Ramstein, Mildenhall Airmen partner above German skies Story and photos by Airman 1st Class Brandon Esau 100th Air Refueling Wing Public Affairs Members of the 86th Aeromedical Evacuation Squadron from Ramstein Air Base performed training aboard a KC-135 Stratotanker from RAF Mildenhall, England, Jan. 23. During the training, members practiced emergency medical scenarios, including patients suffering worsening health conditions, cardiac emergencies, aircraft decompression and emergency ditching of an aircraft. “We perform this training to ensure our squadron is at full readiness and proficiency,” said Maj. Maria Rocio Vazquez, 86th AES medical crew director. “There are many times during realworld situations when an aircraft has an emergency and we have patients expe-

Air Force ends promotion testing for E-7 and above by Secretary of the Air Force Public Affairs The Air Force announced today it is removing the Weighted Airman Promotion System testing requirement for active-duty promotions to the grades of E-7 through E-9, beginning this fall with the 2019 E-9 promotion cycle. The memo, signed Jan. 31, removes the phase one requirement for senior noncommissioned officers to test for promotion, allowing promotion boards to identify the best qualified Airmen to promote into the senior noncommissioned officer corps. Prior to the policy change, promotions were conducted through a two-phase process. Phase one consisted of a Promotion Fitness Exam and Specialty Knowledge Test, while

phase two consisted of a central evaluation board. “We continue to transform talent management across the force,” said Lt. Gen. Brian Kelly, Air Force deputy chief of staff for manpower, personnel and services. “This adjustment focuses on performance being the driving factor we consider when selecting our senior noncommissioned officers. It also continues our work toward increasing transparency and making our processes simple.” The Air Force will use a promotion board process similar to the board process used by officers. “We trust this board process will continue to give senior leaders and commanders the greatest level of confidence that the right individuals are being selected for promotion

FUTURE from Page 1 “Piloting during aeromedical evacuations is of the utmost importance not only to our mission in U.S. Air Forces in Europe-Air Forces Africa, but all across the Air Force,” Douglas said. “There is always the possibility of facing dangerous real-world situations that will call for not only our crew, but the medical crew and support agencies to be prepared for, and this training provides ample opportunities to sharpen our skills across the board.” The AE team consisted of two flight nurses, three aeromedical technicians and a collection of instructors and evaluators who graded the annual evaluation of the team. “Our main mission is to always provide global patient movement during wartime and peacetime,” Vazquez said. “Whether it is a mass casualty situation or one involving military dependents, our team must always be prepared to answer the call.” According to Vazquez, most aeromedical squadrons consist of 80 to 90 personnel, which include doctors, nurses, administration and other assorted specialties. As one of the evaluators on board, Staff Sgt. Kyle Pancheco described how critical this training is for his entire team. “Every time we undertake an evacuation training, it is essential we understand the need for increased flexibility for the airframes we perform medical procedures on,” Pancheco said. “We normally fly on C-17s and C-130s, but in an everchanging theatre, we must always be prepared to take our work elsewhere.” With that said, Vazquez expressed how pleased she was with how this stint of training was performed. “Things never go as you plan, but I believe it went very well,” Vazquez explained. “Whether it’s changing flight plans, patient conditions or whatever else is thrown our way, we must be flexible and complete the mission.”

The Tax Center is co-located with the Ramstein Law Center in Building 2137 on Ramstein AB. Appointments can be made by calling the Tax Center at 480-1040 or 06371-47-1040. Expanding on last year’s self-help model, during 2019 the Ramstein Tax Center will provide basic tax

preparation and filing services for active duty personnel and their dependents as well as military retirees with SOFA status who have: 1) income under $100,000 ($150,000 for a married couple filing a joint return); 2) residential rental property in no more than one state; 3) no foreign earned or taxed income; and 4) no more than five capital asset (stock) transactions. Our focus is on personal income tax and we are unable to assist with the filing of taxes related to commercial activities like home businesses. Assistance may be provided to other KMC personnel who have SOFA

status on a space available basis. If you need assistance please call. In addition to the Ramstein Tax Center, the Army has one tax center in the KMC area this year. New guidance on taxable moving expenses for civilians by 21st TSC Office of the Staff Judge Advocate Additional information on the taxation of moving expenses for civilian employees is now available that changes guidance issued last year. As previously reported, many moving benefits paid or reimbursed by an employer are now taxable to the relocating employee under the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, passed in December 2017. For PCS moves after January 1, 2018, some PCS move expenses for U.S. Government civilian employees paid for or reimbursed by the U.S. Government are taxable benefits. Current guidance is that the following PCS expenses are taxable entitlements under the new tax law: household goods (HHG) shipment, transportation and per diem (including airfare), en-route lodging, and mobile home shipment. Also taxable now are house hunting trip expenses, Temporary Quarters Subsistence Expense (but not Temporary Quarters Subsistence Allowance), real estate expenses, non-temporary HHG storage (CONUS), temporary HHG storage (first 30 days), the miscellaneous expense allowance, and relocation services. POV shipments associated with an overseas move and non-temporary storage of household goods are not taxable. For DoD civilian employ-

ees, the additional tax burden may be offset by the Relocation Income Tax Allowance (RITA), which is designed to reimburse DoD civilian employees for federal, state and local income taxes incurred as a result of receiving taxable relocation benefits. DoD civilian employees may also be authorized the Withholding Tax Allowance (WTA), which is an advance against RITA, claimed by the employee on the travel settlement voucher following the completion of travel. A new appointee (an employee new to Government work) is not eligible for WTA or RITA, nor are employees returning from an overseas assignment for the purpose of separation from Government service. RITA and WTA are taxable reimbursements. Since PCS move expenses, WTA, and RITA are included as income to the employee, mandatory withholdings for income tax, FICA and Medicare will be made by DFAS on behalf of the employee. Tax withholding payments made by DFAS are deducted from the travel settlement amount or must be reimbursed by the employee. For travel settlements made after Oct. 30, 2018, tax withholding payments should be reflected on the travel settlement voucher. For travel settlements made before Oct. 30, 2018, DFAS will notify the

employee of the debt and procedures for repayment. DFAS is currently upgrading procedures to include PCS move benefits as taxable income on W-2 statements. A relocating employee’s 2018 W-2 released through MyPay in January, may not include all taxable PCS expenses. Employees who PCSed in 2018 should carefully

review Leave and Earnings Statements, travel settlements, and the 2018 W-2 issued by DFAS to account for taxable PCS move expenses and monitor their MyPay account for delivery of an additional or corrected W-2. Those employees may need to file an amended tax return and a supplemental RITA claim.

As we reported earlier, the change to the tax law that made moving expenses taxable does not apply to uniformed military personnel moving pursuant to orders. Additional information on the change in the tax law can be found at the DFAS web site: http://www.dfas.mil/ TaxLawChange.

Intel Airman trades stripes for bars after enlisting, that changed. “I fell in love with the culture, the people, the structure… and I quickly decided to make it a full-time career,” he said. After finishing his bachelor’s degree in psychology in 2015, Josiah applied for OTS for the first time. He ended up applying three more times and getting turned down each time. “It is a gut punch because then you really question if you did something wrong. You wonder if your application was just not strong enough. Each time my leadership was there to pick me up to keep going,” Josiah said.

by 450th Intelligence Squadron “I got something for our daughter to wear.” Staff Sgt. Josiah knew his wife hated when he picked out clothes for their daughter, but this time there was an unseen benefit. At home for his wife to see, he laid out a plain white onesie, and next to it, two gold bars, representative of an almost seven-year journey and a goal that had finally come to fruition. A family affair Earlier that day, Josiah received notification in a monthly commander’s call that he earned commission to become an intelligence officer through the Senior Leader Enlisted Commissioning Program. SLECP is a commissioning program that enables designated Air Force senior leaders to select enlisted members who are highly talented and exhibit exceptional performance to commission through officer training school. After two attempts of applying for a commission through the board process, and two nominations for the SLECP program, he was finally on his way to become an officer. Josiah said the rest of the commander’s call was a blur and all he could think

Lead as you have been led The future second lieutenant said he could not quantify the support his leadership gave him as he worked toward his career goals. “They always looked at what I was capable of first and then let me prove myself in that position,” said Josiah. “As many risks as they took, I tried to make sure they were rewarded for that too.” He added that he never felt like rank defined what his capabilities were. “It just reinforces that leaders at all levels will invest in you, and it makes you want to be the leader that they were to you.”

AtHoc Emergency Mass Notification System receives upgrade by Air Force News Service AtHoc, an interactive warning system that allows senior leaders to inform base personnel of urgent information such as base closures or delayed openings, recently received updates to its system that requires the user to verify contact information. “This update is more reliable and we won’t have as many of the connectivity issues that we’ve had in the past. Prior to this update, AtHoc ran on a server and now it’s more cloud-based, providing better consistency,” said Master Sgt. Todd Wireman, Air Force Materiel Command command and control operations training and standardization manager. Users should look on the desktop of their unclassified government computer to find the white globe with purple ring icon in the sys-

tem tray – the old version of AtHoc is a purple globe which should not be used. Right-clicking on the white globe and selecting “Access Self-Service” will open a browser window where users can input work and personal email addresses and phone numbers, select if they’re members of groups such as the Emergency Operations Center or Crisis Action Team, and even add contact information for their family members, so they will receive notifications as well. After updating contact information using a government computer, users can download the Blackberry AtHoc app from either the Apple or Google app stores. After opening the app, users should enter the personal email address they provided into the app, then verify that email address by clicking on the link in an email that they

will receive. When prompted whether to open the link in the AtHoc app, users should agree. Users will then be asked to enter their organization’s code. Currently, the app serves as a way to receive messages through AtHoc, but an expanded feature set is planned for the future.

The system notifies users via phone call, text message or email. Messages are sent through the same mass alert system that provides popup notifications to personnel through desktop workstations. These individuals will normally be notified between 4 and 5 a.m. in the event of

extreme weather. If the white globe icon is missing from a user’s system tray, they should contact their Communications Focal Point or submit a trouble call ticket to have the new AtHoc installed through the VESD shortcut on their government computer’s desktop.

ment, focus, and service before self underscores his nomination as an 86th AW Airlifter of the Week. Senior Airman Ramiro Rios, 496th ABS Fuels Controller, is the second Airman from Morón to receive Airlifter of the Week. Despite arriving mid-December, 2018, Rios took the lead on coordinating recertification of fuel trucks for off-base transport of dangerous goods. Additionally, the certifications have saved the U.S. Air Force over 100,000 dollars in shipment costs to transport the trucks to Germany for

recertification. Additionally, Rios coordinated, dispatched, and controlled the delivery of 92,000 gallons of fuel within one week. He processed fuel transactions worth 273,000 dollars and he accounts for bulk fuel inventories of 2.7 million gallons every day. These accomplishments have made Rios a very obvious and deserving candidate as Airlifter of the Week. Inclement weather notifications keep community safe by Mary Davis U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz During the winter months, U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz prepares for the likelihood of inclement weather in the form of freezing rain, snow and ice, and stands ready to make difficult decisions when it comes to road conditions, duty reporting and school closings. “The safety, security and well-being of our Soldiers, civilian employees and family members are vital; therefore, we are dedicated to providing timely, accurate information to minimize risk and ensure safety within our military community,” said USAG RP Commander Col. Jason T. Edwards. Due to rapidly changing adverse weather, collecting information and making timely judgement calls can sometimes be challenging. That’s why it’s important for the commander to make prudent decisions, since they affect garrison safety. “Severe weather conditions can pose a significant hazard to public safety,” Edwards explained. “To combat that, we have inclement weather procedures in place to help us make the best decisions for the weather conditions occurring at the time. “Thursday morning, I carefully traveled to Baumholder at 3 a.m. to personally assess the conditions. I rode along with the Directorate of Public Works Army professional responsible for clearing the roads. We navigated through each of the locations and I was able to see the weather impacts up close and our capacity to keep up. Ultimately, this led to the closure of the post.” Military police provided assessments throughout the night making the same recommendations, but “being new to the region, it was great for me to get eyes on firsthand,” Edwards said. When adverse weather happens overnight, driving conditions can become hazardous. During these instances, military police units report worsening road conditions between 2 and 3 a.m. to the garrison’s Director of Emergency Services Lt. Col. Victor Baez-An. Afterwards, the DES director informs the garrison commander of the current inclement weather conditions, they review reports and also take into account the forecasted weather for affected installations. “After reviewing all the information, the commander decides the necessity of school closings and delayed duty reporting for Soldiers and civilian employees,” the DES director said. “If delays or closures are determined,

the information is distributed to the garrison community between 3 and 5 a.m. via the AtHoc mass warning notification system, USAG RP Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/army. rp/) and AFN Kaiserslautern radio on 105.1 FM.” School buses are a major factor in the decision process. School closure decisions impacting Kaiserslautern schools must be made jointly in a coordinated effort between the Army and Air Force commanders no later than 3:30 a.m. For Baumholder, the call must be made by the Army no later than 5 a.m. This remains the target window to ensure buses stay off the road, Edwards explained. If poor weather is inevitable, all measures will be made to make the decision the night before, he said. If weather conditions begin deteriorating in the morning once people are already at work and children are at school, the garrison commander will establish whether early release or school closures before noon is applicable, so children can be transported home safely. “I encourage parents to make a judgement call whether to send their children to school if weather situations become too hazardous at their location,” the commander said. “It’s always better to make prudent decisions when it comes to the safety of our children.” When early work release is initiated by the garrison commander due to bad weather, all garrison facilities will close as soon as they are able. Army Child Development Centers and School Age Centers will remain open to accommodate mission-essential personnel only. Non-mission essential personnel will be contacted for early pickup of their children.

Mission-essential personnel will be determined by mission and will vary. Garrison directors will notify their employees if they are considered mission-essential. In general, mission-essential garrison employees may include emergency services, emergency repair, snow removal and Emergency Operations Center personnel. Depending on mission needs, other agencies and personnel may be included as essential personnel. In any case, when inclement weather makes driving hazardous, everyone (to include mission-essential personnel) should refrain from driving until the roads are safe to do so. When adverse weather hits, staying informed is paramount. That’s why it’s important for people to sign up to receive AtHoc notifications via phone and email. To sign up, visit the USAG RP website at https:// home.army.mil/rheinland-pfalz/ and click on the “AtHoc Mass Warning Notification System” link under “Featured Resources.” People can access up-to-date road conditions for all garrison installations on the Installation Management Command-Europe Road Conditions page at: https://home.army.mil/ roads/. The page is updated by DES based upon military police patrols on each installation. Please note, however, the page only reflects driving conditions on post and not in local communities surrounding the installations. Road conditions outside the gates can vary widely from better to worse than what is indicated for government vehicle travel on post. Understanding post road condi-

tions is an important part of staying safe during inclement weather. The IMCOM-Europe page displays road conditions in designations of Green, Amber, Red or Black. • Green – Road conditions are normal. • Amber – Road conditions vary from normal to dangerous. Vehicle operators should exercise additional precautions. Most installations should be open, but stay tuned for possible late reporting or early release. • Red – Road conditions are hazardous. Exercise extreme caution. Individuals are discouraged from driving privately-owned vehicles unless absolutely necessary. Possible late reporting or early release of personnel and closure of services. • Black – Road conditions are extremely hazardous. Government -owned vehicles used off base or off post are at the discretion of the owning commander. POVs should not be on the road. Installations will likely be closed. Motorists should also drive cautiously off post, because roads may be more hazardous in the local communities surrounding installations, especially at higher elevations such as Baumholder and Sembach. “The key to keeping our military communities safe is conducting early weather assessments and ensuring notifications are sent in a timely manner,” the commander concluded. “When it comes to our Soldiers, civilian employees and families, I want to make sure everyone understands the inclement weather process to provide transparency of our practices.”

in Roman gods again. Then they would be friends. But the priest told him that he never would ask him to do so if he knew about the glory of God and his son Christ. During his visit with Claudius, a council member asked Valentine what he thought of the Roman gods. Valentine answered that they are demons. The council immediately requested the blasphemer’s death. During a

delay Valentine asked for, he impressed the emperor with the truth of Christian belief. Claudius was deeply touched, but when Rome’s governor said Valentine was a magician, Claudius feared a revolt by his people and passed the priest on to Asterius, a judge, to decide on his fate. While standing in front of the judge, Valentine performed a miracle. He made the judge’s blind daughter see again by pray-

ing and laying on of hands. Asterius and his family got baptized after that. But since their new Christian belief was counter to Roman religion, they were tortured and killed. Rome’s governor also decided to torture Valentine and behead him Feb. 14, 269. Before he was killed, many young people visited him in jail. Also, one jail guard’s daughter came to see him several times. She helped him to keep his spirits up and told him that he did the right thing by ignoring the emperor and going ahead with the secret messages. On the day he was to die, he left a note thanking the girl for her friendship and loyalty. He signed it with “Love from your Valentine.” That might have started the custom of exchanging love messages Feb. 14. Valentine cards have a long tradition. Legend says that the Duke of Orleans, while in prison in the tower of London in 1415, kept sending love letters to his spouse, and not only on Feb. 14. Ever since, he is looked at as the founder of Valentine’s. In the 17th century, author Samuel Pepys from London, revived this tradition of writing a love letter to his wife Feb. 14. She was so thrilled about it and in turn gave him flowers. The British noble society took over the tradition of giving flowers and sending love notes soon after, and it was spread through England and France. In the 18th century, people in love started to send romantic greeting cards. In Germany, recognition of Valentine’s Day started in the 1950’s when American Soldiers brought the British tradition to Germany. KAISERSLAUTERN

Ramstein boys, Kaiserslautern girls stay unbeaten in league by Robert Baldwin contributing writer Naser Eaves and Jason Jones Jr. combined for 39 points as Ramstein defeated crosstown rival Kaiserslautern 65-49 Tuesday to remain undefeated in boys basketball. On the other side of the autobahn, Kaiserslautern outlasted Ramstein 37-33 to stay unbeaten in girls league play. Kaiserslautern’s boys had the unenviable task of playing at Ramstein without their two top scorers, Tre Dotson (toe) and Ervin Johnson (shoulder). But with grit and a well-played game plan, the Raiders only trailed by three after three quarters. It was as though Ramstein had gone into hibernation as Brandon Morris had ten first half points and Eric Santiago seven and the Raiders battled for rebounds with the taller Royals. Trailing 42-39 and knowing that Ramstein senior Jake Fraley and junior point guard JJ Little had four fouls, the Raiders started the fourth quarter with a steal and momentum. But, someone poked the bear and the hibernation was over. As is their trademark, the Royals took it out of cruise mode and went on a wild run with Jones scoring on a coast-to-coast layup, freshman Elisha Williams nailing two jumpers and Eaves drilling a three from the corner. Kaiserslautern Coach Corey Sullivan called a time out and the game was locked up. The Raiders Kendryk Jenkins hit a three, but it was all Royals down the stretch with Jones putting the dot on the exclamation point with a twohanded slam dunk. Ramstein outscored Kaiserslautern 42-23 in the second half. In Kaiserslautern, the outcome of the back and forth girls game was a mystery until the last few minutes. Ramstein managed to hold high-scoring senior Le’Jhanique Brown to five points. But

two of them were clutch free throws in the hectic fourth quarter to pace the 37-33 Raiders win. Both teams had opportunities to win it at the free throw line, but both were just three of nine in the fourth. Kaiserslautern led it by two after three quarters. The Royals tied it at 26 with 6:45 remaining and went ahead on a free throw. After trading the lead, Ramstein went back up by a point with 3:22 remaining on two free throws by Adelina Bonilla. But the Raiders tied it on a made free throw and iced it on a layup by sophomore Aryana Johnson with less than two minutes remaining. Ramstein’s Shemilia Johnson led all scorers with ten points. The Royals defense held Kaiserslautern’s outstanding point guard Emanjae Hawkins to six points, but her defense and all around play helped set the tone. On Friday and Saturday, Ramstein’s boys continued their undefeated season with two home victories over scrappy Vilseck while the girls used their stifling defense to do the same. The Royals boys defeated Vilseck 75-50 and 68-63. The Royals girls defeated Vilseck 47-16 and 38-18. Ramstein’s boys got the usual leadership from Eaves, Fraley and Little. Eaves dominated Saturday’s game in the third quarter with a three pointer and three straight drives to the basket, one a thunderous slam. He finished with 19 points, 11 in the third period alone. Fraley canned a key three pointer to halt a Vilseck run. He ended up with 11 points. Little started with three 3 pointers and ran the offense efficiently, finishing the game with 14 and double digits in assists. But it was the contribution of freshman Williams and Jones Jr. that got the Royals over the hump in their close victory Saturday. Williams was in the ballgame to check Vilseck’s lightning

-quick point guard Xavier Bynes and snaked through the lane for a crucial lay up to stem Vilseck’s momentum. Jones Jr. grabbed a key rebound and basket late in the game to seal it. “Williams is a freshman and still learning,” Coach Andy O’Connor said about his young player. “He can shoot

really well, but it was nice to see him take it to the basket and make a shot in the paint and not settle for a three.” For Jones, the last quarter was a make up for what he considered a less than stellar performance the day before, when he missed all five free throws and only scored four points while battling to keep massive Vilseck center Jonas Matthews off the glass. “I went home after the game last (Friday) night and thought about it,” he said with a smile on his face after the Saturday contest. “But I realized you need a short memory in this game. I was glad I was able to help out today. I enjoyed playing against Matthews. He is such a big guy and works very hard.”

Jones Jr. ended Saturday with 14 points and several clutch rebounds. Coach O’Connor agreed that Friday was not Jones’ performance. But his faith in Jones never wavered. “Jones Jr. really struggled on Friday night, so to see him come back on Saturday with a big game and clinching basket was good to see. He is a high-character player and we can always count on him to give maximum effort,” he said. Eaves led the team with 19 points, 11 in the crucial third period. Little had 14 with several assists while Fraley added 11. Jones had 14, including five timely fourth quarter points. Bynes had 19 for Vilseck with three 3 pointers, frequent trips down the lane and numerous clutch passes for baskets. Matthews had 11 and dominated on the boards. Cameron Gaetos had 13 points and played well for Vilseck when Bynes took a breather on the bench. The Ramstein girls won both of their contests. On Friday, the Royals did anything they wanted and blew out Vilseck 47-16. On Saturday, Vilseck recouped from their lackluster performance of Friday night and gave the Royals a battle before falling 32-21. “The big difference was that they changed their defense and played manto-man, and did a good job of locking down Johnson which, honestly, we were not expecting. It was a good adjustment on their part,” Ramstein Coach Nathan Brewster said. “Offensively, they were still very similar, but they handled pressure in the front court better on Saturday. Coach Crawford is a good coach and did a good job preparing them.” The Royals started the game enthusiastically, but were ice cold and were down 5-2 at the end of the first quarter. But led by fiery guard Alexis Tri, the Royals defense forced Vilseck into several turnovers and lackluster shooting and got their running game into gear. Vilseck played much calmer and was more focused than on Friday, but Ramstein’s experience, determination and depth wore them down. “Adelina Bonilla, who didn’t do so well scoring on Friday, picked it up on Saturday, even though she only had eight points, she still had eleven rebounds. Very close to a double-double,” Brewster said. Both boys and girls will now have several games in a short time. They both want to continue to build momentum for the all important tournament time in a few weeks. SHAPE travels to Ramstein this weekend and Kaiserslautern is home with two very important league games with Stuttgart.

Stuttgart, Ramstein top two in Kaiserslautern Wrestle Off by Robert Baldwin contributing writer On the strength of superb team depth and seven first-place finishes, Stuttgart outlasted a field of seven in the Kaiserslautern Wrestle Off on Saturday, Feb. 2. Stuttgart accumulated 246 points to runner-up Ramstein’s 213. Once again, the featured performers came from the same household. Stuttgart brother and sisteract McKinley and Benjamin Fielding dominated the field at 106 and 138 pounds. Benjamin is the returning European champion as a senior. Sister McKinley is a sophomore and considered one of the favorites to win in that division in the upcoming Sectionals. McKinley defeated outstanding Ramstein junior John Odom for the title while Benjamin beat Logan Campbell of Ramstein for his title. Ramstein’s lone title came at 132 pounds where Christian Griffith defeated Josh Robles of Hohenfels while the Royals Brian McKinney placed third. Matthew Oroskovich was the run-

ner up at 113 pounds, falling to Carson Hicks of Spanghalem. Eli Rothas was second at 126, Marcus Bradley was third at 145, Oliver Seelig fourth at 152, Owen Peterson third at 170, while Caleb Hill and Gabe Davis were second and third at 182. Nick Scherzer placed third and

Carl Wilcox fourth at 285. Ramstein came in first in the two round robin weight classes. Nick Mooney defeated the field at 195 and Theodore Ward did the same at 220. Kaiserslautern’s points came at 138 where Napolean Cox placed fourth and at 160 where Christian

Forker was the runner up to Gregory Sanchez of Stuttgart. Kaiserslautern coach Brian Daly knew that Stuttgart was the team to beat. “Stuttgart really has a strong program,” Daly said. “They have the numbers and they start them wrestling when they are young.” Their dominance was evident by the number of wrestlers who scored Saturday. Daly said one of the frustrations overseas is the lack of mat time for the athletes. In the States, they get more dual meets. But because of the travel issues here, the wrestlers usually just grapple once a week. Now it is on to sectionals at three different locations. Ramstein will be competing in Brussels and Kaiserslautern in Stuttgart. The third venue is Vicenza. The top three performers in each weight class will advance to the championships in Wiesbaden. “That third place match is now very important,” Daly said, alluding to the fact that three get to go. There are also three wildcard spots for wrestlers who deserve to go but for some reason did not qualify.

You found the perfect house for retirement in Germany. Now what? By FindItGuide.com Excerpts courtesy of German-American Community Office You have been searching for the perfect house for your retirement and you finally found it! It is just the right size for your new life after work and you are ready to pull the trigger on it. Before that next great leap, there are some things you will need to do. If you wish to retire in Germany and are no longer associated with the U.S. military, you will lose your SOFA status and consequently will become a tourist. A regular U.S. citizen can stay in Germany for 90 days without requiring a residence permit. You will fall under this category as soon as you retire. What you have to do is apply for a residence permit (Aufenthaltsgenehmigung) at the Foreigners’ Registration Office (Ausländerbehörde). If you live in the City of Kaiserslautern (city includes: Dansenberg, Einsiedlerhof, Erfenbach with Lampertsmühle and Stockborn, Erlenbach, Hohenecken with Espensteig, Mölschbach, Morlautern with Waldhof, and Siegelbach) then the office in Rathaus-Nord, Benzinoring 1, is the appropriate office for you. If you live in Kaiserslautern County (county includes: Bann, Bruchmühlbach-Miesau, Enkenbach-Alsenborn, Erzenhausen, Eulenbis, Fischbach, Frankelbach, Frankenstein, Gerhardsbrunn, Hauptstuhl, Heiligenmoschel, Hirschhorn/Pfalz, Hochspeyer, Hütschenhausen, Katzweiler, Kindsbach, Kollweiler, KottweilerSchwanden, Krickenbach, Lambsborn, Landstuhl, Langwieden, Linden, Mackenbach, Martinshöhe,

You will have to provide the following: • Proof of income (Einkommensnachweis). Submitting copies of your retirement pay is usually sufficient.

• Proof of health insurance (Krankenversicherung). If you remain covered through the U.S. system, then submit proof of this. Otherwise, you will have to acquire health insurance on the German economy. • Passports and photos of you and each family member. If you are married and your spouse is not German, the above items are also required of your spouse. You will also need to submit a marriage certificate, regardless of your spouse’s nationality. It is advisable to start early on these things, however, Read more on last page of Property Section

Continued from front page of Properties section as long as you have SOFA status, you cannot start this process. When you lose your status, you will be considered a U.S. tourist who just entered the country. After this, you can stay in Germany for 90 days without needing a status. As soon as you lose the SOFA status, you should begin the process of applying for a residence permit. Make an appointment at the Foreigners’

Registration Office (Ausländerbehörde). Call 0631-365-2245/2584 for the Kaiserslautern City Administration or 0631-7105-201/401 for the County Administration. Take the above items to the appropriate office. Your documents will be reviewed. There is no fixed time for the process. It can be a matter of two weeks or longer. Therefore, it is highly recommended you begin the process as soon as you lose your SOFA status. Usually, a residence permit must be renewed

annually. Also, you will not receive German health benefits if you do not pay into the German health care system through employment. Therefore, you will only receive a residence permit if you already have your own health care. If you do end up working on the economy, you will then pay for German health insurance, which entitles you to receive German health benefits.
