Ramstein’s Year in Review

Photo by Senior Airman Timothy Moore

Welcome to Ramstein Air Base! Ramstein is home to the 86th Airlift Wing, 435th Air Ground Operations Wing, 521st Air Mobility Wing, 3rd Air Force, and U.S. Air Forces in Europe and Air Forces Africa. Throughout 2014, Team Ramstein’s missions have been varied and plentiful, whether taking care of Airmen and their families, building and strengthening partnerships with NATO, or providing exceptional combat airlift to the men and women of the U.S. Armed Forces. This Year in Review is just the tip of the iceberg that is Team Ramstein’s accomplishments. Enjoy, and make sure your story is represented next year!

Check passport validity before making travel plans Recently, a U.S. citizen assigned to Ramstein traveled to the U.K. (a non-Schengen country. See below for a list of Schengen countries) and was denied re-entry to Germany because his U.S. passport expired in less than three months. Take note of the following travel requirements. Entry into any of the European countries in the Schengen area for

short-term tourism, business trips or in transit to a non-Schengen destination requires a passport be valid for at least three months beyond the intended date of departure. For example, if a person will be staying in any of the Schengen countries for one month, their passport must be valid for four months from the date of arrival. The Schengen area comprises 26 European countries that have abolished passport and other types of border controls at their common borders, which means the area serves as a

single country for international travel purposes with a common visa policy. If a person is a qualified visitor for tourism or business with a valid U.S. passport, they can enter the Schengen area without a visa for a period of three months within each six-month period. Countries in the Schengen area are Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands,

Norway, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland. Although not a part of the Schengen area, the countries of Cyprus and Croatia also require a passport validity of three months beyond the planned date of departure. The European Union is not alone in implementing such a requirement. Since there are other countries that require passports to be valid for some period after the intended date of See PASSPORT, Page 2

Looking forward to a great 2015 COMMENTARY

by Brig. Gen. Patrick X. Mordente 86th Airlift Wing commander I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, I have the greatest job in the Air Force. I have a front row seat to witness amazing work accomplished daily by the men and women of Team Ramstein, and I’m looking forward to the accomplishments we will achieve together in 2015. With six groups, 27 squadrons and several staff functions working in harmony with our tenant units, the 86th Airlift Wing continued to prove why it’s a power projection platform enabling mission success for the Air Force, Department of Defense, and our NATO allies and partners throughout 2014. Looking back, 2014 was a busy and rewarding year for Team Ramstein. Regardless of the challenges we faced, our Airmen showed their dedication to the mission time after time. I want to take a moment and reflect on some key events in which we participated in 2014. In June and September, Ramstein Airmen were honored to participate in events celebrating the 70th anniversary of D-Day and Operation Market Garden. We were humbled as we remi-

nisced with World War II veterans who participated in the original battles. Ramstein also reconnected with a piece of history when an original Douglas C-47 Skytrain, called Whiskey 7, returned to mainland Europe after taking part in D-Day operations more than 70 years ago. We also connected with two veteran pilots with legacy ties to our own 37th Airlift Squadron. Throughout 2014, Team Ramstein continued to support Operation Atlantic Resolve demonstrating the United States’ commitment to our NATO allies and European partners throughout the region. As the Air Force’s projection platform in Europe, Ramstein hosted more than a dozen C-130J and C-17 aircraft from two continents and six states providing tactical airlift for Steadfast Javelin II. Ramstein also worked with our Polish, Romanian, Bulgarian, Lithuanian, Latvian and Estonian counterparts to support U.S. European Command as we continued to strengthen partnerships in Eastern Europe. To this day, we support this vital mission and look forward to future successes in 2015. Currently, we continue to support Ebola out-

break efforts in Western Africa. In October, Team Ramstein launched its first mission in support of Operation United Assistance, working with U.S. Africa Command and the U.S. Agency for International Development to deliver much needed support. While 2014 brought challenges and successes for the wing, I’m sure 2015 will bring transformation and new opportunities to set the standard for excellence. Regardless of what we face, we will tackle it together as a team. I’m confident Team Ramstein working together cohesively can prevail in any situation. I challenge every Airman — officer, enlisted, civilian — to remain faithful to our organization and our Air Force. Take pride in the uniform we wear and the duty we perform on behalf of our great Nation. Guided by our Core Values and inspired by those who paved the way for us all, we can make a lasting legacy for an enduring peace in Europe and around the world. Let us strengthen our resolve to put all of our efforts into having a great year. Thank you for what you do every day to keep America and its allies and partners safe.

return, the best bet is to check passport and visa requirements prior to making travel plans and make sure the passport is renewed well in advance of its expiration date (at least six months prior). Regular processing times to apply

for or renew a tourist passport are four to six weeks. Expedited services are not available in the overseas area unless there is an emergency. Contact a servicing passport office for more information on applying for a new or renewal passport. For more information on traveling in the Schengen area, visit the following websites:

• http://travel.state.gov/content/ passports/english/go/schengen-factsheet.html • http://ec.europa.eu/dgs/homeaffairs/what-we-do/policies/bordersand-visas/schengen. If the passport does not meet the Schengen requirements, boarding may be refused by the airline at the

point of origin or while transferring planes. Entry may also be denied upon arriving in the Schengen area. Some airlines require passports to be valid for six months before boarding. For this reason, it is recommended a passport have at least six months validity remaining when traveling through Europe.

ansWers: resolution | goal | dedication | perseverance | hope | drive | change | expectation

Capt. Spanky: Better you, better us Happy New Year, Team Ramstein! I hope you all had a safe and joyous holiday time with your loved ones, but now it’s time to buckle down and dig all your paws into 2015. At the beginning of many new years, many of us commit ourselves to be better than we were the previous year in some area or another of our lives. As individuals have done this, so too have organizations resolved to surpass the marks they achieved last year. Though these two things may seem unrelated, they are in fact one in the same. After all, aren’t organizations, at any level, made up of individuals? Therefore, I challenge you to set personal organization related goals as well. Start with something small, something you can maybe measure

from day to day. Then increase the scope of the goals to maybe include week-to-week measurements, while still keeping your daily goals in mind. As you, and hopefully others, meet and maybe exceed your goals, your organization will undoubtedly get better for it, even if only by a little. There may be times when we don’t necessarily reach our goals, but we must not become discouraged. So, I want us to also resolve ourselves to bounce back and remain in pursuit of objectives. At the end of the year, I hope we all can look back at where we were and be proud of what we have accomplished. Until next time, I wish you the best of luck with both your personal and organizational resolutions. Remember, they both depend on you!

What to do when you have (or think you have) the flu You wake up feeling really rotten. You know the flu season is in full swing, but you’re not really sure whether it’s the flu or just a nasty cold that got you down. Army medical officials offer the following guidance on what to do if you think you or your children have seasonal flu or flu-like symptoms. “There are several steps you can take to prevent you and your family from getting ill, such as getting your flu shot, washing your hands and covering your cough. If you do get ill, it is important to stay at home to decrease the risk of spreading the flu to others,” said Lt. Col. Kathi Hill, chief of preventive medicine at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center and Europe Regional Medical Center command consultant for Public Health Nursing. What are the symptoms to look for? If you wake up not feeling well, the following are common flu symptoms: fever (typically greater than 100 degrees Fahrenheit or 37.8 degrees Celsius). It is important to know that you can still have the flu without a fever, headache, extreme tiredness, dry cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, or body aches. Stomach symptoms, such as nausea, vomiting and diarrhea, may also occur but are more common in children than adults. Some people infected with the flu may have respiratory symptoms without a fever. Should I contact my health care provider or go the emergency room if I think I have the flu? If you get sick with flu symptoms and are at high risk of flu complications, or you are concerned about your illness, call your health care provider for advice. High risk individuals should seek care early if they develop flu symptoms. Their providers will determine whether flu testing or treatment is needed. The following individuals

are at higher risk for severe illness or complications from the flu: • Children younger than 2 years old • People 65 and older • Pregnant women • People who have cancer; blood disorders, including sickle cell disease; chronic lung disease, including asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD); diabetes, heart disease, kidney disorders or liver disorders; neurological disorders, including nervous system, brain or spinal cord disorders; neuromuscular disorders, including muscular dystrophy and multiple sclerosis; or weakened immune systems, including people with AIDS. Should I go to the emergency room? The emergency room should be used for people who are very sick. You should not go to the emergency room if you are only mildly ill. If you go to the emergency room and you are not sick with the flu, you may catch it from people who do have it. An emergency room visit should be made if you or your child experience chest pain, shortness of breath, wheezing, fever with a rash, unable to take in water, sudden dizziness, or confusion. If you are unsure, you should call your health care provider. Fortunately, most healthy people with mild flu symptoms do not need medical care or antiviral drugs. Over-thecounter cold and flu medications can help lessen symptoms, such as fever, cough and congestion. How should I treat myself or my child while sick at home? • Stay home for at least 24 hours after your fever has gone down (temperature is below 100 F or 37.8 C), except to get medical care or for other necessities. Your fever should be gone without the use of fever-reducing medicine, or when all your symptoms have been resolved.

• If you must leave your home or barracks for health care or food procurement, wear a surgical/face mask. Try to arrange for a family member, friend or neighbor to obtain food and other items for you. • Keep away from others as much as possible. This is very important to help reduce the spread of the virus. • Health care workers may return to work after a 24-hour fever-free period but cannot care for immune-compromised patients for seven days from symptom onset and until 24 hours without fever, whichever is longer. • All home, isolation and exclusion periods apply regardless of whether antiviral medications are taken. • Drink clear fluids (water, broth, sports drinks or electrolyte beverages for infants) to keep from being dehydrated, get plenty of rest, and follow good hand, respiratory and cough hygiene measures. • Do not share dishes and eating utensils. These can be washed in the dishwasher or with hot, soapy water. • Have everyone in the household wash hands often with soap and water, especially after coughing or sneezing. Alcohol-based hand cleaners are also effective. Restrict visitors to the home. • Cover your cough and wash your hands often, even when taking antiviral medications, to prevent spreading influenza to others. Avoid close contact (within six feet) with others, and do not go to school or work while ill. • Call your clinic if you (or your child) experience any side effects, such as nausea, vomiting, rash or unusual behavior. • If you or your child is prescribed antiviral medications, take all of it as directed. • Take over-the-counter medications for symptom relief as needed for fever, pain and cough. In the coming days and weeks, 10 local German communities in the vicinity of major U.S. military installations in Rheinland-Pfalz will start a household survey addressing U.S. residents. The questionnaire campaign is part of the state initiative “Welcome to RhinelandPalatinate — Our Neighbors from America, which has been launched by the Department of the Interior of the German State of RheinlandPfalz. The initiative aims at receiving an overview of fields of interest, local demands and the need for information on U.S. citizens living in local German towns and villages in order to develop customized local initiatives and services that foster a positive German-American everyday life. “Especially in a number of small German communities close to U.S. military installations, we are dealing with a U.S.-American share of inhabitants of 20 percent or more. Thus, enhancing a culture of local GermanAmerican openness can be of mutual benefit for both American families and the German community, said Minister of the Interior Roger Lewentz. WTB-E takes part in Battle of the Bulge commemorative march On Dec. 13, the USO arranged for 40 wounded, ill and injured Soldiers and cadre from the Warrior Transition Battalion-Europe to participate in the 70th anniversary commemorative Battle of the Bulge march in Bastogne, Belgium. In total, more than 1,500 people participated in the 12-kilometer hike that followed the path of the Battle of the Bulge through fields and forests of eastern Belgium. To add to the authentic feeling of the event, many re-enactors in period costumes and uniforms participated in the hike, and many foxholes and field hospitals were set up. Also, the heavy snow added to the somberness and solemnity of the day and served as a reminder of how the conditions were for the actual Soldiers, who held their ground against an overwhelming onslaught in austere conditions.

washing thoroughly first. • Wash linens (such as bed sheets and towels) by using household laundry soap and tumble dry on a hot setting. • Avoid “hugging” laundry prior to washing it to prevent contaminating yourself. • Wash your hands well after handling dirty laundry. • Designate one person as the ill person’s caregiver, if possible. Try to identify a person as the primary caretaker who is not at high risk of flu associated complications.

Feb. 11 and 12; Level Four, Feb. 13 to 16. Classes will be held at the Sembach Fitness Center, Bldg. 105, in the group fitness room. Register directly with YogaFit by today to ensure the workshop takes place. Early bird and regular prices can be found on the YogaFit website. Register for all three workshops and save $150 when you enter the code “WARRIOR14” during check-out. For more information and to register, email info@yogafit.com or call 888-786-3111.

• When holding small children who are sick, place their chin on your shoulder so that they will not cough in your face. • Monitor yourself and household members for flu symptoms, and contact your local health care clinic if you have questions. • Minimize close face-toface contact with the sick person. If close contact is unavoidable, consider wearing a face mask if available and tolerable. • Used face masks should be taken off and placed immediately in the trash; avoid reusing, if possible. Wash your hands immediately afterward. In Germany, beneficiaries can call the Nurse Advice Line 24 hours a day at 00800-47592330.

No one in my family has gotten the flu yet. Should I still receive the flu vaccine? Yes. Seasonal flu vaccinations are available at your local health clinic. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, even those who have already had the flu should receive the influenza vaccine. The vaccine covers three strains of flu, so being vaccinated protects from those strains. For more information, visit www.cdc.gov/flu. (Courtesy of Landstuhl Regional Medical Center Public Affairs)
