Airmen receive initial COVID-19 vaccine

After a long and daunting year, the initial shipment of COVID-19 vaccines mark what infectious disease experts predict will be a turning point in the pandemic.

Medical logistics Airmen worked late into the evening Dec. 30 transporting vaccines to a coldstorage facility. Initial quantities are limited and will be distributed on a rolling delivery basis as more vaccines become available.

In accordance with Department of Defense guidelines, Ramstein’s vaccine distribution is following a phased approach, with initial doses offered to Airmen operating on the frontlines of the pandemic.

New year, new due

by Kelly Sanders 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs The financial boost Ramstein Airmen and Air Force civilians received in recent paychecks will be one more thing left behind in 2020.

To ease financial strain caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, a presidential memo signed Aug. 8, 2020, authorized the Defense Finance and Accounting Service to temporarily pause the 6.2% Social Security Tax withholdings from September to December.

Air Force senior leaders were quick to advise personnel not to treat this as “free

money” as the tax collector would eventually come knocking.

“Bottom line: The extra money we will get over the next few months will be paid back next year. Leaders — make sure your Airmen and families are tracking to prevent financial strain in the future,” said Chief Master Sergeant of the Air Force JoAnne S. Bass in a September Facebook post.

As warned, repayment of last year’s deferred taxes begins this month in addition to reinstating Social Security tax withholdings for 2021. A recently-passed Consolidated Appropriations Act helps alle-

viate some money woes by spreading payments over the course of the year versus the original due date of April 30.

The longer repayment period equates to smaller portions deducted per pay period.

Members do not need to take any action to repay the deferred taxes as it automatically comes out of paychecks.

According to DFAS, military members and civilians can see their deferred tax collection and remaining balance on their myPay Leave and Earnings Statement.

“We highly encouraged personnel to exercise financial responsibility,” said Angie

Fields, 86th Force Support Squadron community readiness consultant. “Still, we understand that it can be difficult to set money aside amid the pandemic and holiday spending season.”

For anyone struggling to understand the tax repayment or needing assistance to get finances in order, Ramstein’s Airman and Family Readiness Center is here to help.

“We offer several free education classes for personnel and their families. From January to March, classes include Developing a Spending Plan, Raising Financially Fit Children, The Basics of Credit

Reports and Scores, and Saving and Investing,” said Fields. “We also offer oneon-one appointments to help answer questions on financial planning.”

A lesson many families learned last year is the importance of preparing for the unexpected. It never hurts to have extra money saved for a rainy day, or as was the case in 2020, a global pandemic.

Money issues can cause personal or marriage problems and even impact security clearances. Learning to manage money pays dividends and there’s no better time than the present.

“The health of our community remains our top priority,” said Brig. Gen. Josh Olson, 86th Airlift Wing commander. “This vaccine is a critical addition to current public health measures. It’s a critical step on the path to end the pandemic. We encourage all eligible personnel to receive the vaccine, when it is offered. This will both protect the community and preserve our ability to accomplish the mission.”

Col. (Dr.) Ryan Mihata, 86th Medical Group commander and guiding force during the pandemic, eagerly rolled up his sleeve for his initial dose.

“I’m not getting vaccinated only for my own benefit,” said Mihata.

“This is a way to help protect my daughter, my wife, my wingmen, and most importantly, our patients in high-risk categories.”

Ramstein’s Medical Clinic is one of 28 military treatment facilities in Europe that will receive initial shipments of the vaccine.

As the gateway to the world, Ramstein has a critical aeromedical evacuation mission. The base is home to the 86th Aeromedical Evacuation Squadron and the 10th Expeditionary Aeromedical Evacuation Flight. Both AE units triage, treat and transport wounded or ill service members to medical treatment centers. This team has

transported hundreds of COVID patients since the beginning of the pandemic. Ramstein is also home to one of the largest groups of first responders in the Air Force.

Administering the vaccines to Ramstein’s huge population will be a monumental task for the 86th MDG over the next several months, requiring extensive manpower to administer the doses and annotate each member’s records. The vaccine requires two doses per person, separated by about four weeks between doses. The Medical Clinic will need to redirect manpower from other sections within the clinic, which may result in a reduction in availability for routine medical care, Mihata said.

When the time comes for the larger distribution of the vaccine to the healthy population, all eligible personnel are encouraged to take the vaccine to contribute to lowering the public health risks associated with the COVID-19 pandemic.

“I highly recommend that anyone eligible for the vaccine go ahead and get it,” urges Mihata.

“Physical distancing and face coverings will still be required, but this extra layer of protection is one of the most advanced tools we have to help us navigate our way back to normal.”

When on you are on Leave or Extended TDY If you will be absent from your on-base home, leaving it unoccupied for extended periods (over 14 days), you are required to make arrangements for security, prudent care, and periodic inspections of your assigned areas. Liability for Damage to Military Family Housing, Equipment and Furnishings Under Federal law (10 U.S.C 2775), as amended by the FY85 Military Construction Authorization Act, members of the armed forces occupying family housing shall be held liable and accountable for loss or damage to family housing, associated equipment or furnishings caused by the abuse or negligence of the member, the member’s dependents, or the members guest(s).

In cases of simple negligence, the amount of liability is limited to one month’s basic pay (in most cases). If there is willful misconduct or abuse, the responsible member will be held liable for the full amount of damages.

Insurance While occupying family housing, you

may want to consider purchasing commercial insurance for protection in cases of a major loss. Such insurance should specify clearly that personal liability coverage for loss of damage involving government quarters, furnishings and equipment is included. ALWAYS READY from Page 1 airborne and proving this concept and capability for EUCOM.” Operations such as these are historically placed within the Air Mobility Command, specifically at Joint Base Charleston, South Carolina. The initial force training was only conducted there for the entire Air Force, which would then piece together teams to send on deployments to provide this capability operationally.

In July, however, AMC started a flagship initiative to send certified trainers to Ramstein Air Base to certify 86th Medical Group and 86th AES personnel to be the initial cadre on the NPC. This established an organic capability located overseas, therefore widening the pool of certified personnel to the force, said Maj. Josh Williams, 86th AES operations flight commander.

From the 721st Aerial Port Squadron loading the NPC-L onto the aircraft to the 86th MDG and 86th AES infectious disease team ensuring proper personal protective equipment was worn during each scenario, multiple units were called upon to contribute to the training.

“The training was for developing another force package for the 86th AW, to enable us to move COVID-positive patients utilizing the NPC-L,” Pilger said. “The force package entails members from the 86th MDG, the 86th AES and additional folks over at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center, such as our Critical Care Air Transport Team.”

The NPC-L is a smaller version of the Negatively Pressurized

Conex, an isolated containment chamber intended to transport individuals with infectious diseases like COVID-19. While the NPC is used on C-17 Globemaster III aircraft, the NPC-L was developed for use on a C-130J. “Pursuant to a U.S. Transportation Command joint urgent operational need request, (the NPC) was fielded, and the follow-on to that was the NPC-L,” Williams said. “That is what we’ve now developed our teams and force packages within the 86th AW to support. (The NPC) is actually loadable on a C-130 and can transport patients in EUCOM, as well as U.S. Africa Command.”

Up to nine ambulatory patients, four litter patients, two CCATT critical care patients, or variations thereof, can be transported in the NPC-L. During the training, Airmen were presented with various patient transfer scenarios and worked together to execute the mission both on-ground and in-flight.

“It was a true team sport throughout the whole thing,” said Capt. Zachary Gooch, 86th AES operations support flight commander. “We could not have done it without the support from Air Terminal Operations Center, maintenance or the medical group.”

Having this organic capability enables Ramstein to provide COVID-19 patient movement overseas without the need for assets deployed from AMC. “I think we proved that this can be done without having a deployed asset that rolls in and sets up shop,” Gooch said. “We did it, basically, from grassroots.”

Story and photos by Airman 1st Class Taylor D. Slater 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs With flight times, delays, and seating arrangements, travel by plane can be a monumental task to manage on its own. Add a global pandemic and one may just burst under the strain.

Fortunately, the Airmen of the 721st Aerial Port Squadron are here to help.

Since March, members of the 721st APS have worked tirelessly at the Ramstein Passenger Terminal to make sure the mission continues, and that their patrons and employees are kept safe from exposure to COVID-19.

The initial experience of COVID19 at the terminal was described as “very fluid,” according to Tech. Sgt. Brandon Mabee, 721st APS noncommissioned officer in charge of passenger services.

“As we get information and implement a process, something else happens and it changes,” Mabee said. “Anything that we were doing today could be different by the end of the day.”

Managing the COVID-19 guidelines of various countries was a steep challenge for the terminal because different countries had different requirements for border entry. Coordinating those requirements with the Department of Defense’s stop movement order and host nation guidance made for a difficult but rewarding challenge for Mabee.

“Having to work out everything on the fly was crazy because this was a real-life scenario, making me as an NCO think logically about how I could solve the problem without infecting or cross-contaminating people,” Mabee said. “It was stressful but fun.”

Despite the lifting of the stop movement in May, Mabee emphasized that many of its rules are still in effect with space available travel limited to travelers with emergency leave or exceptions to policy.

The terminal also established new rules as the pandemic progressed. Tape was placed in queues to mark social distancing guides and hand sanitizer stations were installed. Patrons must wear face coverings and undergo a brief screening process before entering the building.

“Please be ready to wear your (face covering) from the moment you enter this terminal all the way until you leave the building at your destination,” Mabee said. “There have been a few cases where people caused issues, and they could have been removed from their flight and placed on a no-fly list for a period of time.”

taken to increase passenger safety, the terminal also helped ensure the health of their employees. Airmen from the 721st APS split into minimal manning shifts to mitigate exposure. In addition, night shift Airmen sanitize the terminal every night to keep people safe.

“It’s been a learning process for us,” Mabee said.

What makes Staff Sgt. Domingo Gutierrez’s, 721st APS passenger services supervisor, job enjoyable despite the challenge is guiding his Airmen through COVID-19 and showing them how important their position is.

“A lot of people go throughout their day and think, ‘Oh I’m just signing up passengers,’” Gutierrez said. “But then they see life come into someone’s eyes when they learn they can get on their flight and see their family members in critical care,” Guittierez said.

“These are real-life struggles and

this is how you impact the mission.”

Mabee saw a silver lining in witnessing various units come together to combat the COVID-19 crisis. “(We recognized), ‘Okay, this sucks, but we’re going to get through it,’” Mabee said.

Update on COVID-19, Influenza Vaccines

by Col. (Dr.) Ryan Mihata 86th Medical Group Commander Happy New Year! I am excited that COVID-19 vaccinations began this week with the first group of first responders including Defenders, firefighters and medics. Also included in this eligible group were aeromedical evacuation medics assigned to the 86th Aeromedical Evacuation Squadron and the 10th Expeditionary Aeromedical Evacuation Flight.

These amazing professionals have already transported hundreds of COVID patients throughout the pandemic.

As promised, I was in line behind the frontline medics in this first phase of COVID vaccination.

After receiving the shot Monday, so far nothing out of the ordinary to report. My shoulder is a little sore, similar to other inoculations, but it actually feels less sore than when I get the influenza shot.

The vaccine is a crucial step to finding normalcy. Despite current lockdown restrictions in Germany, numbers are still up across the country. The Kaiserslautern community is 114-127 cases per 100,000 population in the last 7 days. Based on these continued elevated case counts in our host nation, it is not surprising that German government officials met on Tuesday to discuss an extension of the lockdown. In the United States, case numbers continue to remain elevated as well. Over 1.3 million new cases in the last week with more than 2,000 deaths a day. To date, 328,000 Americans have lost their lives to COVID.

This is more than combat casualties from World War I, Korea, and Vietnam combined. I fear we will soon match the number of U.S. lives lost in World War II (just over 400,000). To find more information about the vaccine, visit: https://www.ramstein.af.mil/ COVID-19-Vaccine-Information/.

On the influenza front, we expect an additional shipment of vaccine this week! The team is planning options to deliver both vaccines simultaneously. We hope to collaborate with our Landstuhl

86 Operations Support Squadron: Always at our best, train for the worst

The 86th Operations Support Squadron maintains a C-130J Super Hercules aircraft flight simulator that provides U.S. Air Force pilots the necessary training to be qualified flyers who can successfully implement the mission in any scenario.

“The flight simulator is used to

train the entire aircrew,” said Capt.

Caitlin Teresky, 86th OSS flight commander. “It helps us maintain our standard proficiencies while allowing us to simulate high-risk events and emergencies that we normally wouldn’t want to experience in real life, but that we need to be prepared to react to.”

U.S. Air Force pilots can mentally prepare for in-flight emergencies by practicing flying during engine failures, low visibility or sudden high winds in a simulated environment, enabling them to increase the likelihood of their countermeasures.

scenarios you have to work together as a crew, so the flight simulator allows us to do that in a low-risk environment,” Teresky said.

While in the flight simulator, pilots can practice landings, takeoffs, touchdowns and respond to changes in weather and whatever threats are deemed necessary to be prepared for.

“The things you rarely see, you rarely remember,” said Brandon Cowell, 86th OSS C-130J Super Hercules aircraft flight simulator site manager, and lead pilot.

“We put Airmen in situations that make them think, and that they don't normally find themselves in.

Aircrews react better in real life the more extreme scale situations they encounter in the simulator.”

Cowell believes that flight simulators are also a safe haven for pilots.

“As pilots out there on the line, you have a tendency sometimes to get bogged down in other things than flying, such as administrative responsibilities, especially the higher you go up in the officer ranks,” Cowell said. “The flight simulator allows seasoned pilots to refresh themselves on their craft in order to confidently train and maintain vital skills for newer pilots.”

With the simulator actually mimicking the turbulence and overall motion of a real C-130J Super Hercules aircraft, the 86th OSS’s flight simulator instructors can create real-time conditions during training, such as day or night settings, and inclement weather.

“The flight simulator gives us the ability to train 20 hours a day, 7 days a week. This gives us incredible flexibility to create training environments as needed,” Teresky said.

Among the many other advantages, the flight simulator can immerse pilots into thousands of airfields around the world, ultimately giving them the necessary tools and familiarity to take off and land anywhere around the globe.

“Having a simulator on site is a game-changer, it really builds the confidence of our Airmen to be effective pilots,” Cowell said. “It also cuts down the need to send aircrews to the U.S., which saves a lot of money for the U.S. Air Force as well, especially now with quarantine policies for COVID19. We’ve never slowed down our training during this pandemic, but we’ve been overly cautious with our mitigation techniques.”

To help mitigate the spread of COVID-19, everyone entering the facility is required to wear a mask, even while training on the simulator. It is then thoroughly cleaned after each use. The instructors also conduct temperature checks for all aircrew entering the facility.

It’s estimated that having the flight simulator at Ramstein saves the U.S. Air Force approximately $500,000 in travel expenses and $3 million in fuel annually.

“We stood up a program to support the unit’s budget,” Dailey said. “This is actually the first time our group has done this, and we were able to pull a lot of stuff out of the (Defense Logistics Agency).

lot of the stuff we need and would like to have out of it.”

When he’s not coming up with ways to improve processes, Dailey is teaching his wingmen.

“I love getting the opportunity to teach,” Dailey said. “I really enjoy troubleshooting and getting right into the details of the problem with them. What’s rewarding is spending time with the Airmen, putting all that effort into them and seeing them succeed.”

Dailey doesn’t just help out his colleagues. In his spare time he enjoys producing music for his friends.

“I like to produce everything and anything,” Dailey said. “I play guitar as well, and hard rock is

my background, but I’ve delved into mixing a lot of stuff. I just finished mixing a hip-hop album for a friend.”

“When I was an Airman I deployed a lot,” Dailey said.

“Mixing music was a great hobby then because I could just break out my guitar and laptop, and it was a good way to keep myself distracted.”

interest in music, he also has a mechanical aptitude and he decided to put his interests to work for his country during a pivotal time in U.S. history.

“I’ve always been a tinkerer,” Dailey said. “I loved building little motors when I was a kid, so I’ve always had some technical skill. I was in college briefly, and I was going the ROTC route, but then 9/11 happened. I enlisted and took the first job they offered me, and maintenance is where I ended up.”

Dailey may be seen by some as

a quiet and reserved person, but what he does for his unit does not go unnoticed.

“He leads from the top to the bottom,” said U.S. Air Force Master Sgt. Anthony Molina, 86th AMXS lead production superintendent.

“He develops his Airmen and invests and finds time for everyone whether it’s a (senior noncommissioned officer) or a lower ranking Airman. He is the best (subject matter expert) I have. He is so smart and so humble, and I am proud to serve alongside him.”

A native of Nigeria, Gabisum’s first experience with the American way of life came after being selected for participation in a foreign exchange student program in the late 2000s. Following selection, Gabisum, only 15 years old at the time, travelled across the world to the U.S. state of Iowa.

“I stayed with a host family in Milford, Iowa, for one year and returned to Nigeria,” explained Gabisum. “After a year, and with the help of the family I stayed with, I returned back to the U.S. to go to college.”

After two years of college education, and becoming a naturalized U.S. citizen, Gabisum felt the need to give back to the U.S. in return for the opportunities afforded to him, so he enlisted in the U.S. Army.

“I wasn't quite sure what I wanted to do (following school).

I was always interested in the military growing up so I felt serving the country would be a good way to kind of like pay back,” said Gabisum, now a sergeant in the Army. “Initially I was just going to do four years but after the four years were up I reenlisted.”

Gabisum, 28, now serves as the noncommissioned officer in charge,

Family Medicine Clinic, Landstuhl Regional Medical Center, and says he appreciates the opportunities service in the Army has presented to him, demonstrated by his work ethic and performance as a health care specialist and a Soldier. “(Gabisum) contributes to the clinic by ensuring all the medics are ready to complete the mission at all times,” said U.S. Air Force Tech Sgt. Jose De Jesus, Gabisum’s supervisor.

As an Air Force supervisor in an Army-commanded Military Treatment Facility, De Jesus explains the value Gabisum has brought to the team and the assistance he has provided De Jesus. “(Gabisum) assists me with all Army-related tasks and administrative duties and has helped me understand the Army process. Without him my job would have been extremely difficult,” says De Jesus.

Gabisum’s commitment to service was further demonstrated this year as COVID-19 response efforts took effect at LRMC, activating unprecedented operations and introducing restrictions some Soldiers had never experienced before. According to De Jesus, Gabisum continued to lead

by example during the pandemic, ensuring Soldiers continued doing what was required of them.

“His calmness can be contagious,” explains De Jesus. “As a leader, he’s continuously engaged with his Soldiers and cares about their careers. He understands that he becomes better by making his Soldiers better with him.”

Recently, Gabisum earned the title of Best Warrior for Regional Health Command Europe, an annual competition which pits Soldiers against each other during multiple warrior tasks, tests and oral assessments. Gabisum credits the opportunities he’s had in the Army for the drive he maintains, both in the clinical setting and on the battlefield.

“I feel it's important for a Soldier to continue to push themselves further and find opportunities. We all have potential but unless we apply ourselves and try to see how much better we can be, we're never going to know,” explained Gabisum. “At the end of the day, all these competitions is also training, you learn stuff. You're not always going to win every competition but it forces you to learn and you become a better Soldier.”

Airman enhances care through innovation

Over the past several months, COVID-19 has transformed business practices, social gatherings and patient care processes. While many of these changes are an expansion of technology to continue the lifestyles we are accustomed to, innovation has proven critical.

Only weeks after arriving at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center, and less than a year after enlisting in the U.S. Air Force, Airman 1st Class Tara Somers, a medical technician at LRMC’s Internal Medicine Clinic, found herself with the opportunity to help shape response efforts to COVID-19.

Somers, a native of Salisbury, Maryland, was handpicked from her peers to develop an Upper Respiratory Infection (URI) Clinic within the Internal Medicine Clinic patient population, some of which include high-risk patients.

“Somers has truly taken this task head-on and poured her heart into it,” said U.S. Air Force Tech.

Sgt. Hilary Sellar, noncommissioned officer in charge, Internal Medicine Clinic. “She designed a 24-step algorithm for staff to use when patients call the clinic with an URI or COVID-19 symptoms.”

In addition to outlining how staff would respond to potential COVID-19 patients, Somers, 22, also authored a telephone script, how-to-guide, and initiated a patient tracker for use in the clinic. Somers’ innovative efforts also help differentiate patients with URIs, commonly referred to as the common cold, and potential COVID-19 patients. “(The process) also provides more complete care to our patients and makes them feel like they are being prioritized when they are feeling afraid in the middle of the pandemic,” said Somers. “I am the only technician in the clinic specifically taking on the task.

This allows me to follow providers more closely, obtain more knowledge and understanding about the pandemic and the medical threats it presents to our patient population.”

The algorithm specifies what staff members should do from first contact with patients, whether in person or telephone, through patient admission or disposition if necessary.

According to Sellar, as the main clinic touchpoint, Somers’ contributions don’t stop inside the clinic but also extend to ease their patient experiences through efforts such as contacting patients with test results, assisting with followup care and delivering prescriptions to patients in their vehicles to

avoid unnecessary exposure.

“I love the fact that I am the ‘go-to’ for our clinic,” explains Somers. “When other providers, nurses, techs, or even patients have concerns, it feels good to know they have enough confidence in me

to reach out for the answers and correct information or guidance.”

Although she is only beginning her military career, Somers’ ambition drives her to continue education toward a nursing degree, in hopes of increased responsibility

and impact in patient care.

“Somers demonstrates knowledge, leadership and selfless service above her grade, and moreover, a true dedication to our patients and LRMC staff,” said Sellar.

USAG RP Army Emergency Relief ready to start new year

by Keith Pannell U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz Army Emergency Relief is a private, 501 (c)(3) nonprofit organization that was created to provide funds to help Soldiers with unexpected immediate financial needs like rent, utilities, emergency travel, and more.

This year marks the 78th year AER has been helping Soldiers and their families.

“Army Emergency Relief is the Army's only non-profit organization that provides interest-free loans, grants, loan/grant combinations and scholarships for active duty, retirees and their families,” said Paul Collins, U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz AER officer.

Some people get AER confused with the Combined Federal Campaign, which allows service members to donate to any number of organizations. While both are worthy of donations, there is a difference.

will run March-May through unit representatives and social media.

“The campaign will bring awareness to the programs available through Army Emergency Relief in addition to seeking campaign donations in order to continue to serve the needs of Soldiers and families where they serve,” said Monica Teel, USAG RP Army Community Service Financial Readiness Program supervisor.

Although the AER campaign is projected to occur March through May 2021, unit representatives will start their training as early as January.

“AER is a single, non-profit financial assistance organization, with 90 cents of every dollar donated going to assist Soldiers and their families,” Collins said. “AER is intended to be a Soldier's first choice in requesting emergency financial assistance.”

In 2019, AER provided $70 million in the form of interestfree loans and grants to 40,000 families across the U.S. Army, according to the AER web site at

www.armyemergencyrelief.org.

However, AER cannot provide financial assistance for every financial emergency a Soldier or their family may face. Limitations include debt consolidation, legal fees, home improvement projects or the financing of ordinary leave or vacation.

“Most of our assistance cases go for car repair, utilities, rent, and emergency travel. One case, for example, was an interest-free loan provided to a married, junior enlisted Soldier who had approved leave to attend their spouse's grandfather's funeral,” Collins said.

AER has made changes to some of their policies to support Soldiers and their families currently impacted by COVID-19.

One change in particular is the Home School and Remote Education Assistance Program.

This program assists Army families with the costs of home school and virtual or distance learning education supplies and equipment, providing up to $1,500 in the form

of loans, grants or a combination of both related to the unexpected expenses incurred as a result of the transition from classroom to a virtual setting.

AER also provides emergency funds to Soldiers' orphans and surviving spouses, and offers undergraduate scholarships to spouses and children of both active and retired Soldiers.

Soldiers, regardless of rank, can start their application process by contacting ACS at either the Kaiserslautern or Baumholder ACS front desk for an application

packet using the direct access program. However, if a Soldier has less than one year on duty they will need a recommendation from their chain of command before their application can be approved.

Shopping beyond the military base

by MilitaryInGermany.com Perhaps you have just arrived or even been in Germany for a while, and you would like to venture beyond the Commissary and the Army and Air Force Exchange Service (AAFES). However, you do not know where to begin or where to go. Well we are here to help you get started on your shopping journey beyond the gate guards! Below, you will find information on popular grocery and drugstores as well as hardware stores.

Grocery Stores Let’s first head to the grocery store. Depending on which part of the United States you are from, you may be familiar with Wal-Mart Megastore, Publix, Piggly Wiggly, County Market, Food City, Safeway, Whole Foods, Arlan’s Market, Giant Food, Kroger, and many many more. If you are looking for grocery stores in Germany, then look out for Aldi, Lidl, Netto, Penny, Edeka, Globus, Real, and others.

Although German grocery stores may be a little smaller and have fewer items than what you are used to in the U.S., you will find all your necessities such as food items (fruits & vegetables, dairy products, meats, breads, canned goods, frozen goods, organic products, snack foods, etc); beverages (including alcoholic drinks); cleaning products; paper products; health products (lotion, shampoo, etc.); sanitary products, baby products, and much more. Additionally, many of the German stores offer their own

brand goods at a cheaper price than the well-known brand products.

You will find some unexpected non-food items at a German grocery store that you would not typically find back home. For example, have you ever thought about buying a bicycle or a computer at a Piggly Wiggly or a Publix? Well, you can sometimes find these items at a discount store like Aldi or Lidl.

Some non-food items may include pots and pans, electronic devices, appliances, clothing, sports and leisure goods, school and office equipment, crafts and gardening goods, toys, magazines and newspapers, DVDs and other items.

Because German bakeries are essential to its people’s way of life, it is not surprising to find a bakery located in all German grocery stores, offering fresh bread, pastries and more. You can also find a fresh meat, seafood and cheese sections in larger stores such as Edeka and Real, but they may not

be available in discount stores such as Lidl or Penny.

One of the first things you will probably notice that is different about German stores is the shopping cart. In Germany you will need a coin (usually a 50 cent, 1 or 2 euro coin) in order to use it. You just simply place the coin in the slot to release the chain that is connected to the other carts. And when you finish using the cart, replace the chain to get your money back. Carts can be found outside in the parking lot or in the front of the store.

Other things that you may find different are the following: the cashiers are sitting; you must bag your own items and take them outside as there are no baggers; and you must pay for your own bags.

If you are wanting to use a (U.S. or German) credit card or a debit card, it is best to ask the staff before purchasing because some smaller stores like bakeries, stores accept cash only, but this is changing more and more.

Their range can be divided into four areas: remedy (teas and essences); beauty and wellness (body care and skin care products, fragrances, essential oils, cosmetics, etc.); organic health foods; and products for house and garden maintenance.

Pharmacies What you will not find at a German drugstore is a pharmacy or a pharmacist. For prescription medication, you must go to an “Apotheke.” This word translates to pharmacy. And how do know when you are at or near an Apotheke? You will see a large red color “A” with the shape of a glass inside. Additionally, it is worth noting that many of the pharmacists (Apotheker) speak English.

Hardware stores Are you thinking about adding a deck to your backyard or redesigning a room in your apartment? Are you a “Do-It-Yourself” kind of person? What probably comes to mind back home would be Home Depot, Ace Hardware or HomeBase. Here in Germany a few large hardware chains are Toom Baummarkt, Obi, and Hornbach.

Get your DIY juices flowing by selecting various items including: building materials; build and technology; garden and outdoor; grills and grill accessories; living and design; plumbing and installation; bad and sanitary; flooring and tiles; paint and wallpaper; heating, air conditioning and ventilation; kitchen; lights and electrics; machine tools and workshop; awnings and sun protection; zoo and aquarium, etc. The list goes on!

For more than 70 years, the Airmen assigned to U.S. Air Forces in Europe and Air Forces Africa have found ways to adapt, innovate and excel in a rapidly changing warfare environment.

Operations and innovations to combat COVID-19 As the COVID-19 pandemic began, Airmen across USAFE–

AFAFRICA provided aid to their fellow Airmen, NATO allies, and partners across Europe and Africa.

In March, Airmen from the 86th Airlift Wing at Ramstein Air Base, provided essential support to the Italian Ministry of Defense when they transported an En-Route Patient Staging System, capable of supporting 40 patients in 24 hours, to Aviano Air Base, Italy.

In an article highlighting the mission, Gen. Jeff Harrigian, USAFE–AFAFRICA commander, stated: “This effort demonstrates our mutual support as we team together in response to this public health crisis. We are working closely with our Italian friends, the Department of State, and U.S. European Command to ensure we provide the right equipment in a safe and timely manner. It’s our privilege to support the Italian response, and our continued commitment reflects the values of the American people to provide assistance whenever and wherever it is needed.”

The next month Airmen delivered approximately 4,000 pounds of medical supplies to the government of Ghana. The supplies, provided by the Naval Medical Research

Unit Three-Ghana Detachment, experienced delays due to logistical disruptions caused by the COVID19 pandemic until Airmen from the 100th Air Refueling Wing, RAF Mildenhall, England, and the 86th AW stepped in to provide critical transportation.

Large force exercises In late May, four USAFE– AFAFRICA units and multiple NATO assets supported the first large force exercise during the COVID-19 pandemic. The LFE took place within North Sea airspace and involved U.S. Air Force F-15E Strike Eagles assigned to the 48th Fighter Wing, RAF Lakenheath, England; F-16C Fighting Falcons assigned to the 31st FW, Aviano AB, Italy; F-16Cs assigned to the 52nd FW, Spangdahlem AB, Germany; KC-135 Stratotankers assigned to the 100th ARW; and NATO E-3 Sentry, or AWACS, from Geilenkirchen AB, Germany.

In September, more than 50 aircraft from the U.S. Air Force, the U.S. Marine Corps, the Royal Air Force and the Royal Netherlands Air Force participated in exercise Point Blank 20-04 over the North Sea. The recurring exercise strengthens interoperability, combat readiness and regional security as well as deters adversaries.

First-time integrations and accomplishments USAFE–AFAFRICA operates in over 19 million square miles across three continents and in this vast area of responsibility our Airmen accomplished historic first-time missions.

Missouri, over the North Sea on March 18. The integration of fifth generation capabilities sharpened capabilities and interoperability for the future of airpower.

Also for the first time, U.S. Air Force and Ukrainian aircraft integrated as part of a long-range, long-duration strategic bomber mission throughout Europe and the Black Sea region on May 29.

B-1B Lancers from the 28th BW, Ellsworth AFB, South Dakota, trained with Ukrainian Su-27 Flankers and MiG-29 Fulcrums to strengthen the relationships necessary to combat today’s dynamic global challenges.

On Aug. 28, the single-day mission Allied Sky demonstrated our commitment to readiness and the security of NATO airspace. While supporting Bomber Task Force Europe missions, six U.S. Air Force B-52 Stratofortress strategic bombers flew over all 30 NATO nations in both Europe and North America. The mission included integration with aircraft from several NATO nations.

Enhancing relationships with African partner nations In September, U.S. Air Force B-52s integrated with the air forces of two African nations while supporting a Bomber Task Force mission. The first was a one-day interoperability mission with four Moroccan F-16s and a demonstration of maritime interoperability with the USS Roosevelt (DDG 80).

The next day, U.S. Air Force B-52s integrated with Tunisian F-5s over the Mediterranean Sea. In addition to the operations and exercises that occurred in the air and on the ground, dedication to combined cooperation and regional security was present at the highest levels. Harrigian hosted the first virtual Executive African Partnership Flight conference with Air Chiefs from multiple African countries, where leaders were able to discuss

current operations and engagements of their air forces along with future training events focused on ensuring the security of the region.

All domain command and control In 2020, Airmen continued to train and operate with their fellow service members across branches.

In July, aircraft assigned to the 31st FW, the 100th ARW and the 52nd Expeditionary Operations Group Detachment 2, Miroslawiec Air Base, Poland, participated in a mission in international airspace and waters within the Black Sea region alongside assets from U.S. Naval Forces Europe, U.S. Special Operations Command Europe and U.S. Space Command.

The mission utilized Joint Air-toSurface Missile cruise missile tactics training scenarios.

USAFE-AFAFRICA assets also participated in a Joint All-Domain Command and Control event in November with assets from NAVEUR, U.S. Army Europe and Africa and SOCEUR. The joint exercise was in

international waters and airspace around the Black and Baltic Seas, training U.S. forces to integrate, operate and communicate while executing all-domain targeting operations in any arena.

Combat airpower will always be provided on demand Across domains and continents, USAFE–AFAFRICA has constantly demonstrated commitment to the security of the region and to the relationships that protect it.

In 2020, USAFE–AFAFRICA Airmen overcame challenges as they adapted, innovated and excelled on the ground and in the air. In 2021, the force will only continue to grow stronger, more lethal and ready.

“We are the world's most capable Air Force and alliance because of our people,” said Harrigian. “We will take care of our people while we continue to accomplish the mission, in any environment, no matter how great the challenge."

Air Force rolls out GO Inspire program to increase diversity, attract future leaders Story and photo by Master Sgt. Chance Babin Air Force Recruiting Service Public Affairs Air Force Recruiting Service announced the establishment of a program designed to increase diversity in ranks of the two services while attracting the next generation of Airmen and Guardians.

The program dubbed “GO Inspire” began Jan. 1 and rallies general officers to hit the streets with teams of top Airmen and Guardians to inform, influence and inspire young Americans for military service.

“Increasing diversity and attracting the best talent across our Air and Space Forces is a warfighting imperative for our nation, and as such, general officer leadership is critical,” wrote Secretary of the Air Force Barbara Barrett, Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. Charles Q. Brown, Jr., and Chief of Space Operations Gen. Jay Raymond in a memo directing the program.

GO Inspire, with “GO” standing for general officer, is specifically designed for Air and Space Force generals to get out and engage youth and youth influencers from underrepresented groups, or URGs, across the nation. The goal, according to AFRS leadership, is to increase the diversity of its applicant pool in the rated and space communities, as well as the broader Air and Space Forces.

Officials from both services believe that early engagement is key to more diverse leaders in the future.

“We must embrace a culture where every general officer is a recruiter,” the three leaders wrote.

“In order to ensure our future force is ready, lethal and reflective of the society which we serve, we must better engage our communities. The responsibility to inspire, engage and recruit the next generation of Air and Space Force professionals starts with senior leaders.”

While the focus of the program is increasing community and youth engagement by the two services’ top leadership, the department is banking on the support team that will accompany the senior leaders to help inspire the younger generation.

“The program is as much about the young, sharp Airmen and Guardians our senior leaders take with them to school and community visits than it is about having a general show up and talk about service in the Air or Space Force,” said the department’s top recruiter, Maj. Gen. Ed Thomas, AFRS commander.

Thomas said the intent of the GO Inspire program is for every youth to have an opportunity to connect with someone they can identify with. That may be based on race or gender but it could also be where they grew up or simply finding someone who’s accomplished their dream.

“GO Inspire gets after this by asking general officers to develop a diverse team of individuals to attend their outreach events with them,” Thomas said. “AFRS’s Aviation Inspiration Mentorship (AIM) team is an asset that GO’s can request to bring with them on their outreach events. AIM members are rated officers trained in youth outreach and how to inform, influence, and inspire.”

The GO Inspire was in many ways motivated by the Air Force chief of staff’s Rated Diversity Improvement initiative tasker to develop a program for Air and Space Force general officers to seek out, when appropriate, and conduct outreach engagements.

The goal of GO Inspire is to connect general officers to identified AFRS needs and opportunities that will further attract and recruit high-quality youth from across America.

“GO Inspire is designed to drive a culture change in the Air and Space Forces. Our department leadership has a vision that all general officers would embrace a

culture to ‘Earn a star … become a recruiter,’” said Lt. Col. Annie Driscoll, AFRS Detachment 1 commander. “With a comprehensive approach that starts at the top of our chain of command, together we can better reach our nation’s youth and their influencers.”

To ensure the Air and Space Forces continue to recruit the best and brightest across America, Det. 1 seeks to actively inspire, engage and inform youth and those who influence them.

“GO Inspire is the framework that structures general officer outreach efforts, connects them to recruiters and recruiting efforts, and adds precision guidance to where efforts can be placed to reach areas that need it most,” Driscoll added.

The GO Inspire program will be asking general officers from all of the total force components to take part and contribute.

“The program encourages general officers to personally interact and inform youth influencers and youth on training, education, camaraderie and a variety of job opportunities available, as well as share some of the amazing experiences and accomplishments of Airmen Guardians,” said Lt. Col. Lara Wilson, AFRS Det. 1, chief of diversity and inclusion. “All of our general officers, to include active duty, Air National Guard, Air Force Reserve and Space Force are being

asked to participate and those who have heard about the GO Inspire program are excited and eager to get started.”

In order to become the most capable force, Air and Space Force leadership feels they must have rated officers and leaders with diverse backgrounds, experiences and thoughts who can see the challenges from different perspectives.

Det. 1 has a goal to get in front of every demographic group in America and show them someone in a flight suit who looks like them that they can look up to. GO Inspire officers conducting events are encouraged to bring a team that will give a broad representation of Air and Space Force officers.

“We encourage the GOs to use Det. 1’s AIM team,” Driscoll said.

“The AIM team can relate and engage well with those we are trying to reach. General officers are highly encouraged to take time to mentor their outreach team.”

While the GO Inspire program is set to kick off in January, some of the benefits of the program — especially when it comes to inspiring young people for service — may not be realized for years.

“The department’s intent is that every Total Force GO will execute one or two events a year,” Driscoll said. “We’ll work with senior leaders to track metrics but the fruits

of this labor won’t be measured for years to come. That is the nature of youth engagement. We may still be a decade away from seeing any of these young men or women in uniform. In the meantime, we want every young kid who looks up in the sky and sees an airplane or rocket launch to know that it could be them one day. We also want to help clarify the pathway to that seat in our services for both kids and their influencers.”

While the GO Inspire program is a call to action for general officers, all Airmen are encouraged to do their part to actively recruit for the Air Force.

We Are All Recruiters, or WEAR, is a program which grants active-duty Airmen permissive temporary duty status to participate in an event that helps Air Force recruiting efforts. Approval for WEAR is limited to those events where Airmen are directly speaking to potential applicants or influencers about Air Force opportunities.

“Regardless of rank or position, the Air and Space Force’s greatest recruiters are our service members,” Thomas said. “I encourage each and every Airman to participate in the WEAR program.”

KMC Onstage nabs 14 TOPPER Awards

The ups: the performances of the shows which actually made the stage. The downs: having to cancel shows due to COVID restrictions, including a youth show on opening night in March 2020.

“This was a very tough year for theaters throughout the world and for us in the KMC,” said Eric Danzeiser, KMC Onstage director. “These volunteer directors worked so hard to make their shows a success.

They overcame numerous obstacles to bring together an incredible team of volunteers, costumers, choreographers, builders, painters, actors, technicians to create a work of art. Then everything stopped because of COVID.” But their work did not go unnoticed.

For more than 50 years, U.S. Army Europe Entertainment has produced a Tournament of Plays for U.S. Army and Air Force Theater programs across Europe. It is now known as the U.S. Army Installation Management Command — Europe Tournament of Plays, or simply, the TOPPERs. Over a six to eight week period, professional theater adjudicators attend live performances at U.S. Army and Air Force theater programs in

Germany, Italy, Belgium and the Netherlands, according to the TOPPERS website.

Usually held in May, the ceremony was delayed until a virtual ceremony broadcast Dec. 20. The broadcast presenters varied from various commanders from throughout Europe, including Gen. Christopher Cavoli, U.S. Army Europe and Africa commander, Maj. Gen. Christopher Mohan, 21st Theater Sustainment Command commander to Hollywood/ Broadway actors including Chris Pine (Capt. Kirk from the newest “Star Trek” movies) and Harvey Fierstein, longtime Hollywood producer and actor in “Mrs. Doubtfire.”

And KMC Onstage brought home a trophy case full of hardware, winning 14 awards of 46 categories.

The three shows the TOPPERS judges watched were “Footloose: The Musical,” the drama/comedy “Five Women Wearing the Same Dress,” and the youth show, “Dinosaurs Before Dark.”

“I am really happy that all those who worked so hard are getting recognized this year, and I am grateful our leaders at Region were able to still have the competition and recognize our accomplishments,” Danzeiser said.

Danzeiser said it’s important to note the directors, cast and crews of the three shows viewed by the judges were completely

made up of volunteers.

Popplewell watched the awards broadcast and said growing up playing her mother’s records, including the “Footloose” soundtrack helped instill a love of the arts for her.

“Every nomination of “Footloose” felt like a cherry on top for a show I already felt so much pride in,” Popplewell said. “Of course, my win was great but, I squealed and cried for my team because I saw the work they put in the show.”

Winslow, a member of the U.S. Army-Europe Band and Chorus, got a late start watching the awards show, so was a little surprised when her phone started pinging.

“All of the sudden I started getting congratulation messages and I didn’t even know which category I was nominated in,” she said. “If I’m being honest, once I got to that part, I was just focused on the fact that Chris Pine said my name!”

Popplewell said she’s been a part of 13 KMC Onstage productions, as either cast or crew, in her four years in Kaiserslautern.

She said she’s hoping to direct a show in the upcoming season, COVID permitting.

“I’m seriously still in shock,” Popplewell said. “KMC Onstage hasn’t won a best musical, or best director, in a very long time and it’s incredibly rare to win both. Yeah, still in shock.”

On a more serious note,

Winslow said it can be tough for military members to find the kind of time it takes to volunteer to be a part of a show.

“I think it’s much harder to make the time commitment and to balance work, family and that creative passion,” she said. “So, the acknowledgment in that category [Best Military Performance in a Musical] is a nod, not just to your performance but to the lifestyle changes and work ethic

it takes to balance active duty and theater.”

The last show to run before the latest host nation restrictions closed the theater in November was, the musical comedy, “Disaster,” which had to cancel its last weekend of performances due to the restrictions.

“Now, I think we are all ready for 2020 to be over and for 2021 to begin, so we can get back to doing what we love…theater,” Danzeiser summed up.

Ulm: 6 things to do There is no shortage of fun to be had in Ulm. Here are six things to think about as you plan your trip.

1. Stroll the banks of the Danube River. There’s a reason the Danube is so famous.

It connects 10 countries (most in the world), starts in Germany, and is Europe’s second-longest river. Trade has been happening on the banks of this river since anyone can remember. Plus, Ulm has some lovely stretches of waterfront.

2. Walk the city walls. On a related note, you can walk city walls that were closely related to medieval river commerce.

Check out the Metzgerturm (Butcher’s Tower) and try not to think about the fact that there were far more walls before Napoleon showed up in 1800.

he left and eventually became an American citizen (and one of the greatest scientists in history, of course), Ulm has one small memorial and one kinda crazy fountain that celebrates the connection.

4. Walk the city center. Ulm’s city center is a fantastic blend of medieval and modern.

Check out the Fisherman’s Quarter or Rathaus for some of the latter, and the Stadthaus for some of the former.

5. Get arty. Ulm has two excellent art museums. The Kunsthalle Weishaupt, offers modern art in a brilliant space.

The Museum Ulm has a diverse set of collections, but specializes in the medieval.

6. Visit the zoo and aquarium. A small but mighty zoo and Danube-specific aquarium are fun for families and/ or nature-lovers. Be sure to check COVID-related opening hours on the website before you go.

The one thing you have to see: The Ulmer Münster First of all, it is beautiful that the tallest church in the world (for comparison: at 530 feet, it is almost exactly half the height of the Eiffel Tower) is called the Ulmer

Münster. Even though “münster” means “minster” (which is a specific type of church), the whole things looks wonderfully monstrous (in a good way) from the outside.

Simply put, you have to go see this church. It is one thing to read the words “tallest church in the world,” and a whole other thing to actually stand before it. It’s almost impossible to process the size. Stepping inside is well worth your time. The church’s interior is appropriately grand, humbling and powerful.

In non-COVID times, the climb to the top of the Ulmer Münster tower is a must-do. After more than 750 steps and 450 feet, visitors can see the Alps, far to the south, on a clear day.

Getting there By car, Ulm is three hours southeast of Kaiserslautern, one hour east of Stuttgart, and three hours southeast of Wiesbaden.
