Ramstein 2022: A year in review

Each year, Team Ramstein Airmen make a global impact, and 2022 held no exception. The year showcased dedication, innovation, and sacrifice to the mission.

Those qualities led the Department of Defense to name Ramstein Air Base the best installation in the Air Force as the winner of the 2022 Commander in Chief’s Annual Award for Installation Excellence.

Forming healthier habits in new year

Most of us make resolutions on New Year’s Day and, despite our best intentions, give up on them well before the first of February.

But did you know that it takes

The award, which has been earned by the base three times since 2006, highlighted the herculean efforts by Ramstein Airmen in the support of critical missions and Operation Allies Refuge in 2021.

“I am proud of what our team members do here each and every day, and I want them to continue to understand how valuable they are to this team,” said Brig. Gen. Otis C. Jones, 86th Airlift Wing commander. “The global gateway mission is only successful thanks to the dedicated efforts of our entire team of Airmen, civilians and host nation partners and their families who meet every challenge head on.”

Ramstein Airmen continued to deliver innovative ways to support the mission throughout 2022 with new programs such as the 86th Maintenance Group, who enhanced their virtual reality training, which enables the multi-capable Airman concept for agile combat employment.

The base also opened a new Airframe and Powerplant Training Facility. The facility is the first of its kind outside of the U.S. and allows eligible service members an opportunity to train and test for airframe and Powerplant certifications from the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration.

Upholding the critical global gateway mission, Team Ramstein continued to sustain vital aid to allied and partner nations throughout 2022.

• Russia began their attack on Ukraine early in the year, and Ramstein Airmen provided support to NATO’s Eastern flank.  C-130J Super Hercules aircraft assigned to the 37th Airlift Squadron reinforced our NATO allies and partners for movement of cargo and personnel. The 86th Logistics Readiness Group continues to contribute to the ongoing support of Ukraine.

• Ramstein Air Base was selected by U.S. Secretary of Defense Lloyd J. Austin III, to host the first Ukraine Defense Consultative Group as the challenges in Ukraine mounted. Austin was joined by Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen.

Mark A. Milley and ministers of defense and senior military officials from nearly 44 nations who met in April to discuss current and future efforts to provide support for Ukraine.

“We’re all coming away with a transparent and shared understanding of the challenge that the Ukrainians face,” said Austin during a press briefing that followed the conference. “I know that we’re all determined to help Ukraine win today and build strength for tomorrow. The work that we’ve done together in record time has made a huge difference on the battlefield.”

The world watched as nations came together again at Ramstein as Austin hosted a fifth meeting of the Ukrainian Defense Contact Group in September. Austin and Milley met to maintain close coordination between allies and partners furthering the discussion on Ukraine’s security cooperation.

Supporting NATO Allies and partners is second nature to Ramstein Airmen, but this year Ramstein also provided aid closer to home.

• Infant formula supplies were critically low in the U.S. and the U.S. Department of Agriculture, and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services were authorized to request Department of Defense support to pick up overseas infant formula that met U.S. health and safety standards during Operation Fly Formula.

Both military and civilian aircraft transited through Ramstein Air Base, and with the support of Ramstein Airmen and mission partners, delivered safe overseas infant formula to address critical shortages of formula in the U.S.

There is always something on the horizon at Ramstein that provides an opportunity to add to the base’s reputation, legacy, and heritage. This year was a year of milestones and celebrations.

• Both U.S. Air Forces in Europe and the 37th Airlift Squadron, located on Ramstein, celebrated 80th anniversaries, while Ramstein Air Base rang in 70 years.

Throughout the past 70 years, Ramstein has played a central role in airlift operations within Europe, Africa and the Middle East.  Ramstein has hosted more than 120 mission partners and supports the integration and caring for the greater Kaiserslautern Military Community and its 56,000 U.S. service members and their families.

“The mission of Team Ramstein is no-fail and our country, allies, and partners trust us to preserve the global gateway every single day,” said Jones. “Together, we will continue to answer our nations call, prepare for the future fight, and ensure the well-being of our greatest assets, our Airmen and their families.”

Moving into 2023, Team Ramstein will continue to meet the challenges of the global gateway mission and fortify allied and partner nation relationships. Whatever the new year brings, Team Ramstein is ready.

STATE OF THE ART: Rheinland-Pfalz

Many members of the Kaiserslautern Military Community have found temporary or even permanent homes in one of the many villages and towns surrounding Kaiserslautern in the heart of Rheinland-Pfalz. You may already be familiar with your immediate vicinity, but there is much more to explore and experience at your “home away from home”.

State of the Art is a series introducing Germany as a whole, but also highlighting an individual state or “Bundesland” every month.

At the end of World War II, Germany was divided into four sectors governed by the United States, Great Britain and France in the West and the Soviet Union in the East of the country.

The Federal Republic of Germany (West Germany) was established on May 23, 1949, with Bonn being the provisional capital. The states of Rheinland-Pfalz, Nordrhein-Westfalen, Hessen, Baden-Württemberg, Bayern, Niedersachsen, Schleswig-Holstein, the City States of Bremen, Hamburg as well as West Berlin, in its geographically isolated location, belonged to the federal republic. The small state of Saarland remained under French government until 1957.

The foundation of the German Democratic Republic (East Germany) followed on Oct. 7, 1949, including the states of Brandenburg, Thüringen, Sachsen-

Anhalt, Sachsen, MecklenburgVorpommern and East Berlin as its capital.

After the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, both countries were reunited in 1990 to make up the current nation with 16 individual “Bundesländer” and Berlin again became the capital.

Germany is a democratic, federal parliamentary republic, where federal legislative power is vested in the Bundestag (parliament in Berlin) and the Bundesrat (representative body of the states in Berlin). The current government is comprised of a coalition of three parties.

Based on the party colors, it is often referred to as “AmpelKoaltion” (traffic light coalition). The SPD (Social Democratic Party is represented in red), the FDP (Free Democratic Party in yellow) and the Grüne/Bündnis 90 (Greens/Alliance 90) are green). Olaf Scholz of the SPD as the majority party is the elected Federal Chancellor.

Each month we will feature a different state and provide facts about its history, heritage, industry and commerce, places of interest as well as experiences it offers.

Our journey will start in the State of Rheinland-Pfalz (Rhineland-Palatinate-RLP) home to Ramstein Air Base and a number of U.S. Army installations in or near Kaiserslautern. Rheinland-Pfalz has a size of roughly 19,846 km2 (7,663 sq mil) and a population of 4,093,900. It is in the southwestern part of Germany and borders France, Luxembourg, and a small part of Belgium.

Nature

Rheinland-Pfalz is a state of great diversity and has a lot to offer when it comes to nature. The largest coherent forest region, the Pfälzerwald (Palatinate Forest) stretches from Rheinland-Pfalz into France. The Hunsrück-Hochwald National Park is in the middle of the state, the Eifel further northwest and the Vulkaneifel with dormant volcanoes and volcanic lakes borders Nordrhein-Westfalen to the north. The Dahner Felsenland is a rugged landscape with amazing giant rock formations found in the southeast. Numerous lakes and rivers invite you to swim, relax and discover. Hundreds of castles or ruins along the rivers, in the forests or atop the hills will inspire you to explore and dive into a rich history. Celtic or Roman traces can be found throughout the state, such as the Celtic village in Steinbach just north of Kaiserslautern.

Located on or near the 50th latitude, a unique meso and microclimate plays a vital role when it comes to viticulture. Two thirds of Germany’s wines are cultivated in Rheinland-Pfalz in the Rheinhessen area near Mainz, the Moselle and Saar Valleys near Trier and the vineyards along the “Deutsche Weinstrasse” that stretch from Rheinhessen to Landau.

Mainz the capital, Romans, St. Martin Cathedral and Gutenberg Mainz is the capital with its “Landtag” (state parliament) situated along the banks of the Rhein River. Malu Dreyer of the SPD

(Social Democratic Party) is the Minister President and has been in office since January 2013. It is the largest city in Rheinland-Pfalz with a population of 215,000.

The city has been historically significant for over 2,000 years with traces of an early Celtic settlement. Roman Mainz, called Mogontiacum, developed out of a legion camp, the so-called Castrum, that was founded about 12 B.C. The civilian population eventually grew and brought with it skilled craftsmen and merchants and a port to carry goods was built directly at the Rhein River. The height of the Roman culture lasted for about 200 years until 406 A.D., when Germanic tribes conquered the region.

Ruins of the “Römisches Bühnentheater” (stage theater), Roman stones, a Jupiter column, the Isis und Mater MagnaHeiligtum (sanctuary) and a museum for ancient shipping speak of a flourishing Roman culture. For more info, visit https:// www.mainz-tourismus.com/en/ explore-enjoy/exploring-the-history-of-mainz/roman-mainz/

The most prominent edifice in the city is located on the historical market square and it is said that construction of St. Martin Cathedral began around the year 990 A.D. It has been restored and redesigned on a number of occasions in its over 1,000-year history, but its mainly Romanesque style has remained. The magnificent church has evidenced the crowning of numerous kings and queens.

During the High Middle Ages around 1300, the city was called

“Goldenes Mainz” and had about 20,000-25,000 inhabitants thanks to its flourishing commerce. A century later in 1450 it lost its city rights and was turned into an electoral residence city of little political significance. One of the most prominent characters of the time was Johannes Gutenberg who invented the printing press in Mainz, mass printed the Luther Bible and thus supported the spread of the Protestant Reformation. A replica of the original press can be visited at the Gutenberg Museum (https://www.mainz.de/microsite/ gutenberg-museum-en/).

Mainz and Napoleon

After he was crowned as “Emperor of the French” in 1804, Napoleon I visited Mainz for the first time and accounted “Mayence” as one of the 36 most important cities in France. He stayed in the city on numerous occasions and always resided in the “Deutschhaus.” The “Grand Rue Napoleon” was built for his parades and exists as “Ludwigsstrasse” today, while he also built a road that led from Paris to Mainz, traversing Kaiserslautern and commonly referred to as “Kaiserstrasse” (emperor’s road, now L395). His majesty also donated the grand bell in the cathedral which is marked with the inscription “Napoleon the Great.”

Mainz and Fun Facts

The city is also known for its “Fastnacht” (carnival) events and a fountain with a multitude of comical figures is located near the cathe-

dral. Other places of interest include the old town with semi-timbered buildings, the promenade along the Rhein River, the castle, the weekly farmer’s market and the Christmas Market in front of the cathedral.

Don’t miss out on the “Mainzelmännchen” on every pedestrian crosswalk light. The cute comic figures were created in the 1960’s when the ZDF (Zweites Deutsches Fernsehen, the second national television channel) opened in Mainz. A Mainzelbahn (street car) decorated with the figures was established in 2016 that takes commuters directly to the city center. The city is located precisely on the coordinates 50° 0’ 0.0” N,8° 16’ 16.16” E, very favorable for winemaking, and marked with a stone inscription opposite of the Staatstheater. www.mainz.de

Koblenz and the “German Corner”

The second largest city with 105,000 inhabitants is Koblenz, which is located at the mouth of the Moselle River where it flows into the Rhein River. The corner is referred to as “Deutsches Eck” and bears a giant statue of Wilhelm I, the first German emperor on his horse. The impressive fortress Ehrenbreitsein rises high above the city on the east bank of the Rhein River. Koblenz has a quaint old town and is located close to the Vulkaneifel region, well worth a visit. www.koblenz.de

Trier — Germany’s oldest city

Trier, the third largest city with a population of 100,000, is locat-

ed on the Moselle River, has been home for various cultures for 3,000 years and claims to be the oldest city in Germany. An early Celtic settlement inhabited by the Treveri Clan can be traced back to about 1,000 B.C. According to churchman Hieronymus (347-420 A.D.), Gaelic was still spoken during his time there. The Celts cultivated an early type of wine thanks to the mild temperatures along the Moselle River.

After decades of civil war, Roman emperor Augustus promoted the infrastructure of his newly conquered provinces, including the area along the Moselle. Augustus named the former Celtic settlement “Augusta Treverorum” after the Celts and began constructing the capital city of the Western Roman Empire. The city quickly became a trading hub and an attractive residential area. He had a wooden bridge built in the year 17 B.C. and the dark stone foundations of the bridge can still be seen today. These foundations were re-used during the construction of a new stone bridge in the Middle Ages, and the structure is commonly referred to as the “Römerbrücke” (Roman bridge).

Constantine — a well-traveled emperor

Trier boasts many prominent and well-restored structures built by the Romans, such as the Porta Nigra, the former northern gate, the Kaiserthermen, Barbara and Forum Thermen (Roman baths), as well as an amphitheater. The Constantine Basilica, which is now used as a Protestant Church, was originally

built as a throne hall for the emperor around the year 310 A.D. The structure is 67 m (220 ft) long, 27.5 m (90 ft) wide and 33 m (108 ft) high, has no supporting pillars and was equipped with a floor and wall heating system.

Constantine was the most prominent emperor and resided in “Treveris” from 306 to 316 A.D. He then travelled to the East, conquered Byzantium, renamed it Constantinople, and declared it the capital of the Eastern Roman Empire. Constantine died there in the year 337 A.D., and it is noted that he may have converted to Christianity prior to his death. In any case, he laid the foundation of the “Hagia Sophia” as a church, which is now used as a museum and mosque in modern Istanbul.

Other places of interest in the city are the palace and the palace gardens, the picturesque medieval market square, the view over the city from Petrisberg, a cruise up or down the Moselle River from Zurlauben, a quaint fisher village, and the vineyards within the city itself. The mighty cathedral was built on the remains of a Roman palace and the chessboard layout of the city with up to 75,000 inhabitants during Roman times, can still be seen today. Neighbors from Luxembourg and France still call the city “Trèves.” www.trier.de

Trier and Fun Facts

During the Protestant Reformation period, Franz von Sickingen from Landstuhl tried to conquer and secularize the City of Trier in the year 1522. He attacked

the city, but upon heavy resistance and retaliation finally had to give up his plan and completely devastated, returned to Castle Nanstein where he died a few years later.

Industry and commerce

While Rheinland-Pfalz is mainly shaped by viticulture and agriculture, such as asparagus, corn, potato and beet as well as dairy farming, there are a number of larger industrial areas as well. The BASF located at Ludwigshafen is the world’s largest chemical plant. Various IT-related businesses have sprung up over the years, automobile engines are assembled and ceramic catalyst parts as well as clothing are produced in Kaiserslautern, cranes, and heavy equipment in Zweibrücken and shoes in Pirmasens.

Other cities and towns to see Speyer, a mid-size city along the banks of the Rhein River, is well worth a visit. The largest sacral building in the state, the Speyerer Dom, is located there. In addition, a visit to the Technik Museum, Sea Life or a stroll through Adenauer Park or Maximillian Strasse to Altpörtel or a visit at the Jewish Mikveh can be interesting. www.speyer.de

Landau, a former French garrison town with a unique Francophile atmosphere is very close to the bor-

der. The grandiose market square and the cozy pedestrian zone invite you to shop or enjoy an afternoon coffee. The zoo with animals from around the world is situated in a woody park and you might discover small booths selling wine or grape juice along the Deutsche Weinstrasse which leads up to the German Weintor. www.landau.de

Neustadt/Weinstrasse is a quaint and very picturesque town with medieval architecture, small alleys and a beautiful market square. The Elvedritsche fountain will surprise you with astonishing fabulous figures and the German wine queen is crowned there every year during the Weinlesefest in October.

A number of small, picturesque villages and towns also lie along the Deutsche Weinstrasse. Visit www.neustadt-weinstrasse.de for more info.

Last but not least, you may already be familiar with the sights in Kaiserslautern, such as the Garden Show and Japanese Garden, impressive Fritz-WalterStadium and surrounding recreational areas. Make sure to explore beyond the small towns and villages in your vicinity, venture out, engage in traditional fests and activities to take back fond memories of your stay in the State of Rheinland-Pfalz in the middle of Europe.

HOW WELL DO YOU KNOW GERMAN LICENSE PLATES?

Germany has a very special method of issuing license plates depending on where you live. Unlike in the United States, where plates are issued according to states with different colors or designs. In Germany all plates are designed with black letters on a white background, they have a D (Deutschland) and the European Union symbol in a blue rectangle on the left. Generally speaking, the larger a city, the shorter the abbreviation. For example, a car registered in Augsburg receives an A as the first letter, then a hyphen with one or two letters and a row of one to four digits.

It is also possible to register your car with a personalized plate using a desired letter combination or your initials and a particular number you choose, such as a birthdate. A car registered as A-AB-123 could, but must not, be attributed to a person with the initials AB born on March 12.

The second set of combinations is for somewhat smaller cities, such as Kaiserslautern with KL, which is well familiar in the area. As some letters are already taken, it might be necessary to assign two letters for a large city, such as HH, which stands for Hansestadt Hamburg.

And, there are a few combinations used for special purposes, such as X for NATO vehicles or CD (Corps Diplomatique) for diplomats. Any plate with an E at the end, such as KL-EC-456E, means that this is an electric car. My personal favorite I spotted once was GI-NA 14!

Any smaller cities or even regions may be assigned a combination of three letters, an example of a town nearby is Homburg with HOM. There are also special combinations for official vehicles, such as NRW for police or leading politicians in NordrheinWestfalen.

Test your knowledge, or make it a challenge of finding out, how many plate combinations you know by taking our License Plate Quiz.

The pandemic and other events that marked the end of 2021 rolled into 2022 but the garrison remained rolled on being a People First ‘Ready Garrison’ as the year progressed.

January kicked off with meeting a major goal: The much anticipated smart metering program where nearly 700 utility meters were installed throughout the garrison started producing targeted data making the garrison’s energy savings efforts more efficient. Those smart meters proved crucial in the coming months.

In February, NATO’s Eastern Flank — including garrison sites in Romania and Bulgaria, became critical hotspots as the crisis in Ukraine unfolded. Employees from across the garrison deployed to Army Support Activity-Black Sea in support of allied partners. ASA-BS’s Anti-Terrorism/ Force protection team showcased “Ready Garrison” capabilities when they successfully completed a tabletop exercise with partners from Belgium, France, Romania and the United Kingdom. The exercise also formally activated the Mihail Kogalniceanu

Air Base, Romania, Installation Operations Center.

While support was being poured into Romania and Bulgaria, the garrison, particularly its Headquarters and Headquarters Company excelled at hosting Installation Management Command – Europe’s Best Warrior Competition. Twelve Soldiers from around IMCOM-E gathered in Baumholder for four days to test themselves physically and mentally while competing amongst IMCOM-E’s best at all aspects of soldiering.

July proved to be a busy month as it kicked off with a much-anticipated celebration of Americans in Baumholder. Because of the pandemic, the official 70th Anniversary was quietly recognized in December 2022 but after 70 years what’s a few more months to give such a milestone the recognition and celebration it deserved. Regardless when the celebration hit, the garrison remains committed to our valuable German-American partnerships and only strengthen as the years go on.

About three weeks later, the garrison welcomed a new commander. With a pass of the official colors, Col. Reid E. Furman and his family became the latest members of garrison family.

Fall welcomed another new first for the garrison. In an effort to recruit the next generation of local nationals, the garrison launched its apprentice program. Six students from the Kaiserslautern and Baumholder communities started working in various trades and administrative positions.

For the first time in years, the garrison’s and the U.S. Army Europe Band and Chorus was able to properly host its largest community relations event, the German- American Friendship Concert. About 500 attended the annual event that is held on the German reunification holiday.

Host nation relations didn’t end there. Throughout the year, garrison leadership in the Baumholder and Kaiserslautern Military communities paid their respects at several key German memorial holidays. Leadership paid respect at National Day of Mourning wreath laying ceremonies, the Chinook crash at Mannheim airport and a visit to the American Kindergraves in Kaiserslautern.

As the calendar rolls into the New Year, and 2023 rolls in, the garrison will continue to take care of the Army’s greatest asset — its people.

Year in review: Another historic year for AMOW

The 521st Air Mobility Operations Wing has accomplished another historic and defining year for the en route.

Coming off the heels of Operation ALLIES REFUGE and ALLIES WELCOME in 2021, Airmen of the 521st AMOW were accustomed to an unprecedented pace of operations.

Their no-fail role again came to the spotlight many times throughout 2022.

“This year the 5-2-1 was not defined by a single moment of greatness,” said Col. Dan Cooley, 521st AMOW commander. “Instead, it was defined by our Airmen working hard to support our nation, allies and partners over 365 days.”

Support to NATO

Leading up to and following Russia’s unprovoked invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, the 521st AMOW postured to support North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) allies and partners.

As the Department of Defense’s strategic air transport organization in this theater, the 521st AMOW quickly provided a series of inter-theater strategic airlift missions for military members and cargo moving to bolster Europe’s Eastern flank.

“The flash to bang was quick,” said Col. Jens Lyndrup, commander of the 721st Air Mobility Operations Group. “We had to get things moving immediately and move them fast.”

Across the wing, Airmen engaged in an intense and sustained effort to transport Army Soldiers, move munitions and equipment, bed down tankers at non-standard stations, deploy

fighter squadrons, conduct aeromedical evacuations, support stage crews, and deploy its members to augment capability across multiple nodes.

These herculean efforts to move large quantities of personnel and equipment across theaters at short notice, demonstrated the key capabilities the 521st AMOW has long offered the U.S. Transportation Command and the DOD.

Security Assistance

While traditional en route nodes expected to see significant cargo, USTRANSCOM also opened an entirely new flex node. A civilian airfield was transformed into a critical hub for aid, offering an aerial port of disembarkation tightly connected to ground networks near the Ukrainian border.

The 435th Air Ground Operations Wing assumed the U.S. Air Force lead for security aid, but it received substantial assistance from 521st AMOW Airmen who deployed in key roles.

Because AMOW personnel are already stationed in theater, they can deploy rapidly to the point of need, offering options to Air Mobility Command and USTRANSCOM as they determine how to sustain a long-term presence.

“That is the beauty of the AMOWs,” said Lyndrup, “We’re already here in the fight, and we have built-in partnerships with other units in the area of responsibility.”

The first 521st AMOW members moved out from Ramstein AB on February 4. The team of 36 aerial porters and maintainers gained full operational capacity the very next day.

On February 6, the first C-17 aircraft arrived with elements of the 82nd Airborne Division’s Immediate Response Force. 521st AMOW Airmen remained at the center of events for the next two weeks.

The Russian invasion began February 24, and the 521st AMOW and its partners began another three months of surge operations.

In total, 64 members came

from the 521st AMOW in four teams. The 721st APS, 721st Aircraft Maintenance Squadron, 726th Air Mobility Squadron, 724th Air Mobility Squadron, and 728th Air Mobility Squadron all contributed personnel.

“The magnitude of what was accomplished is not lost on me or my Ukrainian counterparts,” said Lt. Col. Matthew Stewart, 435th Contingency Response Squadron commander. “All our international and joint partners have voiced their gratitude and expressed how impressed they were that we could take an extremely dynamic environment and turn it into an organized and streamlined operation.”

At the end of May, security assistance operations transitioned to a longer-term construct, and the last of the 521st AMOW members returned to their home stations.

In total, elements of U.S. European Command, including AMOW Airmen downloaded 1,079 flights, including a peak of 24 in a single day. Over 33,000 tons of cargo came through the station, as well as 8,217 passengers.

This operation tested the AMOW’s ability to augment contingency response forces in theater, generated fruitful lessons learned, and opened the door to several partnerships with NATO and Joint U.S. European Command partners.

Ramstein as an operational hub

Ramstein AB has traditionally been the DOD’s main airlift hub for operations in Europe, and this proved true yet again in the invasion response.

A significant amount of cargo came to Ramstein through ground channels, leading to a greater need than ever for the AMOW to be closely tied in with its Army partners.

As members of the 82nd Airborne Division arrived to Ramstein, the 721st APS handled the logistics of directing them to points across Europe, while at the same time continuing cargo movements.

Meanwhile, the 721st Mobility

Support Squadron hosted the staged aircraft and crews, and provided them with command and control, intel and tactics briefs, cyber support, flight equipment, and security forces Ravens. The squadron also conducted aeromedical evacuation operations through its 10th Expeditionary Aeromedical Evacuation Flight.

721st AMXS maintainers provided en route aircraft maintenance and balanced aircraft parking needs with overall mission flow, including an unusually high number of commercial cargo missions. 521st AMOW and host wing units ensured these aircraft kept moving, and supplies reached where they needed to go.

The first major lift from the hub was in early March when the 521st AMOW moved 594 tons of materiel and 100 associated passengers across 19 missions.

Ramstein frequently functioned as an in-transit location for C-17s and C-5 Galaxy aircraft heading East. 521st AMOW Airmen at Ramstein also had significant support for U.S. Air Forces Europe C-130 Hercules conducting intra-theater movements of people, equipment, and cargo.

Among these massive cargo movements, the 521st AMOW supported the movement of Presidential Drawdown Authority cargo. PDA missions allow the delivery of equipment to Ukraine by drawing down from DOD stocks without going below U.S. readiness requirements.

Ramstein’s largest support to PDA movements occurred in August when 55 missions moved 575 aircraft pallets of munitions on C-130 and C-17 aircraft.

This movement roughly totaled the amount of rounds that all U.S. Army towed and self-propelled Howitzer Artillery Battalions shoot in an average two-year period.

Overall, 521st AMOW units on Ramstein supported 130 missions in the movement of 1,387 passengers and 1.1M pounds of cargo to multiple locations supporting Ukraine.

Support to tankers, fighters, and Joint partners

In parallel with personnel and equipment, aircraft moved around and into the European theater.

The 521st AMOW’s 726th AMS, hosted by the 52nd Fighter Wing at Spangdahlem AB, Germany, and 724th AMS, hosted by the 31st Fighter Wing at Aviano AB, Italy, supported their USAFE combat air force partners. As the fighters prepared for potential movement, AMOW Airmen performed joint inspections, provided passenger services, and facilitated cargo movements.

“At all of our nodes, we have strong, interdependent relationships with host units, necessary for operational success,” said Cooley.

Several en route stations saw the arrival of new types of aircraft. KC-10 Extender tankers arrived at Royal Air Forces Mildenhall, United Kingdom, where the 727th AMS provided care and feeding, facilities, and administrative support for the AMC detachment members prior to their rotation to Spangdahlem. The 727th AMS also enabled rapid deployment of the 352nd Special Operations Wing when it was called upon for theater requirements.

The 726th AMS at Spangdahlem provided parking, facilities, and fleet services for the rotating KC-10 aircraft and later a KC-135 Stratotanker detachment staged in theater.

In addition to fighter support, 724th AMS enabled the movements of their U.S. Army neighbors at the 173rd Airborne Brigade.

In Spain, the 725th AMS, located on Naval Station Rota, led an enhanced team of additional forces at their detachment on Morón Air Base, Spain, to support the first AMC KC-46A Pegasus Employment Concept Exercise.

Because this year’s seasonal

CORONET rotation took place at the same time as enhanced operations across the theater, the 725th AMS Det-1 coordinated the reception, communication, air ground equipment, and facility support required for the pop-up tanker detachment. A team of personnel from the 728th AMS at Incirlik Air Base, Turkey, deployed to Morón AB to provide additional manpower for aerial port operations.

Operation Fly Formula

In late May, in response to a critical domestic production shortage of baby formula, the President of the United States announced Operation FLY FORMULA to import formula from overseas and onto store shelves.

Initial planning intended to use DOD contracted commercial airlift; however, military airlift and the AMOW’s en route system offered unmatched immediacy and speed. The President announced the operation on May 19, and less than 72 hours later a C-17 aircraft offloaded pallets of infant formula onto commercial ground transport at Indianapolis International Airport.

Enabled by 86th Security Forces Squadron, 86th Vehicle Readiness Squadron, and others, the 521st AMOW load and launched the aircraft from Ramstein AB less than two days from official tasking.

After several months of providing aid from the United States to partners and allies abroad, the 521st AMOW, total force mobility aircrew, and mission partners on Ramstein AB were proud to deliver humanitarian support from Europe to American families back home.

Team Ramstein and commercial partners supported the second shipment only hours later, totaling 43 pallets, 99 tons of formula, and an estimated equivalent of 2 million bottles.

All subsequent missions took place on contracted airlift facilitated by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS).

According to a White House press release on September 29, Operation FLY FORMULA had transported more than 97.9 million eight-ounce bottle equivalents to the U.S — an effort initiated and accelerated by 521st AMOW Airmen.

Around the 521st AMOW

Other significant events across the wing and beyond Ramstein AB include: the inactivation of the 5th Expeditionary Air Mobility Squadron on Ali Al Salem Air Base and Al Mubarak Air Base, Kuwait; the expansion of AE capabilities at the AMOW’s operating location at Camp Lemmonier, Djibouti; the annual Port Dawg Rodeo; the Wing Change of command; the 8th Expeditionary Air Mobility Squadron humanitarian aid to Pakistan after the country experienced historic levels of flooding; the 727th AMS bringing back the Patriot Express rotator to Royal Air Force Mildenhall and community; the seamless transition to AFFORGEN at multiple nodes; and the 725th AMS swift and diligent response to a tornado on NAVSTA Rota.

As the wing approaches its 15-year anniversary, Airmen of the 521st AMOW will continue in 2023 to craft war-ready Airmen, drive deliberate transformation, and execute Rapid Global Mobility.

“I’m extremely proud of what this wing accomplished in 2022,” said Cooley. “In 2023, our Airmen will become more lethal, we will transform in order to dominate future air mobility logistics, and we will prove to be the DOD’s unfair advantage in any fight. With Operation MOBILITY GUARDIAN around the corner, let’s show them what we’ve got. Let’s go!”

Ramstein Airman survives rare medical condition

As a 20 year old, Airman 1st Class in the United States Air Force, Tyler Benner was, as most people would put it, “killing it.”

His aggressive work ethic was paying off. He was nominated for a quarterly award and was working

up to his below-the-zone package.

“I’m passionate about everything I do and work is no exception,” Benner said. “I enjoy performing at my best and it was so uplifting to be recognized.”

His strenuous weightlifting routine and success in rugby left him with a feeling of pride in his accomplishments. He was striving to be able to play rugby on the Air

Force team.

“I was feeling on top of the world,” Benner said. “Everything in life seemed to be coming together.”

On the day of his quarterly award ceremony, a day when his coworkers, leaders, and friends were on-hand to acknowledge his accomplishments, he was not.

“I was feeling pain in my ribs and I couldn’t eat or drink so I was sent to the emergency room at Landstuhl Medical Center,” Benner said.

Throughout his time there, Benner says that the staff went above and beyond for him and were at his bedside within seconds if he needed anything.

After multiple scans and tests, the doctor sent him to Hamburg Medical Center in Hamburg, Germany to undergo an operation that yielded no success in fixing his pain.

“I couldn’t believe the situation I was in,” Benner said. “I was eating right and I was serious about my fitness. I felt healthy. So how did this happen?”

Tyler says his time at Hamburg was silent torture. The constant stabbing in his side was dull compared to the thoughts running through his mind.

“All I could think about was if I was going to be okay,” Benner said. “The sense of not knowing what my future looked like was unbearable.”

After a failed attempt to fix his ailment, Benner was sent to Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Maryland to undergo further treatments.

The situation had progressed quickly, leaving Benner with a feeling of hopelessness.

“I had a collapsed lung, internal bleeding, extreme weight loss and the abscess continued to grow

until they found the right remedy and the explanation for what caused it,” Benner said.

Finally, there was a breakthrough. Aggregatibacter aphrophilus, a common bacteria residing in the mouth, caused his blood to become septic and resulted in the growth of a baseball-sized abscess in his liver. The rare medical condition has only been reported a handful of times in the world.

Once he was diagnosed, doctors were able to provide appropriate treatment. Benner’s condition finally started to turn around for the better as he was put on medications to help with the infection.

Eventually, Benner was able to return home and continues treatment as the abscess shrinks.

Benner says that recovery isn’t easy but the thought of returning to his old self and chasing his goals again is what keeps him going.

“It changed me a lot,” Benner said. “I no longer take the small things for granted because I realize

that tomorrow is never promised.”

Benner is slowly acclimating back to the lifestyle he once lived.

He is active again at work where he has spent the last two years providing cargo and personnel transportation around Ramstein Air Base.

His impact has even stretched outside of the Kaiserslautern Military Community by supporting operations that have ongoing impacts across Eastern Europe. Additionally, he took it upon himself as a physical training leader to lead group exercises for his entire squadron, ensuring that all of his wingmen passed the physical training assessment.

Outside of work he is returning to the activities he loves most, playing rugby, weightlifting and traveling.

“I’ve missed out on a lot in the past couple of months,” Benner said. “I can’t wait to get back on track and chase my goals with this newfound motivation.”

Unbeknownst to him, about a year after this photo was taken, he would face a rare life-threatening medical condition, and survive.

Flu season’s here: You still can get your flu shot for protection

If you haven’t gotten your annual flu shot yet, is it too late? Absolutely not, experts say.

And while last week was the annual National Influenza Vaccine Week, there is plenty of flu vaccine available. You can still be well protected with just one shot.

Flu shots are available at your local military hospital or clinic, through TRICARE, at participating pharmacies, and even at temporary flu clinics. The shots are mandated each year for all those in the armed services to help maintain readiness. The mandated deadline for 90% of service members to get their annual flu shots is Jan. 15 each year with some services as early as Dec. 15.

As of Dec. 2, “we are 72% compliant overall,” said U.S. Army Lt. Col. Katie Martinez, deputy director of operations for the Defense Health Agency Health Care Division. That compares to 68% last year, “so overall we are doing better this year than we have in the previous flu seasons,” she said, adding: “I anticipate we will hit 90% compliance by the established deadlines.”

The influenza vaccine is recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for every one 6 months of age and older. For people 65 years and older, who are at a higher risk of developing flu-related complications, the CDC recommends a higher dose or adjuvanted flu vaccine. If a higher dose or adjuvanted flu vaccine are not available, please consult with your provider about which flu vaccine is right for you.

The young, those with compromised immune systems or chronic diseases, and the elderly are at risk of serious complications from the flu, so getting them immunized is important.

“Hospitalization rates are higher at this point in the flu season compared to last year,” Martinez said, citing figures from the CDC. This is for both those 65 and older and for children up to 4 years old.

So far, there have been 14 pediatric deaths from flu nationwide, which is more at this time than during last year’s flu season, she added.

Don’t forget your COVID-19 shots

While you’re getting your flu shot, you also can get your COVID19 booster or series at the same time.

While COVID-19 infection rates appear to be trending downward for the moment, it is still important to get your booster, especially the bivalent boosters against subvariants coming soon, which came out earlier this fall. They have been shown to protect

against the Omicron variant and its subvariants as well as the original form of COVID-19 and the subsequent Delta variant. Omicron and its mutations remain the dominant variants that cause COVID-19.

“Both respiratory diseases are circulating worldwide, and hospitalization rates are trending higher for the flu this year than the rate observed in week 46 during every previous season since 2010-2011,” Martinez said, citing CDC data.

“Flu seasons are unpredictable in a number of ways, including when they begin, how severe they are, how long they last, which viruses will spread, and whether the viruses in the vaccine match flu viruses that are circulating,” the CDC said. All flu vaccines available this year protect against four different circulating flu viruses.

“National Influenza Vaccine Week

highlights the need for every eligible person to get their annual flu shot, but also this year, their latest COVID19 booster or series,” said U.S. Public Health Service Commissioned Corps Rear Adm. Brandon Taylor, director of Defense Health Agency Public Health.

“It’s a reminder to all that flu and COVID-19 are major national public health issues that can affect the youngest to the oldest and the healthiest to those whose immune systems are weakened.” He added, “This holiday season, think of others you may be joining for gatherings, and be protected from flu and COVID-19, not only for yourself, but also for all your family, colleagues, and friends.”

Could it be RSV?

This year, it can also be hard to determine if you have the seasonal flu, COVID-19 or respiratory syncy-

tial virus, since all three are respiratory infections, and RSV numbers are well up from last year in children. All three have similar symptoms, with fever being the most common. If you want to know for sure, you can check with your health care provider. These viruses could become severe in a short span of time, so starting on the right treatment can be important.

Prevention, Prevention, Prevention

Just as with the COVID-19

pandemic, there are some simple ways to better protect yourself from getting sick and from spreading your flu or COVID-19:

• Get vaccinated. Vaccines save lives.

• Wash your hands regularly with soap and water or use alcoholbased hand sanitizer.

• Cover your nose and mouth with tissue or the inside of your elbow when you cough or sneeze.

• Clean and disinfect surfaces regularly that may be contaminated with these viruses.

• Stay home when you are not feeling well; don’t send your kids to school or daycare if they feel ill.

• Talk to your health care provider if you begin to feel ill. There are treatments for both flu and COVID-19 that are available if caught quickly enough through testing.

• Limit contact with others when you are sick and avoid close contact with people who are sick.

• When possible, do more activities outdoors where the droplets that spread these diseases are lessened by the large amount of fresh air.

21 days to form a new habit and 6 months to make it a routine? If you start today, by early summer, you’ll be well on your way to a healthier, happier you!

Try these easy tricks to create 3 new habits that, in just 21 days, will produce a real and lasting change well into the new year.

1. Drink more water

Start your day with a nice, big glass of water — before your coffee or tea. This simple trick will rehydrate you after a long (or short) night of sleep and help wake up your body and your brain! Even a 2 percent level of dehydration can have a significant impact on your physical and mental performance.

Keep a water bottle nearby

After you have your first glass of water, fill a water bottle and keep it with you. Keep it in the car, in your sports bag, in your purse, and on your desk. Refill and sip it all day. Aim to drink half of your ideal weight in ounces everyday. For example, if your ideal weight is 120 pounds, drink 60 oz. of water. That’s less than 4 16 oz. glasses a day. If you have one before breakfast, you’re already 25 percent there! Good start!

2. Get Active

You don’t have to work out 2 hours a day at the gym but you do need to do something that gets your heart rate up… every day. Bike, hike, walk, jog, belly dance, ski, whatever!

Mix up your routine to keep it interesting. Some people like to exercise first thing,

before the day gets away from them. It helps them feel energized and ready to take on the day. For others, a mid-day break is what they need to power through the afternoon doldrums. I like to workout at the end of the day to release stress. It helps me refocus and enjoy time with my family. Figure out what time works best for you.

Schedule it — in writing

Add your workout plan right into your daily planner. Commit to it just as you would a doctor appointment or an important meeting. Think of it as putting your oxygen mask on first so you can help others. It’s that important! Get your family on board and find a buddy to help keep you accountable. You’ll be helping each other!

Sneak “small acts of fitness” into your day

Small changes can really add up to big results when you choose action over inaction. If it helps, just pretend you have a doctor’s prescription for these behaviors and you’ll need to report back on how well you followed his or her orders.

Always take the stairs, never the elevator or escalator. Park as far as you can from the office, the mall entrance, the dry cleaner and the grocery store and walk. Think of your heavy grocery bags, or small children, as weights and make each “lift” count! At home, take the stairs 2 at a time, slowly. Believe me, these small acts of fitness really add up!

3. Plan Meals

If you know what your menu plan is for

the week, you won’t be tempted to impulse buy or opt for pizza. It saves time and money too!

Make a weekly grocery list and stick to it

Replenish your staples and choose organic, lean meats, seasonal fruits and veggies, and fresh herbs that fit your menu. Only buy what you need. Avoid processed food, sodas and junk food. Keep a variety of healthy foods at home for quick, easy snacks and meals.

Make “Dinner in a Bowl” with pasta, protein and veggies

I know, you’ve probably been told that pasta is fattening and that carbs are bad. The truth is that pasta is a complex carbohydrate that can be a nutritious part of healthy diet. If you balance the carbs in

the pasta with high-quality, lean protein, good fats and lots of healthy, fresh veggies, then it becomes the perfect nutrient-rich mix that you need to replenish your energy reserves and nourish your body. Pasta tastes great too.

Try one healthy pasta recipe once a week

If you do this for a full 6 months, you’ll have 24 easy and nutritious pasta recipes that you can rely on. Recipes you can easily adapt to what’s in season, what’s available locally and your family’s preferences. You can include a few special occasion recipes too like meaty lasagna and pasta Alfredo for those times when you need to feed a crowd or just want some serious comfort food! Remember to watch the portion size, savor the meal slowly, follow with a healthy, fresh salad and enjoy the moment…la dolce vita (the sweet life).

Offering gel polish, sculpted gel, acrylics, paraffin wax treatments, repairs and enhancement removals.

strive to maintain a professional, clean, and relaxing environment for the clients by creating personal connections and quality work.
