pproximately 10 Airmen and equipment from the 86th Airlift Wing, 435th Air Ground Operations Wing and other units from Ramstein went to Royal Air Force Lakenheath to provide assistance after an HH-60G Pave Hawk helicopter crash took the lives of four Airmen from the 56th Rescue Squadron Jan. 7. Ramstein provided support within hours of the accident to assist with recovery operations and the ensuing investigation, help their grieving wingmen, and pay the proper honor and respect to Pave Hawk crewmembers Capt. Christopher Stover, Capt. Sean Ruane, Tech. Sgt. Dale Mathews and Staff Sgt. Afton Ponce. “Our fellow wingmen at the 56th RQS dedicate their lives to saving others, and the death of these Airmen is a tragedy for the command and the Air Force,” said Brig. Gen. Patrick X. The center’s mission is to conduct all financial services required to support U.S. Central Command, including Soldier pay inquiries, financing purchases and contracts for deployed units, and conducting accounting operations, said Lt. Mentoring Works: investing in tomorrow’s future by Col. Kevin Poitinger 86th Aeromedical Evacuation Squadron commander
Success is rarely by accident; each successful person can normally attribute their achievements to a leader who had a significant impact on their career and life. This January marks the 13th anniversary of National Mentoring Month, and it is appropriately themed “Mentoring Works!” National Mentoring Month was established in January 2002 by the Harvard mentoring project, MENTOR, and the Corporation for National Community Service. January was first endorsed as NMM by President George W. Bush and later by both chambers of the U.S. Congress. This monthlong campaign promotes youth mentoring in the U.S., and leading nonprofit organizations, big businesses and numerous governors and mayors take part. The message for NMM 2014 is clear. Quality mentoring programs are a proven investment leading to positive outcomes for our young people. These programs build self-esteem and confidence; they instill positive behavior and help our youth to reach their maximum potential. Additionally,
we need to go out and be someone who matters to someone who matters. Pay it forward; just one hour per week has a profound impact on the mentor and the mentee. Mentoring allows us to step out of our comfort zone and can help in understanding different cultures and generations within our community. Lastly, mentoring strengthens and unites communities. The investment made on developing our young people will show exponential returns on our youth and our community’s future successes. Studies by MENTOR show there are 15 million young people who need a caring adult as a mentor in their lives. Retired Gen. Colin L. Powell is a spokesman for the NMM campaign and recently made a public service announcement stating, “As a nation, we need to invest in our young people, let them know they are full of potential and help them to succeed … and mentoring can do that. Mentors can help young people build confidence and give them hope for the future. You can help by volunteering as a mentor to a young person in your community.” It’s simple really; a mentor can do small things to have huge impacts on a young person. You can help them plan a project for school or set career goals so they can start taking steps to realize them.
You can guide them through making healthy choices about day-to-day life, from food to exercise and beyond. You can aid them in thinking through a problem at home or at school, providing decisionmaking tools. I’ve found some great places to start the journey to becoming a mentor to our youth. I encourage you to look into the needs of your community and the youth in your area. We as Airmen, Soldiers, Sailors and Marines have invaluable leadership to share. Our collective strength through multitudes of adversity could benefit many of the 15 million youth who need mentors. Please use your strengths to benefit your communities and the next generation of leaders. Redefining self — victim to survivor COMMENTARY
Editor’s Note: The author of this commentary is being kept anonymous due to privacy concerns. Trust is a valuable asset in our Air Force. To me, it is the cornerstone to our core values. Throughout our military education we are taught to trust our fellow Airmen. We build a foundation around that trust. Several years ago, my trust was taken away when I was sexually assaulted by a fellow Airman. My friends and I decided to celebrate another successful school year by attending a party with some of our classmates. When we arrived, I saw a few students at the party who were a year ahead of us, but everyone recognized each other. I didn’t think much of it. I didn’t realize that night would dramatically change my life. How

could I have known that night I would be held against my will and assaulted? When it was time to leave, I remember hearing my friend call my name as I lay on the cold, bathroom floor. The pungent smell of pine-scented cleaner burned my nostrils as I tried to peel myself off the tile. I had always associated sexual assault with “stranger danger.” Never did I think it could happen to me. I never imagined it would be someone I knew or someone I trusted. Unsure of what had just happened, I refused to let myself believe I had been raped. Slowly, I pulled away from those I loved. I didn’t know who I could trust. Denial became easier than facing the problem.

The next semester, the attacker attended some of the same classes I did. He would often sit close to me and act like we were friends. My grades began to suffer. I could not concentrate and became angry. I was angry at my friends for not knowing what I was going through and angry at myself for what had happened and not knowing what to do. Merely a shell of my former self, I no longer recognized my own reflection in the mirror. My relationships suffered, my grades plummeted and I bled from the unseen wounds as many victims of sexual assault do. At times I felt completely empty and void of any feeling. Other times I felt like I would burst with pain. There were moments when I would become overwhelmed with the feeling that there were a thou-

James Morris, 86th Airlift Wing command chief, visited the Central Regional Storage Facility site Jan. 14 in Sanem, Luxembourg, for an immersion tour. The immersion tour gave the command chiefs an opportunity to witness the CRSF site mission and capabilities first hand and to interact with the Airmen and personnel assigned to the unit. “Our mission, in a nutshell, is to store and maintain war reserve material, and then when called upon, deploy it out the door,” said Maj. Ryan Anderson, 86th Material Maintenance Squadron commander. “Eighty-five percent of USAFE WRM is stored and maintained by the 86th MMS.” The CRSF has the capability to store more than 500,000 square feet of equipment and assets. There are several controlled humidity warehouses and one temperature controlled warehouse. Some of the equipment stored in the warehouses include vehicles, generators and equipment RAF, from Page 1
Communications Squadron by routing personnel and approximately 13,000 pounds of communications and weather equipment to Lakenheath within 24 hours aboard a C-130J Super Hercules from the 37th Airlift Squadron. “Providing support to the Airmen of RAF Lakenheath isn’t an option. It’s a responsibility,”
required when setting up living quarters on a new base. The controlled environment allows for the equipment to be stored for an extended amount of time and not corrode, rust and become unserviceable. Having this capability saves the Department of Defense invaluable time, money and resources, which could be used to buy new equipment or make repairs — all important with today’s budget restraints. “Being here and learning about the CRSF is important for me. This is one of the locations in Europe that we get asked about,” Davis said. “This location is definitely of interest. Thank you all for what you are doing out here.” The tour included Davis and Morris visiting the CRSF site and receiving mission briefs in each section. They also had the opportunity to have lunch with enlisted Airmen assigned to Sanem and speak about their roles in the mission and what challenges they are facing in today’s Air Force. “Our motto in USAFE-AFAFRICA is ‘Forward, Ready, Now.’ The WRM arena in Luxembourg captures this sentiment” Davis said. “I am impressed.”

I did not realize how lost I had become until I overheard someone use the term “damaged.” Finally, a word that described the scars and pain I was experiencing. Damaged. It was a simple word that described me. At that moment, all of my pain, anguish and anger came flooding to the surface. All of those feelings filled my body while also numbing my soul, leaving a dark emptiness. A friend of mine knew something had not been right for many months and kept reaching out to let me know he was there. I kept pushing him away until finally I broke down and told him I needed someone to talk to. He walked beside me to the Sexual Assault Response Coordinator office and waited outside until I was ready to go back home. Although I had pushed my friends away and isolated myself, this person stood by me when I needed someone the most. The SARC assigned me to a victim advocate to talk about different programs and to just stand by as support if I needed to talk. During a time when I lost my trust in people, talking to someone I had never met before regarding something so personal felt strange, but refreshing. I could focus on stepping up to get the help I needed and refocus on the important things in my life. Yoga, life skills and other programs helped me identify who I am and who I had lost. The pain began to ease and the darkness began to fade as I slowly began to find my voice. The person before the attack was gone. In her place now stood a new, stronger person. I had redefined myself from victim to survivor. Throughout the journey as a survivor, I face many setbacks from the smell of certain colognes to how someone reaches out to touch my shoulder. No matter how many setbacks I have, each day is a new step forward on that journey. As an Air Force officer I’ve had many opportunities and an incredible career traveling across the world. My wonderful husband and I plan on having a family and lifting up those around us. From the darkest moments of life, I’ve found a shimmer of hope. The trust that was once broken has been rebuilt. My relationships are now stronger as I have found solace in forgiving. I became a victim advocate to help others rediscover their strength and have been able to share my story with many people. Those who are still lost as sexual assault victims need to know they are not alone. We need to help others take that step forward as a survivor. If not for my friend who stepped in to rescue me from desolation and the downward spiral I was caught in, this would be a different story today.

Dental health
February is National Children’s Dental Health Month. The Ramstein Dental Clinic will have a booth in the Kaiserslautern Military Community Center food court from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Feb. 1. The clinic will remind parents that they need to set a good example by taking care of their children’s teeth and assist them with brushing at least twice a day. Parents should help with healthy eating habits and regular checkups. The dental clinic will also visit base schools in February to inform on mouth guards, which are an important part of protective face gear.

Road construction
Construction work for the installation of new driveways to the Ramstein Commissary parking lot will continue until Feb. 28. New driveway access to the commissary will be installed and

Better days to call
The Ramstein Clinic is asking patients to call on days other than Mondays, since Mondays are the highest call volume day for the clinic. On average, the clinic fields 40 percent more calls than on any other business day of the week, and on-hold times can exceed 30 minutes. By simply calling on a different day, whenever possible, the clinic will be able to assist in a much more timely fashion.

After The Battle: The golden hour Story and photos by Senior Airman Chris Willis 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Editor’s note: This is the first in a six-part series about medical response capabilities for deployed service members from start to finish and the various milestones for care and transportation of combatwounded troops in Afghanistan. BAGRAM AIRFIELD, Afghanistan ― “The Golden Hour� refers to the hour immediately following a serious injury and is the most critical period in the patient’s survival. The call comes in; there is a coalition forces member in need of immediate and serious medical care in the eastern mountains of Afghanistan. Within minutes, a small tactical recovery team, known as Guardian Angel, is on a helicopter heading toward its objective. For the members of Bagram’s 83rd Expeditionary Rescue Squadron Guardian Angel, this is exactly what they train for, and they are ready to execute. Their mission is to rescue, recover and return American or allied forces in times of danger or extreme duress. “We have less than an hour to get that patient under ‘bright lights and cold steel’ if they are going to live,� said Staff Sgt. George Reed, 83rd ERQS pararescueman, referring to that “golden hour� when a patient has no other option than immediate surgery. “Any environment, anytime, anywhere we will execute a rescue mission or patient recovery,� Reed said. Maj. Joe Lopez described Guardian Angel as a U.S. Air Force weapons system comprising three career fields:
the CRO (combat rescue officer), the PJ (pararescuemen) and SERE (survival, evasion, resistance, escape). This combined weapons system can execute the five phases of personnel recovery: report, locate, support, recovery and reintegrate. Recovering patients in Afghanistan requires not just combat medical training but increased situational awareness in case of enemy activity. “Our team is highly trained on ground tactics,� said Lopez, 83rd ERQS combat rescue officer. “In many cases, we have to provide our own security in a hostile location while we prepare the patient for transport.� One of the distinct capabilities of the GA team is technical rescue where they utilize extrication equipment to remove warfighters or civilians trapped in wreckage or collapsed structures in almost any terrain or environment. The situation can vary from a high altitude crash to a mass casualty incident to a packaged patient ready for evacuation. “The idea is to get in and out as fast as possible without exposing the patient to additional threats,� Lopez said. “The longer we are on the ground, the longer we are vulnerable to attack and can decrease the patient’s chance of survival.� While in flight, the pararescuemen perform trauma medicine to stabilize the patient in order to bring them safely to a higher level of care. The actions of these battlefield Airmen of the Bagram 83rd ERQS Guardian Angel prove their dedication and commitment to saving lives and staying true to their motto: “These Things We Do ... That Others May Live ... To Return With Honor.�

Crash your ride, don’t run, hide by Senior Airman Hailey Haux 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Being able to get into a car and go wherever you want is a privilege — a privilege that can be taken away if you don’t follow a few simple rules and regulations. Recently, there has been an increase in “fleeing the scene” incidents, which are illegal and can result in a loss of license. Fleeing the scene can be anything from hitting a car in the parking lot to accidents with minimal or no damage and driving away. “Per instruction, it is mandated by the wing com-
mander to make contact with security forces if you are in an accident involving another vehicle or even a single vehicle accident,” said Master Sgt. Jonathan Mehringer, 86th Security Forces Squadron B-flight flight chief. “It’s also a requirement by law to report it.” According to wing supplement to Air Force Instruction 39-201 5.3.1., fleeing the scene of an accident (i.e. failing to attempt to make contact with the vehicle owner or contacting security forces prior to leaving the scene of an accident) will result in a traffic ticket, which carries a minimum of a six-month suspension of driving privileges. For non-military members, they will
be subject to the German law and can face a fine starting at around €1,000. “The perpetrator must also pay the costs of the proceedings,” said Matthias Völker, 86th AW German legal adviser. “Additionally, they face a license suspension if the damage is more than a few hundred euros. If the damage is more than €1,300, the suspension can be more than six months.” To protect your driving privileges, if you hit something make sure to report it to either security forces or the German Polizei. The German number for 9-1-1 is 1-1-2, and they have English-speaking representatives to assist with emergencies.
Baumholder shooting club welcomes American members Story and photo by Bernd “Bernie Mai U.S. Army Garrison Baumholder Public Affairs Office “After quite some time, I am happy to welcome American guests at our clubhouse again,” said Lothar Werner, president of the Kleinkaliber Schützen Club (small caliber shooting club) Baumholder, during a visit by the German-American “Stammtisch” group at the clubhouse of the Baumholder shooting club. Werner informed the guests, three Germans and seven Americans from the “Stammtisch” group, about the Baumholder shooting club and its clubhouse. The guests were surprised when they heard the Baumholder shooting club, since its founding in 1955, has had three American “Kings of Marksmanship.” Impressed with the club structure and its present capabilities, the guests then tested their shooting abilities. At first, three members of the KKSC briefed the safety standards and explained the correct handling of the weapons. The guests then shot air rifles and air guns at the 10-meter range and the small caliber rifle at the
50-meter range. “It is great here, and I want to become a member of the club,” said Staff Sgt. April Tessmer, 16th Sustainment Brigade. Werner immediately presented her with an application for membership. Tessmer filled out the application that same evening and paid her fees. Michael Röhrig, one of the founders of the German-American “Stammtisch” and assistant city mayor, sees this as confirmation why the weekly “Stammtisch” exists. “We help our American friends to learn what Baumholder has to offer,” he said. Tessmer was not the only American who was interested in membership. Lt. Col. John Broomhead, 16th Sustainment Brigade executive officer, and his wife were also interested in becoming members. “This does not only provide me the opportunity to participate in the local shooting sport, it also offers the opportunity to learn more about Baumholder and its clubs and private organizations,” Broomhead said. The Baumholder shooting club hopes to welcome more Americans in the future.

They will also conduct inspections of financial centers in Afghanistan and focus on removing U.S. currency from the region, said Col. Thomas J. Seelig, the director of the 266th FMSC and native of Wilmington, Del. “We are the largest financial organization in the active-duty Army, and we are very well prepared for this mission,” Seelig said. “Our mission downrange will be very similar to the one we perform here at home station, and I am very confident in our Soldiers to accomplish this task.”

Old scars mended by a dream by Airman Larissa Greatwood 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs There are pivotal moments in a person’s life that lead them to where they are today. Some moments test peoples’ abilities, emotions and strengths to the extreme, making success all the more triumphant. The mature decisions Ebony Shannon, 86th Medical Group training instructor, had to make at a very young age have validated her strength. Shannon knew from the time she was a child what her future would hold. Unlike many children her age, she didn’t want to be a princess or pop star. Her greatest desire was to become a doctor. “When I was 4 years old, I used to sit in front of the television and watch every ‘ER,’” said Shannon, referring to the medical television show. “I was going to be a doctor. I realized I was so engrossed with this television show because I watched it as an escape from what I called my nightmare.” Shannon’s childhood was not ideal. When she was just an infant, her father gave her away to any family who would take her. Shannon said her father said, “You are needed, not loved. You are property, not desire. Since you’re property, I can give you away.” That is just what Shannon’s father did. It took her mother four days to find her because her father drove three counties away and gave her to a stranger. Shannon constantly felt worthless. It contributed to her self-doubt and lack of confidence. She knew she wanted to be somebody, but didn’t know if it could be done. “My first real boyfriend was the first man to ever show me love,” Shannon said. “He was the first person to ever look me in the eyes and tell me I’m beautiful, and I’m going to be somebody one day. So, like most teenagers, I made teenage decisions. I skipped love; I skipped marriage and went right to a baby carriage.” With the pregnancy, Shannon felt as though she was now a step further from her dream of becoming a doctor. She had to make a decision — her dreams or her child’s life. “I had this baby growing inside of me who deserved a fair chance,” Shannon said. “I had to decide if I was going to choose myself or this child. That day I decided my life is really not my own.” Shannon knew she had to do something in order for her and her son to survive. She knew there would be sacrifices to be made so her son would never have to feel the effects of being born to a teenage mother. “At 17, I joined the Air Force,” Shannon said. “I’ll never forget leaving for basic training. While I was sitting on the other side of security waiting for the shuttle, I heard my soon-to-be 2-year-old son saying, ‘Mommy come back.’ I remember thinking, how do I leave my child? As I boarded the shuttle, I knew this was the best thing for us.” When training felt too tough and lack of sleep seemed unbearable, Shannon kept her sights clear and emotions minimal. “I used to tell the girls in my flight our sports bras were our treasure chests because it was the only place the (military training instructors) couldn’t check,” she said. “So, I kept my son’s picture next to my heart. Whenever I felt like I couldn’t do it anymore (or) I was too tired, I would put my hand

on my heart and know why I was there.” Getting through basic training was a big accomplishment and gave her a new sense of pride and confidence. “I got to my first duty station and was proud,” Shannon said. “I was 19 years old, I had my baby, and I felt like I was proving everyone who had doubted me wrong. I was going to be somebody. The next pivotal moment happened in (technical) school. My instructors heard me talking and said, ‘Ebony, you’re so smart. If you have it in you, you can go to medical school while you’re in (technical) school. We’ll allow you to enroll into classes in the evenings.’ Everyone knows that doesn’t happen.” This first glimmer of hope showed Shannon that even though her dream of becoming a doctor would be difficult, it was still possible. Without hesitation, Shannon enrolled and quickly realized her schedule was very busy and extremely stressful. “Working 12-hour shifts and having to go to school at night at 19 years old cannot be done without a support system,” Shannon said. “I’ll never forget the day a young man, Robert Shannon, walked into my house with one of my friends. He would come around whenever I needed anything. I will be forever grateful for this man because he was my support system.” Her friend’s support would continue even after becoming her husband. He was especially supportive of her desire to become a doctor and knew she wasn’t doing what she really wanted at the moment. “He told me, ‘You know what, Ebony, you’re in the service, but I believe in you. It’s time for you to separate and focus on your education. It’s time for you to be that person we know you can be.’ So that’s what I did. I (joined the Palace Chase program).” Shannon focused on getting her education and would eventually end up at Ramstein with her husband. “I am thankful for my husband because I got my education,” she said. “I moved through my bache-
lor’s degree and two master’s degrees. I didn’t know where I was going to end up with all this education, but I ended up at the medical group.” Being a training instructor for the 86th MDG put her foot in the door and gave her the ability to observe and learn more about the medical field. She didn’t give up on her dream of becoming a doctor, and once again, there was someone who saw potential in her. “Maj. Jeffrey Schuler saw something in me I never did,” Shannon said. “He said to me, ‘There’s this program for you. If you have it in you, you should apply. It’s hard. You’ll probably kick me for making you do it, but I believe you can.’ Even though I didn’t make it the first year, he pushed me again to do it the second year.” If Shannon hadn’t tried again, it’s possible she would have missed her chance. She took advantage of her window of opportunity and finally reached her ultimate dream — a goal she had set at the age of 4. “My recruiter called me,” Shannon said. “He said to me, ‘Hello, Mrs. Ebony. Oh, I’m sorry. Hello, Lieutenant Shannon. Welcome back to the United States Air Force. You will be serving in the Medical Service Corps.’ Two days later, I got a call from my career adviser from school. He said to me, ‘Congratulations. Your Ph.D. has been approved. Welcome to the Ph.D. program.’ In one week, I received two lifetime goals. In one week, I figured out I could still be a doctor. My dream had come true.” From a traumatizing childhood to living out her greatest aspiration, Shannon is a true success story. She proves when obstacles stand in the way of your desires, you can conquer them and never let them keep you from your full potential. “I say to anybody who is going through anything, if you ever look up and see one door has closed, don’t give up,” she said. “There will always be a window open somewhere.”

Replace the short shorts, sparkling tank tops and leg warmers with PT gear and you have enthusiastic PTLs assisting Airmen on their road to a fantastic physique. Although workouts may not be as spirited and lively as the picturesque ’80s fat-burner aerobics, they both have the same goal for everyone to be fit and healthy. “PTLs serve three functions,” said Cesar Alvarez, 86th Aerospace Medicine Squadron exercise physiologist. “They perform mock PT tests for their units, lead squadron-approved fitness programs, and they can provide assistance in the Fitness Assessment Cell to provide official testing to the installation.” Before being appointed by their commander, future PTLs must maintain a passing score on their own physical training test and need to complete

have been completely satisfied and just overwhelmed with how well the Soldiers are doing,” said 1st Lt. Christopher Kletzien, the main customs building project OIC and native of Plymouth, Wisc. “They work hard every day and they put in their long hours without complaining.” The project comes as the primary responsible location for the transition of service menbers into and out of Afghanistan moves from the Transit Center at Manas Air Base, Kyrgyzstan to the M.K. Air Base Passenger Transit Center. “I feel the contributions we are making here will help make sure the transition of service members from Afghanistan goes as smoothly as it did in Manas,” said Pfc. Aliah Murray, carpentry and masonry specialist and native of Clinton, N.C. “Hopefully it makes things a lot easier,” said Sgt. Jason Whitaker, heavy construction equipment operator and native of Indianapolis. “It’s a bigger facility, it’s nicer and it’s newer, so it should make things a lot easier for the Soldiers.” Engineers involved in the project expressed their feelings on how the new facilities are being constructed with service members in mind, in order to help ensure a smooth transition from an operational area. “The facility is big enough so that they can process up to 300 people and the flow should be extremely simple for them,” Kletzien said. “It should help them with an easier transition from the deployment stage.”

“I think this area is going to speed the whole process up a lot quicker and get service members home faster,” said Sgt. John Emerson, interior electrician and native of Greenwood, Ark. Part of the ongoing success of the engineers’ mission is the steadfast dedication and willingness to learn from all of the junior engineers involved in the project. “A lot of the Soldiers out here are younger and were more than willing to come out here and learn,” Whitaker said. “There are three different (military occupational specialties) out here right now, and even if it wasn’t neces-
sarily their MOS, they were more than willing to come out here to learn by picking up a hammer, start swinging and banging in nails.” “All of the credit goes to the Soldiers,” Kletzien said. “It’s completely overwhelming at how much they can accomplish and how quick they can sync together and accomplish a task like this.” Once the engineers complete construction on the customs facilities, they’ll move on to build more support facilities designed to provide support to the service members leaving Afghanistan and heading home.

Chicken with spinach and gorgonzola cheese INGREDIENTS (FOR 4 SERVINGS): 300 grams egg noodles, uncooked 600 grams frozen, chopped spinach, thawed and drained 1 medium onion, diced 2 cloves garlic, minced 4 each chicken breasts, boned and skinned 2 tablespoons oil Salt, pepper, nutmeg and Fondor* to taste 1 package Hollandaise sauce mix 50 grams butter, sliced 75 grams gorgonzola cheese 1 tablespoon lemon juice DIRECTIONS: • Heat oven to 175 C or 350 F. Butter or spray a casserole or baking dish. • Boil the egg noodles in salted water for about 10 minutes. • Dice the onion and mince the garlic cloves. Drain the noodles and let cool. Drain the liquid from the spinach. • Rinse the chicken breasts and pat dry with a paper towel. • Heat a pan with the oil and brown the chicken breasts on both sides. Remove from the pan and season with salt and pepper,

Warm 200 milliliters of water and whisk in the Hollandaise sauce mix. Let the mixture come to a boil. Mix in the butter and the gorgonzola cheese. Stir until the cheese has melted. Season with pepper and lemon juice. Pour the sauce over the casserole. Bake for 10 to 15 minutes or until bubbly and heated through. • VARIATION: Instead of using egg noodles, you can use 600 grams of potatoes. Wash the potatoes and boil for about 20 minutes. Peel potatoes and let cool. Slice the potatoes into thick slices and lay them into your prepared baking dish. Continue as directed in recipe. • Fondor is a flavor enhancer and contains a large amount of MSG. • VARIATION: You can substitute the chicken breasts with either turkey or schnitzel if desired.

CE Ops Deputy exemplifies commitment, service by 1st Lt. Timothy Lorson 786th Civil Engineer Squadron On Jan. 18, 786th Civil Engineer Squadron Airmen said “Auf Wiedersehenâ€? to one of their most dedicated local national employees, Franz Pfaffenrath. With 47 years of service to the Air Force mission, Pfaffenrath is a living piece of U.S., NATO and European history, not to mention an expert on the more than 1,300 facilities and nearly 5,000 acres making up the KMC. Pfaffenrath was born and raised on his father’s potato farm in Sembach. He played soccer and was a sprinter on the track team before being drafted into the Bundeswehr (German army) in 1965. Soldat (Private) Pfaffenrath served as a “Panzeraufklärer,â€? or armored reconnaissance troop. After his time in the military, Pfaffenrath began working at Kleber Kaserne as an electronics mechanic for the Army and Air Force Exhange Service on Jan 23, 1967. In 1976, he graduated with his master’s in electromechanical engineering, earning his registration as an “Elektromechanikermeister,â€? which allowed him to teach, install, repair and certify electronic equipment and appliances. To this day, he maintains his professional registration and operates an appliance repair business in his hometown as a passion and hobby. After earning his degree, Pfaffenrath became the first German supervisor of the Einsiedlerhof Appliance Shop, which maintained and serviced more than 32,000 electric appliances. In 1987, he served as the housing maintenance superintendent until he accepted a position as the facility manager for Sembach Air Base in 1989. Over the next six years, Pfaffenrath oversaw the transfer of Sembach Air Base from an independent wing to a satellite of the 86th Airlift Wing. After re-aligning Sembach, Pfaffenrath joined Team Ramstein in 1995 under what was then the 86th Civil Engineer Squadron. In his tenure at Ramstein, Pfaffenrath has seen the squadron pendant change from the 86th CES to the 786th, then 735th, back to 86th, and finally landing on the 786th CES. While here, Pfaffenrath has witnessed the base transform from a Cold War fighter base to what is now one of the Department of Defense’s largest air transportation, logistics, and command and control hubs. He has been a key advocate for the base and has played a role in managing relationships with the local and

district governments in the Kaiserslautern area. Although Pfaffenrath has participated in numerous large projects, such as the construction of the $151 million Kaiserslautern Military Community Center, he says his greatest career accomplishment was the oversight of the construction and installation of Ramstein’s centralized distribution heating system in 1996. This system replaced a series of independent coal and gas-fired boilers into a centrally controlled line that delivers gas to heat exchangers in each individual facility. Through the years, Pfaffenrath has worked with thousands of Air Force active duty, civil service and host nation employees. He has seen first-term Airmen become chief master sergeants and lieutenants who returned to command the 786th CES as lieutenant colonels. In his tenure, Pfaffenrath has worked with more than 30 CE squadron commanders and chiefs, including the former Air Force civil engineer, retired Maj. Gen. L. Dean Fox, when he commanded the 66th CES at Sembach Air Base from 1986 to 1989. When asked about the difference between the Air Force now and in 1967, Pfaffenrath said, “Today, operations are much higher tempo; everything is fast-paced, and there is no time to think.� His biggest nugget of wisdom he wishes to impart on his successors is, “Don’t overreact, and don’t forget that you were young once!� After Pfaffenrath’s retirement, he plans on spending his time enjoying his hobbies, which include hunting, fishing and camping, and spending time with his wife of 43 years, Hella, and their son, Christian, daughter, Kristin, and four grandchildren, Annaca, Fabian, Sebastian and Key. The 786th CES and the entire Air Force CE community congratulate Pfaffenrath on his career accomplishments and thank him for his 47 years of loyal service.

Local libraries pull plug on paper mags Story and photo by Dijon Rolle U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz Public Affairs Army libraries across Europe are pulling the plug on paper magazines and going all digital. Beginning this month, patrons will no longer have to visit their local library to search through stacks of paper magazines. Instead, they can just download them from home using the Zinio digital magazine subscription service. The service, billed as the “world’s largest newsstand,” offers iPad, iPhone, Android, Mac, Kindle and personal computer users access to downloadable magazine content for free through the Army Europe library system. Zinio has been available to patrons for almost a year, but Army Europe libraries still offered paper copies of magazines until this month. Library officials at the Landstuhl branch said the move to digital magazines benefits both the Army and library users across Europe. “Everyone at every library has access to this. It equal-
izes the playing field,” said Landstuhl Main Library Director Shawn Friend-Begin. “The libraries in Europe are a lot stronger because we are centralized and this allows us to offer even more services to our patrons wherever they are.” Library technician Deborah Arnett also touted the benefits of the switch. “It gives us more space in the library to expand our audio visual collections, and it’s also easy to use and convenient. You can download it immediately, instead of having to go to the store and buy it or wait for it to come in the mail. You also don’t have to worry about paying to renew multiple magazine subscriptions,” Arnett said. Before the change, the Landstuhl library offered around 110 different paper magazine titles, but now patrons can access more than 450 through Zinio, and staff say that number is expected to increase as the number of Zinio users grows. “Any new person that comes into the library, I immediately tell them about
Zinio because I love it, and the more it gets used the more we are going to keep it around for,” Arnett said. Library staff members say they are happy to train anyone who may not know how to use the service. “I think a lot of people can be hesitant at first, but the key is to do it one time,” Arnett said. “Once they see how easy it is, they’re hooked.” Users must have an Army Europe Library account to access the free Zinio magazine subscription service. Once logged in, they can search for magazines alphabetically or by genre. Downloaded issues can be kept indefinitely and deleted when done. In addition to the Zinio service, the Army Europe library’s website also offers free e-books, audio books, music and other digital content that users can download onto their personal devices. Deployed LRMC Navy unit receives presidential award by Lt. Cmdr. Darla Dietrich Navy Expeditionary Medical Unit 14 During the holiday season, many people donated their time, money and services to help those less fortunate, but the Sailors assigned to Navy Expeditionary Medical Unit 14 believe giving is a year-round mission. In recognition of their efforts, the Sailors assigned to NEMU 14 were presented with the Presidential Volunteer Service Award-Gold Level recently for the unit’s sustained commitment to volunteer service while deployed to Landstuhl Regional Medical Center. The President’s Volunteer Service Award is an initiative of the President’s Council on Service and Civic Participation. It was established to recognize the valuable contributions volunteers make to their communities and set the standard for volunteer service. There are different levels of recognition that can be given to individuals or groups for their community service. The Gold Level award, achieved by NEMU 14, is given to groups that log more than 1,000 hours of service in a 12-month period. Since NEMU 14 arrived in Germany in February 2013, this dedicated team logged more than 4,000 volunteer hours in just six months. Fully integrated into an Army military treatment facility, their spirit of volunteerism is tangible evidence of the LRMC’s motto, “Selfless Service,” and
has carried on a tradition demonstrated by previous NEMUs who have received the Presidential Volunteer Service Medal. NEMU 14 focused most of its volunteer service on continuing the mission of care to the wounded warriors; however, they also participated in opportunities to help build community relations and pay tribute to service members from a different time. Hospital Corpsman First Class Nicholas Kirk’s most memorable volunteer event occurred when a team of Sailors traveled to Clermont, Belgium, to provide support to the Remember Museum. The museum is dedicated to the memory of American warfighters who helped liberate Belgium during World War II. NEMU personnel cleaned artifacts for display and performed maintenance on the facility over a three-day period. “It is through the generosity of friends like the NEMU personnel that efforts to perpetuate the realities of this time in their history are achieved,” said Marcel and Mathilde Schmetz, museum curators. Sailors also demonstrate the spirit of selfless service by chaperoning wounded warriors on LRMC chaplain resiliency trips, serving meals at the USO Warrior Center and Fisher Houses, and handing out clothes to wounded warriors at the hospital’s Chaplain’s Closet. NEMU 14 personnel participated in the regional 2013 Viking Challenge, a 24-hour walkathon that raised more
than $84,000 for charitable organizations in the KMC. The unit took top fundraising honors as volunteers logged more than 450 miles to raise money for the Fisher Houses located on the LRMC compound. “Selfless Service” is one of the Army’s core values. It is something larger than just one person. It is the commitment of each team member to go a little farther, endure a little longer, and look a little closer to see how he or she can add to the effort. NEMU 14 Sailors have truly embedded this core value into their way of life, taking this motto and making it their own. As the NEMU carries on with its mission in this deployment, these personnel will continue to share their Navy spirit of selfless service both on and off duty to the community in which they live and work. The NEMUs at Landstuhl have served wounded warriors in Germany for more than a decade and are made up predominantly of activated Navy Reservists. Their primary mission is to manage the medical air evacuation process for wounded service members coming from CENTCOM, EUCOM and AFRICOM areas of operation to the hospital for medical treatment. They also coordinate the service members’ return to duty or evacuation stateside for further care. Additional NEMU personnel work throughout the hospital in areas such as the operating room, specialty clinics and pharmacy.

oldiers, civilians and family members assembled at the Sembach Fitness Center Jan. 11 for the U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz Sports and Fitness “Get Fit, Stay Fit” Fitness Expo. Patrons came to sample a variety of fitness classes, rotating through 25-minute intervals. They enjoyed yoga, Zumba, stationary bicycle spin classes, weight training, fitness trainers, massage therapists and more. “This event was hosted to introduce the community to the fitness instructors and the variety of classes that are offered in the K-town footprint,” said Steffanie Paoletti, a fitness instructor from the Kaiserslautern area. “K-town has nationally certified fitness professionals. We also have over 10 personal trainers working at all the fitness facilities and two massage therapists in Landstuhl and Sembach,” Paoletti said. First Lt. Victoria L. McDonald, 95th Military Police Battalion, 18th Military Police Brigade, was one of the interested participants Paoletti mentioned. “I thoroughly enjoyed the fitness expo. My favorite fitness activity was the warm-up Zumba,” McDonald said. “I really like Zumba.”

The fitness expo was also attended by other service members and civilians who found they could have fun getting fit. “I really enjoyed the fitness expo,” said Sgt. 1st Class Latoya Lowe, Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 18th MP Bde., 21st Theater Sustainment Command senior human resources NCO. “It was a great opportunity to get fit and have fun. The cycling class was my favorite. (It was) an awesome change from the everyday workout routine. I hope to see
more events like the Halloween Zumbathon and this year’s fitness fair, which challenge individual fitness levels.” In the past, the KMC only hosted fitness expos once per year, but the interest peaked at this event may change that in the future. “We used to only host these once a year,” Paoletti said. “Now we will have to look at hosting them twice a year since so many people showed an interest in these programs.”

Students in Germany earn scholarship, trip to Washington by American Forces Press Service WASHINGTON — Two students from Defense Departmentmanaged high schools in Germany have earned $5,000 scholarships and will represent the Department of Defense Education Activity at the 52nd annual U.S. Senate Youth Program here March 8 to 15. Adrian Talley, DODEA’s acting director, announced that Phillip Ramirez of Vilseck High School and Avalon Roche of Kaiserslautern American High School are this year’s DODEA delegates. Phillip is his school’s student body president and has been class president for three years. He is a member of the Model U.S. Senate Board of Directors, the National Honor Society and the school band. He also has earned varsity letters in cross-country and track. He plans to major in international business in college and hopes to become an officer in the U.S. military and aspires to serve in national government, officials said. Avalon also serves as student body president. She is member of the National Honor Society and Model United Nations, and she is a Girl Scout. She plans to study architecture in college, with a minor in Chinese or Arabic. In the future, offi cials said, she would like to work for the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization preserving World Heritage sites, or as an urban planner. American High School in South Korea and Luke Pirotta of Kubasaki High School in Okinawa, Japan, were chosen as DODEA’s alternate delegates. The program brings 104 of the most outstanding high school students — two from each state, the District of Columbia and DODEA — to the nation’s capital for an intensive week-long study of the federal government and the people who lead it. While in Washington, the students will attend meetings and briefings with senators and congressional staff, the president, a Supreme Court justice, leaders of Cabinet agencies, an ambassador to the United States and top members of the national media, officials said. They also will tour many of the national monuments and several museums. In addition to displaying outstanding leadership abilities and a strong commitment to volunteer work, officials said, the student delegates rank academically in the top 1 percent of their states among high school juniors and seniors. The program’s mission is to help instill knowledge of the American political process and a lifelong commitment to public service, officials said. The Hearst Foundations provide each student delegate with a $5,000 undergraduate college scholarship, with encouragement to continue coursework in government, history and public affairs. The foundation also pays for transportation and all expenses for the delegates, officials said, noting that no government funds are used.

Germans celebrate Fasching until Ash Wednesday Scary costumes, noise chased away winter demons in ancient times by Petra Lessoing 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs The next five and a half weeks is a special time in Germany — it’s for those who like to party, dress up in costumes, and play a different role than in normal day life. In Germany, this time of year is known as the “fifth season.” Depending on the area, this “crazy season” has different names. In the Pfalz, it’s called “Fassenacht” or “Fastnacht,” in Bavaria, it’s “Fasching,” and in the Cologne area, it’s “Karneval.” Fasching officially begins at 11:11 a.m. on the 11th day of the 11th month and ends on Ash Wednesday, which this year is March 5. Every weekend, special Fasching events are held. Signs and posters found in the KMC will announce “Maskenball” (masquerade ball), “Faschingstanz” (Fasching dance), “Kinderfasching” (children’s Fasching party) or “Prunksitzung” (pomp session). There will be parties, dances, funny speeches and parades. It’s the time for being crazy and wild, cheering up, having fun and, the most important factor, it’s the time to dress up in costume. Visitors at Fasching activities are encouraged to wear fancy dresses. If they are not in disguise, they have to pay a higher admission fee when entering community halls, culture centers, sports gyms and other event locations. The best costumes are awarded prizes at some events. During Fasching, women do not
need a male escort when going to a dance. It’s even up to the females to ask the men for a dance — and the men better not say “no.” A typical Fasching event is the “Prunksitzung,” which literally translated means pomp session. Traditionally, carnival associations sponsor and organize this event. Amateur comedians hold, in their local dialect, humorous speeches spiced with sarcasm about local happenings, people or politics in general. In between speeches, carnival club members sing and present dances. A committee consisting of a president and 11 counselors watch the session from their seats in the back of the stage. After each performance, committee members will present medals to the performers. Carnival clubs are represented by a Fastnacht princess or prince. Every year, a new princess or prince is elected and usually gets crowned the night of New Year’s Eve. Usually, the mayor hands them the keys to the city and thus the executive power. Fastnacht has its origin in ancient times, when people realized that with the start of a new year, spring would soon be on its way. To make it possible for spring to arrive, the demons of winter had to be chased away. Therefore, people dressed in evil-looking costumes and masks. They danced in the streets looking like devils, demons and witches and used noise-making devices, bells and drums to scare away the winter ghosts. Through the centuries, the sea-
son developed into a Christian ritual. The literal translation of the word “Fastnacht” means “night of fasting.” Today it’s the time of merriment and laughter preceding Lent, the 40-day period before Easter. The word “Karneval” also refers to the fasting period. The Latin expression “carne vale” means “farewell, meat” and describes the time of celebrations before Lent when people must renounce meat, opulent meals and festivities. The main days of the fifth season are “Altweiberfasching” (old women’s Fasching) on Feb. 27, Rose Monday on March 3 and Fat Tuesday on March 4. Rose Monday is known for colorful parades with floats, musicians, dancers and walking groups in creative costumes going through towns. The biggest parade in the Westpfalz area is in Ramstein-Miesenbach, and it will take place on Fat Tuesday, March 4.

aybe it was the extra 10 pounds during a powerlift or not achieving the correct footing during a parachute landing; injuries can happen at any given moment. For Airmen seeking help in recovery and wanting to get back to the mission, there is a medical section on base providing that support. The 86th Medical Operations Squadron physical therapy clinic works with patients to problem solve and determine the exact cause of dysfunction or pain, then they implement a treatment program to best target the problem and optimize recovery. “Physical therapy is important to the Air Force to keep its members mission ready at any time and complete the tasks asked of all of us by our nation’s leaders,” said Maj. Brian Smith, 86th MDOS staff physical therapist. The clinic has an array of treatments for the patients, including comprehensive exercise programs, manual therapy, manipulation of joints, dry needling and electric therapy for muscle contraction promotion. “On average, we treat about 350 to 400 patients a month,” said Master Sgt. Antwionett Wheeler, 86th MDOS physical therapy physical flight chief. Some of the most common inju-
ries the physical therapy clinic treats are running injuries, lower back pain, shoulder pain and sports injuries. “By far the greatest amount of injuries are from inadequate activity and then being a ‘weekend warrior’ instead of budgeting the busy demands of the Air Force to include adequate physical training,” Smith said. Having physical therapists on base who know the physical requirements of the military physical fitness program also helps Airmen get back to those standards. “Some of the most common injuries occur when an Airman is not fully prepared for an increase in physical exercise or training too late and too fast to pass a fitness test,” Smith said. The clinic also treats patients post operatively and takes care of them for about six to nine months depending on the surgery, helping them get back to their normal daily activities and mission readiness. Smith said poor posturing can also be a cause for a referral to physical therapy. “We spend countless hours at computers, which can cause postural deviations that contribute to neck, lower back, mid back and shoulder pain,” Smith said. The staff of the physical therapy clinic are not miracle workers. Every patient needs to be ready to work hard in order to receive positive recovery. “Patients need to be motivated to improve themselves,” Smith said.
