Warm summer weather makes the travel bug bite a little harder and fuel the wanderlust in us all. Unfortunately, family and personal responsibilities can prevent people from being able to hop on a plane and get away. One of the many benefits of life in the Kaiserslautern Military Community is being surrounded by some of the most beautiful travel destinations in the world. Culture is only a car ride away. Local travel photographer and perpetual wanderer, Elizabeth Jones, shared a few of her favorite day trip locations in Germany and France, as well as what makes them so special.

Located along the pristine banks of the Moselle River is Germany’s oldest city. It was once the capital of the Roman Empire and still boasts a number of Roman structures. Jones loves it for its Roman ruins and beautiful scenery. “Since it was founded by the Romans, you can find neat structures throughout the city that resemble Italian architecture. One of the most popular tourist spots in Trier is the Porta Nigra, which is a large Roman city gate that you can climb to the top of to see amazing views of the city.” Trier’s Palace Garden is another favorite spot. “Take a slow walk admiring the beautiful flowers, sit on a bench soaking in the atmosphere around you, or enjoy lunch at a nearby restaurant. Regardless of how you spend your day in Trier, you won’t be disappointed.”

Colmar
Moving from Germany to France, Jones recommends a stop in Colmar. Located along the Alsatian Wine Route in the Alsace region of France, Colmar has many attractive qualities. “Colmar’s atmosphere resembles a country town, giving it a lingering and enchanting presence. It has been preserved from the ravages of time, giving any visitor a sense of appreciation. You’ll want to stop at “Little Venice” to embrace the canals winding through the eight centuries of French and German architecture.” Jones recommends souvenir shopping in Colmar as well. “Colmar will surprise you with the amount of small boutiques, local shops, and quality products. You will easily be able to take a little part of Colmar home with you!”
Page 3 Rothenburg ob der Tauber is a quaint, charming German village that Jones says everyone should see at least once. “It is located along the Romantic Road in Bavaria. Exploring Rothenburg will make you feel as if you traveled back to medieval times. For the best views of the city, walk around the gated city walls.” Along with taking in the great views, Jones recommends dining in the city. “Don’t be surprised if you end up stuffing your face with Schneeballs, which are delicious pastries that resemble snowballs. Choose between chocolate, strawberry, vanilla, cinnamon or powdered sugar. Or you could just try them all!” She also recommends visiting stores and museums throughout the city. “Take a tour of the Medieval Crime and Punishment Museum, shop inside of the famous, Christmas themed Kaethe Wohlfahrt store. Rothenburg also has some of the best Christmas markets in Germany. But whatever time of year it is, this city is a must see!”

The last day trip that Jones recommends is Strasbourg, France. Strasbourg is located near the French and German border, making it ideal for a short trip from the Kaiserslautern area. “It is easy to be charmed by the mixture of French and German culture in Strasbourg. It looks like it belongs in a classic fairytale storybook. The Rhine River winds through the city and is sprinkled with bridges to cross the river. Strasbourg is quaint and picturesque, particularly in the most popular quarter, known as Petite France. Once you leave this French town, you will already be planning your next visit.” Long voyages are not necessary to enjoy Europe. A short road trip is all you need to take in amazing views and eat delicious foods. Take Jones’ advice and hit the road.

INDEPENDENCE Rice Krispie Stars Ingredients: 7 tbsp. Butter 6 cups mini marshmallows 6 cups Rice Krispie cereal Pinch of vanilla Food coloring
Instructions: • Melt butter and marshmallows on low heat, add a few drops of red and/or blue food coloring. • Remove the pot from the heat and add cereal. • Mix evenly. • Coat your hands with a bit of butter and either spread on a buttered baking tray and use a cookie cutter to get stars or form them with your hands. Optional: Leave the stars colorless, coat with melted white chocolate and add colored sprinkles. You can get creative here too and try to paint a flag with the sprinkles. Fruit Pizza Brownie This heavenly combination of gooey brownie, fresh cream cheese and fruit is everything you need on a summer afternoon. Again, you can get creative with your choice of fruit and adjust it to your personal preferences. Ingredients: Base: 2 cups sugar 1 cup butter 4 eggs 1/2 cup cocoa powder 1 1/4 cups flour 1/2 tsp. baking powder Pinch of salt
Optional: 1/3 cup of chopped nuts, e.g. walnuts Topping: 2 cups whipped cream 8 oz. cream cheese 1.5 tbsp. sugar 1 tsp. vanilla extract 1/2 tsp. lemon zest Berries or fruit of your choice
Instructions: • Melt the butter and let cool while you mix the dry ingredients with the eggs. • Add butter, mix thoroughly. • Bake at 350°F for 25 minutes. • Let the brownies cool off for at least 2 hours. • Whip the heavy cream and cream cheese separately, then fold together. • Add sugar, vanilla and lemon zest. • Garnish with fruit and some mint leaves.
Star Spangled Fruit Skewers A super simple but equally spectacular staple on your buffet table: Star spangled fruit skewers. You can have your pick of red, white and blue fruit like blackberries, dried plums, blueberries; cherries, watermelon, strawberries, raspberries; bananas, pears, apples or spice things up with candy, marshmallows or sponge cake squares. Make sure they are long enough for multiple lines to perfect your artistic masterpiece and don’t forget to use wooden skewers instead of plastic ones.

Jello Trifle This majestic Jello Trifle can be prepared in individual sizes, or a trifle bowl. Ingredients: 1 packet blue gelatin 1 packet red gelatin 1 packet unflavored gelatin Blueberries Raspberries 1 cup heavy cream 2 cups sour cream 5 tbsp. sugar
Instructions: • Prepare the blue gelatin according to its packaging and add blueberries. • Pour into bowl while still hot. • Let it sit and cool down before adding the next layer. • Sprinkle unflavored gelatin over 1/2 cup of water in a small pot, let sit for one minute. • Add cream and sugar. • Put it on low heat and stir frequently until the gelatin is dissolved. • Add sour cream. • Pour over blue layer and let sit until cooled completely. • Prepare red gelatin according to its packaging and add raspberries. • Pour into bowl while still hot. Optional: Garnish with whipped cream and more berries.

Cherry Stuffed Oreo Cake Pops So much is happening in the title already but these are actually simple and quick to make, great for keeping children busy and taste fabulous. Ingredients: 1 package of regular Oreos 8 oz. cream cheese 7 oz. white chocolate 1 tsp. coconut oil 24 cocktail cherries
Instructions: • Crush the cookies with a rolling pin or blend in a food processor. • Add the cream cheese and mix thoroughly. • Take a tablespoon of dough, shape a flat circle with your hands, put a cherry in the middle, form balls. • Let cool in the fridge for at least 20 minutes while you slowly melt the chocolate and coconut oil on low heat. • Dip the cake pops in chocolate and add sprinkles and decoration of your choice Optional: Add cake pop sticks before coating them

Spa is the original spa. The word that many of us associate with relaxation — mineral baths, massages, facials, steam treatments and just plain old treating ourselves — comes from just up the road in Belgium. But Spa is so much more than just a bastion of relaxation. Here are four reasons to give it a try! 1. Race weekends You’ll rarely feel more Euro than when you’re visiting Spa on a race weekend. The Spa-Francorchamps racetrack is globally famous. Each year, the track hosts a Formula One race that attracts fans from around the world. But even if you know nothing about racing, the track is worth a visit. Tickets for non Formula One race days are cheap. Parking is easy. BOTANICAL OASIS IN A METROPOLIS by Sallee Miller contributing writer Palmengarten is a lovely botanical garden in the city of Frankfurt, a “tranquil oasis in the heart of the city.” In 2015 over 500,000 people visited the gardens. The entrance fee is less than 10 euro, for which you are given the opportunity to meander among plants and trees and flowers that you have never seen in your life! The signage is in German but you don’t have to read the signs to know you are in a special place. To keep it special and always amazing, occasionally exhibits will close temporarily but there are always new and more beautiful things to see. I met a lovely woman who walks in the garden every Sunday morning and she said that it looks different every single week. Different plants and flowers blooming, all in their own time. For the summer, in July and August, the dahlias will be blooming in their spectacular fashion. Also in the summer, the Blue Egyptian Water-Lilies will be on display. You will be rewarded
in the spring with hundreds of flowers and specifically in March you can see the flowering crocus. As a bit of history, the garden’s architect and private financier was Heinrich Siesmayer. The park was completed for public viewing in 1871. Buffalo Bill visited from America in 1890. In 1931 the City of Frankfurt took over the park and then after WWII the American occupation authorities took control of the garden, returning it to the city in the 1960s. It was then that the parts of the park that were destroyed in the war began to be renovated and reconstructed and this construction was complete in 1992. The 52 acres are continually being updated and renovated. There are play areas for the children and wide expanses of green lawn with sunbeds for relaxing or reading amongst the peaceful surroundings. There is a quaint little train that will carry you and your children through the garden. You can rent a small boat for floating and rowing to your heart’s content like you are in another time and place, and not in the middle

of a bustling city right outside the gates. You are free to bring your own picnic basket but should you decide to forego carrying all these things into the park, there are snacks available as well as a restaurant with delicious cakes and cappuccino. A cursory review of their guest book revealed visitors from South Africa, the United Kingdom, Israel, New York City, Iceland, Bahrain, Estonia and so many more countries. Many residents of Frankfurt make the Palmengarten a routine stop for relaxation at all times of the year. Check online for regular concerts and events happening at the Papageno Musiktheater am Palmengarten. There is a robust children’s program here on the weekends where the kids can enjoy shows. For the adults, the evening programs are varied, check their website for current showings. On the practical side of things, you will find very clean toilets and the different attractions are well marked throughout the garden for ease of finding the greenhouses and restaurants. ENJOYING COMMUNITY EVENTS WITH YOUR SENSITIVE CHILD by Lisa Helenius contributing writer

Summer is here and it is time for festivals, fairs and fireworks displays! That sounds like a blast to most folks, but when you have a sensitive child the fun can be touch and go. If your child has a sensory processing disorder, an autism spectrum disorder or simply has a sensitive spirit, you are very aware of his or her unique needs and triggers.
Here are the top three scenarios that you may encounter and some helpful solutions to keep the peace of mind for your little one. Bonus – any of the solutions can be applied to any of the challenges. Mix and match as you like!

The Build Up CHALLENGE: Your child is anxious about crowds. They express distress at the thought of going to an amusement park or county fair because it is so unpredictable. “I’m scared” and “I don’t want to go” are common statements.
SOLUTION: Write a social story with your child. This means walking through the event in kid friendly language. Practicing the story each day can help make the activity more predictable and predictability for sensitive children equals comfort. Here is an example of a simple social story. You can look at pictures online, have your older child draw pictures or take some pictures in advance with your phone for illustrations as you practice the script that corresponds with the picture. Do an internet search to see some more examples. I will have fun at the water park. I will ride in the car. Mom or dad will buy a ticket. We have to wait in lines, but we will get our turn. Other adults and kids will be having fun, too. I will play in the water. I will follow the rules. When it is time to go home, I will change my clothes. We will go back to the car and drive home!
The Boom CHALLENGE: Your child is scared of loud sounds. Sirens send him into a panic. Fireworks – forget about it! It’s a “fightflight-freeze” situation when the environment is noisy and he is truly freaking out! SOLUTION: Try noise cancelling headphones. They are sold at the hardware store in kids’ sizes or you can find them online. If this isn’t realistic, try regular headphones that cover the whole ear and let your child play some calming music or white noise. You can even create your own white noise on the fly by cupping your own hands over your child’s ears and resting your chin on the top of their head while you hum. Believe it or not, chewing gum or drinking from a straw can also help muffle sounds to a degree. The Bubble CHALLENGE: Your child thrives with personal space and loses it if someone bumps into them or touches them unexpectedly. Waiting in line is especially difficult. He might even lash out or hit others if his personal bubble is threatened. SOLUTION: Create a “safe zone” or physical barrier for
your child. At a festival, this might be pulling them in a wagon. Bring a pop up tent if you are at a park. Let them wear a backpack when standing in line or push a younger sibling in the stroller — two natural physical “barriers.” At a music concert, a simple towel or blanket on the lawn can help your child define their own space. Bring an extra sheet or blanket for them to put over their head if they need to create an escape tent. Weather permitting, you may even consider having your child wear snugly fitting clothing, as this can provide calming pressure input. Many sport style shirts, swim shirts or leggings can do the trick. Hats help, too! There is a lot of summer fun to be had and your sensitive child can be a part of it with a little strategizing and planning. Happy Summer! The Vosges Mountains are a secret wonderland a short drive from Germany. Filled with food, wine, and the rustic charm of Alsace, the Vosges also will give you a fantastic summer mountain experience.

2. The Vosges peak drive and hike On a day with good weather, this is one of the best drives in France. Why? Well, the views are extraordinary, for one. But the drive, which starts in St. Marie-aux-Mines and zig-zags south to Cernay, also offers ample opportunities to stop and bag
It’s not just hiking and biking that make the Vosges an outdoor destination. There are also opportunities for canyoneering, which involves using nature’s work as your own playground. 3. Canyoneering in Seebach
is in Seebach, which is in the heart of the Vosges. Verticales Vosges, an outdoor company, has adventures for visitors as young as 8 years old. 4. The Alsace wine route Some of the greatest restaurants in the world can be found at the foot of the Vosges mountains. There are also excellent vineyards, charming villages, and all the shopping you can handle. Whether you’re staying in the mountains, or staying near them, make sure you make time for the Alsace wine route. Popular destinations include Riquewehr, Ribeauville and Kaysersberg. But adventure can be found in nearly any little village. Try a flea market in Ammerschwihr or a rampart walk in Bergheim. You’ll be charmed, at the very least.

1. The Ballons des Vosges Le Parc Natural Régional des Ballons des Vosges is breathtaking. It offers stunning views and a seemingly unending list of things to do. This is a place where you can hike, bike, fish, swim, ride horses, climb and do just about any other outside activity you can imagine. Camping is very much a possibility. There are a variety of campsites throughout the park. As a bonus, you’re in France. Which means that your camp meals can be filled with some of the best bread, cheese and wine (or grape juice for the kids) in the world.
5. Lac Blanc Lac Blanc bills itself as a ‘hiking paradise.’ This is the truth. It might as well add ‘mountain biking paradise,’ too. Most adventure seekers could spend at least a long weekend at Lac Blanc. All the better: The lake itself is lovely. Getting there To reach the most mountainous parts of the
Vosges, it generally takes 3.5 hours from Kaiserslautern. Reaching the Alsace wine route takes 2 to 2.5 hours. For U.S. government employees, including service members, remember to always follow command regulations, which may be different than host nation policies when it comes to travel.

European theme park offerings merged with nature-focused options make these places appealing to people from all walks of life. There are minimal but obvious safety concerns to observe at these places but they make for a great time on a weekend or during any stretch of the summer period. Be sure to use plenty of sunblock, even on overcast days and prepare for a change in weather. Fill your backpack with small snacks and water bottles, which are permitted at most parks.

Lines can be long but there are fast-pass options at some of the parks, so research a little before going. eide Park is the longest drive away, around five hours by car, but it is lauded publicly because of areas where the youngest of kids can have fun. The Panoramaturm is a tower for seeing the park from an overhead view and taking some good pics. urpfalz Park in Wachenheim has a highly-acclaimed wildlife area where you can witness wolves, deer, foxes, and other animals as they go about their way in a rustic environment. Falcon and hawk demonstrations take place daily to interest children and adults, as well, and there are hiking trails labeled with signage which teaches about the flora and fauna existent in the area. The park offers a summer luge run, which is huge fun for kids and adults, as well as a fantastic playground area where you can rest and watch the kids play to their heart’s content. It is located southeast of Kaiserslautern in Guenzburg and will take about three hours down Autobahn 6. rlebnispark Tripsdrill was Germany’s first park of this sort and boasts over 100 attractions depicting pirate life from days of old and constructed with the idea of designing a park that blends with nature. There are wildlife exhibits and interactive opportunities featuring about 40 species, falcon and hawk demonstrations, thrill rides including a highly-acclaimed roller coaster, unique lodging options, and lots of chances to eat a wide variety of foods. hantasialand calls itself Germany’s Best Themepark and it’s a claim that people will want to decide for themselves after visiting this widely-popular destination. A dinner theater experience is available and the park has tons of high-energy rides, tasty food booths and restaurants or food kiosks scattered throughout its boundaries. There are kids’ areas that allow larger families to put in quality time with kids doing face paintings, mini coasters, train rides, bumper cars, and water play. One of my favorite things about living in Germany is how dog-friendly everything is. I take my Italian Greyhound just about everywhere I go. And now that the weather’s warm, I’m planning even more outdoor adventures together. Here are a few things to keep in mind for your four-legged friend during the warmer months.
Heat Don’t let Fido dehydrate in the summer sun. Most restaurants are more than willing to provide you with a bowl and tap water. Simply ask, “Haben Sie Wasser für meinen Hund, bitte?” Bees As I write, my small dog it sitting on my lap with her mouth swollen like a chipmunk after eating a bee. I wish I could say she learned a lesson from all of this. Seeing as this is the second time we’ve been through this, I doubt it. One sting is generally not dangerous. But if you notice extreme swelling or trouble breathing, head to the vet as soon as possible. If your dog has had multiple stings or had a bee in its mouth, call your vet. Bee stings in the mouth can be life-threatening. It can cause swelling that can make it hard for the dog to breathe. Ticks We love to take hikes in the many wooded trails in the area. Ticks also love grassy trails, so it’s important to check your dog for them every day. You can buy inexpensive tick removal tools at the vet or online. Preparing for Holiday fireworks Independence day celebrations are around the corner and while most of us look forward to the holi-
day, your four-legged family member may have a hard time coping with the fireworks you love so much. Here are a few ideas to help relieve stress: • Make your home escape-proof: Some dogs run when they get scared. Close all doors and windows, close all curtains or rolladens and turn on the lights. Turning on the TV for some background sounds may also help disguise the noise. • Go for a walk: Tire your dog out before it gets dark. Go for a long walk, or even a swim, if you have a lake nearby. Make sure your dog is exhausted by the end of the evening to help settle them better. • Create a hiding space: If your dog likes to hide away, create a doggy den under a safe space with blankets, their bed and favorite cuddly toy. Once the fireworks start, be there for your dog to comfort them, don't leave them alone, if they are scared. If they hide away, let them, your pooch will come out again, once it feels safe. Biking from village to village in the areas surrounding the KMC and Baumholder can be challenging and a little frustrating during weekend and holiday traffic times when you have to share roadways with cars and trucks that zip around you to pass. Sometimes they get too close for comfort, especially when it is illegal to use sidewalks, and you are forced to concentrate on staying so close to the shoulder of the road without being able to bail off quickly onto grass, rocks and gravel if you are on a road bike. As a mountain biker who is able to ditch the pavement without damaging my tires and rims, I still do not enjoy biking along roadways for fear of that one distracted driver who could be texting, talking on the phone, eating, or fumbling around the vehicle for various other reasons. There are many options in the surrounding areas to enjoy your ride with peace of mind, lack of noise, amazing views, feel safe alone or with the family, and have rest stops along the way that offer food and drink, or picnic areas along the route. One of my favorite bike adventures in the area is the Draisinentour. The Draisine is a railroad bike trolly that was used years ago to take workers along the tracks to inspect and repair them. This is a great option if you don’t want to pack up your bikes, deal with flat tires, chain breaks, and especially traffic. The trollies are equipped with seats for 2 peddlers in the front, 2 passengers in the back so that you can switch off, and a backpack and cooler area at the rear of the trolley. If you are doing a family tour the recommended age for allowing the kids to peddle is 9 and
above due to leg length. Otherwise, they can enjoy the ride while you do the work. The routes are from Altenglan to Lauterecken (20 kilometer), or you can continue on to Staudernheim for a total of 40 kilometers. They are oneway routes that start and end at a train station with bus transportation at each point for your return trip. The routes start at different points on even and odd number days of the month. Even day route runs from Staudernheim – Lauterecken – Altenglan. Odd day route runs from Altenglan – Lauterecken – Staudernheim. Be sure contact the tourist information office in Kusel to make your reservation; email Touristinformation@kv-kus.de. You will receive your confirmation via email as well as the bus schedules and prices to return back to your start point. For those of you who prefer to take to the trails on your own or with your families, the following are a few great suggestions with no traffic, amazing views, as well as places to rest, picnic or stop at a local beer garden. These routes were also chosen because of their starting points being either in or near the villages that a lot of KMC and Baumholder off-base/post residence reside in. All routes are clearly marked with the name as well as colorful symbols that can be easily spotted as you drive through the villages. While riding keep in mind to check the signs along the way to stay on your route because many of them intersect with other routes at various points. Some of the routes have various surfaces such as dirt, gravel, and asphalt. They can also lead you into small villages for several minutes before connecting back into the wooded areas. • Fritz-Wunderlich-Weg goes from Altenglan to Freisen. Distance is 25.7 kilometers with a rating of

Summertime smarts by Katie F. Boltuch contributing writer Between the end of one school year and the start of the next, every student risks summer learning loss. According to the National Summer Learning Association students lose about two months of grade level equivalency in reading and mathematical computation skills over the summer. For many, this statistic is incredibly worrisome. But, rest at ease, there are two simple words that can help prevent the ‘summer slide:’ enrichment and involvement. Regardless of whether you have the ability to travel or can only stay on your local base or post, there are plenty of ways to stimulate your children to keep those brains pumping. Challenge yourself this summer by deciding to enrich your children so they can return to school without losing their academic footing.
Visit the library — Story time
If you have limited means of travel this summer, your best option is to take advantage of your surroundings. A family trip to the library is a wonderful source for many activities.Ramstein and Vogelweh libraries both offer story time for kids aged three to five at 10:30 a.m. Story time at Ramstein is every 2nd & 4th Wednesday and Vogelweh every 1st & 3rd Wednesday.
