ “I consider myself, every officer, every NCO and every Soldier as well as our partners and enablers lucky to have a leader of his caliber. We’re in good hands.” The outgoing senior enlisted leader followed the general to the podium, thanking Gamble, the TSC staff, brigade command sergeants major and other helpful team mates, praising “Team 21” personnel and emphasizing key accomplishments during operations like Anakonda – a major Polishled multinational exercise showcasing allied interoperability, unity and resolve culminating in mid-June. “We were proud and gratified by what our team accomplished in Poland,” he said. “What the CG and I saw personally on the ground across Poland vindicated all our efforts and reminded us what an awesome team we lead and what we can achieve together with brother units, sister services, allies and partners.” After a strong endorsement of his successor, Richards closed with praise for team mates he grew “quite attached to” during his time at TSC headquarters, invoking the command motto in the process. “I know where I’ll turn if I need help with logistics,” he said. “I’ll never forget my time here and the great team

mates I served with, and I’ll never forget who’s ‘First in Support.’” Delgado thanked his CG, his predecessor and his Family for their consideration and support. “I’m honored and humbled to serve as the next 21st TSC senior enlisted leader,” the New York City native said. “General Gamble, I sincerely appreciate the trust you’ve placed in me, and the opportunity to serve as a key leader alongside such an awesome team and such a distinguished commander. I won’t let you down.” “I’ll do everything within my power to set the example for all our teammates to emulate,” he added. “I look eagerly forward to the next three years and everything we’ll accomplish together.” The incoming command sergeant major won’t need directions as he circulates the TSC “footprint.” Delgado served previously as garrison command sergeant major in Mannheim. He also served with a field artillery regiment based in Ansbach. The new TSC command sergeant major served not only as a senior staff sergeant major at AMC headquarters but previously as senior enlisted leader of the 82nd Sustainment Brigade, the U.S. Army Central Command Materiel Recovery Element Brigade and the 10th Special Forces Group Support Battalion. Prior to his tenure as a sergeant major, he held leadership positions from squad and small group leader to warehouse and facility manager to first sergeant. His missions carried him from such pre-

COOLING OFF K-TOWN

Summer is here!! I’m a Georgia girl and Georgia girls just do not do winter well. At least not this one. My husband assured me that I would acclimate, but I wasn’t so sure. However, I have noticed that the cold is less painful (even though it still lasts way too long) and not having an air conditioner in July and August is no longer fun.

Here are a few ways that you can keep cool during our ever so short German summer…

Food and drinks are available at the small café, but you are welcome to bring a cooler and snacks. Monte Mare Marketed more as a Wellness Center for adults, Monte Mare also offers a ton of fun for the kids. Indoor and outdoor pools and a wave pool make this a great choice.
