SNCO symposium stresses development, leadership

Senior NCOs attend the 86th Medical Group Senior NCO Symposium Jan. 17 on Ramstein. Speakers at the symposium covered topics such as career field functional manager perspectives, ethical leadership, deliberate development and the stratification process.

Story and photos by Airman 1st Class Joshua Magbanua 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs The 86th Medical Group Top 3 conducted its first Senior NCO Symposium Jan. 17 on Ramstein.

Senior NCOs from the 86 MDG, along with an Army counterpart, gathered to discuss ways they can build upon their experience and strengthen their leadership. “Senior NCOs are very good at mentoring the Airman tier, NCO tier, company grade officer tier and

civilians, but sometimes we forget about ourselves,” said Senior Master Sgt. Daniel Stellabotte, 86th Dental Squadron dental laboratory superintendent. “In order for us to be better leaders, to still provide that mentorship and development for our people, we sometimes need to look

in the mirror and develop ourselves. “So the purpose is for us to gain something for our toolbox, become better and then pass that on to our Airmen, NCOs, CGOs and civilians,” Stellabotte added. See SYMPOSIUM, Page 3

LVIS Gate to change traffic flow in February A change to the flow of traffic through the Large Vehicle Inspection Site Gate on Ramstein is slated to take effect in February. The change was planned for the

opening of a new vehicle inspection station and will control traffic by pushing large vehicles, such as delivery trucks, through the new inspection building, while smaller personally owned vehicles will go through the temporary inspection tent.

“The new inspection building and the plan for traffic flow will help increase our throughput for vehicles,” said ZB7 Uwe Stamm, 86th Security Forces Squadron LVIS Gate supervisor. “This helps us out tremendously because we can see up to 250-350 large vehicles a day. The

USAFE course stresses innovation, efficiency Story and photo by Staff Sgt. Timothy Moore 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs The U.S. Air Forces in Europe and Air Forces Africa Innovation and Transformation office hosted more than 40 leaders from units throughout the major command at one of two Continuous Process Improvement Senior Leader courses during the week of Jan. 9 to 13 on Ramstein. The two-day courses offered leaders from all levels the opportunity to learn how to better leverage the CPI resources they have within their organizations. “I’ve always looked at CPI not as a program I run but one that Airmen run,” said Maj. Gen. Timothy Zadalis, USAFE-AFAFRICA vice commander, at the beginning of the course. “I believe the worst thing I can do is take a program like this and top-down direct it. What I love about this program is every individual is empowered to make a difference, but if you’ve got leadership who don’t allow them to, they’re never going to have the opportunity to make that difference.” Air Force leaders have recognized the need to become a slimmer and more efficient organization; they have also recognized the need to look at the improvement methods in a different way. “If you look at the definition of a lean organization, any definition you might find out there in literature or in industry, and compare it to the culture of the Air Force as it is now, you’ll see they are not the same,”

Maj. Gen. Timothy Zadalis, U.S. Air Forces in Europe and Air Forces Africa vice commander, speaks to attendees of a Continuous Process Improvement Senior Leader course Jan. 9 on Ramstein. Zadalis challenged the leaders to allow, encourage and support their Airmen to make the changes their units and the Air Force needs to be a more efficient organization.

said Phil Chansler, Air University Assistant Professor of Management Operations and CPI Senior Leader course instructor. “There are certain things in a lean organization that aren’t really compatible with the way the Air Force does business.” A lean organization is one that understands customer value and focuses its key processes to continuously increase it. The ultimate goal of a lean organization is to provide more value for customers with fewer resources. Chansler said lean ideas can come from anywhere and anyone, and this course helped leaders reduce the negative effects that can occur when becoming a more lean organization — especially in an organization as regimented as the Air Force.

“In my view, the Senior Leader course is to give an understanding of how to better manage the CPI resources they might have, as well as strategy development for their organizations,” Chansler said. The Senior Leader course not only gives leaders the tools needed to enable specially trained facilitators, Green and Black Belts, within their units but also the willingness to see the ideas for change come from any Airman. “You and I have to be that open mind, then we will get the absolute real change we really need,” Zadalis said. Though much of the course was in-class instruction, the attendees also had a chance to tour a John Deere factory to see how a civilian

organization implements some of the tools with which the leaders were being equipped. At the John Deere factory, the leaders were able to see and hear firsthand how effective and motivated a team can be when their leaders encourage them to make improvements from the ground up, echoing Zadalis’ challenge to them. “My challenge to you: You’ve got to be receptive and encourage those who can really make a difference,” Zadalis said. “You know your program is successful when your Airmen are not looking to you for the things they need to look at, but rather they are looking to you to inspire and support them because they have already found what needs to change.”

first week of February, cold weather may push back the intended date. “Right now the only concern we have is the weather,” Stamm said. “For us to mark the road with lines, the weather has to be at least 5 degrees Celsius.”

As soon as the weather gets warmer, the roads can be marked, and then the barricades can be put in place to help direct the flow of traffic after the change. “Other than the flow of traffic, not much else will change,” Stamm said. “Identification will still be checked at the gate, and cars will

still drive through as normal while large vehicles will go through the inspection stations.” As long as the change takes place, Stamm cautions drivers to take it slow on the road when entering the base through the LVIS Gate. “Personnel entering the gate should be sure to drive very slowly

because we have personnel walking in the area,” Stamm said. “Drivers should also be aware that there may be a change to the speed limit in the area to help maintain a safe entry to base.” The change in traffic flow at the LVIS Gate will have no effect on the normal operating hours of the gate.

National Children’s Dental Health Month by Dr. Christianna Moore Ramstein Dental Clinic

February is National Children’s Dental Health Month. Every year, dental providers strive to improve the health and awareness of children and their teeth. We live in a fast-paced world with children often sipping on drinks, other than water and snacking on sugary or starchy foods throughout the course of a day. One of the risk factors for early childhood cavities is frequent and prolonged exposure of a baby’s teeth to liquids such as fruit juice, milk or formula, which all contain sugar. Americans are consuming foods and drinks high in sugar and starches more often and in larger portions than ever before. Junk foods and drinks gradually have replaced nutritious beverages and foods for many people. Alarmingly, the average teenage boy in the U.S. conSYMPOSIUM, from Page 1

Throughout the day, various speakers covered topics such as career field functional manager perspectives, ethical leadership, deliberate development and the stratification process. Even though the speakers led the sessions, participants were encouraged to ask questions and provide input. The symposium was designed to be interactive, Stellabote said. “Without the interaction

sumes 81 gallons of soft drinks each year. A steady diet of sugary foods and drinks can ruin teeth. Sugar on teeth provides food for plaque bacteria, which produce acid. The acid in turn can eat away the enamel on teeth, creating cavities. Almost all foods have some type of sugar that cannot and should not be eliminated from our diets. Many of these foods contain important nutrients and add enjoyment to eating, but there is a risk for tooth decay from a diet high in sugars and starches. Starches can be found in everything from bread to pretzels to salad dressing, so read labels and plan carefully for a balanced, nutritious diet for you and your kids. Here are some ways to reduce your child’s risk of tooth decay: • Sugary foods and drinks should be consumed with meals. Saliva production increases during meals

Wright, U.S. Air Forces in Europe and Air Forces Africa command chief, who is slated to become the 18th chief master sergeant of the Air Force. Wright began his Air Force career in the medical field as a dental assistant specialist and spoke to the audience about the importance of deliberate development and pursuing excel-

and helps neutralize acid production and rinse food particles from the mouth. • Limit between-meal snacks. If kids crave a snack, offer them nutritious foods such as fruits, vegetables and cheese. • If your child chews gum, make it sugarless. Chewing sugarless gum after eating can increase saliva flow and help wash out food and decayproducing acid. There are some great options available that list xylitol as the first ingredient, which is preferred over the sugar substitute sorbitol. • Monitor beverage consumption. Instead of soft drinks, juices and sports drinks, children should consume water and low-fat milk. • Help your children develop good brushing and flossing habits. Parents need to help children brush twice and floss once daily. • Infants should always finish their bedtime bottle or nursing,

brush teeth and then be placed in bed. • Encourage your children to drink from a cup by their first birthday. • Schedule regular dental visits. The American Dental Association says that it is beneficial for the first dental visit to occur within six months of the appearance of the first tooth and no later than the child’s first birthday. If your child hasn’t seen a dentist yet or is just due for a visit, the 86th Dental Squadron is holding a Defeat Monster Mouth clinic for kids from 7:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Feb. 6. We will be performing dental examinations, cleanings and educational services. It is open to ID cardholders for children up to 10 years old. Call the dental clinic to schedule your appointment at 06371-46-2210 or 479-2210. Let us help your child have a great dental experience.

“Knowledge development is a continuous process, and it’s never going to stop, even after we leave the Air Force,” Stellabotte said. “As senior leaders, it’s always good to reflect back and remember where we came from, and

part of that is by putting together a symposium … or something that’s value added where we can learn from each other and improve upon our leadership skills, as well as our professional development as a whole.”

721 APS local national celebrates 39 years of stellar service

Gertrude “Gertie” Grosskopf, 721st Aerial Port Squadron fleet service supervisor and air transportable galley and lavatory manager, takes a photo with members of the 721 APS on the flightline of Ramstein. Gertie is retiring after serving the Air Force for more than 39 years. During her time, she became known as the go-to person for the ATGLs not only in the squadron but for all of Air Mobility Command.

by Staff Sgt. Timothy Moore 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs After nearly four decades of dedicated work, one would hope they have left a mark on their work center. One 721st Aerial Port Squadron member has done that and more. As the 721 APS fleet service supervisor, Gertrude Grosskopf has trained many fleet services Airmen who have come through Ramstein since she started working for the Air Force in May 1977. “I like showing the new Airmen their work but also why they are doing their work,” said Gertie, as she is affectionately called. Gertie, who retires today, said she likes to instill in Airmen that they are helping to showcase the Air Force to the world but also provide a comfortable place for the individuals

who use the aircraft they keep clean, including distinguished visitors such as the president of the United States or service members who are transporting medical evacuees. The comfort Gertie speaks of is best shown when looking at air transportable galley and lavatory units, which also happen to be the items that have made her a living legend. ATGLs are portable mini kitchen and toilet units that are put on flights that require extra comfort or added lavatory facilities, and as the 721 APS ATGL manager, Gertie is the go-to person for the squadron. “When the new Airmen come in, she’s presented as their supervisor, their boss,” said Tech. Sgt. Michael Lewis, who served as the 721 APS fleet services flight chief during his time at Ramstein. “Honestly, as long

as she’s been here, I consider her my boss. With the continuity and knowledge she has, I’d be stupid not to think that way.” Lewis isn’t the only one to think that way, as Gertie is also often referred to as the go-to person for all of Air Mobility Command. In fact, people have been sent to her from all over the world to be trained on maintenance and care for the current ATGL units. Her own training on the ATGLs began when she took it upon herself to learn how to do maintenance on the old ATGL units they used in 1979. “I would open them up, look to the (technical order) and do everything on my own,” Gertie said. “When the brand new ones came out, they got very expensive because of the additions to them. I told them if they

wanted me to take over the new ones like I did with the old ones, they have to give me a building where I can work on them and keep them out of the weather.” Gertie got an area to store and work on the new units, and she also got sent to training to become more knowledgeable about the new units. “I did it because it is my job,” Gertie said. “People appreciate my work, and they trusted me to do my job.” Luckily, Gertie did do her job and obtained the knowledge to remain the go-to person on ATGLs, but she didn’t keep it to herself. Over the years, she received people from around the Air Force who she trained on the ATGLs. Gertie estimates she’s trained more than 1,000 people on the units. “I think what I’ll miss most is doing my part, putting my knowledge into the squadron,” Gertie said. “You know when it comes to work everyone is replaceable in some form or another, but not me with ATGLs. Of course, someone will be able to do the job, but not the way I do it.” The 721 APS is part of the 521st Air Mobility Operations Wing, headquartered at Ramstein.

Learning from tragedy: Instructor’s past prepares him for present

Staff Sgt. Karriem Abdulahad, 86th Security Forces Squadron training instructor, teaches the Expeditionary Active Shooter Training course information to his students Dec. 15 on Ramstein. Abdulahad adds personal information to the course by informing students about his experience with active-shooter situations.

Story and photos by Airman 1st Class D. Blake Browning 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs While many people look at extreme situations and think to themselves, “It could never happen to me,” they run the risk of allowing those same unfortunate circumstances to occur. Staff Sgt. Karriem Abdulahad, 86th Security Forces Squadron training instructor, teaches his students what to do if they ever face a situation involving an active shooter like he did years ago. “Before I joined the military, there was a situation at my job,” Abdulahad said. “There was a real-world activeshooter situation where this material could have worked.” The Expeditionary Active Shooter Training course is predeploymentfocused material that is practical enough to use every day. The course trains Airmen how to react if they ever find themselves in an activeshooter situation. “It’s very beneficial being in that situation and now doing what I do,” Abdulahad said. “I can actually help avoid a mass casualty scenario.”

High stress coupled with the improbability of active-shooter situations are two of the most dangerous factors facing the victims involved with the event. At any moment, not knowing what to do could cost someone their life. “An individual came into the place where I was working at the time,” Abdulahad said. “He went up to the mother of his child, and he requested the child. At that time, the child was in a swim class, and the way the building was set up, there was a window facing the pool where spectators could see all of the kids. When the mother refused the father access to the child, the individual began to get loud and started an argument. Eventually, my boss came out in an effort to diffuse the situation. They began speaking lower, but within the next three minutes, I heard a gunshot.” With lives on the line, a moment of hesitation could have devastating effects. “With active shooters, because they are so random and so unexpected, it’s one of those things where you have to know what to do,” Abdulahad said. In high-stress situations the typi-

cal physical reactions are flight, fight or freeze, the most dangerous being the latter. “There was something slightly in place for active-shooter situations but it wasn’t anything we practiced,” Abdulahad said. “With that being said, the instructors and swim coaches did something. They got the kids out of the pool, and they went

out of the escape route.” In the wake of events like these, the only thing that can be done is to learn, grow and prevent incidences like this from occurring ever again. “My hope at the end of the day is that you learn,” Abdulahad said. “You learn and really take into consideration the things that can happen, because they can happen.”

Staff Sgt. Karriem Abdulahad, 86th Security Forces Squadron training instructor, demonstrates how to correctly exit a facility during an active-shooter situation Dec. 15 on Ramstein. During the EAST course, Abdulahad simplifies uncommon thought processes, giving Airmen the best chance for survival.

Knights Brigade helps move 3/4 ID vehicles across Europe by Sgt. 1st Class Michael O’Brien 16th Sustainment Brigade Public Affairs

BREMERHAVEN, Germany — Soldiers from 16th Sustainment Brigade assisted 3rd Armored Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, with offloading the heavy brigade’s equipment from cargo ships in the North Sea port city of Bremerhaven and transporting it to the BergenHohne Training Area railhead almost 100 miles inland from January 6 to 18. Elements from the brigade’s 18th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion quartered themselves in Bremen for about a week in anticipation of receiving the first of about 4,000 Soldiers from the Iron Brigade to kick off continuous nine-month rotations of ABCTs to central and eastern Europe in support of U.S. Army Europe’s Atlantic Resolve. “The conditions that the 16th Sustainment Brigade has set for the success of this mission extend from the headquarters to the Movement Control Team we have embedded in the Theater Movement Center,” said Maj. Gen. Duane Gamble, 21st Theater Sustainment Command commanding general. “The life support areas that enable combat power in the assembly areas are set because of the work the 16th Sust. Bde. has done from the command team down to the last squad leader.” The first order of business for the Knights was moving the 3/4 ABCT’s approximate 2,800 pieces of equipment, including 87 tanks, 144 Bradley fighting vehicles and Paladin selfpropelled howitzers, off three supercargo ships and on to Poland, where they will support the ABCT before it disburses its battalions to seven countries ranging from the Baltic to the Black Sea. “The 18th CSSB is working the movement piece for the brigade here, helping 21st Theater Sustainment

Command manage the flow of 3/4 ABCT’s equipment into the European theater,” said Lt. Col. Robb Meert, the battalion’s commanding officer, who is overseeing the movement of the vehicles from here to an inland railhead for onward movement to Poland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Romania, Hungary and Bulgaria. “We transported more than 500 pieces of equipment and vehicles about 100 miles over six days, and that was just the beginning.” This logistical endeavor was spearheaded by U.S. Army Europe’s 21st Theater Sustainment Command, with the Knights Brigade serving a major role in the rail, line haul and military convoys that moved the vehicles, equipment and troops. “The 16th Sustainment Brigade is serving a vital role for the readiness of the regionally allocated armored brigade rotations in Europe,” said Col. Michelle M.T. Letcher, the brigade’s commander. “We enabled the Iron Brigade to execute their speed

of assembly while building combat power to maintain a dynamic security presence on the continent.” Every morning before dawn had broken over the icy port, Sgt. James Morrison, a recovery operator with 66th Transportation Company, 18th CSSB, climbed onto his M984 recovery truck to make preventive checks and services in case the German stevedores could not start some vehicles because of the below-freezing weather. “The job my partner and I had was helping to recover vehicles as they rolled off the ships,” said junior leader Morrison. “We worked with the German longshoremen and even though they are civilians and not military, it still feels like we’re building on our alliance.” It was just one example of maintaining readiness that he and other 16th Sust. Bde. Soldiers performed once the vehicles and equipment rolled off the supercargo ship Resolve, the first of three ocean lin-

ers used for the movement. To put the size of the ships into perspective, each can hold 5,000 passenger cars. The second and third ships were appropriately named Freedom and Endurance. “The Army hasn’t moved this much equipment into a theater in a while, and it went well,” said Capt. Steven Waugh, 66th Trans. Co. commander. “Providing support to 3/4 ABCT proves my unit’s capability to deploy.” Many of the Knights Brigade’s subordinate units also got in on the action once the equipment got to the railhead at Bergen-Hohne Training Area. “Our team worked with allies in the U.K., Germany, Poland and the Netherlands to support moving combat power on this continent,” said Capt. Rebecca Deal, 627th Movement Control Team commander. “We provided knowledge on the ‘European flavor’ on movement within this theater and shared it with 3/4, who is gaining experience through this joint operation.” The Fort Carson, Colorado, based unit brought M-1 Abrams tanks, M-2 Bradley infantry fighting vehicles, HMMWVs, tracked field artillery, logistics vehicles and other support equipment. “There’s no way we could be doing what we’re doing here in the port all the way to the theater assembly areas in Poland without the professionals of the 16th Sustainment Brigade,” said Maj. Gen. Tim McGuire, U.S. Army Europe’s deputy commanding general. The armored rotational brigade is making good on the U.S. commitment to the U.S. European strategic alliance. “This was a team effort across levels of the Army to get this done,” Meert said. “It’s monumental to do a theater-opening process here in Europe, and we’re collectively figuring out the best way to do things to help the next armored BCT rotation.”

Army Reserve Soldiers, units must be ready, flexible by Lt. Col. Jefferson Wolfe 7th Mission Support Command Public Affairs

Army Reserve Soldiers and units must be ready to conduct their mission at any time or place and adjust to whatever conditions or changes they face, the commanding general of U.S. Army Reserve Command told the commander and other leaders of the 7th Mission Support Command. To illustrate, Lt. Gen. Charles Luckey took a black Sharpie marker out of his notebook and wrote a series

of letters on a stack of paper. Luckey held up the paper, which read, “SOTWISUF.” He asked more than a dozen people in the room if they were familiar with the acronym. None of the leaders knew what it stood for. “It stands for ‘Something Other Than What I Signed Up For,’” Luckey said. Soldiers often face conditions they didn’t expect or plan for, Luckey added. This highlights how Army Reserve Soldiers have to be prepared at all times to deploy and perform their mis-

sion, and be flexible enough to excel in any mission they are assigned, Luckey said. “That’s who we are,” Luckey said. Luckey visited the 7th MSC Jan. 22, speaking to leaders and Soldiers from the headquarters and subordinate units, including the 361st Civil Affairs Brigade, Medical Support Unit – Europe, the 773rd Civil Support Team, the 406th Human Resources Command, the 589th Engineer Detachment and the 446th Transportation Battalion (Movement Control). Leaders need to engage to ensure

individual readiness and collective readiness, Luckey said. “It’s important that Soldiers and staff get to hear it from him — from the three-star level,” said Brig. Gen. Steven W. Ainsworth, the 7th MSC commanding general. “It’s very refreshing” to have the commanding general of all the Army Reserve to validate the 7th MSC leadership’s emphasis on individual and collective training, Ainsworth said. Ainsworth has been emphasizing See ARMY RESERVE, Page 13

Correct way to dispose of bulk trash, other waste Story and photo by Petra Lessoing 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs

Residents in the villages of the Kaiserslautern County and in the city of Kaiserslautern each have specific dates for the pickup of waste. They should have received booklets and schedules listing pickup dates and tips for trash disposal in January. Bulk waste: Each year, the Kaiserslautern County and the city of Kaiserslautern offer residents their own pickup days for bulk trash; twice a year if needed. To schedule a pick up in the city of Kaiserslautern, call 0631-365-3521. Residents living in the Kaiserslautern County, should call 0631-7105-505 or email sperrmuell@kaiserslauternkreis.de. The bulk trash should be placed at the edge of the sidewalk by 7 a.m. the day of pick up. Bulk trash includes all items residents would not take when moving and items, which don’t fit in a regular garbage can. Bulk items include carpets, suitcases, mattresses, boxes and furniture such as chairs, tables, couch sets and bed frames. The items must not weigh more than 50 kilograms and be wider than 1.70 meters. Two vehicles will pick up the trash. One vehicle only picks up wooden items, and the second vehicle collects non-recyclable items.

Residents in the county of Kaiserslautern can place their trash in the brown bio container, yellow bag, grey residual waste can and blue paper container. Each household should have received a schedule of pickup dates for their community.

Residents are asked to separate their bulk trash and place it accordingly. Bulk waste is picked up at no charge and in quantities of less than three cubic meters. For larger quantities, a fee will get charged. For the first time this year, the city of Kaiserslautern offers a fee-based express pickup of bulky items within three days. Call the same number: 0631-365-3521 for details and dates. Construction and renovation items such as stones, windows and doors, as well as trees, large branches, oil tanks, barrels and car parts are not considered bulk trash. Electrical appliances such as washing machines, dishwashers, lawnmowers, refrigerators and freezers are not accepted in a bulk trash pick up. To get rid of these items, residents must arrange a separate pick-up day.

Electrical appliances: Small electrical appliances, which are smaller than a shoe carton can be dropped off in the Umweltmobil (environmental vehicle), a special vehicle that stops at certain locations in the villages. In the city, residents should take their small appliances to the recycling center on Daenner Strasse 17, down the street from the gate to Kleber Kaserne. Large electrical appliances such as washers, dishwashers, stoves, will be picked up in the city and the communities. Residents should call the waste management office (see numbers above) to arrange a date. Recyclable glass: Glass and glass bottles are also items that should be dropped off in special containers set up throughout Kaiserslautern and the villages. They must be dropped according to color — white, brown or green. Since the drop-off creates a lot of noise, residents should stick to specific hours: 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., and 3 to 7 p.m. No waste deposit on Sundays and holidays. Hazardous waste: The hazardous waste truck

comes once a month to specific locations in every community. Residents can bring adhesives, any type of battery, cooking oil, oil stained rags, used oil, energy-saving light bulbs, fluorescent lights (do not break them), nail polish, paints and varnishes, small electrical appliances, etc. Residual waste: The residual waste includes cigarette butts, sanitary items, used wall paper, soiled paper, coal or pressed coal ashes, street sweepings, vacuum cleaner bags, worn shoes, hats, bags, textiles, cat litter and dog excrements. Residents receive grey trash cans for residual waste; the size depends on the number of people living in the home. It must be placed outdoors by 6 a.m. the day of pick up. Yellow bags: Waste to be placed in yellow bags includes packing material made out of plastics such as foils, plastic bags, plastic bottles from shampoos, detergents and cosmetics, yoghurt cups, margarine containers and packing foam; metals such as food cans, beverage cans, aluminum foils or lids; and compound materials such as juice and milk cartons and materials

for vacuum packing. Paper waste: In the city of Kaiserslautern and the county, residents store paper, cardboard and heavy cardboard such as newspapers, magazines, wrapping paper, books and food packing materials out of paper or cardboard in blue recycling bins. Organic waste: Organic waste from kitchen and garden such as leaves, lawn clippings, herbage, deceased plants, vegetables, fruit, coffee and tea bags, egg shells, bread, banana and citrus peels, paper towels, food left-overs except for meat or fish will be collected in the brown bio container. Residents, who want to compost their own organic waste on a compost pile in the backyard, don’t need such a container, but should ask their landlord to inform the waste disposal office about it. For more information, residents of the Kaiserslautern County can call the waste management office at 0631-7105-505 or visit www.kaiserslautern-kreis.de/ Verwaltung/Abfallwirtschaft. html, and click on the American flag. Now they can download the garbage guide or click on the QR code to download the app, which includes the amended refuse pickup plans and a reminder function for pickup days. Residents of the city of Kaiserslautern can call 0631-365-1700, or visit www. stadtbildpflege-kl.de, click on Service, Flyers and download English information. The German-American Community Office has garbage guides for the city and county of Kaiserslautern available for pickup. GACO is located on Lauterstrasse 2 in Kaiserslautern. Opening hours are 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays, and 2 to 6 p.m. Thursdays. More information on waste disposal is also available at the GACO website: www. gaco-kl.de (click on useful info, then on waste). Those living in areas outside the Kaiserslautern County, can call GACO at 0631-36330-10 to get the appropriate points of contact.

basis measures of readiness, for example, ensuring they meet height and weight standards, pass the Army Physical Fitness Test, maintain medical and dental readiness and meet other requirements, said Col. Alex Wells, the 7th MSC deputy commanding officer. Luckey understands the demands on the 7th MSC Soldiers, as they serve in the Army Reserve’s only forwardstationed unit in Europe, he said. “He recognized the great work they’re achieving and their contribution to the theater, said Col. Alex Wells, 7th MSC deputy commanding officer. The 7th MSC not only has to meet its Army Reserve commitments, but also must support United States Army Europe and the 21st Theater Sustainment Command, Ainsworth said. “I think it’s very important for the American people to know that, as a forward-based Army reserve unit, they’re getting a very good return on their investment, Ainsworth said. “We are a contributor to the Army Reserve, but also provide capability and capacity to the 21st and USAREUR at the same time. There are only three time zones in the world in which the Army Reserve does not have a consistent, persistent presence, Luckey said. “What makes us awesome is we’ve got 200,000 Soldiers spread from Bagram Air Force Base to Guam, Luckey said. It’s also part of Luckey’s job to make sure senior leaders in

Kaiserslautern American the various theaters of operation around the world understand what the Army Reserve can do to support their efforts. “We get asked to do things by all kinds of folks, Luckey told the 7th MSC audience. “My job is to say yes as often as I can and allow you to say yes as often as you want to. His goal is to create situations where the Army Reserve can provide a capability to the combatant commanders and the individual units can sustain and build their own readiness. “He recognizes the demands in theater, Wells said. “We have to determine a measure of effectiveness that proves a return on investment. In the past, the 7th MSC has provided a few individual Soldiers to support an exercise or operation, Wells said. This may contribute to individual readiness, but may not increase the unit’s collective readiness because it is not training together with all of its assigned Soldiers. Training events and exercises that enhance the 7th MSC’s readiness and capabilities are key, Ainsworth said. To see the command’s capabilities up close, Luckey visited a half-dozen static displays set up by the various units. While there, he spoke with dozens of 7th MSC Soldiers, and followed that up by meeting about a dozen more at the Clock Tower Cafe dining facility on nearby Kleber Kaserne. This kind of interaction builds the credibility of senior leaders, said Command Sgt. Maj. Raymond Brown, 7th MSC senior enlisted leader. “When senior leaders are

genuine, Soldiers know it and in Lt. Gen. Luckey, it came through, Brown said. “Any time any senior leader can engage Soldiers, it’s a positive, Ainsworth said. All Army Reserve Soldiers are part of a team, Luckey said. “The mission of this team at the end of the day is to win America’s wars, Luckey said. While the Army Reserve is largely a combat service and combat service support force, the main focus remains to “close with and destroy the enemy, Luckey added. Luckey is not worried about uncertain funding in a fiscally constrained environment, instead focusing on the capability the force has. “Whether we get bigger or smaller, we’re going to get more powerful, Luckey said. The key is to ensure that individual Soldiers and units are ready to perform their missions. Back to SOTWISUF, Soldiers and units must always be ready to go and prepared for anything, Luckey said. “Make sure you are ready to be employed and deployed anywhere on the planet, Luckey said. Ainsworth echoed Luckey’s statement, adding that almost any job description doesn’t cover everything a person will be asked to do. Ainsworth, too, had a unique acronym — “AAA-O. He used to wear it on the back of his hat until the Army told him he had to remove it. It stands for something Ainsworth lives by as a commander, namely “Anything, anywhere, anytime — bar nothing.

A dog goes on quest to discover his purpose in life over the course of several lifetimes with multiple owners. Starring Britt Robertson and Dennis Quad. Gold (R) Canada, the summer of 1898. A group of German settlers travel towards the far north in covered wagons with packhorses and their few possessions in tow. The seven travelers set off from Ashcroft, the final railway station. Along with their leader, flamboyant businessman Wilhelm Laser, they are hoping to find their fortune in the recently discovered gold fields of Dawson, but they have no idea of the stresses and dangers which lie ahead on their 2,500 kilometer journey. Before long, uncertainty, cold weather and exhaustion begin to take their toll and conflicts escalate. The journey leads these men and women deeper and deeper into a menacing wilderness. MERZIG – WOLF PARK

Photo by Nadezda Murmakova / Shutterstock.com

When we moved into our home, our landlord informed us that hunting wild boar was a popular pastime in our village. Of course, we haven’t seen the slightest hint of a boar in three years. But perhaps this awareness of living “amongst wild beasts” has left me with a skewed perception of my survival skills. That might explain why I packed up my husband and dog and brought them to a wolf park.

glimpse of the kindergarten. On our February visit, we saw one very pregnant timberwolf. We may have to head back this summer to see her offspring in person! Another highlight for kids is when the wolves howl. The arctic wolves in particular are prone to howling to greet visitors, but at certain times of day (morning and evening), the whole park ignites with guttural, unison howls.

in first (and make sure that we could exit freely). I led the pack, trying to think of any survival lessons that could be gleamed from Red Riding Hood.

Park Overview

Wolfspark Werner Freund is a free park in Merzig, Germany, which features eight different varieties of wolves. The park offers free parking and an expanse of around 20 km of walking paths in a beautiful wooded setting. The park is open daily (rain or shine) from 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. Dogs are permitted in the park on a leash. (As always, use your best judgment.)

Inside I was relieved to see that wolves are kept in large gated areas off the pedestrian path. It resembles a more rustic version of Jurassic Park. Although – to my knowledge – no deadly animals have escaped in this park. It’s actually quite peaceful and the majestic animals seem to welcome guests. There are even large wooden forts at either end of the park where you can climb to get a better view of some of the animals.

For a closer look at wolf interaction, join one of the guided tours of the park, which are offered the first Sunday of the month at 4 p.m. outside of the arctic wolf exhibit. The tours are only offered in German, but it offers an opportunity to see the wolves interact with the humans who have raised them. It is especially exciting on feeding days.

How to Get There

Inside the Park

Entrance to the Wolfspark had me a bit nervous. The turnstile made me think that maybe we were entering a wolf enclosure where the animals would not be separated from humans. There is no ticket booth, and no employee to provide instructions. It seemed to be a park “for wolves, by wolves” which left us wondering if we were visitors or lunch. My husband and I flipped a coin to see who would go

Trip Highlights

The caretakers here raise the wolves from pups and if you visit during the right time of year (spring) you might be lucky enough to catch a
