86 MDG EMTs receive revamped refresher course Story and photos by Senior Airman Devin Boyer 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs The 86th Medical Group’s simulation staff conducted refresher training for five emergency medical technicians in a revamped course at the simulation center, June 29. Medical technicians must take the refresher course every two years as part of their certification requirements. This spring, the Air Force changed the course significantly. “The traditional EMT course had long PowerPoint lessons and seven skills stations they were evaluated on,” said Master Sgt. Kimberly Taylor, 86 MDG EMT refresher course site coordinator. “For the skills See EMT COURSE, Page 2

Tip of the Week: It’s vacation time. Get enough sleep before a trip. Check vehicle fluid levels, headlights, brakes, warning signals belts, hoses, and tire pressure and condition.

“I was involved in a program like this at Sheppard, (Air Force Base, Texas),” Bolling said. “We had usually between 40 and 50 participants and about 10 coaches. It seemed to be something people enjoyed because it’s easier to run with a group, for most people. Plus, some people don’t really know what types of workouts to do (to improve their running).” The program teaches people a proper warm-up, workouts to build up mileage and increase speed, and a proper cool down. At the beginning of the program, running coaches have participants

complete a mock physical fitness assessment. Based on their results, particularly their run, participants are placed into groups with other individuals with similar run times. The groups allow for the training to be a little more challenging for each individual, while still giving them a team with whom they can meet and run. It is this flexibility in the program that opens it up to people of various levels of fitness and desires to get what they want out of the program. “It doesn’t matter what fitness level See RUNNING, Page 6

As their arms and legs feel heavier, chest and lungs start burning, and sweat runs into their eyes, thoughts of stopping springs to the front of many runners’ minds. However, for many people, including military members, they may have to keep going long after those thoughts appear. Whether they are good at it or not, running can be a chore for many people. With help from others,

that chore can become less tasking, maybe even enjoyable. That’s where the Ramstein Running Improvement Program comes in. Led by Capt. Charity Bolling, 86th Aerospace Medicine Squadron Aerospace and Operational Physiology Flight commander, the program is designed to help people who want to better their running to live a healthier lifestyle, for personal satisfaction, or to improve their run times for the physical fitness assessment. Though the eight-week program saw its Ramstein cohort begin on June 19, it has been proven to work.

stations, you would memorize the checklists, and perform the skills. It was found that people can memorize the skills, but sometimes when it came to putting to practice in real-world situations, some had difficulty.” Students are now given a scenario in which they must assess a patient and determine which skills to use to successfully assist the individual. “The new EMT course that the Air Force just recently switched over to has shorter lectures and more hands-on based training,” she added. “They now only get tested on two skills stations, which are medical and trauma patient assessment.” Each student used to complete their evaluation solo, but the new program allows students to work in teams. “So far we’re happy with it,” said Taylor. “The coordinators like the direction on how the course has gone especially working more as a team. You’re taking care of a patient with a partner and you’re managing the care of that patient together like you would in real world.” Just like the scenarios, the mannequins they trained on were also life-like. “This is my first time doing the EMT course with (simulated mannequins), a patient that can interact with you,” said Staff Sgt. Tyrone Shannon, EMT refresher course student. “Usually we do it with a regular mannequin that can’t talk or move, or a real person who you can’t do anything to. So now we can actually stick IVs, get responses and listen to respirations.” During the scenario, one

leg and continued doing so until a proper tourniquet was applied to it correctly. “This EMT refresher

update the training for future classes by getting feedback from the students on how to improve upon it.

Mentoring is for the total force by Secretary of the Air Force Public Affairs WASHINGTON — Chief Master Sgt. of the Air Force Kaleth O. Wright was a selfproclaimed undisciplined Airman during his first enlistment in the early 1990s…that is, until his mentor stepped in and provided the leadership he needed to set him on the right path. Though that intervention was more than two decades ago, the importance of mentors has not changed across the Air Force — the service is still dedicated to developing the total force into wellrounded, mission-focused leaders. “Leveraging the wisdom and experience of others enabled me to grow and achieve my goals faster,” said Chief Master Sgt. John Bentivegna, the Air Force Enlisted Force Development chief. “To this very day I have mentors who are both senior to me and who are peers, officers, civilians and enlisted.”

Force Staff Strategy concepts deputy director. Whether it be an enlisted, officer or civilian member a mentor can help them reach

their goals. Air Force mentors and mentees can connect on MyVector, a system on the Air Force Portal. “MyVector allows you

to connect with a mentor if you have someone in mind,” said Dr. Patricia McGill, the Competencies, Doctrine and Mentoring Branch Force Development Integration Division chief. “Or if you just don’t know how to get a mentor, you can use the matching capability.” Mentors can have four different roles: counselor, advocate, facilitator and coach, according to McGill. “If you want the mission to be successful, you have to cultivate your people,” McGill said. The Air Force’s mentor program focuses on the mentee, and pairs them with the best mentor match. Mobility Airmen’s ingenuity quickly reopens Rota airfield

Photo by Senior Airman Zachary Cacicia

A C-5M Super Galaxy, operated by the C-5M Formal Training Unit, approaches runway 01-19 for landing June 8 at Dover Air Force Base, Del. The C-5M is the largest transport aircraft operated by the U.S. Air Force and provides heavy intercontinental-range strategic airlift capabilities.

by Air Force Expeditionary Center Public Affairs Airmen assigned to Ramstein’s 521st Air Mobility Operations Wing quickly and safely responded to a C-5 Galaxy landing incident May 23 at Naval Station Rota, Spain, assuring minimal disruption to the airfield’s operations in support of Rapid Global Mobility. During approach, the C-5’s nose landing gear would not extend. The aircrew was able to land safely. However, after the crew and passengers were off the plane, the large aircraft remained stuck on the runway – essentially, shutting it down on a day when more than double the average air traffic was transiting Rota and several critically important missions hung in the balance. “There were a handful of jets on the ramp that were presidential support missions departing the next day,” said Col. Eric Hook, 521st Air Mobility Operations Group commander. “It was absolutely crucial to reopen the runway. Not only to support the presidential mission, but also aircraft, cargo and passengers transiting to European Command, Central

Command and even down to Africa Command.” While the cause of the incident is still under investigation, the team from the 725th Air Mobility Squadron had the diverse experience and training necessary to respond. Airmen assigned to Naval Station Rota consistently work with joint and coalition partners, which allowed them to collaborate for the situation. “We had just table topped this [type of scenario] with our Navy counterparts about a month before, so we knew what roles we would all have in an aircraft recovery along with what equipment we had,” said Master Sgt. Kory Newgard, a production superintendent for the 725 AMS. “They were super responsive and supportive throughout the event.” With time ticking, Marcus Carrion, 725 AMS technical advisor, assembled a team of maintainers based on areas of special expertise to remove the aircraft from the runway. “We had one guy who is really good at using aircraft jacks, and one who is good at towing,” said Carrion. “We assembled the best of the best.” That team included Master Sgt. Michael Bartlett, a 725 AMS produc-

tion superintendent, who reviewed the technical manuals and suggested they use a process called kneeling. Kneeling uses hydraulics and the aircraft’s weight to raise or lower the body, tail or in this case, the nose of the C-5. Using this method instead of aircraft jacks or airbags saved up to twelve hours from the usual expected recovery time that day. “One of the most important things to do during a situation like this is be very decisive because if not, you burn up a lot of time, and that’s one thing we didn’t have,” said Carrion. “The success of this whole recovery was because of that kneeling procedure and our team members who carried it out flawlessly.” While time was of the essence, safety was a top concern for the team. “This team did a great job of making safety a top priority and for making the recovery happen in a short time,” said Newgard. “They put Rota on the map for having some topnotch maintainers.” While some focused on removing the C-5 from the runway, others focused on continuing the daily mission. The squadron relies on experience and training to expeditiously

transport mission-essential equipment and personnel to combatant commanders worldwide. Because of the teamwork, the safety focus, and the dedication to excellence displayed by the mobility Airmen, the airfield returned to a mission capable status in just 12 hours. “They had the right maintainers to go out and take care of that jet,” said Hook, the group commander. “They were able to get it safe, secure, and in a configuration where they could lower the gear and tow it off of the runway in an incredibly short amount of time.” Hook said the team demonstrated the passion enroute Airmen have to work safely and quickly, while minimizing downtime on airfields and enabling AMC aircraft to rapidly deliver cargo and personnel to combatant commanders worldwide. “I am an AMC Airman and I’m extremely proud of what the men and women here in the fixed enroute do,” said Hook. “The Air Mobility system continues to move along and through our locations to benefit the joint warfighter downrange and it’s because of our Mobility Airmen.”

you are, we have something to offer to help you,” said Staff Sgt. Daniel Austin, 86 AMS bioenvironmental technician and Running Improvement Program running coach. According to Bolling, they see an average of a 1 1/2-minute improvement for the 1.5-mile run times, but the program isn’t designed specifically for that. “We’ll get up to about three or 3.5 miles toward the end of the program,” Bolling said. “It will help to improve 1.5-mile run times, but if people wanted to do a 5K or something like that, the program would also prepare them for that.” The workouts incorporate strength training that targets the same muscle groups needed for sit-ups and pushups. “I don’t want to leave that out,” Bolling said. “I think the majority of the people we get are people who either have trouble with or have failed the (physical training) test. I don’t want someone to focus too much on just running and then fail another component of the PT test, but also strength training is a very important component of overall fitness. Even runners have to do strength training to improve overall performance.” Though many people may see big changes in their fitness levels, and PT test scores, Austin doesn’t believe that’s the biggest change that comes from participating in the program. “(The biggest change I’ve seen is) the positive difference in the member’s confidence level from when they

start the program to when they finish,” Austin said. “(My favorite part of being a coach) hands down is helping people and seeing the moment when the member comes back to tell us they beat their goal but knows they could do better.” The program also allows great runners and even former participants to

become coaches to continue to pass along similar support they received when improving their running. According to Bolling, the only real requirement for becoming a coach is a desire to help and support people in their goals to become better and healthier. “The support system this program

creates (is the biggest benefit),” Austin said. “You have the coaches, your running groups, and just new friends who are all working toward a similar goal and are there for you.” For more information about the Running Improvement Program, contact Capt. Charity Bolling at 478-5660.

Airmen succeeding successful Airmen Story and photo by Airman 1st Class D. Blake Browning 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs To some it is a collection of words, outlining what it means to be an Airman, the Airmen’s Creed has integrated its way in all Airmen in some part of their career. While to others, it holds true to their very core. An excerpt from the second stanza of the Airman’s creed reads, “I am faithful to a proud heritage, a tradition of honor, and a legacy of valor.” A statement one family stands by as they bring a family member of their own into an entirely new family. “My dad served in Vietnam for a couple of years,” said Tech. Sgt. Jamee Dean, 86th Communications Squadron communication focal point section chief. “My uncle served in the Navy, and my grandfather served in World War II.” While some families have a lineage of service members, Dean and her son Shandon stand out as they were fortunate enough to reenlist and enlist at the same time. “I want to stay in,” said Dean. “I want to help develop new Airmen that are coming in, like my son. I love the Air Force, I don’t want to retire. I want to mentor and be there for them like my mentors have been for me.” Though both Dean and her son have different motivators behind their commitment,

the dedication to service is a connection they both share. “Joining the military will help me set up my life,” Shandon said. “The first few years in the military your housing is paid for, your food is paid for, your clothing is paid for, and you’re there to develop yourself as a person.” Although the military lifestyle offers numerous benefits, there are drawbacks that come with it. Family members experience it first-hand. “The worst part of being a military child is pretty much deployments,” Shandon said. “There’s a lot of waiting, wondering what my mom is doing. Every time we talked, I would wait for the next conversation. Other than that, there aren’t that many downsides being a military family member. The best part is being part of a community wherever you go, any base that you go to, you are a part of that community now. It’s like being a part of a big family.” Shandon is slated to become a linguist and says he recognizes the sacrifices his mother has made and fully understands the responsibilities while following in her footsteps within the Air Force. “Plenty of people are heroic,” Shandon said. “Policemen, firefighters, they all put their lives on the line. But my mom has always been my hero. She’s never let me down, she’s always there when I need her. She is my hero.”

BMETs up to bat Story and photos by Airman 1st Class Savannah L. Waters 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs

The 86th Medical Support Squadron biomedical equipment technicians perform annual maintenance on next-generation portable therapeutic liquid oxygen units June 21 on Ramstein. Nextgeneration portable therapeutic liquid oxygen units are liquid oxygen systems that are used on aeromedical evacuation missions to provide breathable oxygen to patients. By using their own materials, BMETs have changed the entire maintenance process, effectively cutting the fourweek process down to just three days.

Senior Airman Cody Brown, 86th Medical Support Squadron biomedical maintenance technician, performs annual maintenance on next-generation portable therapeutic liquid oxygen units June 21 on Ramstein. BMETs at Ramstein ensure their medical facilities have equipment that is functional. They perform basic electronic and troubleshooting diagnostics on every kind of medical equipment imaginable.

Senior Airman Cody Brown, 86th Medical Support Squadron biomedical maintenance technician, operates a liquid oxygen generator June 21 on Ramstein. Ramstein is the first base to use a process that uses their own liquid oxygen generator and nitrogen to make portable breathable oxygen for patients, effectively cutting a four-week process to just three days.

An Airman sits on the examination table, glancing at the medical posters and anatomical models as they wait under the harsh fluorescent lights for their doctor. After ripping the sheet underneath them to shreds, a nurse walks in and asks them a few questions about their medical history. Starting the process of figuring out how to return Airmen to the mission as efficiently and quickly as possible, the nurse says ‘say ahh.’ “That thermometer…is just the start of it,” said Tech. Sgt. Jonathan Cagle, 86th Medical Support Squadron noncommissioned officer in charge of war reserve materials maintenance. “As simple as a thermometer or a blood pressure unit may seem, it’s imperative that they are there and working correctly. If not, medical staff and technicians are basing their diagnosis off of wrong information, which could potentially harm a patient.” Biomedical equipment technicians at Ramstein ensure their medical facilities have equipment that is functional. They perform basic electronic and troubleshooting diagnostics on every kind of medical equipment imaginable. In the 86 MDSS, BMETs are stretched across several proficiencies in one work center: War Reserve Materials, Medical Equipment Repair Center, Patient Movement Items, and the clinics. The WRM team works hand-inhand with the medical logistics flight, which are responsible for the maintenance and inventory of medical equipment and supplies, as well as preparing for exercises, at the Air Force’s third largest and most active WRM to maintain 128 unit-type code assemblages worth more than $29 million. The Ramstein BMETs team supported recent exercises such as Juniper Falcon, a U.S. Air Forces in Europe-led exercise in Israel; Flaming Sword, a Lithuanian-led NATO special operations forces exercise; and Saber Strike, a U.S. Army Europe-led exercise in Lithuania. “Whether it’s for a deployment or exercise, we take the inspection and calibration of every piece of equipment item in those packages very seriously,” Cagle said. At Ramstein, BMETs have the opportunity to be a part of a unique mission named ‘BMETs without Borders,’ traveling as a MERC team to 14 different countries across Europe,

Africa, and Southwest Asia. The 86 MDSS calibrates and repairs medical equipment while offering training to other BMETs who might not have the expertise or test equipment required to work on more complicated items like X-Ray, ventilators, or anesthesia equipment. “We are the only MERC in USAFE, traveling to make sure that other BMETs have the tools and information they need to get the job done,” said Master Sgt. Travis K. Edwards, 86 MDSS clinical engineering superintendent. In addition to taking care of almost 1,700 medical equipment items for the 86th Medical Group clinics, which includes the largest outpatient clinic in the Air Force and the largest dental clinic in Europe, the innovative BMETs at Ramstein have also found a way to use their own liquid oxygen generator and nitrogen. War Reserve Material BMETs are producing next-generation portable therapeutic liquid oxygen units used on aeromedical evacuation missions to provide breathable oxygen to patients. Servicing these units requires coordination with several flight line entities to deal with both the liquid oxygen and the nitrogen portions of the process, which could take up to four weeks for the completion of just one unit. By using their own materials, the entire maintenance process changed, effectively cutting the four-week process down to just three days. “We are always looking for better, faster, and more efficient ways of doing things,” Edwards said. “Ramstein is the first base to be using this process and we are working to spread the procedure Air Force wide.” Ramstein’s BMETs are very aware of the responsibility they hold for the safety and health of their customers, the patient movement items hub managing 1,300 life safety items worth more than $11.6 million for aeromedical evacuation missions throughout Africa, Southwest Asia, and Europe. “Personally, my wife has needed multiple surgeries since I’ve been in the military,” Cagle said. “Seeing that same equipment that I myself worked on and calibrated taking care of her really brings it into perspective for me.” With such important work to be done, BMETs have their work cut out for them. “We’ve had a saying about quality over quantity,” Cagle said. “We don’t want to shortfall anything, but we have to make sure that the quality is there and it has to be done right, there’s no exception to that. If it’s not right, it ain’t done.”

Ingredients (for 4 people)

300 grams large shrimp without tails and veins 2 cups carrots, finely grated 1 cup snow peas, cut into strips 1-2 cloves garlic, minced 4 cups fish or vegetable broth Salt Ground white pepper 1 ½ cups raw rice 4 medium eggs 4-6 tablespoons lemon juice ¼ teaspoon sugar

Heat broth. Add garlic. Season with salt and pepper and add rice. Let it simmer on medium heat for 8 min-

Whisk the mixture until it starts to boil, then add salt, ground white pepper and nutmeg, increase the heat to medium. After all ingredients are whisked into a smooth creamy mixture, reduce heat back to low and simmer for 45 minutes to one hour. To assure your mixture is nice and smooth, strain into another pot. Bring it back to simmer. Add liquid cream. Taste. Add more salt and ground white pepper to match your taste. When ready to serve, add a bit of whipped cream to each bowl.

utes, then add carrots and bring to boil on medium. Let it simmer for 8 more minutes. Add snow peas and shrimp. Let it simmer for 2 more minutes. Remove soup from the stove. Scramble eggs. Add a bit of lemon juice to eggs. Add ½ cup of the warm soup mix to the egg mixture, stirring slowly but constantly. Pour scrambled egg mixture into soup that has been removed from heat. Stir gently. No more cooking of the soup. Season with salt, pepper, a bit of sugar and the remaining lemon juice. Enjoy both soups with some nice crusty bread bought from your local bakery.

‘Oil doctors’ keep engines running

Detlef Nuss, a physical science technician at the Army Oil Analysis Program lab in Kaiserslautern, examines some recently arrived oil samples June 23 at the AOAP lab on Kleber Kaserne.

Story and photos by Lt. Col. Jefferson Wolfe 7th Mission Support Command Public Affairs The Army Oil Analysis Program lab on Kleber Kaserne works every day to increase readiness and lower maintenance costs while also helping to protect the environment. AOAP is part of a Department of Defense-wide effort to predict equipment component failures and lubricant conditions by testing oil samples from vehicles, generators, aircraft and other kinds of equipment. The program’s goal is to improve combat readiness and reduce equipment fail-

ures while conserving resources by reducing the frequency of unnecessary oil changes. “Right now, we do about 1,000 samples a month,” said Heidi Bodeit, the Kaiserslautern AOAP lab’s director. Units enrolled in the program submit oil samples which are tested on a regular basis. By examining the contents of the oil, the laboratory personnel can determine if the oil is going bad or the equipment needs maintenance. “We are the oil doctors,” said Dr. Davoud Tehranfar, who holds a doctorate in chemistry. The lab measures how healthy the

oil is, he said. He compared it to doing laboratory tests on a person’s blood sample. Testing starts with an examination of the oil’s viscosity, or thickness. This helps tell if the oil is still “healthy” for use or needs to be replaced. Mileage or time may indicate a vehicle needs an oil change, but the oil may still be working as it should, Bodeit said. Getting rid of oil unnecessarily costs the American taxpayer money, she said. Other tests look for particulates like water, metals or fuel, which may get into the oil if the equipment is not running properly.

When looking for particulates, there are three tests for ground vehicles and 4-6 tests for aircraft, Tehranfar said. Detlef Nuss, a physical science technician who performs many of the tests, has worked at the lab for 35 years. One of the tests he performs uses an atomic emission spectrometer to determine what elements are in the oil. By examining the degree to which 15 elements are present in the oil, the lab can determine what may be ahead for the vehicle. For example, too much iron may indicate a problem in the engine case, Tehranfar said. “The oil is talking and we have to find the language,” he said. They also track oil samples from a vehicle, keeping a record of each successive sample, he said. If subsequent tests showed a vehicle’s engine condition getting worse, they can notify the unit to take a look at what may be wrong. The Kaiserslautern AOAP lab serves all the units in Europe and Africa, Bodeit said. “We have a very close and good relationship with the EUCOM deputy G-4,” she said. The lab also supports the equipment in the Army Prepositioned Stocks around Europe and the equipment in the Baltic states for the new rotational forces, she added. The 39th Transportation Battalion has a fleet of 60 vehicles that are sampled every month, said Chief Warrant Officer 2 Cherenfant Pierrelouis, the maintenance supervisor. The program saves the unit about $28,000 a quarter in oil purchases alone, he said. There are additional savings in parts, such as oil filters, and

July 14, 2017 man hours not used unnecessarily, Pierrelouis said. It takes one mechanic about 45 minutes to change oil and dispose of it, however one mechanic can draw samples of both engine and transmission oils in five to ten minutes, he added. After pulling the samples from equipment, units can send the bottles through the mail or by delivery service to the lab. The lab has 72 hours to analyze samples from ground equipment and send results back, Bodeit said. For aviation samples, the response must be within 24 hours. If there is nothing wrong with the oil, the response will be an email. If something is wrong, the lab workers will call the unit directly, she added.

Kaiserslautern American In this way, AOAP increases unit readiness by letting commanders know which vehicles have problems before they show up during a mission, Bodeit said. The Kaiserslautern lab only takes oil from vehicles that are required to be enrolled in AOAP, but Bodeit hopes to expand the program, encouraging commanders to voluntarily enroll. Another benefit of AOAP is the reduction in waste oil and other items, like oil filters, that accumulate after unneeded oil changes. “AOAP is a good program, not only for the readiness and the safety, but also for the environment,” Bodeit said. To serve customers better, the lab undergoes a yearly ISO 9000 certification by the International

Organization for Standardization. In fact, the AOAP lab in Kaiserslautern is the only Army Oil Lab in the world certified as ISO 9000 compliant. ISO provides a set of international standards on quality management and quality assurance developed to help companies maintain an efficient quality system. The certification demonstrates the customer gets a good quality product or service, Bodeit said. The lab, which employs five people, is getting ready to update its certification this year under the latest standard, ISO 9001:2015. It takes a lot of work and documentation to become ISO 9001 compliant, said Akwasi Opoku Edusei, who has been working on the certification. “It’s not easy to get,” he said.

21 TSC, 7 MSC set stage for Saber Guardian 17 by Capt. Doug Magill 7th Mission Support Command NOVO SELO, Bulgaria — The 7th Mission Support Command and elements from the 21st Theater Sustainment Command arrived at Novo Selo Training Area in support of a multinational exercise in Eastern Europe July 1. The exercise — Saber Guardian 17 — is the 2017 edition of an annual exercise held in the Black Sea Region as part of the U.S. European Command Joint Exercise Program. Saber Guardian aims to assure U.S. allies and partners of the enduring U.S. commitment to the collective defense and prosperity of the region and to reinforce deterrence measures agreed to by NATO allies, according to U.S. Army Europe. “Saber Guardian is a series of exercises in the Black Sea area,” said Brig. Gen. Steven Ainsworth, 7 MSC commanding general and 21 TSC deputy commanding general. “What we do is practice multinational operations. This is to increase our ability to communicate with each other and also increase our interoperability.” The 7 MSC and the 21 TSC – both headquartered in Kaiserslautern – are conducting a command post exercise as part of the overall exercise of Saber Guardian. The multinational exercise is conducted by 25,000 military personnel from 22 allied nations; the U.S. accounts for 14,000. “This mission command is forward so that we can be at the point of deconflicting any friction that occurs and insuring that we provide the very best support to the 14,000 Soldiers that are in the three-country area,” Ainsworth said. “That’s Hungary,

Timothy Sumovich and Staff Sgt. Mark Medina. The 7 MSC recently set up the command post in support of Saber Guardian 17.

Romania and Bulgaria.” The majority of the 21 TSC’s Soldiers in the forward command post come from the command’s Special Troops Battalion. “The 21st Special Troops Battalion has a unique mission here in Novo Selo Training Area, Bulgaria, that will have a lasting training impact on the organization for several months to come,” said 21 STB commander Jason A. Berdou. “We’ve been able to improve the readiness of total Army entities by integrating the 21 TSC and the 7 MSC by planning and paving the way for the 103 ESC to deploy and execute the redeployment operations of U.S. Saber Guardian 17 forces.” Other 21 TSC downtrace units,

including the 16th Sustainment Brigade, the 30th Medical Brigade, and the 18th Military Police Brigade, are taking part as well. The 7 MSC’s 361st Civil Affairs Battalion also is taking part in Saber Guardian 17. The practice of reserve and active components working together on exercises such as Saber Guardian improve the ability of both commands to do so during war time. “Our ability to work together as a team helps us become more familiar with one another so that in a time of crisis we are better prepared to execute our war time functions,” Berdou said. Saber Guardian is also a multicomponent exercise, including assets from the National Guard as well as

the Army Reserve and Active Army. “We provide mission command across the spectrum,” Ainsworth said. “The reason it’s important that we do this (between active and reserve components) is the 7 MSC is an Army Reserve unit and we can bring and flow in any additional resources that we need. In addition to that, the 21 TSC has the ability to reach back to the main element. And we can provide good analysis and future planning. Also, the Theater Sustainment Command has the reach-back capability all the way back to (the United States) and can help us in insuring that we can strategically – all the way down to the tactical level – provide the right sustainment level.”

KMC unveils memorial to two Airmen

Photo by Staff Sgt. Timothy Moore

Members of the French and Royal air forces assist family members of Squadron Leader Roger Bushell, Royal Air Force; and Sous-Lieutenant Bernard Scheidhauer, Free French Air Force, unveil the memorial dedicated to the two men outside the West Gate of Ramstein July 1. The two airmen were the masterminds behind the “Great Escape” that took place March 24, 1944. During the escape, 76 Allied airmen escaped from the prisoner of war camp Stalag Luft III at Żagań, Poland. Although, they only made it as far as Saarbruecken, Germany, where they were arrested on March 26 and interrogated. On March 29, under the pretext of being returned to their prison camp, Bushell and Scheidhauer were driven to a bridge near Ramstein and killed. Throughout the following days, 48 of their fellow escapees were executed. The commemorative stone was made possible through the support and efforts of the German, U.S., British, and French communities.

Castle Jazz takes place July 21, 22 in Landstuhl by Willi Ningelgen Unnerhaus Culture Club The European “Burg Jazz” Music Festival Landstuhl will again fascinate with high quality world musicians performing big band jazz, rock, blues, Dixieland and pop music July 21 and 22. The Unnerhaus Culture Club will present its 20th anniversary jazz festival inside the atmospheric courtyard of Nanstein Castle. The club expects visitors from the KMC, Germany and Europe to find their way to Nanstein Castle. The festival will kickoff at 7 p.m. July 21. The first top act will be friends from France, the New Orleans Preachers presenting classic New Orleans and Dixieland jazz and walking in their famous New Orleans Marching Parade. They will be followed by the second top act of the evening, The Swingin’ Fireballs. This small big band will play different jazz, Latin and boogie sets. They successfully tour through Europe since 1999 and established a big fan community. Billy May, the music director of Frank Sinatra listened to them during their European tour already in 2003 and said, “You were able to get a rich, full ensemble sound out of your group, it sounds great, keep on grooving.” The first festival day will come to a close around midnight with The New Orleans Preachers jamming in the Castle Battery Tower. On July 22, Castle Jazz will start at 7 p.m. The first top act will be the local Unnerhaus Jazzband, one of the most famous traditional

jazz bands in Germany. They are not only the keepers of the jazz tradition in this region, they succeed in reflecting nearly 100 years of classic jazz history with focus on Dixieland and New Orleans Jazz. Their repertoire includes the masterpieces of “black” jazz from the 1920s to the 1950s, featuring Count Basie, Louis Armstrong and Duke Ellington, including their own, modern compositions with local slang and fun songs. They will be followed by the second top act of Saturday evening, the group Les Haricots, one the most famous jazz ensembles from France, that is combining jazz, comedy and acrobatics, since the 1940s. Their music show is an adventure for ears and eyes and they celebrated their talent as starting band for the Louis Armstrong Orchestra, the Beatles and the Rolling Stones. The second day will come to a close with an aftershow party presented by Smitty, Corinna and Friends in the Castle Battery Tower around midnight playing a variety of blues, rock and soul music. Tickets will be available

at the entrance to the Nanstein Castle in Landstuhl. However, cheaper advance tickets will be available at the bookstore Boehm at the Landstuhl train station, at 06371-2742 or through www.unnerhaus-kulturclub. de/burgjazz. The Unnerhaus Culture Club is a non-profit organization and proceeds are only used for cultural events. Car parking is in easy walking distance to the castle. All Eyez on Me (R)

“All Eyez on Me” tells the true and untold story of prolific rapper, actor, poet and activist Tupac Shakur. The film follows Shakur from his early days in New York City to his evolution into being one of the world’s most recognized and influential voices before his untimely death at the age of 25. Against all odds, Shakur’s raw talent, powerful lyrics and revolutionary mind-set propelled him into becoming a cultural icon whose legacy continues to grow long after his passing. Rated R for language and drug use throughout, violence, some nudity and sexuality. Starring: Demetrius Shipp Jr., Danai Gurira, Kat Graham, Dominic L. Santana
