Gen. Mark August,

commander of the 86th Airlift Wing. “We showed the selection board why we are the DoD standard in mission, mission support, and execution. Staff Sgt. Jeric Hernandez, 86th Munitions Squadron quality assurance inspector, whose unit also was evaluated by the team, agreed. “I think our unit is the best in the Air Force because we have a culture of innovation that breeds fresh ideas,” said Hernandez. Each unit was inspected individually, but ultimately demonstrated Ramstein’s mission is executed by these individual units working together. “We are the best because no one person or unit is bigger than the mis-

Nowhere else is this concept seen as acutely as here.” The 86th should be proud of the hard work and flexibility of all the representatives of the 86th AW and its’ tenant units, said August. “All I can really say is thank you,” said August. “We shared what excellence looks like every single day, and there’s no doubt in my mind that we’re going to bring home the big

trophy on this one.” The Commander in Chief ’s annual Installation Excellence Award was established in 1985 by former President Ronald Reagan to highlight innovation and creativity by the people who maintain and operate U.S. military installations. Airlifter of the week: 86th MUNS Stockpile Management crew chief by Airman 1st Class Kristof J. Rixmann 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs An 86th Munitions Squadron Stockpile Management crew chief received the honor of being Ramstein’s Airlifter of the Week, Jan. 10. Johnson is credited for his work that set the stage for operations needed to free floor space for an important shipment received in Fall 2018 that ultimately guaranteed the successful delivery of munition containers. Johnson is responsible for the safe transportation, storage, and handling of a diverse munitions stockpile that supports home station requirements, as well as the entire United States Air Forces in Europe and Africa theater. Johnson, a Texas native, maintains munitions storage structures, ensuring the safety, security and reliability of the war reserve materiel stockpile. Scott Lockard, 86th Airlift Wing vice director, lauded U.S. Air Force Airman 1st Class Joseph R.S. Johnson for his excellence in executing the Air

Force’s mission across the European theater of operation. Johnson is striving for his five-level upgrade and is progressing ahead of his peers. Additionally, he was handselected for a swing shift re-warehousing crew based on his self-starting attitude and attention to detail. “Johnson is always the first to volunteer, not only for work tasks, but also wingman opportunities,” said U.S. Air Force Maj. Randon S. Davis, 86th Munitions Squadron commander. Specifically, Johnson has voluntarily taken standby duties on multiple occasions to enable others the opportunity to travel and enjoy time off. “Johnson embodies the wingman concept and routinely aids his peers with vehicle training and off duty transportation,” said Davis. The Airlifter of the Week program recognizes Ramstein Airmen who, through hard work and dedication, make the 86th AW the World’s Best Wing.

AF-wide lodging rate increase effective Jan. 1 by Secretary of the Air Force Public Affairs Effective Jan. 1, the Air Force Lodging Program has increased nightly lodging rates service-wide in support of Department of Defense reform objectives to make business operations more efficient and provide Airmen with an improved lodging experience. The rate adjustment is an essential step in the direction of the DoD’s directive for military services lodging programs to transition to a complete nonappropriated funds operations business model, eliminating appropriated funds support. As nightly room fees become the sole source of income to fund all Air Force Lodging operations, Air Force Lodging facilities will work with their local civil engineer squadrons to transition maintenance, service and sustainment, restoration and modernization. “The rate adjustment will allow Air Force Lodging to better maintain properties and modernize Air Force facilities for Airmen and their families,” said Horace L. Larry, Air Force Services director.

“Although there will be a fee increase, we remain committed to providing our customers affordable prices and comfortable stays.” In addition to the modernization benefits of the funding and rate changes, this change will also enable the Air Force to reallocate enlisted personnel currently supporting lodging across the services enterprise, allowing them to better support wartime requirements. To ensure long-range sustainment and improvements to the Air Force Lodging program, the new lodging rates are: • $70 visiting officer quarters/visiting quarters • $55 visiting Airman quarters • $77 temporary lodging facilities • $79 distinguished visiting quarters • $83 large distinguished visiting quarters The rate increase is within per diem levels for all locations and all room types. If a location has lower per diem rates, the lodging rate will match the local per diem rate. The Air Force will contin-

ue to provide Space Available customers affordable, quality lodging options where and when lodging capacity exceeds

mission requirements. In addition, reservations made prior to the rate change will be charged the new rates as of Jan. 1, 2019. For more information on Air

Force Lodging program changes, view the frequently asked questions at https://www.af.mil/ Portals/1/documents/2019%20 SAF%20story%20attachments/Lodging%20Questions.

How to safely dispose of medicines • Never flush unused medicine down the drain or toilet! • Please wrap it into a newspaper or paper bag, put it into a waste bag, tie up the bag and throw it into the black can. The reason for this procedure is that the can might topple before it is emptied or that children look into it and mistake pills for sweets. • If the package insert contains a specific note (e.g. for cytostatic agents in cancer drugs), do not dispose of these drugs in the black can, but take them to the hazardous waste truck (Umweltmobil) or the ZAK recycling center. By doing so, you can prevent unauthorized access by third persons. • Paper boxes and inserts go in the paper can. It is not required to remove pills from their direct packaging (the so-called blister pack). You can discard the entire

blister pack in the can for nonrecyclable waste. • When disposing of objects with points or sharp edges (glass ampoules, syringes, etc.) you should use a non-penetrable box with a screw cap and put the box in the black can. • If you are unsure whether a certain medicine can be considered nonrecyclable waste, you always have the option to take it to the ZAK recycling center or the hazardous waste truck. While pharmacies are not obliged to take back unused or expired drugs, some offer this customer service on a voluntary basis. (e.g. Ramstein pharmacy) Avoid drug residues It is vital to act responsibly when handling medicinal products. Please check your supplies for medicines that are still usable before buying new products. In this way, you can avoid medical waste before it occurs.

Attention! Never flush medicine (whether liquid or solid) down the toilet or drain!

Blood donors save lives at LRMC by Army Staff Sgt. Douglas Aroca Acting Blood Donor Recruiter Without blood donors, there would be no blood products for people wounded in combat, fighting cancer, born prematurely or millions of other patients around the world. “The only thing more important than blood products are the blood donors themselves,” said Lt. Col. Christopher Evans, Director of Joint Blood Operations at the Armed Services Blood Bank Center-Europe in Landstuhl. “Because blood products cannot be synthetically manufactured, blood drives are the only way of collecting the blood products people need.” Blood products include red blood cells, platelets, plasma and whole blood. “Most donors have no idea where their donations go or who they helped,” said Evans. After the Blood Donor Center held a blood drive in Wiesbaden, Germany Nov. 20, 2018, the BDC team reached out to three donors to help them understand why their donations were so important. Bruce Holt, Chief Warrant Officer 2 Michael Murley and Spc. Anthony Colby learned that their blood helped trauma patients at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center. The donors were surprised that they received any sort of notification of the use of their blood donation. The BCD team plans to continue contacting more donors in the future on a random basis. “Getting a call was pretty confusing,” said Colby, a paralegal with the 66th

Military Intelligence Brigade. “I wasn’t expecting a phone call, but it’s cool.” Colby said that he donates because it helps the military as a whole and because his friends and coworkers either cannot or refuse to donate. Unfortunately, the reluctance to donate has become a trend, Evans said. During National Blood Donor Month this January, Evans and the BDC team is thanking donors for their lifesaving contributions and encouraging others to roll up a sleeve and donate. According to the American Red Cross, only 38 percent of the population is eligible to donate blood, and of that small group, only 10 percent actually donate. “The reasons for this vary from fear of the process to bad experiences to feelings of indifference, as if their donations don’t really matter,” Evans said. For Holt, a civilian contractor for U.S. Army Europe, a little advice for potential donors can go a long way. “People at these blood drives know what they’re doing,” Holt said. “Instead of fearing the process, pray for the person that might receive the blood.” He added that the incentives are nice, like t-shirts and glass mugs, but there is no need for it. “Donating should be enough of a motivation for all, especially with how much of a difference it makes in surgeries and other life-saving procedures,” said Holt. Evans emphasized that blood donors are the “single most crucial need in the medical field. Whether a person has

donated blood one time or a hundred times, without them, there are no lifesaving measures that can be performed.” The Armed Services Blood Program collects from the military community, for the military community. Since 1962, the ASBP has been the sole producer of blood and blood products in the U.S. military. For Murley, a warrant officer on the USAREUR intelligence staff, his motivation comes from his connection to the military community and knowing how easily blood can run out in hospitals, battalions, and aid stations. It is also the reason why he co-sponsors blood drives. “It’s just not a friendly thought to have,” said Murley. “We are a small piece of the bigger picture, even though one wouldn’t think that donating would do that much.” As the only Blood Donor Center located in Europe, the Armed Services Blood Bank Center-Europe keeps Landstuhl Regional Medical Center fully stocked with blood products for patients and also supports forward surgery teams in combat environments; combat theater hospitals; care during theater transfers; U.S. Navy ships; force service support groups; and allied and coalition hospitals throughout all of U.S. European Command and U.S. Africa Command.

About the Armed Services Blood Program As a tri-service organization, the ASBP collects, processes, stores and distributes blood and blood products to Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, Marines and their families worldwide. As one of four national blood collection organizations trusted to ensure the nation has a safe, potent blood supply, the ASBP works closely with our civilian counterparts by sharing donors on military installations where there are no military blood collection centers and by sharing blood products in times of need to maximize availability of this national treasure. A place to call home: Baumholder opens new townhomes Story by Mary Davis U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz The old proverb – “home is where the heart is” – will mean a lot more to 32 families this year as they move into their new government-owned townhomes on Smith Barracks, Baumholder. “There were a total of 84 homes being built – 32 are completed and mostly filled,” said Harald Kastner, U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz Baumholder Housing chief. The remaining 52 townhomes should be available for occupancy this spring/summer and include 34 for senior NCOs (sergeant first class to command sergeant major), 10 for company grade officers (second lieutenant to captain and warrant officers 1 and 2) and eight for field grade officers (major to colonel and chief warrant officers 3 and 4). The new standard housing designs range in size from 1,270 to 1,660 square feet for junior enlisted and 1,485 to 1,780 square feet for senior enlisted and other residents with three- and four-bedroom configurations available. “This is great news for Baumholder and USAG Rheinland-Pfalz,” said Ann McDaniels, USAG RP Baumholder Housing Customer Service chief. “Our families deserve the best, and it is nice to be able to move at least a few families into these new homes. Many more projects are scheduled for Baumholder, and this is great news for the future population of our garrison.” The Mayor of the City of Baum holder Günther Jung, several German

media outlets, as well as German Bundeswehr representatives from the Baumholder Military Training Area and Idar-Oberstein Artillery School received a first-hand look of a new townhome, Jan. 17. The City of Baumholder further strengthened its bond with the

Baumholder Military Community when it opened a new museum in September 2018 dedicated to GermanAmerican friendship. USAG RP continues to foster a relationship built on trust, friendship and transparency with the city, which was apparent at the event.

“This is a good opportunity to see the specific investment we’ve made in this community and share that with the community, so people will have a very specific idea of what we are doing here to build up Baumholder,” said USAG RP Commander Col. Jason T. Edwards. “Baumholder is a very special community, and as a commander, I have made an effort to take care of this important community since my arrival July 11.” Historically, Baumholder was slated for possible closure for several years, and therefore, funding for modernization of housing stopped. Baumholder became enduring in 2015 and money was allocated to modernize some buildings to include new builds on Smith Barracks and Wetzel Family Housing Area. Land clearing for the townhouse project began in 2015, which demolished several older buildings. Afterward, construction began on the homes in March 2016, until their completion last year. “Currently, the garrison has approximately $100 million planned projects through fiscal 2023,” the housing chief said. “Right-sizing renovations will provide new, larger apartments with dedicated laundry rooms, second bathrooms and more space. When buildings are right-sized, the current number of apartments per building is lowered, but space per unit is increased.” No future renovations, to include right-sizing, will incorporate twobedroom apartments, Kastner said. Additionally, playgrounds are included in the planning phase of all new projects. In fact, one playground was recently added with the completion of the new townhomes. Tell us what you think Baumholder – Participate in the Army Family Housing Survey! Residents have a chance to rate the quality of housing and housing services by taking part in the second annual Army Family Housing Survey now until Feb. 14. The survey’s purpose is to receive firsthand accounts of what Soldiers and families find important when living in Army-owned, on-post and leased family housing. The housing survey is used to identify areas in housing operations that are successful or need improvement, where funding could have the most effect and are identified as top priorities to residents, and ascertain areas of success for the garrison housing office. Take a moment and tell us what you think by participating in the Army Family Housing survey today! The survey is distributed by a private contractor via email from armyhousingsurvey@celassociates.com. All results are anonymous unless the resident asks to be notified.

Devil Dogs with halos deliver donated toys by Stacy M. Sanning Regional Health Command Europe The service members so feared they answer to the nickname Devil Dogs put a spit shine on their hearts of gold each year by collecting and delivering toys to local children. The U.S. Marines assigned to Wounded Warrior Battalion East at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center, with help from the community, Army and Air Force units, and the Ramstein Officers Spouses’ Club, collected nearly 2000 toys during their annual Toys for Tots drive at various locations in the Kaiserslautern Military Community. They more than doubled the number of toys collected in 2016, and 200 more than in 2017. “The Toys for Tots drive was a huge success this year,” said Sgt. Merrick Morin, a squad leader assigned to the Wounded Warrior Battalion East at LRMC and the lead for the toy drive

The Marines distributed the toys to German and refugee families though the German Red Cross in Landstuhl and a refugee center in Kusel. They also supported military families throughout the KMC at a holiday event for wounded warriors and at the Landstuhl Regional Medical Center Chaplain’s Christmas Extravaganza. “As a part of our overall Christmas Eve celebration, it was a blessing to be able to give toys to so many ser-

vice member families,” said Chaplain Des Nelson, an Army major with the 7221 Medical Support Unit currently assigned to LRMC. “Many of these families have experienced multiple deployments or have family members already down range.” Morin and his fellow Marines made their final delivery Jan. 9 to young refugees in Kusel. “The kids were overjoyed when they saw the books and toys for all ages,” said Morin.

Retiree casualty assistance checklist eases burden for survivors by Tom Clements U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz When losing a loved one who was also a retiree, the loss can be even more painful if not prepared to handle the accounts and benefits left behind. But the task can be manageable thanks to a thorough checklist made available by U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz Casualty Affairs and Retirement Service Offices in Baumholder and Kaiserslautern, and the 86th Airlift Wing Retiree Activities Office at Ramstein Air Base.

Luis de Andrade, director of the 86th RAO also hosts a quarterly workshop entitled “What a Surviving Spouse or Family Member Needs to Know” on Ramstein in the USAFE/AFRICOM Conference Center. “This workshop provides lots of good information on preparations with counselors available to discuss family needs or issues,” de Andrade said. “One of the most important parts of preparation is locating the necessary paperwork to file for benefits,” said Finnie Richardson, garrison casualty affairs and retirement officer. “Any retiree can greatly help his

or her loved ones by completing this checklist,” said Col. Jason Edwards, USAG RP commander. “That way, when the inevitable happens, your loved ones can move forward efficiently and effectively thanks to your detailed preparation. I consider this a readiness issue for our Army Family. Efforts need to be made to plan for all contingencies no matter what stage in life you are in.” The eight-page checklist covers everything from death notification procedures, information data sheets, pay and Social Security data, things to do with other benefits and a list of agencies that can help.

“The checklist is localized for this footprint, including contact information for offices at Ramstein, Kaiserslautern and Baumholder,” Edwards added. “I highly encourage all to complete this information for the benefit of our families.” For more information on the checklist, contact Richardson at finnie.l.richardson.civ@mail.mil, or call DSN 541-1021; Daniel Washington (Baumholder) at daniel.j.washington13.civ@mail. mil, DSN 531-2428; or de Andrade (Ramstein) at luis.deandrade@us.af. mil, DSN 480-5486.

Ramstein, Kaiserslautern win all contests against Lakenheath, Baumholder by Robert Baldwin contributing writer It was a perfect 8-0 weekend for the Ramstein and Kaiserslautern boys and girls basketball teams as they hosted Baumholder and Lakenheath on Friday night and Saturday morning. Kaiserslautern’s girls defeated Lakenheath 37-17 and Baumholder 35-16 to remain undefeated. Ramstein’s girls held the opponents to a combined 23 points in beating Lakenheath 50-16 and Baumholder 47-7. Kaiserslautern’s boys defeated Lakenheath 62-59 in a thriller and Baumholder 53-14. The unbeaten Ramstein’s boys defeated Baumholder 80-56 in an exciting game that was much closer than indicated by the final score and then defeated Lakenheath. For Baumholder, it was an eye opener. A Division Three team, the Buccaneers, by the geographical luck of the draw, are facing several Division One teams this winter. They compete well with schools of equal size, but stepping up to play the two largest schools in the league proved to be a huge challenge. But, because they love to compete and see what their players can do against top competition, the Baumholder coaches love playing the bigger schools. On Friday, Baumholder’s boys got the opening tip, but immediately turned it over, and it could have been an omen of what was in store. But nobody told the Buccaneers boys that

that was how the script should have gone. Led by all Europe sophomore Chandler Pigge, the Bucs went toe to toe with Ramstein and led 20-18 at the end of the quarter, paced by Pigge’s seven points and Isiah Daep’s pair of three pointers. In fact, for twelve minutes, the Buccaneers were the better team, causing Ramstein Coach Andy O’Connor to bench the starters for a while to light a fuse and inject a little spark under his experienced team. He was concerned that the Royals gave up 20 points in the first quarter. Pigge was phenomenal. He lit up the gym. His statistics were stellar – 33 points and double figures in rebounds and assists. But it was the way he did his job that was mesmeriz-

ing. Ramstein’s defense was an aggressive, on-the-ball zone that spread the court. Pigge, who touched the ball on nearly every Baumholder possession, would often snag the defensive rebound, bolt up the court, his eyes up and searching, while the Ramstein defense had to sprint back and try to stop his progress. Armed with an explosive first step, an ankle breaking crossover, handling the ball like it was on a string, and extraordinary court vision for a 15 year old, the lefthander either threw a crisp pass to his teammates, who often times were surprised by the arrival of the ball, or blasted his way to the basket for the score. If he missed, he kept after it until it went in. He was relentless. Ramstein had no answer for him. The Royals picked up the pace in the second quarter, became more aggressive and disciplined offensively, went after Baumholder on the inside and started hitting some of their outside jumpers. Led by gritty point guard Jerrod Little taking charge of the offense and Jason Jones hard work and grit on the offensive boards, playing his first game of the season following an injury, the Royals took advantage of a four minute Buccaneer scoreless spell and gradually increased the lead to 37-30 at the half. In the the third quarter the Royals finally took control of the game. Defensively, Ramstein forced five straight turnovers to start the half. A Royal layup, a three pointer by senior Gabe Fraley and back to back follow up baskets and free throws by Jones made it 46-30 before Baumholder could score again. Pigge scored eight straight later in the half to cut it to seven, but Fraley, who will be playing his college basketball in the state of Maine, Jones and Little, who got to the basket at will in the second

half, made clutch baskets to seal it for the Royals. The last six minutes were all Ramstein as they finished the game with the 80-56 final score. Little finished with 20 and Jones 18. Stephen Christmas added nine for Baumholder. On Saturday, Baumholder took on Kaiserslautern, the second largest school in the league. The Raiders started aggressively on offense, took the ball directly to Pigge in the key, and either pounded the lay up or passed to a wing resulting in two straight threes from junior Isaak Pacheco. 6’4 junior Tre Dotson stole a pass at half court and threw down a monster slam dunk. Defensively they packed the lane with a 2-3 defense and paid particular attention to Pigge. He was forced to give up the ball, unable to get into a consistent flow and the Raiders kept him off the offensive glass. Pigge got into quick foul trouble and picked up his fifth at the two minute mark of the second period. From then on, it was like someone let the air out of the gym and the whole mood changed. Kaiserslautern did whatever they wanted to do and Baumholder had to fend off the onslaught without their leader. Without Pigge, the Raiders stayed in their tight 3-2 zone defense, sealing off the lane and contested the Buccaneers’ outside shots, which were not falling. The Buccaneers were held to three points in the second half and the final was 53-14. Pigge’s excellence is no secret to the league’s coaches. Coach Corey Sullivan knew he had to focus on ways to stop him. “On Saturday I certainly wasn’t going to let Pigge get into the key. He’s so good. It is easier to say than do. Our kids executed the plan from the tip which made the difference,” he said. But on the flip side, the coaches also know about Kaiserslautern point guard Ervin Johnson and have to prepare for what he can do. The league has an abundance of excellent point guards and Johnson is among the best. He gives the Raiders what they need, be it scoring, defense, passing or, in the case of the game with Baumholder, leadership. “Coach tells me to be a leader,” he said. “He wants me to be disciplined and show some intensity. I use my speed to my advantage. Against Baumholder I saw the openings and I took them.” Johnson set the pace, got them to run when needed and slowed them down when necessary. It all starts with him. It was his steady hand that proved to be the edge against

Kaiserslautern American

January 25, 2019 Lakenheath as he hit a three pointer and a lay up late in the game to secure the three point victory. But the opponents know they cannot focus on just Johnson. Each night it is someone else who steps up to lead. On Friday against Lakenheath, it was reserve Brandon Morris that was the spark to hold off the Lakenheath charge. “Brandon Morris played really well I thought,” Sullivan said. “We

got down early and he came off the bench and really sparked us. He hit a three and attacked the basket well. He raised our level of play overall.” Lakenheath came into the game without a league victory. Sullivan said he and the Raiders were not as prepared for them as they should have been. “They did surprise us. I’ll take the blame for that. They have an excellent post player (Daniel Oleman). I was

told he had moved to the wing so we didn’t do enough prep for him inside during the week. Sometimes you have to go by what you know, sometimes you have go by what other coaches tell you. You can’t go to England to scout so you have to trust people. I didn’t trust what I knew enough,” Sullivan said. Oleman scorched the Raiders with 21 points, most of the points coming off of nifty post moves. But he does trust his team and relied on its ability and resiliency to stem the tide when things were not going their way. “It was a very close game. Both teams got up big and had their chances to knock the other out. For us the difference is when we started to actually play together defensively and followed our schemes. We came out after half and really clamped down as a team defensively,” Sullivan said. In Friday’s girls games, Ramstein defeated Baumholder 47-7, holding the Bucs to just one field goal. With just seven girls on the team, Baumholder started out at a disadvantage. But in spite of being outmanned and playing against teams with much more experience, they played hard throughout and carried themselves in a mature fashion. If they were frustrated, they did not show it.

Page 15 “Playing these bigger teams is an advantage for us,” said Coach Philip Loyd. “We do well against teams our size. I would be surprised if we do not make at least the semifinals this year.” Ramstein was led by Alexis Tri with 24 points. On Saturday, Baumholder shot better but fell 37-17 to undefeated Kaiserslautern. The Raiders were led by La’Jhanique Brown with 14 points. She also dominated on the boards. Rebecca Moon had five points, including a three pointer in the fourth quarter. The Raiders played much of the game without one of the league’s outstanding players, guard Emanjanae Hawkins. Hawkins rolled her ankle during pregame warm ups. She played a few minutes in the second quarter but did not score. On Friday, the Raider girls turned the screws on Lakenheath to come back to win 37-17 after trailing after eight minutes. Brown again was the leading scorer with 15. Tonight and tomorrow, Kaiserslautern takes the bus to SHAPE while Ramstein goes to Stuttgart. Baumholder plays its third straight large school opponent with a trip to Lakenheath.

The decluttering of one cupboard, one room or, even better, your entire home will start a domino effect of good things. Remember how amazing you feel after a thoroughly good clean of your home? On a soul level, decluttering: • Creates an environment of peace and tranquillity, which in turn helps create a mind of clarity, peace and tranquillity. They say your home is a direct reflection of your mind; I believe this works the other way round too and that your mind is a direct reflection of your home. • Motivates the desire to self-care by creating a relaxing and calm environment, making you more inclined to relax and meditate for example. • Helps you move forward and cuts the ties of your past. Maybe you still have belongings from an ex boyfriend or girlfriend. By removing these items from your home you’re clearly signifying to yourself and to the universe that it’s time maybe not to forget but to move on. • Generates feelings of gratitude and love by remembering your past. Decluttering can stimulate the fantastic memories you’ve maybe forgotten, appreciate the experiences

• •

you’ve had and the people you’ve spent time with. It can make you pick up an old hobby or connect with an old friend, for example. Reduces stress by making your belongings easy to find. It will save you time also. Removes the feeling of guilt caused by the need to declutter, because it’s done!

Positively affects other areas of your life by providing the catalyst for change. You’ve had the courage to declutter and cleanse your home, what’s next for you? Makes you feel good. Decluttering not only brings a sense of achievement, it’s also seriously good exercise — a vigorous declutter can burn over 500 kcal — causing the secretion of feel-good endorphins to your brain and nervous system.

The hard part of decluttering is the starting. Once you begin the process, the results will quickly speak for themselves and give you all the motivation you need to complete your whole house. This article first appeared on Prosperity Kitchen.

THE GREATEST BRITAIN ROAD TRIP, PART 1: BRUGES, DOVER AND STONEHENGE

Story and photos by Leonie Milde MilitaryInGermany.com

In the Summer of 2018, I felt I had seen and written enough (for now) about Germany and the United States and decided it was time for something new. So I packed up a little Mini Countryman and embarked on what I would call the GREATest BRITAIN road trip. A terrible pun for a life-changing experience. Over the course of 3 months and almost 11,000 kilometres, I ate way more beans on toast than any nutritionist would advise you to, climbed way less mountains than I had anticipated, understood way less than someone fluent in English would expect from an English-speaking nation and fell umbrella over rain boots in love with

City of Bruges in Belgium.

the people, the culture and, most importantly, the landscape of this magnificent island(s). But isn’t the UK just loud pubs, rain, and vinegary food? Nope! I will recap my adventure and introduce you to destinations that might not have been on your radar yet but absolutely should be. (The following travel tips do not require dropping everything for 3 whole months, each destination can be explored separately in a week or less.) PART 1: Bruges, Dover and Stonehenge Thanks to my love, Ryanair, I have been to the UK about 30 times in the last four years with no intention of stopping anytime soon. There’s just something about the charming stone cottages, dreamy meadows, blissful flock of sheep and that accent that excite me every time I come back.I didn’t realize the UK had such a bad reputation until I began telling people about my plans and faced responses such as ‘but it’s cold and grey,’ ‘but what is there to see’, ‘all they eat is Fish and Chips’ and ‘why England?’ Oddly enough, these comments did

the opposite of discouraging me and I was even more determined to prove people wrong. And oh my did I prove them wrong. People were also shocked when I told them I would be driving up there in my own car, which had me worrying whether I was making a mistake, too, but it turned out to be quite reassuring to at least be sitting on the familiar side of the car even if it meant inventing some new gymnastics tricks to get into parking garages, not even attempting going through drive throughs and having to be extra careful when it came to changing lanes on the highway. Sorry, motorway. Driving on the left turned out to be doable as well given that the streets are designed to accommodate left-handed traffic only and chances are there will be other cars leading the way. The ferry port in Calais is merely 5.5 hours from the KMC. Bruges My first stop was Bruges, Belgium. I like chocolate, beer and pretty houses so this was a perfect first stop. Bonus: it’s only an hour from the ferry terminal in Calais and almost no detour at all so it was ideal for a scenic layover and made sure I wasn’t already tired getting on the ferry since I was plenty nervous about driving on the other side of the road. Bruges is well known for its beautiful architecture, beer and overall ro-

mantic and calm atmosphere. It had been on my bucket list for years and I’m happy to say that it did not disappoint. I walked along the canals, went into one Chocolaterie after the other and admired the colorful architecture while stuffing my face with fries, frites, and waffles, gauffres. It also happened to be the day of the world cup finale, which meant the streets were quite empty as everyone was packed into sports bars and cafés to watch the game. The cobble stoned alleys and smooth water along with the sound of horseshoes and carriages made me forget all about the anxieties of the months of preparation and sent me on that ferry perfectly calm and at peace with the knowledge that it would be a while until I got back to my old, familiar routine back home. Getting There: Bruges is a circa 4-hour-drive from the KMC. Dover Seeing Dover is pretty much inevitable as the majestical cliffs greet every visitor arriving via ferry and it is simply impossible to resists seeing them up close. There is a parking lot next to the visitor center, which is an excellent place to eat and perhaps grab your first souvenir. The walk along the cliffs appears to be endless and since I’ve never followed it all the way, I can’t say for a fact that it isn’t. About an hour in, you will get to the famous lighthouse, which is open for

Dover Castle.

visitors, but even if you only have half an hour to spare, it’s worth going up there and looking out over the ocean. Legend has it that on a clear day, you can look all the way to France but it is England after all, so maybe don’t hold your breath for that one. Either way, the view is magnificent and I can’t think of a more stunning natural wonder to be welcomed by. Dover Castle Dover Castle was the first of many, many castles I would visit on the trip and set the bar pretty high for those to follow. It is incredibly well-kept and an absolute attraction for visitors of all ages. The inner tower, a medieval palace, consists of furnished rooms, real fires and costumized guards to tell you more about the history and life on the estate. The outer wall, which became an official military headquarter in WWII, offers fantastic views over

the ocean, the city and fields as well as a gripping history. You will also find the oldest surviving lighthouse of the country, one of the oldest in the world, and many medieval tunnels on the site. There is also a multi-media exhibition, an underground military hospital and much more so one can easily spend half a day or more exploring the whole site. Opening hours: Before April 1, the castle is only open on Saturdays and Sundays, after that it is open every day. Admission costs: £20 per adult unless you look like a 15-year-old, which I do, apparently, in which case it’s only £12. Stonehenge Being in my 6th semester of studying English literature and history, I couldn’t be so close to Stonehenge and not take the detour. By this time, I was joined by a friend and we excitedly parked at the visitor center only to find out that admission costs €20, which we decided we were not willing to pay for a bunch of stones. Luckily, we found out that the walk to the stones (about 20 minutes over green fields with baby cows, so no complaining on our side) is free and while one does not get to be up close as there is a separate fence for those without a ticket, we did get a pretty good view. Years ago, visitors were allowed to touch and even climb the stones but those times are long gone and the preservation of the site is a priority.

There are also sample houses at the visitor center where you can see how the people that threw these infamous parties around the stones lived. To this day, every year on March 31, hundreds of people gather in the very spot where they once feasted and dance all night long. A beautiful walk featuring baby cows and sunshine accompanies the world heritage site. The Site Early signs of activities in the area are estimated at more than 5000 years ago. The stones, that travelled 240km to Wiltshire from South Wales for no known reason, are believed to have been set up in the late Neolithic period about 2500BC; in the early Bronze Age many burial mounds were built nearby. It consists of more than 700 known archaeological features including over over 180 scheduled monuments – henges, timber structures, enclosures and many burial mounds. There are countless legends surrounding the site as no one knows for certain why, or even exactly how, the stones were set up. One of the more amusing myths is that the rocks were once giants dancing in a circle who suddenly turned into stones, hence the circular formation. Archaeologists found animal skeletons in such large amounts that they are certain the site was accompanied by large

feasts. So even if you’re not into history per se, the myths that this site provoked are worth the visit! Even nowadays, each year for the summer solstice, thousands of visitors gather around the stones to watch the sun set right between two stones as their ancestors are believed to have done thousands of years ago. If you want to see the exhibition and learn more about the history of the site, which is ultimately a big mystery, though quite fascinating, you either need to get a ticket after all or pick up a book in the gift shop. Getting There: if you’re not driving, the closest airport is Bristol. There are Ryanair flights from Cologne from €10 each way. If you are driving, it’s just under 3 hours from Dover and takes you through the “Surrey Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty,” so it’s quite a nice trip! Tune in next week for the next part.
