AF, Army exercise demonstrates airborne, ground combat by Staff Sgt. Kris Levasseur 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Air Force and Army combat specialists from the 2nd Air Support Operations Squadron, 2nd Stryker Cavalry Regiment and 2nd Battalion, 159th Aviation Regiment had a chance to demonstrate their ability to exercise effective command and control during a recent exercise designed to test their ability to assault a simulated enemy compound. The exercise, which took place at the Grafenwöhr Training Area, consisted of approximately 50 members training with and

against several ground and aerial platforms, including Army Strykers, UH-60 Blackhawks and AH-64 Apaches. “The training provided us a chance to work with our Army counterparts, which is not something we get to do every day,” said Senior Airman Bobby McDonald, 2nd ASOS joint terminal attack controller. “This is important for us, especially our younger JTACs, because our job supports Army combat units. We provide close air support, resupply drops, air assaults and several other tactical functions in order to protect friendly

forces and prevent unnecessary danger to their lives.” McDonald added that JTACs go through rigorous training prior to arriving at their first duty station. Technical training takes more than two years to complete and requires them to attend several schools around the U.S. “What we do is necessary, because we bring a critical capability to the fight,” McDonald said. “The skills we bring to the fight are very complex and sophisticated, and there is no See EXERCISE, Page 2

Drinking and driving: Poor decision can ruin your life COMMENTARY

by Capt. Luis Rosado-Medina 86th Vehicle Readiness Squadron vehicle management flight commander “Arrive alive. Don’t drink and drive.” “You booze, you cruise, you lose.” “Friends don’t let friends drive drunk.” These are just some of the slogans you may have heard of at some point in your military career. They are literary gimmicks trying to keep you safe and out of trouble. Unfortunately, it doesn’t seem to be enough for some people who believe they’re not that bad off and believe they won’t get caught. Ramstein alone had 38 Article 15s for DUIs processed in 2013. Air Force wide there were 430. These are Airmen who thought they could beat the system. Well, they didn’t, and these same Airmen put us all

room for error. Training like this is vital to maintaining our ability to do our job.” The young Airmen weren’t the only ones to benefit from the combined training. Tech. Sgt. Jason Basaldua, 2nd ASOS A flight NCOIC, said this was one of the first times JTACs operated in the air as well as the ground. “We had a chance to get our JTACs in a Blackhawk for this exercise, which is not something we normally do,” he said. “It offered our members a unique perspective, because we are usually on the ground. Being able to see the action from the pilot’s perspective was amazing and gave me a clearer picture of what happens from all angles.” Lt. Col. David Ferguson, 2nd ASOS commander, said future training like this will

at risk when they decided to get behind the wheel and drive. Here are some facts about drinking and driving from U.S. Army Europe’s Regulation 109-1/CNEC6FInstruction 11240.6W/USAFE Instruction 31-202: • Individuals under the age of 21 are not allowed to operate a motor vehicle with any alcohol in their system. Individuals over the age of 21 are not allowed to operate a motor vehicle with a blood alcohol test score of .05, however that falls to .03 if the individual is involved in an incident or traffic violation. • The system of measure used by German authorities is different than the U.S. The German police use milligrams per milliliters. U.S. authorities use grams per milliliters. The result is that the German test is more stringent. If you are apprehended and

possibly include other elements, enhancing the mission capability and understanding of the participants. “These types of exercises are a major win for joint combined arms training, and we are exploring the feasibility of including partner nation participation in future efforts,” he said. Basaldua added that this is the first of many training sessions planned for the 2nd ASOS, and they intend to continue incorporating different challenges to increase the difficulty in order to improve the experience of the JTACs. “This training was only the first step in a bigger plan,” Basaldua said. “If we are not out there doing the job, we are back here training so we are ready. With the training we are doing now, the members of the 2nd ASOS should be ready to handle anything.”

charged with a DUI, you could face a fine ranging from hundreds to thousands of euro, lose your USAEUR driving privileges for one year, and if this isn’t your first incident, you’ll lose your driving privileges for five years. Also, if you are in the applicable grade and year groups, you could damage your chances of remaining competitive for retention in light of current force management programs. More than likely, you’ll face higher auto insurance premiums, and if the circumstances warrant, you could also be facing jail time. More important than the sanction imposed by law, is the potential of the life-changing event that follows you and your family. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 10,228 people were killed from alcohol impaired driving in 2010, and 82 percent of the

fatal crashes are caused by drunken drivers. So, what can we do to help our wingmen? Supervisors need to take an active role to ensure their Airmen have a plan if they decide to drink. If an Airman decides to go drinking, they need to ensure they have a plan in place to get home safely. Plans can vary from having a designated driver, to taking public transportation, calling a taxi or getting in touch with their peer or supervisor. Additionally, if you host an event, do not allow your guests to leave unless they have a plan to get home safely. You need to remember that if you host an event and someone drives away, you could be held liable. We all have a responsibility to look out and care for each other. Let’s do all we can to make 2014 a great and responsible year.

TRICARE on vacation by Sara Pavich 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs

E

urope is the perfect playground for the winter sports enthusiast, and many service members are packing up their families and headed to the mountains for a holiday in the snow. However, accidents on the steep slopes of the Alps are common and injuries can occur. Spending a vacation in a foreign emergency room can be stressful enough, but service members must also take into account the process of paying for medical treatment. If emergency treatment becomes necessary while traveling, service members should be prepared with a plan. According to www.tricare.mil, emergency medical services should be contacted immediately in the event of a medical, maternity or psychiatric emergency. However, it is nec-

essary for travelers to be aware of the possibility that the clinic where they receive treatment may not accept TRICARE. In cases of emergency, military families should know their options according to their level of coverage. “For TRICARE Prime Overseas members, the first step to ensure emergency treatment will be properly covered is to call International SOS,” said Senior Master Sgt. Jessica Dunn, 86th Medical Support Squadron TRICARE operations and patient administration superintendent. “Some hospitals in Europe will not recognize TRICARE, so they will want patients to pay out of pocket. To avoid that, you want to call ISOS, so they can coordinate with the hospital to arrange to send payments so they will release you.” If payment must be made up front, TRICARE will reimburse members if they have a receipt of the transaction. “Retirees and their families travel-

They can still call ISOS for help and counseling, but ISOS will not be able to complete necessary paperwork for claims.” There is always a risk during international travel when it comes to medi-

After The Battle: The bandage mission Story and photo by Senior Airman Chris Willis 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Editor’s note: This is the second in a four-part series about the 455th Air Expeditionary Wing’s medical response capabilities and the various teams within the wing that play a role in the care and transportation of combat wounded troops throughout Afghanistan. BAGRAM AIRFIELD, Afghanistan — More than 70 years ago, the first flight nurse graduated from the flight nurse course on Bowman Field, Ky. These flight nurses trained to provide a higher level of care to patients while they traveled by aircraft to other medical facilities. Today, the flight nurses and technicians of the 455th Expeditionary Aeromedical Evacuation Squadron keep that level of care going in the skies above Afghanistan. The 455th EAES provides medical and nursing care in flight to ill or injured service members or Department of Defense civilians. They perform their mission on fixed wing aircraft, including the C-17 Globemaster III, C-130 Hercules and KC-135 Stratotanker, and can provide extensive critical care capability equal to the level of care that patients receive at the Craig Joint Theater Hospital here. “Our job is to move the sick and injured through the area of responsibility of Afghanistan,” said Col. Edward Farley, 455th EAES commander. “We obviously don’t want to be very busy, because that means that something bad has happened, and we have to move our service members or our coalition partners to a higher level of care.” Farley, deployed from Scott Air Force Base, Ill., leads 48 medical personnel with teams of four basic crews consisting of two flight nurses and three emergency medical technicians. All flight crew members received specialized altitude training to become universally qualified to move patients by aircraft. Tech. Sgt. Alejandro Rojas, 455th EAES medical

technician, said the hardest part about his job is the uncertainty of the missions, but his team trains for the unexpected. “Each of our teams preps and configures all of our equipment the same way,” he said. “That way no matter what aircraft or patients we get, we are ready.” He also said that even though his unit doesn’t always stay extremely busy, primarily during the winter seasons, the necessity to have them is unquestionable. “We are like life insurance,” Rojas said. “We are expensive, and we are not always busy, which is good, but you are really happy to have us when something goes wrong.”

Working as a cohesive unit, the members of the 455th EAES are a mix of Air Force active-duty, Guard and Reserve members from bases all over the globe. Rojas’ home station is Kadena Air Base, Japan, while other team members are from stateside bases like Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst, N.J. Farley said he believes his team works well together because of the awesome responsibility of their mission and just how worthwhile it can be. “The team encounters these young and brave men and women that have gotten injured while serving their country,” he said. “We get to take them by the hand and look them in the eyes to tell them just how proud of them we are.”

MyICP gives military spouses new career planning tool by Terri Moon Cronk American Forces Press Service WASHINGTON — Military spouses who need guidance on education and careers have a new online tool at their fingertips, a program analyst for the Spouse Education and Career Opportunities program, or SECO, said in an interview last week. “My Individual Career Plan” allows spouses to build a virtual career roadmap based on their specific goals and objectives, Lee McMahon said. MyICP launched Jan. 10 on Military OneSource’s MySECO website, the primary access point for the Defense Department’s

Spouse Education and Career Opportunities program, McMahon said. “SECO provides expert career and education guidance to military spouses worldwide,” she said, “supporting them in four career life cycle stages: career exploration; education, training and licensing; employment readiness; and career connections.” The MyICP tool is available for all active-duty Army, Navy, Air Force and Marine Corps spouses and to National Guard and Reserve spouses as well, McMahon said, noting that it’s also open to spouses for up to 180 days after their service member separates or retires from the military. Spouses must first register at https://myseco.militaryone-

source.mil. Surviving spouses of military members who died while on active duty also are eligible. To illustrate how MyICP works, McMahon used the example of a nursing student military spouse who has just moved to a new duty station and wants to see what opportunities exist in the new area. Licensing requirements are an issue for nurses, McMahon notes. So once logged on and after clicking on “manage my individual career plan,” the spouse would begin to build a MyICP by selecting “licensed” and “student.” Next, the spouse would go to the occupation page to find “nursing,” which would generate information from the Labor Department. The

spouse would then select topics from the “challenges and growth opportunities” category. This category

From the bottom of the bottle to the top of the tier Story and photo by Airman Larissa Greatwood 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs In a recent storytelling event, Chief Master Sgt. David Oddo, 603rd Air and Space Operations Center superintendent, was encouraged by the Airmen in his shop to share his story of trials, tribulations, love and family. Oddo was born into a dysfunctional family, which made his permanent challenges more difficult to manage. “I was born the youngest of three into a family of alcoholism and drug use,” Oddo said. “My brother was the golden child, my sister the princess and I was more of an inconvenience. I say that because I wasn’t actually the normal child. I had involuntary muscle spasms, couldn’t control my body, was hyperactive and (had obsessive-compulsive disorder). I’m talking OCD like CDO, where the letters are in order like they should be.” These involuntary afflictions made his life a struggle every day. “If I touched the door with my left hand, I had to touch it eight times then again with my right hand eight times,” Oddo said. “It really makes things slow going in and out of the house.” His family and many of his peers didn’t give him sympathy, because they didn’t know what he was going through. At the time, no one really understood his condition, not even doctors. “In 1970, Tourette syndrome, which is what I have, didn’t exist,” Oddo said. “Back then, the diagnosis was, ‘Well, your kid’s screwed.’” Though he was struggling to be understood, he wasn’t completely unhappy. He was very caring and compassionate toward others, even though they may not have been the same to him. Slowly but surely, that faded. “My parents divorced and my mom remarried,” Oddo said. “I thought maybe he’d be an upgrade, but no — the same status quo, another alcoholic. My stepfather loved us, but because he was an alcoholic, I came home to a dark house every day.” Oddo’s upbringing made him question what love and acceptance was. He was looking for love in all the wrong places, desperately trying to find answers and numb himself from the horrible things that were happening in his life at the time. “I tried to find love in other ways,” Oddo said. “I started drinking. My brother left for the Navy; he didn’t want to hear from me. My sister left for culinary school. She didn’t want to hear anything either. My mom owned a flower shop, which she drank away, then ended up in rehab. I was young, taking care of my alcoholic mother and closing down her business, while still trying to attend school and hold down a job. I was trying not to lose my mind.” Though Oddo said he felt he had everything under control at the moment, he knew he had to do something more with his life. “I joined the Air Force with two goals: don’t go to jail and make master (sergeant),” he said. “The first place they sent me was right up the road from my home town. It was a four-hours on, four-hours off, civilian clothes job. I bought the crappiest clothes I could find that still qualified as work clothes and drank the rest of my paycheck away.” With an alcohol problem came a complete atti-

tude shift. Oddo slowly changed from a compassionate, positive person to a pessimist. “At that point, I became the equivalent of Eeyore,” Oddo said. “People would say, ‘This is going to be great!’ I would say, ‘It probably won’t.’” Through his struggle to deal with his outlook on life, Oddo met his now ex-wife. “I met my test wife,” Oddo said. “Let’s face it, all exes are test spouses. In retrospect, I never should have met her, because our relationship was built on all of my insecurities and issues that I dealt with. We got married, had our daughter, then she left. (But) not with the baby, thank God.” Oddo refused to let his children grow up the way he did. He took care of his daughter for three years by himself. Then, he met who he calls “the most miraculous person in the world” — his current wife, Alex. “We have two kinds of families: one we’re born into and one you grow yourself with your friends, family and loved ones,” he said. “That’s what I did, and that’s what got me sober.” His wife saw so much in him that he could never see himself. She showed him what it truly means to be loved and accepted. She welcomed him and his daughter with open arms. Her continuous love and support is what he needed to persevere. He soon had answers for his condition. “At that point, I was diagnosed with Tourette’s,” Oddo said. “Up until that point, I hadn’t been diagnosed. With Tourette’s comes severe (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder). I am somewhere along the lines of a flashing mirror and a squirrel. I have a head twitch that happens at least 80 to 90 times a day.” His family was his anchor. They supported him in every aspect, from who he was to his career opportunities in the Air Force. When it came time to promote, he had obstacles to overcome. “Promotion rates are very slow,” Oddo said. “I went from a fast burner at 12 years to the village idiot who couldn’t get promoted to master sergeant at 16 years. When I tested for master sergeant, there was an issue with the test. I had to wait another year

to take it. Two days before I took the test the next year, my director of operations called to tell me I was deploying for 179 days.” After he put in his time, Oddo came back with yet another obstacle. “I came back and brought a fabulous party gift: moderate to severe (post-traumatic stress disorder),” Oddo said. “We had to overcome that, and then I finally got to take my promotion test. In about a year and a half I went from a technical sergeant to a senior master sergeant select.” With his low self-esteem, Oddo felt as though the promotion was out of his reach, he said. He never considered himself an overachiever. “The day before senior master sergeant results came out my wife said to me, ‘Don’t get upset if you don’t make senior.’ I said, ‘There’s no way,’” Oddo said. “Lo and behold, I got picked out the first time.” With his new achievement, Oddo had a sense of pride. Things were finally going well. “I got to Ramstein and was doing great,” he said. “In 2011, I got two annual awards and was selected for chief. August of this past year, I sewed on chief.” Being a chief master sergeant with a lot of personal experience getting through rough times, Oddo said he feels it is his responsibility to let his Airmen know that he is always there for consultation. “There is a big difference between an Airman with a problem and an Airman that is a problem,” Oddo said. “They are not the same thing. Our Airmen need us to listen. I have an open-door policy where my Airmen know, no matter what, I will be there and I will find them help.” Oddo is a true inspiration and shows that though life gets difficult at times, you have to keep fighting. “Whether I look at the physical aspect of having Tourette’s or at the trials and tribulations my family has gone through, I should not be here today,” Oddo said. “It’s important that I tell you my story, because, despite all odds, here I am. I’m no better or different than any one of you.”

time-management skills. The self-service wizard then produces a MyICP, McMahon said, which recommends activities to meet a person’s career and education goals based on the selections made. The Military Spouse Employment Partnership, a component of SECO, is composed of more than 200 companies and organizations that have committed to hiring military spouses, she added, so MyICP also includes the ability for users to see which of MSEP’s partners might have jobs in the user’s occupation,

and provides a link to check the company’s openings in the chosen field. McMahon encouraged all military spouses in search of such opportunities to try the MyICP tool. “We would love to hear their feedback,” she said, noting that users can submit their input on the MySECO website by clicking on “SECO Satisfaction” or the feedback button. Military spouses who have additional questions or need more information about using the MyICP tool can call Military OneSource at 1-800-342-9647 and speak to a SECO career counselor.

Ramstein Airmen STEP up by Airman 1st Class Jordan Castelan 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs As enlisted Airmen, earning the next rank is highly competitive. Studying, boards, enlisted performance reports, awards, decorations and career development courses all play a part in the Weighted Airman Promotion System, which puts Airmen vying for limited promotions against their peers. How else can Airmen put on that next stripe? Every year a select few between the ranks of senior airman and technical sergeant are selected through the Stripes for Exceptional Performers program. “Being STEP promoted isn’t a sudden occurrence; it’s a full picture of an Air Force career,” said Master Sgt. Marius Francisco, 86th Logistics Readiness Squadron combat readiness section chief. “You have to actively nominate someone who’s been constantly performing above their level.” Recently, three Airmen from the 86th Airlift Wing, one Airman from

the 435th Air Ground Operations Wing and one from U.S. Air Forces in Europe “tacked” on their next stripe through the STEP program. But what exactly is the STEP program? According to Air Force Instruction 36-2502, this program supplements existing Airmen promotion programs and is designed to accommodate

unique circumstances that, in the commander’s judgment, clearly warrant promotion. It is intended to provide a means to promote Airmen for compelling, although perhaps not quantifiable, reasons. Commanders then create a package explaining why they believe their Airman warrants such a promotion. “STEP promotions are intended to promote deserving Airmen who have consistently proven that they are more than ready for the next rank and just haven’t been selected yet under WAPS,” said Chief Master Sgt. James Morris, 86th AW command chief. “This honor is not to be used to promote Airmen early or before they are ready for the responsibility of their next rank, nor should it be based off a single heroic act or specific achievement. “We have so many quality Airmen here, but the few selected for STEP promotions were truly among the best,” the chief added. “I am very proud of what they have done for the Air Force and Team Ramstein.

Congratulations, and keep up the good work.” Airmen must also meet certain qualifications for STEP promotions. Senior airmen being promoted to staff sergeant must complete the Airmen Leadership School before being considered for STEP promotion and the resident NCO Academy before being considered for STEP promotion to master sergeant. A minimum of 12 months’ time in grade is required for STEP promotion to technical sergeant and master sergeant, while promotions to staff sergeant must have a minimum of six months TIG. The following Team Ramstein members were selected for promotion through the STEP program: Technical sergeant: • Kyle Marshall (435th AGOW) • Veronica Contreras (USAFE/A3) • Megan Johnson (86th AW) • Adam Fairbanks (86th AW) Master sergeant: • Timothy Ledford (86th AW)

WASHINGTON — Friends, family members, political leaders, former prisoners of war and service members paid their respects as an Air Force Ace was interred at Arlington National Cemetery Jan. 23. Brig. Gen. Robinson “Robbie” Risner, a Korean War fighter ace and Vietnam prisoner of war, died Oct. 22 at Bridgewater Retirement Community in Bridgewater, Va., at the age of 88. “America has lost one of its greatest heroes,” said Ross Perot, a close friend of Risner, during the service at the Memorial Chapel on Fort Myer, Va.

Though Risner’s life on earth has ended, his flying legacy lives on, Perot said, speaking about how Risner passed on his aviation wings for both Perot’s son and grandson to wear. “Robbie approved that my son Ross could pin Robbie’s wings on my grandson,” said Perot. “Can you imagine what that meant?” Perot went on to share anecdotes from throughout Risner’s celebrated career, describing him as an “Oklahoma cowboy” who was a hero and a friend, whose “love of God and love of country was what got him through seven and a half years as a prisoner of war.” But for many other POWs, they credited their survival to Risner’s leadership. “When the POWs came home from Vietnam, See HERO, Page 16

While imprisoned in Vietnam, Risner gathered fellow POWs for a church service — something that was strictly prohibited. While the troops were singing the song “Onward Christian Soldiers,” guards rushed in, taking Risner and two other leaders to what Perot referred to as “the box,” a place of solitary confinement. When this occurred, “more than 40 POWs stood proudly, some of whom are here today, and sang a strictly forbidden song, the ‘Star-Spangled Banner,’” Perot said. “How’s that for guts?” Upon Risner’s return from the POW camp, Perot asked him, “Robbie, what was going on in your mind as they dragged you back to the box?” He looked me in the eye. His eyes were twinkling. He said, “Perot, with

those guys singing the ‘StarSpangled Banner,’ I was 9 feet tall. I could have gone bear hunting with a stick!” That moment and his words are reflected by a statue, exactly 9 feet high, that now stands at the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colo. Perot, a Navy veteran, closed with the note that “when you arrive at the pearly gates in Heaven, you will be warmly greeted by the United States Marines, guarding the gates.” Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. Mark A. Welsh III added to the humor of Perot’s remarks. “I hope the Marines in Heaven know where the officers’ club is,” Welsh said. “Because that’s where all the fighter pilots are going to be waiting for him.” Welsh spoke to the audience about Risner — someone Airmen should look up to. “He’s one of the greatest American Airmen ever,” Welsh said. “It’s really just that simple.” Welsh spoke about how

Risner’s life and legend means something different to everyone in the audience. “He’s an icon, he’s a founding father … a member of that special generation who did fight in three wars, built an Air Force, and showed us exactly what courage looks like. An American hero,” Welsh said. Addressing Risner’s fellow POWs in attendance, Welsh said, “I can’t imagine what he meant to you … I just can’t even imagine. “What some of you have told me is that he was a leader and a role model at a time in your life when you needed one terribly … a man that somehow maintained his human dignity, his character and his moral strength,” Welsh said. “They say they saw his conviction that they could survive, would survive … and they believed, because he believed. Officer RIF board to offer voluntary separation pay by Debbie Gildea Air Force Personnel Center Public Affairs JOINT BASE SAN ANTONIORANDOLPH, Texas — The Air Force will convene an officer reduction in force board June 16 to evaluate eligible officers for retention, Air Force Personnel Center officials said Monday. Officers who meet the RIF board and are not selected for retention must separate by Jan. 31, 2015. RIF is among several fiscal 2014 force management programs that have been or will be implemented to help achieve manpower and force structure goals as the service focuses on 2015 and beyond, said Lt. Col. Rick Garcia, the AFPC retirements and separations branch chief. Prior to convening the board, the Air Force will accept applications from RIF-eligible officers for the voluntary separation pay and Temporary Early Retirement Authority programs. RIF-eligible officers may apply for voluntary separation pay between Feb. 6 and May 1. Those approved will receive 1.25 times the standard full separation pay and may apply for separation effective Sept. 29, Garcia said. Officers who meet the RIF board and are selected for separation will be entitled to full separation pay. To review VSP eligibility and application instructions, go to myPers and enter “PSDM 14-08 in the search window. Eligible officers may also apply for TERA between Jan. 14 and March 26. To review TERA eligibility and application instructions, go to myPers and enter “PSDM 13-128 in the search window. Officers eligible to meet the RIF board include line of the Air Force, biomedical sciences corps, dental corps, medical corps, medical service corps and nurse corps captains in year groups 2005-2008 and LAF majors in year groups 2001-2003 with the above majors in year groups from 1997-2007 depending on the specific non-line corps. The board will also consider LAF-J officers with a date of rank to major from May 1, 2010, through Sept. 30,

2013. Officers with fewer than six years of active commissioned time or 18 years or more of total active-duty service as of Jan. 31, 2015, will not be considered for RIF. In addition, officers on an approved promotion list and those with less than a year of time in grade by Jan. 31, 2015, will not be considered. Officers eligible for retirement or within two years of eligibility by the mandatory separation date will also not meet the board. Officers selected for separation will not have to pay back funds associated with education, permanent change of station, and other active-duty service commitment programs, but may have to repay any Post 9/11 GI Bill benefits transferred to their families, if they have not fulfilled the associated ADSC, Garcia said. All separating and retiring Airmen must attend a transition assistance program offered at their local Airman & Family Readiness Center. The program includes congressionally mandated pre-separation counseling; a required five-day transition workshop; veterans benefit briefings, which include details on disability; one-on-one assistance to develop an individual transition plan; and a capstone, which requires commander concurrence that the member has met all career readiness standards. Other related services include employment resources, financial planning and management, spouse employment assistance, relocation assistance, and general information and referral. “We highly encourage all Airmen affected by force management programs to sign up early for a TAP class, Garcia said. “Force management coupled with routine separations and retirement activities will have a significant impact on availability. So waiting until you learn the results of the board may prevent you from getting into a conveniently scheduled class. For more information about the reduction in force and voluntary separation pay, including application instructions, go to myPers and enter “PSDM 13-130 in the search window.

Oral health: Teach your child early by Master Sgt. Lisan Burñey 86th Dental Squadron Develop oral health practices with your baby early, and you will set in motion healthy dental habits that will last a lifetime. February is National Children’s Dental Health Month, and the Ramstein Dental Clinic offers these helpful tips for developing an effective oral health strategy for your child: • Take your child to see the dentist regularly, beginning by the child’s first birthday. • Do not put your child to bed with a bottle. • Wipe your infant’s mouth with a clean wash cloth after feeding. • Start brushing as soon as the first tooth erupts. • Begin flossing when two teeth begin to touch. • Brush and floss your child’s teeth daily until the child can be taught to take care of their teeth unsupervised (around age 8). • Encourage your child to continue brushing and flossing daily. Do occasional spot checks to keep them on track. • Make sure your child gets the fluoride needed for decay-resistant teeth. • Ask about dental sealants. A sealant is a protective barrier that shields the chewing surfaces of back teeth against tooth decay. • Encourage a low sugar, healthy diet for your child and your family. • Be sure your child wears a mouth guard if they participate in sports. Attitudes and habits established at an early age are critical in maintaining good oral health throughout life. During the month of February, dentists and technicians from the Ramstein Dental Clinic will be visiting area schools, youth centers, child development centers and libraries promoting healthy dental habits. Join us in the Kaiserslautern Military Community Center food court on from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday for more information on preventive dentistry. Visit www.ADA.org for more information from the American Dental Association.

Students from Ramstein, Baumholder, Vicenzia and Patch American high schools visited Prague recently to debate in a simulation of the United Nations with other students from all over the world. Students were able to write resolutions themselves, then give speeches and ask questions promoting or challenging these resolutions. “We were split into committees,” said Kenneth Magana, Ramstein High School senior. “I was in environmental, so we debated biofuel. Once your resolution is passed by the committee, you just present it in general assembly.” The assembly included every committee with more than 300 students from across the globe.

“What really stuck out was all the people we met,” Magana said. “They’re from all over the world. We had kids from Russia, Egypt and California.” It wasn’t the participants’ differences that brought them together though, it was their similarities. “I enjoy opportunities to interact with other kids my age from different parts of the world,” said Katie Rice, Ramstein High School senior. “I debated with them and engaged in a thoughtful banter.” When they weren’t speaking in committees with each other, students had the chance to explore Prague. “The Golden City is the most beautiful in all of Europe,” said Bobby Ramirez, Ramstein High School senior. As part of their study of the city, students were shown

a documentary on the Velvet Revolution in Prague and got to speak with Monika Pajerova, the spokeswoman for the University Strike Committee during the revolution. “It was really interesting to see someone who was not just part of the documentary, but part of the Velvet Revolution,” Magana said. “When she said she had been afraid, I realized at one point she was just like us students.” The documentary resonated with many of the students who hope to use their experiences in Prague to become actively involved in solving world issues in the future. This shared enthusiasm for working with others from different cultures to resolve difficult situations made the conference a meaningful simulation of the real United Nations.

Hospital downsizes with Leaner LRMC Challenge by Chuck Roberts Landstuhl Regional Medical Center Public Affairs Landstuhl Regional Medical Center began a “staff reduction” Jan. 21. No one lost their job, but approximately 270 military and civilian staff members participated in an event to drop a few pounds and adopt healthier lifestyles during the Leaner LRMC Challenge. The 10-week event was designed to embrace the Army surgeon general’s performance triad focused on activity, nutrition and sleep. Individual and team winners will be announced at the LRMC awards and recognition ceremony in April. “We’re going to show them what the performance triad is all about,” said LRMC Commander Col. Judith Lee in kicking off the campaign before a crowd of motivated participants representing about 25 teams. Participants will earn points through a wide variety of activities, such as attending weekly classes on performance triad topics (e.g., dining out) or by participating in scheduled events, such as the MWR St. Patrick’s Day 5K Run/Walk March 15 at Landstuhl. Points also will be awarded for improvements in weight reduction, waist circumference and body fat. To keep things focused on health, a new vending machine offering healthy alternatives was installed on the second floor above 4-Corners, and the Under 500 Calorie Plate is displayed daily on the main

Baumholder to host Children of Alcoholics Awareness Week by U.S. Army Garrison Baumholder Army Substance Abuse Program BAUMHOLDER — U.S. Army Garrison Baumholder’s Army Substance Abuse Program will host Children of Alcoholics Awareness Week Feb. 9 to 15 to help raise

awareness of the risk factors and long-term trauma of alcohol abuse on children and families. Activities include a free showing of the 2013 film “Saving Mr. Banks,” starring Emma Thompson and Tom Hanks, at 4 p.m. Feb. 12 at the Wagon Wheel Theater on

Smith Barracks. Participants will have the opportunity before, during and after to meet with specialists and discuss what they have viewed or personally experienced. The film delves into the painful truths about the author P.L. Travers and the real-life inspiration for her

most famous character, Mary Poppins, said Sarah Phillips, ASAP prevention coordinator. “We welcome all ages to this film. It’s especially important that caregivers see this movie with their children to gain a better understanding not only of themselves, but of their children as well,” Phillips said. Other events include an informational booth from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Feb. 13 in the Community Mail Room lobby and Al-Anon training from 1 to 2 p.m. Feb. 14 at the Baumholder Health Clinic, Room 3105, Bldg. 8743. Al-Anon is a self-help support group that provides guidance and resources to a person who is either living with someone or grew up in a home with an individual who had a severe alcohol problem. Because severe abuse often alters how the adults in their lives cope with routine events, it’s important to make sure the involved children are properly cared for, said Greg Pryor, ASAP prevention coordinator. “A person who has a severe

alcohol problem actually has their brain altered. This brain change gets in the way of emotions, memories, feelings and judgment,” Pryor said. These changes create cravings for alcohol that are five times stronger than our hardwired instinctual craving to eat food when we are hungry. These brain changes can affect parenting skills and the emotional support they provide their children. “Children who grow up in this environment have been negatively impacted. It’s our goal during Children of Alcoholic Awareness Week to help people understand their childhood and encourage them to create new family traditions,” Pryor said. ASAP offers additional educational programs and rehabilitation services to help those who have been adversely impacted by secondhand drinking. For more information, call the Baumholder ASAP clinic at 485-1710 or 06783-6-1710. To speak with an adolescent substance abuse counselor, call 0162-234-1790.

veryone knows how important teamwork is in baseball. What many don’t realize is that it’s important in an individual sport such as swimming, too. The Kaiserslautern Kingfish know that and recently had the Little League World Championship organization recognize them and their proven teamwork. When one of their own, Kingfish member Trevin Elliot, 12, was diagnosed with Large B Cell Lymphoma in

October, his teammates wanted to support him as he went through the rigors of chemotherapy. So, in November, team captains Everett Plocek and Thomas Davey organized a head shaving event to let Trevin know his team was there for him. Twentytwo swimmers got together at the Kaiserslautern Military Community Center, and oneby-one, with the team captains and Trevin’s brothers, Taeve and Tuck, leading the way, the swimmers shaved

their heads. While the event coincided with the defense of their long distance championship title, everyone present knew Trevin’s battle was the more serious one. Sgt. Cory Leatherman of Kaiserslautern AFN also came to cover the event. His story on Trevin and the team was viewed online by Carolyn Haon, grandmother of Kingfish swimmers Noah and Chloe Craig. Noah was one of the team members who shaved his head. Haon, in

turn, told a friend of hers who works at the headquarters of the Little League World Series in Williamsport, Va. The staff and CEO of the Little League World Series were so touched by the story they decided to do something for the swimmers who braved the cold November winds in Germany with no hair. As a surprise, on Jan. 18, at the last home meet of the season, the boys of the Kingfish swim team who shaved their heads were all presented with

official Little League World Championship baseball caps. The caps were presented in appreciation of their support of Trevin and to recognize the value of teamwork and camaraderie. The caps were much enjoyed by all. As an added bonus, if all goes well, Trevin may be home soon to rejoin his father and brothers who miss him so much and the team that cannot wait to see him again.
