Ramstein impresses CINC IEA inspectors Story and photos by Airman 1st Class Madelyn Keech 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Members from the Commanderin-Chief’s Installation Excellence selection board visited Ramstein Air Base, Jan. 12 and 13. The distinguished visitors observed units across Ramstein to assess how well the base achieved Department of Defense objectives throughout 2021. Units across Ramstein shared briefings and demonstrations to showcase the base’s installation security, force development, mission support, quality of life and unit morale, environmental stewardship, health, safety, communications, innovation projects, and public relations to a panel of five judges. “We escorted and showed off what Ramstein has done for the past year and why we deserve the excellence award for our installation,” said U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Jordan Anthony, 86th Communications See CINC INSPECTION, Page 2

Each team had a category of areas to focus on such as education or readiness. “They were here to look at how we as a team uphold each of those [objectives] and how we work together to make Ramstein the best installation,” said Col. Elizabeth Hanson, 521st Air Mobility Operations Wing vice commander. “They looked at everything the installation does from the 86th [Airlift Wing], to the [521] AMOW,

to the 435th [Air Expeditionary Wing], and everything in between with all the connections and partnerships that they have.” The CINC award winner will receive a $1.25y million prize, a commemorative trophy, flag and a letter from the president. As one out of two finalists, Ramstein will receive a cash prize to improve quality of life across the base. Fairchild Air Force Base is the other finalist competing for the award. “Chief Kelley and I couldn’t be prouder of the entire wing and the Kaiserslautern Military Community who helped Ramstein become a finalist once again,” said U.S. Air Force Brig. Gen. Josh Olson, 86th Airlift Wing commander. The results of the CINC Installation Excellence award will be released late March.

NATO Secretary General, German Chancellor discuss Russia’s military build-up Story and photo by North Atlantic Treaty Organization Public Affairs NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg thanked German chancellor Olaf Scholz for his strong personal commitment to NATO and Germany’s leading role in the Alliance during a visit to Berlin Jan. 18. Speaking at a press conference alongside the German Chancellor, the Secretary General stressed that NATO was ready to continue dialogue with Russia but will not compromise on core principles for European security. Mr. Stoltenberg warned that the risk of conflict in Europe remains real because of Russia’s continuing “unexplained and unjustified” military build-up in and around Ukraine. “NATO Allies call on Russia to de-escalate”, Mr. Stoltenberg said. “Any further

aggression will come with a high cost for Moscow.” The Secretary General made clear that NATO is ready to continue dialogue with Russia. ”I

have today invited all the members of the NATO-Russia Council to a series of meetings,” Stoltenberg said. He added that Allies are prepared to look at a range of issues

with Russia, including strengthening military and civilian lines of communications, reducing risks and enhancing transparency regarding military activities, as

well as reducing space and cyber threats. “We are also prepared to resume the exchange of briefings on exercises, and on our respective nuclear policies and Allies are prepared to discuss arms control, disarmament and non-proliferation,” the Secretary General said. At the same time, Mr. Stoltenberg reiterated that each nation has the right to choose its own path and that NATO will continue to protect its Allies. “When tensions are high, dialogue is even more important,” the Secretary General said, adding that Allies will make every effort to find a political way forward. During his visit to Berlin, the Secretary General also met with Germany’s Defence Minister Christine Lambrecht and took part in a panel discussion organized by the Körber Foundation together with the magazine Der Spiegel.

World traveling loadmaster

U.S. Air Force Senior Airman Marissa Loya, 37th Airlift Squadron loadmaster, prepares a presentation at Ramstein Air Base, Dec. 9, 2021. Loya was selected for Airlifter of the Week not only because of her ability to execute daily responsibilities efficiently, such as loading and offloading operations, weight and balance composition, and assistance on combat, aeromedical and humanitarian missions, but because of taking on additional duties in her office.

Story and photos by Airman 1st Class Madelyn Keech 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs U.S. Air Force Senior Airman Marissa Loya, 37th Airlift Squadron loadmaster, was originally born in Albuquerque, N.M., and moved around a lot during her childhood but claims Maryland as her home. For Loya, who was recently selected Airlifter of the Week, the military was something that always seemed appealing to her, specifically the sense of camaraderie, the structure and the lifestyle. She has been stationed at three bases: Yokota Air Base, Japan, Little Rock Air Force Base, Ark., and Ramstein Air Base. Loya said she enjoys her job as a loadmaster because she has the opportunity to travel on missions. Her favorite experience was

being in Thailand while stationed at Yokota AB. “I didn’t get to go, but some of my coworkers went to the elephant sanctuary,” Loya said. “And we went to the tiger zoo and I got to hold tiger cubs. They were so cute.” Currently, Loya’s goals are to pay off education expenses and travel as much as she is able while stationed in Europe. Some of the places she said she wants to visit are Croatia, Tel Aviv and France. “Being in Europe definitely provides a unique experience and opportunity because you can travel to all of these countries in a matter of an hour,” she said. “I am super happy that I’m getting that experience.” Loya arrived on station here in March and said she has enjoyed the opportunities the fast-paced environment at Ramstein has to offer. “You hit the ground running

here,” she said. “For a lot of brand new loadmasters, they can learn so much here very quickly.” Loya was selected for AotW not only because of her ability to execute daily responsibilities efficiently, such as loading and offloading operations, weight and balance composition, and assistance on combat, aeromedical and humanitarian missions, but because of taking on additional duties in her office. Loya is in charge of awards and decorations and goes above and beyond in streamlining enlisted performance report processing for her unit. “Her constant positive attitude and go-getter mentality really impacts many members in the squadron,” said Master Sgt. Ricardo Galvan, 37 AS flight chief. “She is a great value to our team and a positive role model for the younger Airmen.”

Film director Oliver Stone was a soldier in Vietnam

Oliver Stone in 1987.

by David Vergun Department of Defense NEWS Acclaimed screenwriter and director Oliver Stone, whose work includes “Wall Street” (1987), “The Doors” (1991), “JFK” (1991) and “Nixon” (1995), served in the Army and deployed to Vietnam from 1967 to 1968. His wartime experiences would shape some of his later films. Stone enlisted in April 1967. He requested combat duty and that’s exactly what he got. He arrived in South Vietnam Sept. 16, 1967, assigned to 2nd Platoon, Bravo Company, 3rd Battalion, 25th Infantry, stationed near the Cambodian border. He was wounded twice in combat and was awarded the Bronze Star Medal for valor. His wounds were either a bullet or shrapnel to the neck and the other was shrapnel to the legs and buttocks. Regarding the Bronze Star, Stone wrote about it in his rather long-titled book: “Chasing the Light: Writing, Directing, and Surviving Platoon, Midnight Express, Scarface, Salvador, and the Movie Game.” “We had run into a mean little ambush which had cost us a lieutenant and a sergeant, as well as our scout dog, a German shepherd I’d taken a liking to. It was one of those strange firefights that grew from a few random shots into a disorganized raging storm of bullets,” he wrote. “Maybe I was just cold and angry about the dog’s death or the futility of it all. Or maybe I just had a headache, and the sun was burning too hot in my eyes. ... All I knew was that this was my moment to act,” he said.

Photos courtesy of Oliver Stone

“Exposing myself to the enemy, I moved up quickly on a oneman spider hole between our two platoons — from which I sensed someone had just fired. On instinct, from 15 yards out, I pulled the pin on my grenade and hurled it. It was a crazy risk. If I’d overthrown the grenade, it probably would’ve wounded or killed some of our own men crouched beyond the hole.” “But it was a perfect pitch, and the grenade sailed into the tiny hole like a long throw from an outfielder into a catcher’s mitt, followed quickly by the concussed thump of the explosion. Wow. I’d done it!” he said. After recovering from his wounds, he transferred to the 1st Cavalry Division and was assigned to a long-range reconnaissance platoon. On Jan. 1, 1968, Stone’s platoon, part of two battalions, was patrolling along the Cambodian border. That night, they came under a massive attack from a North Vietnamese regiment which outnumbered them. The battle would last ‘till nearly dawn. “The sound of small-arms fire, heavy artillery and bombs hardly let up all night, bigger than any fireworks I’d ever seen. Stunningly beautiful, in its way,” he wrote. “And now there was an enormous roar, like I suppose the end of the world sounds. Like a shark cutting through water, an F-4 Phantom jet fighter was coming in very low over our perimeter out of the night sky. So low, that doomsday sound. They were going to drop their payload on us and we were all going to die.” “I jumped into the closest fox-

Oliver Stone, right, in South Vietnam, sometime in 1967 or 1968.

hole and buried myself as deep as I could in the earth, which trembled and shook as a 500-pound bomb dropped somewhere close,” he recalled. “Full daylight revealed charred bodies, dusty napalm and gray trees. Men who died grimacing, in frozen positions, some of them still standing or kneeling in rigor mortis, white chemical death on their faces. Dead, so dead. Some covered in white ash, some burned black. Their expressions, if they could be seen, were overtaken with anguish and horror.” “In the next hours I grasped the extent of what had happened. Most of the dead were fully uniformed, well-armed North Vietnamese regulars. Those who were relatively intact we brought in on stretchers, walking out to find them, or pieces of them. A bulldozer had been airlifted in to dig burial pits. I helped throw the bloating bodies into the giant pits late into that day.” “There were maybe 400 of their dead. We’d lost some 25 men, with more than 150 wounded, yet I hadn’t fired a single shot or even seen one enemy soldier. It was bizarre,” he wrote. “We worked in rotating shifts, two men, three men, swinging the corpses like a haul of fish from the sea. Later we poured fuel on them, and then the bulldozers rolled mounds of dirt over them, so they’d be forever extinct. I was too young to understand. No person should ever have to witness so much death,” he said. Stone was honorably discharged in November 1968, the same month he arrived stateside from Vietnam. The Vietnam GI Bill helped pay for his enrollment in New York

University, where he studied filmmaking under Martin Scorsese. He broke into Hollywood as a screenwriting notable, with his Oscar-winning screenplay for “Midnight Express” (1978). A string of other screenplays he wrote followed, including “Conan the Barbarian” (1982), “Scarface” (1983), and “Year of the Dragon” (1985). Stone’s Vietnam experience can be seen in three films he wrote and directed: “Platoon” (1986), “Born on the Fourth of July” (1989), and “Heaven and Earth” (1993). “Platoon” was always Stone’s story and he worked 10 years to get it on screen, said retired Marine Capt. Dale Dye, who played Army Capt. Harris, the commander of Company B. Dye, who was also the film’s technical advisor, was the only Vietnam combat veteran on the set beside Stone. He shared some of his thoughts on the filming. “Oliver and I often had intimate and unspoken moments sparked by something we were staging or filming. I recall both of us having to walk away for a few minutes while we were filming the scene that involved interrogating some villagers. We had employed actual Vietnamese refugees that we’d found in the Philippines and being surrounded by extras shrieking and conversing in

Vietnamese brought us both right back to Nam,” he said in a Dec. 29, 2021, interview with this journalist. “Most people don’t know it, but the patrol scene that runs during the opening credits was actually the last day of my training for the cast. Oliver observed the patrol I was leading along a riverbed and loved the look of it, so he changed what he originally had planned and filmed the patrol instead,” Dye recalled. “He was always doing things like that, shooting targets of opportunity, whenever he saw something that jogged his memories of his own experiences. And, it was really valuable to me personally as an aspiring filmmaker. I learned a ton just watching Oliver and Bob Richardson work,” he said. Richardson was the film’s cinematographer.

Air Force unveils action plan to ‘Develop tomorrow’s enlisted Airmen’ Secretary of the Air Force Public Affairs As the service continues to refine what is needed to develop the Airmen required to fight and win our future wars, Air Force officials announced the implementation of the Enlisted Force Development Action Plan, located at https://www. af.mil/Portals/1/images/news2022/EFD-Action-Plan.pdf. With a goal to complete 28 force development objectives in the next two years, the plan and a corresponding “Blueprint for Enlisted Force Development,” releasing in the spring, is aligned with the Air Force chief of staff’s action orders and is focused on investing in and empowering Airmen for the future fight. “The fight for tomorrow has already begun and it will undoubtedly be fought by many Airmen who are serving today,” said Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. CQ Brown, Jr. “As we continue to focus on our readiness against strategic competitors, specifically China and Russia, our Airmen will need to be prepared to defeat the speed and complexity of threats we face around the globe each day. This plan is designed to do just that.” Deliberate development of the enlisted force, which represents over 75% of the Air Force’s military personnel, means a culture of teamwork that integrates everyone’s diverse abilities, talents, and ideas is essential to maximize and deliver meaningful results. “An environment focused on developing and managing the talents of our Airmen is key for their ability to thrive and reach their full potential,” said Chief Master Sgt. of the Air Force JoAnne S. Bass. “Deliberate development of the enlisted force is a mission imperative and must be a top priority for anyone who is expected to lead – from front-line supervisors to commanders.” Soon to accompany the plan is “The Blueprint for Enlisted Force Development.” This document will serve as a living foundational resource that links all enlisted development from entry to departure, including key concepts to connect enlisted Airmen to the Profession of Arms. “The blueprint serves as a focal point to create a shared understanding of our Air Force journey,” Bass said. “This will provide every Airman a roadmap that highlights pathways, resources and opportunities to be successful.” The premise of the action plan is centered on six areas that align with Air Force priorities and the CSAF Action Orders, with quarterly report cards to the force for

enlisted professional military education to address historical gaps over a career, curating quality content, and professionalizing a larger cadre to connect development objectives to base levels. “In order to succeed in the 21st Century fight, Airmen need an interconnected development system that supports continuous growth,” Bass said. “We have to do this by harnessing the modern capabilities that exist in the Information Age to build greater connections between initial skills, technical, and on the job training, education, and experiences.”

accountability and transparency on updates and progress on each area. Competition-focused force Supporting Action Orders Airmen and Competition, this area consists of objectives tied to developing a highly trained, educated and adaptable Airman ready to operate in a joint environment and to dominate the competition. Initiatives include updating the “Little Blue Book,” Air Force Core Values, and “Little Brown Book,” Enlisted Force Structure, along with the creation of a “Purple Book” that includes the values, capabilities, and warfighting concepts of the Joint Force team. Front-line leader development Supporting Action Orders Airmen, Competition and Design, this area is focused on deliberate leadership development for Airmen as they take on the increased responsibility of caring for others. Initiatives include “The Blueprint for Enlisted Force Development,” developing validation processes for new supervisors, elevating the value placed on experience and creating a standardized Air Force writing guide. “Saying ‘you’ll figure it out’ to new supervisors can’t be our default approach,” Bass said. “We must be more deliberate — especially when it comes to people.” Teaming to solve problems Supporting Action Orders Airmen and Competition, this focus area is centered on teaming with the ability to operate and survive in all domains.

Initiatives include training and developing Airmen at all levels to foster inclusion and value diversity, cultivate the problem-solving capabilities inherent within our people, and enabling command teams to better engage with community partners and develop exercise models to increase confidence to operate under Mission Command. “Embracing a multi-capable mindset to operate beyond traditional specialties toward the commander’s intent while decisively executing with speed, discipline, and confidence is key to the vision of the 2030 force,” Brown said. “At the same time, operating as part of a collaborative team requires Airmen to bring their unique and diverse perspectives to meet mission objectives in seizing the competitive advantage.” Resilience is foundational to readiness Supporting Action Order Airmen, this focus area supports the understanding that well-being enhances resilience and builds ready Airmen. Initiatives include instituting “Airmen’s Time” at units to elevate connections and prioritize well-being of Airmen, further development of wellness education programs, better utilization of Resilience Training Assistants and Master Resilience Trainers as well as financial fitness and Transition Assistance programs tailored for each tier. “Airmen and families who are resilient and ready are the foundation of everything we do as an Air Force,” Brown said. “Prioritizing our readiness in the human domain mitigates the threats we

face and keeps our enlisted force primed to compete.” Force development ecosystem Supporting Action Orders Airmen, Competition, and Design, this area is focused on opening development opportunities beyond traditional classes, courses, and schools - to provide the right content at the right time. Initiatives include creating an Air Force-wide development plan and framework for enlisted competency progression, re-imagining

Systems to match values Supporting Action Orders Bureaucracy and Design, this area is focused on reducing systems, processes, or practices that unnecessarily robs Airmen of time or stands in the way of achieving Air Force priorities. Initiatives include transforming the Airmen feedback process, revamping enlisted performance evaluations to align with Airmen Leadership Qualities, advancing promotion testing to include situational judgment application, formalizing the career broadening program, to include developmental special duties, and improving talent management systems to capitalize on them. “This plan is about accountability and action…not talk,” Brown said. “While we can’t do this all at once, we will not wait to begin developing the Airmen of 2030 today.”

21 TSC volunteers model community service beyond MLK day by Eleanor Prohaska 21st Theater Sustainment Command

helped her connect with the community. She experienced the strength of those connections when her family had to quarantine for two weeks. Many of the people who offered support were people she met while volunteering.

“People from the spouses club, and people I met volunteering at the thrift store and the schools where I volunteer, the sports that my kids are in — everybody has reached out to us to see how they could help,” said Thimsen. “I thought that was very, you know…” Thimsen did not finish her sentence, but the emotion behind her unspoken words said it all. “I’m glad that I’ve become a part of these places,” she continued. “Over here we need each other.” Kathleen Anastasi understands that need. As a 21st STB spouse

sponsor, she welcomes incoming families, helping them transition to Germany and providing resources to help them make their own connections. “With this pandemic it was difficult to have any kind of normalcy in our lives,” said Anastasi. “Being locked down for almost a year really affected the mental, physical and emotional state of families. What was rewarding is we adapted to the situation and figured out ways to reach out to families via Facebook, email or WhatsApp. I was able to sponsor three incoming families to the EXP March 31, 2022

Martin Luther King Jr. Day, observed each year on the third Monday in January, is the only federal holiday designated as a National Day of Service. It encourages all Americans to volunteer to improve their communities. Many Service Members and Family members attached to the 21st Theater Sustainment Command have already heeded that call, setting an example for others to follow year-round. 21st TSC Special Troops Battalion spouse Katie Thimsen donates her skills and time as secretary for the Kaiserslautern Landstuhl Spouses Association, the KLSA Thrift Shop and Kaiserslautern Middle and Elementary schools. She also joined with dozens of Kaiserslautern Military Community members who volunteered during Operation Allies Welcome, organizing and distributing donations to Afghan travelers at Rhine Ordnance Barracks. “I like that I am able to help out members of our military community, and that I can meet new people,” said Thimsen. “I’ve gotten to know more people. Not just in my husband’s unit but people in other units, and outside of the Army, in the Air Force.” As a school and Parent Teacher Association volunteer at Kaiserslautern Elementary and Middle schools, Thimsen appreciates the message her community service sends to daughter Mary and son Lukas. “Having me there, seeing my presence — I think it’s good for them to see that people benefit from volunteering.” The benefits go both ways. Thimsen says volunteering has

21st TSC, and with COVID precautions in place, be able to meet them, provide a welcome kit from the 21STB. “The families appreciated the care, connection, and resources to make their transition a bit more comfortable. I continue to touch base with them to provide any resources or if they have questions.” Anastasi, who is also the Hospitality and Volunteer Chair for the KLSA, has volunteered more than 15 years in various capacities in multiple locations. She believes volunteers are vital to the community. “They [volunteers] contribute valuable life-skills, experiences and networking connections while on the assigned installation,” she said. “Volunteers are the heart for any organization.” She also sees the positive impacts on the volunteer, including gaining skills and making contacts that can turn into lasting friendships. In addition to regular volunteer service, Thimsen and Anastasi pitch in for community events such as the Halloween trunk or treat, Thanksgiving meals for single soldiers and a recent holiday cookie drive. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., has been quoted as saying, “Life’s most persistent and urgent question is, ‘What are you doing for others?’” Thimsen and Anastasi can answer that question easily. Family housing surveys produce results

Graphic by Ivelin Radkov/Shutterstock.com

by Nicole Alberico U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz The annual Army Family Housing Tenant Satisfaction Survey kicks off Tuesday and Baumholder Military Community leadership is counting on this year’s poll to bring even more feedback than last year’s. “We are listening. Because of last year’s results, the Baumholder Military Community took swift action to address concerns about parking, renovations and landscape beautification,” said deputy garrison manager Jae Kim. According to BMC Housing Chief Harald Kastner, residents can expect to receive the link to the survey via their email addresses on file with the housing office; therefore, he said, residents need to ensure that they have access to those accounts. Residents can contact the housing office to update their information. He said the surveys are compatible on smartphones, tablets and computers.

Kastner said that residents will receive a unique survey code and ensured residents have anonymity. He added that residents should not share their code; it’s unique to one user. “We can only see from which neighborhood the survey participated,” said Kastner. Parking, especially at Smith Barracks, is an issue that has been mentioned both in previous surveys and at BMC housing town halls. In response, the Department of Public Works team repainted spaces to create more spots and started an enforceable parking permit system for Smith Barracks residents, according to Kastner. Additionally, Baumholder is planning a full-scale beautification project and, according to Kastner, contracted custodial services for stairway housing are in the works. “We’re working diligently to make the BMC housing areas look better than ever,” said Kim. “Baumholder is already a beauti-

ful place but we want to make our residential areas the gem of the region.” According to Kim, survey feedback also shapes the future of Army housing. In-unit improvements such as washer and dryers have already been implemented and the rolling shutters and balconies are projected to arrive in the next two years. Additional town houses and new schools are planned for the Wetzel housing area in three to five years, said Kim. “We fought and won the authorization for tenants to use their own air conditioning units,” said Kim. “Residents will eventually get the best of both worlds – the cooling effect of German rolladens and the comfort of home with AC.”

Government contracts and renovations are not a quick process, said Kastner. Current residents may not get instant gratification from 2022 survey results but they now are reaping the rewards of surveys past. “Current residents may not get to see these changes but actions they take now will be appreciated by Soldiers and their families to come,” said Kastner. Kastner said this year’s survey questions are similar to 2021’s questionnaire and that residents can anticipate questions about: • Visual appeal of the community. • Outdoor safety and amenities such as parking, sidewalks, parks.

• Satisfaction of in-unit appliances and finishes. • Timeliness and service of maintenance requests and repairs. • Customer service of housing office. “Each and every one of our residents can make a difference. Small things can have big and lasting impressions,” said Kastner. “If our residents let us know what could make their live easier and if it is doable we will make or acquire those changes.” The Tenant Satisfaction Survey is Office of Management and Budget approved: OMB Control Number 0704-0553; OMB Expiration Date 03/31/2022.

HPCON Charlie, a number of measures were put in place at the direction of Michael Donley, the director for administration and management at the Pentagon. Included among those measures are that organizations within the building are expected to maintain occupancy rates of less than 25% of what is considered normal. Individuals in the building, regardless of vaccination status, must wear masks at all times except if they are alone in a closed office, while eating or drinking, or when pulling the mask down for identification purposes. The memorandum also said that COVID-19 vaccinations, including booster shots, remain available at the Dilorenzo Pentagon Health Clinic, which Kirby said the department continues to recommend to all personnel. “We continue to encourage all DOD employees and their eligible family members to get a booster shot, and obviously ... to get fully vaccinated,” he said. Right now, COVID-19 vaccinations are a requirement for all U.S. military personnel, while booster shots are not required. Kirby told reporters that no decision has yet been made about making booster shots a requirement. “We are still in discussions here at the Pentagon about the booster shots and there’s been no ... decision made about making them mandatory,” he said. “But as the secretary has said many times to the force ... If you’re eligible, if you meet the criteria, we absolutely encourage those members of our workforce to get the booster shots because it really does help lessen the effects if, in fact, one contracts the virus.”

Great Tempory Lodging in a Charming Historical Farmhouse Avaiable from 5th of October Bremerhof 3a, 67663 Kaiserslautern GermanyMobil: 00 49 171 313 6996, Mail: info@judithkern.com

You have been searching for the perfect house for your retirement and you finally found it! It is just the right size for your new life after work and you are ready to pull the trigger on it. Before that next great leap, there are some things you will need to do. If you wish to retire in Germany and are no longer associated with the U.S. military, you will lose your SOFA status and consequently will become a tourist. A regular U.S. citizen can stay in Germany for 90 days without requiring a residence permit. You will fall under this category as soon as you retire. What you have to do is apply for a residence permit (Aufenthaltsgenehmigung) at the Foreigners’ Registration Office (Ausländerbehörde). If you live in the City of Kaiserslautern (city includes: Dansenberg, Einsiedlerhof, Erfenbach with Lampertsmühle and Stockborn, Erlenbach, Hohenecken with Espensteig, Mölschbach, Morlautern with Waldhof, and Siegelbach) then the office in Rathaus-Nord, Benzinoring 1, is the appropriate

office for you. If you live in Kaiserslautern County (county includes: Bann, Bruchmühlbach-Miesau, EnkenbachAlsenborn, Erzenhausen, Eulenbis, Fischbach, Frankelbach, Frankenstein, Gerhardsbrunn, Hauptstuhl, Heiligenmoschel, Hirschhorn/Pfalz, Hochspeyer, Hütschenhausen, Katzweiler, Kindsbach, Kollweiler, Kottweiler-Schwanden, Krickenbach, Lambsborn, Landstuhl, Langwieden, Linden, Mackenbach, Martinshöhe, Mehlbach, Mehlingen, Mittelbrunn, Neuhemsbach, Niederkirchen, Niedermohr, Oberarnbach, Olsbrücken, Otterbach, Otterberg, Queidersbach, Ramstein-Miesenbach, Reichenbach-Steegen, Rodenbach, Schallodenbach, Schneckenhausen, Schopp, Schwedelbach, Sembach, Steinwenden, Stelzenberg, Sulzbachtal, Trippstadt, Waldleiningen, and Weilerbach), then you would need to contact the Foreigners’ Registration Office in the County Administration (Kreisverwaltung), Lauterstr. 8.

You will have to provide the following: • Proof of income (Einkommensnachweis). Submitting copies of your retirement pay is usually sufficient. • Proof of health insurance (Krankenversicherung). If you remain covered through the U.S. system, then submit proof of this. Otherwise, you will have to acquire health insurance on the German economy. • Passports and photos of you and each family member. If you are married and your spouse is not German, the above items are also required of your spouse. You will also need to submit a marriage certificate, regardless of your spouse’s nationality. It is advisable to start early on these things, however, as long as you have SOFA status, you cannot start this process. When you lose your status, you will be considered a U.S. tourist who just entered the country. After this, you can stay in Germany for 90 days without needing a status. As soon as you lose the SOFA status, you should begin the

process of applying for a residence permit. Make an appointment at the Foreigners’ Registration Office (Ausländerbehörde). Call 0631-365-2245/2584 for the Kaiserslautern City Administration or 0631-7105-201/401 for the County Administration. Take the above items to the appropriate office. Your documents will be reviewed. There is no fixed time for the process. It can be a matter of two weeks or longer. Therefore, it is highly recommended you begin the process as soon as you lose your SOFA status. Usually, a residence permit must be renewed annually. Also, you will not receive German health benefits if you do not pay into the German health care system through employment. Therefore, you will only receive a residence permit if you already have your own health care. If you do end up working on the economy, you will then pay for German health insurance, which entitles you to receive German health benefits. There is no specific job you will need to acquire in order to stay in Germany. Most retirees have sufficient income through their pension.

Blood Donations are mission critical 365 days a year by Spc. Xuyang Zhao 21st Theater Sustainment Command The holidays may be over, but the spirit of giving is stronger than ever during National Blood Donor month in January. Service members with the 512th Field Hospital, 519th Hospital Center, 30th Medical Brigade know the impact blood donations have on Army readiness and capability. “Blood donations are more than important — they are mission essential,” said 1st Lt. Carter Howell, surgical nurse with 519th Hospital Center. “Just one trauma event downrange can wipe out a supply from one full drive,” said Howell. She added that providers and deployed medical forces are not considered capable if they do not have the required blood inventory, so donating on a regular basis is the best way to prepare for future emergencies. Howell and other 30th Med. Bde. Service Members regularly support the Armed Services Blood Program, the official blood program of the U.S. military. “Blood donors who take the hour out of their day are helping maintain the blood supply for our

own military and ensure we have blood on the shelves when it’s needed,” said Capt. Melissa Miller, chief of the Armed Services Blood Bank Center – Europe. “All the blood donated with the ASBP stays within the military, to help forwarddeployed U.S. and NATO service members around the world and also patients in military medical facilities like Landstuhl Regional Medical Center.” While stationed in Hawaii, Staff Sgt. Samantha Covert, noncommissioned officer in charge of the field hospital laboratory, saw firsthand why proactive blood donation is so important before a traumatic event happens. “At Tripler Army Medical Center in 2018, we had a mother who started hemorrhaging and we ran out of blood products within about two hours,” Covert said. The incident prompted a surge in blood donations, and the patient was treated successfully. However, not every outcome will be favorable because new blood donations require extensive testing and cannot be used right away. The testing process is done to ensure that patients receive the correct blood type, minimizing the chances of a

negative transfusion reaction. With her experience in the blood bank at Landstuhl, Miller understands only too well how this works. “Often when a military hospital or blood bank runs low on blood, we have to reach out to local organizations to get blood that has been tested and will be safe for that patient,” said Miller. “When blood banks get a surge of donations following a tragedy in the news, that blood will still need to be tested so it will typically help replenish the blood supply for future patients.” In a deployment setting where blood is not always readily available, the military offers a unique solution - walking blood banks. These can allow service members with matching blood types to donate immediately to their peers in an emergency setting. Walking blood banks rely on prior testing of potential blood donors and is only used when other resources are unavailable. “Soldiers will always donate for other Soldiers” said Howell. Giving blood can be incredibly satisfying. For Capt. Shelby Aleksick, intensive care unit nurse with the 519th Hospital Center, see-

Capt. Shelby Aleksick, nurse with 30th Medical Brigade, donates blood with the Department of Defense’s Armed Services Blood Program on Jan. 12 on Rhine Ordnance Barracks. All blood donated at ASBP blood drives helps maintain the military’s own blood supply for use on and off the battlefield.

ing what a unit of blood will do for a patient’s disposition is the most significant reward. “In a matter of six hours, you’ve pumped life back into a person,” said Aleksick. Donors can make a direct impact on the well-being of their fellow service members and families by visiting www.militarydonor. com and search by the Sponsor Code: Europe to find mobile blood drives and schedule appointments.

When blood drives are full, donors can join a wait list using instructions on the website or by emailing usarmy.donate-blood@mail.mil. Donors who have never been pregnant and have Blood Type A, B or AB are also needed to donate platelets and plasma at the blood donor center on Landstuhl. Appointments are available Mondays-Thursdays, and appointments are available by calling DSN 590-7501, or 06371-9464-7501.

Airmen, The story of Andrew Marshall in The Last Warrior: Andrew Marshall and the Shaping of Modern American Defense Strategy is a profound account of a virtually unknown, yet brilliant strategic thinker who was enormously influential in shaping American military thought for nearly half a century. Today, Marshall’s hallmark methodology, the “Net Assessment,” remains an essential diagnostic framework for understanding strategic competition through the lenses of capabilities, challenges, and perceptions. Last September, I wrote a Letter to Airmen emphasizing a culture of innovation in our Air Force. The Mind of War: John Boyd and American Security is as much the story of Boyd’s innovative spirit as his groundbreaking ideas on warfare. Alongside a tenacity for outmaneuvering bureaucracy, Boyd was a maverick, and had innovation baked into his DNA. Who is the “Maverick” in your squadron? Today, a new generation of strategic thinkers and mavericks defend our nation. Dr. Meghan Grace’s #GenZ podcast Gen Z and Leadership reveals insights into the

values and behaviors of Generation Z so that leaders at all echelons, myself included, can better relate to what defines and motivates our youngest cohort of professional Airmen. The idea of “why” is a timeless concept that motivates across generational gaps. The critically acclaimed Netflix docuseries Five Came Back is a mesmerizing examination of our nation’s “why” before and during World War II through the lens of five prominent Hollywood directors. Their stories will leave you with a renewed sense of awe for the Greatest Generation. I hope you will spend time to reflect upon these ideas and share your thoughts with your fellow Airmen. Sincerely, Charles Q. Brown, Jr. General, U.S. Air Force Chief of Staff Editor's note: The CSAF Leadership Library is a fluid set of media selected by Gen. Brown that evolves as novel ideas are published, recorded, and debated. New entries will be added periodically throughout the year.

He was also the oldest living player on a World Series-winning team and the oldest living member of the Baltimore Orioles, Cleveland Indians, Chicago White Sox, Detroit Tigers, New York Yankees, Philadelphia and Kansas City Athletics and Washington Senators.

He was the last living Major League Baseball player who played at League Park in Cleveland, which the Indians abandoned after the 1946 season. Following the death of Val Heim on Nov. 21, 2019, Robinson became the oldest living former player. Robinson was also the last living player from the 1942 season, as well as the oldest living player whose major league career was interrupted by World War II service. Robinson’s career started with the Indians in 1942 and ended with the Orioles in 1957. His overall MLB batting average was .278.

He hit 172 home runs and had 723 runs batted in. Robinson’s time with the Indians was put on hold after the 1942 season when he enlisted in the Navy. Robinson said he was recruited by former world heavyweight boxing champion and World War I veteran Gene Tunney, who encouraged athletes to join the military. For almost four years, Robinson played first base for the Bluejackets at Norfolk Naval Training Station, Virginia. They went up against military and MLB teams. Because McClure Baseball Field was close to the Atlantic Ocean, civilians were not allowed

to enter the base to watch the games due to German U-boats operating in the area. Even reporters were banned from entering the base, so military writers and photographers covered the games. In 1943, Robinson led the club with eight home runs and 79 RBIs. On May 24, 1943, the Bluejackets defeated the Washington Senators 4-3 at Griffith Park in Washington. The $2 million ticket proceeds were donated for the purchase of war bonds. The U-boat menace along the East Coast increased, and besides playing baseball, Robinson

received antisubmarine warfare training in 1944. In 1944, Robinson tied with St. Louis Browns’ outfielder Glenn “Red” McQuillen with 11 home runs and 26 doubles and finished the season with 99 RBIs and a .282 batting average. After his MLB career as a player ended in 1957, Robinson coached and managed a number of MLB teams. In 2011, Robinson wrote his autobiography, “Lucky Me: My Sixty-five Years in Baseball.” One of Robinson’s sons later served in the Navy aboard the USS Theodore Roosevelt aircraft carrier in the early 1970s.

Craft projects that you & your kids will love

by William Reynolds contributing writer for MilitaryInGermany.com Do rainy days spell indoor doldrums for you and your kids? If you can’t get away from it all, why not stay indoors and enjoy some crafts? Here are two projects that help kids hone their artistic skills while having a ball. Mobile Your family can have hours of fun creating artistic mobiles and hanging them from the ceiling. You can start your kids out on simple mobiles, and once they get the hang of it, they may start building more and more complex creations. Assemble your materials, you’ll need some drinking straws, several paper clips, and some construction paper. Let’s start by making some shapes. Colored paper cutouts can represent letters of the alphabet, planets, stars, animals or whatever your children love to make. Have your kids draw and decorate the shapes

on the construction paper, then cut the shapes out for them unless they’re old enough to do it themselves. Is there anything colored paper can’t do? Now turn your attention to the framework. Start by slipping a single paper clip along a drinking straw until it reaches the center, pointing upward. String paper clips together until you have a chain of them attached to this center clip. (You’ll attach the free end to the ceiling.) Attach two more paper clips at each end, both pointing downward. Now take a second drinking straw and do the same thing; this time, however, string two paper clip chains from the center clip — one going upward, the other going downward. Attach paper clip chains of varying lengths to each end clip. Now you can assemble the parts of your mobile. Start by connecting the center chains each “level” to one end of the level above it. Once you have at least three levels of drinking straws, you can

clip your shapes so that they hang down from each level at different heights. Miniature Puppet Theater Kids of all ages love puppets, so imagine how much fun you and your children can have creating your very own puppet theater for indoor entertainment on those rainy days. Crafting these little individuals and giving them a beautiful home can prove just as enjoyable as the show itself! First, ask your kids what kind of story they want to tell. Do they love medieval tales of knights and wizards? Do they want to create their own jungle populated by loveable animals? Anything is possible in the world of puppet theater, so encourage them to let their imaginations run wild. Ready to make your puppets? Simply draw the basic shapes for the heads, limbs and torsos onto different colors of construction paper and cut the shapes out. Glue the heads and limbs onto the

torso and draw any little details that you need to bring the characters to life. Once the glue has dried, take your assembled paper puppet and attach it to a popsicle stick or drinking straw. You’ll use the stick or straw to manoeuvre the puppet. Express yourselves through your puppet creations! Now it’s time to create the theater, using a rectangular cardboard box. Cut one of the smaller sides away; this will serve as the “floor” of the stage. Next, make a large window in one of the larger sides; this open area gives you a proscenium. Draw or paint a festive background on a sheet of paper and tape it to the inside rear panel of the box. Finally, perch the theater on top of an open space so the kids can operate their puppets through the bottom. It’s showtime! There you have it — two simple, easy projects that you and your kids will love. So stock up on colored paper, and stop worrying about the weather report!

If you speak English at work and English (or another non-German language) at home, you might think, “Why bother?” However, learning to speak German — even a little bit — is a golden opportunity. The benefits of speaking multiple languages are many and proven. And you’ll never be in a better place to improve the level of your German language skill. Unfortunately, many of the traditional modes of language acquisition, like inperson classes, aren’t available right now. Fortunately, however, there are plenty of other options (most of them free) to help you rapidly improve your ability as a German speaker. Here are five tips to get you on your way. 1. Start with “Why?” This is especially important for adults who are just starting to learn a language. Be very clear about why you want to learn. Is it to be able to navigate common situations, like grocery store shopping or calling in take-out pizza orders? Is it simply to be able to say hello to your neighbors in the hopes that you can someday start a

conversation with them? Or would you like to master the language? Keep the reasons for — and the benefits of — learning German at the top of your mind. If you’re clear about why this is important to you, it is much more probable that you will stick with it. 2. Find a partner Learning a language is like getting in shape. If you have a partner, you’re far likelier to accomplish your goals. Buddies can keep you motivated when you’re not feeling like it, and they can help you give you gentle nudges when you need to keep moving. As a bonus, you’ve also got someone with whom you can practice. Even better: find a native German speaker who will chat with you regularly. You’ll never be in a better location to do so. 3. Find a language app that works for you There are several online options that are great for beginners and experts alike. For Americans living in Germany, here are some ideas: Army MWR libraries in Europe offers an excellent and comprehensive program through Mango. Using this free online resource can be very useful.

There is no shortage of free online apps that can be used via mobile or in a desktop environment. Popular choices include Memrise, DuoLingo or Babbel. These can be especially useful for learning or reviewing the basics. Online courses can occasionally be available through organizations that traditionally offer in-person classes. For example, the Kaiserslautern Kreisvolkshochschule often offers online beginner courses. Ask around at your installation, as well. 4. Put in the time Once you’ve got goals, a partner (or a sense of adventure), and a way to learn, it is important to put in the time. Consistency is often more important than volume: for example, 10 minutes a day every day will take you further than one hour a couple of times a week. Find a way to make sure you’re putting in the time, even if it’s something as simple as a putting a daily checkmark on your calendar.

5. Put your pride aside This is so important, especially for adults. Don’t worry about looking (or sounding) like a fool. It’s the only way forward. So try what you learn as often as you can, especially with local citizens (remember, you live in Germany!). Start small, with greetings and basic phrases. Learn to ask, “Sprechen Sie Englisch?” before saying anything else. If someone says yes, you’ll know you’ve got a safe audience with whom to speak German. The more you use your language skills, the faster you’ll improve!

HESSENPARK from Page 1 Frankfurt am Main. Unfortunately it took some big hits during the war and though there are still a few cobble-stoned towns left, the main part of history that’s on display here is post war architectural atrocities. But fear not, Hessenpark exists to not only bring history back to life but bring you and your family a fun day out. Highlights include live animals, actors in period clothing, 104 cozy timber-framed buildings, lakes, a windmill, countless exhibitions and, of course, onsite restaurants. The park is separated into 7 geographical parts that could be viewed as tiny villages with no more than a few houses and often a church each. The market square alone, which can be seen on the cover photo, houses a pharmacy, a shop, two traditional pubs, a restaurant, a bakery and much more. A round trip will take you from the north of Hessen to the very south and everything in between before you get back to the market square for a hearty meal and a Frankfurt Apple Wine (like cider), beer or a glass of regional wine. A constantly changing selection of live demonstrations teaches visitors about life in the countryside. The houses and buildings are not only pretty to look at but almost all of them contain little exhibitions on different topics. From the making of clothes to agricultural challenges, family life, religion, a blacksmith shop, a grocer and so much more.

Animals Not only history is alive at Hessenpark. (Didn’t think I’d make another living history pun, huh?) A number of animals such as geese, chickens, goats, cattle and pigs await in species-appropriate enclosures. My favorite were definitely the baby piglets that were frolicking through the mud despite the cold temperatures. Opening hours and admission prices: Admission costs €9 per adult and only €1 per child or student. Children under 5 get in for free. Dogs are allowed in and cost €1 each. They are not allowed to go into the buildings. Between November 1 and February 28, the park is only open on weekends and holidays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Between March 1 and October 31, the park is open daily from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. The map (pictured right) makes it look a bit bigger than it feels. The red round trip route is certainly doable if you calculated half a day at the park including going inside the buildings and enjoying an extended lunch break. Getting there By car: Free parking is available on site. There are plenty of signs on the A5 and beyond to guide you there. It’s a circa 1.5-hour drive from the KMC, 45 minutes from Wiesbaden and under 2.5 hours from Stuttgart.
